CSAF returns to Ramstein roots Story and photo by Tech. Sgt. Sharida Jackson 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

Beep. Beep. Beep. A cashier scans items and sends them down the conveyor belt to the bagger. ‘Baggers work for tips only’ are the words displayed on signs near the registers. Baggers can range anywhere from teenagers to retirees. They might even go on to become four-star generals. Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David L. Goldfein recently visited the Ramstein Commissary, but this was not his first time here. As a teenager, he worked as a bagger in the 1970s while his family

Goldfein worked with Searchwell as a bagger at the Ramstein Commissary. Searchwell has worked at the commissary for nearly 50 years and has known Goldfein for more than 40 years. said Goldfein. “This was one of my first jobs and I’m thankful

to have had the opportunity to work with such great people.” During his youth at Ramstein, Goldfein worked for head Bagger Charlie Searchwell, who has worked at the commissary for nearly 50 years. Searchwell described Goldfein as hard working, friendly, and appreciative. “A lot of chiefs, colonels, and leaders come back,” Searchwell said. “They don’t forget their first job.” Goldfein and Searchwell embraced and chatted briefly upon seeing each other, reminiscing on their time spent working together. “He was a great boss,” Goldfein said. “He had high standards and wouldn’t put

up with folks not showing up on time.” Goldfein passed through Ramstein on his way back to the states after visiting Airmen at various installations across the Middle East. During the Ramstein visit, Goldfein met with baggers, greeted shoppers, and bagged groceries for customers with his former boss. Chief Master Sergeant Jackie Harris, 24th Intelligence Squadron superintendent, was stunned that the Air Force Chief of Staff himself was returning to his Ramstein roots as a bagger. “He’s down here bagging groceries, you rarely see that,” said Harris. “This is servant leadership at its best.”

Airmen across Ramstein Air Base support a massive mission every day, and its leadership is working hard to bolster mission readiness from top to bottom. The installation is the headquarters of U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa, and serves as the main thoroughfare for operations across Europe, Africa, and Central Asia. Ramstein’s host unit is the 86th Airlift Wing, which boasts seven groups and more than 30 squadrons. The base also hosts the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing and the 521st

Air Mobility Operations Wing. With a mission of such magnitude, it’s no surprise many Airmen may find themselves stressed out, said Chief Master Sgt. John Alsvig, 86th Maintenance Squadron superintendent. “We work on aircraft that get older and older and break over time,” he said. “Juggling the work, training, and operations tempo is very hard. To add to that, we as an Air Force have a huge administrative burden on our supervisors to make sure computerbased training, enlisted performance reports, and enlisted professional military education are all completed in a timely manner.

Seeing red: A remedy with a melody by Senior Airman Devin Boyer 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Anger is a wildfire. When it’s just an ember, a simple splash of water can put it out. But if you let it grow, it becomes dangerous and tougher to extinguish. I’ve never been the type of person to express my true feelings to people. I’m stubborn to the core, so I bottle everything inside — not just anger, all of my emotions. I guess I feel as if my problems will burden the people around me. I can’t help but feel this way because I’ve seen it happen with my own eyes. Over the course of my life I’ve struggled with anger. In the moment I never felt I had “anger issues,” but in hindsight, it’s quite apparent. I would take the yelling, teasing and every confrontation I had like a punching bag. Until someone pushed me too far, I would never push back. I was a like a dormant volcano waiting to set the world ablaze, and I never knew how to deal with it. As a kid I was afraid. I was afraid if I defended myself, the consequences would be insufferable. If someone punched me, I wouldn’t punch back. If someone screamed at me, I would just stand there. I believe my fear derives from my parents. Anytime I would speak out about something to them, they scolded me for it. It was as if my feelings did not matter to them. I know that’s not true now, but in the

