African Lion 19: US, Royal Moroccan armed forces continue to build relations Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Milton Hamilton 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs As the annual exercise African Lion 2019 wraps up, approximately 1,100 U.S. service members prepare to redeploy out of the Kingdom of Morocco and Tunisia. Exercise African Lion 19 is a combined, multilateral exercise with aim to improve interoperability and mutual understanding of each nation’s tactics, while demonstrating the strong bond between their militaries. For this exercise, the U.S. joined armed forces from several other countries including Canada, France, Morocco, Senegal, Spain, Tunisia, and the United Kingdom. Representatives from 23 countries around Europe and Africa gathered at Ramstein Air Base, this week to share and collaborate during the 2019 European African Military Nursing Exchange. The four-day event brought together nurses and medical professionals to present and share best practices, lessons learned and innovative healthcare practices pertaining to various military nursing specialties. command surgeon, welcomed the diverse group of health professionals to the event: “We have invited each country to brief us on their current military medical readiness, global healthcare impacts and disaster response capabilities and challenges. “We all ascribe to evidence based medicine and there’s no better time than now to share experiences to improve our military medicine and move towards this goal,” she added. Page 2 AFRICAN LION 19 from Page 1 The 37th Airlift Squadron, the 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron, the 86th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, and the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing helped support the aviation training exercise portion of African Lion 2019 along the Moroccan coastline. During the two-week exercise, U.S. armed forces personnel along with the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces operated out of a number of locations, to include Kenitra Air Base, Morocco. There, the Airmen conducted extensive training, including approximately 120 flying hours, low-level mountain flying, aeromedical evacuation training, 122 joint-personnel drops, 102 static line jumps, and 24 low-cost, low-altitude parachute drops. “We did a low-cost, low-altitude drop, something that can absolutely be done here,” said Capt. Luke Walker, a 37th AS pilot and African Lion 2019 deputy mission commander. “It was windy, but they were very impressed that we only used a small crew, a pilot, co-pilot and two loadmasters, but still were able to hit our point of impact without a navigator.” Walker said the 37th AS contributed to one of the exercises’ main objectives of countering violent-extremist organizations by training handto-hand with the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces on military freefalls; high-altitude, low-opening operations; and the low-cost ways to do airdrops to resupply their forces. The 37th AS also conducted dirtlanding zones to help train the Royal Moroccan military on how to insert and extract their teams, while also being able to resupply their forces with heavier equipment that can’t be airdropped. “This is training that we can’t get back at Ramstein very easily, so it’s great for us,” said Walker. “Our crew gets to train, while also working with Moroccan forces to see how well we can operate in a tactical environment.” This iteration of African Lion was
a year of firsts: the first time Royal Moroccan military personnel conducted free-fall operations onboard a U.S. aircraft; the first time the 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron conducted contested scenarios in the U.S. Africa Command; and the first time Royal Moroccan medical personnel conducted medical scenarios on board a U.S. aircraft during a flight. “Last year was the first time we came to this exercise, but we were only able to table talk and show off our static displays,” said Capt. Sara Hidinger, an 86th AES flight nurse. “This year we were actually able to put the Royal Moroccan medical personnel on a U.S. plane. I was floored at how well they were able to jump into any medical scenario. We were able to build a great relationship with our medical counterparts.” Though the U.S. and Royal Moroccan armed forces aimed to sharpen their own individual skills by training in unfamiliar settings, the main objective was to strengthen relations and for each nation to successfully operate in conjunction with one another. “The Moroccans are a very capable partner and the more we get to practice our operations together, the greater we build our partnership capacity,” said Capt. Joshua Kelsey, a 37th AS pilot and African Lion 2019 mission commander. While African Lion 2019 enabled the training of U.S., Moroccan, Tunisian and other allied and partner forces, it was also reinforced lessons learned from past African Lion exercises and provided a foundation and structure for future military cooperation and engagements. “It’s an absolute benefit for us,” said Kelsey. “We get to exercise ourselves in a way that we don’t get to do locally. Coming here to Morocco is unique in and of itself.” Kelsey said that African Lion 2019 was a success and he looks forward to integrating with the Royal Moroccan forces next year.

