86 SFS builds host nation partnerships Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Edgar Grimaldo 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs U.S. Air Force Airmen from the 86th Security Forces Squadron partnered with their German Bundeswehr counterparts from NATO Headquarters Allied Air Command to conduct a series of exercises at Ramstein Air Base and Kapaun Air Station, March 15-16.

Frequent training exercises are critical to ensure NATO forces remain fully prepared, and allow for allied force development and strengthened alliance. This series of exercises not only focused on readiness, it also aimed to strengthen rapport amongst Defenders within the Kaiserslautern Military Community.

Throughout these exercises, German air force airmen trained on multiple weapon systems, utilizing state of the art virtual reality gear and simulators, and became certified on vehicles.

Biden thanks US troops in Poland for their sacrifices, service

“That’s why you are here.”

During his visit, Biden referred to the words of former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, who famously called the United States the “indispensable nation.”

Albright died earlier this week. “It sounds like a bit of hyperbole,” Biden told the soldiers. “But the truth of the matter is, you are the organizing principle around which the rest of the … free world is moving. You’re in the midst of a fight between democracies and an oligarchy.”

He said that Chinese President Xi Jinping believes that democracies can’t succeed in the 21st century. “The reason is [that] things are moving so fast, changes [are] happening so quickly,” he said. “Democracies require consensus, and we can’t put together consensus as quickly as autocrats can.”

This operating idea from autocrats bodes ill for democracies.

Russian President Vladimir Putin invading Ukraine is one symptom of that. Putin thought the democracies would split if confronted by such an invasion, Biden said yesterday at NATO Headquarters.

President Joe Biden thanked U.S. troops deployed to Poland for their efforts in response to the Russian invasion of neighboring Ukraine.

The president met with soldiers assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division at Rzeszow, Poland, near the border with Ukraine. He ordered soldiers from the division to the country in early February in response to Russia’s massive military buildup on its borders with Ukraine and in Belarus.

Russia invaded Ukraine Feb. 24.

U.S. troops are in Poland to deter Russia from invading a NATO country and, if that fails, to defend every inch of NATO territory. “Every day that I talk to my boss, he asks about how you’re doing and whether or not you have what you need to be successful,” Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III told the paratroopers when he introduced the president.

“And he is concerned about you and focused on you each and every day. I want you to hear that from me, because it’s the God’s honest truth. It’s who he is.”

The president had lunch with

the soldiers and then moved into an area where he could speak to more of them. “First of all, thank you,” he said. “You represent 1 percent of the American people.

Biden also thanked the soldiers for what they represent to the rest of the world. He told them the United States is a nation organized by an idea and cited the Declaration of Independence. “We

The additional troops pushed the number of U.S. service members in Europe to more than 100,000 for the first time in decades. But it’s necessary “because we are the organizing principle for the rest of the world,” Biden said. “We’ve sent the best available in America, and that’s all of you women and men.”

“The Street Smart Virtual Reality simulation plays out different situations security forces may encounter,” said Tech Sgt. Zachary Willard, 86 SFS armory noncommissioned officer in charge. “This includes anything from de-escalating situations to defining threats and using the necessary level of force.”

Additionally, German airmen utilized the Meggit 300-degree room. The facility is a room with screens in the shape of a circle meant to simulate a real world scenario. This is used by Airmen to help improve aim without having to travel to the firing range.

“Using the simulator means we can spend more time critically analyzing how members are performing with the weapon,” Willard said. “With the 300-degree target range, we are able to monitor every detail from the sway of the weapon, to movements that are made when the trigger is squeezed.

Having high-resolution marksmanship data means we can correct mistakes in-office, and when they go to shoot on the range our Defender’s time is more effectively spent.”

While half the German airmen were in the simulators improving their weapons familiarity, the other half were getting qualified on military RZR tactical vehicles.

This not only became a way for the Bundeswehr members to become more familiar with U.S. equip-

ment, but also a way for them to bond with USAF Airmen and increase interoperability.

The second day of training exercises took place on Kapaun Air Station, where participants put their new knowledge to the test and shot an M4A1 carbine and M18 pistol with the goal of achieving expert marksmanship.

“This event builds camaraderie between U.S. and host nation forces,” Willard said. “In the event that we are in a position to work together as NATO allies, we will be better prepared for the mission at hand.”

To close out the exercise and partnership events, the German airmen enjoyed a final meal where they were awarded certificates of weapons competency.

“You have a highly motivated team, and I see a lot of professionalism,” said German air force Master Sgt. Benjamin Angel, NATO HQ AIRCOM training noncommissioned officer in charge. “I’m happy to have had two amazing days filled with lots of smiles and learning.”