moment, that’s how I felt. I hated this fear because inside I wanted to unleash my wrath upon those who made me feel small. One day, I came close. I was 12 years old. I don’t quite remember what the argument was about or how it started because I completely blacked out. All I remembered was my brother and I at each other’s throats, a very common theme for siblings. Only this time, he said something to me that ignited the wildfire. Next thing I remembered was him pinning me against the refrigerator after I threatened to take his life as well as my own. I remember my skin feeling hot to the touch and my face was numb from screaming. As I yelled, it felt as though my vocal cords were ripping apart. After calming down, all I could do was sob. Later that night, my brother told my parents what happened. I went to my school’s guidance counselor the next day. I talked to him for a good hour about the outburst. It was insightful, but by no means was it a solution for my problem with anger. I tend to reject advice from people because I don’t like doing things unless it was my idea. I knew I had to find my own solution. It came to me naturally. I was always fascinated by music. The way notes and sounds seemingly fit together like puzzle pieces. It was calming. When I listened to music, I would hear the melody first. Then I’d hear the individual instruments working together to create something wholesome. I’d

even hear the ambient noises deep in the mix before I ever heard the lyrics. They were always last to hit my eardrums. Don’t get me wrong, lyrics are important. But without emotion, the lyrics fall flat. For me, the most important lyrics came from Chester Bennington. His lyrics resonated with me because he poured his heart and soul out with his voice. When I listened to him I could see his voice materializing into a raging fire much like the fire within me. It moved me. He was my hero. I fell in love with Linkin Park’s music from day one. I would close my bedroom door and blast their music on repeat. I would never get tired of it. Instead of exploding in a situation that made me feel angry, I’d keep quiet then go listen to Linkin Park. Chester did the screaming for me. This method helped my problems, but it still wasn’t enough. My fingers twitched when someone yelled at me. A nervous tick was keeping me from doing something stupid. I needed something more active to get my frustrations out. My friends and I jokingly talked about starting a band. A couple months later, we filled our homes with ear-splitting chaos. My first instrument was a bass guitar. After learning the basics, I began dabbling around with a six string guitar and decided to ditch the bass. I was hooked. I’d spend hours in my room strumming away at my cheap fake Gibson Les Paul. Eventually I became pretty decent at it, but I needed more.

My friend Casey was the drummer in our band. We had countless jam sessions, him and me. I remember thinking as I watched him play, “That’s got to be so much fun.” So I asked him to show me something simple on the drums, and from there, I realized what this could do for me. Sitting behind the kit is like sitting on the Iron Throne in “Game of Thrones.” I felt empowered. I could hit the drums as hard as I want and no one gets hurt. It was the perfect solution for my anger. My control over anger began to emerge, and the war inside me began to fade. Whenever I felt my blood boiling I’d simply think to myself, “I get to go play music after this,” and the infuriation would dissipate. I am not perfect though. Nobody is. There are times when my anger gets the best of me, and I still spiral out a little. The shoe-sized dent in my car can attest to that. My control over anger is significantly better than it ever was. I’m level-headed 99.99 percent of the time, and with little effort, I can bring myself down from things that amp me up. It helps knowing there is something I can do without taking medication to ease my mind. Medication has always been a last resort for me. If there’s a solution out there without the use of drugs, I will find it. Music isn’t the answer for everyone. I didn’t write this to say it is the perfect solution for people with similar problems. I want people who suffer from the same issues to know there is always something you can do. You just have to find it. I hope you find it soon.

PCS travel,” said Sabine Fehrentz, 86th LRS lead transportation assistant. “Not just for Ramstein personnel, but for all geographically separated units belonging to Ramstein.” No matter the situation, the 86th LRS TMO Passenger Travel office ensures safe and efficient travel for military members and their families. As of June 1, it is mandatory to use the government travel card for all Air Mobility Command flights leaving Ramstein, Baltimore, McGuire and Norfolk. Government travel cards must have enough credit limit to cover travel expenses. “Official government travel

is defined as travel under official orders to meet mission requirements,” said Master Sgt. Danayal Boyce Gilliam, 86th LRS passenger travel and personal property section chief. “Headquarters Air Mobility Command has mandated that you pay upfront billing for your travel, and a lot of people get to the terminal and are met with confusion because they didn’t know they needed their cards.” Service members can reference both the Travel and Transportation Reform Act of 1998, Public Law 105-264 and Department of Defense Instruction 5154.31 for further guidance regarding GTC use for all autho-

