US Airman recognized as ‘hero’ in Paris Story and photo by Tech. Sgt. Ryan Crane Headquarters U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa PARIS — U.S. Ambassador to France Jane D. Hartly recognized Airman 1st Class Spencer Stone for his actions in saving countless lives during a terrorist attack aboard a train headed toward Paris Aug. 21. “We often use the word ‘hero,’ and in this case I know that word has never been more appropriate,” Hartley said. “They are truly heroes. When most of us would run away, Spencer, Alek and Anthony ran into the line of fire, saying ‘let’s go.’ Those words changed the fate of many,” she continued. Stone and his two friends, Aleksander Skarlatos and Anthony Sadler, were on vacation and headed to Paris from Amsterdam when an armed man entered their cabin.

(Right to left) Airman 1st Class Spencer Stone, Aleksander Skarlatos and Anthony Sadler pose for a photo Aug. 23 in Paris following a foiled attack on a French train. Stone was on vacation with his childhood friends, Aleksander Skarlatos and Anthony Sadler, when an armed gunman entered their train carrying an assault rifle, a handgun and a box cutter. The three friends, with the help of a British passenger, subdued the gunman after his rifle jammed.

“It wasn’t a conscious decision,” said Skarlatos, an Army National Guard Soldier stationed in Oregon. “We didn’t even have time to think about it. We just acted.” The trio had just spent the

previous three days enjoying Amsterdam on their vacation. They were excited to make it to Paris, so they got up early and made their way to the train station. Their train wasn’t leaving for another

four hours so they killed time buying souvenirs and, according to them, eating the best ice cream they have ever had. They thought their vacation was off to a great start. Their train arrived

and it was time to depart Amsterdam. “We had first class tickets, but we just found a spot we liked somewhere else on the train,” Stone said. “Turns out our wagon didn’t have Wi-Fi, so we decided to use our first class tickets and moved to another wagon.” After about an hour on the train, they were settled somewhere in Belgium. “I was asleep with my headphones on and my friend, Alek, was sitting to the left of me and Anthony was sitting to my right across the aisle,” Stone said. “I wake up and I see Alek moving around saying ‘oh crap! oh crap!’” Skarlatos motioned toward the gunman who entered the cabin brandishing an AK-style assault rifle. “I kinda turn around and see the guy,” Stone said, “and he’s got the AK, he’s trying to charge it. More than 4,500 service members from eight nations arrived at Hohenfels Training Area in Germany Aug. 13 through 24 to participate in Exercise Allied Spirit II. The exercise’s intent was to strengthen the alliance and enhance interoperability with allied partner nations. Countries involved were the U.S., Canada, the Czech Republic,

Georgia, Hungary, Italy, Serbia and the United Kingdom. “Allied Spirit II … is the largest multinational exercise we’ve had here at the Joint Multinational Readiness Center (JMRC) probably within the last 10 years,” said U.S. Army Maj. Kirk Daniels, JMRC planner. Among the masses were four U.S. Air Force tactical air control party Airmen. Assigned to the 2nd Air Support Operations Squadron, these Airmen were tasked to integrate with

Balancing mission focus, busy life

COMMENTARY

by Lt. Col. Barry King 37th Airlift Squadron commander Comprehensive Airman Fitness is a framework for developing resiliency skills throughout the Air Force family. The program recognizes and emphasizes the fact that fitness is more than a physical state; it is as varied and nuanced as the members of the community. CAF is a holistic approach that focuses on strengthening four separate domains, or pillars, of resiliency — mental, physical, social and spiritual. The intent is to create and sustain a resilient force of Airmen, civilians and family members by providing education and resources that fit their needs. One of the strongest merits of CAF is that it

allows people to rely on their innate strengths while encouraging balance and growth in weak areas. This means the resiliency we build is tailored to our needs as individuals. What uplifts me is completely different from another Airman’s perception of inspiration. I find emotional strength in my wife and two children; in times of crisis I turn to my faith and meditation to bolster my spiritual pillar. To highlight the value of a flexible approach to resiliency, Senior Airman Toni Odom offers a different perspective of what CAF means to her. “I jokingly say that I’m married to the Air Force because in many ways I do have a symbiotic relationship with my career. When I moved to Germany though,