The exercise ended with Lt. Col. Cassandra Bates, 86 SFS commander, presenting Angel with a letter of appreciation, thanking him and his personnel for their dedication to building partnerships.

86 SFS is taking proactive steps to put the 86 AW’s mission, Build Airmen, Project Power, and Support Partners, into action. The exercise signaled a renewed commitment to building positive partnerships amongst defenders in the KMC.

LRMC information As you may have heard, due to rising numbers of COVID-19 infections, Germany has revised the Infection Protection Act, which is applicable to U.S. Forces in Germany in accordance with Article 54 of the NATO-SOFA Supplementary Agreement. In the revision, workplace access is restricted to vaccinated, recovered or tested employees. In light of the revised act, we want to remind our communities that testing capabilities at military treatment facilities

are reserved for official purposes and individuals who present medical symptoms. Unit Leaders who have questions regarding the revised act should reference Force Health Protection Guidance (Supplement 23) which established COVID-19 screening testing for unvaccinated individuals.

INTRODUCING: Heritage Baptist Church, Mehlingen: Welcome Home!

ocated in the Kaiserslautern military community, in the village of Mehlingen, just minutes away from anywhere in the KMC from Ramstein to Sembach, the Heritage Baptist Church greets you with a big: “Welcome home”.

The multi-cultural church just celebrated its 52nd anniversary.

Heritage Baptist was originally started as Sembach Bible Baptist on 1 March 1970 in the Sembach Base Chapel Annex. It has operated at its current location since the mid 1970s. The church is staffed by Pastor John Hallman as a bi-vocational missionary.

The church, being mainly made up of U.S. service members and DoD civilians, has had its ups and downs over the years, especially with COVID. Heritage has seen up to 300 in attendance in past years.

Like most, the COVID restrictions hit them hard, but this came as no surprise to the Lord. By His grace, Heritage has seen a steady increase in attendance in the last months.

Heritage has one goal: To make Christ known. They do this through building relationships, through the heart-warming music and the clear, Bible teaching and preaching in their services.

The preacher emphasizes that salvation is full and free only through Jesus Christ and His shed blood. Also, that Christ is the master architect in putting lives, families, and homes back together. Bible preaching strengthens, encourages, and causes people to draw closer to the Lord. The folks at the Heritage Baptist Church try to live by the Word of God, which is what makes them warm and friendly. When Christ was asked what is the greatest commandment, He responded, in Matthew 22;37-40: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.

Everything done at Heritage is done in an effort to both love the Lord and love our neighbors, as well as inspire your heart.

In an effort to likewise help women, Heritage has WOW — Women of the Word group, facilitated by Mrs. Hallman.

Air Advisors from the 435th Contingency Response Support Squadron facilitated the visit from the Estonian and Lithuanian air forces with the 86th MXS personnel.

The joint exercise marked the first time NATO allies participated in the training usually conducted three times a year for 86 MXS Airmen.

“The most important part of the course is safety,” said Estonian air force Senior Sgt. Tauri Mikki, firefighter. “We are here to learn how to use the equipment safely and execute strategies to hoist and move aircraft in any situation.”

Participants used air consoles, tow ropes, slings, tethering lines, airbags, and an air compressor to lift the aircraft off the ground.

“The most challenging part of the exercise has been training with equipment we are not familiar

with,” said Mikki. “It’s been interesting to learn new things.”

The training concluded with the three participating countries lifting a G-222 aircraft off the flight line.

Throughout the exercise, training leads looked for proper and safe usage of all equipment.

Participants were expected to overcome obstacles like equipment issues by using each other and working as a team.

“The main thing we’re looking for is that they minimize additional damage and maximize the safety of themselves and the equipment and the plane they rescue,” said Tech. Sgt. Brandon Hughes, 86th MXS repair and reclamation non-

commissioned officer in charge.

Exercising CDDAR capabilities prepares Airmen to recover aircraft without secondary damage. Whether an aircraft runs off the runway or crashes, units can respond with proper equipment to either gather necessary parts or pull the aircraft back to the runway for maintainers to fix.

“It doesn’t matter if the aircraft is large or heavy,” said Tino Weichel, 86 MXS crash recovery team chief, “the principles are the same for the most part, so it’s necessary that we train together to establish a basic level of knowledge among our allies.”

AJ is the son of two military parents, U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Tanyah Stone, United States Air Forces in Europe - Air Forces Africa program manager, and U.S. Army Col. Andrew Stone, director for Joint Strategic Plans, Policy, and International Affairs for the Ohio National Guard.