How does the KMC officially celebrate Earth Day 2019? The most common practice is to plant new trees, which is also the biggest event being held on Ramstein Air Base. This year, about 80 students and teachers will participate to plant approximately 800 trees. This is Ramstein’s contribution towards a goal to plant 7.8 billion trees — one for every person on the planet — until Earth Day 2020, which marks the 50th anniversary of the Earth Day celebration. Every year Earth Day campaigners call for events with an annual theme. In the U.S., the 2019 Earth Day theme is “Protect our species.” The millions of species that we know and love and many more that we still have not discovered are nature’s gift to the planet. Unfortunately, human beings have irrevocably altered the balance of nature, and the world is now facing a mass extinction of species. It is the greatest rate of extinction since we lost the dinosaurs 60 million years ago. Scientists are warning us that thousands of species may become extinct this year alone. But unlike the dinosaurs, the rapid extinction of species in our world is the result of human development. There are many causes to this horrific prediction: climate change, deforestation, habitat loss, pollution, unsustainable agriculture, plastics, and pesticides just to name a few. If we do not act now, extinction may be our most enduring legacy. Earth Day 2019 is dedicated to providing information and inspiration needed to fundamentally change human attitude and our actions which endanger millions of species.

The Ramstein Visitor Control Center now issues passes with a scannable barcode.
These passes are valid for one to three days and may be used at any KMC Air Force or KMC Army installation. Any request longer than three days will require customers to receive a long-term pass. Customers should understand with the process, waiting times may be longer than usual. The VCC opens at 6 a.m. and closes at 10 p.m., seven days a week. After hours, customers may still sign in guests at the west gate. The sponsor must be registered in IACS to sign in visitors. A Hidden Hero: Airman is recognized as Airlifter of the Week Story and photo by Senior Airman Sara Voigt 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Staff Sgt. Cody P. Gorman, 86th Airlift Wing Safety Office weapons safety manager, was recognized as Airlifter of the Week, April 4. A hidden hero, Gorman is a critical member of the 86th AW team. As a weapons safety manager, he oversees U.S. Air Forces in Europe’s largest collection of explosive site plans, allocating for the storage of 384 million dollars in combat assets. Gorman’s responsibility doesn’t stop there. He trains 89 additional duty weapons safety representatives to ensure that units follow safety policies and procedures throughout the wing. By constantly striving to improve others, Gorman continuously excels above his peers and encompasses Air Force values throughout his day-to-day life. What separates Gorman from his peers, even more so, is his selfless desire to give back to the community. On top of being an outstanding Airman at the wing safety office, Gorman also routinely volunteers at the Fisher House. He provides meals to dislocated families and ensures the Fisher House’s MILITARY NURSING EXCHANGE from Page 1 orative environment that promotes hands-on training scenarios. Resiliency personified by Airman 1st Class Kristof J. Rixmann 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Retired Staff Sgt. Jason Morgan shared his uplifting story with active-duty servicemembers on Ramstein Air Base, April 3. Morgan was the guest speaker during a resiliency event organized by U.S. Air Force Col. John P. Zapata, 86th Mission Support Group commander, and Technical Sgt. Destini Yaden, Deployment Transition Center resiliency technician. In 1999, Morgan was thrown from his vehicle after it careened off a cliff during a counter narcotics mission in South America. The vehicle rolled over Morgan and caused life-threatening injuries, including a debilitating spinal cord injury. Morgan, a Texas native, would spend half of the next seven years recovering in the hospital, unsure if he would ever be well again. “I spent 11 months in my last trip to the hospital without so much as going outside,” said Morgan. “I grew frustrated as doctors told me I’d never walk again, and really, I got tired of people telling me I couldn’t do stuff. I felt like I lost my sense of purpose.” Morgan believes the staggering 22 U.S. veteran suicides per day is closely tied to the individual’s lost sense of purpose in life. Morgan said he knew he had to find purpose in his life again. “Well, first and foremost, I found a great sense of purpose in my two boys,” said Morgan. “I had to relearn how to be a father because now I’m in a wheelchair. For a while I couldn’t do many things other fathers and sons get to do so I had to find other ways.” Morgan discovered by tapping into his competitive spirit he would not only further his sense of purpose but also serve as a source of inspiration for his two children. Despite being paralyzed from the waist down, Morgan began swimming, snow skiing and whitewater rafting. Morgan would also become a regular competitor and medalist in the U.S. Warrior Games, a jointforce, Olympic-style competition open to wounded, ill and injured U.S. military members and veterans. He didn’t stop there. “As I was competing for the Warrior Games, a great organiza-