U.S. Army units to ensure air and ground superiority during the exercise. “While attached with the Army, our job is to provide close air support guidance to the ground commander and control aircraft onto their targets,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Seth Hunt, 2nd ASOS TACP. Along with providing support to their U.S. partners, the TACPs were also able to learn ways to adjust when working with NATO allies. “It is important working with not only our people, but the foreign nationals as well,” Hunt said. “Everyone does things a little differently, and being able to see how everyone operates helps build the interoperability before we go down range together.” Another benefit brought by conducting exercises like Allied Spirit II is that unit commanders have the opportunity to see how well their personnel react in a controlled war simulation before they have to deploy. “When a TACP commander deploys his people, he may never see or hear from them again until the end, so he never truly knows how his personnel are operating,” said Master Sgt. Jason Tonkinson, 4th Air Support Operations Group scheduling and train-

that statement basically became my motto. Being unmarried, away from my family in Arkansas and not particularly religious, the easiest thing to do was focus on work, volunteer to fly on holidays and avoid the silence of my apartment. This worked for almost two years before I realized that other aspects of my life were falling to the wayside. The effects of burying myself in my career were insidious. I came home after a threeweek mission with a suitcase full of sweaty flight suits and found more piles of laundry, dirty dishes and an overwhelming sense of loneliness. Feeling like I had nobody to call was the cherry on my self-pity sundae. Somehow I was surviving, but I was not thriv-

ing in an environment of my own making. I am in a much better state now that I balance my time at work with a fulfilling social life and a few peaceable games of dodge ball. Happiness is a slow run around my village or bringing macaroni and cheese to a cookout. It is tempting not to kill my potted plants and spending the weekend in Paris. I’ve found that as I take care of myself and my coworkers, everything else falls easily into place.” In the 37th Airlift Squadron, relying on all four pillars is paramount to ongoing mission success. From the newest Airman in the Blue Tail family, to the superintendent or commander, having a solid foundation on which to rely during difficult times is not

ing NCOIC. “However, these exercises provide an honest look into how their troops work, good and bad, through detailed reports, so the commander truly understands where he sits with readiness.” To ensure players put forth their best effort, the simulated war was created as close to the real thing as possible, including an opposing force, mock towns with civilians and lasers mounted on weapons to indicate damage. “The biggest reason why it is important for us to conduct these joint exercises is to figure out what we can and can’t do,” Tonkinson said. “It’s all great on paper, but until it is put into practice, we won’t know for sure what works. We push what these people experience to as close to a real war as we can get. Literally the only thing that happens out here that’s not real are live bullets.” Though the sun was blaring, stomachs grumbling and shoulders drooping with exhaustion, each service member, no matter what country they call home, continued on toward a common goal: to become better. “We are sculpting how NATO is going to operate in the future, not only with the alliance itself, but also with all the partner nations,” Tonkinson said. “Anybody and everybody who is a troop contributing nation are coming through here to exercise how

just good planning, it is an expectation. This program relies on Airmen taking care of one another, which is what I ask of all (our Airmen) on a daily basis. If Airmen are in a good place mentally, physically, socially and spiritually, when the rubber meets the road, their focus can fall on safely and effectively executing the mission. US service members receive 'heroic welcome' on Ramstein

Page 3 those who need help. “I would say it was more so how I was raised, and the Air Force just gave me the tools I needed to be the person I have always wanted to be I guess,” Stone said. “There have been a bunch of influential people in my career so far that have just helped me gain the knowledge that I have.” When asked about his family, Stone cracked a smile. “Oh yeah. My family is proud of me. My brother is yelling ‘my brother is an international hero!’ screaming over the phone. My mother, sister, friends, family, neighbors — everyone is excited for me.” The story has been played out in the public light over the past few days and is certainly an intense ride. Many said

that it feels like a movie in the making. Jokingly Stone said that if they ever do make this into a movie, he knows exactly who he wants to play him. “Denzel Washington, but I don’t think that would ever happen,” Stone joked. Despite his fairly calm demeanor only days after the attack, Stone was able to reflect on the event as a day that could have gone a lot differently. “If it wasn’t for Alek and Anthony, I’d be dead,” Stone said. “I wouldn’t have been able to do it by myself. He definitely woulda’ got me.” The gunman had multiple magazines and almost 300 rounds of ammunition. “He seemed like he was ready to fight to the end,” Stone said. “So were we.”

