EUCOM, AFRICOM, Space Force activate new service component command by 2nd Lt. Gabriele Gocso U.S. European Command U.S. European Command, U.S. Africa Command and U.S. Space Force officially activated the U.S. Space Forces Europe and Africa component command at a ceremony in Ramstein, Dec. 8. SPACEFOREUR-AF is the newest service component under EUCOM and AFRICOM with their permanent headquarters at Ramstein Air Base. EUCOM and AFRICOM are the latest combatant commands to establish a space component, following in the footsteps of U.S. Indo-Pacific Command and U.S. Central Command. “For Germany, the U.S. are the most important partner in developing and expanding space capabilities. The activation of the U.S. Space Forces Europe and Africa component at Ramstein Air Base emphasizes both the fast-growing military significance of the space domain and the importance of Germany as a reliable ally and base for the U.S. Armed Forces.” said Boris Pistorius, the German See SPACE FORCES, Page 3

Enhancing F-35 collaboration: Senior leaders gather for F-35 Air Chief meeting at Ramstein

Participants of the Fall 2023 Air Chief Symposium pose for a photo following the meeting at Ramstein Air Base, Dec. 4. The meeting served as a platform for Air Chiefs and officials to engage in constructive dialogue, pooling together their expertise and experiences. Cameron Silver

by Dreshawn Murray United States Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa Public Affairs High-ranking military officials convened Monday at Ramstein Air Base for the Fall 2023 F-35 Air Chief Symposium. U.S. Air Force Gen. James B. Hecker, Commander of United States Air Forces in Europe-Air Forces Africa and NATO Allied Air Command, chaired the gathering as a platform for high-level updates and collaborative discussions to shape the future course of integration of fifth-generation aircraft into Allied and partner operations. “The symposium aimed to align our perspectives on shared concerns, chart a course for future endeavors, and explore the potential of fifth-generation fighters in deterring threats,” said General Hecker. “These aircraft enhance

survivability and lethality through cutting-edge technologies and advanced systems.” Countries in attendance included the United States, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Israel, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. The meeting served as a platform for Air Chiefs and officials to engage in constructive dialogue, pooling together their expertise and experiences. At the core of the discussions laid a crucial focal point: the concept of cross-servicing agreements. CSAs allow nations to leverage foreign airfields and maintenance resources for landing and servicing their aircraft if needed, extending capabilities beyond a nation’s own territorial confines. “The significance of the crossservicing agreements cannot be

overstated, especially in the context of agile combat employments, enabling seamless cooperation and collaboration between allied and partner nations,” said Mr. Brendan Andrus, F-35 Program Analyst. “CSAs also maximizes interoperability by enabling any F-35 to land at any F-35 base, regardless of nation, and refuel, repair, rearm, and return to the fight.” The F-35 program consists of eight partner nations, including the United States and nine foreign military sales nations. Currently, six European nations operate the F-35 on home soil, lead by Italy in 2015 and followed by Norway, Israel, the Netherlands, United Kingdom, and Denmark. USAFE-AFAFRICA marked a significant milestone with the reception of its inaugural F-35 delivery to RAF Lakenheath in the United Kingdom in 2019.

Belgium, Finland, Germany, Poland, and Switzerland will receive their first aircraft by 2030. In 2022, the momentum towards acquiring F-35 aircraft gained further traction with Germany agreeing to procure F-35s. “In this ever-evolving security landscape, the reality remains clear; we cannot fight alone. Integration and interoperability stand as imperative pillars, essential to our collective strength and deterrence,” said Andrus. The increasing number of nations obtaining F-35s in Europe signals a noteworthy trend, fostering expectations that the region will host over 600 operational F-35s by 2030. “Collaborating closely with allied partners, the U.S. Air Force has gained significant insights from operationalizing the F-35,” said Hecker. “These insights form

the foundation for discussions among air chiefs and are instrumental in devising strategies to enhance interoperability levels among European F-35 fleets. This leverages the wealth of knowledge accumulated in recent years.” The incorporation of the F-35 into NATO’s framework marks a significant milestone in the Alliance’s evolution. The deployment of F-35s not only signifies a technological leap with the inclusion of a formidable fifth-generation aircraft but also strategically positions these assets across the European theater. The presence of the F-35s offers the U.S., Allies, and partners a versatile and highly capable system, enhancing collective defense measures while reinforcing the NATO Alliance’s commitment to leveraging top-tier military capabilities for regional security and deterrence.