rized expenses relating to official government travel. “Since it is mandatory to use for all official travel, the member should always keep an eye on the expiration date and limit,” Gilliam said. “Members should contact their squadron agency program coordinator for questions regarding their GTC.” Every day, Airmen are using the 86th LRS’s resources to make their official travel experience run more smoothly. “As of today, we have issued 3,991 AMC tickets with a value of $4,109,044 and 7,000 commercial tickets with a value of $12,467,758,” Gilliam said. Emergency leave is chargeable leave granted to service members for personal or family emergencies involving immediate family or that of a spouse. The 86th LRS issued more than 322 emergency leave tickets in 2017, and a standby person is available 24/7 to book emergency leave if needed. Those truly impacted by the 86th LRS is immeasurable, and they strive to ensure interactions with customers are informative and helpful for each unique situation. For any questions regarding official travel, contact the TMO Passenger Travel office at 480-5373, 480-5374, or 435LRS.LGRTP@ US.AF.MIL. give his Airmen nine hours of work so they can have the remaining hours to complete additional duties and training. The visit provided an invaluable opportunity to provide such feedback to the team, he explained. “In maintenance, we have been constantly trying to lean maintainers out of support roles that are not their primary duty,” Alsvig said. “For the period they are doing these duties, they will not be fixing aircraft or maintaining aerospace ground equipment. It’s a constant struggle in our community to put as many Airmen on the line as possible.” Capt. Alan Kahan, 86th Airlift Wing Chaplain, listed work stressors as one of the factors which can cause morale to bog down. He emphasized the need for leaders to be aware of morale within their units, and for Airmen to make efforts to keep their own spirits up. Kahan also encouraged Airmen to be transparent about the issues they face. “It’s important that they understand the troops and their stressors,” he

said. “The Airmen need to understand that they can come to their leadership when they’re dealing with something. Otherwise they will try to mask it, and it’s going to end up biting the squadron and mission as a whole. So it’s important for leaders to get in touch with their troops and support those who are going through a situation.” Chaplains are commissioned officers tasked with helping Airmen maintain their morale and also their spiritual lives. They are often embedded with a unit, and conduct unit visitations while also providing guidance to leadership. Kahan explained that although chaplains have a religious affiliation and conduct services specific to certain religions, their duty to help sustain morale and spiritual well-being extends to Airmen of all or no faith. Chaplains ministering to Airmen of different faiths provide counsel through a religion-neutral perspective, he said. “I’m here for the Airmen, the troops

that I work with, and everyone here on base; our job is to help them,” said Kahan. Kahan cautioned against bottling up issues, saying stress can accumulate and eventually boil over — often in the wrong place at the wrong time. He added that there are many resources the Air Force has for an Airman who is struggling. Chaplains in particular, are bound by confidentiality and are barred from divulging any information someone shares with them, Kahan said. Alsvig said he has a very hopeful outlook on the Air Force’s revitalization program, adding that although he helped coordinate the meetings, the initiative would not be possible without its participants. “The real work was by the participants and interviewers,” he said. “I heard dozens of great ideas during the last few weeks, and many of them were visionary. I can’t wait to see even half of them implemented for the young Airmen that are just now entering into the Air Force.”

Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Savannah L. Waters 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The time has come. Whether someone is ready for the next adventure or trying their best to find the good in goodbye, a permanent change of duty station might be in the near future. “We have layers of stressors all throughout our organization,” he continued. “We also fight the environment: heat and rain in the summer, cold and snow in the winter.” Representatives from Headquarters Air Force recently visited Ramstein to interview Airmen of all ranks and to conduct focus groups, the intention of which was to drive to root causes of major challenges and to find actionable solutions for the field. Ramstein was the last base in the group’s tour of numerous Air Force installations. Alsvig served as the local point of contact for the field visit on Ramstein. He coordinated with organizations within the 86th Airlift Wing to help choose Airmen, government civilians, and even family members to participate in the CSAF team’s events, which occurred on Aug. 3 and 4. “You are inheriting a base that is truly in great shape,” Moore said. “As an engineer, (Feng) has very deep credentials, everything from providing policy to standing up a base and building it from nothing into something. You have a team to support you that is the very best the Air Force has to provide. “All of the group commanders in the front row, your fellow group commanders in the wing, they are all here to provide you anything you need, and I am as well,” he continued. “We look forward to a fantastic year and a great run.” Before receiving his final salute from the Airmen assigned to the 65th ABG as their commander, Furleigh thanked them for their hard work and dedication. “I’m fully confident Team Lajes will continue to excel,” Furleigh said. “Men and women of the 65th ABG, thank you for your relentless efforts and for providing me with so

