Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Regan Spinner 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Depending on who you ask, water either has flavor or tastes like nothing at all. Regardless of which team you’re on, the 786th Civil Engineer Squadron is responsible for the clean water that supplies Ramstein Air Base and the surrounding geographically separated units in the Kaiserslautern Military Community area. The 786th CES produces approximately one million gallons of water daily, pulling from multiple wells around RAB, that goes through three different stages of treatment. “To process the water we have two stages of filtration and a stage of disinfection of chemicals,” said Airman 1st Class Patrick Aizpurua, 786th CES water systems maintenance apprentice. “The first stage of filtration would be the hardening filters.” The hardness of water is determined by the measurement of how many minerals are in the water. When the water is brought to the facility, the water is first hard-
ened and then filtered to remove all of the debris that comes out of the ground with it. Filtration is a 20-minute process, with water being pushed through three separate activated carbon filters, which act as a microscopic strain, removing all the chemicals and particles within the water. Even with all the filtering however, the job is not yet over. According to Aizpurua, fluoride is added to the water, a routine that America began in the 1940s, to help lower the rate of cavities in the people drinking the water. These levels are tested on a daily basis along with the PH balance to make sure the water isn’t too acidic or basic. After the water has been put through filtration and testing, it is deemed safe for consumption and is stored in a secured location under lock and key. If a foreign object enters the holding center in the storage unit, the water would be determined as contaminated and every single gallon would need to be disposed of. Airmen at the 786th CES have several responsibilities when it comes to testing the water, to include testing the water in the pool at the
Aquatic Center, maintenance and repair of all the potable water lines on base, fire hydrant flow testing and the transportation of wastewater off base daily for treatment. “The safe drinking water we provide directly affects the quality of life for everyone on Ramstein as well as several GSUs around the KMC area,” said Tech. Sgt. Alexander Kendrick, 786th CES water plant operations noncommissioned officer in charge. “Thousands of people depend on the water provided by the water treatment facility every day, so we take our job very seriously to ensure our product adheres to standards.” The mission of the water treatment plant is to provide pure, safe, and reliable drinking water for the base populace while also being good stewards of our natural resources and the environment “Most people don’t think twice about the importance of water when considering the overall mission at Ramstein," said Kendrick. “Hydration, food preparation, firefighting capabilities and sanitation, are all important to the mission, and all rely on the availability of potable water.”

RAMSTEIN MVP from Page 1 structure on Ramstein proper and our geographically separated installations.” In order to advance the wing’s ability to perform its mission, Jones said Airmen must always be postured to project power in all domains, including air, land, space and cyberspace. “It’s not just about the 86th Airlift Wing’s mission,” Jones said. “It’s the mission of our more than 120 mission partners, so ensuring the Global Gateway is ready is imperative. If one fails, we all fail.” 86th AW Vision: Adaptive Airmen, Agile Team…Ready to Execute An agile team of adaptive Airmen is required to ensure the no-fail mission succeeds. We must be ready to execute when called upon by our Nation. “The 86th AW vision recognizes that this is a team effort,” Jones said. “We need an agile team of adaptive Airmen who are creative, innovative and flexible, and truly own their commitment to be ready to execute when called.” 86th AW Priorities and Focus Areas: Mission, People, Partners, Culture To ensure Team Ramstein accomplishes the mission and vision, Jones said there are four priorities — mission, people, partners, and culture — that he wants members across the base to focus their efforts on. Mission: “This is why we’re here.” “Our first priority is the mission because that is why we are here,” Jones said. “We must execute what we are tasked with today and be prepared to operate in an ever-changing complex and dynamic threat environment. The team must advance our piece of the Air Force Generation (AFFORGEN) model to ensure we are postured to offer a sustainable force
of Airmen and airpower to the joint force.” The wing will also advance our progress with Agile Combat Employment and multi-capable Airmen concepts. We must continue to train our Airmen to do basic tasks outside their usual specialty and operationalize our scheme of maneuver to increase survivability while generating and projecting combat power across the theater. Additionally, the 86th AW will prioritize infrastructure resilience and installation excellence to ensure our resources are able withstand dynamic environments and operations. People: “The mission doesn’t happen without the people.” “One of the driving priorities of the 86th AW is the people,” Jones said. “It is incumbent for our leaders to inspire Airmen by demonstrating excellence in how we conduct ourselves each and every day.” For many service members, there is some version of a family behind them for support, which served as inspiration to invest in Airmen and families.
