Mission complete: Aviation Rotation 19-3 concludes

POWIDZ AIR BASE, POLAND U.S. and Polish forces concluded the two-week Aviation Rotation 19-3 at Powidz Air Base, Poland, July 23. The quarterly rotations are bilateral training exercises aimed at enhancing partnership interoperability and joint readiness. More than 80 U.S. Airmen assigned to Ramstein Air Base, and a few Soldiers from the 5th Quartermaster Theater Delivery Company worked together to complete exercise objectives. “For the last two weeks, we have been flying about four or five sorties a day,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Kirby Turbak 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The Air Force Wounded Warrior program provides personalized care, services, and advocacy to ill or injured service members, their caregivers, and families. Some beneficiaries of AFW2 have gone above and beyond to become ambassadors, a title that comes with even more responsibility. Ambassadors for AFW2 take on the challenge of telling others their story of resiliency, stories that aren’t always easy to share. These stories of resiliency aren’t strictly about physical scars, but mental ones as well. See RESILIENCY, Page 6

MISSION from Page 1 ing events included low-level tactical flying, formation flights, combat offloads, air drops, and more.” During operations, personnel participating in the exercise were able to learn and try things for the first time, such as landing on grass. “Grass landing zones aren’t a new thing for pilots per se, but for some of the pilots it may be their first time,” said Quinter. “Something the loadmasters were able to experience was the low-cost low-altitude air drops.”
According to Quinter, all of the training events during the exercise were not completed without a few challenges. “One of the largest challenges we faced was airspace because there were multiple exercises going on in the area,” said Quinter. “The key to completing our objectives was to communicate with the Polish military and other agencies to deconflict when necessary.” By working together to overcome challenges and meet requirements, the bond between Poland and the U.S. continues to grow.

The 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron Fuels Management Flight provides minor maintenance on vehicles to ensure they don’t break down during missions, monthly inspections on the fuel fleet, and weekly inspections on 12 government-owned vehicles. Senior Airman Scott “Scotty” Plante, 86th LRS preventative maintenance technician, went above and beyond those responsibilities. He streamlined the PMT facility and status board system, which eliminated 20 workplace hazards and enabled 100 percent tracking of tools as well as vehicles going in and out of service. “It was a team effort,” said Plante. “I have really good Airmen underneath me. He also maintained operational capability to support Exercise Astral Knight, Exercise Swift Response, and Operation Silver Arrow, despite having 33 percent of the R-11 refueling fleet deployed. “For Scotty to be able to go out and get the R-11s out there, to actually support Air Force One, is impressive,” said Brig. Gen. Mark R. August, 86th Airlift Wing commander. “To say that we are going to provide the same level of support right here at Ramstein Air Base with a reduction in the fuel fleet is due to the efforts of one amazing Airman.” The Airlifter of the Week program recognizes Ramstein Airmen who, through hard work and dedication, make the 86th AW the “World’s Best Wing.”

86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Maintaining an aircraft is not something one person can do on their own. It takes a team of dedicated individuals who are knowledgeable and not afraid to get their hands dirty. The 86th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron is one of those teams, and it’s their job to ensure the aircraft can fly safely. “A flying crew chief is the aircraft mechanic whenever it flies,” said Staff Sgt. Alec Copper, 86th AMXS flying crew chief. “We’re a part of air crew, so in case the plane breaks down in whichever location we’re in, it’s our job to fix it.” Many things can go wrong with a plane, and it’s a flying
crew chief ’s responsibility to diagnose and fix the issues that may occur. If the aircraft were a patient in a hospital, they would be the doctors who work to heal it. It’s not easy and there’s always something new to learn on the job. “We’re consistently learning every single time we fly, about the aircraft and how it works,” Copper said. Staff Sgt. Javier AmayaSanchez, 86th AMXS flying crew chief, said they rarely face the same issue. Depending on the problem, the crew in charge of the C-130J can work long and odd hours. “One of the biggest challenges is the schedule,” said Amaya-Sanchez. “Sometimes, we’re out here working 19+

86th AMXS assistant flying crew chief. “I think we all need a level of passion, as well, for what we do.” “That’s the most important thing, too, is taking pride in this job,” Copper said. Although the flying crew chiefs love what they do, it can take a toll on their personal lives and families. “It’s highly rewarding, but it comes with a huge sacrifice,” said Amaya-Sanchez. Holidays and important dates can be missed, but, despite these challenges, the flying crew chiefs always pull through. Without them, the mission would come to a standstill. The passion and love they put into their aircraft shines each time it flies through the skies.

