BWC awards 2017 Soldier/NCO of Year By Sgt. Eric Johnson AFN Stuttgart Special to The Citizen

STUTTGART — To be warrior, it takes strength and courage — being the best warrior requires a whole lot more. U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart’s 2017 Best Warrior Competition version challenged the junior enlisted and noncommissioned officer competitors on their mental and physical readiness, Feb. 13-15. The BWC kicked off on day one in the wee hours of the morning, beginning with the Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) under a cold, gray sky, followed by a full equipment layout inspection. An oral

board and essay came next. The last challenge of the day was an obstacle course, never an easy task, even for a seasoned Soldier. The sun didn’t break through the clouds until the last competitor was finishing the course. “When you come to permanent party and you do those warrior skills, they’re going to force you, make you do those tasks uncomfortably,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Mariano Z. Alvarez, senior enlisted adviser, USAG Stuttgart. “It will test your stamina and test your pride.” With a chill in the air and sun beaming up over the horizon, it was time for day two, beginning with the range. rifles at the indoor shooting range on Panzer Kaserne. Once done at the range, they were immediately pressed into the next tasks, a situational training exercise (STX) with a series of Soldier skills. The four STX stations forced the competitors outside of their comfort zones and out of their primary military occupational skills. Fortunately for the competitors, Mother Nature was kinder this year; last year’s BWC was 180 degrees opposite, with freezing rain, sleet and just downright miserable conditions. This time it was cool and sunny. The second day finished with day and night land navigation. See BWC, p.7

Sponsors are vital to unit readiness. Proper sponsorship allows the new member of your team to integrate faster and be focused on your mission. Sponsorship Rodeos provide leaders and sponsors with the community tools and tips to be excellent sponsors. An excellent sponsor plays a key role in making a positive first impression and helping the new person and family integrate into the unit, workplace and

A sponsor is the one who answers these questions and makes the entire family feel comfortable about moving to a new location. The garrison conducted a joint sponsorship “rodeo” in the entrance hall of the Main Post Exchange on Panzer Kaserne, Wednesday, from noon to 4 p.m. where participants visited various community agencies, unit activities, and received leader training on how those agencies support

incoming personnel. Participants at the rodeo were invited to visit each station and engage with the subject matter experts. Stations included pre-arrival resources, housing, transportation, medical, passport office, spouse sponsorship and many more. This event also gave training credit for personnel who attended all stations. With a successful sponsorship program, your new employee will quickly increase your organizations readiness and they will soon be saying: “I’m glad I live here.”

Stuttgart Piranhas devour competition at divisional championships competition at the Europeans in the Netherlands. “I have nothing but the greatest respect for the swimmers who manage to drag themselves out of their warm beds before dawn and drop themselves into the water and train,” said Patricia Huebschman, Piranhas’ president and a Piranhas’ mom. “They put in the time and energy and it is wonderful to see their hard work pay off for them. We are also fortunate to have some of the best coaches in the league.”

Stuttgart — The Stuttgart Piranhas swim team successfully defended its title as the rheinland Division Champions during the divisional competition held in Frankfurt on Feb 4. The all-day affair required the swimming talents of the entire team to beat out three of their division rivals and keep the trophy in Stuttgart. “Our swimmers are very dedicated and the results at divisional show how much effort each one has put into the sport. It is not easy to train at 5:30 a.m. every day for countless weeks,” said andrea Symak, Piranhas’ head coach. “I used a different approach to practices this season and I am very pleased with the results.” The Piranhas now set their sights on the European Forces Swim League (EFSL) individual championships scheduled to take place in Eindhoven, Netherlands on Feb 25 and 26. “Winning divisional really brought us together as a team. We focused more on the group goals instead of our individual times,” said Kurt Huebschman, a junior at the Stuttgart High School.