Particularly at overseas locations, quality of life and how Airmen live is important to the command team, Jones said, because the resources available in Germany are not the same as those stateside. Additionally, Jones named the priorities of developing Airmen and families, who strive for excellence in all that they do. “Every Airman should strive to leave Ramstein better than when they arrived,” Jones said. “Developing our Airmen and their families starts with enhancing their quality of life and improving the organizations that provide the resources they need. It also involves providing deliberate programs and opportunities to personally and professionally develop skillsets that will be needed for in and out of uniform.” Partners: “Our German partners are gracious hosts, so we need to be good neighbors.” Jones also aims to deepen relationships with allies, partners, and surrounding communities, which will allow the wing to come together
with the community as one team in times of need. While Jones believes it is important to build connections and partnerships with community surrounding the base, it is also important to strengthen interoperability with allies and partners, and advance joint integration with our sister services. “It is critical to exercise, train and integrate with our allies to understand different capabilities, and capacities each entity brings to the fight,” Jones said. “However, our partnerships extend beyond other Nations, but also units at surrounding bases within the Kaiserslautern Military Community.” Culture: “The undertone and foundation of any great organization.” An essential aspect of culture is to embrace the Air Force core values by living them every day. “The core values are foundational for success as an Airman, and as a human being,” Jones said. “We must treat each other with dignity and respect and allow Airmen and families to thrive and be the
best version of themselves.” Within this concept, Jones aims to further develop Airmen of character who will not only elevate their own performance but will look to lift others while executing our mission and living in our communities. The Air Force has a dynamic mission and diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion ensure that all Airmen not only have a seat at the table, but that their voices are heard as well. “You need to understand the value of your voice and your ideas,” Jones said. “As we go forward, we want to hear your ideas, and we need to hear your voice.” Finally, Jones said the last two focus areas of the 86th AW culture are standards and discipline, and customs and courtesies. “The sacred cloth Airmen and service members wear makes them different than the Nation they serve, which comes with the necessity to establish and enforce standards and discipline every day. We must also understand that proper customs and courtesies are important. They engender good order and discipline in our units and build the foundation for self-discipline,” said Jones. “Practicing and enforcing these standards in peacetime builds trust and confidence that if and when conflict arises, we have the discipline to execute our mission.” Ultimately, Jones believes that with the new mission, vision and priorities, Team Ramstein will continue to succeed at every challenge they may face. “I see some awesome things happening in 2023 and the team will continue to crush every piece of that mission set that we’re asked to execute,” Jones said. “Anytime, anywhere.” The 86th AW, and the Airmen who execute the Global Gateway mission every single day, are essential to combat readiness and airlift operations throughout Europe and beyond.

