Six members of the 435th Contingency Response Squadron Aircraft Maintenance Flight inte grated with the 48th Maintenance Group for F-15 hot-pit refueling training at RAF Lakenheath, United Kingdom, July 18-28. The training broadened the team’s scope of knowledge, enabling Airmen whose career field focuses primarily on heavy aircraft, to launch, recover and refuel the F-15 fighter platform. “This unique flight contains USAFE’s only active four-airframe qualified maintenance flight, pro viding light, lean, and lethal sup port in contested environments for mobility air forces and combat air forces,” said Tech. Building German and American Relationships
The organizations plan to meet quarterly to discuss issues in the community. They will work togeth er to create outreach videos to help bridge the gap between German police forces and the Americans. “We are the police for all citizens to include American forces and their families,” said Bernhard Christian Erfort, Polizei Kaiserslautern spokes person. “To get a partnership with the armed forces is essential and therefore we would welcome a meet ing on a regular basis. We are happy if we can give good advice to the KMC [Kaiserslautern Military Community] to help keep the community safe and protect the American citizens and help prevent crime.” If you have been drinking and need a safe ride home in the Kaiserslautern Military Community, Soldiers can contact Armed Forces Against Drunk Driving, an Air Force program, to get a ride back to their residence free of cost. The program requests the consumer volunteer one weekend to help others get home. AADD can be reached at +49 1525172-3356. Drinking alcohol during the summer months may quench your thirst, but doing so safely and without driving is key to a fun-filled, safe summer. The 21st Theater Sustainment Command Public Affairs Office, 21st TSC Bundeswehr Liaisons, American Forces Network Europe, and Polizei Kaiserslautern teamed up to educate Soldiers, civilians, family members and local-national employees on the dan gers and legalities of riding electronic scooters while impaired by alcohol. “It is sunny outside and it is warm,” said Kai Fauss, Polizeipraesidium Westpfalz police commissioner. “People are partying and having fun, so we have an increase of DUIs at this time. It is not only Americans it is also Germans, but we do have many Americans that have DUIs.” In Germany, driving drunk in cars is not the only way to receive a DUI. “Since an e-scooter is considered a motorized vehicle, the same DUI laws apply to an e-scooter,” said Yon Degen, Polizeipraesidium Westpfalz policeAccordingcommissioner.toGerman law, having a blood alcohol content of .05 will result in a DUI on an e-scooter. There are two types of violations for a DUI on an e-scooter in Germany: an administrative offense (equivalent to a misdemeanor in the U.S.), and a criminal offense. The type of offense you face is based on your age and blood alcohol content. “A non-criminal offense will have to have a blood alcohol con tent between .05 and 1.1 and if you are above 1.1 it is seen as a criminal offense,” said Degen. If they stop you while intoxi cated on an e-scooter, the Polizei will initiate an investigation and the German government will deter mine the punishment. “An administrative offense will receive a fine, usually 500 euros, two points Flensburg [point deduc tion from your driver’s license] and two months you will not be able to drive, and the more that happens, the higher the offense becomes,” said Degen. “A criminal offense receives a monetary fine and you can face jail time up to one year.” Like driving, when consuming alcohol, community members should avoid e-scooters at all costs.

This meeting isn’t the last time the two organizations will work together to address community concerns. “Having a relationship with the Kaiserslautern Polizei will help edu cate our American military com munity members and foster good relationships between our local national partners and American military community members,” said Command Sgt. Major Kofie Primus, 21st TSC senior enlisted leader. “Our intention is to keep an open door of communication between us and the Polizei to help address concerns in the community and be good neighbors.”
The Ramstein Clinic Satellite Pharmacy is now open from Tuesdays to Fridays from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Saturdays from 12 a.m.-4 p.m. Please note that the pharmacy will be closed every second Tuesday of the month and on federal holidays. The pharmacy provides an opportunity for beneficiaries to retrieve medi cations for those who have difficulty getting to the clinic during its operating hours.

