AMC commander visits Ramstein

eneral Darren W. McDew, Air Mobility Command commander, visited March 28 through April 2 on Ramstein. During his visit, he held an all-call for more than 500 Airmen from U.S. Air Forces in Europe, 3rd Air Force, and the Ramstein wings. At the all-call, the general discussed the value of bringing forward different outlooks to bolster innovation. “We need to include different perspectives to keep moving forward,” he said. “Doing things the same way we always have isn’t going to solve a lot of our problems.” McDew emphasized the importance of living the Air Force core values and knowing their full meanings:

integrity ﬁrst, service before self and excellence in all we do. “It’s important to get back to those values,” he said. The general also spoke of plans for ﬁscal year 2015 with budget constraints. McDew reiterated the headquarters Air Force position that there will be no force shaping in the upcoming year. “If we don’t get the requested budget, something has to be cut,” McDew said. “It won’t be people. It will stop us from growing, but we’re not going to cut people.” McDew explained the impact each Airman has on the Air Force, and the importance of diversity and inclusion. “It is all about performance,” McDew said. “It is all about getting the right and best people to the table ... if you don't capture diverse perspectives, you don’t have

remember the day like it was yesterday — my heart beat echoed in my head as I attempted to dry my sweaty hands on my jeans. I was 21 years old, sitting in a Korean courtroom, waiting to be questioned by prosecutors. How I ended up here was unreal. Just a few months ago I was happy; I had a loving husband, amazing friends and arguably the greatest job in the Air Force, but the color in my world had been stolen. This is my story of how I was sexually assaulted. After a year at my first duty station, I wanted to further my career so I volunteered for a short tour to Korea. I soon received an assignment to Osan Air Base as an American Forces Network broadcaster. I knew it would be difficult because my husband was unable to join me, but we agreed it was a great opportunity. Upon arriving in Korea, I quickly learned the assignment was no easy task. The days were long and work never seemed to stop. It wasn’t until halfway through my tour that I finally made time to volunteer off-base with a fellow co-worker. We spent the day helping members in the local community practice their English-speaking skills. After lunch, my coworker and I said our goodbyes to the Koreans and

headed back to base. The taxi dropped us off at the street right in front of the base. I paid the driver, thanked him and waved goodbye to my buddy as he left to play pool off-base. Walking toward base, I noticed a button on my coat was loose, so I stopped at a tailor shop a few feet from the gate entrance. I walked in, greeted the worker with “Annyeonghaseyo,” and asked if he could fix my button. He nodded and took the coat from me. When he finished, I put it on and asked how much. He kept saying no charge and proceeded to get closer to me. The next few minutes became dark. He proceeded to take advantage of me, and I just froze. I didn’t know what to do — I was in shock. I couldn’t believe what was happening. Once I snapped to, I ran as fast as I could toward base. I knew what had just happened to me wasn’t right, and my mind and body didn’t want to believe it. It felt like my brain kept telling me, there’s no way it could have happened. But it did. As I sat in my room, replaying the events in my head, I heard the recognizable beeping sound coming from my computer. It was my husband calling me via Skype. I answered and realizing something was bothering me, he asked what was wrong. Hesitating, I slowly began to tell him what happened that day. I could see the anger and frustration in his eyes — he wanted so badly to hug and kiss me

and tell me everything was going to be all right, but he couldn’t. The following day, I took his advice and talked to my supervisor about the events that occurred. While comforting me, she asked what I wanted to do and explained my options. We walked to the Sexual Assault Response Coordinator’s office, and the lieutenant there escorted me to the (Air Force) Office of Special Investigations, where they took my statement. The OSI agents were very understanding and explained that because this was a Korean national, I would have to file a report with the Korean National Police. I thought it would end there, but that was only the beginning. The SARC informed me this would be a long pro-

