he holidays are a time for family and feasting for many in the KMC. However, it can also be a time to win the war against those extra holiday pounds, which KMC members did this year with help from the Ramstein Southside Fitness Center and its Fitmas program. The Fitmas program took place Dec. 1 to 15. KMC mem-

bers were given a total of 19 classes to choose from. The free classes began as early as 6 a.m. and ended as late as 8:15 p.m. Programs ranged from cardio kickboxing and indoor cycling, to Zumba, pilates and a core-focused Delicious Abs class. Fitmas isn’t just about personal goals, it’s a family affair. “Families show up here. It’s not just an all-for-one mentality,” said Staff Sgt. Kedist Burnett, Delicious Abs instructor. “Parents See FITMAS, Page 3

Santa Claus visits military members and their children at the 86th Maintenance Group holiday party Dec. 14 on Ramstein. The 86th MXG celebrated the season by decorating a C-130J as Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer and serving milk and cookies to Santa and all his helpers. The party provided a way for the 86th MXG members and their families to have fun and foster relationships.

ALZEY, Germany — More than 130 paratroopers, comprised of Soldiers, Airmen and partner nation jumpers, airdropped toys and performed an airborne jump during the fourth annual Operation Toy Drop Dec. 13 at the Alzey Drop Zone. would like to have a few moments of your time to tell you something of great concern to me. I have had the privilege of serving in the Air Force for 35 years and there is nothing more important to me as your commander than your safety and your welfare. I recently began visiting your wings and many have heard me say that every Airman is a sensor. Let me explain what I mean by this and

what I’m asking you to do. By now most of you have seen news reports about sexual assaults and suicides in our Air Force. In my heart I know you agree with me that these incidents are tragic and often preventable. This is where you enter the picture. “Every Airman a Sensor” is focused on empowering you to act when you suspect a fellow Airman may fall prey to a sexual predator or when you see signs of suicide. It signals a fundamental shift toward a more proactive posture. Essentially, I want you to take the offensive and help attack two of

our most troublesome problems. Our Air Force has changed drastically since its creation, and I’ve witnessed our force adapt to countless challenges since I took the oath in 1977. However, one thing remains the same; an Airman’s uncompromising bond to fellow service members is rock solid, whether on the battlefield, in the shop or in the squadron. Now, more than ever, there is nothing more important than being there for friends, co-workers and family members who need help. You are the key.

I’m asking the entire USAFEAFAFRICA team to step up, step in and be part of the solution. Granted, telling a sexual predator to back off or helping someone who is distressed may make you feel uncomfortable. But that is what I am empowering you to do. Be a sensor, trust your instincts and take action! I’m counting on you to go on the offensive. If we play defense against suicides and sexual assaults we are going to lose. There is no place in our Air Force for these tragedies. Do what Airmen do — fight and win.

ome folks say they would like a peaceful and stress-free life where everything comes together as planned. No surprises and no uncertainty would be just fine. Not having any responsibility or having to face any consequences would be OK, too. Though we may at times feel the need for a break, life without challenges would be boring. Most of us have a desire to be tested; we are never satisfied, we are always craving something. We want more and demand more of ourselves. When the current position is not good enough, we are driven to improve our situation.

The Quick Fix

Some of us think everything needs to be done right away and we have little or no patience to wait out the process. Likewise, we believe problems must be fixed now, but when they are not, we give up or revert to shortcuts. Often we continue to conduct business inefficiently because that is the easy choice. Though the current system causes us much grief, the belief is no change equates to no additional work.

We think correcting the issues will be too hard or take too much time. We gravitate toward quick fixes, fads, diets and cutting corners because we are too impatient to follow normal procedures or develop sustainable practices. We tend to expend more time talking about the issues and searching for remedies rather than correcting the situation. The funny thing is some of us already have the answers, we just don’t apply them. Even though we go through the trouble to avoid doing more, it doesn’t help. We still end up with same problems and same frustrations. The time we took trying to elude doing the right thing could have been better spent fixing the issues. Reality has a way of bringing us back to where we started. When we look around and it seems like we are spinning wheels and not going anywhere, that is an indication that we chose the wrong course. Change does not come easy; it requires a commitment to start the process, stay the course and see it through. Taking the time to assess problems, create solutions and adhere to procedures may seem time-consuming; however, in the long run, it frees up opportunities to concentrate on other things. We give up a little now to gain a lot more later on.

Not many people are looking for more work than they already have; however, choosing to correct wrongs and improve processes benefits everyone. Whatever solution we choose, we need to commit to it. Most importantly, our pursuits should be realistic and sustainable or else we will see little or no gains. We can’t be too impatient to do right; if something is wrong, it is up to us to fix it. We may not be able to correct everything all at once, but while we deliberately work each issue to completion, pretty soon we will see progress.

