KMC innovations: 569th USFPS saves time, money, and lives Story and photos by Senior Airman Elizabeth Baker 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

Senior Airman Nicholas Miller, left, and Staff Sgt. Ian Metcalf, 569th United States Forces Police Squadron desk patrolmen, use a tablet and satellite tracking application to locate other patrolmen March 9 on Vogelweh Military Complex. The 569th USFPS uses tablets installed with three applications to perform the function of a computer aided dispatching system at a small fraction of the cost.

Innovation drives today’s Air Force, and the 569th United States Forces Police Squadron is doing it right. Instead of spending $1.2 million to cut response time with a computer aided dispatching system, the 569th USFPS has figured out how to get the same effect for $10,000, and it’s helping them save lives as well as time and money. Tech. Sgt. Swen Swearingen, 569th USFPS noncommissioned officer in charge of operations, explained the function of a CAD. When a dispatcher needs to send patrolmen to an incident, a CAD can automatically locate the nearest patrol and notify them, reducing response time.

“In the States, civilian law enforcement agencies use CADs,” Swearingen said. “They’re extremely expensive and hard to get overseas. We figured, ‘Why not use what technology we have available to do the same thing?’” By using their own version of a CAD, the 569th USFPS estimates it is saving 369 man-hours per fiscal year. The innovation began when Maj. John-Paul Adrian, who was then a captain serving as 569th USFPS operations officer, figured out how to use tablets and three free tablet applications to do the work of a CAD. Following Adrian’s design, the dispatcher and each patrolman keeps a tablet. A satellite tracking applicaSee INNOVATIONS, Page 2

Still time to register for ‘Amazing Base’ by Staff Sgt. Tory Patterson 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs It’s not too late to take part in one of the most unique team-building events to be held by the 86th Airlift Wing: “The Amazing Base.” The Amazing Base, loosely inspired by American reality television game show “The Amazing Race,” will place 4-person teams in fierce, but friendly competition April 24 on Ramstein Air Base. Participants are challenged to race towards and overcome a variety of “Road Blocks” around base. The purpose of the event is show support for Ramstein’s military spouses. Kristin Moore, spouse of 86th Airlift Wing commander Brig. Gen. Richard Moore, said the Amazing Base will get

spouses familiar with places they may need to know during their time here. “It is easy to rattle off a list of all the things Ramstein has to offer, but until you are comfortable enough to walk through the front door of an office, you cannot take advantage of services,” she said. According to Moore, the Amazing Base was specifically designed to attract spouses that may not typically attend more traditional spouse events. “House husbands, civilian spouses, spouses who work and can’t take 2 or 3 days off for a resiliency conference —this event is for you!” said Moore. The Amazing Base is open to all Department of Defense ID card holders 18 years of age or older, but teams should have a minimum of two spouses par-

ticipating in order to compete for prizes. Participants are encouraged to use a variety of transportation modes including vehicles, bicycles, roller blades, or on foot. “We are a huge community with spouses of Active Duty, Guard, and Reserve, but we also have DODEA, GS, NAF, NATO, and more,” said Moore. She added that after participating in the Amazing Base, “you will no longer question where to go when you need information, and hopefully you will come out with a few more friends than when you started the race.” People wanting to participate but who are unable to organize a 4-person team are still encouraged to sign-up. If participants let the coordinators know they are racing as an individual when registering, they can be placed

Swearingen recalled times when the new system was particularly useful. “The one that jumps out the most is when we had a suicidal teenager who took off,” Swearingen said. “We didn’t know where she was.” The 569th USFPS began tracking the young woman down. They sent four responders to four possible locations, and one of them found her within two hours. The patrol immediately pinned her location and sent it out to the other patrols as well as to the Red Cross, and they all responded directly to where she was. “Another time, there was suicidal mother and no one knew where she was,” Swearingen said. “Her daughter had mentioned that when she had alone time she liked to go on hiking trails. An opportunity for multilingual Airmen

by Senior Airman Joshua Magbanua 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Do you know one or more foreign languages? You may be eligible for the Language Enabled Airman Program. The Air Force Culture and Language Center is forming a corps of multilingual Airmen to take on missions around the world, and recently released a memorandum detailing the 2018 LEAP recruitment process. This year’s application window for active duty enlisted and officer Airmen began on March 20 and will continue until June 16. Applicants must have at least 48 months time-in-service. LEAP centers around the concept of specially-identified multilingual Airmen who go on missions every few years to serve as translators and sharpen their foreign language skills. The program’s objective is to produce cross-culturally competent leaders from all U.S. Air Force career fields to support missions around the world, said Lt. Col. Laura Hunt, AFCLC LEAP Language Intensive Training Events program manager. “LEAP Airmen serve as ambassadors of the U.S. Air Force,” she said. “They go through special training and obtain a special experience indicator. If somebody has that SEI, I can be confident that if I send them out they will successfully accomplish their