Airman 1st Class Spencer Stone meets Lt. Gen. Timothy M. Ray, 3rd Air Force commander and 17th Expeditionary Air Force commander, upon his arrival to Ramstein Aug. 24. More than 200 Airmen and their families came out to line the streets and thank Stone and his friends for their bravery. Stone arrived on Ramstein while in transit to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center for follow-on medical treatment. Stone received multiple injuries, all of which were non-life threatening, while subduing an armed gunman on a train traveling from Amsterdam to Paris. Stone, along with childhood friends, Aleksander Skarlatos and Anthony Sadler, were recently honored by French President François Hollande for subduing an armed gunman when he entered their train carrying an assault rifle, a handgun and a box cutter. Stone is an ambulance service technician with the 65th Medical Operations Squadron stationed at Lajes Field, Azores.

my headphones off and turn around in my seat, get low and kinda look around.” At this point the gunman had passed Stone and Skarlatos. It was at that moment their lives changed. “Alek taps me on the shoulder and says ‘go get ‘em!’ and that’s when I got up and I sprinted at him,” Stone said. “It was a long sprint. It felt like slow motion,” Stone continued. “I heard him charge it (the assault rifle) a few more times and heard a ‘click.’ It still wasn’t working.” Stone explained that every time he heard a “click,” he feared that he would die. “I heard the ‘click’ and thought, ‘whew!’ I’m still here,’” Stone said. Stone finally made contact with the gunman, throwing his body into him. The two started grappling. “I was feeling for the gun and couldn’t find it,” Stone said. “I felt it a couple times, but he kept taking it away. So I just put him in a rear naked choke to protect myself, and my friend, Alek, came up and took the AK. But he just kept pulling weapons left and right. He pulled a handgun,

and it seemed liked he pointed it back at me and I heard it click.” It is not apparent why the guns malfunctioned so many times, but it gave the trio time to wrestle them away from the gunman. “I saw him making a slashing motion,” Stone said. “When I leaned over his shoulder I see he has about a six-inch box cutter blade, and I look down and my thumb is hanging halfway off.” At this point Stone lost his grip on the gunman. “I let him go and by that point the shooter was in the middle and me, Alek and Anthony are just surrounding him and we just started pounding him,” Stone said. “I got him in another choke, and I choked him out until he went unconscious, and my friend kept hitting him in the face with the gun.” The gunman was down. The trio began assessing any other threats in the area. “My friend (pointed) out the guy who got hit in the neck,” Stone said. “I don’t know how he got hit, but he was spurting blood everywhere. So I yelled out ‘I’m a medic I’m a medic!’ and took the guy and held him down. I just stuck my finger in

his neck, found what I thought was an artery and just pressed down. I held that position until authorities came.” At this point, Stone was pretty badly wounded. His thumb was nearly severed, and he had sustained gashes that were dangerously close to major arteries. The nurses later told him that he was lucky that the cuts were not further over. Despite his wounds, he never had a second thought about helping someone else. “I felt like I was the only person who could help him,” Stone said. “I didn’t really care about my injuries at that point because I thought that guy was gonna die, so I wanted to give him a fighting chance.” Stone said that he believes everything happens for a reason. Every moment in life leads to the next. He said that there was a reason he and his friends were on that train and that they moved to first class. “I feel good that we were able to save those people there in that right moment,” Stone said. Stone, 23, has been in the Air Force for nearly three years. His training as a medic prepared him for reacting in situations like this, but his family taught him to help