Satisfying Work

Some of us would have liked to relax and do nothing, but that is not in our nature. Even when there is nothing to do, we take it upon ourselves to find something to do. We try to be laid back but that does not last for long. If we are not doing something worthwhile, it just doesn’t feel right. Hanging out or chilling for too long, we tend to feel as if our brain somehow deactivates and we can’t think so clearly anymore. Our motivation comes from our work. When we attempt to do less than our best, it seem as something is missing.

Sometimes, even when we are exhausted we continue to push ourselves as if there is a race against time. If we are not employed doing something, life becomes uneventful and miserable. Most of us are dedicated to our interests (careers, family, education). That is what we deem important and where we commit most of our time. On occasions, we wonder why we are that way. We jump at the opportunity to take on more responsibility and carry additional burdens. Others tend to question why someone would willingly ask for unnecessary pain but we invite those situations that push us to the limit. There is something good about having purpose in our lives; it influences us to strive for more and do our best.

We just don’t want something handed to us; we find satisfaction knowing we labored for it. It is perfectly normal to find purpose in your work and wanting to better yourself. Continue to be passionate and keep fueling your determination. That drive alone will take you places.

New hours

Vehicle Registration on Kapaun Air Station will start new hours of operation Wednesday. Every Wednesday will be a training day and the main vehicle registration ofﬁce in Bldg. 2806 will close at 1 p.m. The vehicle inspection and sub-station will not be affected by the change but will only conduct normal day-to-day operations (annual renewals, temporary to permanent plates and plate change when conducting a annual renewal transaction). New mandate requires electronic pay by 2nd Lt. Kay M. Nissen 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Electronic funds transfer for military pay will be mandatory for all service members, retirees and Department of Defense civilians beginning March 1, according to the U.S. Department of Treasury. The Defense Finance and Accounting Service encourages all affected personnel to set up a direct deposit to their bank accounts prior to the changeover. “The Treasury has estimated that the U.S. government spends about $130 million each year to print and mail paper checks,” said David McDermott, DFAS deputy director of operations. “DFAS alone spends $2 million that would otherwise be used by the military services and DOD agencies in support of our warfighters.” Team Ramstein has taken steps to help all community members transition to the paperless system. “While most of our KMC members already have a direct deposit

set up, we want to ensure that everyone has a seamless transition,” said 2nd Lt. Adrianna Perez, 86th Comptroller Squadron Financial Services flight commander. “Our office provided information to the first sergeants in the 86th Airlift Wing to help avoid any extenuating circumstances that may arise between now and March.” With the change affecting retirees and their annuitants, the KMC Retiree Activities Office also offers assistance to community members. “The RAO is more than willing to help retirees out, in the office or on the phone, for what’s needed to transition from paper to electronic deposit,” said retired Chief Master Sgt. Tylor Buckingham, the operations planning NCO for the 5th QM. “We’re donating (the toys) to ACS, and then they’re going to pass them out to kids in the KMC area.” The 5th QM, U.S. Army Europe’s only asset for providing aerial delivery support to various U.S. and allied military units throughout Europe, provided logistical support for the airdrop as well as Soldiers who jumped with the U.S. and partner nation paratroopers from U.S. Air Force C-130J

Hercules aircraft during the operation. “We have right around 20 individuals jumping,” Buckingham said. “But with the detail and everybody (involved), it’s about coming together.” “This year we have Germans, Dutch, Spanish, Polish, plus the U.S. airborne community in USAREUR (participating),” said Chief Warrant Officer 2 Scott Bockelman, the drop zone safety officer from the 5th QM. “This is one of our opportunities to bond with them and learn their tactics and procedures as well as raise toys for needy children.” Planning for the operation began four months prior, with the 5th QM coordinating with ACS and

various units throughout Europe. ACS began collecting toys in October through donations provided by the KMC and will add them to the toys dropped to be used for their holiday toy shop. “We started putting boxes out in October throughout the community in high visibility areas,” said Charlene Licciardi, the financial readiness assistant for ACS. “Units also asked for boxes so they could have people donate, so a lot of unit participation was key.” Family members were also at the event to see their loved ones perform the holiday jump, which also fulfilled their annual requirement to remain on airborne status. The jump also gave service members the opportunity to exchange airborne qualification badges with their fellow foreign airborne soldiers. Being able to jump and earn foreign wings, as well as providing gifts for the children at the event, was a wonderful experience for Air Force Capt. Kyle Yates, a security forces officer with the 435th Security Forces Squadron. “This is my first jump after getting in from jump school, so I’m pretty excited,” Yates said. “It’s a wonderful experience and I’m happy to be here.” Santa Claus, represented by Warrant Officer Eric Christianson, a jumpmaster with the 5th QM, made a special appearance during the event, parachuting into the landing zone during the operation and riding to the viewing area in the back of a Humvee with the airdropped toys before handing them out to the gathering children. “For me it was no different than my other jumpmaster duties, I just had a Santa suit on,” Christianson said. “I think it’s important to show not only the Army community but also the KMC and our partner nations that we care. “It makes me proud to be in the 5th QM and to bring a little Christmas joy to the community,” Christianson added.

