Coronet season kicks off at Morón AB Story and photos by Staff Sgt. Robert L. McIlrath 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs MORÓN AIR BASE, Spain — During World War II, aircraft were ferried by boat across the Atlantic Ocean while making multiple stops along the way, sometimes having to be partially disassembled due to distance and fuel constraints. Today, the process of moving fighter aircraft to and from overseas locations has been simplified. It is called a coronet. “Aircraft move for a variety of reasons,” said Col. William M. Wallis, 65th Air Base Group commander, Lajes Field, Portugal. “Aircraft rotate in and out of theater to avoid overuse, meet maintenance requirements and, in some cases, stay with the units to which they are assigned. If the aircraft can’t make it to a required location on its internal fuel load, tankers fly along with them and provide fuel.” Coronets typically consist of See CORONET, Page 3

by Airman 1st Class Edgar Grimaldo 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs It was a cold night in the woods of Mississippi when a young Dakota Moss patiently waited for three hours for the right moment. Next to his cousins, he scanned the horizon until it suddenly appeared! Moss quickly took aim, held his breath,

and with one motion he pulled the trigger. As the shot echoed, his mind cleared and the cheers of his cousins could be heard. He had done it, Moss had just killed his first deer. Overjoyed, he walked up to his prey and rubbed the blood on his face symbolizing his rite of passage to the hunting ranks.

After enlisting, U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Dakota Moss was given the job of laboratory technician, where he could not only continue his education in health but also educate his colleagues with the wealth of knowledge he already possessed.

U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Dakota Moss, 86th Medical Support Squadron laboratory technician, grew up in the rural town of Rayville, Mississippi, where he spent the majority of his time playing sports and hunting squirrels. As he grew up, Moss developed an interest in nature and animals and decided to pursue a degree in biology. After completing his degree, Moss enrolled in medical school where he continued his education until he decided medical school was not for him.

“After I left medical school I was looking for options,” said Moss. “That’s when my dad, a retired U.S. Army Soldier, recommended the U.S. Air Force.” After careful consideration, Moss enlisted. Joining the Air Force not only provides him with a new set of skills, but also allows him to continue his education and pursue other career choices, said Moss. He enlisted as a laboratory technician where he was given the opportunity to keep learning about careers in healthcare and

mentor his colleagues with the knowledge he already possessed. “Arriving at Ramstein, Moss not only met expectations but went above and beyond what was expected,” said Tech. Sgt. Billy Gann, 86 MSS diagnostic and therapeutic flight chief. “With his background in biology and medical school, he brings a wealth of knowledge not only benefitting newer Airmen, but myself as well.” Recently, Moss traveled to Lajes Field, Portugal, where he worked together with the 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron coordinating travel for biomedical equipment repair technicians, allowing for the calibration of 20 plus pieces of medical equipment. Additionally, Moss delivered 20 vaccinations and collected samples of 98% of overdue personnel ensuring mission readiness. Moss excels in his current career field, but he has a new goal in the crosshairs. While at Lajes, Moss ran into a couple of pilots who took interest in his aspirations in becoming a pilot. Currently, Moss is taking classes and doing the appropriate paperwork to take to the skies as a commissioned pilot. “After speaking to the pilots at Lajes, and seeing the smiles on their faces, the view from the sky and their passion for flying,I have now begun the process to become a pilot, and look forward to joining their ranks,” said Moss.

Aaron Dobizl, a deployed fuel systems operator assigned to the 22nd Logistics Readiness Squadron, McConnell Air Force Base, Kansas, ushers a fuel truck into position to refuel Royal Saudi air force F-15SA aircraft at Morón Air Base, Spain, March 23. three each month.” Because of its proximity to Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, Morón AB, which falls under the 65th ABG, is an easy choice for coronet planners as it allows them to maximize crew days traveling in either direction. “Coronets are a unique element of the U.S. military power projection capability,” said Lt. Col. Mark D. Nexon, 496th ABS commander at Morón Air Base, Spain. “I don’t think any other country in the world can move combat power to and from the United States or to other geographic combatant commands like we can.” Planning for coronets takes several months of coordination, including the need to identify airspace. Aircraft must arrive at precise coordinates and altitudes at the exact time scheduled to ensure mission success. “One coronet takes a ton of effort,” Wallis said. “This week we

actually had two coronets stacked together, plus other operational missions running at the same time. We’re working day and night to provide crews and maintainers the maximum flexibility to reduce operational risk.” U.S. allies and partners also benefit from coronet missions in support of bilateral training opportunities. Airmen at Morón AB recently supported a Coronet flight for multiple F-15SA aircraft, flown by pilots from the Royal Saudi air force. The mission transited through Morón AB while returning from Red Flag 22-2, which took place at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada, and provided aircrews the opportunity to focus on tactical integration of cutting edge airpower. “By using coronets, we can provide our allies and partners the opportunity to take advantage of exercises like Red Flag,”

Nexon said. “Some of our partners don’t just want American hardware, they want American training and expertise, that’s what the U.S. is able to deliver via our security cooperation.” Nexon also commented on the significant partnership the U.S. shares with Spain. “We have a very committed partner in the Spanish,” said Nexon. “When you work with the United States, you get a network of security cooperation partners that are committed to delivering hope and prosperity and security to the world.” As coronet season gets into full swing, the 496th ABS continues to step up support and guarantee mission completion. “This type of flexible response and readiness is one of the things that makes the U.S. military one of the most feared and awesome militaries in the world,” Nexon concluded.