Carpathian Summer’s first week closes with high spirits Story and photo by Senior Airman Timothy Moore 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs OTOPENI AIR BASE, Romania — Spirits were high among the participants of exercise Carpathian Summer as the first week came to a close Aug. 20 at Otopeni Air Base, Romania. The exercise was designed to increase readiness and interoperability between the U.S. Air Force and Romanian air force. This was not the first time the allies have trained together, and they showed the progress prior exercises had produced. In previous exercises with the 37th Airlift Squadron, Romanian pilots aided the U.S. pilots by providing intelligence about the area and the weather they would be flying in for planning purposes. For Carpathian Summer, the Romanian pilots flew alongside their partners in formations made up of 86th Airlift Wing C-130J Super Hercules and Romanian air force C-27J Spartan aircraft. “It’s not only a matter of how you plan or execute a mission,” said Romanian air force Lt. Col. Emil Tecuceanu, 902nd Transport and Reconnaissance Squadron commander and Carpathian Summer director. “Today, we are flying in a peaceful environment. Tomorrow we could fight together, and we have to know each other’s techniques in order to be successful in the mission. This is the

main objective of such exercises.” The first week of the two-weeklong off-station training exercise, though suffering from minor setbacks due to weather, produced favorable results as pilots, loadmasters, maintenance personnel and other supporting members conducted training which increased their

proficiency also allowing them a view of the Romanian forces’ operations. “It’s been fantastic,” said Capt. Lindsey Kinsinger, Carpathian Summer mission commander. “The Romanians are extremely helpful. They have been supporting all of our requests, and they’re always here to

learn from us and give us feedback we need to improve our own training.” Approximately 80 personnel and three C-130Js spent the first week working on a multitude of training events. U.S. Air Force pilots conducted low-level day and night flying operations, dropping both cargo and personnel. Thus, loadmasters were able to complete training involving loading and dropping airborne deliveries that allows them to support real-world contingencies. Romanian paratroopers also practiced both freefall and static line airborne operations alongside their U.S. counterparts, further increasing their infiltration capabilities. The 37th AS swapped out personnel on Aug. 21 to allow for more individuals to experience working alongside their NATO allies. With the kinks ironed out during the first week, U.S. personnel and their Romanian counterparts had the opportunity to get even more value for the remainder of the exercise. “My favorite part is when I see my guys and all the squadrons involved flying and executing missions,” Tecuceanu said. “This is the most exciting part of an exercise, as a squadron commander, when you see your guys accomplishing the mission together with your partners.” Tecuceanu said he looks forward to how the two forces will evolve while training and conducting missions together in the future.

New 3rd AF commander charts path to organizational success by Tech. Sgt. Ryan Crane U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa Public Affairs In the ninth grade he made up his mind. Lt. Gen. Timothy M. Ray, 3rd Air Force and 17th Expeditionary Air Force commander, had dreams of flying his whole life and, at the end of his freshman year of high school, determined the Air Force Academy would make his dream a reality. Thirty years after graduating from the Academy and more than 4,000 hours in seven military aircraft, Ray’s focus has shifted to that of a strategic leader and commander of operational Air Forces in Europe and Africa. The general outlined his priorities and shared his vision for the future of the 3rd AF and 17th EAF during an interview Aug. 7 on Ramstein. “It’s not about what you are here to do, but why you are here to do it,” Ray stressed. “Europe is a very strategic place at an important time in history, and the reason we are here is American airpower. You are not just here to execute a flying schedule or process reports. You are here to produce American airpower. What you are doing makes a difference in the world.” Ray explained that the U.S. Air Force is able to respond quickly to support U.S. European Command, U.S. Africa Command and U.S. Central Command priorities because of the forces stationed here. “We can make an immediate impact for peace and stability in these areas,” Ray said. “It’s different than being in the states. Our presence and our capabilities directly support two combatant commanders in executing the mission we have right here in front of us every day.” He said that while the command supports many contingency operations, he still has an obligation to ensure the Airmen in his command are organized, trained and equipped properly.