Catch the Streetcar at the Kelley Barracks Theatre Center By Larry Reilly Photos by Kevin Abel U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart Public Affairs

STUTTGART – The thespians at the Stuttgart Theatre Center are showcasing another gem of a performance with “A Streetcar Named Desire,” which opened Feb 17 and will run through March 5. This 1947 Pulitzer Prize winning play by Thomas “Tennessee” Williams centers on Blanche Dubois, played by Tracy Coffey, an aristocratic Southern Belle from Aurol, Miss., who visits her sister Stella Kowalski, played by Emily Sherwood, and her brawny and somewhat uncultured husband Stanley Kowalski, played by Nathan Dehnke, who live in the French Quarter of New Orleans. Blanche is shocked to discover that Stella lives in a tiny two-room apartment with little or no accommodations for her, but her shock is mild compared to that of Stanley’s when he finds out that Stella’s sister has made an unannounced visit and has brought with her more baggage than the suitcases she carried in. Stanley instantly takes a disliking to Blanche, especially after she admits to Stella that she lost the family property “Belle Reve” to creditors and has nothing but a pile of papers to show for it. Stanley believes Blanche is pulling a fast one on Stella and does some looking into Blanche’s past, which upsets Stella who is sympathetic toward her sister’s plight. Tension between the three heightens when Stella’s pregnancy is revealed.

Stanley becomes very antagonistic toward Blanche when he realizes she is the one guzzling down all his whiskey and that she has started dating Harold Mitchell, one of Stanley’s poker buddies, played by Edward Gaietto. The talented supporting cast does a great job of keeping the flow of the core cast’s performance moving along and the audience in the moment; however, it is Blanche’s performance that is the highlight of the show. It’s evident that Blanche is a talented manipulator and has an insane way with words. Tracy Coffey’s execution of the script in this role is flawless as she skillfully draws the audience into Blanche’s world of deceit and past traumatic events not only with her words, but with her facial and

body expressions. Blanche creates an “awe” moment for the audience as she verbally confesses to Howard how her past experiences have created an internal insanity that often bleeds into her present reality, which for the audience explains some interesting moments in the play. Blanche’s continuing verbal scuffle with Stanley and her growing romance with Howard starts to take an emotional toll on her ability to decipher past from present and real from fantasy; and separate incidents with Harold and Stanley bring her to the brink of … If you are looking for a refreshing form of entertainment, this live performance is a must see. The play addresses domestic issues that continue

to face our society to this day, yet performed from society’s view point 70 years ago. The level of confidence in the cast and in the production was enough for the Stuttgart Theatre Entertainment Branch to submit it in the 2017 IMCOM Directorate Europe Toppers Award. Whether the play takes top billing remains to be seen; however, I predict there will be individual performance awards garnered by the outstanding cast of this play. Helping to stop the spread of germs at work Installation Safety Office U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart

STUTTGART — Illnesses like the flu and colds are caused by viruses that are spread from person to person by way of coughing, sneezing or simply talking. Droplets from an infected person get into the air and are inhaled by people nearby. Anyone within three feet can easily be infected. Flu and cold viruses can also spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches their eyes, nose or mouth. These viruses can live for hours on surfaces like doorknobs, desks and tables. Learning healthy habits can help prevent you from getting infected or spreading flu and cold viruses at home, school or work. Take these precautions even if you don’t feel sick – you could be infected and able

to spread germs 24 hours before your symptoms begin. How to stop the spread of germs Maintain your health to keep your immune system in good shape. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food. The healthier you are, the better your immune system will be at defending your body against a virus. Cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze or cough Cough or sneeze into a tissue and then dispose of tissues where others will not contact them. If you don’t have a tissue, cover your cough or sneeze with your shirt sleeve at the elbow bend of your arm. Be sure to clean your hands every time after you cough or sneeze.

Clean your hands often When available, wash your hands with soap and warm water, then rub your hands vigorously together and scrub all surfaces. Wash for 15-20 seconds. It is the soap combined with the scrubbing action that helps dislodge and remove germs. When soap and water aren’t available, alcohol-based disposable hand wipes or gel sanitizers may be used. You can find them in most supermarkets and drugstores. If using a gel, rub the gel in your hands until they are dry. The gel doesn’t need water to work; the alcohol in the gel kills germs that cause colds and the flu.