TALK OF THE TOWN: City of Kaiserslautern by Gina Hutchins-Inman 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Many members of the Kaiserslautern Military Community have found temporary or even permanent homes in one of the many villages and towns surrounding Kaiserslautern or in the heart of the Palatinate Forest. Talk of the Town is a series highlighting the union communities within the County of Kaiserslautern, the City of Kaiserslautern and the Union Community of Winnweiler in neighboring Donnersberg County. The series aims to inform American service members and their families about the communities they’re joining during their time in the KMC. Each month we will feature a different community and provide facts about its history, heritage, and the local experiences it offers. Our next stop will lead us to the City of Kaiserslautern in the heart of the Palatinate Forest and the largest city in the Westpfalz Region (Western Palatinate). We invite you to discover interesting and maybe not so well known facts about your home away from home. Emperor’s Lauter The City of Kaiserslautern is divided into districts, such as Innenstadt, Grubentälchen/ Volkspark, Betzenberg,

Laemmchesberg/Uniwohnstadt, Baennjerrück/Karl-Pfaff-Siedlung, Kaiserslautern-West (including Vogelweh), Erzhuetten, Erfenbach, Einsiedlerhof, Morlautern, Erlenbach, Moelschbach, Dansenberg, Hohenecken and Siegelbach. Kaiserslautern means the “emperor’s Lauter”, derived from the Latin word “Lutra” for the stream that still flows underground in the downtown area today. The city has about 102,000 inhabitants and over 1,000 military families reside on Vogelweh housing.” People of 150 different nations make up a colorful and multinational society. Lord Mayor Dr. Klaus Weichel has been in office since 2007 and would like to extend a cordial welcome (see page 7). Spanish, Swedes, French, Croatians and Napoleon Kaiserslautern also looks upon a history of early settlements and international occupancy throughout the centuries. Earliest settlement traces date back to the 6th millennium B.C. Another prehistoric settlement, believed to be Celtic, has been traced to at least 800 B.C. During the Middle Ages Kaiserslautern became a royal residence when Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa erected a Kaiserpfalz. The Stiftskirche is the oldest church and was constructed in 12501350. King Rudolf von Habsburg chartered the town in 1276 and

St. Martin’s Church was built from 1300-1350, where a section of the original city wall can still be seen in its courtyard today. During the Thirty Year’s War (1618-1648) Spanish troops occupied the city until Swedish armies liberated the area. Later Croatian troops of the Austrian emperor seized the city and killed over 90 percent of the city’s 3,200 inhabitants. French troops then repeatedly invaded and occupied the area until it was restored as part of the Palatinate. In the 18th century French and Germans fought until the French eventually destroyed Barbarossa’s castle and the city towers. From 1793 until his defeat, Napoleon Bonaparte is said to have personally traveled the road, commonly referred to as “Kaiserstrasse” (B37/ Pariser/Mainzer Strasse), leading through Kaiserslautern from Einsiedlerhof towards Mainz. In 1815 it became part of a Bavarian province and remained so until French troops occupied it again after World War I. Studies, research and a technology hub Kaiserslautern has two universities, the Technical University and the Hochschule (University of Applied Sciences) with 20.000 students. It is also home to the Fraunhofer Experimental Software Engineering Institute, the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics, the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems

and the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence. The Adam Opel automobile plant was established in 1966 and the world famous Pfaff Sewing machine company was founded in 1862. A red beard, a fish on a red flag and little red devils Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa partially resided in Kaiserslautern and erected a Kaiserpfalz (an emperor’s residence) from 1152 to 1160. The remains are still visible between the city hall and the main bus stop downtown. Barbarossa means “red beard” and the city is proud to use the title “Barbarossastadt” in his honor. During the Middle Ages Kaiserslautern was surrounded by numerous ponds with an abundance of fish. Legend has it that in 1497 a giant pike that had a ring with Greek insignia was caught in the “Kaiserwoog”. It is said that Emperor Friedrich II (grandson of Barbarossa) personally put this fish in the pond 267 years earlier. Thus, the fish was integrated into the red and white city flag and coat of arms. The players of the famous soccer team 1. FCK (Fussballclub Kaiserslautern) are often referred to as the Rote Teufel (red devils) due to their fierce battles winning the German premier league four times. Fritz Walter, an early heroic member of the team, was the team captain of the World Cup winning 1954 German National Team and

