Though Germany offers plenty of its own Easter markets, it’s always fun to take a trip and experience another country’s traditions.

Due to regulations to prevent the spread of COVID-19, bookings and trips may be cancelled or postponed, and travel to neighboring countries may not be allowed.

Please verify the status before making plans to attend.

uckily, one of the best Easter markets in Europe is located in nearby Prague, Czech Republic.

The Prague Easter markets are open every day in the Old Town Square, Wenceslas Square, and Republic Square through April 24.

These Easter markets are currently on the upswing. They originate from a time before the country’s communist era and have deep religious ties. But under communist rule, the religious aspects were banned. As a result, the markets were not as widely celebrated and could not include many Czech traditions.

Since the fall of communism in 1989, the markets have been reborn. Now Czechs and tourists alike come in the thousands to celebrate the Easter season and the beginning of spring.

The Old Town Square market is the largest of all the

markets. Visitors can catch performances in the afternoons by local children’s choirs, dance groups and folk singers, in addition to the shopping and dining options.

Wenceslas Square, located about five minutes away from Old Town, is slightly smaller. It has about 60 shopping stalls and a group of food stands.

The Republic Square market is a farmer’s market that turns into an Easter market for this season. It is a great place to find fresh food.

The most prominent sight at the markets are the intricately decorated Easter eggs.

The Czechs consider the greatest symbol of Easter to be the egg. It embodies spring and new life. The eggs are handpainted, brightly colored, and can even be decorated with beeswax, straw and feathers. At some stands, Czech ladies dressed in traditional costume will personalize the eggs for you by painting on your name or a special message.

Another popular symbol of Czech Easter that is found throughout the market are Easter “pomlazkas,” braided pussywillow twigs, that are thought to bring health and youth to anyone who is whipped with them.

On Easter, which is celebrated on a Monday in the Czech Republic, boys go caroling throughout town and symbolically whip girls on the legs, according to custom.

At rows of wooden huts, you can find a wide range of other handcrafted goods such as glassware, jewelry, candles, embroidered cloths, dolls and wooden toys.

Shopping is certainly a highlight of the Prague Easter markets, but the trip wouldn’t be complete without trying some of the traditional foods. Large hams roast on spits, barbequed sausages are plentiful, and roast lamb with a special parsley bread stuffing certainly deserves the spotlight of the savory treats.

And don’t fear if you have a sweet tooth. The Prague Easter markets have you covered, as well. Try “Trdelnik,” a sugar coated pastry that is served hot, or “beranek,” cakes baked into the shape of a lamb coated in chocolate icing. There is also “mazanec,” a thick bread that’s covered with an egg glaze and almonds.

To make a full vacation out of your trip to Prague’s Easter market, be sure to check out some of Prague’s gorgeous sites.

The main part of the city is quite compact and easy to get around by foot.

Old Town, where one of the markets is located, is beautiful to explore. The Charles Bridge and Prague Castle, the largest ancient castle in the world, are also must-dos.

EXPERIENCE EVERYTHING THE BLACK FOREST HAS TO OFFER

My family and I have been living in Kaiserslautern for almost three years. We have taken countless day trips and overnight trips, and we have had the privilege of visiting 12 different countries. There is one place on our list, however, that we still haven’t visited.

It is only a couple hours away and has picturesque villages and scenery with an abundance of things to see and do all year round.

So many of our friends have raved about all the things they have seen and done here, yet we have not been. What have we been waiting for? It’s time to visit the Black Forest.

For quite some time, I have been doing research on the Black Forest and all it has to offer. I have spoken with many friends and co-workers about their favorite experiences and what they recommend. But when planning a trip to the Black Forest, I get stuck trying to commit to one town, one hotel or which season we should go. It is a situation where there is so much we want to see and do, we have not decided on doing any of it.

To help others plan their trip, here is a compilation of all the wonderful things the Black Forest has to offer: Hikers at the Herrenwieser Lake at Forbach in the Black Forest.

Accommodations Whether traveling alone, with a friend or with the whole family, there are a number of resources available to help you find a place to stay. The Black Forest Tourism website, www.blackforest-tourism.com, is a fantastic resource for finding accommodations that match your personal preferences.