“We have to keep a very careful balance between operational missions and training, and we have to make sure that balance is correct,” Ray said. He said whether it’s an operational mission or a training exercise, leaders set the tone for success in any unit. “Leaders strike a vision for the future and chart the course for change,” Ray said. “My job is to lead leaders and set the culture and the climate.” The success of an organization can be traced back to the climate a commander has fostered. Ray hopes to

foster a climate that values a balance of work and family. He and his wife have been married for 28 years and have four children. He said his family’s support has been invaluable throughout his career. “When you can choose between work and family, choose your family,” Ray said, “because there will be times where you can’t choose, and your family needs to know when those times are. The peace and happiness you get with your family when you are out of the military is worth 10 times more than any rank

you will ever make.” The DeLand, Fla., native said that aside from his family, his main source of motivation comes from his pride in airpower and the faith he has in his peers. “The people I work with are just incredible,” Ray said. “It is absolutely fascinating to be working the operational issues along the strategic side of Europe and Africa. I can’t think of a more exciting place in the world to be than right here. This is the best job in the U.S. Air Force right now.”

NCOA, Romanians share culture, knowledge by Staff Sgt. Armando A. Schwier-Morales 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Two instructors visited the Romanian Warrant Officer and NCO military school at Boboc Air Force Base, Romania, for two weeks to show 12 Romanian future and current NCOs how the U.S. Air Force develops and trains its NCOs. Tech. Sgts. Arionea Adams and Tamera Hall, Kisling NCO Academy instructors, shared the knowledge they gained when they became instructors at the school house on Kapaun Air Station. “What we did was a consolidated course and shared highlights of it, so they could incorporate into what they are already doing,” Hall said. “We weren’t trying to change what they do, just supplement it.” The Romanian air force is transitioning from a lecture-based study to a more interactive experience, in which Kisling has experience. “We found that we have the same or similar struggles whether it’s with discipline, motivation or communication in general,” Hall said. “They were very grateful to know we face the same struggles that they do.” Adams and Hall may have been the instructors teaching, but they were also students developing their cultural awareness and critical thinking that

they can bring back to their classes. “(At the academy) we talk about the tools we should have when we engage with different cultures, but the firsthand experiences can definitely add to the examples and ability to relate to the material even more and help portray that to our students,” Hall said. During their future classes they can

discuss their time in Romania when they learned traditional Romanian dances and shared an American tradition — line dancing. The opportunity, they said, to build partnerships between allies was gratifying. “This opportunity is humbling, to be in a position to influence and build partnerships. I don’t have the words for it. I am grateful that I was

selected to do so,” Adams said. Whether it was sharing the best methods to teach NCOs or sharing how Americans celebrate the Fourth of July, the two weeks of instruction came to an end. However, Hall and Adams both said the teachers and students left with experiences and ways to develop future leaders of both air forces.

Story and photo by Senior Airman Nicole Sikorski 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Tightening their helmets and straddling their seats, 10 motorcyclists from Ramstein rev their engines before the ride began Aug. 15 on Ramstein. Airmen assigned to the 435th Contingency Response Group came together for a

mentorship ride in the local area to show new riders what it’s like behind the handlebars on German roads. “It’s important to have that mentorship available to show the (younger guys) how to ride both properly and safely,” said Tech. Sgt. Marc Warman, 435th Contingency Response Support Squadron NCOIC of current operations. The annual ride started out as a squadron event and eventually branched out to the

wing, giving inexperienced riders the opportunity to ride alongside someone who is familiar with European roads. Safety is paramount when operating any motor vehicle, but one with two wheels can pose concerns that newcomers may not be familiar with upon arrival to Europe. There are a few important things newcomers should be aware of in Germany as opposed to the U.S., said Warman.

“The signs and speed limits are different here,” Warman said. “The autobahn is pretty safe with the fast lane being to the left and the slower lane to the right, but the speed limits are a lot higher. On a motorcycle you don’t take up a lot of room on the road, so it is very easy to get into someone's blind spot.” Also reinforced in the group is the adherence to the Air Force motorcycle regulations and ensuring newcom-

ers are equipped with the proper personal protective equipment before the ride. “If you fall over, you need gear to keep you from getting road rash as well as other accidents that could occur,” Warman said. Not only does the mentorship program keep drivers safe on the roads of Europe, but also builds morale and camaraderie within the group. “I joined the (group) in an attempt to break out of my ‘to work and back’ riding routine,” said Staff Sgt. Randall Summers, 1st Air and Space Communications Operations Squadron intelligence systems operations supervisor. “This has not only done just that but has introduced me to a completely different side to riding that I’d never known about before — that being the (brotherhood) mindset ... This felt very much like the military camaraderie that I've grown to know over my years of service.” The mentor ride program will continue to keep Airmen safe by encouraging safe practices, while still filling their appetite for adventure with the open road.

