KMC steps up, supports AF family by Senior Airman Larissa Greatwood 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs An order to depart Turkey was given to U.S. military family members March 29 due to security concerns, which led many people through Ramstein. Through this transition, members of the KMC have stepped in to provide support to fellow military families in their time of need. Various agencies in the community offered temporary lodging, transportation, medical care, child care, school enrollment and other essentials needed. “There are a lot of great things going on here,” said Michele Dresel, Airman and Family Readiness Center director. “Through other similar hard times, we’ve learned what small details may be overlooked, and we’ve been able to learn from that and make improvements for this situation to ensure we don’t miss anything.

Lt. Gen. Timothy M. Ray, 3rd Air Force commander, welcomes the first group of Air Force families to Ramstein after the ordered departure of dependents of service members and Department of Defense civilian personnel currently stationed in Turkey March 30. The removal of dependents is to ensure the safety and security of military families. The decision was intended to mitigate the risk to DOD elements and personnel, including family members, within the authorities and means of the command, while ensuring the combat effectiveness of U.S. forces and mission support to operations in Turkey.

“The families have each been assigned their own first sergeant to assist with anything they could possibly need, and we’re working side

by side with him,” Dresel continued. “He assigned each family a sponsor to help them along the way to ensure the smoothest transition possible.”

Units came together to provide resources to families in order to make them as comfortable and stress-free as possible.

“We’re taking care of the families by enabling and facilitating base access,” said Staff Sgt. Bethany Wright, 86th Security Forces Squadron reports and analysis NCO. “By doing this, we’re alleviating the added stress of checking in every time they want to come back on base.” Team Ramstein has been working tirelessly all week to refine processes and come together as an Air Force family during this time of need. “It’s spectacular how, once the word got out that families were (ordered to leave) Turkey, people have stepped up in droves,” said Brig. Gen. Jon T. Thomas, 86th Airlift Wing commander. “It’s been individuals; it’s been organizations. The commissary stayed open late so families could do a little shopping before going to their temporary lodging facilities. It’s all across the community here, how generous and warmhearted people, Airmen and Soldiers have been, and that’s exactly what we would hope for.”

Defense employees the ability to complete official travel in support of missions by granting them access to allotted money. In addition to granting DOD employees access to necessary funding, utilizing and requiring the use of the GTCC allows agency program coordinators to view and track charges as they are made on accounts. “This is particularly useful when members do not have access (to moni-

tor their accounts),” Smith said. Unless otherwise exempt, all DOD personnel are required to use the GTCC for all authorized expenses related to official government travel, which includes permanent changes of station and temporary duty assignments. Not only does this allow APCs to track charges made by individual See GTCC, Page 3

To generate and employ air mobility, enable theater and strategic airpower, and operate key Air Force power projection platforms, the 86th Airlift Wing often has to send Airmen to various locations throughout Europe. With that travel, Airmen are often tasked to manage some aspect of the funding. But what happens when an

Airman doesn’t have the funding in place? That’s where the Government Travel Charge Card program comes into play. “Many new Airmen and civilians do not have credit when entering the Air Force, and this program aids in that respect,” said 2nd Lt. Helen Smith, 86th Comptroller Squadron Financial Services flight commander. The GTCC program provides both military and civilian Department of

76th AS families welcome home teammates

76th Airlift Squadron Airmen and family members welcome redeployers back from Afghanistan March 15 on Ramstein. Ten Airmen from the 76th AS were deployed for nearly three months.

Members of the 76th Airlift Squadron and their families welcomed home their co-workers from a nearly three-month deployment to Afghanistan March 15 on Ramstein. The 76th AS is responsible for providing support six months out of the year through executive airlift and aeromedical evacuation. “We used to do this for two to four months,” said Lt. Col. Daniel Mangan, 76th AS commander. “Now it’s six, and we split it up. The group that came back on the 15th was there (for nearly three months), and that aircraft turned right back around with more troops to finish out the deployment commitment. “We send one aircraft out there to support a very unique mission,” Mangan continued. “They’re operating in a niche that no one else in the Air Force really does. They’re quiet professionals. They’re the best in the business, so it was neat to welcome them home with their families.” The 76th AS Airmen and family members greeted the teammates as they deplaned. Spouses, children,