Page 6 Resiliency from Page 1 According to Brad Britt, AFW2 outreach program manager, ambassadors address everything from cancer to combat wounds. Many of the warriors have no visible wounds, but have been struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder or other internal wounds. By sharing with fellow Airmen, ambassadors encourage others to stay resilient or seek the help they need. “These people are heroes,”
said Britt. “They might be saving a life; they might be saving a family. That’s the impact that these ambassadors have when they sit down and they talk to these groups. They’re letting them know that they’re not alone, that there’s people in blue who are here to help them.” The program brings together active-duty and veteran Airmen to compete in a variety of Paralympic-like sports, including archery, powerlifting, swimming, sitting volleyball, wheelchair basketball and rugby.

POWIDZ AIR BASE, Poland — With aircraft engines roaring, Airmen are pushed by the wind and exhaust as they communicate through hand signals while performing a combat offload at the end of the taxiway. During Aviation Rotation 19-3, a bilateral training exercise to improve joint functions between the U.S. and Polish militaries, members from the 435th Contingency Response Squadron worked to teach combat offload procedures at Powidz Air Base, Poland. “We have two different types of combat offloads,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Dylan Rymer, 435th CRS mobile aerial porter supervisor. “One is the combat offload alpha and the other is the combat offload bravo. Our goal is to show the Polish military how to perform the air transportation functions of these combat offload methods.” While method alpha is as simple as unlocking a single pallet from the aircraft and taking off, allowing the pallet to slide onto the ground, method bravo is a little more challenging.

“Method bravo is where we take a multi-pallet train, pull it off of the plane and set it on barrels,” said Rymer. “We then break down the cargo on the taxiway before cleaning up. This is done in areas we don’t have operational aircraft loaders.” When aircraft loaders are unavailable, other equipment such as forklifts can be used. In Poland, Airmen faced

the challenge of having unfamiliar equipment. “Their forklifts, loaders, and mobile handling equipment are a little bit different than ours,” said U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Kenneth Saunders, 435 CRS mobile aerial porter. “That’s something we had to adjust to when working with them.” However, despite the challenges
faced, personnel were able to successfully complete the offloads, with members of the Polish armed forces having learned something new. “I’ve only been working with cargo here for a year,” said Marcin Zawadski, armed forces of Poland cargo loader. “I’ve worked with the U.S. twice, but this is my first time doing this combat offload and it is very interesting.” According to Saunders, completing the offloads jointly between the U.S. and Poland have become very smooth, partially due to their desire to learn. “Working with the Polish is amazing,” said Saunders. “Their English is really good, so communication goes well. Plus, they’re here ready to work and eager to learn.” With skills on both sides being tested and improved upon, personnel are grateful for the opportunity to work together. “I like working together with the U.S. because I always learn something new,” said Zawadzki. “It’s a nice experience and a lot of fun.” Aviation Rotations in Poland happen quarterly to continue to build on past iterations of the exercise and create a stronger partnership between the U.S. and Polish forces.

Landstuhl Fitness Center and Baumholder’s Mountaineer Fitness Center now offer 24/7 service to local Department of Defense ID cardholders. “People have spoken — there is a demand for this,” said Daniel
Washington III, chief of Fitness, Athletics and Aquatics for the Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation. “Typically, when we have a large push for something, we’re going to try to cater to those needs.” These two centers were selected for 24/7 access based on the surrounding clientele, Washington explained. Shift workers at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and special units at Baumholder have limited access to indoor training areas that are open outside of regular duty hours. “This supports mission readiness,” Washington said. “When you think

about the demands that our activeduty members face, their mission is not about aesthetic physique — it’s more about being physically fit — so we’re helping them stay fit and prepared for whatever obstacles and challenges they may face.” There are seven fitness centers, two intramural fitness programs and an aquatics center that belong to the garrison. Due to the large cost factor involved with installing video surveillance systems, fail safe doors, nonentry points and all other measures that go into opening a facility for 24/7 access, it hinders how much the garrison can open to the public, Washington explained. “We had to strategically identify two sites to use as pilots for Rheinland-Pfalz, but we’re not saying it’ll be limited in the future to only those two sites,” he said. Community members may register for 24/7 access to Landstuhl and Mountaineer fitness centers at any USAG RP fitness center during business hours. Once registered, they will be able to scan their ID cards to gain entry to the facilities after-hours. “We advise and highly recommend that patrons use the buddy system after-hours,” Washington said. “That way they’re not working out by themselves in the event that something were to happen.” In case there is an emergency situation, the gym has posted signage with emergency contact numbers for the Directorate of Emergency Services and the Directorate of Public Works

Army Capt. Adam Szabat, inpatient pharmacy chief at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, said the unmanned hours will benefit the inpatient pharmacy staff due to running a 24/7 operation. “The new hours allow for increased flexibility for staff who prefer to work out after their shift,” said Szabat, who uses Landstuhl Fitness Center as his primary workout location. “Previously if you worked the weekend shift, the fitness center was not open at the time the shift started and was closed when the shift ended. The new hours will boost morale by allowing staff to maintain their fitness level no matter what shift they’re covering.” The extended access is also in line with what people may be used to coming from the States, where 24/7 gyms with unlimited access have become increasingly common. “Just being able to provide that extra service of 24/7 access is going to give people a closer feel of home while they’re abroad here in Germany,” Washington concluded.