he U.S. Navy has opened a Warrior Transition Program at U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern, a step that leaders say will continue to support Sailors returning to naval duties after serving ashore in combat zones. Leaders from several units at U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern joined Rear Adm. Kevin Scott, deputy commander of U.S. Naval Forces, U.S. Central Command, during a Dec. 12 ribbon cutting ceremony on Sembach Kaserne. “I share your joy in being able to open this fantastic facility,” Scott said. “It is a great Navy day.” When Scott asked the group — mostly Army officers and civilian employees — if they knew about the Navy’s program prior to its move to Germany, most said they didn’t. Following the Sept. 11,

2001, terrorist attacks, the Navy tasked Sailors to shore duty in support of ground forces in Afghanistan and Iraq. They call them “individual augmentees,” Scott said. At first, the Navy’s focus was quickly moving manpower to the fight, he said. A cook aboard an aircraft carrier could be assigned to a machine gun on a Marine ground convoy, Scott said, as an example of how different shore duty could be for some Sailors. Returning to a traditional Navy assignment was bound to be challenging. “We realized, on the back side, that we weren’t doing what we needed to do,” Scott said. “We needed to give our IAs time to transition, a down time to condition themselves before returning back to their families and loved ones and also transition them back to the Navy.” The Navy Warrior Transition program began in 2006 and moved to Camp Arifjan, Kuwait, in 2009. In your time, you executed war, preserved peace, toppled tyranny and fought terrorism. You provided aid to refugees, rebuilt infrastructures, restored governments, and assured safety and security for others. In Bosnia, Grenada, Libya and Panama, and for Desert Storm and operations Deliberate Force, Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, you were there. Under your watch, dictators Manuel Noriega, Slobodan Milosevic, Saddam Hussein and Muammar Gaddafi’s reigns of terror came to an end, and Osama Bin Laden took his last breath. You witnessed the devastation of Sept. 11, 2001, when terrorists launched coordinated suicide attacks against our country and America responded with overwhelming force to protect its citizens. Whether it was Hurricane Katrina, the devastating tsunami and nuclear disaster in Japan, or other humanitarian operations, when people called upon America, you showed up, fed the hungry, housed the displaced and calmed the chaos. You were America’s instrument of power, aid and support. When our country needed you most, you stepped up to the challenge and restored confidence in America and all it stands for. Your dedication and perseverance strengthened our determination. Regardless of your nationality, race, gender, religious belief or color, you have carried us to where we are today. You have secured victory in the midst of uncertainty. You have made this country what it is today: powerful, resilient, strong and free. Even though we have garnered much success and made significant strides, your work is not done. The road ahead will require much more from you; there is no doubt that you are up to the challenge. America will call upon you again to do your duty; I know you will be ready. You will once again lead America’s sons and daughters into battle and bring forth victory. In your time, you accumulated valuable knowledge and experiences. Build on those experiences, pass them on and multiply these tools into an arsenal no enemy can withstand. 1. Secure your vehicles and house to prevent thieves from gaining easy access. Do not leave items in open view in your car (for example, GPS systems, cell phones, military equipment, recall rosters, and other expensive or sensitive equipment).

5. Do not use or be in possession of controlled substances, whether on or off base and do not drive under the influence of alcohol or controlled substances.

6. If something sounds too good to be true, it usually is. For example, if you read about a person who is giving away free puppies, check out why. Do your own research and question why the individual is giving away the animal. Is there a health issue with the puppy?

7. Do not walk around downtown (in any city) at night alone. If someone tries to fight you, walk away if possible and call the police.

8. Ensure children are supervised IAW the KMC child supervision matrix.

Do not pay for expensive items in advance, such as a vehicle, without having inspected the item and knowing the seller’s full name and address. Be careful when you give an individual a general power of attorney. Often, a limited power of attorney will suffice (check with your legal office for details).

ore than 550 families in the KMC will have a few extra gifts this holiday season thanks to local people’s generosity. Army Community Service’s annual holiday assistance toy drive began Oct. 25 and wrapped up Dec. 9. On Dec. 11, ACS staff put roughly 2,950 toys on display, nearly filling the ballroom at the Kaiserslautern Community Activities Center on Daenner Kaserne. Army Sgt. Erick Galkowski of the 773rd Civil Support Team said he appreciates it when the Army organizes holiday support to local families. He picked out something for his daughter, Aleksandra, 2. “It makes it nicer over here and it allows us to have something better to give your kids,” Galkowski said. “It gives you the opportunity to save some more money.” The KMC has a history of supporting service members during the holidays, said Jeffrey Crisp, U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern’s civilian deputy commander. “The fact that we come together as one to do something special for our Soldiers and their families is just amazing,” Crisp said. “And it gets bigger and better every year.” The program is designed to reduce stress for parents who may not have the means to provide presents during the holidays, said Michelle Thomas,

cates. ACS also gave 300 gift cards to older children. “As a community we are family. We’re away from our loved ones in the states. All we have is each other,” Thomas said. “We come together to make sure that everyone has a wonderful Christmas, a wonderful holiday.” During AFN Kaiserslautern’s annual Holiday Spirit Drive, ACS joined the Air Force Angel Tree and Marine