Soon an Air Force captain from the SVC contacted me. As a lawyer, he would help me through any legal issues and be available for support. Finally, the day arrived when I would have to face the man who assaulted me. At the Korean National Police Station, we would argue the truth over the events of that day. harassment flourishes, there is a higher chance of sexual assaults.” Spreading knowledge from the youngest Airmen to the highest ranking leaders is a step in the right direction for prevention, Schott said. “Every Airman has a role to play in the prevention of sexual assault,” said Chief Master Sgt. Joanne Bass, 86th Operations Group superintendent. “The first step in prevention is education and awareness. The second step, the most critical step, is to have the courage to intervene when you see something that isn't right.” There will be an information booth provided by the SARC and Sexual Harassment-Assault Response and Prevention offices from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., April 10 at the KMCC food court. There will also be a 5K run starting at 8 a.m. April 25 at the Ramstein Southside Fitness Center. This event is open to all common access card holders. Throughout the month, SARC office staff members and victim advocates in the KMC area will provide mandatory annual training to Air Force units. Airmen fired up for friendly 'fight'

Schwier-Morales 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs CAMPIA TURZII, Romania — The skies above Campia Turzii, Romania, would look calm to anybody on the ground, but above the clouds was a thunderstorm of fighter pilots, shouting ,“he's on my six, shake him, pull up, pull up, nice — lets get them, missile lock, missile one, away.” At the end of the day, all the jets in the sky landed on the runway safely, but the thrill of what they went through still excited and surprised these pilots, even after 15 years of experience.

“We just had a once-ina-lifetime opportunity to fly against the Romanian MiG21 fighter pilots today,” said Lt. Col. David Berkland, 480th Fighter Squadron commander. Berkland, an F-16CJ Fighting Falcon pilot, and three other U.S. pilots shook hands with four Romanian MiG-21 pilots and talked about the lessons learned after landing. “Hopefully it was just as rewarding for the Romanian pilots,” Berkland said. "We all have a lot of learning to do. We debriefed and talked about what we saw, what we did and what we could have done better in fighter pilot fashion — always trying to make each other better.”

Closures

Road construction will take place Monday through May 29 on Lawn Avenue on Ramstein near Bldg. 2128 with half lane closures. Roadwork includes replacement of underground heat lines between Bldgs. 2128 and 2158, which requires excavation on the edge of Lawn Avenue. Road restriction is one lane for the duration of the heat line replacement. Facility access will be maintained throughout the project through the use of steel plates over the heat line trench. Slight traffic delays in the immediate area may be expected; motorists should plan accordingly. Drivers should exercise extreme caution due to proximity of construction traffic, and for everyone’s safety, obey the traffic laws and regulations.

The “deployers” were then assigned to a squadron, given an out-processing checklist and a mobility folder. “This was an opportunity for students to experience what their Airmen and Soldier parents go through in order to deploy,” said Noreen Mantini, Ramstein Intermediate School education counselor and event coordinator. “I had 100 percent attendance today — the children were so excited to attend today's activities.” Many students have deployed parents, so the day's events brought them to mind. “My mom is deployed to Africa. I wish she was here and I miss her, but I know the kids over (there) need her,” said Abriya Williams, RIS student.

The students' first stop was legal. A general law paralegal explained wills and powers of attorney. Then each student completed and signed a special power of attorney. “My special power of attorney is for the care of my cat, Selena,” said Nicole Manning, RIS student. “My best friend will take good care of her while I am away.” Next, the “deployers” were made aware of potential diseases and insects thriving in their “deployed” location during the medical readiness briefing. The public health technicians issued small candies “medication,” as well as dosage instructions. “Mosquitoes carry the disease malaria, so it is good we get medicine to help us not get sick,” said Ryan Jennings, RIS student. The young “deployers” were issued mobility gear and trained on the use of camouflage, concealment and face paint. They also participated in a hands-on meals ready-toeat demonstration. “This cheese tortellini MRE tastes so good,” said Alexandra Bertolucci, RIS student. “You guys are so lucky — I could eat this every day.” “One of my favorites was the station with the food that you could just pour water in and just eat it completely (the MRE). It was really cool,” Williams said. Finally, during the Security Forces demonstrations, the students had the opportunity to take down a posed assailant during less-than-lethal, force baton training. Security Forces also had their tactical gear and a patrol vehicle on display. “We are so thankful for all the community members who came together and gave up their time to coordinate these events for the kids,” Mantini said. The mission was a success — more than 50 children processed the deployment line. Trained, equipped and ready to go, these young “deployers” learned what it takes to be forward, ready, now.