friends and co-workers welcomed the returnees home and thanked them for their commitment, sacrifice and dedication to the mission. “I think it’s incredibly important to let our Airmen know that when we deploy them downrange to a combat environment, we’re sending them to a place that is inherently dangerous, and there’s risk,” Mangan said. “They’re separated from us and their families. When they come back, having been exposed to that environment, we want to embrace, thank and welcome them home.” Though a few months may not seem like a long time, it made a noticeable difference for Maj. Thomas Chapman, 76th AS chief of training, when seeing his 4-month-old daughter again. “My daughter is young enough that she won’t remember, but for me to see her again was really great,” Chapman said. “When I left, she was a lot smaller and less aware, so it was amazing to see how much she has grown. I was happy to see how healthy she is and how well my wife has been taking care of her. I haven’t had a homecoming with a child yet, so it was a completely new experience. “We didn’t really think about the

welcome home, so to see our squadron there surprised us all,” Chapman continued. “It was exciting to see everyone. It was a wonderful welcome home, and it’s great to be back with our squadron and back in our families’ arms.”

Simulating worst to do our best by Airman 1st Class Lane Plummer 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

Emergency lights illuminate in the cockpit, signaling an engine fire. The pilot knows that if he doesn’t react quickly enough, he could lose that engine midflight. The Ramstein C-130J Super Hercules continues to sway from the turbulence caused by the surrounding thunderous weather and dark skies. Feet behind sits the figure of someone who is collected, pulling the strings over the entire scenario. From the stormy weather to the violently swaying cabin, a perfect storm is being created from a laptop perched inside the dark cockpit, helmed by Maj. Brandon Cowell, 86th Operations Support Squadron C-130J simulator site manager and pilot. “With the press of a button, this pilot’s number four engine is on fire,” Cowell said. “You can’t go out and set GTCC, from Page 1

account holders but it also allows them to monitor the accounts for repayment. “Cardholders are required to submit travel vouchers within five business days of completion of travel and use split disbursement to pay all expenses charged to the card directly to the travel-card vendor,” Smith said. This means cardholders must file for reimbursement of travel expenses, including lodging and commercial travel, they charged to their card. It’s important to note that food is not accounted for under travel expenses but under per diem expenses. Cardholders are meant to pay the card vendor directly by the due date located on the monthly billing statement issued by the vendor, regardless of the status of the reimbursement. But what happens when the GTCC isn’t paid by the due date? “Accounts are considered past due at 30 days past billing and delinquent if unpaid 61 days after the billing date,” Smith said. “Late fees are applied at 75 days past billing and at every 30-day increment or billing cycle there-

an engine on fire for someone to learn how to put it out. It’s training for that mishap or that emergency that is the most important part of this simulator.” Cowell’s job for the past eight years has been training pilots and loadmasters on how to handle scenarios they’ve never been in before or who require a renewal for their licenses. Why throw these pilots through the worst possible circumstances? Because, according to Cowell, it’s what helps them grow. “This environment allows students to come and show us what they know and then let us take them to another level,” Cowell said. “I want to train students for the worst to turn them into the best.” Training them to become the best pilots they can be is one of the goals that Cowell must meet as the site manager of the simulator. According to him, one of the most difficult aspects of maintaining the C-130J simulator is keeping scenarios realistic for his students.

after until the delinquency amount is paid in full.” If an account reaches 126 days past billing, it becomes eligible for salary offset, which is the collection of any amount the cardholder owes to the travel-card vendor as a result of undisputed delinquencies. Upon written request from the vendor, the Defense Finance and Accounting Service will begin the process of salary offset. “Cardholders whose accounts become delinquent may be subject to disciplinary or administrative action,” Smith warned. “Also, salary offset fees are nonreimbursable.” On average, the 86th AW has approximately 60 accounts in a delinquent status, with nearly $62,000 being owed quarterly. The GTCC program isn’t all gloom and doom, however. For cardholders in long-term travel status, traveling for more than 45 days, they can file interim vouchers every 30 days in order to receive partial payments and use split disbursement to ensure their accounts avoid delinquency. For individuals who are on travel orders that prevent them from filing interim vouchers,

