Three consecutive generations of U.S. Air Forces in Europe commanders and the U.S. Africa Command deputy commander took to the stage as Gen. Frank Gorenc assumed command of USAFE, U.S. Air Forces Africa and Allied Air Command during a ceremony Aug. 2 on Ramstein. The Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark A. Welsh III, voiced his conﬁdence in the new commander, lauding his previous accomplishments. “He earned the privilege of attending the Air Force Academy and was recognized at every stop as the very best at what he did,” said Welsh. “He is made of 100 percent pure leadership, and there is no one better for this job.” Welsh and Gorenc worked together on Ramstein a little more than a year ago when Welsh was the USAFE commander and Gorenc commanded 3rd Air Force. In closing, Welsh gave Gorenc one task regarding his new Airmen. “Frank, I only have one tasker for you,” said Welsh. “Take a look around this hangar at the Airmen of USAFE and AFAFRICA ... your Airmen. Diversity is critical for mission success

COMMENTARY

Zapata 86th Communications Squadron commander Slightly more than a decade ago, our Air Force senior leadership, recognizing a lack of diversity in the Air Force officer corps, began an effort to improve diversity. The objective of these efforts was to make a more diverse and effective leadership body and to grow enough minorities with core operational backgrounds to serve in future senior leadership positions. Our visionary leaders realized our force make up should be a reflection of society. Historically, our Air Force had previous experience in diversity and the remarkable results of inclusion when the Tuskegee Airmen set out to prove that African-Americans could fly military aircraft just as skillfully as white Americans. Tuskegee Airmen proudly succeeded and served the Air Force in virtually every role—from pilots, bombardiers and navigators to meteorologists, intelligence officers, aircraft maintainers and flight surgeons. They certainly proved the point with a record of combat success that needs no further description: 926 African-American pilots earned their wings between 1942 and 1946. Almost 500 of that group saw combat during World War II. Between 1943 and 1945, the Tuskegee Airmen logged 15,533 sorties. They destroyed or damaged

409 enemy aircraft and countless fuel and ammo dumps. In recognition of their sacrifice and success, they were awarded 744 Air Medals, 150 Distinguished Flying Crosses, and three distinguished unit citations in WWII. A discussion of diversity often focuses on race, which I believe is only one aspect. A truly diverse force is essential to our mission success and extends well beyond racial boundaries. I believe it is important to maintain an environment that is open to all, including those who don’t necessarily look and think like me. Within our unit, I stress a couple of points to all our Airmen. These are beliefs I have developed over the course of my career and feel are vital to our success. First, we must have a culture of inclusion that allows anyone the opportunity to suggest a better way. In fact, I ask our Airmen to seek better ways to do our business, which is going to be even more important in the days ahead as we conduct operations in a fiscally constrained environment. I also stress that we value what EVERYONE has to say because you never know where the next great idea will originate. A diverse team will always have a tremendous impact on our way ahead. Now to get these ideas and improvements we need a team that, in addition to racial diversity, also includes men and women equally … AND those who don’t necessarily share the same

thoughts and beliefs. Diversity in gender is critical … diversity in thought is critical … this inclusion is so important to ensuring we see all sides of an issue and have considered all options. It is an all-toocommon mistake to organize your team and surround yourself with people who look and think like you. In fact, there is an old saying that if two people are in business and they agree on everything, one of them isn’t needed. I don’t ever want to fall victim to that way of thinking and limit the possibilities for our Airmen or our Air Force. As our Air Force continues to evolve, and we reap the benefits of past efforts to broaden access and opportunity for all, we also see continued efforts to improve diversity. The inclusion of women in combat is one area that has been a recent focus. This effort will strengthen our efforts in air, space and cyberspace. Fortunately our leaders have learned from the past success stories, such as the Tuskegee Airmen, and are plotting us on a course for continued success. As we look to our future as a nation, it is important for us to continue to blaze new trails of opportunity for ALL people. If indeed our diversity is what makes us stronger, which history has shown it does, then we must continue to embrace it as a strength and foundation for our mission success. These efforts aimed at achieving diversity are not just for diversity’s sake … but for America’s sake.