21st TSC hones skills during first of three staff exercises Story and photo by Staff Sgt. Warren W. Wright Jr. 21st TSC Public Affairs Staff sections of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command participated in a weeklong staff exercise designed to assess and improve staff proficiencies on select training tasks March 23 to 27 on Panzer Kaserne. The staff exercise, or STAFFEX, was the first of three exercises that will prepare the command to participate in Exercise Trident Juncture later this year. While the 21st TSC staff performs staff functions on a daily basis, it was important for the staff to utilize the STAFFEX to train collectively and assess how to improve their functions, said William Grossman, the deputy chief of the 21st TSC’s training section and one of the key planners of the exercise. As a result of the first exercise, the staff made improvements on how they conduct operations daily. “This being the initial staff exercise, we had some very technical communications goals that we had set,” said Col. Matthew Redding, the 21st TSC’s chief of staff. “We set some product outputs and some process output goals, and we’ve met those for what is primarily going to be our battle staff members.” Initial planning for the exercise began more than two months prior to the STAFFEX, when key planners first briefed the chief of staff and began coordinating multiple internal progress reviews. Additionally, the team received support from a mission command systems integration team from Fort Bragg, North Carolina, which assisted in the improvement of mission command systems within the organization. briefing products we produced as a result of this STAFFEX,” Grossman said. “We’ve tweaked and improved our unit battle rhythm and identified some processes that may allow us to reduce some meetings and give more time back to staff sections.” During the STAFFEX, the 21st TSC staff utilized current operations taking place throughout Europe, such as Dragoon Ride, to formulate the backdrop for the scenario-based staff estimates and updates. “The neat thing is that the work we’ve accomplished for this STAFFEX is going to carry on to the following week since we still have ongoing operations,” Redding said. “At the end of the day, all of the hard work that the staff has done is

going to be played out every single day because we are using live systems to track units and sustainment across the theater.” While this was just the crawl phase of the threephase exercise, the 21st TSC plans to use what they have learned to better prepare themselves for upcoming exercises and real world missions. “We plan to build on the things we’ve learned from this STAFFEX to improve our daily operations and to help set the conditions for the two future STAFFEXs we plan on conducting later this year,” Grossman said. “The staff has done a fantastic job,” Redding said. “We’re really looking forward to the next exercise.”

But I will never forget what he told me next. “I have to tell you that I really admire what you’re doing,” he said. “It takes a lot of guts, so let’s go out and (seek justice for what has happened to you).” We pulled up to the police station and an officer escorted us into a room. The door opened, and I saw my assailant. Next to him was an empty chair where the officer signaled me to sit. Shaking, I managed to take my seat at which time my assailant starts yelling. There was no need for translation; my interpreter told me he was accusing me of lying and trying to ruin his marriage. I left the room momentarily to try and compose myself. I took a deep breath and looked in the mirror. I had been so stressed for the past two months, and it reflected in my physical appearance. My skin had broken out from my face all the way down to my chest. But I knew in my heart what happened that day — I wasn’t a liar. I closed my eyes and prayed to God for strength. I made my way back into the room. I looked around at all the people who came out to support me — my commander, first sergeant, station

