GERMAN WILDLIFE: GET TO KNOW YOUR NEIGHBORS
by Azure Hall contributing writerGetting to know the local wildlife is a part of living in the area. Germany offers a diverse ecosystem with a wide range of species. Foxes, birds of prey, deer and, of course, wild boar live in and around the Kaiserslautern area. There are a number of places that can help you get acquainted with your furry neighbor friends.

HISTORIC GERMAN GETAWAYS
TRIER
Trier was founded in the 4th century BC, making it Germany’s oldest city. It was once the capital of the Western Roman Empire, and a few original Roman structures are still standing, including the largest Roman baths complex north of the Alps, and the Porta Nigra, “Black
by Rachel Plachtacontributing writer
Germany is a nation rife with history, and each city and village has its own story to tell. From ancient Roman cities to cities that played major roles in religion, technology, and war, this list of five historic German adventures will be sure to tickle the fancy of any history buff no matter which era they prefer.
Gate,” the only one of four entrances to the old Roman city still standing. This grand city is also home to Trier Cathedral, the oldest cathedral in Germany, as well as Liebfrauenkirche, “Church of Our Lady,” the oldest Gothic church in the country. Most of the major historic sites are within walking distance of one another, but still make sure to wear comfortable shoes, as most of the walking areas are cobblestone. The added benefit is that Trier is only an hour and a half drive from Kaiserslautern, making it an easy trip to make in one day.
MAINZ
Another old Roman city, Mainz is most well-known for Johannes Gutenberg, the man who invented the printing press. The Gutenberg Museum, home to one of the famous Gutenberg Bibles, is directly across the street from St. Martin’s Cathedral, a thousand-year-old Catholic cathedral boasting impressive spires and beautiful stained glass windows overlooking the Rhine Valley. In Old Town Mainz you’ll find cafes, wine bars, and restaurants located inside restored 17th century buildings. A larger city than Trier, but only an hour from Kaiserslautern, it makes for an excellent day trip, or a great weekend getaway that isn’t too far from home.
HEIDELBERG
Heidelberg’s most famous structure is Heidelberg Castle. The castle has seen its fair share of hardships — it has been destroyed by invading troops, by fire, and has even been hit by lightning not once, but twice! The outside still shows disrepair, but the inside is fully restored. You can visit for just €9, and that price includes a trip down into the wine cellars to see the 58,000-gallon oak wine cask, the largest in the world. Take a walk through Aldstadt, “Old Town,” eat and drink at one of the cafes, then visit the Church of the Holy Ghost, first mentioned in history in 1239. Heidelberg is only an hour from the KMC area, so head out early, explore this old city filled with rich history, and be home in time for dinner!
WITTENBERG
Few places are more closely associated with the name of Martin Luther and the Reformation than the Lutherstadt Wittenberg. Over 500 years ago Martin Luther nailed 95 Theses to the door of the castle church, and thus beginning the Protestant Reformation that spread across Europe like a wildfire. The famous Reformation-era painters Lucas Cranach the Elder and Younger both lived in Wittenberg, and many of their paintings are found in St. Mary’s Church, where Martin Luther typically preached his sermons. Wittenberg is about a six-hour drive from K-Town, so make a weekend trip of it and take your time wandering the 16th century streets, various museums, and art shops in the city that changed the history of religion in Europe.
POTSDAM
The newest city on the list, Potsdam turned from a little-known army garrison village to a major German city when Prussian ruler Frederick William I chose it as his hunting residence in 1660. In the middle of Potsdam sits Sanssouci Palace, a sprawling Rococo estate that was the summer home of Frederick the Great. Potsdam played a key role in the end of World War II: The Cecilienhof Palace was the location of the Potsdam Conference,
where Allied forces gathered to decide the fate of war-torn Germany and Europe in general. You can visit both these palaces plus many more historic locations around Potsdam for €14 if you buy your tickets at https://tickets.spsg.de. Potsdam is quite the drive; seven hours from Kaiserslautern, but with so much to see, plan to spend a few days exploring the city and its surrounding areas.
From Nov. 1 this year, Cecilienhof Palace will be closed until further notice due to renovation work as part of the master plan for the Prussian palaces and gardens.
SPRING IS HERE
LET’S GET MOVING
by Katie F. Boltuch contributing writerTell me if this sounds familiar: “My bathing suit is telling me, ‘Get off the couch and get yourself in that gym.’ But my sweatpants are like, ‘Come on in, there’s plenty of room!’”
The winter months can be some of the most difficult to find motivation. We naturally want to hibernate, stay warm, drink Gluhwein, enjoy the crackling of the fire, and use every excuse in the book to stay on the couch. Be honest, which one of these sounded like you this winter: “It’s too cold,” “It’s dark and rainy,” “But these sweatpants are so comfy!” “But I have so much catching up to do on Netflix,” or “It’s so warm under these blankets?”
Waking up every morning to darkness can be a bit depressing and definitely ruin any chance to make good on those New Year’s resolutions. Don’t worry, you are not alone. A 2014 study by the University of Scranton suggests only 8 percent of people actually achieve their New Year’s goals.
Luckily, daylight saving time starts Sunday, which means the sun will set later and temperatures are on the rise. Spring is a season for new beginnings, and that’s not just for blooming flowers. You can have a new beginning too! If you’re still struggling and those sweatpants still feel “oh so good,” the following tips can get you back on track and keep you motivated.
BE REALISTIC
Let’s be serious, no one is expecting you to get up on Monday morning and run 10 miles or lift heavy weights. You shouldn’t expect that either. One of the biggest reasons people trade in sweating at the gym to sweating in front of the fireplace is because they go too hard too soon. If you haven’t been doing anything at all, make it a priority to simply get yourself moving. Once you’re off the couch, you can move on to the next tip.
SET SPECIFIC GOALS
We’ve all heard the statement “failure to plan is planning to fail.” But have you ever heard “begin with the end in mind”? Now is the time to decide what kind of results you want. Do you want to lose weight, or are you simply interested in getting more active? Do you want to get out of the house a few times a week, or do you want to try a new activity such as yoga or spinning? Knowing what you want to get out of your efforts for a lifestyle change can make a world of difference. It’s not enough to just say “I want to lose weight.” Setting specific, realistic goals will motivate you and create a path to success. For example, “I want to exercise 3 days a week for 30 minutes” is a specific and realistic goal.