Choose from farm stays, camping, apartments, wellness hotels or traditional hotels.

Heizmannshof Bed and Breakfast, between the towns of Titisee and Hinterzarten, comes highly recommended. With a two-night stay, you are given the Hochschwarzwald card, complete with 50 free things to do and see including ski lift passes, three hours free at Badeparadies Schwarzwald, lake tours, parks, golf courses and more!

Parks Many people travel to the Black Forest to soak in the peaceful countryside, get a little fresh air, and escape from the bustles of daily life. However, those who want a little more action can find this as well. There are many choices for family-friendly parks, including Europa Park, Funny World, Schwardzwald Park and Steinwasen Park, which boasts having the longest rope bridge in the world.

Pools The whole family will enjoy visiting one of many pools in the Black Forest.

Badeparadies Schwarzwald in Titisee has 16 high-tech slides and wellness areas, and the towns of Buhl, Sasbachwalden, Freudenstadt, Gegenbach, Rottweil, Schluchsee, Weil am Rhein and Lauchringen all offer family pools and relaxation areas open year-round. If you

are more interested in thermal and mineral baths, Baden-Baden claims to have the most beautiful thermal baths in the Black Forest.

Hiking As one of the most popular activities in the Black Forest, visitors can hike thousands of kilometers of trails, varying in length and difficulty. Try one of these popular hiking trails: “Westweg,” meaning “west trail;” “Mitteweg,” meaning “middle route”; “Ostweg,” meaning “east trail;” “Ortenauer Weinpfad,” meaning “Ortenau wine route;” Markgrafler Wine Trail; or “Schluchtensteig,” meaning “gorge trail.” Trails are located all over the Black Forest and are extremely well marked.

Winter activities Winter is also a very active time in the Black Forest with hiking, down-hill skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing and ice skating. Skiers of all levels should feel welcome, as there are slopes for beginners as well as those more experienced. Many people visit the Black Forest High Road for skiing, although there are many opportunities further south where the mountains are a bit larger. Feldberg resort ski area is great for families and beginners and includes a snow park. This area also has a wide variety of restaurants. Triberg, famous for Germany’s highest waterfalls, also has a natural ice skating rink.

Boating The Black Forest is a low mountain range with many small- or medium-sized lakes and reservoirs often used for pedal boats, kayaking, rowboats, canoeing and tourist boats. Boating can be done on a number of lakes including Sulz am Neckar, Titisee and Schluchsee. The Rhine flows around the Black Forest in the south and west, offering tourist boat trip starting points.

Summer coasters Try out an alpine slide while visiting the Black Forest. Gorgeous views and exciting rides make this experience fun for the whole family. “Schwarzwaldhochstrasse,” or “Black Forest High Road,” offers a year-round bobsleigh coaster, bungee trampoline and ski lift in the winter. Another option is the Hasenhorn Coaster in Todtnau, which is open all year and claims to be the most exciting mountain coaster in Germany with a length of 2.9 kilometers.

Beer tour The Badische Staatsbrauerei Rothaus is a brewery located near the village of Grafenhausen in the southern Black Forest. It is one of Germany’s most successful regional breweries. Their most popular product is their pilsner-style beer, Rothaus Tannenzapfle.

Take a tour of this brewery founded in 1791.

Museums There is a wide assortment of museums to visit, including the Black Forest Open Air Museum in Gutach, the Black Forest Museum in Triberg, and the German Clock Museum in Furtwangen. Visitors can also tour many historical mines in towns such as Freiburg, Neuenburg and Freudenstadt.