1st ACOS: The best done better by Senior Airman Madelyn Keech 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Ramstein Air Base has a long history, with many supporting units ensuring the mission gets done. The 1st Air and Space Communications Operations Squadron is one of those units. From July 1962 - June 1993 the 2063rd Communications Squadron, out of Lindsey Air Station in Wiesbaden, provided secure communications support to commanders spanning across NATO. The squadron was later reactivated in May 2003, reassigned to Ramstein AB and given the name it still honors today. As the only ACOS in the Air Force, the 1st has supported the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing since their redesignation in 2009 by enabling integrated theater air operations, while also ensuring the ACOS mission is executed effectively. “Our mission is simple - deliver and defend enterprise and tactical C5ISR capabilities to enable the kill chain, anytime, anywhere,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Phillip Alvarez, 1st ACOS commander. “This is the importance of the squadron; it brings intelligence to the fight.” Command, control, communications, computers, coalition, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance technology enables the warfighter to gain information

dominance and decisive lethality, Alvarez explained. “It’s the ‘nervous system’ of the military, a collection of systems when used collectively to enable the “muscle” side of the military; weapon systems, platforms and troops,” Alvarez said. The ACOS is divided into five sections to comprehensively accomplish their mission: global command and control systems, infrastructure, joint worldwide intelligence communications systems, security, and the theater network operations center. These sections synchronize to complete C5ISR capabilities within the U.S. Air Forces in Europe Air Forces Africa, U.S. Air Force Global Strike Command, and U.S. Air Forces Central Command areas of responsibility. “The effectiveness of airpower depends on Airmen ensuring assets are employed efficiently and effectively to achieve commander’s intent,” said Chief Master Sgt. Brian Herre, 1st ACOS senior enlisted leader, referencing the Air Force Doctrine Publication 1-1. “Operations in denied, degraded and disrupted environments require flexible and adaptive Airmen who maintain unity of effort by exercising the philosophy of mission command, based on trust, shared awareness and shared intent.” Since July 2022, the 1st ACOS has had the official authority to operate their BlackNet, subsequent-

ly accelerating the U.S. Air and Space Force missions, and effectively applying the agile combat employment doctrine efforts supporting USAFE missions. BlackNet is an all-network transport system capable of operating in all environments, Alvarez explained. After over 10 years in development, it has allowed 1st ACOS personnel to access the network in austere locations by combining methods of communication such as satellite, cell coverage, fiber optic or ethernet. “We started BlackNet based on a need to quickly provide Airborne Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance data to our most forward-based warfighters,” Alvarez said. “What we found through the process is BlackNet is a gamechanger and epitomizes the prior Chief of Staff of the Air Force’s call to accelerate change or lose.” BlackNet and the personnel who manage it, recently demonstrated the effectiveness of the system when faced with a connectivity issue that could have stopped the mission in its tracks. “Recently, in a location we had BlackNet, we had a Defense Information Systems Agency outage that would have affected operations,” Alvarez said. “However, by using our BlackNet and our ability to rapidly maneuver, we were able to extend services over commercial satellite and cell phone capabilities and allowed the mission to happen.”

BlackNet combines any method of communication like satellite, cell coverage, fiber optic or ethernet to create a meshed network and ensure users stay connected. Black networks are not new, but for USAFE-AFAFRICA, the speed to execute, proliferation over two continents, savings in circuit costs, equipment and manning, reliability and now the Authority to Operate, make the 1st ACOS BlackNet mission essential. Megan M. Beatty