many great memories.” As the new commander of the 65th ABG, Feng is now in charge of five squadrons, two flights and multiple staff agencies. While he said it would be tough to follow Furleigh, he is grateful for the opportunity to be the next group commander. “To the men and women of the 65th ABG, I look forward to working with all of you every day,” Feng said. “I promise to support the team as much as I can, build on training and continue to build the teamwork that has been put in place here.” The 65th ABG at Lajes Field is strategically located to provide support in combat operations by enabling the expeditionary movement of warfighters, war planes and global communications to combat commanders and supporting joint, coalition and NATO operations. Under its new command, the 65th ABG will continue to support the Air Force mission.

Fly away with Space A Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Joshua Magbanua 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Space Available, commonly known as Space A, is a program at many U.S. military installations around the world that allows military members, dependents, retirees and certain civilians to ride an aircraft to a destination at either a very cheap price or no cost at all. The program stems from the concept that if a military or contracted aircraft is headed to a particular destination and extra space is available, eligible passengers join the flight. Ramstein, which serves as a major Air Force hub, connects to many installations across Europe and the U.S. Master Sgt. Christian Stamper, 721st Aerial Port Squadron passenger terminal services section chief, emphasized that space availability depends on certain factors concerning the aircraft or the mission it supports. He mentioned that because of the unpredictable nature of military flights and missions, his Airmen cannot guarantee that Space A passengers will be able to board a certain flight or if a flight will take off at all. “Space A is a privilege,” Stamper said. “When mission and cargo holds allow, seats may be available to eligible passengers. Please be aware that Space A passengers must be prepared to cover commercial travel expenses if Space A flights are changed or become unavailable. “Do not demand to fly Space A,” he added. “If you have places you need to be at a certain time, Space A may not be the option for you.” Passengers hoping to fly Space A fall under six categories, with one taking the most priority and six taking the least. Category one is for people on emergency leave, while people on environmental morale leave are category two, and active-duty members on regular leave fall under category three. Category four is for dependents whose sponsors are deployed for 30 days or more, while dependents simply travelling without their sponsors fall under category five. Finally, category six is for retirees conducting leisurely travel. Airman 1st Class Cheyenne Wood, 721st APS passenger service agent, said one of the biggest challenges Space A passengers may face is obtaining an available seat, especially during peak seasons. “Active-duty members tend to take leave with their children over the summer,” she said. “They will take priority over dependents (travelling without sponsors) and retirees. It’s very common in the summer for us to not even get through all the categories. It is a little harder to try and fly out. … Summer is

definitely the busiest season for us.” Wood added that passengers who are making a permanent change of station do not fall under Space A but are booked through the travel office of their branch of service. Thus, PCS passengers take priority over those flying Space A. Passengers wishing to fly Space A must bring a number of documents depending on their category and purpose of travel. Active-duty members must bring their passport, leave form and military ID. Active-duty members must also wait until their leave officially starts prior to signing up for Space A. Dependents traveling with their sponsor must bring their passport and ID. If the dependent is travelling without their sponsor, they must bring a command sponsorship letter along with the two aforementioned documents. A dependent’s sponsor can refer to his or her chain of command to inquire about command sponsorship letters. The letter must also be signed by the sponsor’s commander. Retirees wishing to travel through Space A must have their passport and ID. Wood added that passengers traveling on emergency leave should have a Red Cross number in order for passenger service agents to contact and verify the passenger’s priority. Airman 1st Class James DeCoster, 721st APS passenger service agent, stressed the importance of passengers making sure they have everything they need before showing up at the terminal expecting a flight. “Make sure you’re 100 percent travel ready,” he said. “Make sure you’ve taken care of your lodging; you’ve