Online customs form for mail parcels, packages

Customers can avoid waiting in line longer at post office finance windows if they complete an online customs declaration using the U.S. Postal Service website when presenting parcels and packages for mailing at the Air Force Post Office. Customers have several options available to them when completing required customs declarations using the USPS website, USPS.com. Option 1: Customers can chose the USPS “Click-NShip” feature to establish an account, complete their customs declaration and pay for their mailing using one of several USPS approved credit cards. Customers who choose this option will receive a discounted commercial base price versus the standard retail price. Option 2: Patrons can also print a customs declaration on the USPS website without establishing an account and then pay at the postal finance window when presenting their parcels and packages for mailing. In addition, APOs will soon offer customers the option to use a customer work station at the APO for going online and completing a customs declaration before presenting mail pieces at the postal finance window. Patrons who do not present articles for mailing with an online declaration can mail their packages using the hard copy customs declaration, but

it will take longer for mail clerks to process the transaction. When parcels are presented for mailing without an online customs declaration, mail clerks will be required to manually enter each item listed on the declaration in the point of sale equipment that they use to complete the transaction. This will result in longer customer waiting times and longer lines at the post office finance windows. As an incentive for customers who arrive at the post office with online, preprinted U.S. customs declarations, many U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa post offices plan to have a separate, expedited mail acceptance window available for customer use. The USPS as well as postal administrations worldwide must implement new Global Trade Compliance requirements that will result in changes in how mail must be processed and dispatched. For the U.S., changes will give USPS, the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Customs and Border Patrol more visibility to what is arriving into the U.S. and from where. Official government mailings are currently not affected by new mandated requirements. For additional information on how to complete a customs declaration form online, visit the USPS website at https://reg.usps.com/ entreg/LoginActioninput?a pp=GSS&appURL=https:// cns.usps.com/labelInformation.shtml.

Today: Baked feta What do we need?

(Recipe is for four people) • 500 grams of feta cheese • 1 bell pepper (or if you can get them, take these little bell pepper mix boxes to add a little more color to your meal) • 8 to 10 small vine tomatoes • 4 green peperoni • 4 small shallots (I would suggest the purple ones for a nice color) • Basil, oregano, sea salt, black pepper corns, a bit of chili powder (if you like it a little spicy) • Olive oil • Aluminum foil You can prepare this recipe on the grill or in the oven. Both will taste great.

Preparation:

Cut the feta cheese into four equal slices. Take four pieces of aluminum foil that are big enough to hold all the ingredients. Remove the stalk from the bell peppers. Cut the bell peppers in thin slices and cut the tomatoes in half. Peel the shallots and cut them in thin slices.

Enjoy

Put some olive oil in your aluminum foil, then put the sliced feta cheese and some sliced tomatoes in it. Add the bell peppers, shallots/onions and one peperoni. Spice it up with some basil, oregano, sea salt, black pepper and chili. Put some more olive oil on top of it. Then wrap it, and put in the oven or on your grill. Let it bake for about 8 to 10 minutes. The time depends on how darkly baked you prefer it. When done, you will have a delicious Mediterranean side dish for any steak! To prevent it from cooling down too much, put the parcels on the plates and open them up right before you start eating. The smell will just be awesome when you finally open it, believe me.

Hope you will enjoy this as much as I did, when trying this recipe! See you next time...