Andrew Jo 21st Theater Sustainment Command The 21st Theater Sustainment Command held their inaugural maintenance symposium on Vogelweh Military Complex, Feb. 15 and 16. The symposium gathered members from United States Army Europe and Africa, 21st TSC and its subordinate units to an open forum to discuss maintenance and allow members the opportunity to network. The event began with opening remarks from Lt. Col. Nathaniel Cincala, chief of staff of logistics, 21st TSC, and Maj. Gen. James Smith, commanding general, 21st TSC, about the importance of maintenance. This is the first maintenance symposium of its kind according to Dana Dillon, logistics management specialist, 21st TSC. “From my understanding, I haven’t seen any archive files that show any type of maintenance symposium happening in the past,” said Dillon. “So [we] felt that it was overdue and would be a good forum to get logisticians and maintainers talking to each other to do crosstalk.” The theme of the forum was “Back to the Basics.” Dillon says this was driven by the need to return to the cornerstone of maintenance. “If you catch problems early, they don’t turn into bigger prob-

lems,” said Dillon. “So that, being back to the basics, really was trying to reinforce catching stuff at the lower level.” The symposium covered a variety of topics including Global Combat Support System — Army, the Army Award for Maintenance Excellence, the agreement concerning the international carriage of dangerous goods by road [ADR] and policies. GCSS-A is a webbased automated logistics system and the AAME recognizes units for maintenance excellence. The forum also provided the oppor-
tunity for units such as 16th Sustainment Brigade to showcase and discuss their capabilities. “So, I thought this symposium got off to a great start,” said Maj. Michael Maternick, logistics support branch, 21st TSC. “We had our commanding general here at the beginning of the day and we had the [16th] brigade commander here and it showed that command emphasis and why maintenance is so important. That two commanders took time to come in and talk to the troops about it.” Another key aspect of the symposium was the opportunity for maintainers across different fields and units to discuss best practices and exchange ideas with one another. It allowed members to put faces to names and build
rapport within the maintenance community. “What we’re really looking at, is trying to develop it into a combined logistics forum, where we have supply and maintenance personnel,” said Dillon. He goes on to say while the initial symposium will cover general information and topics, the expectation is for the forum to evolve. Eventually, the intent is to allow the discussions to transition from general knowledge to specialties within maintenance or supply. The 21st TSC is USAREUR-AF’s lead organization for all sustainment activities including logistics support, transportation, and all other areas in the field of sustainment. The TSC executes sustainment across the entire European Theater in support of U.S. European Command and NATO operations.

KMC leaders join Leadership Connect by Senior Airman Isaac Olivera 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs U.S. Air Force officer, enlisted and senior civilian leaders gathered with local community leaders to take part in Leadership Connect, Feb. 10. This program aims to connect experienced Air Force leaders from U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa, and the Third Air Force wings at Ramstein and Spangdahlem with local German leaders in the areas of business, academia, industry, culture, and others. “Through monthly ‘Connect Days,’ members will gain a deeper understanding of the community around them and new insights on leadership challenges that they can apply in their role as USAF leaders,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. Derek France, Third Air Force and Kaiserslautern Military Community commander. “After completion of the program, graduates will have a broader toolkit for leadership from a variety of perspectives and great connections with each other as well as our host nation partners.” Leadership Connect was first introduced by the major command in 2021 at Royal Air Force Stations Lakenheath and Mildenhall in the United Kingdom; but USAFEAFAFRICA just started the program in Germany this year. The program will focus on several leadership topics such as adaptation, perceptive thinking, and making critical decisions. The KMC group’s first meeting featured a tour of the BorgWarner facilities in Mannheim, and a presentation by Dr. Juergen Adam, vice-president and general manager Europe and South America at BorgWarner Inc. Adam led the group in a disucssion on leading in a fast-changing world with a lot of uncertainty and propelling an organization for change. However, his message was simple.

“Leadership is all about people, and culture is very important in any organization,” Adam said. Participants will meet up to two times a month, and the next meeting is scheduled for March 10. “Attendees will have the chance to expand their abilities by exchanging ideas and strategies,” explained Lt. Col. Ryan Ferdinandsen, Leadership Connect program lead and 3rd AF Commander’s Action Group chief. “The overall intent is to expand their knowledge and hone their leadership skills with their current, and future organizations.”