each vehicle is valued at $1.3 million. The fighting vehicles are coming from combat units including the 173rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Airborne) and the inactivated 172nd Infantry Brigade. From KAD, the Bradleys are transported by rail or truck to Bremerhaven, Germany, for shipment by boat back to the U.S. Upon arrival in Texas, each vehicle will be assessed and refitted, said Jürgen E. Phillips, the Supply Activity Europe operations specialist and a native of Pirmasens, Germany. “The vehicles will go through retrograde at the depot in Texas and be refitted with the newest equipment,” said Phillips. “Once the update is complete, the vehicles will be reassigned to other units in the Army that need them. By updating and reassigning these vehicles instead of buying new ones, the Army is saving money.” Before the fighting vehicles can be shipped, each one goes through a preparation process. First, the vehicles are stripped of plate armor, weapons, mechanical components and the engine is removed. All pieces removed from the Bradleys are then meticulously cleaned, said Martin Geib, a heavy equipment maintenance supervisor with MAK. The entire vehicle is then drained of oil, fuel and any other fluids before finally going through a thorough cleaning at the TLSC-E wash rack. “Every one of these vehicles is completely broken down and drained of fluid, if we don’t do that then they cannot be shipped,” said Geib. “When it leaves the Depot it is as clean as possible and ready for retrograde.” Each of the 66 remaining Bradley Fighting Vehicles will go through the same process in the coming months. “Each vehicle is handled professionally and efficiently, but it is still a long process,” Phillips said. “We are hoping to send the last of these vehicles back to the states by the end of this year or early next year.” AdvantiPro Editor Sales Team

Town hall meeting discusses force reshaping programs by Airman 1st Class Jordan Castelan 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Airmen were informed of force management reshaping options during a town hall meeting here July 31. A general explanation of the voluntary force management program and the temporary early retirement authority program was discussed. The programs reduce overmanned career fields after an 18-year high in retention rates. “These force management tools have been created to meet congressionally mandated end strengths,” said Capt. Scott Simoneaux, 786th Force Support Squadron Military Personnel Flight commander. Retention rates of service members are high, said Simoneaux. The expected separation percentage of service members has declined, and creates a situation where incentives are now being offered to bring the Air Force closer to reach end strength goals. “The temporary early retirement

Breedlove closed his remarks by emphasizing the need to maintain and improve partnerships with our allies and improve crisis response capability around the world with smaller, more capable, quick reaction forces. “This command — your command, Frank — stands shoulder to shoulder with our allied and partner nations across Europe, ensuring our collective freedom,” he said. However, the responsibility of the new USAFE-AFAFRICA commander does not stop at the borders of Europe. “The men and women of U.S. Air Forces Africa are an integral part of the Africa Command strategy and their contributions are a major factor in our success,” said Marine Lt. Gen. Steven A. Hummer, U.S. Africa Command deputy to the commander for military operations. “Our Africa partners’ air forces are better today because of the training and mentoring provided by the men and women of Air Forces Africa,” he said. About half way through the ceremony, Gorenc accepted the flags for USAFE, AFAFRICA and the Allied Air Command, symbolically assuming command. As the new commander of USAFEAFAFRICA, Gorenc is responsible for a fullspectrum of Air Force war-fighting capabilities in a theater spanning three continents, containing 104 independent states possessing more than one-fifth of the world’s population and more than a quarter of the world’s gross domestic product. Looking out over more than 700 service members and allied partners, Gorenc addressed the crowd for the first time as the USAFE-AFAFRICA commander. He began by thanking his family for their support. “In 1961, my parents emigrated from Yugoslavia with two small kids, $100, and a vision for success in America,” said Gorenc. “Although they have since passed, their dreams became a reality for me and my brother.” Gorenc and his brother, Stanley, were both born in what is now Slovenia, and his brother is a retired U.S. Air Force major general. “To the men and women of Air Forces in Europe, Africa and NATO, I want you to know this is a huge moment for me,” said Gorenc. “From humble beginnings to four-star command, I am grateful to a country that gave me every opportunity to succeed.” Gorenc also had a few additional words to say to the Airmen working under his command. “Operating with integrity, prioritizing service before self, and committing to excellence, Airmen will power the Air Force to ‘World’s Greatest’ status regardless of the challenges of the day,” he said. “History validates my view because I have personally observed throughout my 34-year career that when the going gets tough, our Airmen get going.” As Gorenc took command of USAFE, AFAFRICA and Allied Air Command, he said, “To command is an honor and a privilege, but to command here is simply a dream come true.”