is one of Germany´s most legendary players in the history of the sport. Fountains, towers and colorful flowers The city has a wide spread pedestrian area and most of its attractions can be visited on foot. The Kaiserbrunnen (emperor’s fountain) at Mainzer Tor on the north-eastern end, depicts the city’s history with a myriad of bronze sculptures including Friedrich Barbarossa, Rudolf von Habsburg, a soccer ball, an automobile engine and even a boat full of dreams, along with other surprises. Just a two-minute walk away, you may want to visit the Theodor Zink Museum, which was originally an inn for travelers, and displays historic artefacts of the life and times in medieval Kaiserslautern as well as a model of the town. The walk will lead you through Steinstrasse, the hotspot for nightlife in the 1950’s and 60’s until it was finally declared offlimits for military personnel. In the meantime, many buildings have been renovated and re-opened for evening fun. The artistic fountain at St. Martin’s Platz is nowadays a highly frequented spot to enjoy a fresh beer or a glass of wine amid pubs, restaurants and bars in historic semi-timbered buildings. Crossing the street, your walk will lead you to Stiftskirche and historic Adler Apotheke (pharmacy). Taking a right, you

will pass by Kaiserslautern’s oldest semi-timbered wine and beer restaurant “Spinnrädl”, built in the 16th century, and eventually arrive at the newly designed Schiller Platz across the street from Fruchthalle, the city´s concert hall. The complete inner city provides shopping and dining opportunities to suit everyone’s taste. Nature lovers may want to take a hike to Humberg Turm (tower) towering over the Palatinate Forest or just visit the prominent City Hall. It was completed in 1968 and at that time was the highest city hall in Germany. Restaurant “21” is located on the 21st floor and offers a spectacular view of the city, with the “fortress Betzenberg” (Fritz-Walter Stadium) and the highest building in town, the Apostel Church with its impressive steeple. The Japanese Garden is right across the street and is especially beautiful in the spring when the trees are in full bloom. There is also an original tea house and a large pool with koi fish. Further down the road, the Gartenschau Park, which has attracted thousands of visitors each year since its opening in 2000, boasts a life-size dinosaur display, a skater park, playgrounds and picnic areas, a picturesque chapel made of out willow branches and colorful flower arrangements throughout the year. You may even dip your feet into the cool water of the uncovered Lauter River just

beneath the old sandstone quarry. Unexpected treasures, migrants and music galore During excavation work for an underground garage, a Jewish mikveh was discovered. At Synagogen Platz, two wall fragments of the synagogue, which was dismantled in 1938, are a memorial of the beauty of the structure, while seven 3D visual devices allow visitors to take a look at the former interior. In addition, there are three mosques and an Islamic cultural center in the city. The Institute for Palatine History and Folklife Studies has dedicated itself to history with a focus on the countless thousands from the region that emigrated to the U.S. centuries ago, full of dreams of a prosperous new life. There are many other exciting things to do and discover in “K-town”. The zoo in Siegelbach has animals from around the world and the Wildpark in the city’s east will acquaint you with local and (almost) distinct animals. Gelterswoog offers aqua fun with a beach and water sports. Kammgarn cultural center, a former spinning mill, has a wide selection of musical entertainment and the Pfalztheater offers concerts, plays, musicals and operas. The Fruchthalle, originally intended as a farmers’ market, has a magnificent concert hall on the third floor. The annual friendship concerts by the USAREUR and

USAFE Bands also take place there. Varying festivals occur throughout the year, such as the “Summer Nights” in July, “Swinging Lautern” in early September and the Christmas Markets during the holiday season. Twice a year the Messeplatz is host to the “Maikerwe” and “Oktoberkerwe” (fairs) with fun and rides, gastronomic delights and music in the fest tents. Did you know that… • Kaiserslautern has two U.S. twin cities? Davenport, Iowa and Columbia, South Carolina. • Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa was rather adventurous, traveled throughout all of (today’s) Germany and drowned in Saleph River (Turkey) on his return trip from his second crusade at nearly 70 years of age? • In the 1800s a horse-drawn carriage trip from Mainz to Kaiserslautern (about 60 km) was a day’s journey? • Many Germans refer to Kleber Kaserne as “23. Kaserne”? It was built for the Royal Bavarian 23rd Infantry Regiment in 1913 and still boasts a picturesque bell tower. • Kaiserslautern was the smallest of 12 cities hosting the FIFA 2006 World Cup in Germany? The U.S. team tied against Italy in a match at Fritz-WalterStadium with hundreds of KMC members cheering it on.

Welcome to Kaiserslautern As one of the largest American military bases outside of the United States, Kaiserslautern can look back on decades of excellent German-American relations. When I say relationships, I don’t just mean good neighbors. In the roughly 70 years that the U.S. Armed Forces have been on site here, many deep friendships have developed and many families have been founded. Germany and the United States have grown together here in the West Palatinate in a wonderful way that characterizes the region and possibly makes it unique nationwide. Anyone who hears the name Kaiserslautern thinks of 1. FCK, they think of Pfaff Sewing machines and they think of Americans. The German-American friendship and our great partnership on many levels are wellknown, not only in this area but also in the U.S. During the last decades the city has enormously changed. Kaiserslautern has evolved into an international city, a worldwide known location for science and for modern economy, especially in the high-tech sector. Nowadays,

Dr. Klaus Weichel, Lord Mayor of the City of Kaiserslautern

people from about 150 nations enjoy living in Kaiserslautern. Kaiserslautern is a city on the move, which at the same time preserves its tradition. This unique mixture is what makes us special. Big, but not too big. Both modern and traditional. A city with character, flair and heart. I cordially invite you to visit our city.