How often do people lose security clearances over mental health? By Navy Capt. (Dr.) Carrie Kennedy Director, Deployment Health Clinical Center

SILVER SPRING, Md. — Psychologists and psychiatrists working in military treatment facilities are often asked to do security clearance evaluations, sometimes referred to as DoDCAFs (Department of Defense Central Adjudication Facility). These evaluations can best be conceptualized as forensic or operational in nature, in that the intent of the evaluation is ultimately a question of national security and there is no traditional doctor/patient relationship assumed by either party. While the mental health professional conducting the evaluation has no deciding role in whether or not individuals gain or maintain a clearance, they are often asked by the individual being evaluated, “Am I going to be able to get a clearance?” or “Am I going to lose my clearance?” The evaluating psychologist or psychiatrist can never answer this question one way or the other. The mental health evaluation comprises only one small piece of the information needed to contribute to the larger scope of these investigations. However, the vast majority of service members can be put at ease by the simple fact that it is a rare occurrence for someone to be denied a clearance or have their clearance revoked due to mental health reasons. How rare is it? The Deployment Health Clinical Center’s Psychological Health Promotion Team, under the leadership of Dr. Mark Bates, conducted an analysis, courtesy of the Personnel Security/Assurance Division of the Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC) and the Defense Personnel and

Security Research Center (PERSEREC). It identified the following: Between 2006 and 2012, only one in every 35,000 people either applying for the first time or seeking to maintain their clearance were either denied a clearance or had their clearance revoked after answering “yes” to the dreaded Question 21 on Standard Form 86 (the question that pertains to mental health history). Further, during that same 6-year time period, of the 85,000 people who were either denied a clearance or had their clearance revoked, only 145 – 0.17 percent – of denials and revocations were due to mental health reasons. That is significantly less than 1 percent. These evaluations understandably make people nervous, and the stakes involved (e.g., potential loss of career) may make it less likely that people attempting to gain or maintain a clearance will seek mental health care if they need it in order to avoid this level of scrutiny. While an evaluating mental health professional can never say whether or not someone will have problems with their clearance, they can provide the real-world statistics above to both military commanders and service members. This may optimize the chances that service members with security clearances will seek mental health treatment when they need it and that their commanders will be more comfortable encouraging help-seeking behaviors. For mental health professionals conducting security clearance evaluations, the adjudicative process is described on the State Department website. Information about answering Question 21 can be found on the Real Warriors Campaign website and the Center for Development of Security Excellence website.

In place of actually traveling through time in their own fasterthan-the-speed-of-light time machine, the students constructed time capsules, Feb. 6-10, to be opened on their 30th birthday. Each time traveler wrote letters to themselves and collected letters from their parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters and best friends who also wrote to their future selves. Additional treasures were cataloged and added to the time capsules. The students’ parents were instructed to store the time capsules for the next twenty years. Bon voyage through time!

RSO, chaplains serve all faiths of Stuttgart community

Photo by Larina Marina / Shutterstock.com

By Brian R. Merry Religious Support Office U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart

STUTTGART — The ability to practice one’s faith requires diverse and wellrounded programs. The U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart Religious Support Office (RSO) is dedicated to providing community ID cardholders with the free exercise of religion granted by the First Amendment. Within the Stuttgart footprint, there are chaplains who represent diverse faiths including

Catholic, Protestant and Islam. When uniformed chaplains do not represent specific religious affiliations, the RSO uses designated religious group leaders. Currently, there are two such leaders in the Stuttgart footprint, one for the Jewish community and another for the Mormon community. Faith experience is designated by many facets. Worship is the most common faith experience. Within the Stuttgart footprint, many religious worship services are

available weekly; Catholic, Protestant and Jewish worship experiences are consistently available to the community. Religious education is another facet of faith experience. The Stuttgart community benefits from a bountiful religious education program for both adults and children, including programs about sacramental preparation for the Catholic community, Hebrew school for the Jewish community, Protestant Women of the Chapel, and Catholic

Women of the Chapel. The Mormon community also offers a religious education program for their youth. The RSO periodically offers other faith experience opportunities such as retreats and pilgrimages. In addition to the protection of free exercise of religion and meaningful faith

Vintage car season is back By Laura Cambiago Spangler USAG Stuttgart Public Affairs

If you are a motorhead, chances are that you’ve heard of the upcoming Retro Classics at the Stuttgart Trade Fair (Landesmesse) and that you’re planning a visit. The 2017 edition of Europe’s largest vintage motor show is gearing up to enthuse the public on the weekend of March 2-5 with yet another staggering display of classic cars and motorcycles, newer collectibles, sports vehicles, trucks, accessories, and all kinds of automobilia. Exhibits are grouped by genre and country. Hall 6 is devoted to commercial vehicles, Hall 5 traditionally hosts American classics and U.S. automotive paraphernalia, while expo plaza,