manager and OSI translator and, for the first time in a long time, I felt safe. I remained as calm as I could and answered the questions asked of me, despite my offender being a few inches away and constantly yelling at my interpreter and I. This was by far the hardest thing I’ve had to face in my life. Weeks went by before we heard anything. The judge decided to take my case to court. I would have to testify again, except for this time, no one was allowed in the courtroom with me. My special victim’s counselor walked me to the door of the courtroom. Then a Korean officer took me in and motioned me to sit in a chair that had been placed in the middle of the room. I looked around — no one sat in the pews and there was no jury, only a judge, an interpreter and a transcriber. They all stared as the prosecutor approached me. I was the victim, yet somehow, the room, the glares, the questions, all made me feel as if I was the offender. A month later, I was told the judge had found my assailant guilty. It was a huge relief, not only for me, but for others as well. I learned I wasn’t alone — many others on-base came forth and said they, too, had experienced

harassment from this man. The Air Force put his shop off-limits, helping to ensure others wouldn’t fall victim to the same crimes. Throughout the fourmonth ordeal, my Air Force and Army family stood by my side. My special victims' counselor helped me through every step of the legal process, despite being stationed in Japan. To this day, he continues to check up on me from time to time. OSI volunteered an agent familiar with Korean law to translate and advise my counselor and me on the next step. Everyone in my chain of command, my fellow Airmen and Soldiers all the way up to the Pentagon, showed sincere and personal support. Today, with the love and support of my family and friends, my wound is slowly healing. I hope that, in sharing my story, people may find comfort in knowing that no matter where you’re serving, despite being away from everything you know, you are not alone.

For one F-16 pilot with little more than two years flying time, the opportunity to train with Romanian wingmen is an experience that has a permanent place in his memory. “It was an unforgettable training experience,” said 1st Lt. Andrew Taylor, 480th FS electronic combat officer. “Being able to fly with the Romanian pilots and to be able to train against different aircraft other than the F-16

The F-16 has some pretty incredible capabilities and we were able to do well.” While the mission was designed to provide lessons learned, build interoperability, and make each other better to keep the skies over Romania and Europe safe, both nations also gained a better understanding of their own capabilities through the friendly competition.

Sexual assault awareness and prevention month: victims' counsel provides legal assistance, support by Staff Sgt. Leslie Keopka 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

If a sexual assault happens, it is crucial for individuals to know who they can turn to, where they can go and what help is available to them. April is Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month. The month focuses on ensuring Airmen and families are aware of the resources available to aid in the prevention of sexual assault and the different types of reporting procedures available. The Air Force Special Victims’ Counsel is one of the many resources that members can use for legal advice and independent legal representation. “We function just like attorneys in the civilian world,” said Capt. Jessica Jacquay, Air Force SVC attorney. “We have a lawyer-client relationship; it is completely confidential. We only answer to (the victim), essentially.”

The Air Force initiated this program in 2013 to help combat sexual assault and give victims a voice in the military justice system. The purpose of the program is to provide advocacy and advice, and to empower victims by removing barriers to their participation in the process. The SVC attorneys report directly to the Air Force Legal Operations Agency, keeping them out of the local chains of command and base legal office. “A lot of the fear victims face is the uncertainty of what is going to happen next,” said Tech. Sgt. Anna Nakamoto, SVC paralegal. “We are here if they have questions. They can talk to us, and we have the capability to keep reports restricted. After they speak with us and see what their options are, then they can make the best decision going forward.” To better assist sexual assault victims, attorneys selected for this position go through extensive train-

ing, including attending the Special Victims’ Investigation course at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center. In this course, they learn how sexual assaults are investigated, helping them to better understand the process. Paralegals assigned to the SVC learn about trauma and neurobiological reaction to trauma. They also learn how to communicate with victims when doing initial intakes, what type of questions to ask and how to interact with them. “The SVC is helping to give victims the power back,” Nakamoto said. “We want people to know we are here to help. A choice has been taken away from them and we help to give them their choice back.” All active-duty military members, regardless of who the perpetrator is, are eligible to use the SVC. Adult and minor dependents are also eligible for SVC services when the assault has a military connection.