The 1st ACOS is currently the only unit that operates the BlackNet system, however, they are working closely with different major commands to build similar capabilities — ultimately strengthening the DOD’s potential. “Expanding the use of BlackNet for the DoD creates game changing potential to the way warfighters communicate, enabling new levels of connectivity and communication that were previously impossible,” Alvarez said. “By leveraging a combination of technologies such as wireless networks, cloud computing, military satellites, commercial satellites and fiber networks, BlackNet can provide seamless connectivity and reliable, resilient communications even in contested or degraded environments.” The 150 Airmen and DoD civilians who currently make up the ACOS team continue to show the world their desire to enhance and

grow the Air and Space Forces capabilities. In its 61 years as a squadron, the teams’ dedication has earned them many awards including 11 Air Force Outstanding Unit Awards, an Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with a Combat ‘V’ Device, and a Navy Meritorious Unit Citation for its support during the Apollo Manned Space Flight Program. “I have the privilege of leading 150 of the world’s finest Airmen, civilians and contractors, and I am really focused on making sure that we take care of them and their families,” Alvarez said. “They are the biggest asset to the success of our mission.” Delivering on its slogan, “The Best Done Better,” the 1st ACOS uses teamwork and innovation to be flexible and achieve the mission to deliver, operate and defend C5ISR capabilities.

between 3 and 30 megahertz. HF technologies are suitable for long distance communications across intercontinental distances and mountainous terrains which prevent line-of-sight communications, and are jam-resistant — all of which are particularly crucial for military operations in austere environments. “HF is notoriously difficult to jam and is an art form as much as it is a science,” Brown said. “Through Noble Skywave, our communicators have the opportunity to experiment with antenna configurations, understand atmospherics, and truly become experts in their craft.” This year’s team was led by Tech. Sgt. Roger Alvarez, 1st CBCS, Noncommissioned officer in charge, Alpha Team. While it’s always ful-

filling to win, Alvarez said he views the importance of the competition as a game changer for the opportunity it provides to train his Airmen. “High Frequency communications is typically learned and practiced in a classroom environment,” Alvarez said. “Noble Skywave Competition uniquely provides our new technicians with invaluable hands-on field experience, an aspect often missing from standard HF courses. Additionally, participants have the chance to hone their skills in global communications by strategically planning interactions throughout various day and night scenarios.” In this year’s competition, the longest connection the 1st CBCS made was with 8th Signal Regiment from the Royal Australian Army located in Queensland, Australia, approximately 16,122 kilometers away, but the connections go deeper than just making contact on the radio, Alvarez added. The opportunity to practice together and share tactics, techniques and procedures with NATO allies, and partners was paramount and will certainly pay dividends in the future to our national defense and global security. The 1st Combat Communications Squadron is assigned to the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing at Ramstein Air Base and rapidly deploys, operates and defends tactical communications and airfield systems to the forward edge of the battlespace in support of combined forces air component commander and joint objectives.

Towns, previously served as Battalion Command Sgt. Maj. for 2-410 Brigade Support Battalion, 177th Armored Brigade, located at Camp Shelby, Mississippi. Towns has also served as Battalion Command Sgt. Maj. for the 3d Special Forces Group Support Battalion. In keeping with military traditions, the passing of the colors was conducted during the ceremony. The passing of the colors represents not only the unit’s lineage and honor but also the Soldiers’ loyalty and unity. The custodian of the colors during the ceremony was Sgt. Maj. Tatika Williams, operations Sgt. Maj., 16th SB. Williams passed the colors to Aguillen, signifying her last act of allegiance to the outgoing senior enlisted advisor. Aguillen passed the colors to Col. Alexander, commander, 16th SB, signifying the return of the responsibility that was entrusted upon him. Alexander then passed the colors to Towns, demonstrating his confidence in his ability to handle command responsibility. Towns passed the colors back to Williams, completing the traditional passing of the unit colors to demonstrate his first act

as the 16th Sustainment Brigade senior enlisted advisor. Although Aguillen’s time with the 16th Sustainment Brigade has come to an end, he knows he will never forget his time served and those he served with. Alexander, the host during the ceremony, spoke a few parting words to Aguillen. “Everywhere you go, your reputation will precede you,” said Alexander. “The Officers and Soldiers of the organization will strive to emulate you, because no matter where you serve, you make units and people better.” When talking about his time as Knight’s Brigade senior enlisted advisor and what it meant to him to serve the brigade, Aguillen quoted Matthew Kelly- “The people we surround ourselves with either raise or lower our standards. They either help us to become the best version of ourselves or encourage us to become lesser versions of ourselves.” “This is what this brigade has done,” said Aguillen. “They challenged me to be the best professional version of myself and I thank you.”