tion asked to sponsor me in the next Marine Corp Marathon,” said Morgan. “One of the things on my bucket list was to always do a marathon. In my unit we had a saying that you had to run 30 miles on your 30th birthday. I was hurt when I was 29. So, I told my unit when I turn 40 I’ll do a marathon. I thought I would but before I knew it my 40th birthday came and went. So, when this organization came to me I realized I could finally do this marathon I’ve always wanted to do.” Morgan trained for the next five months; exercising every day. “I was really excited,” said Morgan. “I was averaging a seven and a half minute mile and was on track for a sub-three hour marathon. I felt great throughout my training. Well, about six weeks out from the marathon I had a blister on my heel. In a matter of hours my entire ankle swelled and so I immediately went to the Emergency Room. I knew something was definitely wrong.” Doctors informed Morgan he had an infection in his bone. They assured him, however, the operation would be non-invasive and predicted no more than a one night stay in the hospital. Morgan was relieved by the news as the marathon was around the corner and feared missing out on additional training. He received an MRI and returned
to the hospital three days later for the results. “So, the doctor came back into the room and said ‘I don’t really know how to tell you this but I think our best bet is to amputate your leg. It’s a lot worse than we thought,’” said Morgan. “When he said that I couldn’t believe it. Things were going good. I was getting ready to do this marathon. I actually started walking on longlegged braces which the doctors said I would never be able to do. My kids were doing great and I felt like I had everything in my life together. All I could say was, ‘are you serious?’” Doctors told him they could attempt to save the leg but the odds of a successful surgery left them skeptical. If, by chance, the surgery was even successful the recovery would result in an additional year spent in the hospital. Morgan was given ten minutes to make an unequivocal life-changing decision. Fortunately his service dog, Nepal, sensed the anxiety Morgan experienced with this decision. “When you have a dog, I have my dog with me 24/7, you definitely can learn how to read each other,” said Morgan. “I didn’t even give him the command but he kind of just went up on my lap. He can sense whenever I’m hurt or sad.”
In that moment Nepal gave Morgan a sense of relief and a moment to think clearly. I knew at that time the decision I had to make wasn’t really whether or not I keep my leg,” said Morgan. “I didn’t want to take a chance on losing my life, as others have with bone infections, nor do I want to spend another year in the hospital. Those days are behind me. Really, the question I had to ask myself was am I going to go back to that dark place I was in when I first became paralyzed and live that life, or allow them to take my leg and continue to live out my dream and complete this marathon.” The answer was clear to Morgan. He informed the doctor he wanted the leg amputated the next day because he had a marathon to compete in. Following the amputation, Morgan went through intense physical rehabilitation sessions led by a team of physical therapists that knew how important this marathon was to him. Weeks later, Morgan endured 45 mile-per-hour winds and heavy rain in the midst of Hurricane Sandy before crossing the finish line of the Marine Corp Marathon in Washington, D.C. Motorcycle safety for KMC riders by Tech. Sgt. Jennifer Smith 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 86th Airlift Wing Safety Office held the annual pre-season motorcycle safety brief for motorcyclists at the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center on Ramstein Air Base, March 15. The briefing covered safety precautions, German road laws, proper protective gear to wear while riding, and testimonies from guest speakers. “Riders should practice both mental and physical riding skills to be successful out on the road,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Henrie Young, occupational safety representative. “The mental part of riding is actually more important than the physical aspect in many ways. Being able to identify a hazard before it becomes a problem is one of the keys to safe riding.” After discussing mental awareness, physical capabilities were addressed. “The physical part of riding is important as well, because motor skills diminish without practice,” said Young. “Practicing life-saving maneuvers like braking and swerving in a

safe environment, like a vacant parking lot, can be invaluable in an emergency situation.”