turned in your rental car; you’ve got all your baggage to include your personal items, carry-on and checked bags. If you don’t have all of that, you’re not considered travel-ready, and we cannot select you for that flight.” DeCoster explained that after being selected for a flight, the passenger can be ordered to go straight through check-in and security, and they will not have time to take care of any predeparture business. He also encouraged Space A passengers to be patient and flexible, saying that they are not guaranteed a seat, especially during peak seasons. The seasons a passenger is most likely to obtain a seat are spring, fall and winter, except for Christmas time, he said. “One minute can make the difference between being selected to board a Space A flight or having to turn around and pay for a commercial airline ticket,” DeCoster added. “If you’re going to wait until the last

minute thinking you’ll be picked up for a flight, it’s probably not going to happen. The earlier you sign up the better.” Passengers are allowed two checkin bags at 70 pounds each, plus one carry-on bag and one personal item. Those wishing to fly Space A are strongly encouraged to show up one hour before roll call. With the exception of active-duty members taking leave, potential passengers can sign up for Space A 60 days prior to their desired departure date. Passengers flying to Baltimore, Maryland, will pay a head tax of $34.46 with card or $34.50 with cash. The head tax is for all passengers regardless of age. To sign up for Space A or request more information, call 314-4794441/4442 or 06371-46-4441/4442. Customers can also sign up by emailing 721aps.ramsteinspaceasignup@ us.af.mil.

The passenger terminal is located by the flightline on Ramstein. The Space Available program stems from the concept that if a military or contracted aircraft is headed to a particular destination and extra space is available, eligible passengers join the flight.

Canadian veteran visits 86th AES to reclaim past Chris Klodt pushed his wheelchair through the cavernous cargo hold of a C-17 Globemaster III. Cot-racks were bolted to the floor in configuration for medical evacuation, carrying life-support equipment and medical supplies. He remembers very little about the day 10 years ago when a life-saving cabin much like this one carried him from Afghanistan to Lanstuhl Regional Medical Center. The time Klodt spent at LRMC was part of a string of events that changed this former Canadian soldier’s life, and he recently returned to piece back together what happened there. In 2006 Klodt was serving with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry when an ambush left him with multiple bullet wounds, including one in the neck. “Even when I was at Lanstuhl they weren’t sure if I was gonna make it,” Klodt said. “Both my lungs had collapsed, and the shot in my chest broke my sternum. They flew my parents out here to say goodbye, but I’m one tough bird I guess.” Klodt lost all hand and leg function as well as all sensation below his chest and has limited arm function. Though Klodt said he has come a long way in his rehab, there was another step to moving on that he wanted to accomplish. He returned to Germany along with Kent Hehr, minister of Veterans Affairs Canada, and an Invictus Games athlete and observed a C-17 Globemaster III static display configured for aeromedical evacuation, toured LRMC, and met and spoke with 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron and LRMC personnel. “It’s important to put the pieces back together because it’s part of my history,” Klodt said. “If you know

where you’ve been, you know where you’re going. It gives me direction in life.” Klodt took time to thank those who treat wounded service members, including some who were still around from the time that he came through. Along the way, personnel embraced him and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to meet. “What incredible care that goes on here,” Klodt said. “Not only to the individual who’s been injured but the family that comes to meet with them. You can’t say enough good things about these people. The hospital is absolutely incredible. It was so humbling because I lost seven days of my life there and it helps to fill in the gaps.” Though the damage Klodt sustained from his wounds was crippling, since his time at LRMC he has trained himself to function. “I’m back to a new normal, absolutely,” Klodt said. “I’m completely independent for a quadriplegic. I’m just moving on.” “Moving on” may be an understatement. Klodt became an athlete, competing in full-contact rugby, or “murderball,” and is scheduled to captain his team in the 2017 Invictus Games. The Invictus Games is an international, multisport event in which wounded, injured or sick armed services personnel compete. Having returned to Ramstein and LRMC, thanked the personnel and even met some of the people who were at LRMC 10 years ago, Klodt said that he is now very focused on the upcoming competition and his conditioning. “I’m going to give the U.S. team a run for their money,” Klodt said with a smile. The life changing events of 10 years ago have not stopped this vet from embracing the challenge of life. He, along with many other wounded military service members, are soldiering on.