Dr. Klaus Weichel , Lord Mayor

Kaiserbrunnen by Magdalena Miederer German-American Community Office

The Kaiserbrunnen (Emperor’s Fountain) at Mainzer Tor in Kaiserslautern was designed by Gernot Rumpf, a Kaiserslautern sculptor in 1987. The bronze fountain features current, as well as important historical tillustrations of the City of Kaiserslautern. The most prominent feature is a sculpture of Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa (1122-1190) situated in the middle of the fountain. In 1152, Emperor Barbarossa had an imperial palace (Kaiserpfalz) commissioned in the settlement which, over time, has turned into what is now the City of Kaiserslautern. Emperor Barbarossa used the palace as a residence when preparing for crusades and enjoying his favorite pastime, hunting. The second person featured on the fountain is King Rudolf of Habsburg (1218-1291) who gave Kaiserslautern its city rights in 1276. Gaining these city rights meant certain privileges, for example, more

independence in the governing of a city or holding a market. On the fountain is also a coatof-arms. As the heraldic animal for the City of Kaiserslautern, a fish can be found on the fountain as well. Another creature that is sculpted is the “Elwedritsche,” a regional fabled birdlike creature, which is said to only be caught with a giant net on a full moon night. The owl stands for wisdom and Kaiserslautern’s history as a city of school and university, the elephants and the city towers symbolize strength of the former city walls. An Opel engine and a Pfaff sewing machine on the fountain represent the city’s economic development after World War II, while the wheels stand for the Technical University of Kaiserslautern and technical innovation. A cask bucket symbolizes the former Eisenwerke (iron works). You might have noticed that Kaiserslautern is famous for soccer. A soccer ball signed by legendary Fritz Walter is therefore part of the fountain

as well. Fritz Walter from Alsenborn played for the local soccer team 1. Fußball Club Kaiserslautern for decades and led the German national team to its victory during the Soccer World Championship in 1954. Other objects that can be found on the fountain are Napoleon’s hat for the time that Kaiserslautern was governed by France after the Napoleonic Wars, a horse armor of the knights of the Rittersberg, as well as a donkey and a horse. A basket with honey marks traditional beekeepers and a wagon

with grapes characterizes a former viticulture area near Kaiserslautern. An estimated 100,000 Palatines left the area and settled mainly in Pennsylvania in the 18th and 19th centuries, and the emigrant ship with a cloud full of dreams above its sails symbolizes the wave of Palatinate emigrants who sailed to the United States with hopes of a prosperous future. Elegant photos can be taken as a lady or a knight behind the two sculptures on the side of the fountain.

Last but not least, a mouse is hidden among the other figures, it doesn’t hold any historical significance, but is the sculptor’s “signature” or personal identification mark. Visit the fountain, get a glimpse of history and see if you can catch the mouse! If you would like to see more of artist Gernot Rumpf’s creations plan a visit to the Glockenbaum fountain in Mainz, the Elwedritsche-Brunnen in Neustadt/Weinstrasse and the Papyrusbrunnen in Mannheim.

Earth Day 2022 — Invest in our planet

In December 1970 Congress authorized the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts. As a result, Americans began honoring Earth Day on the April 22nd every year. Earth Day founder Gaylord Nelson, a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, developed the idea for a national day to focus on the environment after witnessing the ravages of the 1969 massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. Nelson said, “building a sustainable society is the critical challenge of this century. Everything depends on it.” In 1990, Earth Day went global in 141 countries and the event continues to spread internationally, providing a powerful focal point from which people can demonstrate their commitment to being good stewards of the environment. This year, more than 1 billion people in 192 countries worldwide will celebrate Earth Day. Earth Day provides an opportunity to highlight the need for a clean environment with even more urgency as effects of climate change become more apparent every day. Scientists have amassed evidence suggesting that it is more important than ever to take action. The good news is that we do not have to give up our lifestyles to create

an effect, and small changes can make a big difference. Below is a list of changes you can make now to lower your carbon footprint: • Get informed. Learn more about the science behind our climate challenge and the responsibility that all sectors hold in addressing the issue. Add your voice to the issues that are shaping the climate debate and seek out emerging, evidence-based data. • Shop at a farmers market. There is a popular movement toward “sustainable consumerism” occurring in Europe and the U.S., which promotes purchasing goods that are produced with the minimum amount of resources consumed in the production of those goods. Farmers markets require minimal resources in order to produce goods that provide as much, if not more, benefit to the consumer. Many nearby cities, including Kaiserslautern, hold regular farmers markets, making a weekly trip easy. • Use energy-saving light bulbs. Another energy saving option is to change your conventional light bulbs to energy-saving bulbs like LED (light emitting diode) or CFL (compact fluorescent lamp) bulbs. These bulbs are more efficient and use 80 percent less energy while lasting up to 10 times longer saving you about

$25 annually, and reducing 14 kilograms of carbon emissions from being produced by electrical companies each year. • Turn off or unplug electronics when they are not in use. Turning off electronics, or even unplugging them, instead of keeping them on standby, will save both energy and money. Washing your clothes at a lower temperature will also reduce hot water bills. • Walk or take public transportation instead of driving. Walking is a healthy alternative to driving short distances, and your wallet will be grateful. Transportation is now the largest source of carbon emissions in the United States. No matter where you live, travel by car or airplane contributes heavily to our shared carbon footprint. Take public transit, bike, or walk when possible — it’s good for your health, your wallet and the planet. • Lower your thermostat. Did you know that for every degree you lower your thermostat you will consume about 10% less energy? Lowing the temperature is a win for your wallet and for the environment. For more environmental information, please contact the 86th Civil Engineering Squadron Installation Management Flight at 480-5086, 480-7712 or email 86ces.cea@us.af.mil.