Corps Toys For Tots program to collect toys during the season. During the daylong event, community members donated hundreds of gifts. The KMC Sergeants Major Association rolled up $500 worth of toys in two shopping carts. One older gentleman dropped of a child’s bicycle. “Our community members always answer the call,” Thomas said. “They are so giving. They believe in family.”

Make this holiday memorable ith only a few days left until Christmas, most of us are probably wrapping things up (both figuratively and literally), hanging the mistletoe, defrosting the turkey and making those special holiday treats. For those of us tempted to engage in a last ditch shopping frenzy, it is important to

Chaz Deering 39th Movement Control Battalion Public Affairs, 21st TSC BAGRAM, Afghanistan — Command teams of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command’s 39th Transportation Battalion (Movement Control) conducted a weeklong pre-deployment site survey with the deployed 49th Joint Movement Control Battalion recently. The 39th Trans. Bn. is due to replace the 49th JMCB in the spring. Travel time was several days for the PDSS nine-person team to reach

their future area of deployment. For Lt. Col. Michael Knapp, incoming 39th Trans. Bn. commander, and Lt. Col. Charles Blumenfeld, 49th JMCB commander, it was reunion, as both previously served in the 39th Trans. Bn. “It was good to see Knapp again, as we were both captains together in the 39thTrans. Bn. back in 1998,” Blumenfeld said. “The 39th Trans. Bn.’s area of responsibility was much different back then. We did not have as many movement control teams, branch movement control teams or a truck company.”

After a brief reunion, the command teams departed to Kandahar for a short visit with the 45th Sustainment Brigade and various MCTs. Meanwhile, the staff worked with their counterparts to gain a distinctive insight on their processes, procedures and areas of responsibility. The PDSS gave the commander and staff a sneak peek into daily downrange operations. The experience will allow for better pre-deployment training in the coming months. Craig Bowman, USAFE band vocalist. “We also perform at community events by request of commanders, chiefs, first sergeants and civilian leaders.” The USAFE band has performed at a variety of change of command ceremonies, dining-ins and -outs, retirement ceremonies, military balls and community outreach concerts locally and throughout Europe in support of the Air Force mission. Most recently, USAFE’s Touch ‘N Go played at the 2012 ESPN Armed Forces Classic basketball game. Touch ‘N Go is one of many groups in the USAFE band and their set list includes rock, country, pop, and R&B, covering the complete spectrum of American popular music. “It was great to be a part of the

Robert Browning, USAFE’s Touch ‘N Go percussionist. “Getting to play for a worldwide audience and having friends and family be able to see it back home was immense.” Being in the band isn’t all performance and rehearsal. The band members also have collateral duties for the unit: finance, supply, transportation, operations and public affairs. “Having collateral duties in addition to our primary duty as musicians can be challenging,” Bowman said. “To rise above that challenge, we rehearse and maintain Air Force specialty code skill level standards, just as all Air Force career fields do.” Despite its challenges, as Airman musicians, they have a job to bring people together. “Music is a powerful tool that brings people together from foreign nations and cultures,” Bowman said. “It serves as the very fabric of building partnerships with other nations and their military forces, communities and civic leaders.” With an average of 300 performances a year and live audiences ranging from 50 to 5,000, the USAFE band gets the opportunity to reach out to

hose voices heard on the radio come from people with different backgrounds, ranks and ages. They greet listeners on their way to work, during those slow moments throughout work and on their way home. “We get the opportunity to provide accurate, entertaining and factual information to the military community,” said Army Sgt. Gene Muller, American Forces Network Kaiserslautern Eagle morning show host. “The intent is to be part of a show that represents one found in the states, whilst maintaining military bearing. We have the opportunity to show that even while performing a military duty, we can compete at a level that would represent the best commercial options available back home.” The mission for these service members is simple: inform and highlight fellow members of the KMC in Germany. “It’s a very rewarding career because you get to see all the wonderful things our military members are doing at work and in the community,” said Senior Airman Tory Secrist, AFN Kaiserslautern disc jockey. “We get to tell their story or highlight what they are doing. You get to meet a variety of people and everyday is different.” In order to do this, DJs spend multiple hours preparing for shows.