Protective gear was also a topic of discussion. Personal protective gear includes a long sleeved shirt,
long pants, and ankle covering shoes or boots, as well as Department of Transportation, Snell Memorial Foundation, or Economic Community of Europe helmets. Mental and physical readiness, along with protective gear, are all important elements of motorcycle safety. “Motorcycle safety is important because the inherent risk involved in riding a motorcycle is much higher than driving in your average car,” said Young. “You are exposed to the elements, are much smaller than vehicles around you, and unfortunately are something vehicle operators may not notice until the last minute.” Active duty servicemembers who possess a valid motorcycle license and personally own a motorcycle, are eligible to participate in future trainings. Civilian personnel along with eligible dependents are also able to participate in the training on a space-available basis. Alcohol Awareness Month focuses on education, treatment by Mary Ann Davis U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz In the movies, you can always spot an alcoholic — it’s your stereotypical down-and-out drunk passed out at a bar or on the street corner clutching a bottle of booze in a paper bag. In reality, high-functioning alcoholics can be anyone — a Soldier, spouse, friend or even yourself. The difference is movie magic doesn’t fix a person with a reallife Alcohol Use Disorder, only education, available programs and resources will. During April’s Alcohol Awareness Month, the U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Army Substance Abuse Program places emphasis on the awareness and education of the causes and effects of alcoholism and alcohol abuse and where people can go for help. “While drinking alcohol is not necessarily a problem — drinking too much can cause a wide range of issues and increase your risk of related problems,” explained Velia Bravo-Johnson, garrison ASAP intern. “Some people are in denial that they have a problem with alcohol, this can make it difficult for family and friends to acknowledge the severity of the situation. We want to provide resources for those in need of assistance.” Some people simply don’t pay attention to how much alcohol they are consuming, she said. “For example, if someone is drinking a Long Island Iced Tea and I ask the person how many drinks he or she had — the typical answer is one, but the reality is there are four or five shots of alcohol in that one glass,” the ASAP intern clarified. “That one large, mixed drink exceeds the amount of a standard drink a person should consume in an hour. The idea is to promote responsible drinking and being knowledgeable about how much you consume.” Many times, drinking can be an expectation at gatherings — especially during summer fests, long weekends and holiday get-togethers, which could lead to excessive drinking. People need to gauge their alcohol tolerance, drink moderately and ensure they don’t get behind the wheel of a vehicle, if they have been drinking. If you are hosting a party, don’t overserve alcohol to your guests, offer alcohol-free alternatives and don’t allow guests who have been drinking to get behind the wheel. away at the stigma that getting help with alcohol issues is a career ender, because now Soldiers can seek alcohol-related behavioral healthcare without mandatory enrollment in a substance abuse treatment program. Army Secretary Mark T. Esper signed a directive March 25 that forms two tracks for substance abuse care: voluntary and mandatory. Soldiers can self-refer for voluntary alcoholrelated behavioral healthcare, which won’t affect their deployment status and doesn’t impose command notification like the mandatory treatment track does. Soldiers enter mandatory substance use disorder treatment if a substance use-related incident occurs. Under the voluntary care track, treatment is not tied to a disciplinary process and is an option a Soldier can take before a career-impacting event occurs. Soldiers in the voluntary care track may discontinue care at any time and can also choose to reenter care at any time. “This is a huge historical policy change that will address a long-standing barrier to Soldiers engaging in alcohol-related treatment,” said Jill M. Londagin, the Army Substance
Use Disorder Clinical Care Program director. “Alcohol is by far the most abused substance in the Army. Approximately 22 percent of Soldiers report problematic alcohol use on Post Deployment Health Reassessments. However, less than two percent receive substance abuse treatment. This is due, in part, because historic Department of Defense and Army substance abuse treatment policies and practices discouraged Soldiers from self-referring for alcohol abuse care.” In addition to the new directive, Soldiers in the Kaiserslautern Military Community can contact the ASAP for prevention education, while the Substance Use Disorder Clinical Care provides treatment for Army personnel. Air Force members can contact the Alcohol/Drug Abuse Prevention & Treatment facility for services. There are also a wide variety of counseling services available to include behavioral health, Military & Family Life Counseling and military chaplains. Preventing sexual assault begins with you by Mary Ann Davis U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz If you could prevent a crime that affects one in three women and one in six men from happening, could you? Well, you can. Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month is an annual effort to increase knowledge and recognition about the scope and impact of sexual assault to help prevent these crimes from occurring. This year’s SAAPM theme is “Protecting Our People Protects Our Mission.” It’s a call to action for our community members to work even harder to reduce, with the hope of eventually eliminating, sexual assault in our Armed Forces, said Amber Hutsell, U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz Sexual Harassment/Assault Response & Prevention Victim Advocate. “Since sexual assault offenses are so personal in nature, victims may not report their incidents for several reasons: fear of retaliation or retribution, fear of others finding out, embarrassment, shame, thoughts that ‘they deserved it,’ and normalization of the behavior are common reasons why victims won’t report a sexual assault,” she said. “We just want to make sure that victims seeking assistance are taken care of.” There are two different reporting options available to military members and family members who are victims of sexual assault — restricted and unrestricted, Hutsell said. RESILIENCY from Page 6 “I remember at one point during the race I was going uphill and into the wind,” said Morgan. “I’m going as hard as I can and out of the corner of my eye I see this fiveyear-old kid walking faster than I was pushing. He was giving me that look like, ‘Oh yeah, keep it up there buddy. You’re doin’ good.’ It was kind of frustrating but I did catch him on the downhill, I promise you that.” Morgan said he couldn’t help but think how different he can live his life knowing he completed what he set out to do against such incredible odds. Completing the marathon was a huge boost in his life, he said. Morgan believes one of the biggest compliments he’s received is when his son, U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Grant Morgan,
“For active-duty military members and their dependents 18 years and older, they can contact our SHARP 24/7 hotline at 0631-413-7280 or 53-SHARP to reach a Sexual Assault Response Coordinator or report it to their unit or brigade-level SARC or victim advocate. Individuals can also report straight to an emergency room; however, if possible, should go to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, so their ability to file a restricted report is still an option. People can call the military police or Polizei as well. Civilian employee options are a little different, but the SHARP office can work with them to explain their options.” In 2018, there were 75 unrestricted cases reported in the garrison footprint. During fiscal 2017, the military had 24 percent of restricted reports convert to unrestricted. In the early years of the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response program, that percentage was only 12 to 15. During fiscal year 2017, there were 3,567 military subjects whose cases were referred, meaning they were reviewed by military commanders for action. In those cases, there was sufficient evidence of a crime, she said. So how can we prevent sexual assaults from occurring? Hutsell said intervention is key. “Confront inappropriate behavior as soon as it begins. Be a good bystander. If you see something, say and do something. Do not be afraid to stop a potential incident 82nd Security Forces Squadron entry controller, followed in his footsteps by enlisting in the U.S. Air Force two years ago. “There was an article written about my son he showed me recently,” said Morgan. “I couldn’t help but get teary-eyed when I saw at the end there was a quote by him which read, ‘I just want to pick up where my dad left off.’ To hear those words from him I just thought to myself, ‘You know what? I did do it right.’” In the final moments of his speech during this resiliency event, Morgan had a message for his audience. “It’s amazing, this country that we live in. I’m so grateful to live in a country where we’re appreciated for our service. Don’t take it for granted. We’re in the best military in the world because we live in the best country in the world.”

Being a good bystanders can also mean contacting the appropriate authorities, whether that is an establishment manager or the authorities, the SHARP victim advocate advised. “You should also watch your alcohol consumption and keep your drinks within your sight,” she said. “Watch out for your friends and others around you — we are all family overseas. And lastly, help to build a culture to eliminate the problem.” This month, a SAAPM “What Were They Wearing” exhibit took place in the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center. The exhibit is an interactive experience to demonstrate that what people wear have nothing to do with sexual assault or sexual harassment. Mannequins were dressed in clothes that were either similar or actual clothing people were wearing when they were sexually assaulted or harassed. The exhibit is designed to end victim blaming and place the accountability on the perpetrators of the crimes, not the victims — no matter what they were wearing. “We also had a place for people to write cards of support to our survivors. For those who are worried about what to write — a simple, ‘You are brave’ can help immensely,” Hutsell said. “We post these on our Survivor Card Wall in our Kleber
office for our survivors. Many have said how much it helps them feel better about their decision to come forward.” SHARP also handed out teal ribbons to signify those who want to “Be Part of the Solution.” Individuals can also pledge that they will be a good bystander and support and respect sexual assault survivors. People are encouraged to write their name and/or a message and post it on their boards to be a part of the display. Assistance is also available through the Department of Defense Safe Helpline at 877-995-5247 or at safehelpline.org. “Establishing an appropriate culture to help eliminate sexual assault involves a commitment from everyone,” Hutsell said. “Let’s use this opportunity to learn, understand and prevent sexual assault.” Staff Sergeant (Ret.) Jason Morgan is a competitive athlete and member of the team that represented the Air Force at the inaugural Warrior Games. Despite constant pain in his paralyzed legs, Morgan earned a silver medal in the 1,500 meter wheelchair race and also competed in the 400 meter, the backstroke and wheelchair basketball events. Sergeant Morgan is a former Air Force combat meteorologist in the special operations field. It was on a mission to South America in 1999 where the vehicle he was riding rolled down a ravine, throwing him from the vehicle and landing on top of him. His back was crushed and his lungs collapsed. Six weeks later, he awoke from an induced coma. “The doctors told me that I suffered a spinal cord injury and would never walk again,” Morgan said. “It’s been 10 years since I was hurt but I have found ways to compete.” Morgan continues to train, is scheduled to race a full marathon and plans to join the U.S. Paralympics team in the future. “Out of anything I’ve done, this has been the greatest thing for me,” he said. “This event has made me feel like a part of the Air Force again.”