Effective Oct. 1, SNCO Academy Course 00014, Version 6 will be released on a new learning management system, Blackboard. The new course features new lessons and updated interactive content. Hagel announces reduction in civilian furlough days American Forces Press Service WASHINGTON — Hundreds of thousands of Defense Department civilian employees who have had to take a weekly unpaid day off from work since July 8 are getting some relief, as the total number of furlough days has been reduced from 11 to six, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced Tuesday. Here is the complete text of the secretary’s announcement: When I announced my decision on May 14 to impose furloughs of up to 11 days on civilian employees to help close the budget gap caused by sequestration, I also said we would do everything possible to find the money to reduce furlough days for our people. With the end of the fiscal year next month, managers across the DoD are making final decisions necessary to ensure we make the $37 billion spending cuts mandated by sequestration, while also doing everything possible to limit damage to military readiness and our workforce. We are joined in this regard by managers in non-defense agencies who are also working to accommodate sequestration cuts while minimizing mission damage. As part of that effort at the Department of Defense, I am announcing today that, thanks to the DoD’s efforts to identify savings and help from Congress, we will reduce the total numbers of furlough days for DoD civilian employees from 11 to six. When sequestration took effect on March 1, DoD faced shortfalls of more than $30 billion in its budget for day-to-day operating costs because of sequestration and problems with wartime funding. At that point we faced the very real possibility of unpaid furloughs

for civilian employees of up to 22 days. As early as January, DoD leaders began making painful and far reaching changes to close this shortfall: civilian hiring freezes, layoffs of temporary workers, significant cuts in facilities maintenance, and more. We also sharply cut training and maintenance. The Air Force stopped flying in many squadrons, the Navy kept ships in port, and the Army cancelled training events. These actions have seriously reduced military readiness. By early May, even after taking these steps, we still faced day-to-day budgetary shortfalls of $11 billion. At that point I decided that cutting any deeper into training and maintenance would jeopardize our core readiness mission and national security, which is why I announced furloughs of 11 days. Hoping to be able to reduce furloughs, we submitted a large reprogramming proposal to Congress in May, asking them to let us move funds from acquisition accounts into day-to-day operating accounts. Congress approved most of this request in late July, and we are working with them to meet remaining needs. We are also experiencing less than expected costs in some areas, such as transportation of equipment out of Afghanistan. Where necessary, we have taken aggressive action to transfer funds among services and agencies. And the furloughs have saved us money. As a result of these management initiatives, reduced costs, and reprogramming from Congress, we have determined that we can make some improvements in training and readiness and still meet the sequestration cuts. The Air Force has begun flying

again in key squadrons, the Army has increased funding for organizational training at selected units, and the Navy has restarted some maintenance and ordered deployments that otherwise would not have happened. While we are still depending on furlough savings, we will be able to make up our budgetary shortfall in this fiscal year with fewer furlough days than initially announced. This has been one of the most volatile and uncertain budget cycles the Department of Defense has ever experienced. Our fiscal planning has been conducted under a cloud of uncertainty with the imposition of sequestration and changing rules as Congress made adjustments to our spending authorities. As we look ahead to fiscal year 2014, less than two months away, the Department of Defense still faces major fiscal challenges. If Congress does not change the Budget Control Act, DoD will be forced to cut an additional $52 billion in FY 2014, starting on October 1. This represents 40 percent more than this year’s sequester-mandated cuts of $37 billion. Facing this uncertainty, I cannot be sure what will happen next year, but I want to assure our civilian employees that we will do everything possible to avoid more furloughs. I want to thank our civilian workers for their patience and dedication during these extraordinarily tough times, and for their continued service and devotion to our department and our country. I know how difficult this has been for all of you and your families. Your contribution to national security is invaluable, and I look forward to one day putting this difficult period behind us. ERMC welcomes new command team