24/7 fitness centers access promotes Army readiness, contributes to higher morale Story and photos by Linda Lambiotte U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Thanksgiving Day marks the beginning of the holiday season for many of us, presenting multiple occasions to indulge in exquisite meals and enjoy plenty of extra relaxing time. As the new year approaches, conversations about “new year’s resolutions” commonly revolve around fitness goals, leading many individuals to consider gym memberships. This surge typically results in a significant increase in gym memberships during the initial months of the year, often leading to overcrowding as people strive to improve their fitness, shed weight, or embark on a healthier lifestyle journey. Recently, the U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz announced 24/7 access for most of its fitness centers, expanding availability to all employees within the footprint. This initiative ensures that the facilities will remain open and available at all times, regardless of holidays, weekends, or the time of day, providing greater flexibility and convenience to individuals seeking to prioritize their health and wellness. “Providing 24/7 access benefits the Army as a whole because it supports readiness and enhances service delivery without mounting costs,” said Daniel Washington, fitness, athletics, and aquatics chief. The first Physical Fitness Centers to start offering 24/7 access were the Landstuhl Fitness Center and the Mountaineer Gym in Baumholder in June 2019, added Washington. Of the seven Army fitness centers within the USAG RheinlandPfalz’s footprint, three more now offer unstaffed PFC access: Rhine Ordnance Barracks, Kleber Kaserne, and Sembach. Washington said that, since 2019, almost 14,000 passes have been processed. “Our night owls and shift workers are the ones who benefit the most from being able to access the gyms after hours,” he said. While some people prefer to work out in the evenings or early mornings to avoid large crowds during the busier daytime or afternoon hours, others have work schedules that make it virtually impossible for them to work out during traditional gym hours. Police officers, firefighters, medical professionals, and retail employees represent a few of the occupations that frequently operate on

Kirk Lambiotte, an information technology specialist with the 102d Signal Battalion, 2d Signal Brigade, finds time to exercise at the Mountaineer Gym in Baumholder, Dec. 1. rotating shift schedules. Because of time constraints (before or after their shift) some might try to rush through a workout, increasing their risk of getting injured. Having 24/7 PFC access provides them with a safe environment to relieve the stress from their jobs while accommodating their own lifestyle. Kirk Lambiotte, information technology specialist for the 102d Signal Battalion, 2d Signal Brigade in Baumholder, said that having a gym that offers extended hours gives him and his wife the opportunity to spend some quality time together. “We love to work out together, but with both of us having day shifts and working at different locations, we never get the chance to do that during regular gym hours,” said Lambiotte. “Now we have the option to exercise together either in the evening or on weekends, and that is great!” All current authorized patrons over the age of 18 (or 17 if Active Duty) can be granted access to PFCs during unstaffed hours. Personnel need to register their Common Access Card/ID card through the front office of the fitness center of choice, and then sign a Statement of Understanding, Release of Liability, Assumption of Risk Form, and receive a brief orientation on safety policies and procedures. Violation of the signed agreement could result in the loss of 24/7 access privileges and subject the patron to further discipline. Younger patrons (12 and older) can also use the facilities as long as they are always accompanied by their parents and after receiving the safety orientation. Because the PFC does not provide supervision or assistance on using the facilities and equipment after normal hours, patrons are expected to conduct themselves responsibly and to assess potential risks before engaging in any activity that could cause personal injury. “To date, the feedback we received from patrons concerning 24/7 access has been mostly positive,” said Washington. “They love it!” He highlighted that the primary challenge lies in ensuring the smooth operation of the necessary automation systems. “I must applaud our IT team; they have been on it!” Washington said. “Ensuring the smooth functioning of automation systems require careful attention and proactive management. We have been lucky to have a well-trained team dedicated to making sure our patrons are taken care of.”