mission. They are trained, vetted, and competent in their language and culture.” LEAP Airmen develop their skills through training, mentorship programs, and temporary duty assignments. Hunt added that LEAP TDYs vary widely, and can include humanitarian missions, training exercises, cultural immersion programs, and professional military education. An Airman’s journey through the LEAP application process begins with the defense language proficiency test. As of 2018, there are more than 30 languages an Airman can test in. Hunt encouraged potential applicants not to worry about scoring high on the tests, because the objective of LEAP is to mentor, improve, and develop Airmen in their language skills. “If you speak more than one language, test in every one you can,” she said. “Take as many DLPTs as you can and don’t worry about the scores. Just show us you have an aptitude for language.” Applicants may also take an Oral Proficiency Interview in case a DLPT is unavailable. Those who wish to schedule a DLPT or OPI must contact their local education office. For more information about LEAP, visit the Air Force Culture and Language Center Website at http://culture.af.mil/ leap/index.html

New and improved: Ramstein’s oldest barbershop receives a twist Story and photo by Senior Airman Timmethy James 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs For 57 years, Kaiserslautern Military Community members have had a barbershop that offered a fresh cut. C&H Barbershop, in MOMS Ramstein, was the first to open on base, and served everyone from generals to toddlers. Today, anyone who takes a stroll into the old shop will notice some new flavor added to an old tradition. C&H closed over Easter weekend and reopened under new ownership April 1 as Siggi’s Barbershop. Sigrid Zang, “Siggi” for short, previously cut hair in the shop for nine years. She took over ownership once her boss, Claudia Gomez, retired after 37 years cutting hair, and 17 years as the owner. Upon entering the new shop, customers will notice a different name and logo, a new interior, and different furniture and decorations. New amenities include salon services for women, hair massages and washes for both men and women, and a beverage

station with coffee and water. Haircuts are available to all ages. Walk-ins are still welcome, but scheduled appointments have priority. The new hours are Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Saturdays 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Siggi’s will close all German and U.S. holidays, and official family days. “For me, as a hairstylist, it’s the passion,” Siggi said. “You can change a lot with a haircut. You can also help make somebody feel better with the relaxing time and peace they get while in the shop.” Gaining ownership of a business would normally take a few weeks or more. But when Gomez stepped down on March 30 the Ramstein Club Complex, which oversees MOMS and its shops, worked with Siggi to streamline the contracting process so there wouldn’t be a stoppage in service at the barbershop. The club also aimed to increase customer service at the barbershop by adding credit and debit card payment options and accepting walk-in appointments. “The 86 Force Support Squadron is

pleased to announce the new operator, Ms. Sigrid Zang, and we look forward to this continued service to the community,” said Paul Gotshall, Ramstein Club Complex General Manager.

Siggi’s new contract as owner will carry her through the next 10 years. “I plan to do this until I retire at 67, so another 27 years is my goal” Siggi said.

Sigrid Zang, Siggi’s Barbershop owner, poses for a portrait in her shop April 6 on Ramstein Air Base. Zang previously cut hair for 9 years. She took over ownership April 1, renamed the shop, and added new amenities such as hair washes, womens’ services, and beverages.

Protect your family against tick-borne illnesses this spring

Two female ticks on a leaf.

by Regional Health Command Europe Public Affairs Office Spring fever is in the air and as temperatures start to rise, we aren’t the only ones coming out of hibernation. Spring also lends itself to the return of ticks and tick-borne illnesses. Ticks can carry several potentially deadly diseases. Two of the most common are Lyme disease and tickborne encephalitis. According to Public Health Command Europe officials, these diseases are very common throughout Europe and in countries to the east and are contracted when a person is bitten by a tick. PHCE says that prevention is the best defense against both Lyme disease and TBE. “If you are going to be in grassy or woodland areas during tick season, wear long sleeves and pants, preferably clothing that is permethrin-treated. They also suggest wearing insect repellent containing diethylmetatoluamide (DEET) on exposed skin,” said Col. Rodney Coldren, PHCE chief of preventive medicine. You should also check yourself, your loved ones and your pets for ticks after a trek through the outdoors. If you do happen to locate a feeding tick, prompt and proper removal is important, Coldren said. “Ticks should be removed using tweezers, pulling back slowly and steadily with firm force in the reverse

