The Fresh Issue Volume 2 Issue 1

“If you’re not making someone else’s life better then you’re wasting your time. Your life will become better by making other people’s lives better.” - The Fresh Price of Bel Air

A Message From Your Editors The theme of our first issue of the Ninety-Nine magazine for the 2019-2020 school year is Fresh! We originally thought of this theme in late July after Mr. Salts’ infamous email describing the new policies for students at JD. We were inspired to create a magazine describing everything new or “fresh” at our school, from the new policies, many new faculty members, and popular trends at JD. Even most members of our Speaking Eagle staff this year are new. This issue focuses on every aspect of the word “fresh.” Fresh is new, vibrant, and exciting. We used bright summery colors and plants in nature to invoke our theme. Explore popular hangouts for teens, learn about our new teachers, and experience this beautiful season of fall in the Salt Lake Valley. We are really proud of this issue and we thank the administration at JD for their continued support of our publication. We hope you enjoy Fresh! -The Speaking Eagle Staff

A New Style

Here Then There Story by Ashley Hemmersmeier

I walked outside to the cold wind hitting my face; I looked around and saw flowers starting to bloom. Spring was in full swing. For my birthday, my parents got me a camera and I was taking pictures of our house before we left. I was told that we were going to be moving to Boise, Idaho from our apartment in New York. “Haely, let’s get going. Idaho will have even more pictures for you to take,” my mom called from the kitchen. I took another picture of the wall I painted with my mom when I was 7 before running to the car. We drove to the airport and parked. I slid out of the backseat and ran to catch up with my mom while getting my backpack on. We checked in and got on the plane, ready for the seven hours and two plane rides ahead of us. I looked out the window and said goodbye to my home while blinking away tears; I was leaving when life was starting again. Soon, we arrived in a new city. Everything about Idaho was different than New York. In seven hours, my whole life had completely changed. The grass in Idaho was green, and you could see it without it being covered in clutter and trash. We drove to a hotel, looking at a blazing red and orange skies. I kept taking pictures of the sky. My mom had put me in the local high school for the next week after moving in. My dad had been out for work while

6

my mom, brother, and I packed the apartment. He had begun building a house, because it was affordable and it was our only option to have enough space. A week later, we moved into the house and I went to a new school. I got into a chemistry class and the teacher let me know that I would need to work on the entire year that I missed, or else I’d have to take the class again. When I got to Algebra II, the teacher said the same thing. I went and took a seat in the back next to this boy. I obviously chose wrong because he knew all the answers and the teacher called on him all the time. “Nico, how do I find the enthalpy of delta H off of this graph?” the teacher, Mrs. Frazier, asked him. “Easy. You take the products minus the reaction,” he said, smiling from ear to ear, proud of how he could answer the question with such ease. “Very good. Haely, can you tell if this is exothermic and endothermic?” “I-I don’t know. Is it Endothermic?” I see Nico shake his head out of the corner of my eye. I look down at my paper and blink away the tears. All week, I struggled in finding my way around the halls, taking notes, making friends, but especially in chem. I was also put next to Nico in chem and, at the end of the week, my teacher told me he

was going to be tutoring me. At first, I was upset because I wanted to prove I could handle it on my own, but I also realized, they were giving me a friend. “Haely, stop doodling and work on the problem. How do you find the pH of hydroxide?” Nico asked. “You take the negative log of the given molarity,” I said, while coloring in the leaf of a flower. “Wait what?” he said, confused. I looked up and repeated myself to him. “That was amazing, you got all the terminology right and everything!” I realized he was right and I had the biggest, goofiest grin on my face. “See, I am teachable, thanks to you!” I said. We start laughing like crazy and Nico put his hand on my knee. We ended up becoming good friends, and while he taught me chem and math, I taught him how to take a good picture, which was by no means easy for either of us. He took me to Prom, and we started dating. I stopped feeling anxious whenever I went into a new class, and I began to relax and everything around me felt new, but also familiar.. With him I never felt anxious anymore, I began to feel relaxed, like a fresh new version of myself.

Unique Uniforms The cleanest new jerseys the school has designed By: Max Merhi

Juan Diego’s new navy and white Jordan basketball jersey. “I love the font on the front,” Junior basketball player Jag Gill-Martin said. “Being Jordan sponsored is a great privilege and I think we will continue to prove we deserve the sponsorship,” Gill-Martin fnished.