by Air Force Global Strike Command Public Affairs BARKSDALE AIR FORCE BASE, LA — A team of Air Force Global Strike Command Airmen launched an unarmed Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile equipped with a test reentry vehicle on Feb. 9 from Vandenberg Space Force Base, California. This test launch is part of routine and periodic activities intended to demonstrate that this U.S. nuclear deterrent is safe, secure, reliable, and effective to deter twenty-first century threats and reassure our allies. Such tests have occurred over 300 times before, and this test is not the result of current world events. “A test launch displays the heart of our deterrence mission on the world’s stage, assuring our nation and its allies that our weapons are capable and our Airmen are ready and willing to defend peace across the globe at a moment's notice,” said Gen. Thomas A. Bussiere, commander of Air Force Global Strike Command. The ICBM's reentry vehicle traveled approximately 4,200 miles to the Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands. These test launches verify the accuracy and

reliability of the ICBM weapon system and provides valuable data to ensure a continued safe, secure and effective nuclear deterrent. “This launch showcases the redundancy and reliability of our strategic deterrence systems while sending a visible message of assurance to allies,” said Col. Christopher Cruise, 377th Test and Evaluation Group commander. “This multilateral team reflects the precision and professionalism of our command, and our joint partners.” Airmen from the 91st Missile Wing at Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota, were selected for the task force to support the test launch. The missile bases within Air Fore Global Strike Command have crew members standing alert 24 hours a day, year-round, overseeing the nation’s ICBM alert forces. “This test launch is a culmination of months of preparation and collaboration across multiple Air Forces agencies,” said Maj. Martin Escarzaga, task force commander. “The Airmen who perform this mission of strategic deterrence are the best our nation has to offer. They work 365 days a year to maintain, support, operate, and secure this vital component of our nuclear triad.” The ICBM community, including the Department of Defense, the
Department of Energy, and U.S. Strategic Command, uses data collected from test launches for continuing force development evaluation. The ICBM test launch program demonstrates the operational capability of the Minuteman III and ensures the U.S.’s ability to maintain a strong, credible nuclear deterrent as a key element of U.S. national security and the security of U.S. allies and partners. Air Force Global Strike Command is a major command with headquarters at Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana, in the Shreveport-Bossier City community. The command overseas the nation's three intercontinental ballistic missile wings, the Air Force’s entire bomber force, to include B-52 Stratofortress, B-1B Lancer and B-2 Spirit wings, the Long Range Strike Bomber program, Air Force Nuclear Command, Control and Communications systems, and operational and maintenance support to organizations within the nuclear enterprise. The LG-35A Sentinel will replace the Minuteman III ICBM with an initial capability of 2029. Until full capability is achieved in the mid-2030s, the Air Force is committed to ensuring Minuteman III remains a viable deterrent.
Story and photo by Karl Weisel U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Family and MWR Muhammad Suleman has served Soldiers and their families for more than four decades – half of that time at the Wiesbaden Library. “I started in Mainz in 1981 as a reproduction/mail clerk with the 232nd Signal Company,” said Suleman, who moved from his home in Pakistan to Germany as a young adult. “I was lucky to get the job.” After transferring to a job with the 102nd Signal Battalion in Bad Kreuznach and eventually helping close the community as a member of the closure team when 1st Armored Division relocated to Wiesbaden, Suleman transitioned to Wiesbaden with the 102nd. In Wiesbaden he worked as a forms and publications clerk — before finding a job with DFMWR at the Wiesbaden Library in 2003. “I’ve learned a lot of things in my life — starting with working with manual typewriters,” he said, adding, “Things changed so fast over the years.” While learning new skills and working with evolving technology has been challenging at times, the local national employee said he has always welcomed getting the chance to learn,

meet new people and embrace new ideas. “Every day you see new faces and discover new things,” Suleman said, adding that he likes working at the library “with a good team. It’s a good atmosphere. “MWR is the best team in the Army — they provide a lot of facilities to take care of Soldiers and their families,” he said. “The great thing about Mr. Suleman is that he sees what needs to be done and he just does it,” said Wiesbaden Library Director Lane DeLaPena. “He doesn’t complain or make a big deal about it. … He’s the kind of guy who shows up and gets the job done no matter what. “He’s also fantastic with patrons. … His demeanor is very calm and kind, and people seem to really respond to it. He’s a real treasure to the community,” she said. “He’s a valued MWR employee, of course, but he’s also much more than that,” said DeLaPena. “In the military there’s constant change. Mr. Suleman is part of the community who has been present for decades, providing the same expertise, service and friendliness day in and out. “It’s not just that he’s a great employee, it’s that he’s a great person as well,” she concluded.