Airman 1st Class Robert Allen, 86th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron aerospace propulsion journeyman, sits on the flight deck of a C-130J Super Hercules during an engine start on the flightline Aug. 15 on Ramstein. The maintainers follow a checklist to ensure everything on the aircraft is fully functional.

2 medium-sized onions, diced 2 cloves of garlic, diced 6-7 tablespoons oil 1 pound of mixed ground meat, beef and pork Salt Pepper ½ teaspoon paprika ¼ teaspoon sugar 2 tablespoons tomato paste 2 cans diced tomatoes 1-2 teaspoons dried oregano 2 kohlrabi, peeled 6 carrots, peeled 2 mozzarella balls, 250 grams total 1 cup grated Gouda

Heat oil in a large pot. Add mixed ground meat (if meat is fatty, you may not need to add the oil). Roast and grind into small pieces. Add onion and garlic and let it roast 1 minute. Add tomato paste let it roast again for 1 minute. Add diced tomatoes, 2 cups of water and a sip of red wine if you like. Let this come to boil. Add salt, sugar, pepper, paprika and oregano. Let this simmer on

medium heat for 15 minutes. Then add another cup of water. Let it simmer again for 15 minutes. The sauce shouldn’t be too thin so don’t add too much water. Cut the Kohlrabi in half and then slice each half in thin piece, approximately 1/8th of an inch. Slice the carrots in 1/8th of an inch as well. Put the mozzarella on paper towel to dry. Then tear into small pieces. Heat oven to 200 Celsius, or convection at 180 Celsius. Taste the Bolognese sauce. It should be a bit spicier than what you would normally like as it will be diluted in flavor when added to the vegetables. Spray a 9 by 13 dish with vegetable oil. Layer the vegetables first, then add the two cheeses. Then put the Bolognese sauce over the top. Repeat layers, ending with a layer of cheese on top. Put in the lower third of the preheated oven. Cook for 45-50 minutes. A lettuce salad with a raspberry vinaigrette dressing makes a good side dish. Try it with a Bardolino red wine.

Deployed Soldiers virtually connect to health care professionals by Regionally Aligned Forces Virtual Health team Regionally Aligned Forces stationed in Eastern Europe in support of Atlantic Resolve have virtual access to health care from their Garrison provider or specialists at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center thanks to the Regional Health Command Europe TeleHealth In A Bag platform. “(TeleHealth In A Bag) is a telemedicine concept that enhances Soldier health care through an ability to rapidly extend the reach of the medical team,” according to Sgt. 1st Class Todd Hall, RHCE Virtual Health noncommissioned officer in charge. “The tool allows the health care team in the operational setting to seamlessly connect with specialists and other resources in garrison.” In order to connect patients to specialists and providers from their home station, RAF providers are given a standardized telehealth equipment kit and issued a virtual exam conferencing space, which represents a secure, HIPAA-compliant private video chat room. THAIB leverages a secure webbased platform, which enables deployed units to connect to providers anywhere and to share live diagnostic images with various peripheral device functions, including an otoscope, high definition examination camera, and heart and lung sounds using a stethoscope device. “These peripheral devices can connect to any computer,” said Steven Cain, RHCE Virtual Health deputy and surgical physician assistant. “The best part is there is no extra software needed. The camera uses drivers already installed on the computer.” There are different ways units can use the THIAB system. For example, health care providers, including medics, can connect to other medical units in their area or back to a fixed garrison medical element such as Vilseck Army Health Clinic in Vilseck, Germany. Second, they can connect with their unit’s organic provider or any one of 28 specialties at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Cain said. One of the main uses of the THIAB to date is to connect Soldiers with their embedded behavioral health providers and unit behavioral health officers. “Think about the Soldier who has been seeing the BH provider in garrison but is now going to this stressful deployment,” Cain said. “Who better to connect with the Soldier regularly than the person who has been seeing him for two years. We think that is a very powerful connection.” This virtual health capability isn’t a new concept. Cain said that as early as