US Air Force TACPs train NATO forces in INIOCHOS 22 Story and photos by Staff Sgt. Bliss, Texas; and Air National Guard Airmen in Poland supported U.S., Allied and partner nations during exercise INIOCHOS 22, held March 27 to April 7, 2022, at Andravida Air Base, Larissa and Argos in Greece. INIOCHOS 22 is a Hellenic air force-sponsored operational and tactical level Field Training Exercise, hosted by the Hellenic Air Tactics Center at Greece’s fighter weapons school. The exercise is

tors exercise mission command at the tactical edge to direct and synchronize air operations in support of NATO Allies and partners. This includes advising ground commanders on the capabilities and limitations of airpower, and the planning, requesting, and controlling of various air effects. Joint Terminal Attack Controllers are specifically trained and certified TACP operators who provide terminal control of airpower, usually in the form of close air support. The mission of the TACPs during the exercise is to support CAS engagements throughout the country of Greece by providing command and control, integration, and precision strike capabilities. “In support of INIOCHOS 22, we have traveled to the four corners of Greece, working in the mountainous terrain as well as in the cities,” Senior Airman Dave Mehok, 4th Combat Training Squadron, JTAC qualified TACP operator. TACP C2 relays information for CAS missions to the jets at the air base in Andravida from different locations, as well as the health and welfare of all TACPs throughout

the country, explained TSgt. Austin Ballantine, 7 ASOS, TACP C2 NonCommissioned Officer in Charge. Training is vital between air and ground parties as there are not many links that exist. The TACP/ NATO JTACs are there to assist. TACP C2 is collecting data from the TACPs around the country, Greece, and channeling it to one specific point. This allows the information to be controlled and distributed to who needs to get it, explained Mehok. “Our training is important because in a deployed environment we need to execute. In training, we can find any flaws or friction points in order to find solutions, so that when we deploy, we can support any NATO CAS aircraft and JTAC qualified personnel throughout the world,” added Ballantine. There are many different CAS capabilities such as bombers, fighters, and Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance platforms. This exercise increases the operator’s interoperability between NATO partners specifically regarding close air support techniques, tactics and procedures.

“It is imperative for other countries to work with American JTACs so when they work with American aircraft, they have the same training we would get,” Ballantine said. “We train them while we work with them here in Greece. The same goes for NATO pilots, if they work with American JTACs they can expect the same results.” The TACP operators showcase equipment they use to NATO counterparts, which is often different from their current capabilities. This allows our partners to learn and train on more equipment and overall increases interoperability across NATO. During training and exercises like INIOCHOS, NATO operators have to persevere through language and training barriers to support the aircraft from multiple nations. “Training in Greece has offered a unique opportunity with live ranges, excellent infrastructure and support facilities,” said Ballantine. This isn’t Ballantine’s first mission in Greece. He participated in a CAS mission here eight years ago. The proficiency levels since then have increased dramatically with the Greek pilots and the Greeks executing CAS,” said Ballantine. “I see a huge difference on how the Greeks can put on an exercise.” The team explained how everyone has been very capable and each member has been utilized in many different roles during INIOCHOS 22. “There are TACPs doing the TACP C2 mission – contacting aircraft directly, and TACPS that are doing the Precision Strike mission 100s of miles away,” said Ballantine. “We were able to arrive at many locations and immediately start executing. INIOCHOS proves that there are a variety of other mission sets that TACPs can do if given the opportunity.”

Pennsylvania Soldier sets stage for Allied Operations in Europe Story and photos by Eleanor Prohaska 21st Theater Sustainment Command When U.S. military personnel need to locate a Bradley Fighting Vehicle or armored personnel carrier in Europe, U.S. Army Capt. Zachary Zanetti can tell them where to find one. As commander of the 260th Movement Control Team, 39th Transportation Battalion, the Philadelphia native moves military fighting vehicles and heavy equipment throughout Europe, ensuring the U.S. and its allies are poised to respond quickly to world events. In March and April, Zanetti and his team, who are part of the 16th Sustainment Brigade, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, helped move a brigade’s worth of military equipment from the U.S. through ports in Greece, the Netherlands and Denmark. The transportation of more than 2,000 units, including Abrams main battle tanks and Paladin self-propelled cannon artillery systems, was part of the incoming Atlantic Resolve rotation. Since April 2014, U.S. Army Europe and Africa has led the Department of Defense’s Atlantic Resolve land efforts by rotating units based in the U.S. to Europe. At the most recent port operation in Esbjerg, Denmark, April 6, 2022, the 260th MCT worked side by side with the 598th Transportation Brigade, host nation Soldiers and civilians, and the United Kingdom’s 104th Theater Enabling Group to receive equipment and set the stage for onward movement to Poland. The equipment supports the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division based out

