Maybe you promised o rse th t o o d ose eight fit into those old favorite j eans, or even improve o r h si fitness test s ore o ong with many others, have done this, so how do you stick to it? Spanish, American and Slovenian CBRN responders train together Story and photos by Lt. Col. Jefferson Wolfe 7th Mission Support Command Public Affairs Despite cold and rainy conditions, Soldiers from three countries recently trained together to improve their ability to respond to chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threats. A team from Spain’s “U nidad Militar de Emergencias,” which translates to “Military Emergencies U nit,” j oined the Army Reserve’s 773rd Civil Support Team and members of the Slovenian army for the weeklong CBRN exercise Ocean Response. “For us, it’s a real opportunity to work together to improve,” said Lt. Col. Carlos Armada, Spanish U ME chief. “We’re really happy to be here.” Both the 773rd CST and the U ME use N ATO protocols and procedures, Armada said. Collaborating in a

focused exercise leaves both teams ready to face a CBRN incident, Armada added. “I am very happy to be here, and I am open to collaborating again, anytime, anywhere,” Armada said. The exercise continued the re tionshi ﬁrst i t d ring exercise Daimel 2015 in Spain last year. Both units conduct similar CBRN response missions. “They are a capable partner, and we both learn from each other,” said Lt. Col. U .L. Armstrong Jr., 773rd CST commander. Although there are some differences between the units, there are many similar capabilities as well, Armstrong said. “The way they proceed through a problem might be a little differently than the U nited States would proceed through the problem,” said Lt. Col. Michael Ballerstein, 773rd CST deputy commander. During Ocean Response,

Ramstein is host to the largest cyber network in U .S. Air Forces in Europew req uiring constant infrastructure care. The 86th Communications Sq uadron has dedicated technicians, but a helping hand and teamwork can go further. “The 86th CS manages their networks well,” said Tech. Sgt. Randal Collmer, 1st CMX S infrastructure theater maintenance section chief. “We are providing an outside look and making suggestions to help improve the security and ensure they are in compliance with Air Force standards, bringing suggestions from our other sites we have helped. The added manpower and knowledge we provide has helped push others into compliance and high grades in their inspections. We hope we can help here as well.” The network optimization teams started work at the beginning of the year and are slated to run for several

Ameer Assad, 86th Communications Sq uadron network infrastructure section chief. “With a leaner, smaller Air Force and the increasingly complex environment we are operating in now, it has never been more important to have a j oint effort,” Assad said. The 86th CS provides network services not only for Ramstein but also 29 other geographically separated units, and the 1st CMX S provides specialized communication support. “When people lose network access, they call us,” Assad said. “When we run into problems we can’t solve alone due to location or manning, we call 1st CMX S. With their support, they have enabled us to improve our network infrastructure while taking care of our customers in a timely manner.” To support the Airmen around Ramstein, the 1st CMX S brings their knowledge from more than 100 days on the road providing theater commanders with emergency restorations, preventative maintenance and training to assist communications sq uadrons at home or other areas they cannot reach. For Airmen of the 1st CMX S, working together with other sq uadrons and keeping Airmen safe and secure is j ust one of the many j oys of their work, Collmer said.

outdoor part of the exercise. I t was much colder than the soldiers from Spain were used to. “We normally don’t work in these kinds of weather conditions,” said Cpl. Adrian Leadbeater, U ME member. I n Spain they usually see temperatures around 20 degrees Celsius, which is about 68 degrees Fahrenheit, Leadbeater added. “The Spanish Army can work through it,” Leadbeater said. “I t’s not an obstacle.” The scenario requi red the CBRN responders to conduct a CBRN rescue and decontamination outside. Then they entered a nearby warehouse for training on detection, saming nd identiﬁ tion issions. The Spanish and American teams suited up and worked side by side, conducting all the tasks together. “We like working with

the U nited States Army,” Leadbeater said. “We have the same principles.” The whole week of interoperability training was valuable, Armada said. At Baumholder, the Spanish U ME staged their mobile laboratory. There are no others in Europe qui te like it, offering oth d n ed ﬁe d-testing capabilities and communication technology to increase interoperability, Armada said. The mobile laboratory was not involved in the training at ROB, but the teams did get a chance to learn about it during the rest of the week. “One of the many obj ectives in this kind of training is working together for the future,” Armada said. “We are ready to work together in the future.” The 773rd CST and the U ME will be working together again in April in Spain during the conseque nce management exercise Gamma 16.

BONELESS MUSTARD PORK CHOPS Ingredients (for 4 people) • 2-4 tablespoons all purpose flour • ½ teaspoon salt • Dash of white pepper • 2 ounces of ham, minced • ½ onion, chopped • 4 large, boneless pork chops • ½ cup dry white wine • 2 cups of cream • 2 tablespoons spicy German mustard • 1-2 teaspoons Hungarian paprika Mix flour salt and pepper. Dredge 4 pork chops in seasoned flour. Shake off excess. You can buy minced ham at your local German grocery store. Put ham and onions in pan. Cook onions until they are translucent. Push them to the side and add pork chops. Fry for 3-5 minutes on each side. Remove from pan. Add white wine to pan and stir in onions and ham. Add heavy cream mustard and paprika. You can serve with potatoes or risi pisi or braised cabbage.