Spring in the Netherlands is a magnificent time of year. Endless fields of colorful tulips line every street, Amsterdam blossoms with floral displays on every corner and the incomparable Keukenhof flower park with its annual flower parade make this a trip you won’t ever forget. Granted, the liking of flowers might be required but you don’t need to be a botanist for this vacation to awaken your senses with a moderate overdose of nature’s beauty. Tulip season lasts until mid-May. Flower parade This year marks a special anniversary as it’s Keukenhof’s 75th flower parade and trust me, it will be a big one. It’s the world’s only flower parade featuring spring flowers, complemented by extravagant costumes and music. It starts in the seaside resort of Noordwijk on Saturday, April 23, and travels via the flower fields around Lisse to the historic city of Haarlem on the west coast. The route extends over 42km/ 26 miles. There are several locations along the route where extra entertainment is provided in anticipation of the floats’ passing and you will find street food and attractions at every stop. Titled “the most beautiful spring garden in the world” by… well… themselves, Keukenhof boasts about 7 million bulbs planted by roughly 500 gardeners to blow your mind with stunning flower formations. While the focus is on tulips, you will find lots of different flowers, trees and other plants here including hyacinths, daffodils, orchids, roses, carnations, irises, lilies and many more. There are also restaurants, picnic areas and a windmill to make your photos extra Dutch.

General info The park is open daily until May 15. Tickets cost €18.50 per adult and €9 per child. You must book ahead online for a specific time slot and show up during your designated window.

This is to reduce crowds and you will appreciate it greatly as the park is very busy even with this system in place. Car parking is €6, bikes park for free and there are charging stations for e-bikes. Buses and taxis also frequent the park, which is located 35 minutes outside of Amsterdam. The address to enter into your GPS is Stationsweg 166A, 2161 AM Lisse. The best time of day to visit is before 10:30 and after 4p.m. from Monday to Wednesday. Dogs are allowed in but must be kept on a leash at all times.

More things to do in the area If you’re in the mood for further adventuring, you can book a boat cruise (€9/45 min/adults), guided bike tours or rent a bike and go exploring by yourself.

You can even take a helicopter tour for an aerial view of the fields. While Keukenhof is very beautiful, the surrounding fields really add to the experience. Along every road and canal, you will see and smell thousands of tulips of all colors stretching out in front of you. There are guided tours of the park as well but you’re best off buying the guide book and taking it at your own pace. The west coast of the Netherlands has many sandy beaches and interesting museums. A national favorite are, of course, cheese museums. Stop

by Haarlem, Alkmaar or Utrecht for all the beauty of Amsterdam and less of the crowds or relax in a secluded cottage in the countryside. The Netherlands has something for everyone.

The Stuttgart Spring Festival returns to the Cannstatter Wasen as Spring Festival “light.”

After a two-year break due to Corona, the state capital gave the green light on Wednesday, March 2, for a slimmed-down version from April 16 to May 8.

The opening ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. on Holy Saturday, April 16.

To ease the burden on the showmen in view of the difficult times, the opening hours at the fairground have been adjusted: The businesses on the square are now open from 2-10 p.m. on weekdays and from noon to 11 p.m. on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.

In addition, the Stuttgart Spring Festival “light” will not be open on Monday and Tuesday, April 25 and 26, and May 2 and 3. During the German Easter vacations, normal operations will be on Monday and Tuesday.

The concepts are prepared and currently plans are

being made for all possibilities in view of the possible Corona regulations. Andreas Kroll, managing director of in.Stuttgart Veranstaltungsgesellschaft, describes the challenges in planning the spring festival: “The planning is intense and demanding, especially due to the short preparation time. At the moment, we are assuming that the pandemic regulations will be relaxed so that we will not have to additionally fence off the festival grounds. What is clear is that the decision is subject to the Corona Ordinance of March 20.”

GARDENING IN POTS

Less watering. Watering a few plants in pots conserves water and is much less time consuming than watering a plot of land.

Sun. Some plants may have different sun needs than others.

You may notice some plants are not getting enough light, while others need less. You can relocate pots to position them in the best place to receive the optimal amount of sun for that plant.

So let’s get started! First, as a general rule, choose a larger pot for your plants. Small pots dry out quicker and require more watering. Second, consider sunlight.

Most produce requires six hours of sunlight per day. Salad greens can get by with less. Third, fill your pots with a potting mix, adding in a liberal amount of granular

fertilizer and a shovel full or two of compost. Lastly, remember most produce requires a consistent supply of water. Using a self-watering planter is a great way to ensure they are getting the right amount of water. Refilling every few days is the only requirement.