“I spoke with a young woman who didn’t know if she wanted to report her assault or who to turn to,” Jacquay said. “She said, ‘I just want to tell someone my whole story and know it's confidential and get advice on what to do.’ We can provide that advice, even if they aren't necessarily eligible for our services in the long run. We can do that for anyone that walks in; we can listen and give advice confidentially. I was able to do that for her and she decided to go forward with the reporting.” The assigned attorney is with the victim throughout the interviews, hearings and courts-martial to provide them with the legal advice and support they need. Child’s dream turned pilot’s reality by Senior Airman Jonathan Stefanko 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs First was the silence, then anxiety took hold. There was nothing the 12-year-old boy could do, except hold his father's hand and wait for the ... boom! The jet flew past, and the

audience exploded with excitement, screaming for the next performance. However, the child did not move. He only reached out toward the vanishing jet as if he could grasp a faded dream — and fly. Now a C-130J Super Hercules pilot for the 37th Airlift Squadron, Capt. Kenneth Jubb relives his childhood fantasy every time

he takes to the air. “I will never forget when that F-16 (Fighting Falcon) flew past me all those years ago,” Jubb said. “It was an amazing experience and, while I may not be a fighter pilot, I still have the chance to do what I love.” After serving more than seven years in the Air Force, going on three deployments and countless missions around the world, Jubb has achieved his dream of aviation. However, he says his success wouldn't have been possible if he never joined the military. “Most of the people I knew while I lived in Atlanta have served in the military at some point in their lives, even my father,” Jubb said. “He was the one who originally introduced me to aviation and sparked my interest.” Stephen Jubb, an Air Force veteran and Kenneth Jubb's father, continued his love for airframes as an air traffic controller where he would share tales of past adventures with

his son and guide him toward a common passion. “There were always stories and advice to hear, and I was always around planes,” the pilot said. “As a child, I would go to the control tower with my father and watch them take off — I loved it.” Though the military was all he knew, it wasn't until Sept. 11, 2001, that Jubb decided it was time to start following in his father's footsteps.

“I wouldn't say I was unsure of what I wanted to do, but watching those towers fall solidified my future,” he said. “After high school, I left for Louisiana State University and enrolled in ROTC.” After years of hard work and dedication, Jubb graduated from the university and joined the Air Force ranks in 2007 as a newly See Pilot, Page 14

commissioned officer. “His mother and I are so amazed in all he has achieved,” Jubb's father said. “We knew he always wanted to be a pilot, and to see him turn those dreams into a reality is tremendous. Words really can't describe how proud we are of him.” Jubb's childhood fantasy was finally becoming a reality. However, when he began to fly, his dreams evolved into something much more. “When I finished pilot training, I thought it would be great if I could hear my father on the radio as I flew by his tower,” Jubb said. “Unfortunately, he had just finished controlling air traffic around the same time I became a pilot, and I didn't think it would be possible anymore. So I let that idea go.” Although he went through life determined to make his wishes come true, Jubb thought this would be one he could never change until he received a call while flying above Southwest Asia. “You are cleared to land,” Jubb said, recalling his father's response. “It threw me off when I heard his voice in my headset,” Jubb continued excitedly. “I used to hear him talk to multiple aircraft when I was a child, but this time he was talking to me. After all these years, he was able to land me, a moment we have always wanted, and in the Middle East of all places. It's a moment I will always cherish.” Stephen Jubb traveled to Southwest Asia to teach the locals how to properly control air traffic, which presented his son the opportunity to turn another dream into a reality. “I was contracted to work at an airport near where my son was, but I was restricted to where I could go,” Jubb's father said. “I didn't think I would be able to be with him. In the end we made it happen, and for the first time, I was able to see my son land his C-130.” After years of dreaming, he is no longer standing motionless. The pilot reached out and took hold of his own future and achieved what he knew he was always meant to do — soar.