Juan Diego’s new football jerseys displaying the school colors of white, navy, and teal well. “My favorite part of these jerseys is the simplcity and just how clean they are,” Junior football player Michael Clay said. Sometimes, less is more, and that is the case with the new football jerseys.

10

This past year, Juan Diego partnered with Eastbay and became an offcial Nike-branded school. Because of this, many new sports teams have received new uniforms, including soccer, football, cross country, basketball, and others. They are simple, yet clean and appealing. The teal, white, and navy not only school colors, but they match perfectly and stand out amongst other school’s jerseys. All of the jersey shave other small, yet vital details that enhance the look. As they say, “look good, feel good, play good.”

Juan Diego’s new navy soccer jersey with a sleek camo print. “I didn’t want the jerseys to be too bright and flashy, but I still wanted a cool design,” girl’s soccer coach Joe Baca said. “I like the camo because it wasn’t too plain,” Baca said.

This is cross country’s teal and navy checkered jersy. “We’re proud to have the only teal uniforms here at JD; It’s an underrepresented color,” Cross country coach Joe Elliot said.

Shoot and Loot

The long awaited sequel of Borderlands 2 By: Adrian Steinvoort

Borderlands 3 is a game about two things: shooting and looting. The game is the long awaited sequel to Borderlands 2, a 7 year wait to be specific, and, let me tell you it was well worth the wait. The game’s story is essentially that you are a vault hunter, meaning you want to open vaults, so you get hired then join and show up to a group called the Crimson Raiders

You get 4 characters to choose from, each with 3 different skill trees. You can have magic, strange disfigured monsters, magic grabby hands, and holograms. It is a strange cast of characters, but thats the what you get with the Borderlands series.

After you choose a character, you get thrown on then off the bus, and you meet the tutorial robot named Claptrap, I was warned that Claptrap was annoying but nothing could prepare me for what came next: he doesnt shut up. He just keeps talking and talking and talking.

After the tutorial finishes, you get some of the plot of Calipso twins unite bandits. Calipsos are bad and they want to open great vault. More importantly however, you get your main skill, either a robot suit, magic hands, a monkey with a shotgun, or a decoy. However, your little gang wants to open the Great Vault instead, Bam. Plot summarized.

After some basic missions, I was lucky enough to find a epic gun. It came from a strange dwarf with a backpack called a loot tink, but don’t have an illusion that he just gave it to me. No, I shot him, and the fact he was healthier than the boss scared me.

12

Soon, I finished the starting missions, along with an unholy amount of side quests. That brings me to my main problem with the game: the amount of grinding per level. I have no problem with doing hard work for a good weapon but for my basic perks? I have a problem with that. Its annoying boring and frustrating. With each new world, you have to visit you’re underleveled, and, even if you do every single side quest available to you, your still at least 1 level behind, and that’s a huge issue. One level is a problem. Two levels is even worse a 3 three level difference is true pain. So what’s the icing on this toxic cake? You get one new perk and you need and lot of points to get to the next set of skills. Other than that gunplay and abilities, which are a whole lot of fun, the characters are interesting and the bo sses are challenging. An example would be The Gigamind from Promethea, (no seriously it was a brain in a jar). It was lots of fun to shoot with a mech. Honestly this game was worth 7 years of waiting and everyone I’ve asked has loved it. 8/10 would recommend to any bored gamers out there.

Newest Faculty

Juan Diego’s recently added teachers By: Kailey Mulcahy

You might find Hannah Ashmore teaching AP Literature and Composition, Honors Shakespeare, and American Literature. “My family and I have been a part of this community for three years. I am thrilled to be serving in a new role with this community as a teacher,” Ashmore says about joining Juan Diego’s staff. “My family and I love traveling. We travel to Southern California often, so we can replenish our Vitamin D and dip our toes in sandy beaches. We are huge basketball fans. We love cheering on the Jazz, and we are excited to cheer on the JDCHS Eagles this year,” Ashmore finishes.

Michelle Moynihan teaches many classes including Freshman and Sophomore Theology, Social Justices, and Human Rights. “I am a JD grad and I love the school,” Moynihan started. “I think there is so much that is unique about JD and I love the community that it has. I also love that I get to teach what I love and am passionate about,” she said. Moynihan also loves reading, especially Harry Potter. “I also love to hike and do anything outdoors,” Moynihan said. “I have 3 sisters and we love spending time together, even if it is just sitting around drinking coffee. I love dogs and I will take any chance I can get to pet one. I am a U of U and Notre Dame grad and I love both schools equally for different reasons.”