Pfaelzer Waldpfad hiking trail — time to get out and about Now that spring is peeking around the corner, it’s time to get out to exercise, don your hiking gear and experience nature at its best. Germany has spectacular rock formations, deeply incised valleys and pristine forest as far as the eye can see. The 143 kilometer-long Pfaelzer Waldpfad is the German Trekking Award Winner 2023 and to top it off, it starts near Kaiserslautern. Kaiserslautern to Schweigen-Rechtenbach along the Deutsche Weinstrasse (German Wine Road). Full of untouched nature, impressing calmness and breathtaking sandstone rock formations, the Pfaelzer Waldpfad is a hiking trail to soak in energy. The 143 kilometer-long route inspires you to hike the trail with natural valleys and a unique forest nirvana. At Johanniskreuz you can visit the Haus der Nachhaltigkeit (House of Sustainability), which holds exciting information regarding the forest, its inhabitants and all that it offers to people. The route
leads further toward Rodalben, and with each new section there are remarkable new views of the forest. Once at Dahner Felsenland the trail leads along bizarre sandstone rocks through a wildly romantic landscape and even a stretch through France. The trail ends at Schweigen-Reichenbach at the Deutsches Weintor (German wine gate) where it meets the Pfaelzer Weinsteig, another exciting hiking trail through vineyards. Considerations on orthodontic treatment for military families February is Children’s Dental Health Month, and one important topic to discuss when highlighting children’s oral health is the topic of orthodontic treatment, or braces. Orthodontic treatment can significantly improve the alignment and function of the bite as well as the esthetics of a person’s smile. It can also improve self-confidence and quality of life. There is no doubt that orthodontic treatment is beneficial, but when is the right time to start orthodontic treatment in children? This article discusses the factors to consider when deciding to seek orthodontic treatment for your child as well as your orthodontic benefits under the Tricare Dental Plan. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children get their first orthodontic check-up by the age of 7 or upon recognition of orthodontic problems. At this age, children will have a mixture of primary (or baby) teeth with some permanent teeth, and potential signs of skeletal and dental discrepancies may be recognizable. Your dental professional should advise you on treatment options and recommendations. Frequently, many families are eager to correct early childhood crowding or alignment, however; it should be noted that most orthodontic treatment should wait until adolescence or when the patient’s
adult dentition is present. Except for limited scenarios that require early intervention such as: traumatic bites, psychosocial concerns, or growth disharmonies; there is sound research and several reasons why you should delay orthodontic treatment until all the primary teeth are gone. The first is that you can’t align the adult teeth until they are in the mouth. Starting too early will result in extensive time spent in orthodontic appliances waiting for the eruption of permanent teeth. Often, this extended treatment time results in increased risk for cavities, demineralization (white spots), gingivitis (gum disease), and orthodontic fatigue. Waiting for the patient to mature and become more proficient at taking care of their own dentition will greatly improve their oral hygiene during treatment and overall orthodontic experience. Military families, especially those stationed OCONUS (outside the contiguous United States) should also consider their DEROS (date of estimated return from overseas) in the timing of treatment. Apart from patients who experience skeletal discrepancies that require growth modification (or treatment that needs to take place during peak adolescent growth), you must consider if the treatment can be completed prior to your PCS date. If treatment is not completed, you will need to transfer and continue care with another orthodontist. While this is not ideal, it can be

done. However, it’s best to begin and end treatment with the same provider for several reasons including communication issues, differences in treatment philosophies or the use of difference appliance systems. This can lead to increased treatment time and increased cost. Families need to be aware that under the TRICARE Dental Program administered by United Concordia, there is a lifetime maximum benefit of $1,750 per enrollee for orthodontic treatment that is at play. So, if you utilize your benefit with one doctor and don’t finish treatment prior to your PCS, your paid benefit does not transfer to the gaining provider. For OCONUS situations, the base orthodontic department must sign the OCONUS Non-availability and Referral Form (or NARF) for you to utilize your TRICARE benefit via civilian providers. The process of attaining this form can vary by clinic, so please contact your base dental clinic for inquiries. For more information regarding your TRICARE dental benefits, please visit www.tricare.mil/TDP. In conclusion, the decision to initiate orthodontic treatment for your child is an important one that can be profoundly beneficial. You, your child, and the orthodontic team should carefully evaluate the treatment options, and consider your child’s age, growth, and remaining time on station to determine the plan that works best for your child. Samuel Chelanga crossed the finish line of the Mesa Half Marathon in first place, he stopped, looked around and took the sight in. At 37 years of age Chelanga added another accomplishment to his already storied career as a longdistance athlete, one that saw him win multiple National Collegiate Athletic Association titles and set numerous records along the way. Chelanga joined the U.S. Army