Blossom fest presents latest wines

by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Freinsheim will celebrate its annual blossom fest under the motto, “Cooking, Arts, Wine,” Saturday and Sunday. The wine growing community will present the new season’s wines, and visitors have the opportunity to talk to vintners. The I-Punkt Freinsheim (Tourist Information office) and participating wineries will sell wine passes for €12. This pass will authorize visitors to taste 20 wines in small tasting glasses on both days. Sunday, stores will open 1 to 6 p.m. and the toy museum will exhibit a collection of old toys. Wine Princess Anne II and a local band will officially open the fest at 11:30 a.m. on both days at the historical town hall. Wagon rides with Haflinger horses are scheduled to start at noon from the Kreuzhof winery. Surrounded by an ocean of blossoms, visitors will find a large variety of culinary specialties, wines and art items throughout the medieval town. Food specialties include potato pancakes with salmon or apple sauce, pork chops with potato salad, pancakes with spinach and sheep

cheese, prime boiled beef with horseradish sauce, trout, shrimps and oysters, chicken breast in orange-mustard sauce with curry rice, flammkuchen with asparagus, salmon rolls with salad, Thai food, strawberry parfait with berries and homemade cakes. Art galleries will display art objects including paintings and sculptors by local artists. The Baroque garden invites visitors to take a walk along

the medieval town wall. The town wall was built in the 15th century. After the town came under the domination of the electoral palatinate in 1471, the new authorities enforced the current walls. With the iron gate, construction of the fortification came to an end in 1514. Until the beginning of the 19th century, only two gates were leading out of town. Besides the two town gates, the iron gate in the

east and the Hain gate in the southwest, about 20 towers were put up within the wall — today five towers are left. It is known as one of the nicest and most complete town fortification facilities in the Pfalz. Kaiserslautern High School culinary team prepping for nationals, raising trip funds

licing through last month’s competition in Europe has earned the Kaiserslautern High School culinary team a spot at the national competition April 18 to 20 in Anaheim, California. “It feels good knowing their hard work has paid off,” said Andrew Dager, the school’s culinary arts teacher, known simply as “chef” around campus. “The kids worked three months, so to see them win is a great feeling.” At the Department of Defense Dependents Schools-

Europe culinary competition, held Feb. 24 to 26 at the KHS classroom kitchen, the team’s mouth-watering dishes enticed the judges and earned them a ticket to nationals. The national competition is an annual event hosted by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation. This year, it will be held at the famed amusement park, Disneyland. It’s a chance for the champions from 48 different states, including DODDS-E winners, to compete on the national stage for scholarships. “You’ll see a number of higher-level cooking techniques being used at the national competition, so they

WASHINGTON (AFNS) — To highlight the yearround contributions, courage and patriotism of the military community’s youngest members, the Defense Department observes April as the Month of the Military Child, said a Pentagon official. Established by then Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger in 1986, the month recognizes about 1.9 million U.S. military children ranging from infants to 18 years old, who have one or both parents serving in the armed forces, said Barbara Thompson, the director of DOD’s Office of Family Readiness Policy. “We want to highlight their sacrifices (and) support of the military member in their families, so it behooves us to take time from the busy calendar of our events and recognize military children,” she said. Permanent change of stations, deployments and training activities, among other facets of military life, can present unique challenges to children who must constantly adjust to distance, unfamiliarity and uncertain schedules, Thompson said. “That can be a real sacrifice, because each parent is a very important part of that child’s makeup,” she said. “So we want to make sure that when they move or change schools, all of those transition times are supported with resources, programs and services.” DOD offers a variety of programs to help military children overcome these challenges, Thompson said.

Available programs offer assistance For example, the Child Development Program offers childcare up to age 12. Similarly, youth development programs offer older children opportunities for recreation, and character, social and emotional development. Thompson reported that parents, too, have resources to help guide and nurture their children of all ages. The New Parents Support Program helps parents during pregnancy and childbirth, and children up to three years old, to reach their full potential through home visitations and parent support groups, she said. Military OneSource is another resource available 24/7, 365 days a year, to support parents to learn more about parenting skills, as well as to find support for themselves, Thompson said. It also offers telephonic, face-toface, online and video nonmedical and financial counseling, which she described as “strengthening pillars” for military households separated from extended family or settling into a new environment. “On the installations, we have military family support centers,” she said, “where a multitude of services for transitions and life skills are offered to make sure our families can be resilient and strengthen them in their efforts to be the parents they want to be.” Family support has evolved over the last 40 years to become the family readiness system, which is a collabora-