“It’s hard to provide an effective training environment for students if the environment isn’t realistic,” Cowell said. “It’d be a joke to them. This (simulator) is no joke. The sounds you hear, the engine noise, everything is replicated in there.” However, it’s well worth it in the end, Cowell says. “It’s really fun to see people actually immerse themselves in the plane,” Cowell said. “That’s when it makes it easy to teach. When they begin to have fun, they begin to learn.” One pilot who has trained in the simulator, Maj. Alex Adams, 86th Operations Group standardization and evaluations chief and evaluator pilot, saw firsthand how realistic the experience can be. “The graphics are the best I’ve seen,” Adams said. “I (could) see my house and other buildings in my local village. You can fly a night vision goggle profile, and it feels like you are actually conducting night operations.” Part of the reason Cowell puts so

APCs can place them on mission critical status before the account is 61 days past the billing and suspended. Once the cardholder’s account is removed from mission critical status, they have 45 days to pay the balance. When cardholders stay on top of their accounts to ensure they don’t enter delinquency status, both the members and the DOD receive benefits. “When they keep the account from being delinquent, there are no late fees for the cardholder,” Smith said. “Also, the DOD receives a rebate for use and timely payment of the travel card.” There are two types of rebates available from travel vendors: sales and productivity. Sales rebates are based on charge volume, or how much the GTCCs are used. Productivity rebates are based on payment timeliness. “Since October 2015, Ramstein has received $72,882 toward operations and maintenance funds,” Smith said. So it stands to reason, the fewer accounts in a delinquent status, the larger the rebates the 86th AW receives and the more money that can be directed toward operations and maintenance.

much effort into immersing his students is because he, too, was a pilot. In the Air Force Reserve for 13 years, Cowell is passionate about flying, whether it’s in the cockpit of a real C-130J or a re-created one in a simulator. His passion helps to educate waves of Airmen who will continue flying for years, and he does so knowing just how important he and his instructors’ roles are. “If we’re busy, we’re training people, and if we’re training people, we’re making the Air Force a little safer,” Cowell said. Now that pilots no longer have to fly to the U.S. to train on simulators, U.S. Air Forces in Europe saves approximately $250,000 a year. Yet, Cowell believes it saves something more valuable. “You can share the amount of money this sim saves for days, but at the end of the day, you can’t put a number on how many lives are saved by pilots getting this type of training.”

Smith encourages cardholders to read DOD Instruction 5154.31, Volume 4, “Government Travel Charge Card.” So maybe next time an

Airman has a mission supporting an ally or generating airpower in another country, they know the government has their financial back as long as it’s mutual.

There will be battery checks, brake tests, brake-fluid tests, air conditioning system-function tests, cooling-system and antifreeze checks, alternator-function tests, visual tire inspections and shock-absorber checks.

The USO will permanently close its center at the Frankfurt International Airport Thursday due to several operational factors. Over the past three years, the center has seen a decline in the number of visitors utilizing the facility, as a result of the shift of arriving military personnel and their families from Frankfurt to Ramstein. The location now primarily serves as a spot for visitors to wait for commercial shuttles to local installations. Additionally, force protection and security concerns coupled with limited and costly options to reduce risk contributed to the decision.

Allied medics claim badge of honor Story and photo by Capt. Jeku Arce 30th Medical Brigade Public Affairs Twenty-three allied candidates earned the prestigious Expert Field Medical Badge after a week of grueling testing conducted by U.S. Army Europe and 421st Medical Battalion personnel March 24 in Baumholder. Candidates who earned the badge came from the 21st Theater Sustainment Command’s 21st Special Troops Battalion, 16th Sustainment Brigade, 30th Medical Brigade and 18th Military Brigade as well as the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command, Regional Health Command — Europe, 2nd Calvary Regiment and the Danish army’s 2nd Medical Company. The spring 2016 EFMB event began “standardization week” with 193 candidates. After four days of rigorous testing, 28 candidates stepped off the starting line of the 12-mile ruck march. Twenty-three candidates crossed the finish line in time to earn their badge. Command Sgt. Major Sheryl D.

Col. William Stubbs, 30th Medical Brigade commander, cheers on Soliders during a 12-mile ruck march that was part of the U.S. Army Europe Expert Field Medical Badge event March 24 at Baumholder.