AF Senior leaders give State of the Air Force address by Senior Airman Hailey Haux Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs Command Information WASHINGTON — Secretary of the Air Force Deborah Lee James and Chief of Staff of the Air Force Gen. Mark A. Welsh III held a State of the Air Force address at the Pentagon Aug. 24. The first topic of discussion was about Airman 1st Class Spencer Stone’s heroic actions aboard a train in France. James briefed that Stone’s unit will be nominating him for the Airman’s Medal. “American Airmen bind themselves to a set of core values: integrity first, service before self and excellence in all we do,” James said. “Airman Stone and his friends personified ‘service before self.’ Their fearless-

to an Ebola outbreak in West Africa, providing humanitarian relief in Nepal, maintaining ongoing commitments in Afghanistan and in the Pacific, and reassuring allies in Europe in the face of a resurgent Russia. James announced an upcoming training exercise that will involve an F-22 Raptor deployment to Europe. Welsh highlighted the advanced aircraft’s capabilities saying that European allies would like the Air Force to operate with them in multiple types of scenarios. “Being able to train side by side with them and do that kind of training is really important to us,” he said.

“This is a natural evolution in bringing our best air-toair capability in to train with partners who have been long and trusted ones.” James also discussed the fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant where the Air Force has executed nearly 70 percent of the air strikes and flown more than 48,000 sorties supporting operations in Iraq and Syria. “We are now one year into Operation Inherent Resolve,” James said. “We’ve said from the start this would be a multiyear fight requiring political, economic, and military actions. We’ve made good progress with our strategy of deny, disrupt, and ultimately

defeat. Thanks to airpower, we denied their advances and have completely disrupted their tactics, techniques, and procedures.” The secretary went on to say the Air Force is still the greatest on the planet because of its Airmen. “America expects an Air Force that can fly, fight and win against any adversary,” James said. “We must continue to give our nation the Air Force capability it needs today and well into the future. This will only occur by properly investing in our Airmen and our capabilities.” James and Welsh then answered a multitude of questions from media on a widerange of topics.

he 86th Force Support Squadron Ramstein Community Center is scheduled to present three members of the KMC first place awards for two separate categories for the Air Force’s 2015 Operation Talent Search Sept. 11 on Ramstein. Eighty-nine acts from 23 bases were submitted for the talent search. As Ramstein received the highest score based on first and second place winners, it will receive $1,500 separate from the winners’ own rewards. Leonor Alton won first place in the category of children 6 to 8 years old, performing as a solo or group act, and will receive $500. She sang “Let It Go” by Kristen AndersonLopez and Robert Lopez from the

Disney motion picture “Frozen.” “Anca (Leonor’s mother) and I were very happy and proud of her,” said Senior Master Sgt. Ryan Alton, U.S. Air Forces in Europe Air Operations Center functional aerial manager and Leonor’s father. “For Leonor, she was just happy to sing her heart out in front of an audience. The best part about that night was not that she won, but that you could see the audience really enjoyed her performance. That made us the most proud.” Master Sgt. Scott Linza, USAFE command services readiness and plans manager, and his daughter, Sierrah, won first place in the parent and youth category and will also receive $500. Linza played the piano while Sierrah played the flute, performing an excerpt from the “Phantom of the Opera” theme song. “Sierrah was really the one that initiated signing up for the talent

show,” Linza said. “For me, competing was to help her gain the experience, and once we started practicing it was fun. We could be very creative about what we were doing and put our own personal touch on it, which I thought was cool. I was proud of my daughter for taking the steps to want to compete.” The competition is open to all active-duty, Guard and Reserve members and their immediate families. Participants can enter in the following categories: parent and youth; husband and wife; children 6 to 8 years old, solo or group; pre-teen, 9 to 12 years old, solo or group; teen 13 to 15 years old, solo or group; teen, 16 to 18 years old, solo or group; and family, three or more members of the same immediate family. Air Force extends SAPR services to AF civilians by Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs WASHINGTON — The Air Force released a policy memo today allowing Air Force civilian employees who are victims of sexual assault to file restricted and unrestricted reports with their installation’s sexual assault response coordinator. The policy is effective immediately and allows SARCs and sexual assault prevention and response victim advocates to assist Air Force civilians who report sexual assaults by providing crisis intervention and advocacy services 24 hours a day, seven days a week. “Our civilian Airmen are valuable members of our team, and we’re going to support them,” said Secretary of the Air Force Deborah Lee James. “While this is a huge win for the Air Force and our civilian force, we will continue to work at all levels to prevent sexual assault.” The Department of Defense recently signed an exception to policy, granting