known treatment or cure for TBE. “Last year, in U.S. European Command, two service members required hospital admissions for TBE likely acquired from off-duty activities, so we know that our population is at risk,” Coldren said. An effective vaccine for tick-borne encephalitis is available, and consists of a series of three shots given over a six-month period. “Since TBE does not exist in the United States, there is no U.S. Food and Drug Administration-licensed vaccination against TBE available,” Coldren said. “However, there are vaccines that have been determined by the European Medicines Agency to be very safe and effective against TBE. These are available in Europe and require three shots over a period of time.” Because the vaccine is not FDAlicensed, it is not stocked or provided at U.S. MTFs. But Coldren said the TBE vaccine is a covered TRICARE benefit for individuals living in Europe. “Individuals who wish to protect themselves and their families can contact their Primary Care Team to receive a referral to a Host Nation Provider who will then evaluate them and potentially prescribe the vaccination.” For more information on tick-borne illnesses and how to protect yourself and your family, please talk with your primary care manager.

Always use local maps or GPS, if available. 12. In the event of an incident at your destination or any location on your itinerary, notify your chain of command of your status as soon as possible. 13. Monitor local TV, radio stations, news and government and social media networking sites for updated information. 14. Consider joining an auto safety club in the event of a mechanical breakdown or vehicle accident. 15. Don’t display large sums of money, especially U.S. currency. 16. When traveling by train, select a window seat in the middle section of open coach cars. 17. When traveling away from U.S. installations, consider staying in

trusted hotels that do not have distinctly American names or service predominantly American guests. 18. Avoid staying in street-level rooms with direct access to hotel grounds or stairwells. If possible, stay in a room located between the fourth and tenth floor. 19. Use extra caution in hotel lobbies, nightclubs and other public places where bombs may be placed. Be aware of egress points in the event of an attack. 20. Military uniforms will not be worn while on leave or pass for unofficial travel. Uniforms will not be worn on public mass transit such as planes, trains and buses. 21. Consider following the USAREUR Antiterrorism Stay Safe Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/ StaySafeAntiterrorism). 22. Carry a cell phone and pre-program emergency contact phone numbers. 23. Know local laws and customs before you go. 24. Upon your return, report any suspicious or unusual activity encountered during your trip to your local security or counter intelligence office. Lastly, always watch out for persons that attempt to gather information related to military missions or operations, seek classified or sensitive information, solicit your services to join or promote a local party or cause, pick your pockets, promote involvement in scams, cause bodily harm and/ or attempt to kill you. Remember your individual operations security and force protection measures at all times. The 7th Mission Support Command reached out to the Kaiserslautern Military Community to mark several programs celebrated in April. The Army and broader military programs drawing in focus this month are Sexual Harassment and Rape Prevention, the Alcohol and Substance Abuse Program and Month of the Military Child. Team members of the 7th MSC SHARP, ASAP and Family Support Programs partnered with teams from kindred programs of the Air Force and Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz March 28 to staff tables in the food court at the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center. They provided literature and answered questions from interested KMC passersby. SHARP Linda Crosby is the 7th MSC’s Sexual Assault Response Coordinator, and staffed the SHARP table. She offered a SHARP perspective in support of unit commanders’ efforts to achieve and maintain readiness. “When everyone is treated with dignity and respect within their units, mission readiness is higher,” Crosby said. Sexual harassment and assault incidents can quickly degrade esprit de corps, training participation and therefore readiness, which subsequently detracts from the unit’s mission objectives, she added. Units with strong SHARP awareness programs are better at prevention; but, when incidents do occur, they are better equipped to provide victims the attention, support and advocacy they deserve. That, in turn, is a great enabler of continued mission preparedness, Crosby said. A cursory glance at data shows an increase in harassment and sexual assault reports, but Crosby said this is an indicator that things are heading in the right direction. “Individuals are feeling more comfortable about coming forward,” Crosby said. While improvements are still needed, there is a greater sense of confidence in the SHARP system (awareness, resources, victim advocacy, the support of SARCs and engaged leaders) that support and protect victims of offenses, she added.