“We spend a lot of time getting our shows together. We use entertainment and news websites to gather information about the artists we play and movie and music industry news,” said Demarrio Spence, AFN Kaiserslautern Eagle morning show host. “We research our interviews and come up with on-air contests to give away prizes. We also use what we call ‘24-hour show prep,’ which means we take note of things that happen to us throughout the day and figure out ways to work them into our shows.” Running a radio show isn’t as easy as pushing buttons and talking about certain topics, DJs have to be ready in case something goes unexpected. “If you have a technical malfunction during a show, it’s difficult to play that off if you’re live,” Secrist said. “You have to keep calm during your show and improvise if the song doesn’t start playing or if someone walks in the studio when the mic is hot. Or sometimes your interview subject can’t find the right words and you have to coach them along.” Even though AFN personnel get official training before appearing on a radio show, these DJs work with each other and provide each other on-the-job training. “The opportunity to learn from a person who is able to effectively communicate information is somebody that you want to learn from,” Muller said. “Learning becomes an exciting opportunity and something that you can actually have fun with.”

Some personnel have recently come across this type of work, but others have been doing this type of work for years. “I grew up in the military, I’ve been a DJ since I was in high school right up the road in Bitburg, but I’ve done it for the Army in Würzburg and here in Kaiserslautern,” said Sergeant 1st Class Ian Camejo, guest DJ. “I’m assigned to 21st Theater Sustainment Command, but I host the Monday afternoon show as guest DJ in a partnership between AFN Kaiserslautern and 21st TSC.” At the end of the day, DJs feel like this is a busy job, which requires more work than some listeners give them credit for. “Many times, when I tell people that I work at AFN, they say, ‘It must be nice to listen to music all day’. This couldn’t be further from the truth,” said Master Sgt. Colleen Jones, AFN Kaiserslautern DJ. “In fact, as a DJ, when you put a song on for the audience, you are using that time to answer a phone call about traffic or weather, checking the latest exchange rate or prepping for a contest giveaway. The truth is, it’s a very high-paced job that takes a lot of multitasking.” So, remember that person on the air isn’t simply talking into a microphone and listening to music over the course of a few hours. They’re taking care of the community by keeping service members and their families informed and aware on events happening around them.

here’s more to lighting a Christmas tree on Baumholder than just pulling a switch. The U.S. Army Garrison Baumholder’s Christmas tree lighting ceremony Dec. 6 included musical performances by children from the U.S. and German communities, the first of which was Sarah Holliday. She braved the cold and entertained the crowd with her rendition of “Silent Night,” just moments before Santa made his appearance on a shiny red fire truck in front of the Rheinlander Community Club. Traditionally, Santa is assisted in lighting the Christmas tree by two students, one from Smith Elementary School and another from Wetzel Elementary School. This year, Rowe Tampus from Smith Elementary and Alondra Orsini from Wetzel Elementary were chosen to assist Santa. On the count of three they all pulled the switch and hundreds of lights came to life on the 35-foot Christmas tree in front of the Rheinlander Community Club. His job done, Santa made his way into the club with dozens of guests

Musical performances by students from the Smith and Wetzel Elementary Schools and the Baumholder Middle/High School entertained the guests while Santa listened to the many Christmas requests from the Children. Special guests for the evening were the first grade students from the German elementary school who performed several holiday favorites in German and English. “Performing for the American community was a wonderful experi-

ence for the children,” said Ursula Lambur, a German elementary school teacher. “The children do not really get an opportunity to experience the American way of life and traditions so being a part of the American celebration was an excellent learning experience for them. They all enjoyed the evening and we hope to continue interacting with the American community.” The entertainment continued with Natasha Torres signing “All I Want For Christmas Is You.” Mindy Malenius then performed a piano solo and was followed with a duet by Nicole and Camille Torres. Natasha returned to perform a duet with her sister Nicole Torres. There were also solo performances by Rachel Holliday, Christen Holliday and Shannon Liederitz. After the celebration, Business and Recreation Division Chief Jacqui Haggerty said, “It was such a pleasure to work with so many wonderful professionals who knew their ‘role to play’ and executed that role brilliantly. The feedback from participants and command has been nothing but complimentary — and the credit for that goes directly to each and every person involved in making this event such a rousing success.”

Alterations keeps KMC looking sharp Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Holly Cook 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The Bablon Alterations shop on Ramstein might be tiny, but it serves a huge purpose. As the only alterations shop on base, the staff stays busy by helping more than 54,000 military personnel and their families here in the KMC. “We have roughly 150 members of the KMC coming in per day to drop off or pick up their clothing,” said Dhiaa Zeidlr, owner of the alterations shop. Zeidlr has been working in alteration shops for American Installations since he came to Spangdahlem Air Base in 2000. He now owns and works at the alterations shop, which opened June 15, 2012. “I came to Ramstein to open my own shop,” said Zeidlr. “Helping people by giving them great ser-