Lyon, U.S. Army Europe senior enlisted leader, thanked the cadre who supported the EFMB and praised the candidates for their hard work and achievements during an awards ceremony held after the last event. “Each and every one of you are winners,” Lyon said. Special recognition went to several candidates for their unique achievements. Capt. Diana Rommelfanger of LRMC scored 95 percent on the written test, the highest overall score

among the 193 candidates. Pfc. Ralph Fontanez of the 173rd ABCT received the most “GO’s” in the competition, exceeding the standard for required tasks per combat testing lane among his peers. Spc. Marco Fonseca of the 173rd ABCT was recognized not only for earning the prestigious badge but for being the first among the 28 candidates to cross the finish line after completing the required 12-mile ruck march, with a time of 2 hours, 23 minutes.

Fonseca attributes his success largely to the support of a strong senior medic. He recommended future EFMB candidates also enlist a strong mentor. “Study, study, study, and don’t quit,” Fonseca said, offering additional advice for aspiring EFMB candidates. Soldiers and family members came to hold up encouraging signs, cheer and even pace their EFMB candidate during the culminating march. Others followed the event via various social media platforms, such as Snapchat, Instagram and Facebook. Organization communicators featured highlights of the ruck march and the awards ceremony in their products, allowing Soldiers, family members and the candidates’ units to follow the action as it occurred. Candidates who participated received training that is not normally part of their country’s military training during standardization. Each NATO candidate who earns the EFMB becomes a subject matter expert available to their country’s military to help prepare the next batch of candidates for success. Competition officials said they conduct the USAREUR EFMB biannually. Allies are cordially invited to participate, they added.

sonal and professional goals. “The purpose of the training is to take the best of what there is to offer and bring it to the leaders for their professional development to, in turn, help Airmen in the best ways possible,” Erzen said.

86th Airlift Wing leaders participate in a hands-on activity during a Core Values Coaching workshop March 21 on Ramstein. CVC training is primarily taught to cadets at the Air Force Academy and has been nationally recognized and honored with the 2013 Jon C. Dalton Best Practices in College Student Values award.

“It’s important to empower our Airmen and help them along the way but also for them to learn the skills themselves.” According to Erzen, the training not only teaches leaders how to talk with their Airmen but it also teaches the leaders how to become better Airmen themselves. “One of the really cool things about this training is the communication skills we teach that help make all bonds stronger. Whether it’s co-workers, supervisors or leaders, Airmen to Airmen become more aware of how to communicate with one another to make those bonds stronger,” Erzen said. Jan Devitt, 86th AW community support coordinator and the individual who coordinated Erzen’s visit, said the training far exceeded her expectations. “After going through the

training, I can now see how vital it is,” Devitt said. “I think it’s good to be reminded that no matter where we are or what we’re doing, someone always sees. Sometimes it’s easy to forget the importance of core values, so this was a good reminder to not only live by them but set the example for others.” Whether a person is a coach or being coached, everyone involved was able to benefit from the training, Devitt added. “As part of the training, we had to pick from a list of virtues that we wanted to change about ourselves,” Devitt said. “I had such an awesome partner that, in the beginning, I came up with a virtue and he was able to get me to realize the issue was really something else.” With the training reaching the operational Air Force population, the lessons learned

can be put into use when it comes to improving communication and the overall Ramstein mission. “I hope this training gives the Airmen at Ramstein the unique opportunity to take skills they already have and harness them in a very purposeful way to help their fellow Airmen grow and develop,” Erzen said. “The intent is for Ramstein to continue to lead the fight and move forward in a very empowering way and enhance the things they’re already doing to keep in alignment with the core values.” With the training the leaders received, they now have the tools to teach their Airmen and peers the importance of communication, empathy and support for each other. By strengthening these bonds, Airmen can focus on the mission to the best of their abilities.

Traffic flow to improve in commissary parking lot Courtesy of the 86th Civil Engineer Squadron In an effort to continue to improve Ramstein’s traffic flow and reduce unnecessary congestion, construction at the Ramstein Commissary is scheduled to start Monday. The project will widen the exit on the northwest side of the parking lot, closest to the Department of Defense Dependents Schools’ buildings, to allow it to handle two-way traffic.