Month of the Military Child Also staffing a table was Bonnie Jones, from the 7th MSC Family Support Programs office, along with Joshua Merrills who works in FSP as a contractor. Jones echoed Crosby’s points, and sees an important connection between unit strength and support of the children in military families. “Part of the strength is the family,” said Jones. “A key part of those families, are the children, and we need to let them know we support and love them.” Jones also shared FSP circulated information stressing the importance of understanding the challenges that children of military parents face. Frequent moves between military stations can be hard on kids who also experience a change of schools, friends, sports teams and studies. Also, children must endure periodic absences from their service member parents who deploy or train away from home for extended periods. These are just some of the challenges military connected kids face that most non-military kids do not. ASAP Cynthia Foster, 7th MSC ASAP coordinator, focused on alcohol awareness at her table. Foster encouraged visitors to participate in a 72-hour period of alcohol abstinence that coincided with the upcoming holiday weekend. A break from alcohol like this can build awareness about how a big a part alcohol comes to play in our lives, especially when we get together with friends and family during the holidays. In fact, keeping alcohol consumption in check is healthy, Foster said. The Mayo Clinic Healthy Lifestyle webpage advocates keeping alcohol levels moderate to help in the reduction of risk of heart disease, strokes, diabetes and overall liver health. Guidance on daily consumption rates include one of the following: 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of distilled spirits, such as whiskey or brandy. The ASAP theme this month is “Changing Attitudes: It’s not a rite of passage.” Foster said the goal is to raise awareness about alcohol use on individuals and families. Individuals that find this challenge difficult may want to talk with a health care professional.

by Senior Airman Devin Boyer 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs A swarm of motorized bikes buzzed like bees as they traversed the terrain. Tires dug into the track, flinging mud behind them. A young boy determined to beat the clock was then confronted by a ten foot roller, a speed deterrent not meant to be jumped. As he climbed the mountainous dirt pile, a competitor collided with him midair, catapulting him off the roller. “It was one of those days where it was real nasty outside,” said Lane McCall, recalling the event. “It was foggy, little bit of mud on the track – normal conditions for motocross. But it was really depressing weather, and my dad was really pushing me to my limits trying to see what he could get out of me before the Oklahoma state race.” As the boy plummeted down to the mud, his defensive instincts grabbed hold of him. “I stuck my arm out to stop myself,” he said. “It just snapped.” THE ROOTS McCall grew up in Lowell, Arkansas, a small town nestled in the Ozark Mountains. Racing motocross was a normal thing for McCall and his family; and as he put it, “Motocross consumed our lives.” “My dad grew up racing local races,” said McCall. “He never was inspired to go bigger and beyond that. He said that he didn’t really have the opportunity to take it to a higher level.” McCall’s dad wanted more for his kids. “He definitely influenced me when I was growing up,” said McCall. “He took me to the local arenacross races where I got to watch one of my alltime favorite riders. I just ate it up.” The young rider aspired to be a successful motocross athlete. As a kid, he raced individuals who are now well known in the extreme sports society. “One of my most notable achievements was a national race,” said McCall. “There are nationals that happen around the U.S. where they rank up kids in each class. They see how they compete against each other, and they battle to see who the best is. I was in the 50cc expert class and I got fourth. I beat Zach Bell who is currently racing the [American Motorcyclist Association] pro circuit.” Unfortunately, McCall’s racing days came to a temporary halt after the wreck. “It put me in a gnarly concussed state. I didn’t wake up for almost two hours. I went to the hospital and they

Wheels to reels started realigning the bones. That’s when I came back to my senses. My parents said that my eyes were open, but I didn’t speak or move.” The 12-year-old aspiring racer knew the risks associated with motocross, but that never stopped him. However, this injury inevitably set him back. “I’ve had injuries before. It didn’t really phase me long term, but that was the moment where I thought, ‘Let’s take a little break. Let’s take a breather.’ I was being pushed too hard; I was racing motocross once or twice a week, practicing two or three times a week, and since I was about five years old, that’s all my life was.” His focus became his downfall. “I had that grit – the desire to win,” McCall said. “I believe it was that incident that set me back, and I never quite fully recovered.” Looking back at what could have been, McCall sometimes feels remorse for leaving his competitive motocross days behind. “That’s something I constantly think about. It kills me on the inside. Sometimes I get a little emotional looking back at how good I was and where I would be now if I kept going. My dad pushed me to be the best because he knew I could be. Regardless of what did or did not happen, those were still some of the best years of my life and it has turned

me into the unique person I am today.” A NEW CALLING While in his hometown, McCall noticed what appeared to be construction of a motocross track forming next to a soccer field. Upon investigating the track, a bystander approached him and said, “What’s up dude? My name is James Stevenson. You ever heard of BMX dude?” After a short chuckle, McCall said that he thought Bicycle Motocross was a silly sport. The stranger proceeded to show McCall his bike. “I still remember. He had a Kuwahara Laserlite, an import bike from Japan. It was about a $2000 racing bike with carbon fiber components and an aluminum alloy frame, really wicked looking. He let me ride it, and then I just kind of fell in love.” The simple gesture from McCall’s new acquaintance sparked an interest in him. “Before I knew it, I was helping him build the track and shaping jumps,” mentioned McCall. “Six months later, the track was built.” McCall expected BMX to be a lot like motocross. He soon discovered that is not the case. “My very first race there was only maybe 20 riders total, and I went out there and got my butt kicked,” said