KNOWLEDGE IS POWER
There’s a reason for the small print on TV and in magazines telling you to consult your doctor before making any major changes to your diet or exercise routine. Knowledge is power, and that definitely applies to changing your lifestyle. Moving more and eating less junk food is a great start, but how do you know you’re actually on the right path? If you’re planning to start walking, do your research. You may need to replace those sneakers that have been sitting in your closet. How often should you exercise if you want to lose weight? What should you eat to feel better and have energy? If you’re planning to cut out certain foods from your diet, such as red meat, or want to try a new diet, vegetarian, vegan, etc., learn what you need to be aware of and what kind of effects it will have on your body.
SCHEDULE, TIME MANAGE AND PLAN
A 2015 Harvard Business study revealed that people who make goals are 10 times more successful than those without goals. The study recommended that setting smaller milestones with organization can make everything less overwhelming. Whether you want to use a calendar as a guide or a notebook to keep track of your progress, use these tools to stay on track.
As long as you’re making goals, let’s talk about your plan to reach these goals. Many people feel like they need a personal trainer to get results. While personal trainers prove effective, they can be costly and are not always the kind of motivation we’re looking for. If you’d rather not go that route or that’s not what your goals entail, there are plenty of other ways to plan for success. If your goal is to get outside more, schedule time to walk the dog or go for a walk with your spouse or children. If you want to try a new class at the gym, figure out where it fits into your schedule.
What if you look at your schedule and feel like you don’t have a moment to spare? Get creative! Use the last 15 minutes of your lunch break to take a quick walk, park the car far away from the door at the office or take the stairs instead of the escalator.
BRING YOUR FRIENDS
Recruit some of your friends to get active with you. A 2013 study from ExerciseFriends. com showed that finding a partner to hold you accountable for your activity raises success rates to over 95 percent. Do yourself a favor, grab a friend and get started. Even if neither of you are ready to go running or lift weights, you can go for a walk, ride a bike or learn a new sport.
HAVE FUN!
Changes in lifestyle and habit can be daunting, especially if you dread anything or everything that has to do with exercise or the gym. If you’re buying new shoes, get ones you love. Make a killer playlist to listen to while you’re doing whatever activity you choose. Buy a fun printed T-shirt — my favorite: “Shh, don’t tell anybody but I’m training to be Batman” — to make you smile. When you’re having fun, you’re more likely to stick to your goals.
MAKE GOOD CHOICES
Food is your friend. That’s right, I said it. As much as we might love to scarf down pizza every night, set a goal to try something new. Start small. Pick one night a week when you’re not only going to eat a healthy meal but also make something new so you actually see what ingredients go into your food. Too often people assume that if they want to change their lifestyle they must restrict their favorite foods. This is absolutely not true. Much like making a plan, educating yourself about food is just as important.
My husband and I say to each other, “Abs are made in the kitchen.” While neither of us have six-pack abs, we repeat this mantra to each other when we know we’re making poor food choices. Although we don’t restrict our diets — everything in moderation is ok and I don’t want to live in a world without nachos — this little saying helps us choose a healthier option for a snack or meal because we know we’ll feel better. When you eat healthier, you feel healthier.
GIVE YOURSELF A CHANCE AND STAY POSITIVE
You may be familiar with the 21-day rule, which is that it takes a minimum of 21 days to form a new habit, but it turns out it could take a bit longer. A 2014 study published by the European Journal of Social Psychology examined the habits of 96 people over a 12-week period. Results show it can take about two months before a new behavior becomes automatic. What this means is that you have to be patient and forgiving. If you do go to the gym, remember why you’re there: For you, your health and your wellbeing. Don’t compare yourself to anyone. Everyone has to start somewhere.
Remember, you are going to have days where you just don’t want to do anything. You are going to have setbacks. If you miss out one day, make sure you get back into it the next. Above all, stay positive! Don’t get discouraged because you can’t do it all, all the time, all at once. Life happens. Be flexible and be proud you are doing something to improve your health!
WEEKEND FUN ON A SHOESTRING
by Katie F. Boltuch contributing writerEurope can be expensive!
While it’s nice to be able to travel and the KMC area is conveniently located within four hours of more than half a dozen countries and hundreds of exciting cities, sometimes it’s nice to have fun on the cheap.
The good thing is, there are already so many options.
Most castle excursions are free. Visiting a city (minus the gas money) is free. And even sightseeing can be free if you travel by foot. That being said, sometimes a person just wants to do more than sightsee and visit castles. Fair enough. After some digging, it turns out there are a few places that are either free or incredibly inexpensive within a few hours of the KMC area.
GEIERLAY HAENGESEILBRUECKE, MOERSDORF
Geierlay Haengeseilbruecke is the longest rope suspension bridge in Germany. Opened in 2015, it’s about an hour and a half from the KMC area but can easily be combined with a visit to nearby BernkastelKues or Cochem. The visitor’s center, Besucherzentrum, offers parking at €10 for the first 4 hours (every additional hour €4). Or you can park at the Sportplatz for €6 for the first 4 hours (every additional hour €2). At the Wanderparkplatz at the L204 you can park for free. Be sure to take advantage of the free use of restrooms inside the visitor’s center before making the 20-25 minute trek to the bridge (about 2 km each way). It’s recommended to bring food unless you want to eat at one of the nearby restaurants.
There are signs leading visitors to the bridge, but it is likely there will be plenty of other people to follow. Once you arrive at the bridge, there are a few benches for rest. Walking across
the bridge is free and it is always open unless there is severe weather. It is not recommended to push a stroller across as the bridge is pretty narrow, but walking a dog (leashed, of course) or bike is welcome.
GPS Address: Lahrer Strasse 10, 56290 Moersdorf, Germany https://geierlay.de/besuch-planen/
BAREFOOT PARK, BAD-SOBERNHEIM
While this one isn’t free, it certainly is a cheap and rewarding adventure. The Barefoot Park in Bad-Sobernheim is about an hour away from the KMC area. May through October, visitors can venture through all types of surfaces. From clay to water to grass to sand, the barefoot path is a one of a kind experience! Not your kind of thing? Don’t worry — there is a beer garden for those who choose to relax with their shoes on.
Entry for adults is €5.50, kids ages 3 to 17 cost €2.50. Group prices and annual passes are also available. Parking is free.