Mark Hutter picked up the classes Exploring Computer Science, Game Development, and AP Computer Science. You might also find him coaching tennis and soccer. “I enjoy skiing with my daughter, who is in the 1st grade, playing tennis, working out at the gym and reading!” Hutter says. “Juan Diego is a great place to work and become apart of a Chrisitan community! I look forward to building our computer science curriculum!”

Our Very Own Influencers The people at Juan Diego who make our community what it is By: Ellie Kuehn When thinking of leaders of student and community life, Director of Campus Life Dave Brunetti comes to mind. Mr. Brunetti has been a part of the Juan Diego community for a total of ten years, and all of this time and effort adds up. “Well, officially my role is Director of Campus Life. I work with all the people who are involved with campus life to oversee those programs,” Brunetti said. “ I also oversee and make sure the spiritual faith direction of the campus is kind of on track,” Brunetti continued. “Unofficially, my role is, well it is hard to say. I think I have a tiny, little bit of dean, a little bit of counselor, a little bit of old, grandpa mean guy, a lot of little slices kind of come out in my unofficial capacity. I may influence more things than I do officially,” Brunetti said. Being a key leader at Juan Diego, Brunetti is a major influence amongst the community as a whole. “I have never thought about it that way,” Brunetti said. “I like to see myself as just being authentic. I am who I am, and perhaps if that influences you, that is a really great thing,” Brunetti continued. Strong presence and opinions also contribute to the leader’s influence. “People that know Mr. B, whether it’s a personal relationship, or the students that I get to know a little bit closer, know that they are pretty much going to get me full force,” Brunetti said. “I am going to love you through the bad, the thick, the happy, the sad, all of it,” Brunetti finished.

20

Chloe Redican, also a Senior, is a friendly face at Juan Diego who isn’t afraid to go out of her way to be involved. As a member of the volleyball and lacrosse teams, peer ministry, Student Faith and Liturgy, and ambassadors, Redican is highly active in the community. “I see myself as an influence just because I put a lot of time and effort into these activities at school, and out of school,” Redican said. “I feel like I have influenced the Juan Diego community through the spirit of Juan Diego by going to almost all of the events so far this year,” Redican continued. “As well as encouraging others to support the events going on at JD with me, and not being afraid to have fun all together,” Redican said. In order to be an influence, people need to be inspired and influenced in their own ways. “Juan Diego has influenced me by pushing me to become better at everything I do whether it be athletics, academics, friendships, or my faith life,” Redican said. “I have countless opportunities to expand these areas and ultimately work towards becoming the best version of myself.” Senior John Flanagan is someone most people know because of his active involvement in the Juan Diego community. He is a student body officer, STAMP, and the Student Faith and Liturgy co-chair. Flanagan is a part of the National Honor Society, the N.E.S.T., peer ministry, Kairos, and plays for the boys high school soccer team. “He is very involved with the school, and is very kind person,” Junior Sienna Martinez-Huff said. “He is extremely welcoming to everyone and speaks about what he believes in without fault, and without being rude or disrespectful,” Martinez-Huff continued. “I would say I have a little impact in a lot of things in a lot of different areas of the school,” Flanagan said. “Student Government has already done a ton this year, with a lot more coming soon. In Student Faith and Liturgy, we have revamped the mass and made the committee more than just ‘mass planners’. The N.E.S.T. was reintroduced this year to try and boost excitement for all sports,” Flanagan continued. “This is all a collective effort and nothing can be credited to just me. In all of these activities, we all do our part in the best of our abilities which makes everything happen,” Flanagan said.

Pulling Up in The Whip The highlights of JD’s west car lot By: Sam Trujillo

Audi A5, 2018 “I think it speaks for itself.” - Junior Branden Beran

BMW 328i xdrive, 2014 “It’s red because I’m always flexing the Supreme.” - Junior Michael Durazo

22

Car culture is a growing phenomenon in 2019. From rappers to high schoolers, people love to flex their cars. Whether it’s expensive, custom, or rare, it’s easy to be impressed by these mechanical wonders. At JD, car culture is important, especially to the junior class. Although there are a ton of amazing cars in the lot, some standout. Junior Kaymin Sommer drives an new Audi S5 that garners plenty of looks. Junior Branden Beran drives a white Audi A5 with blacked out rims, and is often referred to as having the best car in the class. Junior Michael Durazo drives a red BMW 328i xdrive and even though he isn’t quick to show it off, it’s regarded as a very nice car. These are definitely some of the more expensive cars, and although a Volkswagen isn’t the same as a BMW or an Audi, junior Ellie Abundo has a sweet little convertible bug, and that isn’t too common, especially here at JD. Now that they have stopped producing Beetles, it will get even rarer to find this model of the car.