tive network of agencies, programs, services and professionals who promote the readiness and quality of life of military families both on installations and in the community, Thompson said. “There is no ‘wrong’ door,” she said. “So regardless of where you’re seeking support, whether it’s with your pediatrician or with your chaplain, he or she will also know the resources to support you in your efforts to navigate the military life course.” A visual tribute Across the services, Thompson said, parades, fairs, art and poetry contests will abound as installations develop engaging and amusing activities to solidify the bonds among families and communities. “We want to make sure that children’s voices are heard during the Month of the Military Child,” she said. “It’s a fun time to be with their families (and) to take part in the various activities that the services developed to recognize military children.” Community outreach initiatives include partnerships with the Department of Agriculture and the National Institute of Food and Agriculture’s 4-H youth group to promote “Purple Up!” on April 15, Thompson said. Students, school sports team members, teachers and community leaders will wear purple as a visual tribute to military children. “It is hard to be a military child, and they’re doing it super well,” Thompson said.

During their weeklong visit to Ramstein, the aircrew refueled more than 20 A-10s, honing their ability to keep aircraft flying. “Our main goal here is fueling the A-10s for their deployment in support of Operation Atlantic Resolve,” said Capt. Bobby Stanford, 100th Air Refueling Wing pilot. “It's been really successful. Everyday we've been able to refuel aircraft so they can complete their mission.” Inside the KC-135, co-pilots took part in the natural progression of their career field. “Two of our pilots were also able to perform aircraft commander upgrade training,” Stanford said. “It is required onthe-job training for a co-pilot to become an aircraft commander. As a co-pilot, your primary duty is to learn the aircraft and become proficient in flying. As an aircraft commander, you are required to take it a step further by becoming responsible for making decisions concerning the execution of the mission and ensuring the safety of everyone on board.” Pilots weren't the only ones training thousands of feet above

William Johnson, 86th AES aeromedical evacuation technician. “Ramstein doesn't have any assigned, but it's still vital that our flight nurses and aeromedical evacuation technicians are familiar with the aircraft and have the opportu-

I was able to read my Air Force instructions then see it in front of me. The A-10s deployed as part of a theater security package in support of Operation Atlantic re possible with the strategic access provided by infrastructure, support and relationships with local communities at U.S. and host nation installations. Service members from Ramstein, Spangdahlem Air Base, England, were all involved in the aerial refueling training. Aircrew from Mildenhall stayed multiple days at Ramstein to operate from the Air Force’s premier power projection platform, giving the A-10s deployed aerial refueling capabilities.

569th USFPS provides anti-bullying training by Staff Sgt. Joel Reyes Rodriguez 569th U.S. Forces Police Squadron Most people have probably heard the old adage, “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” Maybe they have spoken these words themselves in an effort to dissuade a bully’s attack, but in reality, we know that words can hurt and can cause damage. The 569th U.S. Forces Police Squadron recently teamed up with local school psychologists to create an anti-bullying program for Kaiserslautern Military Community Schools. The program provides students with clear guidance on expecta-

tions of peer mediation and what to do in the event students ﬁnd themselves victimized. Today, bullying doesn’t end on the playground or in the hallways; it is a problem that has evolved with time and technology. Social media networks have made cyberbullying a full-time problem. The most recent anti-bullying seminar was conducted on March 9 to 13 by the 569th USFPS in support of the Department of Defense Dependents Schools-Europe’s “Resiliency Week” at Kaiserslautern High School. The program was presented to 105 students and teachers from KHS with overwhelming positive feedback from the students and staff.