Risi Pisi Ingredients (for 4 people) • 1 cup raw rice • 15 cups of water • 1 teaspoon salt • ½ cup green peas, frozen • ½ cup beef broth • 1 teaspoon butter • 1 teaspoon fine diced onions • ¼ teaspoon ground white pepper Bring water to a boil. Add salt and the rice. Let it boil for 15-16 minutes. Strain the rice. Add butter and onions and peas to a pan. Add beef broth. Let it simmer for 2-3 minutes. Add the rice. Let it sit for 2-3 minutes and stir. Add parsley for garnish.

The N ATO Status of Forces Agreement and the German Supplementary Agreement permit U .S. Forces to issue driver’s licenses to its personnel. e ore o n e iss ed or es ertifi te of License, you must present a valid current driver’s license from any sovereign country or any state or territor o the n e the or es ertifi te of License is issued, however, you may continue to operate privately owned vehicles in Germany even after your underlying U .S. driver’s license has expired. This is important because some states make it di fi t or i ossi e to d te dri er s i ense by mail; sometimes the only option is to return to the U .S. to renew the license in person. I f your U .S. driver’s license has expired, you may not be able to drive when you return to the U nited t tes or es ertifi te o Li ense iss ed in Germany is not valid outside of Germany. While some states have short grace periods for renewal of an expired license, it is best to check with the state that issued your license before returning to the U .S. For further information on renewal of U .S. driver’s licenses, visit www.dmv.org/ military-drivers. I f you are stationed in Germany and your U .S. driver’s license has expired, you will also be unable to drive in European countries outside of Germany. To drive in other European countries, you must have a valid, nonexpired U .S. driver’s license and a valid international driver’s license. Ordinarily, international driver’s licenses must be issued by the country of residence. For U .S. personnel, this means such licenses should be obtained in the U .S. However, the German State of Rheinland-Pfalz has agreed to issue German international driver’s licenses to U .S. military personnel and their dependents stationed in Rheinland-Pfalz, as an exception to this rule. I f you plan to travel outside of Germany, you sho d so e o e i i r ith the tr fi nd equi pment laws in the countries you plan to travel through. Some countries requi re you to drive with the vehicle’s headlights on at all times; some countries requi re one warning vest for each seat in the vehicle; some countries requi re a full set of replacement light bulbs for the vehicle. Y ou also need to ensure that you carry all of the requi red documentation. This includes passports for the driver and all passengers and proper orders or leave documents. Although a 1991 treaty eliminated the need to carry a green insurance card within the European U nion, this is still a requi rement under U .S. Army in Europe Regulation 190-1 and U .S. Air Forces in Europe I nstruction 31-202. I n addition, many foreign countries outside the EU still requi re the green insurance card. Rockers also had wings and drink specials all night as well as an opportunity for patrons to become club members to take advantage o not on the r e dr ing but also other opportunities granted by being a member.

Remote location — I f you are looking to get off the beaten path, a car may be the only option. Affordable — Depending on where you’re heading, gas may be cheaper than a ticket.

Women’s club holds Pfennig Bazaar, offers activities Story and photo by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The German-American and I nternational Women’s Club Kaiserslautern recently celebrated its 60th anniversary and is sponsoring its annual Pfennig Bazaar March 4 to 6 in the event hall of the Kaiserslautern Gartenschau. The Pfennig Bazaar is no n s the iggest e market in the West Palatinate. I ts name originates in the former German currency, which was Deutsch Mark and Pfennigs but today is euro and cents. This bazaar is the club’s biggest fundraising event. roﬁts i e don ted to various German, American and international charities, the Federation of GermanAmerican Clubs in Germany and student exchange programs. The German-American Women’s Club was established in 1956. Today, other nationalities are included, and the name now carries the word international, as well. “Our goal is to promote tolerance within cultures and international understanding and foster friendship between German, American and other communities,” said Christine Schneider, German club president. “We offer a variety of interest groups to

include literature, international cooking, reading lessons, handicrafts and traveling, and we organize evening events, concerts, trips and monthly get-togethers.” Club members also get involved in community activities. They take care of the kindergraves at Kaiserslautern’s main cemetery and support the Fisher House at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. Momentarily GAI WC has about 150 members, of which about 80 percent are German members.

“We would love to be able to welcome new members, Americans, Germans and other nationalities, who j oin our interesting events and support the community,” Schneider said. “We even offer German classes for our American members, and no American has to be afraid of approaching us, we do speak English,” said Bruni Puetz, club treasurer. “We try everything to make Americans feel welcome and comfortable. There are the towns which I pass a thousand times on the Autobahn but have never visited. Last week when my in-laws visited, they mentioned that a recent foray into their family history brought them to one of these towns. Kirchheimbolanden is a medieval town located halfway between Kaiserslautern and Mainz with some charming features and an interesting history.

Walled City Kirchheimbolanden was once a walled city. The remains of the wall that once stretched to encircle the old city can still be explored. By climbing the grey tower near the city’s center, you can walk along the top of the wall and get a new perspective on the city. At the bottom of the wall is a mural depicting a battle from 1849 with the Prussian Army.

Schloss and Schlossgarten

As with many European villages, a highlight of the town is the Baroque style castle or “Schloss” and garden. The remaining wing of the castle now serves as a home for the elderly. Our winter visit didn’t lend itself to the most beautiful garden views, but now I know where I’ll be this spring.

Where to Eat

There are a variety of places to stop for a nibble to eat in town. Locals recommend Café Conditorei Enkler which is located at Vorstadt 2. It’s a good place for a light afternoon bite.