Photos by U.S. Army

Sgt. 1st Class Todd Hall, Regional Health Command Europe Virtual Health noncommissioned officer in charge, explains the components of the Telehealth In a Bag kit to medics and providers during a recent training event. THIAB connects Soldiers in deployed environments with garrison health care providers and specialists at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center.

1992 providers at LRMC were trying to connect to Soldiers in remote locations with a satellite, computer and a printer for the photos. However, it took 23 minutes for the pictures to download and print. “The need to reach back to organic unit medical resources in garrison or back to the medical center has not changed, just the technology” Cain said. “Provided an internet connection exists, we can leverage that connection to care for soldiers. It’s a readiness tool — to keep the group together, to keep them operational.” Maj. Daniel Weinstein, regimental surgeon for the 2nd Cavalry Regiment in Vilseck, agrees that THIAB is a force multiplier. “Integrating telehealth capabilities into our (aid stations), specifically for NATO’s enhanced forward presence mission, has allowed us to sustain the fighter far forward from the (military treatment facilities) and typical garrison-level care,” Weinstein said. “It also brings specialized care typically only seen at (hospitals) far forward, allowing 2CR to reduce the number of (medical evacuations). It has definitely expanded our ability to maintain readiness. It is the force multiplier that we need to revitalize our (aid stations and MTFs) moving forward.” U.S. Army Europe and NATO aim to expand their capability with THIABs to reduce unnecessary evacuations and improve readiness. “Operational telehealth is the right thing to do. We believe we are helping to fill an unmet need,” Cain said. “Bringing specialist care to the forward deployed or rotational Soldier can help keep them operational, keep the unit together to help complete the mission “ Currently, there are eight kits deployed to units across Eastern

Europe, Turkey and Africa as well as a number of sites for just face to face communications. “U.S. Army Europe bought eight THIAB kits,” according to Cain. “The RHCE virtual health team lends the units the virtual exam room space and provides the training, support and mentoring to help them use the equipment.” Virtual health in Europe is growing rapidly. This growth is evident in the garrison environment and is being accelerated in the operational medicine setting to support requirements in theater, Hall said.

He went on to say that operational medical forces demanded a dynamic virtual health system that supports teams in austere locations. “In late 2015, the USAREUR Surgeon’s Office requested assistance providing forward-deployed medics and providers with virtual health equipment to connect with other organic providers in support of Regionally Allocated Forces involved in Operation Atlantic Resolve,” Hall said. Originally, the medical devices to support operational forces and telementorship were part of an AMEDD Advanced Medical Technology Initiative grant awarded by the Telemedicine and Advanced Technology Research Center. “In the past, anyone on the medical team could only connect via data, voice and video and not through the advent of peripheral medical devices capable of transmitting biometric data that supports an enhanced picture of the patient,” Hall said. At present, there are no other Armywide enterprise solutions to provide this type of care to deployed forces in these locations outside of the THIAB. “While we are trying to provide a capability to the Soldiers in the east, we are also trying to contribute to the body of knowledge in the Army and create an enterprise solution,” Cain said. For more information on the RHCE Virtual Health program, visit https:// rhce.amedd.army.mil/landstuhl/.