McCall, laughing as he recalled the moment. “The fitness that the sport takes is unreal. That’s 45 seconds of everything you’ve got and no mistakes. That inspired me.” Soon McCall gained traction in the sport leading him to victories in local races. He even won a state championship in Arkansas. Afterwards, McCall entered the 14-year-old novice category for the 2009 USA BMX Grand Nationals, the largest BMX race in the world hosted in Tulsa, Oklahoma. “I was going up those jumps in practice and I told my dad, ‘I don’t think I can do this, this is a totally different level,’ and my dad just reminded me, ‘son, you decided to do BMX so you might as well be the best.’ Sure enough, I went out there, gave it all I had, made it to the main event, and I end up winning it.” He continued racing in BMX which led him to an opportunity of a lifetime. “There’s a program where kids between the ages of 14 and 16 who were becoming experts in their division got invited to go out to Chula Vista California to train as Olympians for the upcoming Summer Olympics in 2016,” said McCall. The Olympic program was seeking riders of McCall’s caliber. He then began a rigorous training regimen to prepare for the program. “I was working around the clock,”

April 20, 2018 he said. “I was BMXing and working out all the time. I had a personal trainer that took me to the gym every other day, and the days I wasn’t at the gym, I was doing sprints down the street. That was easily the most physically fit my body has ever been.” His dreams would soon become reality. That was until the incident. “I had some people at the track that were watching me. I got a little cocky and decided to show off after a race, and I hit this big triple that I’ve jumped plenty of times, but this time I decided to land in a manual, which is a wheelie. My bike shot out from under me and I couldn’t unclip with my clip-pedals. It rolled my right leg the complete opposite direction.” McCall was rushed to the hospital. “I broke it in six different places; I had to have multiple surgeries with rods and screws. It totally crushed my dreams. It took almost an entire year to recover. It took five months just to walk again.” Despite his injury, McCall hopped back on his bike eight months later to take on the Grand Nationals again. “If I wanted to keep my sponsors, I had to make an appearance there,” he said. He finished in second place even though he had not fully recovered from his wreck. McCall continued to win races after recovering from his break. Still, McCall recognized a missed opportunity. “At that point I was already too old to do the Junior Development Program.” With his dreams held down in shackles, McCall realized his future may not be as clear as it was when he was a child, spinning tires around a dirt track. Albeit, that did not stop him from finding a new ambition. LOOKING THROUGH A DIFFERENT LENS Behind the massive curtain that was racing, McCall had a dormant passion growing within him. “Since 2009, I’ve been behind a camera doing photography and video work, making short films, commercials – and I’ve always enjoyed it. I just never took it serious.” When he started getting into videography, McCall would have his brother film him ride his bike. McCall would then edit the video clips. “I would make really terrible edits,” he said with a laugh. “They were awful. My family could barely stand to watch them.” He then looked for ways to get better. A television program in the Springdale district of Arkansas accepted McCall as a student. Trent

Kaiserslautern American Jones, an advisor, took him under his wing. “He knew I didn’t have the camera equipment or editing software to make quality content, but he saw potential in me,” said McCall. After an exchange, Jones asked McCall to put together a video about an upcoming race of his. “It talked about behind the scenes – what goes on in a BMX and motocross racer’s mind. I wore my GoPro through all of it, and [ Jones] loved it.” Jones insisted on entering McCall’s short film to a film festival. “So he sent it to a film festival called NFFTY, which stands for National Film Festival for Talented Youth. For any director 26 and under, this is the largest film festival in the world.” To McCall’s surprise, the film festival accepted his video. “[ Jones] called me when I got home one day and I thought he got into a wreck or something because he was panting over the phone and I couldn’t understand him. He was like, ‘Dude, you got accepted into NFFTY. Bro, I’ve never had any of my students get accepted into this festival. You’re going to Seattle, Washington!’” McCall flew to Seattle with Jones to attend the film festival. McCall arrived wearing a bright pink suit skater shoes while everyone else wore more sophisticated apparel. As he passed notable film directors in the crowd, Jones pointed them out in astonishment. “I didn’t know who these guys were, I was never introduced to it,” said McCall. Some of the filmmakers at the festival recognized McCall, asking him if he was the guy who made the BMX video. They then followed up with the remark, “I have never seen GoPro footage make it into a festival before.” “At the time I never knew, but that