in 2018 and commissioned as a logistics officer, before becoming part of the Army’s World Class Athlete Program in a bid to make the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. In preparation for this, Chelanga ran the Mesa Half Marathon, Feb. 4, winning in a time of 1:03.32, while also assisting the Phoenix Recruiting Battalion in their efforts to support the Army's recruiting goals. Chelanga’s journey began in his native Baringo County, Kenya, a country renowned for its long history of champion marathon runners. “My family was very poor, but my life was good. My parents were good people and they taught me hard work and being loyal to your family,” Chelanga said. “They were very supportive when I decided to move to America.” Chelanga grew up an avid runner and was constantly looking for ways to expand his burgeoning career. He soon received some advice from a Kenyan running legend. “One of my friends Paul Tergat was an Olympic medalist and I asked him for help to attend a college,” Chelanga explained. “Paul said I should try and get a scholarship with the NCAA. He connected me with a coach in America and that’s how I got here.” It was a massive decision for Chelanga, but one he accepted eagerly. He would accept a scholarship in 2006 with Liberty University, located in Virginia. “I didn’t know what to expect when I landed here, but I knew wanted to stay. I talked to my father and he said there’s nothing for me back home in the village. He told me to go for it,” Chelanga explained. “When I got my contract with Nike (in 2011), I was able to buy him a car. He said never in his life would he think his son would be able to do that for him. We always

walked everywhere. I was able to send him money for food and he could eat whatever he wanted. This is a blessing from being here in the United States,” Chelanga continued. During his time at Liberty University, Chelanga excelled, becoming an NCAA champion and record holder, establishing himself as one of the top endurance runners in the nation. After becoming a professional runner in 2011 he was on the brink of qualifying for the Olympics. “I became a four-time NCAA champion. I was champion in the cross country twice, 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters. I still have the NCAA record for the 10k set back in 2010,” he said. “I was an alternate for the 10k at the 2016 Olympics. I retired from running after that, but I’ve decided to come back and try one more time to qualify for 2024.” Chelanga said he felt he had done what he set out to achieve as a professional athlete when he made the choice to join the Army. “I felt like I’d done everything I could … there were other things I still wanted to do so I decided to serve,” Chelanga added. “I looked back at where I came from and what I’d accomplished, and it was unbelievable to me. I talked to my wife and told her I wanted to join the military.” Chelanga did just that and signed up to attend Officer Candidate School after being made aware of the opportunity by his recruiter.
“There were so many options when I decided to join the Army … I don’t think people realize how many opportunities there are,” he said. “My recruiter suggested OCS to me. I didn’t know what it was, but after he told me about it, I went for it. I went to Basic Training and OCS, graduated and became a logistics officer.” The Olympics still loomed heavily for Chelanga, and eventually he decided to become a part of the WCAP located at Fort Carson, Colo., a program designed to allow elite Soldier athletes the chance to compete and train for the Olympics, while still maintaining regular Soldier duties. “I’ve been in the program for a year and so far, it’s been great for me. It’s one of the best programs the Army has and I wish more people knew about it … the athletes there are great Soldiers,” Chelanga stated. Working alongside Chelanga in the WACAP is Maj. Kelly Kaim, dietician, WCAP, who said Chelanga has adapted well to the program and is a natural fit. “He’s a great leader in the program with all his experience, he’s committed to the Army and making a career of it,” Kaim said. “That’s a major decision on his part, as he’s chosen a military career over being a professional athlete and all the sponsorships that go with it.” Chelanga’s necessary mindset is a key part of being in the program, Kaim said, with the sheer volume of training necessary to succeed.
“It’s similar to what a Soldier might experience but at a higher level. In the program you must be at the top of your sport, something Sam definitely is,” she said. “Being a marathon runner is a lot of training and Sam’s meeting the challenge.” This challenge in Chelanga’s quest for the Olympics means a rigorous training regiment, some-
thing that would seem unrealistic to the average person, but almost routine for Chelanga. “I’m a marathon runner so I’ll do two hard sessions during the week, and a long, long session on Sunday. This is alongside my regular Army duties,” Chelanga explained. “I average about 110120 miles of running a week ... I don’t feel my age, it’s just a mental state of mind.” Chelanga now sees the Army as his long-term future and looks forward to this next chapter of his life. “I had a great life as a professional athlete, but now I’m preparing to stay in the Army and mentor the future leaders behind me. That’s my main goal, however long it takes I don’t mind,” Chelanga said. Chelanga is determined to assist Army recruiting in their efforts to attract Future Soldiers, something he deems an essential role of being in the WCAP. “I would say as a multi-time NCAA champion and former professional athlete — there’s no other place that gives you as many opportunities as the U.S. Army,” Chelanga said. “Go for it. It’s the best decision you can make for yourself and your family. Every day you wake up you have a purpose — you’re serving the American people.”