GPS Address: Staudernheimer Strasse 90, 55566 Bad Sobernheim https://www.barfusspfad-badsobernheim.de/
CASTLE PLAYGROUND IN BITBURG
With days feeling longer and the weather getting warmer, it’s only natural to want to spend more time outdoors. About an hour and a half from the KMC area exists a hidden gem of a playground built up to look like a castle and surrounding village. Surrounded by small wooden animals and all the trimmings, there is also an area for smaller kids with a hammock, bridge, and small slide. Bigger kids have the option of rock climbing, a rope bridge, and a long slide. For the even bigger kids, there is a basketball court, ping-pong table, and a zip-line!
With plenty of benches and no major eateries nearby, this might
be a good opportunity to make a day trip out of the experience and pack lunches, snacks, and drinks.
Although the playground is somewhat hidden, online maps will take you directly to the location when searching for “PeterWallenborn-Strasse Spielplatz, 54634 Bitburg.”

EISSPORTHALLE BITBURG
If boredom sets in at the playground, you can find an ice-skating rink less than 10 minutes from the castle Spielplatz. Open every day of the week, with varying hours, the Eissporthalle in Bitburg offers hours of entertainment that won’t break the bank. Kids from the age of 6 to 17 are €4 Tue-Fri and €5 on Sat-Sun/Holidays. Adult tickets are €6.50 per person.
For more details on specials and pricing, visit their website at www. eissporthalle-bitburg.de, GPS Address: Gueterstrasse 7, 54634 Bitburg
JOHN DEERE FORUM, MANNHEIM
Just under an hour away, outdoor enthusiasts of the farming variety can enjoy the John Deere Forum. Visitors can walk through the world of agricultural engineering exhibit. From tractors to harvesters and much more, patrons will get to experience these machines from up close! Learn about engine performance as well as modern technology that helps protect the environment and create sustainable food production. There is even a model farm in the Junior Club Corner showing what a modern farm looks like. Kids are encouraged to participate in the games and play on the tractors!

TOPPELS — TWISTED WORLD
If you’re looking to shake things up, how about shaking it upside down? You might want to think
about visiting Toppels Twisted World in Wertheim Village. Although it’s about a two-hour drive, this one-ofa-kind experience will be worth it. Everything is literally upside down. Open 365 days a year (yes, Sundays too!) from Mon-Fri noon - 5 p.m. and Sat-Sun 10 a.m - 5 p.m. , visitors can experience this house offering unique perspectives in every room. With six exciting rooms to explore where up is down and down is up, the pictures alone are worth the visit! For those that need a break to settle back in to their feet, the coffee shop — ÜberKopf-Café — provides organic and fair trade products for purchase. Although your loss of direction may turn your stomach, the entry fees certainly won’t: Children under the age of three are free, Kids four to fourteen are €5.90, and adults are €6.90. Furry friends are welcome as long as they are leashed. Reservations are not required, so what are you waiting for?

Ingredients:
For the cupcakes:
• 1 package Pillsbury™ Moist Supreme® Chocolate Premium Cake Mix
• ½ cup (1 stick) butter, room temperature
• 1 cup sour cream
• ¼ cup milk
• 3 eggs
• 20 chocolate cream-filled sandwich cookies

NO BAKE BUTTERSCOTCH AND PEANUT BUTTER BIRD’S NEST COOKIES
Staying with the theme of spring desserts, these no bake bird’s nest cookies are a tasty mouthful. They are so easy to make, your children will be able to have fun helping too.
Ingredients:
• ¾ cup butterscotch chips
• ½ cup smooth peanut butter
• 2 cups chow mein noodles, crushed
Preparation:
• ¼ cup chocolate eggs
Melt the butterscotch candy chips and peanut butter over low heat in a wide saucepan. Stir continuously until the combination is melted. Pour the butterscotch and peanut butter mixture into a large bowl. Add the chow mein noodles and stir to combine. Scoop mixture into a muffin tin and allow the ‘nests’ to cool for 10 minutes. Carefully remove “nests” from the tray. Place candy eggs into nests and serve.
• 1 pound bag orange candy melts
• Fresh mint for sprouts (optional garnish)
Preparation:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line two standard muffin pans and set aside. Begin by mixing up the cupcake batter, either by hand or in an electric mixer, adding all ingredients, one at a time, until combined with the cake mix. Pour batter into the cupcake tins. Bake the cupcakes for 18-20 minutes at 350 degrees. While the cupcakes are cooling, prepare your candy covered strawberry “carrots” and the dirt. Crush the chocolate sandwich cookies, removing the cream center and discarding.
2. Melt a bag of orange candy melts with a small amount of coconut oil. Whisk until smooth. Dip strawberries into the mixture and swirl to remove any excess chocolate. Set on a piece of parchment or wax paper to dry and harden.
A lighter alternative to the previous recipes, this fruit pizza is light and tasty. It is perfect for an outdoor party or brunch.
EASTER FRUIT PIZZA
3. While the strawberries are setting, cut a hole in the center of the cupcakes, roughly the size of a quarter, going down about ¾-inch deep. Using a butter knife, frost the area around the hole, then sprinkle the cookie crumb “dirt” on top. Place a strawberry “carrot” in the center of each cupcake, surrounded by “dirt.” Use sprigs of mint for foliage, if desired, and serve.
4. If you don’t have time to make strawberry carrots, you can buy marzipan carrots (pictured) for cake decorating on the economy.
Ingredients:
For the cookie:
• 2 packages Pillsbury Cookie dough
For the frosting:
• 8 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
• ⅓ cup firm strawberry jam, at room temperature
• 1-1½ cups powdered sugar
To Assemble:
• 8 cups assorted fresh fruit, washed and sliced
• ¼ cup apricot jelly or other clear, light-colored jelly
• 1 tablespoon water
Preparation:
Shape cookie dough into ball shape. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate. When the dough is firm, preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
Cover a large baking sheet with parchment paper or wax paper. Roll out the cookie dough between two sheets of paper until it is a large egg shape, about ½-inch thick. Place cookie crust on a baking sheet, and bake it at 350 degrees for 15-19 minutes. Crust should be a light golden color, puffed and set in the middle. Let it cool completely until it is at room temperature. Set aside. The cookie crust can be baked several days in advance.