was kind of a trashy remark. GoPros are kind of frowned upon at a film festival.” McCall said he wore the GoPro because he wanted the viewers to ‘go along for the ride’ with him. “Either way, I didn’t receive the most positive feedback until the movie was being watched. At the end of the video there was chatter and clapping, and I wasn’t sure if that was a good thing or a bad thing.” After the viewing Jones told McCall that even though the competition had great footage, they lacked what McCall’s video had – a story. “That’s how you’re going to win this,” said Jones to McCall on the last day of the film festival. Jones was confident in McCall’s film and soon the results were in. “Sure enough, at the judge’s panel, I didn’t win it,” said McCall. “The guy that had all of the cool camera movements won it.” Following the judges results, the audience choice awards gave McCall one last glimmer of hope. “The Action Sports category was the last thing of the night,” said McCall. He then heard the announcer, “And for the Action Sports category…” A moment of tension filled the air. “…‘Shred It’ by Lane McCall!” The surprised rookie filmmaker stood up and started to walk toward the stage when Jones looked at him and said, “Dude, fix your tie! Fix your tie!” “I went up there, got my award, got my picture taken, and spoke in front of everyone,” said McCall still sounding surprised. “I didn’t expect it. I honestly thought my work was trash, but my advisor kept telling me that I told a story and that’s the important part.” At that point in his life, McCall knew what he wanted to do as a profession.

Page 13 “I’ll do BMX and motocross for fun, but I want to make film. I want to tell stories.” THE LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL McCall began looking into colleges for filmmaking. He said if he’s going to do it, he wants the best experience. After deciding on the University Of Southern California School Of Cinematic Arts, McCall questioned the financial feasibility. “Even if I were to get a student loan, I’d be in debt for the rest of my life unless I really made it,” he said. The school was going to cost him around $250,000. McCall searched for a way to get his education. “I was looking for a career that offered a steady job that I could rely on, traveling options, and help with school. Bundle those three and you get the military.” McCall went to an Air Force recruiter and began the process to enlist. Due to his previous injuries, he ran into some issues. “The only way I could get in is if I did the Physical Aptitude and Stamina Test,” he said. ”So I had to do the [Special Operations] swimming, running, push-ups, sit-ups, and pull-ups test.” To the recruiter’s disbelief, McCall passed the test and was pushed through to basic training. Through the twists and turns in McCall’s life, he always had the drive to do things to the fullest of his ability even if it ended in an injury. McCall said that drive came from his childhood. “I’m actually named after a famous bull rider called Lane Frost,” said McCall. “He was a world champion who actually died by a bull attack. In the movie 8 Seconds, there was a quote from his dad, Clyde Frost, who said, ‘If you’re going to do it, you might as well be the best, Lane.’ That’s been my motto throughout my life.” McCall’s dad would echo this quote to him any time he faced a new endeavor. It stuck with him even when joining the Air Force. “I came into an [information technology] job that I had zero prior experience doing. I knew the bare bone basic stuff of computers, and the Air Force threw me into this IT career field. I was a little hesitant to jump into it. I wouldn’t say, by any means, that I am the best client systems technician in the Air Force, but if there’s a job that needs to get done, I will find a way to get it done. If I’m going to be doing IT, I might as well be good at it.” After serving his country as an Airman, McCall plans to go to USC to become a filmmaker.

Customs tips for your Germany home business WIESBADEN, GERMANY  A home-based business can be many things — selling aroma candles, kitchen containers or skin care products. Maybe photography or child care is what you like best. But whatever your preference, you have to follow German and military policies for your homebased business. Before beginning your business, contact your installation commercial affairs officer. He or she will tell you about local policies and help you gain permission from the base or garrison commander for the business. On the German side, you will first need to register your small business and then find out whether or not it will be subject to taxation by German authorities. It is highly recommended that you discuss that question with a legal professional. On top of that, you may need an entry in the register of companies and other licenses. From a customs angle, the first point to note is that U.S. Forces-plated vehicles are for your personal use only. Using one as part of a business is illegal. “Examples of abuse would