Prayer breakfast will honor 9/11 events The Sept. 11, 2001, events that unfolded in New York and Washington, D.C., shocked and saddened the world. Although it’s been almost 16 years, people remember and will never forget the lives that were taken and the courage displayed by the men and women that put themselves in harm’s way to save the survivors on that fateful day. The U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz will commemorate 9/11 during a “National Day of Service and Remembrance Prayer Breakfast” from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Sept. 6 at Armstrong’s Club on Vogeweh. USAG RP Chaplain (Lt. Col.) Collin Grossruck clearly remembered the events of Sept. 11 like it was yesterday. “I was praying for my Special Operators of First Special Forces group, when I received a call to turn on television news. Needless to say, I saw the images of the World Trade Center attack and realized that everything was about to change.” And change it did. Three days later, U.S. Congress passed the “Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Terrorists,” thus beginning the War on Terror that

sent thousands of U.S. military members to Afghanistan and Iraq. From 9/11 on, Grossruck and his group would never be the same. “Our unit was instantly impacted with a former Soldier reported as a Pentagon casualty,” the chaplain recalled. “Just a few months later, one of my Soldiers, Nate Chapman, was killed in action.” As an Army Green Beret, Chapman became the first military casualty to die by enemy fire during the war in Afghanistan. He was buried on Jan. 11, 2002, a week after his death, with full military honors in Tahoma National Cemetery, Washington. “We, as a country, lost a lot during the events of September 11. We lost thousands of innocent victims and courageous first responders who risked everything to save lives. They are our true patriots. Events like this keep their spirits alive in our hearts and strengthen us as a RheinlandPfalz community,” said Col. Keith E. Igyarto, USAG RP commander. “Most of all it reminds us that as Americans and military members, we are resolved to protect our country, its people and the freedoms and ideals we believe in.” Chaplain (Col.) Paul Lasley, directorate chaplain for Installation Management Command-Europe, will be the guest speaker during the event.

Serving as a Ranger battalion chaplain and head chaplain for Special Operations Command, Lasley will convey his unique perspective of the 9/11 attacks and subsequent terrorism fight military members are still involved in today. “Chaplain Lasley is a very inspirational speaker and will turn our hearts to the aspect of how we are changed and will continue to change for the

better as we remember the events of 9/11 going forward,” Grossruck said. The event is free and open to all, and people can reserve seats at usarmy. rheinland-pfalz.imcom-europe.listusag-rp-rso@mail.mil or call Chaplain (Maj.) St. Wendel offers arts and crafts market

St. Wendel’s annual arts and crafts market takes place Saturday and Sunday in the center of town.

The city of St. Wendel will host its annual arts market, Sankt Wendeler LebensArt, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The historical streets of the old part of town will turn into a workshop for arts and craftsmanship. More than 90 artisans from throughout Germany, France, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands will present their works. “We are happy that our market has such a good reputation in Germany and neighboring countries,” said Peter Klaer, mayor of Sankt Wendel. “We are a city of quality and originality. Artisans have the chance to show off their works outside of museums and galleries.” Visitors can watch how the artisans create some of their items and ask questions about the different types of techniques they are working

It is located south of the Main River and borders the districts of Niederrad and Flughafen to the west and Oberrad to the east. It’s a beautiful and historic part of the city, and well worth a day of your time to explore it, discover it’s secrets and drink a little apple wine.

Sachsenhausen is basically divided into two parts. One is the fairly elegant portion that includes the Museum Mile and Schweizer Strasse and the other is the older, apple wine pub district. This older part would have been inside the city walls as far back as 1100. Traditionally, this is where the gardeners and fishermen of Frankfurt lived, and it was a rather poor section of the city, however is full of life today. Many of the pubs and restaurants in Old Sachsenhausen are in original half-timbered buildings. When you walk through the pedestrian zone, which is all cobblestones and narrow streets, you do get the feeling what it might have been like back in the Middle Ages. Well, except for all of those electric lights and the music, of course. Fortunately, this area was spared during the war, so they were able to keep the original look of the place, which is picture-postcard pretty. Lots of tourists like walking up the Klappergasse to check out the stone fountain, “Frau Rauscher,” as she spits out water. The best time to go here is in the evening, when everything is open, people are sitting outside at the tables and you can enjoy the wonderful party atmosphere. During the day it looks a bit tawdry, so try and go at night for the best experience. Back when 40,000 American troops were stationed in or near Frankfurt, you could barely walk