DAF leaders emphasize adapting AI for warfighting success by Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall made it clear that the Air Force and Space Force are fully committed — and pushing hard — to develop and deploy artificial intelligence as a key element in meeting security challenges posed by China and other adversaries Dec. 2. Kendall’s remarks were not new, but by voicing them during a session at the influential Reagan National Defense Forum, he added additional weight to the Department of the Air Force’s efforts to use AI as part of a larger

Secretary of the Air Force Frank Kendall

push to modernize. “I care a lot about civil society and the law of armed conflict,” Kendall said. “Our policies are written around those laws. You don’t enforce laws against machines, you enforce them against people. Our challenge is not to limit what we can do with AI but to find how to hold people accountable for what the AI does. The way we should approach is to figure out how to apply the laws of armed conflict to the applications of AI. Who do we hold responsible for the performance of that AI and what do we require institutions to do before we field these kinds of capabilities and use them operationally.” Kendall pointed out that China and other adversaries are aggressively using AI, and while the U.S. maintains an edge, it is shrinking. Kendall’s comments dovetailed with those from Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Allvin, who said at a separate session during the conference that the Air Force must modernize to properly meet the security threats of today. Part of that effort, Allvin said, is diligently working to integrate AI and machine learning into new capabilities that mesh seamless-

ly with mission needs and proven technologies, while understanding performance tradeoffs. “I do believe the future is going to be about human-machine teaming,” Allvin said. “Optimizing the performance and being able to operate at speed. That investment in our collaborative combat aircraft program is what is going to get us there.” Speed and automation of AI systems have vastly shortened decision timelines. That’s why the DoD’s National Defense Strategy focuses on accelerating decision making and the way information is analyzed and shared. “We are leveraging algorithms and starting with data fusion and being able to gain insights,” Allvin said. “The changing character of war is speed. If we are going to be privileging speed and have massive amounts of data, the ability to have algorithms and the tools that support and let the analysts do what only humans can do which is make that human decision.” “Our job on the government side more than anything else is to thoroughly understand this technology, have the expertise we need to really get into the details

of it and appreciate how it really works,” Kendall said. “To be creative about helping industry find new applications for that technology and developing ways to evaluate it get the confidence we’re going to need to ensure that it can be used ethically and reliably when it is in the hands of our warfighters.” Replacing obsolete, legacy systems by harnessing emerging information, communications, and AI technologies to provide operational targeting and decision support with the speed, adaptability and resilience needed to fight in a highly contested environment is a priority for DAF and falls under Kendall’s Operation Imperatives. “The critical parameter on the battlefield is time,” Kendall said. “The AI will be able to do much more complicated things much more accurately and much faster than human beings can. If the human is in the loop, you will lose. You can have human supervision and watch over what the AI is doing, but if you try to intervene you are going to lose. The difference in how long it takes a person to do something and how long it takes the AI to do something is the key difference.”

Rapid AI development requires DAF to be agile and adaptable in its approach, focusing on rapid testing, experimentation and deployment. The Department of Defense continues to maintain a robust regulatory and ethical framework to ensure the responsible use of AI in defense. Both men stressed the importance of innovation. Allvin said that innovation is a critical element of modernization and is necessary for maintaining readiness. “War is a human thing and the ability to leverage technology with human innovation is something we can never walk away from as we’re continuing to develop and more sophisticated systems,” Allvin said. The Reagan National Defense Forum, celebrating “10 Years of Promoting Peace Through Strength,” brings together leaders from across the political spectrum and key stakeholders in the defense community, including members of Congress, current and former presidential administration officials, senior military leadership, industry executives, technology innovators and thought leaders. Their mission is to review and assess policies that strengthen America's national defense in the context of the global threat environment.

Soldiers from 2nd Cavalry Regiment, with support from other U.S. units and the host nation’s military, achieved rapid deployment to the training area and conducted live-fire scenarios with Stryker armored vehicles Dec. 1-10, at Krivolak Training Area, North Macedonia. The Army of the Republic of North Macedonia hosted Brave Partner, while U.S. Army Europe and Africa led the “short notice action planning” exercise to reinforce military readiness and interoperability in a realistic training environment and to ensure U.S. forces are ready to respond quickly to support stability in the Balkans. “The most important thing is the demonstration of the relationship between the United States and North Macedonia,” said Angela Aggeler, U.S. Ambassador to North Macedonia. “Exercises like this one, bringing in beautiful equipment like this — state of the art — really demonstrates to both of our countries, and frankly to the

