message from your Editors Welcome to the second issue of 99, Techno! From smart phones to robots like the Mars Rovers, we are all living in an age of great advancement in technology. Although phones are banned at our school, technology still plays a major role in our lives. In this issue, we explore both the popular and unpopular aspects of technology. Social media apps were used as inspiration for our color scheme and layouts while old video games inspired our fonts. Dive into the Techno issue to learn about our very own teachers’ expectations of technology and a few TikTok famous students at JD. We had a lot of fun creating this issue and we hope you enjoy it! As always, thanks to the administration for their continued support of our publication. - The Speaking Eagle staff

Forging the Modern age of Gaming A throwback to old-school NES and PC video games Adrian Steinvoort The 90’s: the year when video games crawled from the burning pits of computers into peoples’ lives, these are three of the video games whose burning trail of soul-devouring power will be remembered forever.

The Legend of Zelda

Released Febuary 21st 1986 as an adventure game, this game had a serious impact on the gaming industry. Compared to the rest of the games in this throwback this is easily the most complicated. The game was massive for its time and extremely confusing to navigate, however it was still massively popular. This game was popular enough to spawn the massively legendary Zelda series, which all kept to the game’s key concepts: find dungeon, do some stuff, find a tool, fight the boss, repeat until Zelda is saved. Honestly a wondefully simple concept. The most current Zelda game is Breath of the Wild.

4

Doom Released December 10th 1993, this game had one of the biggest impacts in gaming history. It was almost fully 3D. The game was very simple, get from point A to point B and kill everything in your path, once you arrive at point B go on to point C, very simple very violent. This game would go onto to be the big daddy of the shooting genre, inspiring the genre as a whole. If you like a shooting game you can thank Doom. Today Doom still has a healthy player base though many players are awaiting the arrival of Doom Eternal, the latest Doom Game.

Super Mario Bros

Released September 13th 1985, Mario has been bouncing his way into people hearts for many years. Super Mario Bros, otherwise known as some random Italian man shoves his boot through some expired mushrooms until his eventual dumping of the fat turtle into the lava soup. Wonderfully simple, wonderfully popular, if you haven’t played Super Mario Bros in some form you haven’t really played a video game.

TOp Gaming Characters Students in Hutter’s class design video game characters through Pixel

Chitra Satyanarayan Angelique Clark

“Creating my character was rough because I avoided doing it, I eventually started drawing then it all came together. I started off with trying to draw a circle for the head in pixel and it ended up being a weird strawberry shape so I just went with it. I wanted a character that looked strong so I made it very bulky and wanted different shades of red. This took me a week to because figuring out the code was difficult because if I messed up one little square I had to go back ten steps.”

Dorothy Czyryca

“Aria was born with an unnaturally low regard for human life. As the daughter of a deceased lowly merchant, Aria did not possess much and lived in the slums of a major city. Whilst living there, she was exposed to an abnormal amount of violence from a young age, therefore desensitising her to violence and death. Following an early death by car accident, Aria’s soul went to the Underworld to determine whether or not she would ascend to heaven or fall to hell. Due to the pureness of her spirit but high disregard for human life, the three Judges named her “Reaper”, charged with the ability to once again ascend to the mortal realm to reap the souls of sinners. Once reborn as a Reaper, Aria loses all memories of her previous life and does not remember anyone, or anything, about her previous life. Following the Reaping of a sinner of high rank ria finds a clue about her past life in his office his leads her to the conclusion that perhaps her death wasn’t just a freak accident after all, and that her parents could have been more powerful than she was led to believe.”