Despite the fact that I do not have much of a green thumb, I have committed to giving it a shot this year. After doing a bit of research, I have decided growing my vegetables in pots is the more reasonable choice for me. Many people choose to grow their vegetables in pots for a variety of reasons, including: Convenience. It does not get any easier than stepping out on your balcony to pluck a cherry tomato or grab a sprig of rosemary.

Soil. Oftentimes, the soil around your home may not be ideal for what you want to grow.

Gardening in pots allows you to control your soil, solving serious soil issues and various plant diseases. Your plants stay healthier and grow faster.

IT’S TIME FOR SPRING CLEANING

It’s April. The flowers are blooming, the birds are singing, and our homes are screaming for a good cleaning. Spring cleaning is an opportunity to freshen up our homes, weed out all the clutter, and get a fresh start for the new season. These tips will make cleaning your spaces a snap and much easier to maintain throughout the year.

Declutter and organize. Everything should have a place in your home. If something does not have a place or you cannot find one, ask yourself, “Do I need this?” Your home and your mind will be much less cluttered with organized spaces. Sort items by their function. Decide where they are most useful, and where they should be stored. If an item really does not serve a purpose, consider it a possible donation. While organizing, do not fill closets, drawers, shelves or bins to their maximum capacity. Leave some extra space. The extra space will keep this area looking neat and clean and also allows room for something new in the future.        

Let it go. We all hold on to things we think we may wear again one day or something we may claim has sentimental value. Ask yourself, “Have I worn this item in the last year? Do I love it? Would I re-buy this item if I were to donate it? Will I miss it if I get rid of it?” If the answer is no, then get rid of it. Do not be afraid to part with the evening gown you wore 12 years ago or the kitchen items you have never used. Chances are, if you have owned it for a while and have not used it, you are not going to ever use it. Why hang on to something someone else could really use or need? Use this same concept when purchasing new items, and ask yourself if you need it or can live without it. You will find yourself with less clutter and more money in your pocket!

Scrub top to bottom, room to room. Now that you have organized your spaces, you can scrub them clean! Work top to bottom, from the ceilings and light fixtures to the hanging pictures, walls and windows and finally the baseboards and floor. Wipe down every surface, including the ones you typically skip over. Windows can be the toughest to clean. Use a microfiber cloth with a water and vinegar solution to ensure your windows are streak free.

Freshen up your textiles. Take down your window treatments, pull off the couch slip cover, and grab your pillow shams and throw blankets. It’s time to wash them all. These are items in your home that are used daily, but you likely never think to clean them. It might be a long process, but it will be worth it!

Don’t forget your fridge and freezer. One of the easiest ways to add a sense of order to chaos in the home is a clean refrigerator and freezer. Toss all the food, condiments and drinks that have been in there too long, including the long-lasting frozen foods. Remove all remaining items and give it a good wipe down. Defrost the freezer to get rid of all the built-up frost.

Maintain. It is inevitable that you will acquire new things, and they will be added to your decluttered spaces. Keep evaluating your areas for things you no longer use or need. If they are items you do not need then go ahead and donate or sell them. Minimizing your spaces will help maintain your efforts from spring cleaning the whole year through. AMAZING TREETOP WALKS

Many people from other countries, particularly the United States, see Germany as a place that truly ‘gets it’ with regard to wellness, concern for environment, and plugging-in with nature. Since 2009, a series of extended, elevated walking routes is putting Deutschland and surrounding countries in the spotlight of lowstress, interactive wellness.

Designed by national park engineers or corporations such as Erlebnis Akademie AG (eak), treetop walks have become a fascination not only with visitors to Deutschland, but also permanent residents. The eak group has now constructed two paths in the Czech Republic and another one in neighboring Slovakia. These upward tiered walk paths built among tall trees provide relaxation and exercise for millions of people every year. They are accessible at various sites for wheelchairs, bicycles, pets, and always for small or large groups. The first one was constructed in

the Bavarian Forest at a cost of €3.5 million and there are now about a dozen of these venues scattered throughout Europe.