vice every time they come in is what I like doing.” In order to give each costumer the great service they need, each person working at the shop must have the adequate training. Being knowledgeable in customer service, sewing and knowing the military clothing regulations is a must. “Most of the employees here come in knowing how to sew and how to provide good customer service,” said Zeidlr. “Most of them even know the different military regulations because they have a family member in the military.” Every employee goes through on-the-job training when hired so they can learn the proper way to do their job. Knowing the different regulations for military clothing could mean the difference between someone being in regulation or not. “I need to have people who know the regulations so if someone comes in and is unsure of what they need, we can make certain that they get the correct part for their uniform,” said Zeidlr. Helping military members look sharp isn’t the only thing the ladies and gentlemen of the alterations shop offer to the KMC. Along with military uniform alterations, they also offer alterations on civilian clothing, embroidering and many special projects that may be required. “Many people think that we just do military clothes,” said Zeidlr. “We also do a lot of special orders for customers as well.” Patrons can get anything from cloth name tags embroidered and sewn onto scrapbooks to customized Airman battle uniform jackets done at the alterations shop. Having a shop that is diverse in its offered products makes it easier for the shop to help

he rumors that Germany does not have a Santa Claus are true. So, if there’s no Santa there are also no reindeer and no presents to open on Christmas Day, right? Not quite. German children actually receive treats and gifts twice during the holiday season and on both occasions earlier than American children: once on Dec. 6, St. Nicholas Day, and on Dec. 24, Christmas Eve. The Children from Baumholder’s Wetzel Child Development Center recently benefited from this tradition when the German Santa Claus, or St. Nicholas, visited the center and distributed treats to the children. Santa Claus, or St. Nicholas, was actually part of a delegation from the nearby village of Berglangenbach. “The children were very open and attentive,” said Gerda Welch, who for the second year dressed herself

as Santa Claus to hand out treats to American children. Assisting St. Nicholas was Viktor Teichner, chairman of the citizens association from Berglangenbach, who asked, “Is there anything greater than seeing the shining eyes of children as they experience the spirit of Christmas?” Teichner, along with Helmut Theis, mayor of Berglangenbach, Chaplain Annette Schmid, who serves the communities of Berglangenbach and Berschweiler, and Peter Lang, mayor of the District of Baumholder, accompanied Santa on her rounds of the Wetzel CDC. Lt. Col. Michael D. Sullivan, U.S. Army Garrison Baumholder commander, and his wife Julia welcomed the visitors and escorted them as they dropped in on the various age groups in the Wetzel CDC. “It is our intension to make the children of our American neighbors happy and to introduce the German tradition of St. Nicholas to them,” said Theis, adding that the U.S. community and Berglangenbach enjoy a longstanding friendly relationship.

Mrs. Sullivan also accompanied Teichner and Santa a week prior when they visited the German kindergarten in nearby Berschweiler. Mrs. Sullivan presented small tokens of appreciation to the personnel of the kindergarten

and told them, “Your work with the children is frequently underestimated. Thank you for all that you do.” German kindergartens in the nearby communities often have American children enrolled in their programs.

Wollaston U.S. Army NATO Brigade Cowboy hats and boots were the order of the day recently at the Kazabra Club on Pulaski Barracks as country music star Aaron Tippin pulled into Kaiserslautern as part of his “Stars for Stripes” Armed Forces Entertainment tour. Tippin, a longtime supporter and advocate of the U.S. military, got his life, as well as his career, started in the military. “My daddy was an Air Force flight instructor the day I was born,” Tippin told the crowd. “The day my first single broke on country radio, I was in Saudi Arabia with Bob Hope performing for the Soldiers. Country radio didn’t start my career, the military did.” So it was only fitting that the country crooner is touring various Army and Air Force installations across Europe, playing hits and enjoying every minute he spends with the troops. “Somebody asked me last night what’s the favorite part of your show,” Tippin said backstage. “I said, ‘When it’s over. When I can get down off stage and interact and say thanks.’ If I didn’t sing a note, I just want to personally go out there and shake their hand and tell them Merry Christmas.” This is Tippin’s seventh year doing the “Stars for Stripes” tour. Last year he played acoustic sets for the Soldiers in Afghanistan. For most artists, the grind of touring and being on the road wears them down, but watching Tippin during his show, you

get a sense that he completely enjoys traveling and doing these performances. “These are fun,” he said with a grin. “Especially when I’m downrange. I mean, that’s a pretty captive audience.” Joining Tippin on his tour were The Lowry Sisters, an Americana/country trio hailing from Northridge, Calif. They, too, have strong ties to the military. One of their grandfathers was the recipient

of the Silver Star in World War II. They look at a tour like this one as their way of saying thank you to the troops and bringing them a little piece of home. “A lot of our family was military,” said lead singer Allison Lowry. “So being able to do this is really special. To be able to give back, you know, and just have them enjoy our show and bring some joy to them and thank them for what they do for us every day.”