The Entrance to Central Elementary School

While driving past Central Elementary School in Pleasant Grove, Utah, you wouldn’t expect anything extraordinary to be going on inside. However, there is magic taking place inside this building everyday. Central Elementary School is home to the Christa McAuliffe Space Center. The Space Center is a place where groups of people can sign up to be crew members on a special mission. for either 2.5 or 5 hours. In one of four simulators, each crew member gets a special job to do such as fly the ship or be an engineer or even be the captain. It is a fun place to go to bond with friends and family and, in the spring of 2020, it’s getting an upgrade.

remodel at the space center Local elemetary school getting new cosmic simulators By: Olivia Thomas Not only will the remodel come with 2 new simulators, but all of the 4 current ships will be getting a makeover. The USS Magellan, USS Phoenix, USS Odyssey, and USS Galileo, the existing simulators, are all very special and fun crew on. “There are so many unique attributes to the ships that make them enjoyable in their own ways,” Director of the Space Center James Porter says. While on board the ships, crews experience unique events tailored to them because behind every mission is a group of dedicated volunteers and staff members. These people run every aspect of the mission, from the computers to the characters you interact with. “There are so many people who have contributed so much to our program through volunteer work and it has really made a huge difference,” Porter says.

Along with the new simulators, the Space Center will also be getting a new planetarium. “The planetarium is going to amazing,” Porter says. “It’s really amazing how little we see because of light pollution and other obstructions so I am excited to open up the heavens a bit.” The Space Center will be closed down for a few weeks early next year while they tear down the old building and put up the new one. Make sure to visit before next spring to see the original simulators.

emember that 2008 iCarly movie “iGo to Japan”? Mrs. Benson and Spencer find Carly, Sam, and Freddie after they got lost using a locator chip that Mrs. Benson installed in Freddie’s head. Though this is a funny, ridiculous scene, the phone app “Life360” has made this a reality for me and many other teens. The Life360 app constantly tracks location. It detects when you and your phone has arrived or left certain locations such as your home or school. So, my parents get a notification every time I leave the house and arrive at school in the morning or even when my phone has a low battery. There is also a special feature on the app that detects driving habits. It records how fast I’m driving, whether or not I’ve used my phone while my vehicle is in motion, and whether I’ve “hard-braked.” It can also detect car crashes. My parents installed the app on my phone when I was a sophomore in high school. When I asked my parents why they use the app, they simply said safety. Although I understand the purpose of the app if I were to get in a car crash or if I am ever put in a dangerous situation like a kidnapping, it has made my high school experience into something entirely different than I imagined. Unlike the movies about high school that I watched as a kid like High School Musical, I can’t rebelliously sneak out of my house or even go to someone’s house without my parents knowing. I’ve always had a great, open relationship with my parents and though I’ve never felt the need to hide things from them, I acknowledge the great difference in the way our generation is learning and growing into adults in comparison to our parents.

A Gen Z kid’s perspective The influence of the app Life360 on teens today

Many of our parents were completely unmonitored and left to their own devices in high school. Unlike today, there simply wasn’t the technology back then for their parents to constantly know where their teens were and what they were up to. Our parents were arguably more independent when they were our age because of this. They had to make their own decisions based on their logic, and learn from their experiences. As a whole, our generation has been more monitored by our parents because of smartphones. Whether or not the Life 360 app is installed on your phone, we are all quickly accessible by our parents due to cell phones. We are just a text away. In this way, technology has changed the way teens learn and grow. Our parents play a large role in our lives, especially in the decisions we make. In turn, I believe they influence the people we become more than ever. The features on Life360 are revolutionary, but just like other technology today, there are both benefits and disadvantages. I think the key is finding a balance in our world full of technology. Remember to unplug!

Ms. Bernards is young, relatable, and experienced in some of the same things the student body has, technology-wise. “The Motorola Razor was pretty big when I was in high school,” Bernards said. “The iPhone first came out when I was in high school, too,” Bernards said. Being a science teacher, Bernards knows quite a bit about technology, past and present. “In high school, I honestly did not think about technology. I’m bummed that we don’t have hover shoes, though,” Bernards said. Just like us, growing up, Bernards liked video games such as Pokemon on her Nintendo DS, and MarioParty on her GameCube along with her siblings. As time went on, Bernards found an affinity for smartphones. “Technology has gotten more powerful and can do more things, all the while getting smaller and smaller. Hover shoes could be on the horizon,” Bernards said.