Beat the cream cheese using an electrical or hand mixer until it is smooth and free of lumps. Add the strawberry jam and 1 cup of powdered sugar, and mix combination fully. Taste and add sugar if needed. Spread the frosting mixture in a thin, even layer over the surface of the cookie. Layer the fresh fruit over the frosting, creating desired pattern. In a small microwave-safe bowl, combine the jelly and water, and microwave for 30 seconds. Stir them together until the jelly is fluid and smooth, like a thin gel. Using a brush, smooth the jelly mixture over the entirety of the fruit. This adds shine and prevents the fruit from wilting. Cut the “pizza” into slices and enjoy!
FOLLOW THE GERMAN TIMBER-FRAME ROAD
by Ruth Cuevas contributing writerFor many a road-tripper, traveling through Germany evokes images of storybook villages surrounded by lush forests, castles perched high on mountaintops, or mysterious Roman or Celtic artifacts in unsuspecting locations. Aside from having some of the best road conditions throughout Europe, Germany has taken a lot of the guess-work out of planning by naming routes that highlight particular interests. Would you like to see castles? Take a drive on the Burgenstrasse (German Castle Road). Want to travel in the footsteps of the Romans? Follow the Romantische Strasse (Romantic Road). Do you like medieval villages or timber-framed houses? If you answered, yes, then read on.
The Deutsche Fachwerkstrasse (German Timber-Frame Road) was created in 1990 by the Historische Fachwerkstadte e.V. or ARGE (Association of Historic Timber-Framed Towns). The ARGE connected historic villages from the northernmost part of Germany to the southernmost tip overlooking the Bodensee. The German Timber-Frame Road is approximately 3,900km long and is divided into eight regional routes and crosses through eight federal states.
The process of timber-framing is one that has clearly stood the test of time. Many of the timber-framed villages in Germany are close to 1000 years old and some, older. Timber-framing involves building a structure with notched beams secured by wooden pegs. The gaps between the beams are called panels (Facher in German). The panels are filled with any of a variety of materials that contain insulating properties such as brick, sticks, hay, or more commonly, wattle and daub. The coating of daub has many recipes, but generally was a mixture of clay and chalk with a binder such as grass or straw and water or urine. The panels were then covered with a type of plaster and sometimes painted, but the timber beams were left exposed, creating a stylistic effect.
In Germany, the timber structure usually sits on a base of concrete or brick so that the exposed timber beams begin well above ground level. These historical halftimbered structures are protected in Germany and should the owner of a historical timber-framed house want to renovate, they must first seek approval from the German government.
Many of the villages on the German Timber-Frame Road remain intact even after hundreds of years which only helps to draw tourists and increase their popularity. Below, is a list of ten of the most beautiful timber-frame villages in Germany, most of them, can be located along the Deutsche Fachwerkstrasse.
STADE
Even though Stade isn’t part of the Deutsche Fachwerkstrasse it is worth a visit. About 45 km west of Hamburg (approximately 650k north of Kaiserslautern), is the village of Stade. Stade sits on the river Elbe, in Lower Saxony. The first mention of Stade was in 934, but traces of human settlers have been found in the area that date back to 30,000 BC. If you’re planning a trip along the Deutsche Fachwerkstrasse, Stade is a good place to begin, especially if your trip is only going to be one-way. https://www.stade-tourismus.de
QUEDLINBURG
Southeast of Stade and slightly off the Deutsche Fachwerkstrasse, is the village of Quedlinburg. Quedlinburg has the largest collection of timber-framed houses — more than 1,300. In 1994, UNESCO designated the village of Quedlinburg a World Heritage site. Even though it is not located on the Deutsche Fachwerkstrasse, the village of Quedlinburg deserves a mention and to be added to the list of the most beautiful German timber-frame villages. Like much of Germany, Quedlinburg suffered extensive damage during the 30 Years’ War. However, the village was quickly able to begin rebuilding. During this period, it developed its own style of half-timbered construction. Diamond cuts at the ends of the horizontal beams and projecting bays mark the construction style of this period. In addition to being one of the three cities in Germany known for holding the most important collections of church treasures, Quedlinburg houses the tomb of the 10th Century German King Henry in the Church of St. Servatius. Quedlinburg is located approximately 500 km north of Kaiserslautern, direction Leipzig. https://www.quedlinburg-info.de/en/
CELLE
Returning to the Timber-Frame Road, to the west of Quedlinburg and south of Stade, is the village of Celle. The town is located on the Aller River, and is known for being the “gateway to Lueneburg Heath,” a nature reserve. Celle Castle dates back to 1530 and belongs to one of the oldest dynasties still in existence. The palace is known to be one of the best examples of Renaissance art in Germany. During WWII, the town suffered some destruction but was spared when German soldiers surrendered. Since then, the town has seen tourism grow and has revived the tradition of having a trumpeter blow his horn from the white tower of the Stadtkirche, city church, twice a day. The tower dates back to 1308. Celle is located approximately 500 km north of Kaiserslautern. http://www.celle.travel
WETZLAR
Further south on the Fachwerkstrasse in the direction of Frankfurt in the state of Hesse, is the village of Wetzlar, situated on the river Lahn. Wetzlar was once the Seat of the Imperial Supreme Court (Reichskammergericht) of the Holy Roman Empire. Roman remains from the reign of Emperor Agustus (27 BC – 14AD) have been unearthed there. The church steeple remained unfinished since the Middle Ages. During WWII the area surrounding Wetzlar and part of the church suffered damage.