“The best part of having parents in the military is the character building that you get from it,” AJ said. “I had a big growth in independence. I’ve had to do things that I wasn’t used to doing, and I’ve had to take up responsibility for myself.”

Before winning the award, AJ volunteered as the Red Cross ambassador for his high school in Ohio.

He helped set up and administer the blood drives, enlisting help from different students on the student council.

While still in Ohio, AJ had enrolled in an online college government course through a high school program. After receiving notice that he would be moving with his mother to Germany, AJ didn’t know if he would be able to continue the course, as the school wouldn’t be able to offer the dual enrollment program to someone out of state.

After working it out with the college, however, AJ was allowed to finish the semester. To help others in the future, he worked with his state representative to push for legislation that would allow military children needing to move out of the country or out of the state to finish their courses.

“In different situations I try to balance what is going to help the most, and how I can make

situations easier for people,” AJ said.

“That’s why I won the award. My passion is to help people.”

AJ, one of eight recipients aged 13-18 this year, was awarded the 2022 Military Child of the Year® for the National Guard branch of the armed forces.

“What I hope AJ understands about this profession is a sense of duty, and I think he truly does because he sees me and also his mother,” Andrew Stone said. “The best part of being in the military is the opportunity, and I think AJ has seen that and aspires to a lifetime of services.”

April is the Month of the Military Child. The annual commemoration was established across the Department of Defense in 1986, and it serves as a time for the members to honor the important role that military children play in the armed forces community.

Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Lauren Jacoby 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Some people may not have heard of the Air Force Assistance Fund, but it is an organization that accepts donations to assist Airmen and their families from service entry to retirement and beyond.

The annual AFAF campaign officially kicks off at Ramstein Air Base, on March 28 and lasts until May 6. Ramstein’s goal is to reach $144,786.

The AFAF aims to help Airmen, Guardians, and their families when they need it the most.

“I don’t want to see people struggle,” said Senior Master Sgt. Jason Parvin, 86th Maintenance Squadron superintendent. “Helping out people who have already done their time and giving back, reaffirming that they are still Airmen, still Guardians, still family; that is huge for me.”

The AFAF consists of four charities: The Air Force Aid Society, Air Force Enlisted Village, the LeMay Foundation and Air Force Villages Charitable Foundation.

The Air Force Aid Society provides emergency financial assistance,

educational support and community programs for Air Force and Space Force families. AFAS utilizes 100 percent of every contribution received to help Airmen, Guardians and their families.

The Air Force Enlisted Village has been committed to providing homes to thousands of Air Force widows.

AFEV also provides bus transportation to go to and from medical appointments, the commissary and the base exchange.

The LeMay Foundation awards grants to support widows and widowers of Airmen and Guardian retirees.

Monthly grants assist with medical and prescription needs, meal services and other unexpected expenses.

The Air Force Villages Charitable Foundation provides critical care and housing to widowed spouses of retired Air Force and Space Force officers. Over 92 percent of those who receive assistance live in assisted living, skilled nursing or memory care facilities.

These charities are not included in the Combined Federal Campaign lineup. AFAF is a one-of-a-kind campaign for Airmen and Guardians, by Airmen and Guardians.

“Taking care of each other is part

of our culture and is in our DNA,” said Brig. Gen. Josh Olson, 86th Airlift Wing commander. “There is no better way to take care of each other than donating to the Air Force Assistance Fund. Every dollar ensures our people have access to support in times of need.”

Anyone is able to contribute, regardless of their military affiliation. Those making donations can choose one of the four foundations, or they can allow AFAF to distribute the donations based on each foundation’s needs.

Unit project officers and key workers will be visiting with their units to answer any questions, as well as to collect donations.

A kick-off event will be held on April 4 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center parking lot on the corner of Maxwell Avenue and Kisling Memorial Drive. Everyone is invited to enjoy some free food, learn more about AFAF and have an opportunity to donate.

If your child is born in Germany, then there are a number of steps to keep in mind to ensure proper documentation and for the application of a passport.

Symposium participants met with Anselm Beach, Senior Advisor to the Secretary of the Army for Diversity and Inclusion and Col. Caprissa BrownSlade, Chief Diversity Officer, Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army Equity and Inclusion Agency, as well as U.S. Army Europe-Africa MEO and Equal Employment Opportunity leaders.

Beach and Brown-Slade provided insight into Department of Defense and U.S. Army policy updates and regulations. They encouraged participants to be agents of change by taking information back to their commands and clarifying Army objectives and initiatives like Project Inclusion.