Every experience in life has made you who you are today. In competitions, most of the time, people lose. There is normally only one winner. This next generation seems to feel entitled to something. I played team sports throughout my life and never got an eighth-place trophy. I would lose all the time, and my dad taught me to shake the hand of the team that beat me and congratulate them for being better than me on that day. Similarly, everyone feels as though they deserve a five on their enlisted performance report, a quarterly award or a medal. But it must be earned. Teach those who work for you how to earn what they feel entitled to; this can be as easy as showing them respect for their service. Just as we walk differently around a chief than we walk around an airman 1st class. The trick is to respect all the Airmen who work for you. Find out their story. Do what you can to train them as your replacement while learning and gaining the respect of your supervision, peers and subordinates. What is your end goal? If you are not making others better, you need to go … your milk has expired! We have all been around expired milk, and yes, it always seems to happen when you’re at your thirstiest. You know the drill, it’s hot; you’ve been working hard all day and the milk carton (potential leadership) is visible. You reach for it in hopes that it will reach for you. You pour it into a glass of hope and BAMM — It’s spoiled! Everyone joined the same Air Force, and we all had the same type of recruiter and instructors in basic training. We all knew if we messed up, there would be consequences. Please call the baby ugly; we are all tired of self-glorification and inflated stats. Be direct with people; tell them if you are not happy with a product or production. Tell them to own their product and stand next to them. Show your solidarity with them and your unit. If you are worried about being the bad guy, grow up. Lead by example, be on top of your game, and do not let your milk spoil. Get out there while showing and teaching what you know. Those who are around you are your replacements. They are the ones that will be filling in when you have turned in your stripes. Get them to the point to where they can do your job better than you. Some “leaders” might think they will lose their job if they give their subordinates the tools to perform better, to be better leaders and make better managers, but the reality is, we just rent our stripes and position … we truly never own our rank. It’s just lent to us for a while until we pass it on to the next Airman after us.

Collins will serve as interim ERMC commander/ U.S. Army Europe command surgeon until a new commanding general is named, according to Army Surgeon General/MEDCOM Commander, Lt. Gen. Patricia D. Horoho who presided at the relinquishment of command ceremony. “I’m excited about the opportunity and confident that we’ll continue to do great things,” said Collins. “The command teams and Soldiers belonging to Army Medicine in Europe are the best group of professionals I have served with in almost 30 years of service.” Collins served as the ERMC chief of staff since August 2011. Previously in his career, he deployed with the 62nd Medical Brigade to Afghanistan and also served as commander of Winn Army Community Hospital at Fort Stewart, Ga. During a past assignment to Germany, he served as chief of staff at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. During the ceremonial transfer of command, Horoho passed the guidon to Collins who then presented it to Command Sgt. Maj. Ly Lac, symbolizing Lac’s assumption of responsibility as the new ERMC command sergeant major. Lac has served in the Army for more than 26 years, most recently as command sergeant major at U.S. Army Medical Activity Fort Carson, Colo. Lac has served in a variety of leadership and staff posi-

tions including senior enlisted advisor to the commanding general of Warrior Transition Command in Washington D.C. He is an experienced Army medic and has earned the Combat Medical Badge, Expert Field Medical Badge, and U.S. Army Staff Identification Badge. Clark, the outgoing ERMC commander, will move on to Bethesda, Md., where he will take command of Walter Reed National Medical Military Medical Center. During the ceremony, he bid a fond farewell to the Army Medicine in Europe team, having served with them since May of 2012. “Commanding this regional medical command and serving with our Army Medicine in Europe team has been a very special privilege,” said Clark. “Sue and I thank you for all you do and for the privilege and honor to have served with you. All in Army Medicine should be very proud of who you are, what you do, and most importantly, how you do it.” ERMC is responsible for a healthcare system with approximately 5,500 joint-service personnel dedicated to providing high quality healthcare to more than 217,000 eligible beneficiaries including approximately 36,000 active duty members from all services across Europe. ERMC operates a medical center and 15 Military Treatment Facilities in Germany, Belgium and Italy. The 86th Maintenance Squadron nondestructive inspection lab is in many ways similar to the services provided by a medical lab. They both use high-tech equipment to see things invisible to the naked eye and aid in preventive maintenance. Their goal is to keep the mission essentials healthy and in the fight. The 86th MXS NDI lab is one of the most integral parts of the fabrication flight. The fabrication flight, as a team, is responsible for the detection and repair of any service or maintenance induced cracks and damage for all aircraft, aircraft subsystems and ground support equipment. The NDI lab ensures aircraft and related equipment are “Fit to Fight.” “The detection and repair can be a daily struggle with today’s aging fleet and equipment,” said Tech. Sgt. Jeremy Cole, 86th MXS nondestructive inspection technician. “Ramstein, however, is lucky to have newer C-130J Super Hercules models, which have not accumulated the high flight hours of many other Air Force aircraft.” Like X-ray examinations, preventive maintenance measure magnetic particle, and penetrant inspections determine if our planes are ready for takeoff. The first step for an X-ray examination is to process the film. Using an