A decision was later made to rebuild the church to its original prewar state, unfinished steeple and all; today, the church steeple remains unfinished. The historic city center was luckily spared. The novel, The Sorrows of Young Werther by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was inspired by Goethe’s time in Wetzlar. Wetzlar is located about 180km north of Kaiserslautern, near Giessen. https://www.wetzlar. de/microsite/en/index.php
EINBECK
Along the Timber-Frame Road and located in the district of Northeim in the state of Lower Saxony, is the village of Einbeck. Einbeck remains a nearly intact example of a medieval village. It dates back to 1158, and between the 14th - 15th Centuries, was one of the largest cities in Northern Germany. In 1540, the town was completely devastated by fire to which the blame was swiftly put on a man by the name of Heinrich Diek. Diek was convicted of arson and placed inside a hanging iron cage to die. The village swiftly rebuilt after the fire and where possible, existing structures were reused. The rebuilt city from the mid-16th Century, is what we see today. Archeologists have since unearthed artifacts from the area that date back to the Paleolithic Era. The cage where Heinrich Diek hung can still be seen hanging on display in the town hall. Einbeck is located south of Hanover and approximately 120km west of Quedlinburg. It is about 400km north of Kaiserslautern. https://www.einbeck-tourismus.de/en/
LIMBURG A.D. LAHN
Remaining on the Fachwerkstrasse, west of Wetzlar, Limburg an der Lahn is also in the state of Hesse. Limburg a.d. Lahn is located about 63km north of Frankfurt situated on the river Lahn in a basin surrounded by mountain ranges. The city was of great importance during the middle ages. Its first mention was in the year 910. The town was strategically located on a Roman trade route. The Old Lahn Bridge (Alte Lahnbruecke) was originally built out of wood in 1248 but replaced with stone in 1306. In comparison to the traditional two-toned timber-framed homes of Germany, the colorful structures in Limburg a.d. Lahn stand out. For example, St. George’s Cathedral is accented in red. Many of the wood carvings on the facades have been painted in a variety of colors and some of the timbers have also been painted, providing a unique shift in perspective from the traditional medieval village. The town is known for its virtually unscathed medieval buildings; the original town wall still
stands on the Deutsche Fachwerkstrasse. Among the sights to see in Limburg a.d. Lahn are the St. Anna Kirche which contains 18 stained-glass scenes from the New Testament dating back to the 14th Century and Brueckengasse 9, known for its wood carvings of the seven deadly sins. If you’ve ever wondered what Germany’s oldest half-timbered free-standing house looks like, that’s in Limburg a.d. Lahn as well at Roemer 2-4-6. This picturesque town is located 150km north of Kaiserslautern. http://www.limburg.de

DOG-FRIENDLY HIKING IN THE KMC
by Ronnie Juhans contributing writerIf you are new to the KMC and have your dog(s) with you, depending on where you live you may not have a chance to let your dog run loose, or know great places in the surrounding area to do so. Living in an apartment downtown or onbase/post housing sometimes restricts you to a quick daily walk with your dog before and after work or on weekends. Don’t let this prevent you from getting out and trying something new and exciting while spending quality time with your dog as well as the entire family.
There are hundreds of kilometers of trails to trek with your dog that either start where you live or are just a short drive away. In this article, I want to focus on Nordic Walking trails where you can take the pup with you, and let you too get back in shape for outdoor terrain after spending a lot of time either sitting by the fire or using indoor equipment. The trails also have stops offering food and beverages and water for your dog, just in case you run out along the way.
The Pfaelzer Bergland Nordic Walking trails are posted with signs at the start points with information including routes, distance, difficulty level and points of interest, including rest stops offering snacks. They all have three or four main routes. These trails surround the KMC, Baumholder and Sembach, are just a short distance away, and are dogfriendly.
Nature Fitness Park Waldmohr routes include the Hoehenweg, a 8.2 kmlong, partly-paved trail; Glanaue, a 8 kmlong trail; and the family-fiendly 10.7 km-
long Mohrmuehlweg, half of which is paved. They interconnect and have varied terrain with a medium difficulty rating.
Nature Fitness Park Ohmbachsee routes include the Ohmbachsee Tour, a 4.4 km-long tour with an easy difficulty rating; the 6.6 km-long Ziegelberg Tour, with mostly paved trails; and the Loewenberg Tour, a 9.7 km-long trail, both with medium difficulty ratings.
Nature Fitness Park Baumholder has a 4.6 km-long easy-rated route called Am Bruderbach. This trail can be a bit more of a challenge during early spring due to very slippery terrain. Also around Baumholder are the 8.1 km-long Foersterrunde, 11.9 kmlong Muehlenweg, and 12.4 km-long Zum Wildfrauenloch. All three have medium ratings, however, since most of the trails are not paved, they can be very slippery in early spring.
Nature Fitness Park Burg Lichtenberg also has three routes. Kleine Burgtour is the shortest of the three routes with a mostly paved 5 km distance; Grosse Burgtour is a 9 km tour on mostly paved underground, and the Roemertour takes you just a bit further with a length of 11.4 km. This is one of my favorite parks because they are all near Lichtenberg Castle where you can take a break to take a tour of the museums and the restaurant on the grounds. All routes have a medium rating.
What makes all of these trails great is that they are Rundwege, “round trails,” which have the same start and finish point, and have directional signs on trees or wooden posts so you can turn around and find your way back to the car easily if necessary. The views are amazing and the trails are well maintained.
During spring expect trails that are damp, sometimes muddy and slippery because of tree roots and the remains of leaves and moss from the fall. Depending on the elevation there can still be snow and ice in certain
up with shoes and poles that need a little extra clean up at the end of the day. Cleaning up after your dog is a common courtesy ensuring we all end our day on a good note. Cleaning up after them is especially important if your hike takes you through a public park, playground, or resting areas.
Local community offices have gloves and bags that are free of charge, and in many areas, they are supplied for free in dispensers along the way with signs attached.
The German Department of Public Order and local community administration offices have a danger prevention ordinance outlining your responsibilities while walking your dogs in different areas. This ordinance states that the owners must keep their dogs on a leash while walking them on public streets, and in housing areas.
In all other areas such as hiking trails and through the forest, dogs must be automatically put on a leash or otherwise controlled when other people approach. Violators may be punished with fines up to several thousands of dollars depending on the circumstance. They can also face paying medical bills and property damage costs due to an out of control dog.
areas. Be prepared by checking weather conditions before you leave and letting others know where you are going. Ensure your safety by wearing sturdy water-resistant footwear, dressing in layers, and having a backpack with extra supplies such as water, food, snacks for everyone including the pup, first aid kit, and a phone for emergencies.
While taking your dog along, make sure to keep a few things in mind when it comes to the dos and don’ts of dog etiquette. Everywhere I go there are German hikers with dogs, and dogs are allowed to run off the trail to do their business, mark their territory on a tree, or just romp around and have fun. However, when another hiker (with or without a dog) approaches, the dog is called back to its owner’s side until you pass by. This is done for your and the dog’s safety and also applies to oncoming cyclists.
Ensure you always bring a leash while hiking. If you are not sure how your dog will respond to seeing strangers or your verbal commands, leash your dog in advance to avoid a bad situation. Also, be sure to lead them off the trail to relieve themselves when necessary to prevent fellow hikers from having to navigate around, or accidentally end
It is also important to know that if you plan on taking your dog out for a walk that requires car travel, Germany’s law requires dogs in cars should be safely secured in either a kennel or other restraining devices such as a seatbelt or safety net. This not only protects your dog but prevents unexpected driver distractions that could result in traffic accidents.