“When we’re talking about equity, what we are talking about is how we ensure we move beyond equality to provide people with the tools, the systems, the framework that they need to get the job done,” said Beach. “Not because somebody needs something extra, but because we are providing them what they need to deliver an outcome for the Army.”

Beach used M16 equipment given to left handed firers as an example of building equity.

“M16s were designed for right handed firers,” said Beach. “So, left handed firers would be given a little device to clip in the hand grip to prevent shell casings from hitting them in the face,” he said. “Equity is when we fill in the gap to make sure that everyone has what they need to perform in the maximum effective way for the Army.”

Beach stressed that diversity, equity and inclusion is not affirmative action.

The outing was part of the Military Equal Opportunity symposium March 15-18, sponsored by 21st Theater Sustainment Command Equal Opportunity.

The symposium was the first formal EO training opportunity in nearly three years for 7th Mission Support Command’s Master Sgt. Keather Mitchell. The sessions helped her better understand the diversity and inclusion framework.

“We are bringing in diverse sol-

diers, but are we utilizing their talents?” asked Mitchell. “Are we hearing their thoughts? Are we including what they believe will improve the unit and lead to a positive environment? If we are not doing those things, we are not getting the maximum return on diversity.”

USAREUR-AF Equal Opportunity Program Manager Lt. Col. Garry Dodard, said equal opportunity advisors are key in helping commanders understand that point.

“If our Service Members are feeling that they are part of the team…..if they are feeling that they are part of an inclusive organization, then you’re going to see productivity go up,” said Dodard. He added much of the work EOAs do is not always reflected in reports.

“Sometimes the formal data does not reflect the conflict resolution work that happens behind the scenes,” he said. “Commanders can feel confident

Sgt. 1st Class Krista McDowell, 18th Military Police Brigade says that confidence goes both ways. She appreciates command support for training, so she can better educate her unit.

“I am very passionate about this job,” said McDowell. “I went to an all-white school, and when I entered the military it was the first time I was ever around diverse people. The equal opportunity program has really made me see things differently. I am a better leader today then I was 10 years ago.”

207th Military Intelligence Brigade EOA Sgt. 1st Class Annie Tafolla appreciated the opportunity the symposium provided to network with more experienced EOAs like McDowell.

“Sometimes you only see things a certain way from your foxhole,” she said. “New people can learn from seasoned professionals. It’s amazing to see all of this talent merge together and create this amazing environment. It’s really important to learn best practices from other individuals. I hope to take back what I’ve learned to my commander and start implementing those best practices.”

21st TSC EO Program Manager Lt. Col. Hardy Johnson said connecting the EOAs stationed in Europe was an important symposium objective, as the past three years of COVID regulations limited training events and face to face interactions. Additional objectives were to empower EOAs and heighten awareness of their role.

“The value that equal opportunity advisors bring to any command is to be the eyes and ears of the command, and know what is truly going on,” said Johnson. According to Johnson, the training provided will help participants ensure regulatory compliance, conduct education and outreach activities and develop action plans to fulfill commanders’ intent.

Senior NCOs came here to get eyes on competition venues and iron out any potential logistical, safety or scheduling issues.

Ensuring the safety and excellence of those events takes a team — and historical knowledge — to succeed, according to one of the Soldiers organizing the event.

“I’m grateful for all the NCOs and outstanding senior leaders I have met across the other six garrisons who have been willing to help and give feedback from previous IMCOM-E Best Warrior Competitions to really make this event a success,” said Sgt. 1st Class Diana Isom, the NCO in charge of the competition. “I am grateful for the Soldiers and leaders from Headquarters and Headquarters Company and throughout the garrison who are involved in the planning and execution.”

During a time where the garrison is at the height of readiness supporting world events, LaRocque said Baumholder is the best place to hold the competition.

“Baumholder is ready,” he said.

Isom agreed that Baumholder is the right place for IMCOM-E’s Best Warrior Competition.

“It is such an honor and privilege for Baumholder to host this event” she said. “Baumholder is rich in history especially when it comes to the German-American relationship it shares with the German military and civilian community.”

Over the next few weeks, 635th Movement Control Team, from the 39th Transportation Battalion, will be supporting DE22, 3-4 ID and Resolute Castle at the port of Alexandroupolis, Greece. The soldiers from 635 MCT will be working side by side with the 839th Transportation Battalion (SDDC) and our Greek allies to bring the 1-66 ‘Iron Krights’ into Europe for Atlantic Resolve. DOD grows university affiliated research center partnerships with HBCUs

by Department of Defense News Maintaining technological superiority for the nation is a top goal for the Defense Department, and ensuring that happens means DOD must seek out diverse input from a variety of sources, including researchers at historically Black colleges and universities, as well as minority-serving institutions, also known as HBCU/MIs, David A. Honey, the deputy undersecretary of defense for research and engineering said.