Milt Poll, an anesthesiologist for the 86th Medical Squadron at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, used his military training to aid in rescueDuringefforts.an outing with fam ily and friends at a local aquatic center, Poll was playing with his daughter in a small wading pool when he saw a boy being pulled out of the water. According to Poll, the child was not breathing, and his skin was blue in color with small abrasions on his arms and face. “I noticed the staff was doing chest compressions,” recalls Poll, a native of Ogden, Utah. “Always being in the mindset to respond during emergencies, I began to assist with CPR and checking his pulse.” After several minutes, poll recalls the child beginning to move and breathing on his own, however he did not wake up. “The child did have some vomit in his mouth, so I cleared his month by turning his head to the side, and then we rolled him over, and I just maintained his airway, which is part of my training,” said Poll.Poll have been an anesthesi ologist for over nine years and been supporting the medical teams at LRMC for over two years. “I listened to his chest. His lungs sounded clear while I ensured that he continued to breathe while we waited for emergency crews to arrive.”Poll continued holding the air way open while performing a headto-toe evaluation. According to Poll, the responding medical team suggested the accident may have been a result of a collision which caused the child to lose conscious ness while in the pool. “I continued to make sure the boy’s vitals stayed stabilized until the medic team showed up, and I was asked to step aside,” said Poll. “They set up their monitors, put the EKG on him and gave him oxygen.”

After a minute, the child’s oxygen level stabilized and he regained consciousness. “I chose to become an anes thesiologist for two reasons really; because the field of anesthesiology has most all, been one of the things I enjoy about being a doctor and because I wanted to be prepared and confident to respond in an emergency like this one!”, said Poll.

A new medical complex for the KMC The Kaiserslautern Military Community Medical Center (KMCMC) is due to replace the existing facilities at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center – LRMC, built in 1953, and the clinic on Ramstein Air Base. Construction has been delayed, but is due to begin in fall 2022 with a projected completion date in 2027 at a cost of one billion U.S. dollars. The planned facility will include 120 patient rooms and a polyclinic, an administration tract, energy facilities and an entrance con trol point. The Rhine-Ordnance Barracks- Medical Center (ROBMC) entrance check point opened its gates in June and a small part of the complex is actually located within the boundaries of Ramstein-Miesenbach. Many members of the Kaiserslautern Military Community have found temporary or even per manent homes in one of the many villages and towns surrounding Kaiserslautern or in the heart of the Palatinate Forest.
The current Union Community of Weilerbach consists of the individual towns and villages of Erzenhausen, Eulenbis, Kollweiler, Mackenbach, ReichenbachSteegen, Rodenbach, Schwedelbach and Weilerbach as the administra tive seat. Mayor Ralf Schwarm has been in office since December 2021 and would like to extend a warm welcome (see Page 7). The total union communi ty has 14,300 inhabitants and an additional 5,000 members of the Kaiserslautern Military Community also call it their home. Churches, a customs station and Bavaria Traces of Celtic settlements have been found in the general area, but the town Weilerbach was first men tioned in a certificate in 1214 when King Friedrich II granted Reinhard von Lautern, Knight of Hohenecken, patronage rights of the church es in Ramstein, Weilerbach and Spesbach. Throughout the centu ries Weilerbach was governed by various royal families, from 1559 to 1592 it belonged to Pfalz Lautern, then up to the 18th century was part of the Kurpfalz (Electorate Palatinate). At an intersection of roads that led from Lautern to Kusel and Zweibrücken to Bingen, the community also served as a cus toms station. After a number of changing governments and under French rule from 1798 to 1814, it then became a part of Bavaria. After World War II Weilerbach became a separate community within the newly established State of Rheinland-Pfalz. Music on the go — my way In the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries, employment was very difficult to find in a rural area. Therefore, many talented musicians roamed the region play ing music, often traveling with circuses and acrobats, to make a living. Some emigrated to foreign countries or even to the United States, where they formed the “Mackenbacher” music organiza tion. It is noted that some of them actually became wealthy during the course of time and several prestigious houses in Mackenbach are reminiscent of the wandering musicians and their legacy. Heinrich Jacob from Mackenbach was one of the musi cians to seek his fortune in the USA. He was rather successful under his artist name “Bill Henry” and his band called “Headliners”. One of his early band mem bers, legendary Frank Sinatra, later became a world star. The Wandermusikanten Museum in Weilerbach has a diverse display of the life and times of the musicians and boasts Sinatra’s original trom bone in its selection of artefacts.