The driving distance for the trails in this article from anywhere in the KMC is less than an hour away. For more information, you can contact the Kusel Tourist Information office at 06381-424-270 or email Touristinformation@kv-kus.de. You can also obtain hiking maps from the tourist offices all over the KMC including the Window to Rheinland-Pfalz information kiosk located in the KMCC Mall.

FAMILY, FITNESS AND FUN THIS
by Amie LaSalvia contributing writerSpring is a great time of the year! The flowers begin to blossom, it starts to get warmer, the evenings are longer to enjoy, and so much more. With winter officially behind us now, it is a great opportunity to spend time with your family and have some great fun outdoors, while keeping fit. Though there are too many to list, below I have outlined some of my favorite local springtime family activities.
Hitting the trails
There are so many beautiful trails around the KMC area that you and your family are able to enjoy. What could be better than taking an afternoon stroll or spending a day hiking in the clean spring air, surrounded by the refreshing outdoors. There are over 92 parking areas that lead to trails covering over 2,200 kilometers of breathtaking scenery.
• Devils Tour, Otterbach
This wonderful trail offers 15 kilometers of some heavenly views that won’t disappoint. While exploring this trail, you will find everything from wild romantic creek valleys to steep rises and a breathtaking view over Palatinate mountains that everyone will love.
• Sculpture Trail, Kaiserslautern
In the midst of beautiful nature and wildlife in the Palatinate forest, you can encounter man-made sculptures that are made from sandstone, wood or metal. Some of these weird and magnificent pieces of art blend into the landscape while others present an exciting contrast to nature. There are over 30 works of art that you are able to admire while hiking through the idyllic scenery.
• Mill Trail, Landstuhl
The Mill Trail is one that many families and hikers love. It starts in Landstuhl and passes 13 mills on it’s way south through the adventurous valleys of the Stuhlback river and Walhalbe. This trail stretches out for 23 kilometers and
passes by two great must-see destinations that invite you to stop in for a visit. The first is the Nanstein Castle, where you can enjoy some traditional German food and beverages with your family while taking in a marvelous view of the town of Landstuhl. The second is the Rosselmuehle, where the water still turns the huge mill wheel.
Fun in the park
• Wildlife Park, Silz
In Park Silz, you will find a range of wonderful things to do with the whole family, from an adventure park and petting zoo to hiking tours and so much more. This park is home to 400 animals of 15 different European species. When entering the park, you will be able to see and meet some of the animals that have made the park their home up close and personal at the petting zoo. There are different trails to choose from once in the park, so you and your family can discover the wildlife on your own. You are able to choose between a short course, which takes approximately 45 to 60 minutes to walk, and a long course, which takes approximately 90 to 120 minutes. This is a great opportunity for you and the family to enjoy the outdoors while experiencing wildlife. It truly is a great nature experience for the whole family.

developmental steps
• We provide specific strategies and activities to help parents best interact with their children
• We schedule some home visits, in person or virtually, because this is the child’s natural environment for learning
• We provide video feedback, so that you can review and practice new ideas
• We constantly adjust your child’s individualized program as he/she progresses up the developmental levels
The Play Project is about fostering and deepening relationships. Children engage and communicate, because they
are internally motivated to do so as they seek relating to the most important people in their lives — the family members and caregivers!
When loved ones accurately read and respond appropriately to a child’s communication cues (often non-verbal) a child feels “heard”, validated and understood. This gives the child (and really, all of us as humans) a sense of safety, empowerment and agency. It is in the context of these safe and caring relationships that children flourish and make wonderful developmental gains.

PREPARING YOUR GARDEN FOR SPRING
by FindItGuide.comWhile driving around lately, you may have noticed the German road crews giving anything and everything a crew cut. They have all sorts of cool connectors that go on their work vehicles that trim, cut and shave off just about any type of vegetation in its path. There are even trimmers that rotate around the road markers like magic while the maintenance truck cruises next to it. You should take this as a sign it is time to get your own bushes, grass and garden areas ready for spring.
Generally, when it comes to bushes and hedges, you should not be afraid of cutting off too much (better to cut off too much than too little). In a lush growing area like Germany, where moisture is aplenty, if you are not aggressively cutting back, you can quickly get overrun. Weeding and clearing dead leaves is also a must. Here are tips to help you get your garden in shape.
• Get rid of the dead perennial leaves. Clearing away the foliage that is still there, promotes growth to flowers and grass. If any perennials have pushed their way up out of the ground due to the recent frost, push them back in so they will prosper.
• Pull those weeds. Probably the least favorite job to do for everyone, weed pulling can get rid of those nasty critters that choke out the development of all the beautiful plants you actually want to grow. Pulling them now will make the work easier because the ground is soft from the winter.
• Don’t forget to fertilize. Now that the ground is fully thawed (we hope!), spread fertilizers around shrubs, trees and perennials. Be careful when using weedkillers later in the season as the EU has laws regulating what can be used. If you PCSed over with products purchased in the U.S., be sure to see if they are approved for use in Germany.
• Look for broken limbs and branches. Winter storms can result in trees and bushes that have broken or splintered due to high winds, snow, ice, rain and anything else the German winters can throw at you. Cut off just before the broken area to help the vegetation regrow. If your evergreens suffered any dead ends from winter, cut off the tips.
ORTIGIA: SICILY’S AMAZING ISLAND CITY
by Nate Cairney contributing writerSicily seems mythical sometimes. After all, the island has been inhabited since almost after the last ice age. Homer took inspiration from the place for his epic Odyssey. Mt. Etna, an 11,000-foot active volcano, dominates the landscape. It’s a place famed for food, wine, sun, and organized crime. But Sicily is not mythical. It is real, and it is often incredible, especially in a place like Ortigia.
HOME TO ARCHIMEDES AND A WANDERER’S PARADISE
Technically, Ortigia is part of Siracusa, the hometown of Archimedes, the famous ancient Greek mathematician (he calculated pi!) and inventor who died fighting Romans and semi-inspired the most recent Indiana Jones movie. However, Ortigia is a place apart – literally, since it is an ancient city on a small island connected by two bridges to Siracusa – and culturally, as well.
Travelers love Ortigia, for many reasons. For one, the little island is a wanderer’s paradise. The streets are reminiscent of Venice, which is to say that most “streets” are actually labyrinthine alleys that snake every which direction, criss-cross one another, and leave newbies totally, wonderfully, and safely lost. Surprises lurk around every corner – local eateries that serve up freshly fried arancini (Sicilian specialties that are fried stuffed rice balls about the size and weight of a baseball, only much, much tastier than a baseball), museums, flower shops, and art studios.