Germans observe various Easter traditions

The Easter holidays are just around the corner. In Germany, Easter week starts with Holy Thursday, which Germans call “Gruendonnerstag,” or green Thursday. The word green is not associated with the color but rather with the old German verb “grienen,” which means “to bemoan.” Some people keep up the tradition and eat green vegetables that day, preferably spinach. The following day, Good Friday (April 19), is an official German holiday. For Protestants
it is one of the most important religious holidays, while Roman Catholics strictly observe it as a day of fasting. Germans celebrate Easter on two days, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday. A few weeks before Easter, decorations are put up inside the house and outdoors. It is most common to hang up Easter eggs and other ornaments on forsythia branches, willow catkins and other trees, which are put up in vases, or grow in the backyards. Easter Sunday usually starts with the hunt for Easter eggs and Easter baskets, the biggest joy for children who still believe the Easter Bunny delivers eggs, chocolate and candy. Parents hide the Easter surprises in the most spectacular places such as the oven, washing machine, closets, and of course in the garden. Another tradition is the Easter walk through the woods, where little ones may find some more eggs, the Easter Bunny accidentally “lost.” A popular meal served on Easter is roast lamb. According to Christians, the lamb is the symbol for the crucifixion and the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. The Easter lamb has its origin in a 2,000-year-old Jewish custom, and in 1265, the lamb appeared as a pastry for the first time. Today, bakeries offer Easter lamb pastries as well as Easter leavened wreaths with a hardboiled colored egg in the middle. The Easter egg had its begin-
nings in the ancient past. Early philosophers gave special significance to the oval shape of elemental things, from the raindrop to the seed, and the oval Easter egg is an outgrowth of ancient pagan rites associated with the rebirth of nature. For the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans, the egg was a symbol of fertility and life. They put clay and marble eggs in graves to facilitate the dead passing into another world. In China 5,000 years ago, it was tradition to give away decorated eggs for the beginning of spring. In Finland, people claim that the universe derived from one giant egg. In Persia, eggs were only combined with spring festivities, because during the season of the new sun, poultry started laying eggs again. It has not been explored why eggs play such a big role on Easter. A reason might be the strict prohibition by church to eat eggs during Lent. In former times, decorated eggs were given as gifts through-

out the year. Later it was just done on Easter. It was not only the Easter Bunny giving away eggs, but also storks, foxes and donkeys were the bearers of eggs in mythology. In 1682, the Easter Bunny was mentioned for the first time. When the production of Easter chocolate and bunnies as well as the printing of Easter picture books and postcards began around 1850, the long-eared bunny became an Easter trademark. In some towns, Easter markets are set up, where vendors sell handcrafted decorations, candles, artificial flowers, stuffed animals and candy. On Easter Sunday, the Kaiserslautern Gartenschau will open at 9 a.m. with an RPR1sponsored Easter egg hunt. You will not only find chocolate easter bunnies but also special prizes. The RPR1 mascot “Baer” will support the search. At 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., the Lauter Steine e.V., a Lego model builder association, offers participation to children 8 to 16 years of age to oversee the construction of Washington D.C.’s Capitol. Engineering Classes Children ages 4+ will be introduced to the fundamentals of engineering. Students will have an opportunity to build electrical engines, working draw-bridges, fully functioning cranes and basic gear boxes. Students will also be introduced to engineering concepts using pneumatic principles and equipment. All of this is done using the registered brand of Fischertechnik materials. Worksheets will be handed out so that children can expand their understanding of learned concepts outside of the classroom. Sweeping your chimney can bring good luck By FindItGuide.com Your house re-quires a lot of maintenance to keep it up to snuff. Whether you are a renter or owner, there are some standard maintenance chores that need to be taken care of every year, like trimming the hedges, cleaning out the rain gutters and getting your chimney swept. In Germany, having a chimney in your house is fairly common as wood burning stoves and fireplaces are often standard. Just because you don’t have a fireplace, doesn’t mean you don’t need your chimney to be swept. Your heating system will likely also have a chimney that needs maintenance each year. But did you know that chimney sweeps in Germany are also a sign of good luck and are often invited to weddings to get the nuptials started on the right side of the coin? The origination of why a chimney sweep is good luck is not due to some exotic tale of adventure and magic. Instead it is a more pragmatic reason; in the old days, the chimney sweep (much like today) cleared your chimney and in turn, you would be able to cook because your stove