world and our NATO allies, how strong this relationship is, and we are there to support each other.” The ambassador visited KTA, meeting with the Minister of Defense of the Republic of North Macedonia, Slavjanka Petrovska, and general officers from both nations’ armies to observe Brave Partner live-fire training on Dec. 7. However, before live-fire training could take place, 2nd Squadron had to successfully complete expeditionary deployment training. Maj. Luke King, the 2nd Squadron, 2nd Cavalry Regiment operations officer, explained how important it was to exercise the processes of getting the soldiers and equipment to the mission, and then to set the conditions for day and night squad live-fire. “Exercising those systems and validating those processes to make sure that we can deliver combatready troops to the training area, or to whatever mission we have, that was the first part,” said King. “They’ve gone through squad blank iterations and then squad live-fire iterations both day and night. And the goodness there is

that it gives soldiers confidence in their weapons systems.” He explained that the exercise gave company and squad leaders the ability to synchronize fire and maneuver with all their available weapons systems. He then explained the Stryker’s advantages, to include weapons systems that can be mounted to the vehicle. The Stryker has several configurations, including an infantry carrier vehicle with a mounted remotely controlled weapons station capable of mounting a .50 caliber machine gun or a MK19 grenade launcher. They can fire 120 mm mortars from the back of the vehicle instead of setting up mortars from the ground, which King explained is a unique and awesome capability. Soldiers can fire those weapons and search and traverse from inside the vehicle with a screen that provides imagery. “Then, the Dragoon has the 30 mm cannon, which we all love, and then a 7.62 coax as well, so you’re not just limited to that one weapons system,” said King. “Also, all fired from inside the vehicle, protecting the gunner.”

In addition to weapons used with the Strykers, each squad had a variety of weapons they fired while dismounted from their vehicles, including the M240 machine gun and the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon. They used their designated marksman to provide precision fire from a distance with the M110 A1 rifle, and they provided indirect fire with the M320 grenade launchers. King said that 2CR gained in readiness and lethality due to Brave Partner. They’d conducted expeditionary deployments two previous times within the last several months, so they were confident and quick moving into North Macedonia. I can’t emphasize enough how awesome of a training area Krivolak is,” said King. “It was just powerful to feel the full might of every headquarters at echelons above us all the way up to USAREUR-AF align the stars for us to get here so quickly. Whatever we asked for, we got. And we got it in a very rapid fashion, and it’s exactly what we wanted. So, it built a lot of our confidence.” Sgt. Joshua Briggs, a 2CR infantryman and squad leader,

adamantly agreed with King’s praise of KTA and the diverse terrain. “The terrain out here is very difficult to traverse,” said Briggs. “It’s hilly and rocky. It allows for more intense and realistic training, like where these soldiers might operate in the future.” Briggs said wet and muddy conditions give soldiers a chance to train while it’s more difficult to keep steady footing, or to avoid the weapons’ exposure to the elements. The training value is higher because they can still effectively prepare and solve objectives in such conditions, simulating actual combat. Another 2CR soldier, Pfc. Alexander Dudzenski, said Brave Partner was his first live-fire exercise. He enjoyed training despite the harsh environment and weather, learning something new with every range iteration and seeing the host nation soldiers build a working relationship with U.S. soldiers. “I never thought in my life that I’d be able to come and see these countries,” said Dudzenski. “I think it’s cooler to do it somewhere I’ve never been before, and

seeing people from different militaries watching us, I find fascinating.” Briggs agreed, saying it’s always a privilege to work with NATO partners, especially when it’s the first time for him in a country, where his squad can share new ideas to refine and improve their craft. “Host nation soldiers have been extremely polite and helpful,” Briggs said. “They’ll ask us questions. It allows us to explain our profession as well as our craft and take pride in our work and see how other people see it.” King agreed that 2CR learned much from working with the host nation. “The Army of the Republic of North Macedonia has been very accommodating,” said King. “Understanding how they conduct training and telling them how we conduct our own training in preparation for their army to receive their Strykers has been very useful because we also learn from them. Some of the questions they ask force us to be a bit more introspective. We’re not only helping them, but we’re helping ourselves too.”

Women’s Bazaar brings together AB 201, local community

A U.S. Airman assigned to the 724th Expeditionary Air Base Squadron rides a camel during a Women’s Bazaar at Air Base 201, Niger, Dec. 2. During the event, local nationals offered goods and services such as camel rides to base personnel, whose patronage directly supported the Agadez community.