EATING WELL IN ORTIGIA
Perhaps unsurprisingly (since, you know, this is Sicily), the food is divine. Let’s start with dessert. Gelaterias are everywhere. Nearly all of them are good. Same goes for cannolis (Harry Potter fans should check out Mangano, in which the best cannolis in the city are served by a guy who’s a dead ringer for the boy who lived).
For quick eats or picnics, there’s a daily open-air market that begins next to a 2,500-year-old temple to Apollo. The market has fresh fruits and veggies, candies, spices, fresh seafood, cheese, and much more. At the other end of the market street, you can find the semi-famed Caseificio Borderi. Antonio, the unabashedly seafood-loving genius who runs the place, makes a daily batch of empanadas. They’re not to be missed. The ingredients vary, and when he sells out of them, you’re out of luck. Tell him you love the Italian soccer club Juventus, and he might give you a hug. For restaurants, you can find pizza, seafood, and so much more — and often for reasonable prices.
WEATHER AND MUST-SEES
Then, of course, there’s the weather. Okay, Sicily can be crazy hot during the summer. But even then, Ortigia is a good spot. The sea breeze often makes it much cooler than inland destinations. Swimming is definitely encouraged in the summer and visitors can also seek solace in the dark, narrow streets, which act as manmade canyons. During the other three seasons, Ortigia is a paradise. You’ve got sun and warmth, which sometimes feel like miracles if you’ve been living in a gray northern European town from October to March.
Last, and certainly not least, Ortigia is packed with history and must-see sights. The first place on your list should be the gorgeous (and massive) Cathedral of Syracuse, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was built in the 7th century on the remains of a temple to Athena that had been constructed more than a thousand years prior to that: You can still see column remains in the towering exterior walls. It’s one of the most impressive pieces of architecture in Sicily, and draws tons of visitors each year.
Next on your list should be the Castello Maniace, which was built in the 13th century, and which remains imposing. It sits on the southern tip of the island, looks like something from Game of Thrones, and is beloved by seagulls. Finally, one of the best things to do in Ortigia is just to walk the coastline. This can easily be done in two or three hours when moving at leisurely pace. If there have been storms at sea, the waves are phenomenal. Don’t worry, though: Ortigia has massive, 20 to 30-foot-high, sea walls, so you’ll only feel a bit of salt spray.
SIDE TRIPS
If you’re feeling adventurous, use Ortigia as a home base from which to take day trips to the south and east parts of Sicily. Mt. Etna, with guided tours available, is easily visible from Ortigia, and is a 90-minute drive away. The hill towns of Novo and Ragusa are well worth a visit. And if you’re feeling particularly frisky, you can drive 2.5 hours west to Agrigento to see the jaw-dropping Valley of the Temples. It’s a little like having access to the Acropolis without having to navigate Athens traffic.
GETTING THERE AND WHEN TO GO
Ortigia is a fantastic year-round destination, though summers can be very hot. Cheap flights to Catania, 50 minutes north of Ortigia, are frequently available from European mainland destinations.

Spring is here, which of course means spring cleaning. But spring cleaning is not, and should not be, limited to your home…
When winter came around, you prepared your car for the colder weather. Now that the warmer weather is right around the corner, it’s time again to get your car ready for the change. For example, your winter tires, those used specifically for driving in snow and mud, should be replaced. Spring and summer time require tires that are made of harder rubber. Many vehicle owners have two sets of tires, and they either hire someone to change them out or do it themselves.
PREPARE YOUR VEHICLE FOR WARMER WEATHER
But changing tires is not as simple of a task as it may seem and should be just one of many facets to think about when preparing your vehicles for the transition from winter weather to the spring and summer seasons.
Auto skills centers operated by military bases around the KMC offer tools, hydraulic lifts and expertise from qualified employees to help make the experience a positive one.
Vehicle owners should conduct a full inspection of lighting, including turn signals, brake lights, high and low beam bulbs, and head and tail lights. These inspections are easy for individuals to do themselves and should be completed at least four to five times a year.
Air conditioning got more use last summer than was normal for this region, and the somewhat light winter we’ve had this year could be an indication of more high temperatures in coming months. To prepare for this, the entire air conditioning and heating mechanism should be checked for deficiencies. If needed, vehicles can receive air conditioning recharges with new Freon or other chemical mixtures added. Also, auto coolant or antifreeze will drain from a vehicle faster if the air conditioner is running more, so all of the various fluids should be checked and topped off or refilled at this time of year. With regard to tires, it is responsible thinking for vehicle owners to at least broach the subject of tread
wear. Most people with knowledge of auto repair and maintenance are in agreement that braking is the main saboteur of tire tread.
If a vehicle’s tires have low tread, there could be criminal charges brought when that person is involved, at fault or not, in a collision or event that is injurious to another person. With the safety of military members always at the forefront of ownership and operation of personal owned vehicles, German police and U.S. military vehicular patrol units make it their business to routinely check that tires, rims and other areas of the vehicle meet the proper specifications.
U.S. drivers in Germany should be aware that cars, trucks and
vans here are accustomed to being driven at high speeds and most are manufactured to handle it. Domestic vehicles from the U.S., however, are often not manufactured with these European variables in mind, and they in turn take a beating from drivers who push them past their usual limits. In short, know your car and know its limits. Each season’s turn is an opportunity to do a complete checkup and perform routine maintenance as well as to make any changes to your vehicle that will enhance its performance. The best drivers will often prove to be the smartest drivers, and smart drivers take the time to make sure their car is up-to-date and well maintained.

IT’S POTTY TIME! WHOOT-WHOOT!
by Lisa Helenius contributing writerHey parents! Looking for some poo-poo-pointers?
How about some tinkletips? Well, you came to the right place!
If you are working on the potty training process with your little one, here are some general tips as well as some advice from the real experts — actual parents like you!
Signals that your child is ready for potty training surround the senses. Readiness is sometimes hard to pinpoint, but these signals may indicate it is the right time:
Know it — Your child alerts to needing a diaper change. They “know” it has happened!
Feel it — Your child wakes up from naps with a dry diaper. This means they are able to control their bowel or bladder function. They may also tell you “I’m pooping” as they are sitting in the corner playing with toys. They might also comment on how a wet or dirty diaper feels.