residents discovered an abandoned stud when fetching water, now known as the Tropfsteinhöhle Erzenhausen (stalactite cave). They found a 1.80 meter high stud with a total length of 76 meters. The discovery was a sensation with the most remarkable surprise being 20 centimeter long and 1 to 1.5 centimeter thick stalactites that had formed over 200 years. When light shines onto them, this creates a spooky atmosphere. A flashlight and sturdy, waterproof shoes are necessary for a visit and the cave is closed during the winter months to offer bats a place to hibernate.Anumber of findings indicate that there was a Celtic settlement near Weilerbach dating back to the late Hallstatt Era, about 620 – 450 B.C. During excavation work in 1875 a wagon grave was discovered along with a sheet metal ring, neck and arm rings out of bronze and wheel boxes and fittings. The 45 meter diameter of the grave mound is much larger than the typical grave mounds of nine to 20 meters and serves as criteria that a highly esteemed person was laid to rest. As the only cultural site of its kind in the Pfalz region, the Weilerbacher Wagengrab is a significant joint European Cultural Heritage site. The replica of the wagon grave was presented to the public in September 2021 and the steel con struction, encircled with sand stones, stands for the size of the grave mound. The actual site is in about 100 meters distance and the original wheel fittings are displayed in the Reinhard-Blauth-Museum.Intheyear1874another Celtic grave mound was discovered and based on the valuable grave goods, it is assumed that a prestigious man was buried there. The grave, dated back to about 400 B.C., is now known as the “Fürstengrab von Rodenbach” and is considered to be the most significant finding north of the Alps during the La Tene Era, with the most valuable items being a golden arm bracelet and a golden ring. The “Rodenbacher Heidegericht” is an old place of jurisdiction found with 13 stone chairs. Twelve of them are in a circle and the somewhat larger thirteenth one in the center, with its origin assumed in the Celtic period in Rodenbach. Modern mobility — pedal to the metal Weilerbach is working on an ambitious and intercommunal proj ect that aims toward climate friendly mobility. The Bachbahn Radweg project is in full swing and is expect ed to be completed in 2023. The route will connect Weilerbach, includ ing Rodenbach, KL-Siegelbach, KL-Erfenbach and Otterbach, to Kaiserslautern and partially leads along the old railroad track. Not only will the route pass through five com mercial areas with numerous busi nesses and thousands of employees, but mobility hubs will be provided at strategic locations, where e-bikes can be parked or charged, making use of the bike path even more attractive and enabling easier access to public transportation for onward travel.