Hall 1 gallery, part of Hall 8 and the inner open space Rothaus plaza will showcase the offer of private sellers. This year’s novelty are a made-in-Italy exhibit in Hall C2 and a matching sales area for Italian vehicles on the East Gate side of the trade fair. The offer is varied, in all price ranges, and huge, with more than 700 vehicles up for sale. Buyers who wish to roar off proudly in their brand-new purchase can do so after a pit stop at the vehicle registration stand of the Böblingen County Administration in Hall 6. Special exhibitions will be staged throughout the expo. Two-wheeler fans shall not miss Dr. Mechanik’s live show in Hall 5, a once-in-alifetime chance to witness the birth of a motorcycle, from the initial design to the final product, or the

“Historic Bikes with British Accent” exhibit presented by the Allgemeiner Motorradsport Club Leonberg. After last year’s successful premiere, Retro Classics 2017 will feature an auction day in Hall 4 on March 3 starting at 3 p.m. Collectors and would-be are welcome to bid for rare classic treasures like a Mercedes-Benz 190 SL or a rare Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Speciale, as well as for more affordable and recent models of the 1970s and 1980s. Organizers Auction & Markt call them “youngtimers” and stress their popularity among an increasing number of buyers looking for the dream car of their teen years - but also among non-buyers. “In addition to the pure thrills and the triumph in the event of a successful bid, an auction

ultimately provides an opportunity to meet a large number of likeminded people from the car scene and talk shop,” spokesman Günter Kaufmann said. Retro Classics caters to an international public and is considered a must for motor fans. In 2016, it reached a total of 90,000 visitors and 800 journalists, but organizers expect to set new record figures this year. Doors open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 2; then daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. through March 5. Single tickets are priced €18, family tickets €40. Free admission for kids 6 years and younger. Further information at www. retro-classics.de/en, online tickets at http://www.messe-stuttgart.de/en/ visitors/service/admission-tickets.

Sellers earn scratch at Patch during community flea market By Martha Povich FMWR U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart

STUTTGART — Shoppers found bargains and sellers decluttered at the annual Community Flea Market inside the Patch Community Club, Feb. 11. A total of 32 participating community members gathered their personal treasures, packed them into their POV's and carried it all into the club ballroom. Once everything was set up in the best way possible, and with great hopes of selling everything and making a bit of pocket change, the doors opened and community members went shopping. Participants were encouraged to post on social media, tell their friends and work colleagues, as in the past at the flea markets held on Kelley and Robinson Barracks. The early bird shoppers had the best choices at the uncrowded start, and all of the sellers made sales, some better than others depending on their offerings. These flea markets are, and

Little Chocolate Cakes (low carb version)

• • • • • • • • • • • • • •

4 -5 tablespoons of vegetable oil 7/8 cup ground almonds 4 tablespoons cocoa powder 2 teaspoons baking powder 2 tablespoons of baking stevia or another source of sweetener A dash of salt 2 whole vanilla pods 2 medium eggs 1/2 cup coconut milk 2 tablespoons crème fresh 1 pomegranate 2 cups papaya, diced into ¼ inch cubes Powdered sugar for garnish 2 tablespoons lemon/lime juice

Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius or 160 Celsius on convection oven. Cover all sides of

4 x 4-four inch ceramic baking dishes with oil. Mix ground almonds with cocoa powder, baking powder, salt and sugar substitute. Cut vanilla pods in half. Scoop out center of each pod. Whisk eggs a bit so that they are a little creamy. To the eggs, add creme fresh, coconut milk, four tablespoons of vegetable oil, and center of vanilla pods. Mix well. Add dry ingredients to egg mixture. Divide between the four ceramic baking forms. In the middle level of the oven, bake for 15 minutes for convection oven. For normal oven, bake 18 minutes. Remove from oven and let rest until they are cooled. Garnish with powdered sugar. Remove the seeds of the pomegranate. Put in bowl and add papaya. Add a bit of stevia and lemon/lime juice. Top each cake with fruit mixture. You have a nice low carb dessert!