Additionally, the island on the northeast side of the lot will be reduced to allow two-way traffic in the eastern part of the lot as well. The effect of these changes is intended to significantly reduce the mixture of foot and vehicular traffic at the main entrance of the commissary. The current layout of the parking lot routes almost all traffic — up to 250 vehicles per hour at peak times — through the bottleneck at the front of the store prior to being able to exit.

This causes a significant opportunity for accidents between pedestrians and drivers. With the new flow, only those who have a need to drive through this area will cross it, instead of drivers who are just trying to find their way out of the lot. It will also make the spots to the northwest more feasible since you can enter and exit from there without driving through the rest of the lot. This construction is expected to take about a week and will be fol-

lowed by remarking the pavement and changing signage, which engineers will do at night to minimize disruption. Be patient, pay extra attention and watch your speed as the traffic flow changes. As with the recent shoppette changes, the goal for 2016 is to improve vehicle and pedestrian flow across Ramstein to increase safety today and prepare for future increases in volume.

TLSC-E and USAREUR partner to demilitarize, sell ammunition residue Story and photos by Greg Jones 21st Theater Sustainment Command Public Affairs The Theater Logistics Support Center’s U.S. Army Ammunition Center Europe, working with NATO and several other agencies, completed the first sale of demilitarized small arms ammunition residue, consisting primarily of spent small arms cartridges, in a program that is expected to recoup $5 million or $6 million over the first few years and roughly $500,000 each year thereafter. This sale, consisting of roughly 254 tons of shredded brass from spent bullet casings, marks the first big step in a cooperative effort between ACE, U.S. Army Europe, U.S. Army’s Product Manager — Demilitarization, and NATO Support and Procurement Agency. Under this program, ACE receives a variety of small arms ammunition casings not

Employees at U.S. Army Ammunition Center Europe, sort through small arms ammunition residue, which will then be shredded and rendered into material deemed safe for resale on the European commodities market. deemed as safe, made mostly of brass but also consisting of some steel and other metals. ACE visually inspects all material for live rounds and then shreds the casings to produce what is called “material deemed as safe.” The result is shredded metal that is no longer considered a hazard-

ous material and can be sold to interested parties on the European market. The small chips of brass look a little like gold, and while not as valuable, they are traded internationally as a commodity, much like gold or silver. More importantly, according to James Lane, 21st TSC’s

theater demilitarization manager, disposing of the brass in this manner helps to ensure environmental safety. “We have to dispose of the ammunition somehow,” Lane said. “This way, we’re making sure that we don’t have live rounds ending up in a land fill or, worse yet, in

someone’s back yard.” The proper disposal of ammunition residue is carefully and stringently controlled by federal and international regulatory agencies, according to Hugh Murray, U.S. Army Europe senior ammunition manager, who also explained that other options for disposing of the ammunition can be much more labor intensive and do not recoup money like this project does. “There are other ways to dispose of the brass, but the restrictions make it nearly impossible to certify the large stockpiles that have accumulated,” Murray said. “With this, we’re able to receive shipments that may even contain live rounds and render them safe.” One of the biggest challenges to other methods is the need to completely remove all live rounds from the brass and to perfectly sort the brass by See ammunition, Page 11

The end product of a joint venture of U.S. Army Ammunition Center Europe, Product Manager — Demilitarization, U.S. Army Europe, and NATO Support and Procurement Agency is small shredded brass nuggets. caliber and ammunition type. The turn-in of brass through more traditional channels requires a zero-error process for sorting ammo and removing live rounds, which often requires an impossibly laborintensive operation. “You could have a whole battalion of Soldiers at the range for hours sorting through shipments round by round, and you might still end up with live rounds or mixed ammunition,” said HansJuergen Becker, ACE deputy director. “A commander doesn’t have time to do that. He’s got a mission to accomplish, so we simply take the brass from him and figure it out ourselves.” To accommodate a more efficient process for those line-unit commanders to turn in their ammunition residue, ACE accepted much of it in relatively unsorted condition. This left ACE with a stockpile of brass that couldn’t be turned in through traditional methods. Then ACE, in conjunction with USAREUR, reached out to Product Manager — Demilitarization. PM-D provides oversight of the demilitarization and disposal of ammunition and provides for funding, equipment and other resources to accomplish this function. Working with the PM-D, ACE makes the demilitarized ammunition available to various markets as 30/70 brass, and the money recouped goes back to the U.S. government under the demilitariza-