Dear American neighbors and friends, The presence of members of the U.S. forces and their dependents has been a matter of fact for decades within our community. Not only is there a physi cal closeness due to the proxim ity of Ramstein Air Base, but a vidid neighborhood of friends has also developed. This is the way we see our American residents. The friendship between Ger mans and Americans is practiced and lived daily in the Union Com munity of Weilerbach. Encounters at various events, festivals and active participation in club life in many associations and clubs alow these friendships to deepen. But, there were also lively en counters and contacts to the U.S.A. before the presence of the U.S. forc es in our community. I especially re call the many wandering musicians (Wandermusikanten) in the 19th and 20th centuries, who emigrated and performed in the “new world“ in support of their families back home. Or, for example, Frank Sina tra, who as a young singer earned his first muscial spurs under the supervision of our local conductor HeinrichWeilerbachJacob. also became wellknown based on the construction of the new U.S. hospital, as the build ing complex is located within our community boundaries. As the mayor, I always look forward to mutual visits with the commanders to regularly discuss matters of world political interest or just the simple things of life, such as residing and living side by side here in our community. The bellows of laboring women and the crying of newborns is not a bother to U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Caige Chapman, whose jour ney as an Independent Duty Medical Technician has led him through deployments, emergency departments and now as the non commissioned officer in charge of the Labor, Delivery, Recovery, Postpartum Unit at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. An accomplished health care professional, Chapman lives by the creed “Stay ready so you don’t have to get ready,” a slogan he exhibited when he answered a call for sup port during a recent deployment to Poland with only five days’ notice. “They needed medical support (for the deployment),” explains the native of Castroville, Texas, who deployed with the 435th Contingency Response Group to Poland. “Two (IDMTs) ran a 24/7 shop to make sure if anyone needed medical care, they had it and pro vide any emergency response to the flightTheline.”(435th CRG) is the only American quick-deploying force in Europe that can build a makeshift airbase from which to launch oper ations anywhere on the continent and specializes in combat commu nications, air traffic control, cargo transportation and airfield man agement. The group is based out of Ramstein Air Base. During the deployment, Chapman and his counterpart were the only medical providers for approximately 150 Service Members with the 435th CRG. An IDMT is the only enlisted health care provider who can give care in the absence of a licensed, privileged or credentialed health care provider at U.S. Air Force med ical treatment facilities, host nation medical treatment facilities, and remote or deployed sites. According to Chapman, the professionals are authorized to provide a full range of medical care and prescriptions up to schedule II drugs, which include most narcotics. “(IDMT medical capabilities) include anything for basic care to keep (Service Members) boots on ground,” said Chapman. Although only tasked with medi cal support during the deployment, when Chapman wasn’t engaged in the aid station, he worked to earn his fellow Airmen’s trust and con fidence by supporting any mission he could.“One of the best things about my job is of course we're out there to be to be their medical support, but we get to work with so many other entities and really just any (military occupational specialty) throughout any military branch,” explained Chapman. “So, I got to go out there and load aircraft, put pallets together and just anything required.”Chapman explains it’s part of a bigger drive in the Air Force to develop Multi-capable Airmen, Airmen who are trained in tasks outside of their primary specialty in order to reduce the overall person nel Despitefootprint.the short notice for deployment, Chapman’s expertise and commitment to the mission earned praise from superiors and peers.“If you're ready, you're ready. If you have to get ready, that's a prob lem,” said Chapman. “The only downside with something like this is of course family but my wife has always been my rock. She's used to this.”Deployments and new assign ments aren’t new for the father of two, who has also deployed to Afghanistan and in support of the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, a government agency tasked with searching and account ing for missing uniformed person nel from past conflicts. However, when Chapman was transferred to the LDRP, then Labor and Delivery Unit, about a year ago, he did not foresee a wave of Afghan women needing medical attention follow ing the hospital’s involvement in Operation Allies Refuge / Welcome (OAR/OAW). Now the top enlisted at LRMC’s LDRP, Chapman states the different missions and assignments have helped develop him into a leader, now focused on the emerg ing workforce under him. “It's been it's been a fun change, it's a very unique mission (at LDRP),” explains Chapman, who is no stranger to trauma response. “I’m an IDMT by trade, so trauma, trauma, trauma is what I'm trained for. But the (women’s health) mission that took place during (Operation Allies Refuge), no one saw that coming. We're changing our mindset, when it comes to maternal services. 435th Contingency Response Group is USAFE’s only expeditionary open-the-base force. The group provides a scalable, cross-functional, rapidly deploy able force designed to assess and open airbases and perform initial airfield operations enabling rapid standup of combat operations any where in the European Command area of responsibility. In a rapidly evolving theater, US Air Forces in Europe continues to emphasize its focus on enabling Agile Combat Employment. ACE is intended to ensure USAFE forces are ready for potential threats and contingencies by enabling forces to quickly disperse and continue to deliver air power from locations with varying levels of capacity and support. While many units are introducing the ACE concept into their training, the CRG has made it a top priority. Airmen from the CRG were the first USAFE forces to mobilize in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, swiftly setting up an aerial port of debarkation in Poland. “After the invasion, you can imagine the massive amount of airflow that would commence, but even our most experienced Airmen could not have anticipated the level of airflow we were about to receive,” Gonzalez said. “Maintainers were off-loading planes, security forces were helping marshal aircraft and porters were building tents. Cadet Daisy Deane from Littleton, Colorado received a one-of-a-kind experience while training with 66th Transportation Company, 39th Transportation Battalion, 16th Sustainment Brigade. “I am very grateful for this experience, especially getting to come to Germany, not a lot of Cadets get to do that,” said Deane. Like Deane, most of the Cadet’s with 21st TSC completed their training on Aug. 1, 2022 and will commission after the school year ends in May 2023.