VW Beetle Convertible, 2007 “everytime I go over a bump I think I’m gonna die. 10/10” - Junior Ellie Abundo

Tiki Death Punch

by Jose S. Anaya Hailing from the classic Friends episode “The One with George Stephanopoulos”, Tiki Death Punch is

introduced by Monica to Rachel after a hard day at her first job. This recipe is a modified version of How

made with a wide variety of seafood ranging from squid

Farm to Market The farmer’s market still has much to offer

Story and photos by Madison Hanna As the seasons change, Wheeler Farm’s Sunday farmer’s market is coming to a close. Even so, there is still so much to buy. From fresh flowers, food and even unique crafts, it was a great experience visiting each booth, even on a rainy day. The vegetables and gourds were a colorful contrast in comparison to the gray and gloomy Sunday. I was grateful for Uinta Coffee’s delicious hot chai tea latte that kept me warm as I walked around. Though people usually imagine a warm summer day when they think of a trip to the farmer’s market, my experience proved that it is just as enjoyable in the fall.

28

As I walked around, one booth caught my eye with its unique, colorful sculptures on display. John, the owner of the booth and the artist, was happy to answer my questions about his business and how he made the decor and bracelets. When he was first inspired to create the items, John “bought a welder and tried not to burn” himself. He has been selling his creations at the farmer’s market for five years, and claims he doesn’t need a business name or card to sell them; his art sells itself. John makes braided bracelets by reusing scrap yard copper wire and welding it together. He also makes colorful bracelets out of water pipe from home improvement stores (pictured below). After cutting the pipes, John covers the bracelets with acid, such as vinegar or even mustard. This process creates the beautiful swirling designs on the surfaces of the bracelets. Blues, oranges, greens, and sometimes yellows appears on the bracelets, but John never knows which colors will appear. No two pieces of jewelry feature the same colors or designs. John really shows his artistic side though through the scorpion sculptures he creates from barbed wire. To make them, he heats up the wire so that he can mold it into any shape he desires. Then, after they are cooled, he paints them a variety of colors.

“I take a regular idea and make it different.”

I think this will be the only time in my life that I’ll consider a scorpion beautiful. Not only is it fascinating to look at, but the sculpture is useful too as it has a lantern hanging from its stinger to hold a candle or light. So, if you’re searching for a unique gift for someone or even a colorful creation for your home, talk to John on your lazy Sunday afternoon and you just might find what you’re looking for.

A New Style Popular 2019 Fashion Trends The return of the scrunchie, a trendy 80’s hair accessory, easily came back as one of the biggest fashion comebacks in what seems like decades. Bucket hats, mom jeans, neon colored everything, and even new trends like metal belts that include a variety of shapes are popular trends nowadays.

Bucket hats are certainly an accessory that is argued as to whether one can pull it off or not, but just like small funky sunglasses, they look cool. This in style trend comes in different patterns and bright colors which can spice up just about any outfit. Schoolboy Q, Mac Miller, and Tyler The Creator are a few of the rappers that have styled this trend. Bucket hats can be found just about anywhere, and is one of the chicest accessories for girls and guys.

Making friendship bracelets out of beads was definitely one of my favorite things to do with my best friends as a little girl, and the effortless yet simple craft that was once super trendy in elementary has definitely made a breakthrough. Bead bracelets can really range from just about anything. A neon green bracelet with your name on it? Yes. The name of your favorite Friends character? Absolutely. Some may not have the patience to diy these at home, but this cheap jewelry option can give everyone a sense of fun and take you down memory lane to the good ol elementary days.

The high waisted, light washed pants also known as ‘mom jeans’ are definitely one of the biggest trends that have made a comeback, next to scrunchies. Although low rise jeans were extremely popular in the 2000’s and will most likely pop up again later, the baggy yet voguish mom jeans are paired with a variety of shirts and are one of the most used styles now in 2019. This style was famous in the 90’s, but skinny jeans took over after the style lost its popularity. The loose fitted jeans are now one of the biggest comebacks ever in the fashion industry.