Capt. Zachary Zanetti (far right) commands the 260th Movement Control Team, 39th Transportation Battalion, 16th Sustainment Brigade, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, which received approximately 350 U.S. and U.K. tactical military vehicles and equipment at the port in Esbjerg, Denmark, April 6. The port operation, which also involved the 598th Transportation Brigade, host nation Soldiers and civilians, led by the United Kingdom’s 104th Theater Enabling Group, was part of Atlantic Resolve, a series of bilateral, multinational training exercises involving more than a dozen countries. The vehicles and equipment support the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division based out of Fort Carson, Colorado.

of Fort Carson, Colorado. Their deployment marks the first time three armored brigades have been deployed in Europe at the same time since 2007. The other armored brigades currently in Europe are the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division and 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division. “This demonstrates our ability to build combat power, maintain readiness and deploy anywhere in the European theater area of operations on a moment’s notice,” said Zanetti. Zanetti, who received his Army commission at Scranton University in 2016, is mindful of the impor-

tance of that message. The Atlantic Resolve rotations have been a strong show of support to our allies and partners in Europe," said Zanetti. Zanetti knows what it takes to get the job done. “My Father served in the Air Force for 28 years and deployed nine times when I was growing up in Philadelphia,” he said. “That impression as a kid carried over to my adult life that morphed into an obligation to serve my country.” He appreciates the support he has received from family and friends back home in Abington, Pennsylvania.

A Soldier drives a Bradley Fighting Vehicle off the ARC Endurance transit vessel at the Port of Esbjerg, April 6. Soldiers from 598th Transportation Brigade and the 21st Theater Sustainment Command’s 39th Transportation Battalion worked with Danish soldiers, civilians and the United Kingdom’s 104th Theater Enabling Group, as part of Atlantic Resolve, a series of bilateral, multinational training exercises involving more than a dozen countries.

“They go out of their way to thank me for [my] service, especially being in the European AOR [area of operations],” he said. “We actually received a package of letters from the Abington school district, where my father works, wishing all the Soldiers currently involved in contingencies and part of Atlantic Resolve to be safe and thanking them for their service. I communicate to my Soldiers that there are heaps of individuals in the states that support everything we do.” What they do, according to Zanetti, is help senior military leaders know where equipment and personnel are and where they are

headed at any time, so they can make better-informed tactical decisions. In keeping with the Army’s Regionally Aligned Readiness and Modernization Model to sustain readiness and facilitate modernization, Zanetti’s unit is field-testing the Distributional Retrograde Adaptive Planning and Execution Management program. DRAM uses artificial intelligence, special labels and radio frequency identification tags to provide and update vehicle and equipment status in real time. In addition to providing the opportunity to test logistics technology, Atlantic Resolve enhances interoperability with host nation partners and NATO allies. Weeks of planning, living and working together to prepare for the Esbjerg port operation built personal and professional relationships with Soldiers from partner nations. “Interoperability is integral to the success of working across national boundaries,” said Zanetti. “Here at the Port of Esbjerg we've had constant interaction with our United Kingdom partners, Danish Port Authorities' and Danish Armed Forces. Everything from escorts, life support, base access, and accommodations is a collaborative effort between our three nations.” Additional Atlantic Resolve countries include Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania and Slovakia. Zanetti said traveling to different nations, learning about different cultures and working with diverse individuals are among the highlights of serving in the Logistics Corps.

Capt. Zachary Zanetti worked and lived side by side with other U.S., Danish and British soldiers at Denmark’s Oksbol Military Training Facility to prepare for port operations in Esbjerg, Denmark, April 6. Zanetti is commander for the 260th Movement Control Team, 39th Transportation Battalion, 16th Sustainment Brigade, 21st Theater Sustainment Command. The port operation, led by the United Kingdom’s 104th Theater Enabling Group, was part of Atlantic Resolve, a series of bilateral, multinational training exercises involving more than a dozen countries. About 350 U.S. and U.K. tactical military vehicles and equipment, supporting the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, was unloaded and prepared for onward movement.

Army Specialist Samuil Matveev competes in the 2021 Installation Management Command-Europe Best Warrior Competition, March 1, 2021.

by Jason Tudor U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Two times in his 20 years, U.S. Army Specialist Samuil Matveev’s life has changed significantly. The first came on his seventh birthday in 2001, when his parents immigrated to the United States with little more than hope and a prayer from Antonesti, Moldova, a commune of two villages on the eastern border of Romania. The second came in February 2020, when he joined the U.S. Army, leaving his naturalized home in Sacramento, California. That decision wasn’t the most popular with family who recalled the distrust they had for the communist military of their age, but Matveev said he felt a calling to serve. “I came from a country where we really didn’t have anything,” said Matveev, who speaks English and Romanian. “I felt indebted to the United States for all it offered for me and my family.” Matveev, a chaplain assistant at U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz in Kaiserslautern, Germany, has served 26 months in the Army. He said his faith and a mentorship from a former Army chaplain jumpstarted his decision to join. Since the start of his enlistment, Matveev said the benefits of an Army career have