The 19th medieval market at Freisen takes place Aug. 2 to 4. The event is one of the largest medieval events in Germany. The Nature Wild Park Freisen team will go about 1,000 years back in time and present all eras of the Middle Ages on a fest area of about 90,000 square meters. A medieval town made of approximately 600 tents will be set up to house more than 1,900 actors. There will be more than 130 groups including Vikings, Celts and Normans demonstrating life in the Middle Ages. More than 100 vendors and craftsmen’s stands can be found in the main market area, where visitors can watch how things were made in former times. VISIT BURG TRIFELS & TEUFELSTISCH

Two fabulous places that can easily be visited from K-town are Burg Trifels and Teufelstisch a perfect way to spend the day with visiting guests or family and driving there through the Pfälzer Wald is half the fun!
curves. Some of these curves do not have a guard rail, so it is important to constantly keep your eye on the road. If you wish, stop off at the Hotel/ Restaurant Johanniskreuz for lunch, refreshments, or ice cream along the way. They have a nice beer garden for those warm summer days.
The Pfälzer Wald Driving to Burg Trifels and the Teufelstisch takes you directly through the famous Palatinate Forest – The Pfälzer Wald. This area has been designated as the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Palatinate Forest-Vosges du Nord (when joined with the latter low mountain range in northern France, just across the German-French border). That’s right! Residents of the KMC are living next to one of the biggest forests in Europe! The most beautiful route I found goes right through the middle of the Pfälzer Wald and starts just east of Ktown. Driving east on A6 from Ramstein, take the Enkenbach-Alsenborn exit, and go south on B48. As soon as you get off the Autobahn, you are in the Pfälzer Wald. If you live south of K-town around Trippstadt, you are living in the Pfälzer Wald! From here, navigate your way through the back roads and pick up the B48 in Johanniskreuz, and go south from here. This stretch takes you directly through a beautiful, heavily forested area. On a warm day, you will see convertibles with the top down competing for the fresh air and motorcycles abound, partially for the scenery but also for the sport of taking the hairpin
Burg Trifels If you want a GPS assist, dial in Annweiler as your destination. Burg Trifels is adjacent to this town. As you approach Annweiler, you will exit B48 and get on B10 going east towards Landau. You will pass through the Stauffer Tunnel which is a nice treat for the kids. Once you get in the area around Annweiler, there are signs everywhere to Burg Trifels, Trifelsstraße 72, 76855 Annweiler am Trifels. In English, it is Trifels Castle, dating from the Middle Ages and located on the 1,600 foot peak known as Sonnenberg (meaning Sun Mountain in German). Sonnenberg is made up of the red sandstone typical of the Pfälzer Wald. From the castle you can enjoy beautiful panoramas of the Pfälzer Wald and take a look at some of the imperial regalia from the Holy Roman Empire that are on display. There are numerous hiking trails around the castle. The story for which the castle is most famous involves the imprisonment of King Richard I, also known as Richard the Lionhearted, who was captured near Vienna in December 1192 by Duke Leopold V of Austria. King Richard was on his way home from the Third Crusade at the time of his capture. Duke Leopold turned King Richard over to Emperor Henry VI of

This is a local restaurant with a beer garden, play area for kids, offers disabled access and a terrace for warm sunny days. Teufelstisch Teufelstisch is a natural wonder located 20 KM west of Burg Trifels, a pretty 20 minute drive west on B10 in the direction of Pirmasens. It is next to the town Hinterweidenthal (put this into your GPS). The Teufelstisch is a well known
landmark of the German state of Rheinland-Pfalz (or Rhineland-Palatinate in English) which has been depicted on German coins and stamps. It looks like a one-legged, mushroom-shaped table, is about 45 feet high, and made of the characteristic red sandstone of the Palatinate Forest. It is an easy hike to the Teufelstisch (mostly with steps), and well-marked. There are numerous possibilities for climbers and hikers here, and there is also an Erlebnispark Teufelstisch which opened in 2009 and offers a giant slide, a rock pond, a maze that leads to a clock tower, and a cable car perfect for the kids. And, best of all, there is no entry fee to hike to the Teufelstisch or to play in the park. However, you might have to pay a parking fee of 2 euro. There is a restaurant on the premises.