was wood fired. Additionally, your house would not burn down after a cleaning, so they were thought to bring good luck. One of the conveniences of chimney sweeps in Germany is that they come to see you every year without having to call them. The same chimney sweep (or company) comes to the house each year to maintain your systems. They will usually stop by before they make their house call to leave you a note that they will be by on a certain date
and time in the near future. Of course, it would be smart to ask your neighbors in the area if they know of a sweep that comes around each year just to be safe. If not, you should call your local chimney sweep to inquire (and maybe get a German speaking friend/neighbor to help you). Sweeps in Germany also do much more than just clean the chimney. They also check your furnace exhaust, check for gas leaks and look for potential problems with your heating system. Some sweeps will show up in traditional top hat and button down shirt, but don’t let that fool you. They often bring sophisticated equipment as well for communicating with your heating system. If you are lucky enough to see a chimney sweep with traditional uniform that has silver buttons, ask them if you can turn one of their buttons for good luck. As a result of this tradition, you may notice chimney sweeps are often missing buttons on their uniforms!

When I had initially planned my trip, I thought I was merely going to pass through England on my drive north but since we just spent a few parts of this series in the south, you guessed correctly that it took me a while to actually get to the north. However, once I had arrived in the Highlands, all the pieces came together and I felt right at home surrounded by mellow mountains, fields of heather and the infamous Lochs that simultaneously radiate absolute calmness and an untameable wildness if the wind blows just right.
The following destinations can all be visited with one round trip in as little as a few days. Loch Lomond The bonnie bonnie banks of Loch Lomond inspired a very dramatic song (that I strongly recommend putting on your road trip playlist) and you will not question why it’s so famous once you get there. A narrow
windy road (there is only one road north so don’t worry about getting on the wrong one) takes you along said bonnie banks with plenty of opportunities to pull over and enjoy the glorious view. The hills framing the water are merely a hint of what to expect from your next stop.
Glen Coe This valley, or glen, is often spelled Glencoe but no matter how you spell it, it is one of the absolute must-sees in Scotland. Follow signs for Fort William and you can’t miss it. The drive leads straight through the remains of an ancient volcano, which erupted around 420 million years ago, with sheep and mountains to each side. In the winter, you have a good chance of seeing some snow and in the summer you might even see a patch of green here and there. However, these classic brown and yellow tones will always be unique for Scotland to me so they hold a special place in my heart. Aside from a lonely cabin or two and a few hikers, the glen remains untouched by humans and the only reminder of civilization is this one road.
Glennfinnan Viaduct Any Harry Potter fans out there? This little-known indie film shot one of its most iconic scenes right here in Scotland. There is a viewpoint from which you can see the bridge with modern trains crossing it every few minutes. Twice a day, you can also watch a steam train cross it and picture yourself eating some Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Jelly Belly Beans on your way to Hogwarts. You can also ride the Jacobite Steam Train from Fort William To Mallaig and back for the ultimate Harry Potter experience. The viewpoint is only a little detour, circa thirty minutes from Fort William, and I suggest driving back to Fort William and following the GPS to Skye from there to avoid a ferry trip.
Eilean Donan Castle This 13th century castle is right next to the road yet once you step onto its premises, you will feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Admission costs £10 but even if you’re not interested in going inside, it’s still worth pulling over and simply admiring the majestic building and its gorgeous backdrop. The café has delicious scones and light meals with large windows to enjoy the view from if the weather isn’t on your side.