become more and more evident. “In Moldova, there’s no health care. It’s nonexistent. If you have money, you can get it. Otherwise, you’re out of luck,” said the recently married Soldier. “So, having health care and dental coverage to draw upon and not worry about is a big benefit.” What’s at stake? According to the Army’s recruiting website, in the year Matveev enlisted (2020) the Army recruited about 68,500 people, with about 11% of those coming from his home state. About 41,300 recruits received an average bonus of almost $12,000. Today, however, the economy is job-rich. According to statistics from the Army, there are about 10.6 million jobs available on the economy and about 6.9 million people to fill them. People have choices when it comes to where they work and employers are upping their recruiting efforts with higher wages and better benefits packages, especially with roughly 3.5 million jobs available than there are people looking for work. U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz Command Sgt. Major Stephen LaRocque, the senior enlisted leader for the unit, said understanding the benefits available to Soldiers helps

make informed decisions on joining and retaining people and closing the gap with the civilian community. “The Army has and still offers pension plans, home-buying benefits, 30 days paid annual vacation, paid parental leave, and more,” the senior enlisted leader said. “I think some of those surprise folks about the military, but it’s something that we’ve done for years – take care of our Soldiers and their families.” LaRocque also mentioned other benefits including enlistment bonuses up to $50,000, complete health care coverage for full-time Soldiers, and over 1,500 advanced training certificates. A degree and some security The Army also offers tuition assistance with the opportunity to earn full college tuition. That benefit is something Matveev capitalized on, finishing his bachelor’s degree in psychology and he’s forging ahead to get a graduate degree. Matveev, the Installation Management Command-Europe Soldier of the Year in 2021, also talked about some of the intangibles that make his time in the Army an “absolute calling.” “I don’t have to worry about the housing crisis. The Army does well to provide my wife and me with housing on post,” he said. His wife, also

a Moldovan immigrant, enjoys the safety and security of living on post. “It was crucial to her.” LaRocque said he’s seen how important many of the intangible benefits can be to Soldiers from the start of their service until its conclusion. “The research tells us that folks like Specialist Maveev want security and stability more than ever, but few recognize the Army as the path to achieving that,” LaRocque said. “In the Army, Soldiers will find a supportive environment that puts people first, cutting-edge career training, and opportunities to develop skills that can be used in and out of uniform.” USAG Rheinland-Pfalz’s lead chaplain has seen Matveev evolve in his career, and said he’s seen Matveev encouraging peers. Lt. Col. Randall Curry said it’s exciting to watch the young Soldier grow. “As a young leader and teammate, Specialist Matveev grasps hold of the Army values, and he encourages his peers to do the same,” he said. “I have watched him analyze many of the career, educational, and family opportunities that the Army provides. As he contemplates how he can use them to develop himself, he talks about it with other Soldiers wherever he goes, spurring them to grow too.”

Matveev said he wants to serve in the Army as long as he’s able, and looks forward to what the future holds, thankful he’s found a job that supports him as much as he supports the Army team. “I want to do this job as long as I can. I feel like the Army’s done well to take care of me,” he said. INCL. SALAD (12-2 P.M.)

At three years old, U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Brandon George, 700th Contracting Squadron contracting specialist, joined the local soccer league in North Ridgeville, Ohio. George could count on his family to support him and his love for soccer throughout his life. “They drove me to soccer practice and tournaments all over the country,” said George. “They even supported me when I decided to go to college even though they didn’t think it was the right thing for me.” While in college at Cleveland State University, George began to consider joining the U.S. Air Force, but he still wanted to pursue his interest in the sport. Before enlisting, he contacted the Air Force’s soccer team coach to ensure he would still be able to continue his soccer journey. “I joined the military to become part of something bigger than myself,” said George. “I wanted to leave my hometown, and I wanted the opportunity to travel. My dad was in the Air Force and my brother is in the Air Force, so that motivated me to join as well.” Once he joined the Air Force, it would be two years before he could try out for the soccer team. After arriving at Kapaun Air Station, George began playing on local teams. He started playing for the Ramstein team, the Kaiserslautern Military Community team and playing with a local team in a German league. He was asked to officially join one of the German teams. He now plays with that team three times a week. “I wanted to play with them to get more of the German experience, the culture, and the language,” said

George. “Being a part of the German team builds camaraderie between Americans and the Germans. We get to exchange stories.” In 2021 during Selectively Trained And Ready augmentee training, a program that provides general security forces and force protection knowledge to qualified Airmen within the Kaiserslautern Military Community, George injured his back. A year before the Air Force Soccer team’s tryouts, he needed to have surgery for a bulged disk. “I knew I would have a hard time getting ready and back in shape for the tryouts, but we have a great physical therapy department at Ramstein,” said George. After building his core strength back and overcoming his fear of hurting himself again, George decided to get back into soccer. He practiced three times a week to prepare. “It was just about commitment, consistency and putting in the work every day preparing for my goal at the end of my recovery process,” he said. George flew to Tampa, Florida, where he spent two and a half weeks trying out for the Air Force Men’s Soccer team. With only one day to get used to the time difference, George was one of 18 players who made the team.