BIKE TRAILS from Page 1 where you can go from your house. The trails are well signposted with mileage to nearby sights or towns. “It’s freezing!” my son yelled as he dipped a toe in the wassertretbecken (water treading pool). Soon he was knee-deep in the cold clear water of the small pool beside a bike trail in Katzweiler. It was one of many stops we made along the 41km/25.5mile bike loop we pedaled one sunny weekend. Lots of scenery and plenty of breaks Our route began out of my front door in Kaiserslautern. We followed local bike lanes through town, and stopped to learn about the city’s synagogue memorial. North of town, we hopped on the Lauter Radweg (radweg means bike path in German) — a 40km/25mile bike trail along the valley between here and the town of Lauterecken. We stopped to splash in the river, play at playgrounds, pet horses, and take that cold foot plunge. In Hirschorn village, we looped westward along the Pfalzerland Radweg, which follows another quiet green valley. We kept to the trees, stopped for snacks and visited the Celtic burial in Rodenbach village. Here we joined a third trail – the Barabarossa Radweg – which led us back toward Kaiserslautern. The final leg was mostly forested. We rode past the animals in the zoo, and we stopped for some ice cream and pommes (french fries) at the imbiss (snack bar) near a small series of lakes called Hammerwoog. It took us all day, but the many stops and snacks and “look more cows!” kept my kids motivated and happy to be out. Also, ice cream near the end is a huge motivator. Here are a few tips to help you enjoy the trails Bike touring trails can be paved, hardpacked dirt, or stone. Most named trails include some of each. Trails are intended for a touring or hybrid bike; mountain bikes will also be fine. Gears are highly recommended. If
you’ve got a child on a single-speed, it’s ok to let them walk up hills. You will be biking on roads while in a town. The trails seem to dump into the villages and pick up again on the other side. There are usually designated biking streets. Follow the bike signs. These routes tend to have very little traffic, but it is still important that everyone knows to stay single file and follow the rules of the road. Pack food and water, but now that coronavirus numbers are down you don’t need to overdo it. There are springs to refill water bottles and small imbisses along the routes for your snack cravings. It is helpful to have a bike with some kind of storage — whether a basket, panniers, or — my favorite — a milk crate bolted to a rear rack. A backpack will always work, too, but you may find it cumbersome and hot on longer rides. Workout clothes are the most comfortable. The kids and I wear padded bike shorts, which make the distance less noticeable. A small packable rain jacket is also
a good idea to bring along. Don’t forget helmets. Using apps can help There are so many bike trails around Germany, it can be a bit overwhelming if you want to plan a long route ahead of time. I have used many outdoor apps, but I consistently find the free RLP tourism app (also called the Rheinland-Pfalz Gold app) the most accurate for planning bike trips in the Kaiserslautern area. Being a tourist app, it has sightseeing spots and points of interest accurately labeled and updated by the organization. I have also used the well-loved Komoot to compare its routing suggestions; Komoot is updated by users. Detours happen; roll with it With any route planning, however, be prepared to make different choices along the way. When in doubt, follow the bike signage instead of any app. During our big day out there was a detour at the beginning of the Lauter Trail.
It is being upgraded between Kaiserslautern and Otterbach. It was well-signed with “Radweg Umleitung” (bike path detour) signs, and quite a pleasant trail away from the busy road. Later in the day, we passed a second wessertretbrecken between Weilerbach and Rodenbach, and our hot feet didn’t balk at the temperature. We all dipped our legs to cool off. “Mom,” my daughter said, “maybe next weekend we can bike to the pool.” What a great idea.