automatic film processor, the image is developed, fixed, washed and dried, making it ready for viewing. Much like a medical X-ray examining bone fractures, NDI x-rays aircraft structures to pinpoint cracks in critical structures. Fluorescent magnetic particle bath sprays tiny fluorescent magnetic particles over suspected damaged parts, preparing it for inspection. During magnetic particle inspection, specific parts are checked for structural integrity. When confirmed that no cracks exist, the part can be placed into service. The penetrant inspection process uses an emulsifying bath, which removes traces of excess penetrant, allowing crack indications to be more visible. Any penetrant that seeps into the cracks will be visible due to its natural fluorescence under a black light. Using a series of NDI inspections, it is possible to extend an aircraft’s life another 50 to 60 years, saving the Air Force money and saving lives. “Any defect that goes undetected can potentially cause a catastrophic failure,” said Tech. Sgt. Michael Brandon, 86th MXS nondestructive inspection craftsman. “It would not be safe for planes to fly if we didn’t perform certain inspections.” The NDI lab keeps aircraft in the air with constant checkups and preventive measures to reduce the chance of an aircraft being totally grounded, keeping our fleet and Airmen in good health.

Wright Jr. 21st TSC Public Affairs MIHAIL KOGALNICEANU, Romania — Using a process called multi-modal transportation, the 21st Theater Sustainment Command oversaw and coordinated the movement of equipment in more than 200 TRICON type containers from their home station in Vilseck, Germany, to their unit, the 2nd Cavalry Regiment, in Afghanistan, beginning June 21 and spanning the course of 28 days. Multi-modal transportation is a process that “uses different modes of transportation to move cargo and personnel from one point to another,” said Chief Warrant Officer 3 Sean Lockwood, the multi-modal officer in charge for the 21st TSC and a native of Bronx, N.Y. Forward positioned as a hub in Europe, the 21st uses multi-modal logistics to transit equipment rapidly and efficiently between the U.S., Europe, Africa and Central Command AORs. In the past, units moving equipment in and out of the U.S. Central Command area of operations moved equipment solely by boat or plane, which often inflates cost and increases time of transit. By analyzing routes and costs, the 21st TSC uses its central location to move equipment over a combination of land, sea or air to its final destination. The 21st TSC made the multi-modal process possible by moving and tracking all equipment from Germany into Romania by way of train. Soldiers from the 21st TSC also ensured the equipment cleared customs, that contracts were in order and all documentation for movement was available so all personnel and equipment could fly into Afghanistan. “Most of it is general cargo and supplies that the Soldiers will need while downrange,” said Sgt. Sheryl Willson, the 2 CR’s regimental transportation noncommissioned officer in charge and a native of Maui, Hawaii. “Within three weeks, we’ve already pushed out more than 90 percent of the containers, and the Soldiers in the fight are getting the equipment they need.” The successful movement of the more than one million pounds of equipment was a result of the teamwork and synchronization of the 21st TSC, 2 CR, the 16th Sustainment Brigade, and the Air Force’s 435th Contingency Response Group. “There are quite a few units that have to come

together every day and interact with each other to make this work,” said 1st Lt. Andrew Miller, a movement control officer with the 627th Movement Control Team, 16th Sustainment Brigade, and a native of Brooklyn Park, Minn. “With this mission, it’s the coordination you have to do with the deploying unit, the host nation, and the local personnel that work at the base; it’s a whole host of personnel that have to come together to make this happen.” The 21st TSC was ultimately responsible for making sure the mission was a success, said Lockwood. “We do all of the synchronization between the Air Force, the deploying unit, the MCT and the pallet builders to make sure everyone comes together and understands what the mission is.” “You need to have the 21st TSC on the ground, because we have the logistical knowledge to get the job done,” said Lockwood. “We have the manpower and the knowhow to recommend to commanders how to get their cargo, equipment and personnel into an area safely and effectively to do their job.” Originating in Vilseck, Germany, the containers were transported to Mihail Kogalniceanu, Romania, on rail cars where they were transported on cargo planes into Kandahar, Afghanistan, over the course of nine trips. The whole process took just over three weeks, allowing the 2 CR Soldiers to become fully