Stories like that show how Chaplains who are integrated with the units are truly there for the Soldiers to help them connect to God, and God to them. Soldiers not only go to Chaplains for religious help, but for all needs. “I feel that we celebrate the Chaplain Corps because they have been there from the begin ning,” said Staff Sgt. Requie Ivan San Pablo, senior vehicle driver for the commanding general and command team at the 21st TSC. “They’re always checking up on Soldiers, families and the organi zation as a whole to make sure that you’re in a good condition and to make sure that the mission gets accomplished.”SanPablo, like many Soldiers, had experiences with Chaplains in his time of need and they have always been there to have his back. “One time for some odd reason I felt really down and wasn’t in a good head space,” said San Pablo. “The Chaplain at the time asked me the simple question of ‘How are you doing?’ and it allowed me to let out what I was feeling inside, and it made me feel more comfortable and helped the stress go away.” Today, the Army has roughly 1,300 active-duty Chaplains and 1,200 in its Reserve components who represent five major faith groups — Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, Muslim and Buddhist — and more than 120 denominations, which gives Soldiers of all religions that choice of Chaplain to talk to. “We've had Chaplains assigned down to the units for 247 years,” said Trotter. “It all started with General George Washington. He said, ‘We want a Chaplain in every regiment.’ So think about that for a second. We have Chaplains assigned to every unit, not like some of the other branches where they're actu ally assigned to a chapel and you have to go there to see them. In the Army, Chaplains are assigned to an actual unit and so you're going to see Chaplains at every formation at every echelon assigned there.” Soldiers like San Pablo have chaplaincy resources available to utilize when needed. According to Trotter, Chaplains want to help, to be there for their Soldiers and to be of service to those in need. The 21st Theater Sustainment Command Chaplains hosted the U.S. Army Chaplain Corps Anniversary Fun Run ‘22 to celebrate and honor the 247th birthday of the Chaplain Corps, July 29 on Vogelweh Air Base. The Chaplain Corps was founded in 1775, before the United States declared independence as the Continental Army was being formed. In comparison to our country, the Chaplain Corps is older than the United States. In every war America has been involved in, the Chaplain Corps has been there helping Soldiers in many different“We’dways.like to say we care for the soul of the Army, for Soldiers and their family members,” said U.S. Army Col. Stanton Trotter, com mand chaplain of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command. “We’re constantly investing our time to take care of those who need it.” Trotter, who helped organize the Chaplain Fun Run, said it was put together to honor those Chaplains who have had such a positive effect on their Soldiers and units. “When I was a captain stationed at Fort Drum, New York, during the winter, my religious affairs noncommissioned officer and I decided to go on a road march with the Soldiers around four in the morn ing,” said Trotter. “We linked up with the next group that's coming through, and it's pitch black, and they say, ‘Hey, who is that?’ And I responded with, ‘I'm here to spend some time with you guys,' and the Soldier just said, ‘Wow, it's great to see that God showed up.'”