Story and photos by Tech. Sgt. Rose Gudex 406th Air Expeditionary Wing The 409th Air Expeditionary Group hosted 24 local vendors from the city of Agadez to participate in a Women’s Bazaar on Dec. 2, which generated 7 million Central African Francs ($11,350) in revenue for the local communities. The event drew nearly 250 U.S. base personnel to the Nigerien Armed Forces compound on Air Base 201, where they purchased more than 750 items ranging from hand-woven baskets to tra-

ditional African clothing and hand-carved sculptures. U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Barton Land, 724th Expeditionary Air Base Squadron and installation commander, said the bazaar provided more than just revenue — it gave the joint personnel on AB 201 the opportunity to learn more about the culture of Niger and strengthen ties with the Agadez community. “It helps build a strong relationship between us and the people of Agadez,” Land said. “This initiative is also part of a greater effort to promote Women, Peace, and Security across the continent.”

A local Agadez woman sets up handmade items for sale during a Women’s Bazaar at Air Base 201, Niger, Dec. 2.

The event highlighted the craftsmanship of local women who brought pieces of their heritage to the cultural exchange. Not only did the bazaar enable interactions that many service members may never have experienced, but the funds raised will have a significant economic impact on the communities that make up Agadez. Because trade had been part of the Agadez culture for decades, a decline in tourism that began in 2007 hit local communities hard. AB 201 has hosted about three bazaars a year since it became operational in 2019, helping to revitalize

Hand carved and painted sculptures lay on a table for U.S. personnel to browse during a Women’s Bazaar at Air Base 201, Niger, Dec. 2. The event consisted of 24 female vendors who hand made all the products and sold more than 750 items.

the local economy. What makes this bazaar different is that it was organized and coordinated by the local Women’s Association in Agadez, said U.S. Army Capt. Lindsey Martinez, 437th Civil Affairs Battalion, Alpha Company team leader. “It’s so important to support small local businesses, and especially women-owned businesses because they often get unfairly excluded from the local marketplace,” said Martinez. “With a woman-specific bazaar, we’re able to focus our efforts on the community who needs the most support while still benefiting from beautiful local goods.”

Land said the event was successful due to base volunteers who provided transportation, security and various other kinds of support. Other agencies involved in event planning were the 437th CA Bn, the 409th Expeditionary Security Forces Squadron, the AB 201 Women’s Association and the FAN, among others. Personnel who attended the event said they were grateful for the opportunity to participate in the cultural exchange and proud to support the local community. AB 201 agencies are planning for another bazaar in the future.

Tips for Making Winter Camping Work For You What to bring: Cold weather rated tents, sleeping bags, blankets, cooking gear, first aid kit, sunscreen, water, food, firewood, snacks, all-weather clothing layers, cell phone, and euro cash as plastic is not accepted everywhere.

4. Camping Bostalsee If you live in the KMC or Baumholder area and don’t want to travel far for a winter camping experience, Bostalsee is the perfect campground for you. The site is only a short drive heading north on Autobahn 62 direction Trier. The campground is open year-round with areas for pitching tents, caravan camping, and rustic huts that are excellent for the entire family. Amenities include electrical connections, personal hygiene facilities, trash disposal, and Wi-Fi. Also, it is only a short distance from the Center Parc vacation center with indoor pool, outdoor heated pool, and spa. If you want to partake in winter sports you will have to drive to the Erbeskopf area which is about 25 minutes away. There you can cross-country ski, downhill ski, sled, and snowboard. A full rental facility is available

Dos and Don’ts: • Do have snow chains and emergency kits in your vehicle. 4WD is no match for icy conditions. Also, water and snacks to tide you over in case of a long delay during travel. • Do check your camping equipment especially for wear and tear as well as temperature ratings. • Don’t venture out alone especially when the weather takes a turn for the worse. • Don’t leave your trash for someone else to gather or leave a campfire smoldering throughout the night. • Don’t use a heat source that requires fuel and open flame inside a tent or cabin. Although this might seem like common sense, too many people tend to ignore it when they are desperate to keep warm at night.