The most expensive walkway constructed by eak is on the northern tip of Germany, inland from the Baltic Sea, called Naturerbe Zentrum Ruegen. It cost upwards of €12 million to build in 2013 and includes a massive visitor information center.

Baumwipfelpfad Saarschleife In Saarland, the Baumwipfelpfad Saarschleife gives walkers an amazing view of the Mosele River at one of its loop points and landscape surrounding it. Baumkronenpfad Hoherodskopf Less than an hour west of Frankfurt is Baumkronenpfad Hoherodskopf, which stretches 650 meters and features an expanded, not-so-faraway view of the city of Frankfurt.

This facility is made almost entirely of wood and has multiple attractions to go with the treetop path. www.baumkronenpfad.de

Alongside the Baumkronenpfad path is the Erlebnisberg area, which has zip lines, miniature golf, tree climbing, and several other family oriented activities. www.erlebnisberg-hoherodskopf.de

Baumwipfelpfad Bayerischer Wald Bavaria has several of these pathways in place and while the drive might seem daunting, it is possible to do use the time spent in the area to visit more than one tree park. The Baumwipfelpfad Bayerischer Wald made a claim to be the longest treetop park in the world when it first opened about a decade ago.

Baumwipfelpfad Bayerischer Wald is over 1,300 meters long and is visited by half a million people each year. The route is raised 25 meters from the forest floor but people can choose to head up to the Baumturm, a tower that takes approximately 500 meters to climb and offers a remarkable view of the Bohemian Forest once they arrive. www.baumwipfelpfad.bayern/bayerischer-wald

Skywalk Allgaeu Skywalk Allgaeu is located 50 kilometers from Lake Constance and to the east of Munich. It is easily accessible by U.S. military and dependent visitors to GarmischPartenkirchen. A largely cement and steel construction, it has an elevator to take guests to the top, so they can walk back down with ease. www.skywalk-allgaeu.de

Baumwipfeld Schwarzwald Baumwipfeld Schwarzwald is situated in the Black Forest, about 130 kilometers south of Frankfurt. Like most treetop walks, it puts the user some 25 meters above the ground surface and is not too imposing for people who aren’t good with heights. An extra challenge here is the circular lookout tower path that takes people another 40 meters into the sky. www.baumwipfelpfad-schwarzwald.de/schwarzwald

The listed parks are just a sampling and it will be beneficial to research through travel agencies and the Internet exactly which treetop walk best fits your schedule. Lots of good information is available and you might find friends who have been on some of these paths who can give you a first-hand account of what to expect.

Drive times from the KMC vary depending on location. Pricing varies but is affordable at most parks.

The prospective heights of these unique structures might seem scary to people planning trips but in actuality, the paths are usually not more than 20-30 feet above the ground. Higher spots along these routes are optional as each

location features a signature complex that takes users to the ultimate viewpoints of the surrounding area.

Interesting plant growth and wood scenery make for a replenishing feeling that guests can generate while various animals indigenous to the areas can be spotted on any given day. It is recommended to wear proper clothing at all of these places, based on when you plan to visit, since the higher elevations can get windy and cool.

EASTER LAMB RECIPE

INGREDIENTS

• 125g butter or margarine at room temperature • 125g sugar • 1 tsp of vanilla extract • 1 pinch of salt • 4 eggs • 150g flour • 1 tsp baking powder • 100g peeled, ground almond • 6 drops of bitter almond extract • 6 spoonfuls of milk • Powdered sugar to sprinkle • Lamb cake mold

PREPARATION

1. Preheat oven to 200 degrees Celsius or 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. Stir the butter until fluffy. Add the sugar, vanilla and salt and mix until creamy.

3. Add the eggs and continue to stir until a light cream is formed.

4. Mix in the flour and the baking powder. Mix in almonds, bitter almond extract and the milk.

5. Spray the lamb mold with cooking spray or lightly coat with butter and lightly sprinkle with flour. Place the lamb cake mold onto a baking sheet. Gradually pour the dough into the center of the mold so the dough does not run along the edge.