The seminar entailed: • Key actions to take when faced with a bully and the expected outcome (i.e. recognize, respond, listen and promote safety) • Why the anti-bullying program is important • Types of bullying (physical, emotional, covert and cyber) • Why you should speak up, whether you’re a bystander or victim • Why do bullies bully? (personal history, having power, society and family issues) The nature of online life and an increased number of children with access to media devices, makes sending humiliating or degrading messages, pictures or videos simple, immedi-

ate and anonymous. Bullies can mask their identities with screen names and make direct physical and social threats extending beyond school grounds. While there are many different types of bullying, the goal of the 569th USFPS is to provide students with the necessary information to make the right decision, intervene, speak up, come forward and seek help. Through education, children can be instilled with the courage to end bullying. Parents, friends, teachers and coaches are always available to help mediate or listen. A Wine Lover Things to See

By Cheryl Koller I have seen many lovely little German towns where the vineyards are right in the middle of it all or at the very least, in full view of the town’s center. I often refer to this as my vision of Heaven. There really is something about the green vineyards that enhances the beauty of a village and such is the case in Rüdesheim am Rhein. The vineyards give the town a striking rustic charm, which blends lovely with the historical buildings, restaurants and shopping beside the beautiful Rhine River.

Ferry Connection We arrived in Rüdesheim from Ramstein and decided to take the ferry route. The ferry connection between Bingen and Rüdesheim has been a vital lifeline on the river for hundreds of years since there are no bridges crossing the Rhine for a distance of more than 90 km between the cities of Koblenz and Wiesbaden. Crossing on the car or passenger ferry takes only a few minutes. For some, taking the ferry is their daily routine to and from work. For us, it just gave a sense of adventure and made us feel like we were on vacation!

Wine Tours One of the delights of Rüdesheim is a walking winetasting tour. Shockingly, we did not take this tour when we were there (although we do have plans to go back). A guide familiar with the history of the region (often called “German Tuscany”) can escort you to some of the top wine estates as well as take you hiking from vineyard to vineyard. On the other hand, you can just wing it and go out on your own.

The best place for panoramic views of Rüdesheim and the surrounding area is from the Niederwald Monument. There is a lookout in front of the monument with a viewing telescope. We could see for miles and had excellent views of the village and the River Rhine. It really is a “must do” and a relatively easy walk or you can take the cable cars as we did. The station is located in town on the Oberstrasse and has a cable car sitting out front, so you can’t miss it.

Castles For the castle lovers, there are two castles in Rüdesheim. The Boosenburg Castle sits among the vineyards and is the highest structure in the town. Unfortunately, it is privately owned and is not open to the public. Another castle, the ancient Broemserburg Castle, is more than 1,000 years old and is the oldest castle in the Rhine Gorge. It is owned by the town and has over 2,000 winemaking exhibits on display. Since we only had time to visit one museum, we chose the Broemserburg Castle.

easy to see why this little shopping street is so very popular. It is full of charm that is exclusive to Germany with great cafes, bars, music, and lots of laughter. Rüdesheim as a town is touristy due to its location on the Rhine River. Souvenir shops (with some bargains from competitive shops) mix with more serious wine, craft and clothing stores. There are lots of restaurants showcasing mostly German cuisine. Our favorites are the ones somewhat hidden from the streets, in courtyards and gardens. If you are looking for a free city guide, you can find one from the Tourism Office on Rheinstrasse. Idyllic Rüdesheim am Rhein is the gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley. Wine growing has a long tradition in Rüdesheim and has established the town’s reputation as a producer of acclaimed Riesling and Pinot Noir wines.

How to Get There By car, Rüdesheim is approximately 30 minutes southwest of Wiesbaden, 1 hour and 30 minutes north of Kaiserslautern and 2 hours and 30 minutes north of Stuttgart. Go on DB Bahn for train information.

There are a couple of other museums in town that we did not have time to visit on this trip, such as the Foltermuseum (an intriguing medieval torture museum) and Siegfried’s Mechanical Musical Museum.

Town center Possibly Rüdesheim’s greatest claim to fame is a wonderful little (and I mean little) street called Drosselgasse. The afternoons are extremely lively and the nights add to the fun atmosphere. It is