mission capable in Afghanistan in a much shorter time than in the past. “What they were doing at first was everything would leave via Bremerhaven Port, Germany, and it would have to go the long way around the Caspian Sea with a transition time of about 40 days,” said Lockwood. “What we did here is we railed everything, which takes about four days from Germany into [Romania], then we airlifted it straight into Kandahar.” According to Sgt. 1st Class Tamecha Chalmers, the senior movement NCO for the 21st TSC and a native of Hope Mills, N.C., the multi-modal transportation method through Romania not only saves time, but is also a much more cost effective way of ensuring the Soldiers in Afghanistan receive their equipment. “Moving the containers via rail into Romania has saved the 21st TSC a lot of money,” added Chalmers. “Anytime you’re going by land, whether it be rail or truck, it’s much more cost effective.” “It is cheaper to send things via air from [Romania] than having to vessel them from Germany to Afghanistan,” said Willson. “It is more cost effective and, if you weigh the money and time, this is the best place to get the cargo from its point of origin to the Soldiers.”

Expeditionary Skills Inspection Airmen take the prone position while taking cover from simulated attacks during a wing readiness inspection. These inspections provide feedback to the commander on the overall readiness of his or her wing to execute contingency and day-to-day operations.

The Ramstein Library will host a monthly 3-D Model Building event that encourages children to get hands-on experience with science, technology, engineering and math projects and learn more about history. Past events included working with model airplanes and model ships. The next program will feature a replica of a traditional European town, complete with houses, shops, churches and even roundabouts. “This is a great opportunity to show kids that engineering and math-related subjects aren’t boring. In our airplane building event, kids learned about the birthplace of military aviation and heard about great ideas for local summer trips,” said Alison McKee, Ramstein public services librarian. The program is taught by special guests from U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa and 8th Airlift Wing civil engineers, and focuses on encouraging creation and invention, even while on a budget. “This is an opportunity to step back, and with very limited resources, do some really neat things,” said Lt. Col. James Hickman, deputy chief, readiness division, Headquarters USAFEAFAFRICA. If your children are interested in fighting the battle against summer boredom, check out the 3-D Model Village Building from 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at the library conference center. MDG announces limited TRICARE Plus enrollment From the 86th Medical Group The 86th Medical Group is excited to announce limited enrollment for TRICARE Plus eligible beneficiaries. TRICARE Plus is a program that allows beneficiaries who normally are only eligible to get care at a military facility on a space available basis, to enroll at the military facility for primary care. Beneficiaries using the following health plan options may apply for TRICARE Plus: TRICARE Standard Overseas TRICARE for Life Enrollment requirements: • Complete TRICARE Plus enrollment form at the TRICARE Front Desk, Bldg. 2114, on Ramstein. • Provide medical records and health history.

• Screening exam with a provider, may include labs, radiology, or consult before acceptance. • Family members will be empanelled together when possible. TRICARE Plus benefits: • There are no enrollment fees, no associated costs with the primary care you receive at the 86th MDG. • Beneficiaries will be assigned a primary care manager. • Beneficiaries get primary care appointments with the same access standards as TRICARE Prime enrollees • Beneficiaries may still get care from civilian providers. Do everyone a favor: put down the cell by Lt. Col. Jeremy Eldred 86th Airlift Wing Safety office I am sure you have all heard the radio ads on American Forces Network describing the dangers of using cell phones while driving. The 86th Airlift Wing Safety office tracks all the mishap data that occurs in the KMC, and we have discovered a disturbing trend regarding traffic accidents involving distracted driving. During the third quarter of this fiscal year, the KMC experienced over 110 major accidents. A major accident is defined as an accident that causes at least one personal injury or disables at least one of the vehicles involved. According to the National Safety Council more than 80 percent of all traffic accidents involve some type of distracted driving. Of that 80 percent, half of these distractions involve cell phone use. Further, approximately 10 percent of distracted driving involving cell phones resulted in fatalities. If we apply these percentages to the