the Air Force the authority to extend SAPR services. Air Force civilian employees will now receive the same services as those already eligible to use SARC services, with the exception of legal and non-emergency medical services, which are restricted by law. Prior to this exception, only civilian employees at overseas locations and their dependents 18 years old or older were eligible to use SARC services, and they could only file unrestricted reports. SARCs and SAPR victim advocates will assist in contacting the appropriate law enforcement agency for Air Force civilians who file unrestricted reports to ensure reports are properly investigated and prosecuted. They will also be able to help civilians identify and contact additional offbase support organizations as needed. “Our SARCs and victim advocates provide invaluable support and assistance to our uniformed Airmen who have suffered from this horrible crime,” said Maj. Gen. Gina Grosso, Air Force SAPR director. “We knew

we could do more to help our civilian Airmen, so we sought an exception to policy to allow the Air Force to extend

Bad Dürkheim Wurstmarkt – The World’s Biggest Wine Festival The Wurstmarkt (sausage market) in the spa town of Bad Dürkheim is the world’s biggest wine festival with over 600,000 visitors each year, taking place on the second and third weekend of September.

Pfälzer Party of the Year

The Wurstmarkt, or Bad Dürkheim Wine Festival as some people refer to it, is one of the largest, most traditional and entertaining wine festivals in Germany. It is over 570 years old, and still as young as ever – it is the festival of festivals – the main party event of the year in the Pfalz. It takes place in the middle of the town, outside the famous giant wine cask (Dürkheimer Riesenfass) – the largest wine barrel in the world, which also houses a restaurant. The festival is reminiscent of a Weihnachtsmarkt, with fairground rides and many food stalls being temporarily installed for the event.

Overflowing Wine

You can enjoy over 150 different wines only from the Bad Dürkheim region in over 50 different places throughout the fest – from the mellow Riesling to the finest sweet ice-wine available in the many wine tents. Or visit one of the many traditional “Schubkärchler” – small traditional wine stands with scrubbed wooden tables worn smooth over the years. Or if you prefer to enjoy a fine wine in a more tranquil and intimate atmosphere, the Weindorf – the sophisticated wine village – is the place for you. Bad Dürkheim wine loses none of its flavor wherever you drink it. There is even a beer hall for those that prefer the grain to the grape!

distinctive features of the festival – party hard in one of the large wine halls which are similar in atmosphere to Munich’s Oktoberfest. Traditional German brass bands will play schlager music (party music) and popular hits that will have you dancing on the tables and linked arm-in-arm with your neighbors.

Fairground & Attractions

Whilst wine is the center of attraction, the Wurstmarkt would be unthinkable without its travelling fairground attractions and numerous stalls that offer fun for the whole family. A huge Ferris wheel sits in the center of the festival grounds – when you sit at the top it offers the best views of this incredible event as well as the surrounding vineyards.

St. Michael’s Chapel

Why not take time out between glasses to enjoy a short walk to the Michaelskapelle (St. Michael’s Chapel) which sits on the Michaelsberg above the market. Up until the 15th century, pilgrims walked up the hill on St. Michael’s Day and this is the origin of the Wurstmarkt festival. Local poet Karl Räder once said of this hugely popular event: “The Wurstmarkt is the only festival where you meet old friends

you’ve never seen before.” Exactly right, come along and enjoy this huge event and leave with some terrific memories and new ‘old’ friends.

Getting There

Enjoy the wine without having to worry about driving. The greatest wine festival in the world is in the heart of the Pfalz and is easy to get to by bus or train from any direction – right around the clock. Leave your car at home and just enjoy yourself. http://militaryingermany.com/bad-durkheimwurstmarkt-biggestwine-festivalworld

Origins of the Festival

In the 12th century, local farmers and wine growers began to gather to sell their produce to the pilgrims heading towards the chapel on top of a nearby mountain, Michaelsberg. By 1417, the event was known as Michaelismarkt and over the next few centuries, it grew into a three-day fair. It was first called Wurstmarkt in 1832, simply because a large number of sausages were sold during the fair – the name stuck and the market morphed into what it has become today – the world’s biggest wine festival.