tion Resource, Recovery, and Recycling reinvestment program in accordance with federal law. Of the funds recouped in these sales, 60 percent of all funds are retained by PM-D for re-use in other demilitarization efforts throughout the Army, and up to 40 percent of the funds can be returned to ACE to further fund the ongoing R3 demilitarization projects there. Funds can be used for equipment, maintenance and even to pay salaries for workers to execute the R3 demilitarization missions. Of course, to sell the demilitarized brass and recoup any of these funds, ACE had to find a buyer. That’s where NATO came in. Under existing cooperative agreements, NATO Support and Procurement Agency handled the international bidding process and found buyers for the brass. The process of finding a buyer and executing the sale is heavily regulated to prevent fraud waste and abuse, and it’s a process that requires significant expertise. The NSPA’s help in navigating this process can’t be overstated, according to Murray, who as USAREUR’s senior ammunition manager is the central point of contact between the USAREUR and NSPA on this project. “It’s amazing what NSPA does for us,” Murray said. “Essentially, they find a buyer, execute the transaction and send the check directly to PM-D, and we’re really glad they’re helping us with that part of this process.” German cooking classes in a relaxed home environment! What does ‘drinking responsibly’ mean? Courtesy of Ramstein Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and Treatment Clinic Have you ever ordered a glass of wine, beer or a shot of liquor and when it arrived, thought, “that’s it? The likely reason is because most restaurants measure their drinks, but when we pour our own drinks, we often overestimate what a standard drink size actually is. In the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and Treatment clinic, we have a “Pour Me a Drink kit that we use to help people accurately measure their own drinks. Initially, almost every person who participates in this activity pours more than the standard measurement.

In Germany, drinks are measured in liter portions, so a half liter of beer is actually 16.9 ounces while a standard beer is measured at 12 ounces. All drinks are not created equal, but thankfully there is an equation you can use to determine how many standard drinks you consume. To calculate drink equivalents, multiply the volume in ounces by the alcohol content in the percentage and divide by 0.6 ounces of alcohol per drink. For example, the drink equivalent for 16 fluid ounces of beer at 6 percent alcohol is calculated by multiplying 16 by 0.06 and dividing that 0.6, which results in 1.6 standard drinks. Moderate alcohol use is defined by the Dietary

Guidelines for Americans as up to one standard-size drink per day for women and up to two standard-size drinks per day for men and only by adults of legal age. To ensure that you stay within or below these parameters, it is important that you are aware of what a standard drink size is and what it looks like. Some wine and beer glasses come with an etched line that shows you where to stop pouring in order to stay within these limits. You can also measure your drinks by using a Solo Cup. The measurements are not exact but the cup gives you a general idea of where to stop pouring. In comparison to low or moderate alcohol consumption, high-risk drinking involves four or more drinks a day or eight or more drinks per week for women and five or more drinks a day or 15 or more drinks per week for men. Excessive drinking increases the risk of many chronic diseases and violence. Individuals should not

consume any alcohol if they are or may become pregnant, taking certain overthe-counter or prescription medications, or those who are recovering from alcoholism or are unable to control the amount they drink. Additionally, mixing alcohol and caffeine is not recommended because it often leads to drinking more alcohol, becoming more intoxicated than you realize and increasing the risk of alcohol-related adverse events. The benefits of moderate versus extreme alcohol use are vast, including better health and reduced risky behaviors. The choice of whether or not to drink is yours. Many people in the military choose to drink in moderation or do not drink at all. For example, a survey collected with 30,000 service members found that members under 25 tend to use moderation and make good decisions concerning alcohol use. If you decide to drink responsibly that means: • Never drinking and driving. Drinking alco-

People will sometimes decide to drive after having a couple drinks and then get arrested with a blood alcohol content of 0.06 because they feel buzzed but not drunk. • Having a safe transportation plan and never getting in a car with a drunk driver. • Having multiple backup plans in case your initial plan fails. • Eating before you drink. • Alternating alcoholic beverages with water or soda. • Identifying the number of drinks you will have in advance and stopping at that point. • Knowing the early signs of being intoxicated — mild speech, memory, attention, coordination or balance impairments — and stop drinking when you feel any of them. • Being supportive of your friends who choose not to drink. Visitors of the blossom fest in Freinsheim can enjoy walks through the Baroque garden Saturday and Sunday.