6. Place in a hot oven for approximately 55 minutes until golden brown.

Remove from the oven and allow the cake to cool completely before gently removing it from the mold. Sprinkle with powdered sugar.

PAPER PLATE SUN CATCHER What you need: 2 paper plates with the center circle cutout; paint/ paintbrush or finger-paints; sticky back plastic contact paper, packing tape or laminating plastic cut into circles slightly larger than the center circles of your plates; things from nature.

What you do: Have your child paint the front side of one plate circle and the back side of the other; put things from nature on the sticky side of the plastic and place the other circle on top sticky side down or put through a laminating machine if you’re using this method; glue the clear circle in between the plate circles. Hang with string and let the sun shine through!

Did you know? Children often spend so much time looking at things in two dimensions (phones, computers, TV, iPads), that they can have weaker oculomotor and visual perceptual skills. Simply taking a walk in the woods and looking at the trees, the trail, the flowers and so forth can have a positive effect on a child’s development of visual processing abilities.

NATURE WEAVING What you need: Cardboard or a piece of a paper bag, yarn, things from nature.

What you do: Cut little slits at the ends of your base, weave the yarn over and under, weave the nature items over and under the yarn.

Did you know? The ability to coordinate both sides of the body is known as bilateral integration. Crafts like weaving and lacing can help a child build a foundation for higher fine motor skills, like shoe tying.

DAY TRIPS TO SOME OF GERMANY’S HIDDEN GEMS augsburg

You’ve likely been to the Champs-élysées in Paris or seen the cathedrals at Strasbourg and Cologne. You’ve surely been able to stand up close, beside Big Ben in London and all those were indeed fabulous trips for you and your family.

But have you ever seen the world’s tallest cathedral spire or looked through the world’s oldest piece of stained glass?

Have you sought out some not so popular destinations during your stay here in Germany?

Germany has so much to offer and many exciting things close to us get overshadowed by all the must-do touristy trips we end up taking during our time here. All of the spots listed below are easily accessible from autobahns, with many hotel and lodging opportunities, and not too costly to undertake. bamberg

The world’s oldest examples of stained glass date back to the 11th century and can be found inside the Augsburg Cathedral in southern Germany, just above Munich. These “Prophet Windows” are extraordinary to glimpse and give the visitor a sense of time and place, considering all the people that have come and gone through those halls since medieval times.

Also in Augsburg is the Fuggerei, a housing estate created by fabled Jakob

the Rich and a community unto itself.

Tour the maze of apartments and other dwellings that became a centerpiece for affordable living while all properties around it routinely escalated in price for €6.50. Afterwards, visit the Riegele craft beer brewery. Family-owned for almost 200 years and with history tracing even further back, Riegele is a place to relax and take inventory of locally created as well as select imported beers that are popular in the region.

Have you ever been to Bamberg?

It’s a small town close to Nuremberg where the long-preserved St. Michael’s (Michelsberg) Monastery is currently part of ongoing revamping and improvements. Parts or all of the church are visible from outside but the church cannot be visited inside at the moment, as comprehensive restoration work is necessary and will probably take some years. Tap into a smoked beer or other refreshment at one of the old town pubs and decide

what else suits your fancy.

Bamberg, with its beer pubs also is home to the often-overlooked Altenburg castle, several other free or inexpensive cultural buildings, and lots of baroque architecture that gives an old-world feel to the city. Bamberg is less than 60 kilometers from Nuremberg, the site of the post World War II criminal trials and makes for another destination while you are in the area.

Castle ruins in Homburg, just a 30-minute drive along A6 toward Saarbruecken, are the best you might have seen, with drawings and plans that show exact layout and floorplans of what used to be there. There are caves that served various purposes and are located underneath the castle complex.

Dress warm for the caves are at pretty much a constant cool temperature for exploring in any season and they can give the visitor an idea of ways of life

from another time period.