Say it — Your child voices an interest in the potty. They might ask you what you’re doing when you are using the toilet. They might watch a sibling if they are going pee or poop on the potty. They might express an interest in potty books. They might ask for help to try sitting on the potty.
See it — If your child is standing in the bathtub and pees, see if they are watching the pee visually.
If it’s warm outside and they are playing outside “al fresco,” are they looking as well? When you empty a poopy diaper into the toilet, involve your child in the process. Say “bye” to the poop and let them flush it away!
Try it — Your child wants to pretend to sit on a potty or helps a baby doll go potty. If you have a small training potty in your living room, this can encourage potty play and they can get on / off independently.
And now, some words of wisdom from parents like you!
When your child has an accident just state what happened “you went pee in your pants/ on the floor. We need to clean that up and next time we will go pee in the potty.” Mistakes are part of learning, just address it and move on with having fun! —
Rebecca, momSaying “Remember, your pee goes in the potty,” or asking “Where does your pee go?” got a much better response than “You need to try to go pee now.” Also, we have them wear just pants/shorts without underwear for months after potty training begins just to remove the barrier of underwear, which is a lot harder to pull down quickly and far enough.” — Meredith, mom
“Atoddler is ready for potty training when they wake up from a nap or sleeping all night and they have a dry diaper. Even if they pee in that diaper seconds after being dry. This helps a parent know the child has the ability for control.” — Judy, mom
“Ask your child if they want to go potty. Then let it go and do your best not to stress over it or try to control it. That’s the hardest part as parents can’t help and compare their child’s potty training ability to other children who potty trained earlier.” — Bob, dad
“Ihad my kids sit backwards on the potty. This actually helps with bowel and bladder evacuation and lets them face the back, where I had a laminated potty for them to put pictures of pee and poop in and out of the potty picture.” — Elsje, mom
“Ialways go back to be patient and don’t pressure. There are very few adults who wet or poop themselves! It is a process that takes a different amount of time for each kid and will happen biologically in time” — Vincent, dad
“When kids are really ready to potty train use training underwear instead of “pull-ups” type products so that they can better feel when they have had an accident. I save the pullups for when we are riding in the car etc and an accident would be really difficult.
Also there are color changing stickers that can be placed in the bottom of the potty to reveal fun designs when pee (warm water) is applied. Also using a small potty where their feet can touch the ground and knees are above hips, less scary and better for their little pelvic floors!” — Wendy, mom

LUXEMBOURG: SMALL COUNTRY, BIG OUTDOORS
by Nate Cairney contributing writerIn terms of European outdoor adventure, Luxembourg is often an afterthought. This is understandable. Luxembourg is small. It has no Alps. If you’re taking autoroutes, it takes about a half-hour to drive through the entire country, even when roads near the capital city are under construction.
But if you’re into hiking or biking, you should think again about Luxembourg. Adventurers will find castles, secret valleys, forests, and waterfalls. Outdoor Luxembourg is perfect for a day trip or long weekend.
LUXEMBOURG, NATURALLY
Despite the fact that Luxembourg can sometimes look like a city-state on a map, the country is kind of a natural paradise. In relative terms, Luxembourg is more heavily forested than Norway, Germany or Switzerland. Rivers snake everywhere. In the north, especially, it almost counts as an outdoor experience to drive the winding two-lane roads that seem to bring beautiful villages and valleys around every hilly turn. The country is served by an extensive and well-maintained trail system. Any way you look at it, outdoor lovers have plenty of great options.
MULLERTHALLUXEMBOURG’S JEWEL
The Mullerthal trail is the best outdoor destination in Luxembourg, and a pretty solid contender for one of the best in Europe. If you spend a long weekend hiking (or biking) different parts of the Mullerthal, you’re guaranteed to come away charmed and impressed. The trail loops for more than 100 kilometers through the Luxembourger Ardennes (known in Luxembourgish as Éislek, and connected to the same forest that stretches from southern
Belgium into Germany’s Eifel region). If you wanted to, you could spend several days winding your way along the trail and staying at beautiful Luxembourg inns, but most hikers choose to pick off small parts of the trail as day trips.
Broken into three distinct routes (known straightforwardly as Routes 1, 2, and 3), the Mullerthal area is a UNESCO Global Geopark (basically a world-class protected natural area) that is known as “Little Switzerland.”
For those located in the KMC, Route 2 is a fantastic place to start. The trail begins in Echternach (30 minutes away from Trier), and doesn’t disappoint. A good day of hiking will get you through Wolves’ Canyon (no wolves remain, a little sadly, but the name and place are both cool), to a beautiful little waterfall known as the Schéissendëmpel, and deep into rock gorges.
Online maps and good preparation resources are available at https://www. visitluxembourg.com/tour/stage-trailmullerthal-trail-route-2
HAPPY TRAILS
From north to south, Luxembourg has so many trails that are worth exploring. A personal favorite is the Escapardenne Eislek Trail, which begins in northern Luxembourg and stretches into southeast Belgium. This trail is also more than 100 kilometers long,
so day trippers would do well to start in Kautenbach, where the trail begins, or in Enscherange, which is a bit further north. Either way, you’ll get a hearty dose of unspoiled forests, shockingly clear rivers, and amazing ridge views.
Southern Luxembourg also has great trail options. The 90-kilometer-long Minett Trail is a gem. It winds through red rock country (not the same as you’ll find in the western US, but still… the rocks are red, the landscape is rugged, and as a bonus you never have to worry about rattlesnakes or scorpions!), which also used to be mining country. Consequently, some of the manmade features, like quarries, are almost as interesting as the natural views.
Castle hikes are famous in Luxembourg, as well. Another favorite is the Beaufort Castle hike, which begins in the Beaufort Castle parking lot and then gets way more natural. The castle itself is lovely. But what follows – the forest, rock formations, and semistrenuous elevation gain (more than 600 feet) – gives the experience an added oomph. Probably the most beautiful Luxembourg castle hike, however, can be found on trails near Vianden Castle, which is one of the country’s most breathtaking buildings. Set in a gorgeous valley on the river Our, Vianden Castle is well worth a day trip.
Getting there By car, it takes 1.5 hours to reach Echternach (near Trier) and 2.5 hours to get to Kautenbach in the heart of the northern Éislek. Reaching Pétange, where the Minett Trail begins, takes a bit less than 2 hours.