While last month’s Supreme Court opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization means each state now makes its own laws regarding abortion ser vices, the health care that the Defense Department provides to service members has not changed, the undersecretary of defense for personnel and readiness said. “Service members can receive the same reproductive health care after Dobbs as they did before the ruling,” Gil Cisneros testified today before the House Armed Services Committee. “Consistent with longexisting federal law, ‘covered abor tions’ — those cases that involve rape, incest or where the life of the mother would be endangered — will continue to be authorized to use federal funds and facilities. There is no interruption to this care.”Travel policies related to health care also remain, Cisneros said. If a service member must travel to obtain a covered abortion, she may do so on official status and will not be charged leave. While the department will con tinue to be able to provide to ser vice members the same level of health care it has always provided, Cisneros said the department is aware that the Dobbs decision will change available options for some service members when it comes to abortions that are not covered under department policy. Based on laws that may be in effect in the state where a service member is stationed, abortion services may not be “Serviceavailable.members are now hav ing to navigate additional chal lenges to access essential wom en’s health care services,” he said. “Service members and their families, who were previously able to make very personal decisions about when to have a family, may now face greater burdens depend ing on where they’re stationed.” Cisneros told lawmakers that the DOD continues to review its personnel and medical polices as a result of the Dobbs decision. “We understand the very per sonal nature of how the court deci sion impacts families,” he said. “We are being very deliberate in ana lyzing Dobbs with both focus and compassion. We want to make sure we get this right because it impacts access to essential women’s health care and reproductive care.”

Another aspect of reproductive health care that lawmakers were interested in concerned the availability of contraception within the military health care system. Seileen Mullen, the acting secretary of defense for health affairs, testified that until recently DOD had contraceptive clinics set up at 18 military treatment facilities across the department. Now, she said, the plan is to have those clinics at all military treatment facilities across the department.“Wehave expanded where we have military treatment contra ceptive clinics — walk-in clin ics,” she said. “A woman or man could come up, get counseling, and decide what contraceptives they need that Cisnerosday.”said the department is changing policy on one form of contraception in particular — the intrauterine device, or IUD — to make it available to more service members.“Weare currently updating our policies so that service members and their families will be able to receive those IUDs through the TRICARE health care system with out having to pay a copay, which is currently the thing right now,” he said. “We’re changing our policy, updating it, so that the copay will be eliminated with that.” Mullen also told lawmak ers that the department will soon release results of a survey on wom en’s reproductive health conducted by the RAND Corporation, which reveals a lack of knowledge among service members regarding contra ceptive options. “It’s the first time that has been done in 30 years,” Mullen said. “It’s given us quite a bit of information ... includ[ing that there’s] a lack of education about women’s options around contraceptives, which are free in our MTFs. All active-duty service members get free contra ceptives within the MTFs and in our retail pharmacies.” Right now, Mullen said, there is a small copay for active-duty service members to get contra ceptives, but congressional legisla tion might change that — making contraception totally free to service members and their families.
“We also ... have an app called ‘Decide and Be Ready’ that men and women can use to go through their contraceptive options to decide what’s best for them,” she said. “We also have those walk-in clinics that are ... being expanded this year, as well. But ... it’s sort of astonishing how our young men and women really don’t fully know of what their reproductive rights and health care consists of, and we need to do a better job.” Germany (0)6371

Members of the Air Force Cycling Team ride to Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, to start the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa at Sioux City, Iowa, July 24. The AFCT rides RAGBRAI as their premier event each year.