There is a fun and spacious park close to downtown with an extremely shallow pond that has a children’s pirate ship at its center. Children can get on tiny boats and use poles to push themselves out to examine the ship. The park also has a rock climbing wall, a miniature golf course, and large, open fields for volleyball, and other outdoor or ball games. Teenagers and younger kids alike will find this place appealing.

Visitors who make the stop at Voelklingen might continue westward across the border to Metz, France. Aside from the well-documented St. Stephen cathedral and another antiquated religious building, St. Pierre aux Nonnains, flea markets, small wineries, bistros and pubs, and a few children-themed places to let the kids blow off steam are scattered throughout the town.

century, twin-towered structure that once stood in the path of invading forces in the region. It features a walking area that winds through the building and several shops and restaurants are situated nearby. Just blocks from the towers is Eglise St. Maximin, one of several churches and noteworthy for its blue-hued, modern stained glass that was installed under the direction of its creator, 1960s artist Jean Cocteau.

Northeast of Kaiserslautern is the Rhine River town of Mainz. It is here that you simply must come before your time is up, for a visit to both the Gutenburg Museum and to trace Martin Luther’s path to reforming religion into what we know it as today. Taking time out to drive south for 30 minutes and see Worms, where Luther appeared in front of Roman emperor Charles V in high court, might inspire you to seek out more Luther-related spots in German towns north of Frankfurt.

Downtown Worms has a walking tour that traces some of Luther’s steps.

middle of downtown. There is a convenient parking garage area with inexpensive day rates plus many restaurants and shops to fall into.

Altstadt is the old town portion of Mainz and a place to find authentic servings of sausage and beer, varying representations of medieval architecture, and lots of walking space for shops, pubs, coffee houses and photo opportunities. A day in Mainz is not enough and it’s probably worth the traveler’s while to book a room somewhere and stretch the experience. The printing press and ancient bible memorabilia take time to get a handle on, so plan accordingly and give yourself time to digest the information.

The Gothic-themed town of Regensburg is also within an hour of Nuremberg and rests peacefully on two sides of the Danube River. Many buildings and monuments in and around the city date back hundreds of years and the area has been given UNESCO Heritage status. The town resembles Kaiserslautern in that it has a university and population of over 150,000 but there is much more of a homey, laid-back feel to this city and the ones adjacent to it.

While in Regensburg, a memorable stopping point is the Historische Wurstkuchl. This is a sausage-themed restaurant that has been serving the regional delicacies for nearly 900 years.

Ask the counter person for a suggestion of a well-known meaty menu item and several senf (mustard) offerings are sure to pique your tastebuds. Also, check out Neupfarrplatz — an underground discovery point boasting exhibits from Roman artifacts to war bunker hideaways.

Best known as the site of post World War II criminal trials, Nuremberg has much more to offer. If art and culture museums are your thing, the history of musical instruments, clothing, fashion, and transportation are all broached in the Germanische National Museum at Nuremburg. Also downtown and worth a few hours of time is the Spielzugmuseum, which is devoted to telling the story and tracing the evolution of toys from the Middle Ages to current times.

Flying a kite. The origin of this tradition is attributed to a local Sunday school teacher, who wanted to explain the idea of Easter to his students by flying a kite meant to represent Jesus’s ascend to heaven. Nowadays, it comes with a huge Good Friday festival all over Bermuda that attracts locals and visitors from across the globe alike with brightly coloured kites and delicious food.

Sweden

Similar to American children on Halloween, Easter is

all about dressing up in several areas of Sweden and some parts of Finland. Kids dress up as old witches and paint freckles on their faces based on folklore that witches used to meet up in Blåkulla and dance with the devil on the Thursday before Easter. Nowadays, they just go from door to door asking for candy offering to bless people’s houses in return.

Australia

In an effort to draw attention to non-native animals such as foxes and rabbits threatening native species, Australia got rid of

the Easter bunny and its chocolate companions in 1991. Instead, they introduced the “Easter Bilby” because bilbies are endangered and need the extra love.

New Zealand

Their Kiwi neighbors took a different approach to their struggle with an overpopulation of rabbits so their Easter tradition is less sweet and includes hunting them with rifles.

The bunnies, that is. Not the Australians.