KMC mishap number, we have had more than 80 accidents that involved distracted driving. Although we had a large number of mishaps involving distracted driving, we thankfully have not experienced a military member or family member fatality, but I believe we have been very lucky. Let’s take at look at distracted driving. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration defines distracted driving as, “any activity that could divert a person’s attention away from the primary task of driving … These types of distractions include: texting, using a cell phone, eating, drinking, talking to passengers, grooming, using a navigation system, or adjusting a radio,” just to name a few. Why is using a cell phone or being distracted a cause for concern? Well, the facts don’t lie. A study conducted at the University of Utah compared driver reaction times while using a cell phone and driving a vehicle while legally intoxicated. The cell phone driving was just as likely to cause an accident as driving drunk, if not more

so. (Now, don’t read into this too far.) Both increased the chance for causing an accident, but the use of a cell phone caused a slower recognition and reaction time which led to more rear-end collisions. The brain is just not made to process more than one complex function at a time. Although you may be able to walk and chew gum at the same time, driving safely and talking on a cell phone is just not possible (unless you are Superman, and I know for a fact that you are not). Thankfully, this study took place in a controlled environment, and only computer pixels were injured. ZOM B I E R U N KMC members ran for their lives and charity, when zombies started appearing near the Southside Fitness Center Aug. 3 on Ramstein. Participants of the 5-kilometer Zombie Run dashed, dodged and darted past volunteers infected by a zombie plague to raise money for the St. Nikolaus Kinderheim in Landstuhl. Runners were 6 years old to 65 years old. The Zombie Run included prizes included prizes for the top 15 finishers and a unique experience for all those that competed and managed to survive the onslaught of zombies converging on and covering the path to victory.

School Notes Meet the new chaplain Chaplain (Capt.) Henry Jenkins is a Protestant chaplain who pastors the Vogelweh Gospel Service and supports personnel of the 86th Airlift Wing and their families with the delivery of ministry to ensure the free exercise of religion. Jenkins is endorsed by the United Methodist Church. As the largest installation in the KMC, Ramsteinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Chaplain Corps extends their service footprint to support surrounding military installations and their families. The services offered include programs for children, teens and adults.

Furlough cancellation

According to Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, effective immediately, furloughs have been cancelled for Department of Defense Education Activity instructional and support staff on 10-month contracts. These members were subject to ďŹ ve days of furloughs in order to ensure a creditable year of schooling for students. Now the teaching year will not be reduced at all.

New student orientation

Ramstein High School will be hosting a new student orientation from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 22. Students will be afforded the opportunity to tour the school, learn important information about the school and even receive a free lunch. by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Saturday, for the 58th time, towns and villages along the Middle Rhine will hold their annual event called “Rhine Aflame.” Every year, this summer fest takes place the second Saturday in August and lures about 500,000 visitors to the banks, and about 40,000 people can watch the spectacle from ships cruising up and down the Rhine River. Between Spay and Koblenz, for a distance of 17 kilometers, there will be illuminations and fireworks displays. At 9:30 p.m., a convoy of about 70 ships will start traveling downstream from Spay to Koblenz. They will pass river banks, romantic framework houses and castles plunged into Bengal lights. Nine fireworks displays will be lit between 9:30 and 11 p.m. from different locations to include Marksburg Castle near Braubach, the

towns of Rhens and Lahnstein and Stolzenfels Palace near Koblenz. The final fireworks display will start at around 11 p.m. from Ehrenbreitstein fortress right across from the “Deutsche Eck,” meaning German corner. This biggest and oldest fireworks display has a long tradition in the garrison town of Koblenz. In 1776, a fireworks display honored Elector Johann Philip von Walderdorff, who lived in Koblenz-Ehrenbreitstein. Light balls, musketeer shoots and air signals were part of the show, which was crowned with 12 cannon shots. The participating towns of Koblenz, Lahnstein, Braubach, Rhens, Brey and Spay will offer entertaining programs including music, dancing, wine fests, water ski performances and guided tours. Medieval fest takes place on Falkenstein Castle by Petra Lessoing Ramstein Public Affairs Falkenstein Castle, located high above Falkenstein village, is one of the most impressive castle ruins in the northern Palatinate region. It will be the stage for a medieval spectacle Saturday and Sunday. The event will feature a knights camp with knights presenting show fights. A medieval market will include craftsmen such as blacksmiths, turners, potters, glass blowers, stonemasons, and painters showing off their craftsmanship arts. Vendors will sell merchandise from the Middle Ages such as clothes, leather items, weapons, jew-