Members of the Air Force team come from all over the world and are part of the active-duty Air Force, Air Force Reserve, Air National Guard and Space Force. The team also includes family members as well as retirees. Air Force cyclers have a rich history of acting as the “Guardian Angels of the road,” where they are known to provide aid to other riders with equipment issues and assist with injuries. Air Force Cycling Team Chief Marketing Officer Drew Patterson explained that the team is riding in their 27th RAGBRAI event this year. “We promote fitness, cycling, and being out in the community,” Patterson said. As part of their tradition on the first day, as the sun rose, the team formed up and paraded out of town. According to Patterson, members of the team typically ride about 10 hours each day before tenting at each evening stop in the hostForcities.Air Force Cycling Team member, Maj. Sara McDowell, RAGBRAI serves as a kind of home coming. The Cedar Rapids native is a mental health provider for Headquarters Air Force and is a regional team lead for the AFCT. McDowell explained how AFCT members greet and hand out swag to community members along the route.McDowell said a big part of the experience for team members is that they interact and connect, forming bonds through comradery towards their common purpose. “Airmen want to connect together,” McDowell said. McDowell said wearing the Air Force wings on their cycling uni form is a great way for partici pating Airmen to come together while serving the community. Even though McDowell is a native Iowan, she said she had not participated in RAGBRAI until joining the activeduty Air Force. Now, she is back for her fourth year. The first day of RAGBRAI this year is themed after the Air Force’s 75th anniversary, and many cyclists could be seen wearing patriotic colors and Air ForcePattersonclothing.explained that on the final day of riding, the Air Force team plans to meet two miles out from Lansing, which is the last town on the ride. As part of their tradition the team plans to parade into town on their bicy cles, marking an unofficial end for First-timeRAGBRAI. AFCT rider and RAGBRAI newcomer Col. Jeffrey Pixley, commander of the 737th Training Group at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas, said he was looking forward to the com munity interaction this week. “Having a very public face of the Air Force out there,” Pixley said, “not just out there in the form of commercials, but regular people from across the different AFSCs, officers and enlisted representing the Air “They’reForce.”helping the commu nity by putting service-before-self, literally on display as they ride through RAGBRAI and help people out,” he explained. AFCT organizers say they are open to all ranks in the Air Force and Space Force, as well as retirees, Air Force civilian service workers, and family members of Air Force service members. The Air Force Cycling team is riding again in the 2022 Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa or RAGBRAI. The trip is a week-long recreational touring bicycle ride that takes cyclists from the Missouri river in the west to the Mississippi in the east. The Air Force Cycling team made their way to Sioux City where the Iowa Air National Guard’s 185th Air Refueling Wing played host to the team for the first night of theAccordingevent. to Trey Munn, execu tive director of the cycling team, this year they have 105 riders along with 15 support members. The group of cyclists are joining over 15,000 other riders from around the globe during the weeklong event.This year, RAGBRAI has rid ers on a northern route that cov ers nearly 462 miles beginning in Sergeant Bluff in the west and end ing at Lansing in the east. Riders make nightly stops in Ida Grove, Pocahontas, Emmetsburg, Mason City, Charles City, and West Union, swelling their populations by sev eral thousand for a giant overnight rolling block party each evening. Munn has been a part of the Air Force Cycling team for seven years and expressed how he returns each year because of the positive experience.“It’safantastic way to talk about the Air Force,” Munn said. “To talk about where you come from, and to just find common connections with the people of Iowa.”

Delft If you’re spending a few days in Rotterdam, consider a day trip to Delft. Home to Jan Vermeer, famous pottery, solid restaurants, and lovely canals, Delft is an archetypal classic Dutch village that serves as a fine stylistic and cultural contrast to Rotterdam. Plus, it is easily accessible by train from Rotterdam. Make sure you look out for local cyclists, though. They’re everywhere, and they’re faster than you think. Getting there By car, Rotterdam is 5 hours from Kaiserslautern, 4.5 hours from Wiesbaden, and 7 hours from Stuttgart. For train options, check with Deutsche Bahn.

The Baumholder Arts and Crafts Center, Bldg. 8104 on Smith Barracks, has a “Resiliency through Art” program every Monday at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. The next one is Monday, Aug. 15. Cost is $5. Each session is about 1.5 hours. Art is a wonderful creative outlet for expression and can provide a great relief for anyone.