If there is one person to ask about technology, and technological improvements, it is Dr. Duane. Surrounded by computers, 3D printers, and always with a smartphone and smartwatch, he is the right man to approach. “See I am actually before computers, at least computers in schools,” Duane said. “I always expected technology to improve and things to get more efficient, but I didn’t realize that there would be a total transformation to the digital world where everything would be controlled by digital devices,” Duane continued. “I am one of the few oldies who think its good to embrace technology and use it to my advantage, not one of those who says, ‘Oh damn technology, it’ll be the end of us.’ No it’s for everybody, I’m totally pro, totally positive about these improvements,” Duane said. Just like teenagers, Dr. Duane love his smartphone. “My favorite piece of technology has to be the smartphone because I can’t get through the day without it. If I am driving to work and realize that I left my phone at home I have to turn around and go back,” Duane explained. “It’s my calendar, it’s all my accounts, my schedule, and it even it monitors my heart. I cannot go without it,” Duane said. Mr. Christiansen is one of Juan Diego’s finest math teachers, and a technology afficionado. “I love the internet and computers. I love all the doors it opens to various pieces of information and the connectivity it offers us. The world has shrunk dramatically because of our connectivity and grown dramatically because of the information at our fingertips,” Christiansen said. “It’s so much different now than when I was a kid,” Christiansen said. When thinking about the future technology, you imagine hoverboards and self lacing shoes, and Mr. Christiansen thinks no differently. “When I was in high school, I distinctly remember reading about the future of flying cars and solar powered cars,” Christiansen said. “Obviously, I never envisioned the biggest changes to the modern world probably involve phones and tablets,” Christiansen finished.

Apple Airpods ($160)

Airpods have become increasingly popular, especially now that the third generation released, and it isn’t very hard to see why. They are expensive, but are well worth it. They come with a charging case that allows for 24+ hours of battery life and can hold a charge on their own for about five hours. You can also use Siri and answer calls on them as well. If you decide to get the third generation, you will get a customizable fit and wireless charging in addition to the ones mentioned previously, but you will also have to spend $100 more. They are also customizable, which is an added bonus.

Amazon Echo Dot ($40)

The Amazon Echo Dot is very versatile. You can use it as an alarm clock because it has an easyto-read analog clock on it, as well as a quality speaker. If you don’t want to use it as a speaker, you can connect it to a different speaker while still using it as a source of music. It also has all of the features that Alexa has, so you can ask it questions in the morning, such as “how is the weather forecast?” One of the coolest features is that it can do things around the house, such as activate lights. This is a cheaper, but equally great alternative to the regular Amazon Alexa.

ihome Weather Tough Speaker ($40)

This speaker is a cheap, but great alternative to speakers that may cost you 200-300 dollars. It has very good, deep sound quality and can hold an 8 hour charge. It is also bluetooth, which makes it more portable. It comes with carrying straps so it is easily portable. You are also able to answer calls on the speaker, as it has a microphone built inside the speaker. There is also a low power mode, allowing the speaker to run for 14 hours, but on a lower volume.

4 LAST MINUTE GIFTS Cool, useful technology gifts everyone will appreciate this holiday season Max Merhi

Mophie Power Station ($30)

The Mophie Power Station is a very useful gift, especially for those always needing a charge for their phone. It is customizable with six different color options to choose from. The regular Power Station can fully charge a phone twice for approximately 10 hours with only one charge, which is a great deal for only $30. There are also other Mophie Power Stations in different sizes, including small, regular, extra large, and extra extra large. The biggest ones can even charge multiple phones. Plus, these chargers can fit in your pocket, which is always a nice bonus.

Fitbit Inspire ($100)

The Fitbit Inspire is a quality workout watch that has many features useful for everyone. It can track your heart rate and find a target heart rate for workouts to get the most out of a run or time at the gym. It also tracks your activity level and other things such as sleep and calorie intake. If you are low on activity, the watch will prompt you to get up and move. If you use the app, you can input data and track your fitness and health goals. I also like that the watch is customizable and has many different colors, bands, clips, and even faces.