elry, arts and herbs. Musicians will play on historical instruments, and dance groups will perform. Jugglers will entertain the audience, show off their acrobatic skills and present a fire show. Children can listen to fairy tales, try archery and participate in skill games. Fest activities will start at 10 a.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. Sunday. Admission fee is â&#x201A;Ź6 for adults and â&#x201A;Ź2 for children. Visitors in medieval costumes and students pay â&#x201A;Ź4. Children shorter than a sword are admitted free. The two-day ticket is â&#x201A;Ź10. A free shuttle bus will take passengers through the Falkensteiner Valley coming

from direction Winnweiler and Imsbach. Parking spots can be found on the meadows of Wambacher Hof. Falkenstein Castle is north of Imsbach. Senior Airman Caitlin Guinazu 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 86th Operations Support Squadron airfield management flight works around the clock to ensure the airfield is a safe and operational environment. During times of low visibility pilots utilize an airfield landing system. The ALS at Ramstein is the only Category two/three airfield throughout the Department of Defense. These categories allow pilots to land in conditions where they normally wouldn’t be allowed ton and is up to the airfield managers to maintain that system. One of the ways they do that is by validating the ALS is working properly. “All the different signs and lights, they all mean something important,” said Airman Brandon Horning, 86th OSS airfield management operations coordinator. “Inspecting the lights night and day is crucial to the safety of night operations for all aircraft, as well as for those driving on the runways.” Ensuring lighting is in proper working condition is only one of their responsibilities as airfield managers. “While we are out examining the lights we also look for any animals on the flight line,” said Horning. “Boar, deer, rabbits, foxes and birds; they’re a problem for us because that’s a potential danger for an aircraft using the runway.” Not only do they respond to in-flight and ground emergencies for any circumstances that affect flight safety on the airfield, they also coordinate with various agencies, such as the air traffic control, fire department, aircraft maintenance and command post for airfield support. “As airfield managers, we are the focal point for anything and everything happening on that airfield,” said Staff Sgt. Stephanie Heck, airfield management operations NCOIC. “Given the multitude of missions and sorties arriving and departing from Ramstein we need to keep the airfield capable and ready.” Whether it’s inspecting the ALS or scouting for game, the 86th OSS AMOF ensures Ramstein maintains a safe airfield and its aircraft are ready for flight at a moment’s notice.

The sun may set slowly on the horizon symbolizing the end of the day for most, but some Airmen are just getting started. Working around the clock, Airmen from the 86th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron ensure 100 percent readiness of all assigned aircraft. The 86th AMXS is the sole provider of tactical airlift capability within U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa. They assist NATO partners in real world, joint and bilateral training exercises. They also provide humanitarian relief, aeromedical evacuation and tactical combat resupply. “We are charged with the responsibility of maintaining the Air Force’s second most valuable asset ... aircraft,” said Staff Sgt. Christian Wells, 86th AMXS ﬂying crew chief. “We provide airlift support to several surrounding countries, sometimes at a moment’s notice, which wouldn’t be possible if we were not here doing our job.” With an eye for detail, they maintain everything on an aircraft down to the smallest light and screw. “A light bulb provides vision for the aircrew to land safely at night,” said Wells. “But more importantly, changing that light bulb and providing an aircraft that is 100 percent mission capable represents our skill as maintainers and the pride we take in our profession.” Critical to the Air Force mission, the Airmen from the 86th AMXS provide countless capabilities for all to see. “This job is extremely essential in helping the Air Force’s mission in Europe,” said Airman Chase Frazee, 86th AMXS aircraft hydraulic systems specialist. “We maintain our C-130J Super Hercules ﬂeet to their highest potential in order to support missions for USAFE-AFAFRICA.” From sunrise to sunset and many hours after, the Airmen from the 86th AMXS are at work preparing, maintaining and resupplying Ramstein’s aircraft.

The Child, Youth and School Services EDGE! program offers a basketball course every Thursday until Aug. 22. The Ramstein Men’s Varsity Softball team hosted the largest tournament in Europe this weekend. Twenty-one teams, 15 men’s and six women’s teams competed from all over Europe. These teams gathered together to do battle and claim victory for their respective teams. The competition was ﬁerce, but in the end the Ramstein men’s and women’s teams both proved victorious in the tournament.