FEA: Are you strong, creative, bold enough for the job? The Future Educators Association is an international organization that serves to promote teaching as a challenging and rewarding career. This goal is especially important in critical shortage areas such as math, science and special education. Also, FEA is dedicated to attracting exemplary future educators, especially those from varied cultural and ethnic backgrounds. The national FEA website asks would-be educators, “Are you strong, creative and bold enough for the job?” And the Ramstein High School FEA is no different. “The good health of our nation’s schools depends on bringing into classrooms new teachers who are the brightest and best among today’s students,” said sponsor Bamma McCoy. These new teachers must not only have a realistic understanding of teaching as a profession, but also be equipped with numerous unique skills. Currently, RHS has 25 members in its FEA and an elected board, including president Connor Walters, vice president Rachel Plescha and historian Megan O’Day. McCoy has been the sponsor over the last five years and has seen the group grow and take on more student-level responsibility. Interestingly, while education still tends to be a female dominated field, the RHS association has a higher percentage of boys participating and the group has its first male president. So, what do FEA members do? According to this year’s theme, they strive to “engage, encourage and

inspire.” They accomplish this goal by meeting weekly and going through a series of student-led exercises that explore teaching as a career option and focus on educational issues that are relevant to the profession. Another main objective of the association is to prepare for the annual FEA conference, which is held from Jan. 29 to Feb. 1 in Garmisch, Germany. The conference affords students the opportunity to attend workshops ranging from learning styles and strategies to the psychology of learning and educational technology. Additionally, there will be guest speakers presenting, such as the 2012 Teacher of the Year, student teacher interns and Ramstein High’s very own Michael Brust, who will introduce FEA members to the concept of flipped mastery. The FEA conference also offers education focused competitions. There is an impromptu speaking competition in which students are presented a dilemma and then asked to come up with a solution. After the solution is presented, opposing teams are given the opportunity to provide constructive criticism to the other teams. Junior Bobby Ramirez, who has been described by McCoy as being an excellent public speaker and having a commanding presence, is a likely candidate to compete in the impromptu competition. Also in preparation for the conference, FEA members must produce a 10-minute lesson plan and record themselves teaching that lesson. This year, RHS FEA members are going to Ramstein Elementary School to

teach a good health-themed lesson that focuses on healthy eating. The conference also features a logo and a public service announcement competition. Junior Devin McGleean has created this year’s logo and the members have chosen the theme “Do Something Big” for their public service announcement. Ten members are going to the conference this year and various forms of fundraising have already taken place. One of the primary fundraisers has been working in the school store. However, the Veterans of Foreign Wars has generously donated $400 to the conference fund. Also, the FEA members are using a video presentation to request funds from the PTSO. Senior Lauren Codina described the FEA conference as an “opportunity to learn methods that you can not only

use when teaching children, but skills you can use in other real life situations.” It is clear that educators make a huge impact on not only students in the classroom, but society as a whole. The importance of the FEA thus cannot be understated. All of the experiences FEA students gain from participation in the association appreciably contribute to the growth and development of the future generation of dedicated, skillful and innovative educators. Walters, a junior, summed up the importance of the FEA when he said, “FEA enlightens students as to how teaching affects kids. By realizing teaching is a great profession at an early age, while still in school, it sheds a whole new light on how much teachers care and how hard they work.” (by Holly Freeman)

‘Silent Night’ originates in Austria by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs “Silent Night” is known as the world’s most popular Christmas song. Currently, it can be heard all over the world in all languages. The song originates in Austria. On the afternoon of Christmas Eve in 1818, the priest of St. Nikolaus Church in Oberndorf near Salzburg, Joseph Mohr, tried to play the organ. He was very desperate because there was only a scratching sound coming out of the instrument. The church and the organ were damaged by high waters from the Salzach River. For Mohr, a Christmas celebration without music was impossible. So, he gave the text of a poem he wrote in 1816 to his friend and local teacher Franz Xaver Gruber and asked him to compose a melody for it. He chose this poem because it was in German and easy to understand for the local population, who mainly were seamen on the Salzach River. During the priest’s time, the church liturgy was mainly in Latin not to be understood by those poor people. Just in time for the midnight service, Gruber presented Mohr an easy melody for two soloists with choir and guitar accompaniment. The local people liked “Stille Nacht” performed by the priest singing tenor and playing the guitar, and the teacher singing bass. In fall of the following year, Mohr left Oberndorf to be stationed in another town in the state of Salzburg. The new Christmas

song was forgotten. But in 1824, when the organ again needed repair work, the organbuilder found the text and notes of “Stille Nacht” in the choir loft. He asked Gruber for a copy to take with him on his trips. This way, many musicians from Tyrol, who were traveling throughout Europe, included the song in their repertory. In 1832, a publisher from Leipzig printed “Stille Nacht” for the ﬁrst time, but the names of Mohr and Gruber were not mentioned. They never knew what a success their song, even in America, was. Joseph Mohr, the priest, died at the age of 55 as a poor man. Many years later, a controversy about the authorship of the original version was set aside. Today a monument of Mohr in Oberndorf honors his work. To date, the Christmas song “Stille Nacht” has been translated into about 300 languages and dialects. Due to bad damages by high waters, St. Nicholas Church had to be torn down between 1906 and 1913. In the ﬁrst half of the 20th century, the village of Oberndorf was placed about 800 meters upstream into high water secured areas, and a new church was built. Between 1924 and 1937, a Silent Night memorial chapel was erected on the grounds of the former church. About 150,000 persons from throughout the world visit the chapel each year. In 2011, the Austrian UNESCO commission added the song to the national list of intangible cultural heritage and recommended it for the general list of international UNESCO cultural heritage.