To start this dangerous trick of creating Pinterest desserts I decided to try something simple, a cupcake an oreo flower. For this one I just used a boxed cake mix so that I could reduce stress for my mom and myself. While me and my friend, Breanna Quigley, split the oreo’s my dad took it upon himself to eat the other half. We put them onto the cupcake, and then put the frosting around. Bre had been putting the frosting on the cupcakes, and as she did more the better they began to look.

By: Ashley Hemmersmeier

A Sweet and Cruel Reality The Perfect Pinterest Illusion Like many people I loved looking at perfect deserts and always hoped to try them myself. I have seen plenty of memes of how they turned out verus how they look in real life. I wasn’t sure if they were just to make the meme of if they were actually challenging. I took a saturday and dedicated it to baking and really trying to make a dessert look good.

22

After a good attempt at cupcakes, moving on to the oreo balls wasn’t supposed to be really hard, but it was the hardest thing I have done in my life. At the beginning, crumbling the cookies was simple, and mixing the cream cheese was simple. But then I had to bail them together, and that’s where the trouble began. With my mixer I couldn’t completely smooth out the oreo bits, and then they were oddly shaped. After they were frozen we dipped them into a light brown melt, and when it is supposed to be a snowman brown isn’t quite the right color. I was trying to think creatively and I had put powdered sugar. It began to at least look white, but a gel I had bought didn’t stick very well and my snowman turned out to be very cringy.

For my last endeavor, I had attempted a cake. It was a pink one with frosting dripping and some frosting that resembled a tree, that were both pink and green. Even though I have figured out I am incredibly terrible at desert art I was still very ambitious. This cake has sprinkles and lots of frosting. Bre had frosted the cake and them I had attempted to add the trees. I was starting with an idiotic attempt of putting the tip outside of the bag, which obviously didnt work. I then put it in the right bad and frosted that correctly, but the trees never turned out to look right. Halfway through Kristi Deffner came and did the top trees, but by the time the cake was finished, so was my dream of being a professional baker. In the end, even though something may look disastrious it often still tastes wonderful, obviously taste is more imporrtant than looks. ook disastrious it often still tastes wonderful, obviously taste is more imporrtant than looks.

Cool JD Some fun things 2048

It is a very popular game and you probably have seen many people play it. The object is to make a tile with 2048 on it by sliding the tiles around. You can keep going after you make 2048 and see how big of a number you can make.

4th and goal 2018

This is such an addicting game. You choose your team by their helmets, and you choose your opponent. The game is from a birds eye view and it has an arcade style to it. There are no penalties but other than that it has the regular football rules.

Goalkeeper Premier

Goalkeeper Premier is a game where you control the goalie of a team from the Premier League of your choice. It is set up in a tournament style and has 5 rounds and the ball gets harder to block each round. When you stop the ball you get a glove and if you catch the ball you get two gloves. Once you get three gloves you get one point, and the other team has 7 shots to beat you.

Games to do in class Moto X3M

This is an online racing game that you race your bike against time throughout various obstacles on the course. Some levels have moving obstacles in them as well. If you do flips in the air you can decrease your time to get three stars if you fail the trick or you hit an obstacle you will blow up and lose time.

Stardoll

It is a classic dress up game, but on your laptop. You can dress up your doll and then go and talk to other players that are online. It is like club penguin, both are online but you can do more in Stardoll.

Basketball Stars

This is a single player game. You choose your team, but this game isn’t licensed by the NBA so they have to make their own team names. You still have the players names though. The players have their own superstar action after you play well with them in a game. There are no fouls, but there are three pointers, dunks, and regular shots.

Uplifting Instagram quotes and accounts

Social Media’s Bad Rep 26

It’s no secret that social media is mostly perceived as a negative influence on children and teens. In fact, some people claim it is a leading factor in teenage depression in 2019. While social media can have bad effects on people, there are many uplifting and inspiring accounts found on many social media platforms that are far from negative.