be if you used your U.S. Army Europe-plated van to deliver goods to customers, transport children as a child care provider or import pottery from Poland for resale,” said Tim Sellman, director of the U.S. Army Europe Customs Executive Agency. Register your business vehicle in the German system to be legal, he advised. The second point is that mail that you send or receive as part of your business must go through a commercial shipping company or the German postal service. The APO system is an entitlement for your personal use and using it to send or receive business wares and letters is not allowed. Third, you must declare any goods intended for resale to German customs when you bring them into the country. “If you buy commercial items in other countries, you must stop at the border and tell German customs your goods are for resale,” Sellman stated. You are not allowed to use AE Form 550-175A, Import/ Export Certificate & Purchase Permit, to avoid paying duty. Goods sold in the commissary, post or base exchange, and AAFES catalog are taxfree so you cannot buy anything there for your business either. Examples could be a

computer for running the business or baking supplies for a cake enterprise. Not surprisingly, using VAT forms to support your business is offlimits too. People who don’t follow the rules risk receiving a hefty fine and tax demand from German authorities, and military administrative or civilian misconduct action as well, where applicable. Here are the main points again: • Do not use tax-free gasoline or a U.S. Army Europeplated POV for business activities. • Do not use the military postal service to send or receive any business-related materials or mail. • Do not use customs entitlements to import or export merchandise, advertising materials or other businessrelated materials. • Do not use any item bought in the PX or commissary for your business. • Do not use VAT forms for any item intended for commercial purposes. • Do not use Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation facilities, such as photo or craft shops, to support your business. • Do not store merchandise in your government quarters or use them as a showroom.

• Almost all business-related income must be reported to both German and American tax authorities. So are you running a business? Do you need a German tax number or even a U.S. tax ID? “To answer these and other questions, talk to your installation commercial affairs officer to be sure where

You will seek for me and find me when you search with all your heart!

Raider baseballers sweep past Vilseck

Kaiserslautern’s baseball team worked out this week in preparation for a key series on the road against Wiesbaden.

Story and photos by Thomas Warner contributing writer Kaiserslautern journeyed to Vilseck and won two baseball games last weekend to bring their season record to 4-2. The Raiders had a midweek game against Frankfurt International School before resuming division play with a road game series Saturday at Wiesbaden. Ronin Sherman was the winning pitcher in game one when Kaiserslautern prevailed, 9-6, despite tapping only five hits. Justice Harper and Nolan Sherman threw in relief after Ronin Sherman allowed five hits and struck out nine Vilseck batters. Kaden Senkbeil had a double and combined with Nolan Sherman for four runs batted in. Colin Zayd drew two walks and scored twice. Six errors by Vilseck hurt their chances but Ronin Sherman’s pitching, with nine strikeouts, also pushed the Raiders to victory. “Vilseck really hit it well in the first game but we got a handle on it and our pitchers held them down in the second one,” said Kaiserslautern head coach Justin Bates. In game two, Kaiserslautern scored 11 runs in the first frame and wound up winning 14-2. The Raiders benefit-

ted from 11 walks issued by Vilseck pitching but also had six players registering hits. Ronin Sherman scored three of the KHS runs while three other players crossed the plate twice. Nolan Sherman, Kenyon Jiles and Taylor Moore combined for seven Raider RBIs in the rout. The Vilseck team was held to just two hits as Nolan Sherman and Kaden Senkbeil combined nicely on the mound. Ramstein splits games against Stuttgart Ramstein High was defeated 9-4 in its first game Saturday vs. Stuttgart but took it personal in game two and evened things with a 14-1 victory. Visiting squad Stuttgart scored runs in every inning but one enroute to the opening win even as starter Kaleb Bellew put up eight strikeouts on the RHS mound. Bellew helped himself with two hits in that loss then had two more in the second-game win. The Royals only got four hits in the morning game but came back with 14 in the subsequent win, when pitchers Nemo Kindle, Chris Guzaldo, and Ethan Smith held Stuttgart batters to just two hits. Luke Brooks had three raps with three runs batted in for RHS while Guzaldo scored four times and joined Bellew with two hits. Kindle walked

and scored three times and the Royals got two RBI from Jeremy LeClair. Ramstein now has a 4-2 record and is scheduled to play again at home, on Southside Field, in a pair of games Saturday against the Vilseck Falcons. SOCCER Kaiserslautern boys, girls win four games The DODEA boys’ champions released some frustration after earlyseason losses when they swept past visiting Alconbury and Lakenheath. Pablo Zorrilla, Tyler Jankowski, Philipp Rimmler, and Jaheim Allen each had at least one goal in the Alconbury win. Zorrilla, Jankowski and Daniel Hilton then had scores to lead the way against Lakenheath. The KHS girls now have a 2-2-1 record after having closer games but still getting wins. They slipped past Alconbury 2-1 and posted a 5-0 win over Lakenheath. “I was really impressed with how those opponents came in and played so hard against a larger school here at Kaiserslautern,” said Lady Raiders’ coach Sue Fitzpatrick. “They competed hard and it was what we needed, to be tested as we continue our season. We had several players absent for various reasons in our previous games and this was the first time we had a full roster.”