“As the federal department with the largest research and development investment, the DOD must continue to make strides in removing the barriers of equal opportunity in contracting and research partnerships,” Honey said. “This begins with developing an inclusive culture to help build trusted relationships between our universityoperated contract laboratories and the HBCU/MI community.”

The undersecretary spoke today during the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Town Hall Series, which is funded by the Office of the Secretary of Defense through the HBCU/MI program.

The department has 14 university-affiliated research centers, or UARCs, which Honey said serve as a critical element of its innovation base. They also provide some of the independent and objective scientific and technical expertise that the department relies on to develop and maintain the nation’s technological superiority.

“These research centers act as trusted advisors to the DOD by uti-

lizing their core competencies to address the department’s priorities,” Honey said.

Already, Honey said, the department is working to build more partnerships between its UARCs and HBCU/MIs. One example of that is a pilot program at the University of Maryland, College Park’s Applied Research Laboratory for Intelligence and Security.

That UARC now has a partnership with three HBCU’s, including Howard University and the University of the District of

To keep building and maintaining technological superiority, DOD will continue to work with universities, including HBCU/MIs, to ensure the best talent is tapped to meet the needs of the nation, Honey said.

“We are striving to level the playing field for all research institutions, so that the best possible expertise is made available to the department,” Honey said. “The DOD strives to harness the technological and scientific knowledge of a community that represents the wide-ranging backgrounds of the American people.”

DOLOMITES from Page 1 For example, we asked a lifelong local to recommend a remote hike that was still reasonable enough for a family of five to conquer. He raised one eyebrow, said, “I know a place,” and sat down to scribble out directions.

An hour later, we were deep in the gorgeous peak-and-meadow terrain of the Trentino Alto-Adige Dolomites. Things were looking promising when we took a sharp right from a well-traveled highway after seeing a sign for our trailhead. It was only a few kilometers away. Easy, right?

Not exactly. The road to our trailhead could only be described as insane. After beginning with a narrow strip of concrete that looked as if it had been stapled on to the edge of an Ewok hut complex next to a rushing mountain stream, we entered a series of hallucination-inducing lightless tunnels. These were followed by multiple single-lane hairpin turns and blind curves squeezed between 10-foot-tall rock walls.

Then, somehow, the road got worse.

The pavement crumbled and guardrails disappeared. Cliffs plunged three hundred feet straight down. Suddenly, on a road that was only slightly better than a semipaved jeep trail, we came face-to face with a concrete truck. Judging from the lack of road concrete, the driver appeared simply to have been there for a joy ride.

When we finally parked, I took my shaking hands from the wheel and muttered to my wife, “I’d hate to see the road that isn’t safe for families to travel.”

Nevertheless, we were thrilled to be in the Dolomites, which contain some of the best hiking in the world. The views are astounding, especially in the Cortina d’Ampezzo region. There, the earth looks like nothing else, anywhere. Spires point like massive bony fingers toward unassailable blue sky. Immense rock fields stretch below chalky rust-streaked vertical cliffs. Green meadows shimmer on distant hillsides across sea-wide valleys.

And even though this may not be a land of famous art museums or idyllic Tuscan villas, the Dolomites are still in Italy, which means you’re never far from creature comforts. Energizing cuisine — including pizza and gelato — can be found in villages, along mountain roads, and in some of the larger cities like Feltre and Cortina. The southern end of the Dolomites are close to the world-famous Prosecco wine-growing region, where vines cover every inch of earth, including hilltops, in a way that is beautiful and unique.

Best of all, the Dolomites are vast enough that it is possible to find yourself alone, even in the summer. When this occurs, it is hard to describe how satisfying it feels to be a living creature on a mountain, just one small piece of a brilliant universe. It makes the journey, and all that it entails, worthwhile.

throughout the Dolomites, which encompass a series of national parks and gorgeous mountainous terrain. You should definitely invest in a guide book, but here are two areas that provide can’t-miss beauty.

opportunities are everywhere along the twisty narrow road, as are classic Dolomite spires and peaks.

2. Bellunesi National Park, near the southern end of the Dolomites, offers rugged mountains, secret hikes, and plenty of streams, springs, and greenery.

Elementary School. Lacey Trevino’s art students used their learning about sewing and textiles to develop stuffed animals representative of the original characters the elementary students created to star in their own fable. Congratulations to the Kaiserslautern High School Education Students, Dr. Kendra Wagers, Lindsay Pierce, and Jennifer Holley, for a hugely successful event.