Why winter camping? During the winter season, you don’t have to deal with bugs, slugs and a crowded noisy campgrounds with campfire parties keeping you up all night. You can enjoy the peacefulness of your surroundings. Be forewarned, though: if you don’t prepare in advance, it can lead to a miserable experience especially if you’re taking the kids along. If you’re an experienced fair weather camper, you only need to make a few adjustments to your equipment, location, eating and drinking habits, food storage as well as making sure that any electronics will not freeze up and fail during extended exposure to cold weather. One of the best things that I’ve experienced about camping in winter is to wake up early, gear up and enjoy a snowshoe hike, sledding, cross country skiing or any other activity without having to deal with morning traffic jams, parking nightmares and long lines of folks at sights, entrances, etc. The commute back to your campsite on foot just a couple of minutes away, ending the day with a good hot dinner and chilling out by a small fire with friends, has always made for an amazing experience and should be added to your bucket list. Here are four places to put on your winter camping list.

1. Edelweiss Lodge and Resort The Edelweiss Resort campground and cabins are open year-round and make for an affordable winter stay. The campground has a heated bathhouse and guests can store their ski equipment in lockers at the Hausberg Lodge. Campers can use the outdoor hot tub, relax in the sauna or go for a swim at Edelweiss Resort free of charge.

ABC IN KMC: Quality quill Graphic by Alex Oakenman/Shutterstock.com

by Gina Hutchins-Inman 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Are you questioning our quite quizzical title? Or, have you ever queried what it takes to create a quality weekly periodical? We’ll reveal the secret and lift the paper curtain to show you the making of the Kaiserslautern American newspaper. Every Thursday afternoon a rough draft and structure, called Paper Plan, of the next paper is sent to the publisher with the main topics for the following week. Airmen from the 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Office set out to interview individuals on daily operations or special events, shoot photos and films and then write features about their findings, create dynamic photo stories or produce videos. Others might be busy preparing posts for social media, designing graphics, coordinating with two sister wings or discussing relevant questions with higher leadership. Another group of staff might be

handling media queries and a further party keeps close ties with German representatives for community updates. At the same time, U.S. Army counterparts from the 21st Theater Sustainment Command and U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz venture out to report on port operations and exercises around Europe, local happenings or cover other interest items that are forwarded to the editor. Simultaneously the staff at the publishing house AdvantiPro is busy with designing quality layout, collecting private and commercial ads and handling customer sales and quality assurance. The graphics expert stays in close contact with 86th AW Public Affairs and makes recommendations on the layout. All in all, a team of about quinquaginta (Latin for fifty) people has been engaged in providing newsworthy content and an attractive appearance of the paper for almost two quarters of a century.

The first edition of the Kaiserslautern American was printed January 1976 and its predecessor, the bi-monthly magazine “Ram Jet” was published from mid-1955 up until that time. Since then, fifty editions of the paper have been produced each year, equaling 2,350 newspapers with roughly 25,000 features and photo stories for readers to enjoy. 10,0000 copies are printed each week, making this somewhere close to 23.5 million copies in total. The first digital edition went online January 2012. Everything runs together in one small office at the Public Affairs Office, where the editor collects relevant

items such as the Housing Hype, the History Corner or Take Note, and then passes on actual content to the publisher for layout and searches for and writes additional items of interest. By Wednesday a first draft is sent to the editor for initial review and teasers for the cover page are picked. Thursday morn-

ing can be exciting when reviewing the final draft. For example, if a last-minute change of the cover becomes necessary or a layout needs to be re-arranged. When everything is fine tuned and ready to go by noon, the paper is cleared for print and digitally sent to the press in Oggersheim for production and folding, and the digital version is uploaded in the late evening. Our “paper baby” is mature and ready for delivery throughout the KMC in the wee hours of Friday morning for readers such as in Queidersbach or St. Quentin Ring in Kaiserslautern to enjoy. And, the quintessence: Just hours after sending out “ready to press,” and while the printing press rattles and folds the newspapers within 45-60 minutes, the Paper Plan for the following week is forwarded to the publisher, and the fifty busy work-a-bees start the process all over again. In other words, while you’re reading this article, next week’s paper, and the last edition this year, is already in process…