Off-base residents must recycle Christmas trees properly

The environmental office of the Kaiserslautern County Administration asks KMC residents to properly recycle their Christmas trees. Residents can drop off the trees at the official collecting places for green waste in their villages or they can place their Christmas trees at the edge of the road in front of the houe by 6 a.m. on pick-up days. The trees will be used to make compost, so residents are asked to make sure all decorations, including tinsel, are removed. he holiday season is upon us and for some it means the stress and anxiety of battling last-minute crowds at the mall, frantically cleaning for visiting in-laws and agonizing over preparing the perfect holiday meal. But not you. You are a holiday planning superstar, and your perfectly planned holiday checklist has been finished for weeks. Your halls are decked, your stockings are hung by the chimney with care and all of your gifts follow the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s recommendations for safe toys and gifts. Wait, you haven’t done the last one? Maybe you’re not the holiday planning superstar you think you are, or maybe you aren’t aware of the serious risks involved in giving unsafe holiday toys and gifts. In 2007, the CPSC reported 18 toy-related deaths and an estimated 170,100 hospital emergency-room treated injuries to children under 15. Although these consequences are real, prevention is as simple as following a few safety guidelines when shopping for the perfect holiday gift. The CPSC recommends the following toy safety shopping tips:

Under 3 Years Old

Children under 3 tend to put everything in their mouths. Avoid buying toys intended for older children that may have small parts that pose a choking danger. Never let children of any age play with deflated or broken balloons because of the choking danger. Avoid marbles, balls and games with balls that have a diameter of 1.75 inches or less. These products also pose a choking hazard to young children. Children at this age pull, prod and twist toys. Look for toys that are well-made with tightly secured eyes, noses and other parts. Avoid toys that have sharp edges and points.

Ages 3 to 5

Avoid toys that are constructed with thin, brittle plastic that might easily break into small pieces or leave jagged edges. Look for household art materials, including crayons and paint sets, marked with the designation “ASTM D-4236.” This means the product has been reviewed for chronic health hazards and, if necessary, the product has been labeled with cautionary information. Teach older children to keep their toys away from their younger brothers and sisters.

Ages 6 to 12

For all children, adults should check toys periodically for breakage and potential hazards. Damaged

or dangerous toys should be repaired or thrown away. If buying a toy gun, be sure the barrel, or the entire gun, is brightly colored so that it’s not mistaken for a real gun. If you buy a bicycle for any age child, buy a helmet too, and make sure the child wears it. Teach all children to put toys away when they’re finished playing so they don’t trip over them or fall on them. … And Always Read the Label The CPSC requires toy manufacturers to meet stringent safety standards and to label certain toys that could be a hazard for younger children. Look for labels that give age recommendations and use that information as a guide. Labels on toys that state “not recommended for children under 3 ... contains small parts,” are labeled that way because they may pose a choking hazard to children under 3. Toys should be developmentally appropriate to suit the skills, abilities and interests of the child. The CPSC oversees the safety of toys and many other consumer products. ervice members and civilians came together for the Ramstein Jujitsu Club, by taking part in the martial arts combative sport at an Army combative gym on Rhine Ordnance Barracks. Brazilian jujitsu focuses on grappling and ground fighting; a concept where a smaller, less powerful person will be able to defend themselves from a larger opponent, employing holds, throws and paralyzing blows to submit a foe. Along with the physical training, students here go over different selfdefense techniques. Many different people have attended the class all with different skill levels. Some people practice jujitsu for the technique, others for fitness or even just for selfdefense. “Jujitsu is known as the gentle or smooth martial art but it is also known for being technical in a very in-depth manner, which allows it to be played out like a chess match of the body that makes you sore like lifting weights while making you breathe like cardio,” said Staff. Royce Gracie, a mixed martial arts fighter, was one of the first people who brought Brazilian jujitsu to the U.S.

and over time the fighting style has blossomed into an entire sport, being widely used in many different grappling tournaments and mixed martial arts competitions. Brazilian jujitsu is an easy going spin on the martial art lifestyle, and just like any martial art, it teaches discipline and self-defense techniques that Airmen could use to be combat ready. “I recommend Brazilian jujitsu to everyone I meet,” Nicholson said. “You can see that Brazilian jujitsu is