by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The wine-growing community of Freinsheim will celebrate its annual blossom fest from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The town will present the new season’s wines, and visitors have the opportunity to talk to vintners. The local tourist information office I-Punkt Freinsheim and participating vineries will sell wine passes for €12. This pass will authorize visitors to taste 20 wines in little tasting glasses on both days. Wine Princess Anne II and a local band will officially open the fest at 11:30 a.m. on both days at the historical town hall. Experienced cellar masters and hiking guides will take visitors through the various vineyards and inform them about the different wine grapes. The two-hour tours will begin at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. near the town hall. The fest costs €10 and includes a wine tasting with a little snack offered in the vineyard. Additionally, a wine shuttle will make stops in the vineyards throughout both days. Wagon rides with Haflinger horses will be offered to take people on the blossom hiking path through the blooming fruit groves. They are scheduled to start at noon from Kreuzhof vinery. Surrounded by an ocean of blossoms, visitors will find a large diversity of culinary specialties, wines and art items throughout the medieval town.

Food specialties include asparagus salad with smoked salmon, pork chops with potato salad, lamb with paprika-zucchini vegetables, prime boiled beef with horseradish sauce, shrimps and oysters, Thai dishes, onion meat with mushrooms, asparagus crepes with hollandaise sauce, strawberry parfaits with berries and homemade cakes. Art galleries will display works of art , including paintings and sculptures by local artists. On Sunday, stores will open from 1 to 6 p.m. and the toy museum will exhibit a collection of old toys. The Baroque garden invites visitors to take a walk through flowers and herbs along the medieval town wall. The town wall was built in the 15th century. After the town came under the domination of the electoral palatinate in 1471, the new authorities enforced the current walls. With the iron gate, construction of the fortification came to an end in 1514. Until the beginning of the 19th century, only two gates led out of town. Besides the two town gates, the iron gate in the east and the Hain gate in the southwest, about 20 towers were put up within the wall. Today, five towers are left. It is known as one of the nicest and most complete town fortification facilities in the Pfalz. To get to Freinsheim, travel on A6 direction Mannheim, take the Gruenstadt exit and follow the signs to Kirchheim, Dackenheim and Freinsheim. For details, visit www.stadt-freinsheim.de.

50 YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THE OPENING OF MK MÖBEL

About 50 years ago, on March 25, 1961 the company KringsMaraite was founded by Albert Krings and Martha Maraite. During this time there were no showrooms available, so the furniture was displayed at the “Hünniger Saal - Johanns Terren” (an adjacent room to the family property). The furniture store expanded in 1963, 1966 and 1969. In 1963 a two-story furniture store of 4736 square feet was constructed beside the Krings-Maraite family home that had already been built in 1956. In 1966 and 1969 an additional

two-story space was added to the original building, adding 5381 square feet and 7534 square feet to the showroom space. In 1971 the store was again extended with an additional 10763 square feet. In the last great building phase in 1973 a basement was added measuring 23680 square feet. In ten years, the Krings-Maraite family extended their Showroom from 4736 square feet to 53819 square feet. On July 22, 1979, the whole store and the family house burned down to the ground (see picture below).

Only the vehicle fleet survived the fire.

Nevertheless, the Krings-Maraite family did not lose their courage and immediately started to rebuild their store. The doors of the newly rebuilt store were open for customers in just nine months after the fire. This time the store would be bigger than ever before. Over 3000 visitors celebrated the reopening of the

64583 square foot store. In 1989 a 21527 square foot storage facility was built that would allow the family to use the old storage room inside the main building as a new showcase for their customers. MK Möbel is located at the KMC Mall and Römerstrasse-Hünnigen 7, B-4780 St. Vith, Belgium (1 hour 40 minutes from Ktown) Open every day except Monday — Check out their ads in the Kaiserslautern American and Herald-Union and also the FINDIT GUIDE Kaiserslautern and Wiesbaden issues. www.mkkrings.com