@quotesdailylife is an account with inspiring quotes and aesthetic pictures to uplift people’s spirits. People often blame social media for the depression or sadness in teens, but apps like Instagram and Snapchat can be used positively.

@law.of.attraction1111 is an account that posts daily quotes for each day of the month. They also have other dates, such as 2020, where they encourage you to have a good year. Accounts such as these are great to have while scrolling through your feed to help you get through your day and inspire you to keep working.

Sophomore Chance Srey uses Tik Tok as a way to “cure her boredom”. “If I am really invested, the longest I will spend making a Tik Tok is 30 minutes, and if I’m not that invested, it’ll probably take me 5 minutes.” Srey says, “I only make Tik Toks if I’m bored and don’t have homework, so I rarely make Tik Toks now, but I mostly use it to cure my boredom.” Srey finished. “I don’t really know how I got my likes/followers, it just kind of happened.”

Junior Brie Greenwald first began using Tik Tok as a joke, but is now addicted to the app. “I make Tik Toks when I’m bored so I really don’t know how many I make, but I literally got followers and likes and I was like alright, cool.” Greenwald says, “I spend like 15 seconds making one Tik Tok.” Greenwald finished. “I take Tik Tok VERY seriously, definitely might become my full time job.”

Freshman Carla Hernandez first began using Tik Tok as a joke, up until her Tik Toks about a ‘love interest’ overflowed with likes and comments. “I originally used Tik Tok as joke then people started following me and then they wanted more parts to the Tik Tok that got me ’famous’ ” Hernandez said, “I guess I just started doing what they wanted, and I found it funny about how much they cared about this funny ‘love story’.” Hernandez finished.

S Tier (Top tier) Home to the best of the best. Assorted Cats Cats are the literal life blood of the internet and cursed cats are extremely versatile templates. From Cursed to Crying they’re excellent for conveying emotion. And let’s not forget Grumpy Cat who sadly passed away this year, let God grace his angry soul. Keanu Reeves Keanu’s E3 presentation gave us many memes ranging from short Keanu to ‘Breathtaking’ Keanu, and all of them offered and delivered with great potential A Tier (High Tier) Just a bunch of good bois. Pointing Spider-Man Iconic. This is a meme that started a revolution that also brought us the “me and the boys” meme. On its own it’s an amazingly solid meme to point similarites between things. Blinking dude Versatility is keystone in meme relevance, and this meme’s just got it. From being a surprised response to the remixed versions that cut and rearrange the proportions of the face, it’s what I call pretty epic. B Tier (Mid-High Tier) “You did good kid.” -Peter B. Parker Galaxy Brain It’s versatile, simple, and has some decent variants, but honestly the funniest it can get is to make it obscenely long to see how brain dead you can be. Gnomed OOH. Short, sweet, and absolutely infuriating to come across for the 28277th time when watching meme compilations. Am I a Joke to You? It’s funny to think that his response to being this low on the list is “Am I a joke to you?”

meme Jose S. Anaya Of course this is just my opinion so I stg if I hear one more person complain about how “Oh god you’re such a normie you don’t even know what’s funny,” I will vibe check your knee caps into 2020. C Tier (Mid Tier) Mostly Mediocre.

Stonks It was a servicable meme that helped explain some dumb logic and that’s enough. UWU

(◕‿◕✿) (ʘ‿ʘ✿) (◕ㅁ◕✿)

Boomers Although the “Okay Boomer” meme is definently S tier, the more traditional “Phone BAD Book GOOD” boomer memes are just aggravating enough to be funny and not stale. F Tier (Bottom tier) These memes are just traaaash like not one redeming quality. Tik Tok As an app itself Tik Tok got memed on by a majority of the internet and tbh it was just dry. Making fun of something just for trying to be a new platform, or for what is on it, is toxic and invalid. Le Monke I hate this meme so much. It’s stupid and dumb and dumb and stupid and it’s just torture to hear that stupid voice say “Uh oh Stinky ha ha.”