Ramstein girls tie Stuttgart; boys win 4-3 Jaden Buelvas had two goals, to go with one each from Chris Sloven and Gavin McMillan, as Ramstein got a league win over the Panthers. Ramstein saw a three-goal lead evaporate but held on to win as goalkeeper Jason Thomas played solid in the nets for the Royals. Sloven also registered an assist on one of the Royals’ goals. The Lady Royals got a first-half goal from Haley Deome but had to settle for a 1-1 tie match. In junior varsity games, Ramstein’s boys won 6-0 but the girls were defeated 4-0. The soccer teams from Ramstein will host SHAPE this weekend but campus construction will again push the games to either Reichenbach-Steegen or the field at Kaiserslautern High. CORRECTION: An earlier story in the KA should have read that Kaiserslautern avoided being swept when the junior varsity girls won 2-1 against Ramstein before spring break. TRACK AND FIELD Kaiserslautern girls third; Ramstein boys first The first meet of the high school season happened at Wiesbaden last weekend and Kaiserslautern was the third best girls team overall despite

SOFTBALL Ramstein topples Stuttgart The Lady Royals scored two wins over Stuttgart as Abby Walker gave complete games on the mound and was backed by high-grade offensive support in the form of 43 total base hits. Walker struck out eight Stuttgart batters in a 24-12 second-game win and yielded several Stuttgart hits but her offensive support was sensational all day. In game two, Ramstein was paced by Abby Hollenbeck’s five base hits plus a home run, triple, and double by Savanna Sparrow. Anni Nozaki also had five base hits with three RBI, while Azure Agricula had four hits and Madison Jarvis had three. Ramstein won the first game 15-6 when Agricula punched a home run among her three hits and four RBI, then the Royals got two hits apiece from Nozaki, Sparrow, and Mikaela McBroom. Sparrow had two triples was joined by Jarvis with two RBI for the winners. Ramstein was also aided by triples from Sydney Smith and Patricia Leon-Guerrero during the doubleheader win. Kaiserslautern splits with Vilseck The Lady Raiders won their opener 13-2 but got tangled up in a closer affair for game two and lost 14-11. Vilseck used six runs in the first inning of game two to position for their win. Ally Alamos had eight strikeouts as the winning pitcher in the opener and walked none. Alamos, Phoenix Wissenand, and Marianna Conklin each had three hits and that trio also combined for 10 runs batted in. “We couldn’t get our bats going and we made some errors that we couldn’t overcome in the second game,” said KHS head coach Jesse Costa. Kaiserslautern got five RBI collectively from Conklin, Whissenand, and Alamos but was in trouble following the big first frame by Vilseck. The Lady Raiders will be on the road at Wiesbaden in a Saturday set.

SWEEPING by Bret Helenius Your house requires a lot of maintenance to keep it up to snuff. Whether you are a renter or owner, there are some standard maintenance chores that need to be taken care of every year, like trimming the hedges, cleaning out the rain gutters and getting your chimney swept. In Germany, having a chimney in your house is fairly common as wood burning stoves and fireplaces are often standard. Just because you don’t have a fireplace, doesn’t mean you don’t need your chimney to be swept. Your heat-

ing system will likely also have a chimney that needs maintenance each year. But did you know that chimney sweeps in Germany are also a sign of good luck and are often invited to weddings to get the nuptials started on the right side of the coin? The origination of why a chimney sweep is good luck is not due to some exotic tale of adventure and magic. Instead it is a more pragmatic reason; in the old days, the chimney sweep (much like today) cleared your chimney and in turn, you would be able to cook because your stove was wood fired.

Additionally, your house would not burn down after a cleaning, so they were thought to bring good luck.

YOUR CHIMNEY CAN BRING GOOD

LUCK

One of the conveniences of chimney sweeps in Germany is that they come to see you every year without having to call them. The same chimney sweep (or company) comes to the house each year to maintain your systems. They will usually stop by before they make their house call to leave you a note that they Please read more on the last page of the properties section