“I was pretty nervous about the jetlag,” said George. “We just got right into it. You’re playing so much that you just wake up, eat, play soccer, sleep, play more soccer and sleep again.” After tryouts, they immediately started practicing for the round-robin Armed Forces Tournament. “It’s important that all of our players give 100 percent of their effort at every practice to make our team better,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Jeremiah Kirschman, Air Forces Men’s Soccer team head coach. “I needed our players to have a winning mentality where they do everything to the best of their abilities.” The Air Force Men’s Soccer team played the Marine Corps, Navy, and Army during the tournament. The Air Force team ended the 2022 Armed Forces Men’s Soccer Championship undefeated with a 4-0 victory. Throughout his Air Force journey and his journey to make the Air Force Men’s Soccer team, George received support from many people around him. “I have an awesome squadron,” George said. “A strong support system is essential. Even though I had just moved to a new country I was able to establish that here. It got rough, so I’m thankful for them.”

FREIBURG from Page 1 In Germany there are two cities with this name and similar spelling. Both are mining and university towns, but they are very far apart from each other. The Freiberg in the Saxony region, which is an exceptional town full of antiques, history and culture. However, we are highlighting Freiburg im Breisgau in the Black Forest, which is an amazing and equally exceptional town. Making a perfect day trip from Stuttgart, here are five things you can do while there! 1. Market A must visit is a farmers and artisan market located on the Münsterplatz, and is not too far from the Information center. (Don’t forget to stop by the center to pick up brochures for additional sites.) This market has woodwork artisans, roasted chestnuts, delectable pastries and so much more. As your walking through the market and city, don’t forget to look down at the mosaic designs as they decorate the street ways throughout the town. We found several of these special designs quite entertaining as they identified the places of business. Created initially to help walking traffic throughout the city, they now really pay homage to Freiburg’s dedication to the arts. 2. Towers There are two beautiful and famous towers in town, the Schwabentor and the Martinstor. The Schwabentor has a pewter museum at the top as well as the tower can be toured for a €3 per person donation. (Please take note that it is closed on Mondays.) The walk to the Schwabentor from Münsterplatz will take you down the cobble-

stone streets lined with mini-canals. Once used for drainage years ago, these canals are now a quaint signature of this town. Be careful where you step as you wouldn’t want to accidentally fall in! There are also spaces wide enough where an ankle might get twisted. The Martinstor is also nice with its hand paintings and decor. Being attached to a McDonald’s, it is hard to concentrate on the tower’s place in history. With both towers very close to the university district, you will notice many young people and a heavy bicycle traffic. 3. Museums & churches Freiburg has several museums and churches, which would be very difficult to see them all on a day trip. Nevertheless, here’s a great list to add to your itinerary based on your family’s preference. Museums • Museum of Modern Art • Nature Museum– A great stop for children • Augustiner Museum– Art collection from Middle Ages to Baroque period • City Museum– Over 900 years of city history and art from a renowned benefactor • Old University Museum– Freiburg’s university museum, including history of the Jesuit order from 1600’s to 1700’s. • Archeological Museum Churches • Martinskirche • Münster • Old University Church • Schwarzen Kloster • Paulus Church 4. Schlossberg & Funicular If you have enough time in your

schedule, make a trip up the funicular to the city Schloß or castle. The views of the Rhein valley are spectacular. However, right now the tower itself is closed for construction. The website indicates that it will reopen in the summer. You can reach the Schloß by walking a trail with stairs or by taking the Schloßbergbahn (castle train). We usually take the train up and walk down. It’s €5 per person up and down and €3 person one way. This could be a bit pricey for a group of five, I suggest walking the stairs which would be a great way to save money and stay fit. 5. Grab a bite to eat! Being so close to France, the influence is felt in the cuisine. The regional specialty is Schäufele, a roast pork dish that includes cabbage, onions and potato salad. Years ago this dish could usually be found only during the Christmas holidays, but it can now be found on almost every menu in Freiburg. I found the pastries here rather exceptional. Though passing several bakeries and cake specialty stores, we enjoyed enjoyed some almond flour pastries from the market on the church square. Overall, our day in Freiburg im Breisgau was a lot of fun and very informative. This charming city beckons you to go back to discover more. I think it would make a wonderful 3-day trip in the Black Forest region. The city has done a wonderful job of maintaining its quaintness while blending in the modern. Some of the architecture pays homage to the crusades and the city’s patron saint, Saint George. As a commuter train passed under our feet, we admired the painting of St. George (at the Schawbentor), which depicted him stepping on a dragon he just had slayed.

Getting there From Stuttgart you can go two different ways, the scenic route (through the winding roads and forest) or the highway. We took the scenic route there and then the highway back home. There is often construction on A5, so traffic jams are quite common. Knowing this ahead of time might influence your journey route. Taking a little more than two hours from Stuttgart, it could be a bit of a drive for a day trip. It would be wise just to leave early. Parking was super easy this time of year with most of the garages open. We parked at the APCOA Parkhaus Schwarzwald on Wasserstraße. This garage popped us out into a shopping center with merrygo-round. We walked around the mall to find the re-entrance into the garage. Your ticket usually has the name of your garage on it, so you can retrace your steps if needed be.
