I had a dream I was in a boat floating out into the ocean but I didn’t know where I was going. There was a girl in the boat with me and she seemed very scared. She layed in the bottom of the boat and didn’t move or say anything to me the entire dream. I kept looking up into the sky at the stars and the moon. I was hoping I would make it home and the stars would guide me there. ~Bella Bertagnolli

I had a dream that I was sent on a space mission to find life outside of earth. They had a planet set up where they believed there was life and my job was to build a good trusting relationship with this life. By the time I got there the only life were these little glowing balls that made whistling noises when you touched them. ~Sierra Bieling

I has a dream that I was in atlantis and it was actually quite fun. I was swimming with all the fish and seahorses. There were rimes in my dream I was a mermaid and other times I was a person. My mom ended up dating Brad Pitt as well which was pretty great. I was definately jealous. The dream was very weird but was a good one and was super funny. ~Isabella Roberts

I had a dream that I kept getting trapped in random objects. I ended up in a lightbulb but someone saved me and pulled me out of the glass. ~Misha Gupta

I had a dream about people that were close to me that have passed away but it wasn’t sad it was vibrant memories of them. They were honored and showed as their greatest selves they were all beautiful.

A Walk into Fire

Matt Burchett became a local hero by fighting the California wildfires

1

We all dream of being great by doing something amazing, and as soon as we hear about someone becoming a hero we feel inspired. Utah Chief Firefighter Matt Burchett inspired many Utahns to make a difference somehow by making the ultimate sacrifice by fighting fires in California. Juan Diego athletic director Chris Long taught Burchett at

3

6

2

Judge Memorial High School. “Matt was a pretty quiet kid, but had a wicked sense of humor.” Long had taught Burchett on many different occasions at Judge. “He was in my United States history class, American Literature class, and World Literature class. He was also part of a group of kids I took to the Teton Science School,” Mr Long said.

Firefighter Ray Mariani was also fighting fires in California with Burchett and had known him well. “I was trained by Matt Burchett.” Mariani said. He had known Burchett to dream of becoming a firefighter. “Matt Burchett had mentioned wanting to be a firefighter when he was 10. He always knew he wanted to help people in some way and he choose fighting fires.” Burchett had been saved by a firefighter and then is when he found out that he wanted to something to give back.

Cousin to Burchett was Juan Diego senior Hailey Hillard. “I mentioned to Matt how beautiful the valley was and the first thing he said was ‘yeah, but if there was a wildfire nearby it would take the house in an instant’,” Hilliard said, “He lived and breathed fighting fires.” Firefighter Burchett loved the outdoors, and even more keeping them beautiful and safe. “He has been more than a cousin to me, he is the reason I am pursuing being a firefighter after high school.”

4 5

Utah Fire departments sent out 11 more people and three fire crews on Friday November 9, without forgetting the sacrifice Burchett made earlier this year. They were gone for two weeks - missing Thanksgiving - all to try save homes and families in another California fire. Burchett has set an example to other firefighters, leaving behind an unforgettable legacy. Burchett will be known throughout Utah for being amazing and inspirational to many people, and now for saving many people from the california wildfires. People will continue to be inspired by his story and possible follow in his footsteps.

A Walk in the Woods Escape your stressful lives and take a hike in the beautiful scenes of Utah

Valley Regional Park

Valley Regional Park is a good option for people who do not get out much but are wanting to start. It’s a little bit away from school, but depending on where you’re coming from it’s not far at all. There is a playground there and quite a few walking trails as well as grassy areas to hang out. The majority of the path is paved but there are areas covered by trees you can walk through or you can walk on the grass

8

depending your preference. It is used for races so it’s a good location to trail as well if you are a runner or need to get better at running for your sport. All in all the Valley Regional Park is a good choice if you are looking for a quick and easy walk, or if you are wanting to get a intense workout. If you’re feeling adventurous you can play on the playground as well.

Red Rock Trail Head

Red Rock Trail Head is near the Draper Temple. It is medium-difficulty level, with a few hills but too many that it’s hard. There is a natural rock race with multiple rock climbing courses set up. The trail is mostly covered by trees giving good shade but there are sunny patches for those wanting to take in some Vitamin D. From the Red Rock Trail there are many different trails connected to it. There’s the Bonneville Shoreline Trail which goes through many states

and is a good option to hike a part of it at any distance you are comfortable with. It also leads to the Lexie and Ethan trail, a mountain biking trail dedicated to Corner Canyon students who passed away. From this trailhead as well you can get to the Potato Hill trail. If you are interested in hiking at all this trail is a must. It’s easy to get to and close to school. People of any skill level can hike it and it is absolutely beautiful.

Coffee at Sunset There’s nothing like a coffee before bed

Drinking coffee before bed will change your internal clock, thus keeping you up later while staying alert. Coffee is also proven to help you study more, by keeping you aware of what you are trying to learn. Sunset coffee shop is is common coffee shops for Juan Diego students to study and work on homework, especially during finals. Sunset is a coffee shop that is on just enough of a cliff that when your drinking your coffee you can watch the sunset and not buildings surrounding the shop. While I was there I had noticed there were more people sitting outside with a coffee

10

watching the sunset, rather than studying. People who came to study were sitting inside with headphones ignoring everyone around them, and not caring about the sunsetting and the feel of the interior. When someone first thinks of a coffee shop they think of a little place on the corner of a street downtown, the stereotypical idea, but Sunset wasn’t small and it was in a shopping mall in Sandy, Utah. Even though it was at a different location than most it still had the very important snobby coffee lover smell and feel that everyone tries to achieve.

The lighting was low and keep dim for the ‘later than it actually is’ feel that coffee shops love so much. The design of the coffee shop was modern and simple with the worn look and feel. It wasn’t distracting so it fit in well to complete the whole feel of the area.

isn’t your cup of tea, they have a good selection otherwise. They try and keep their drinks as aesthetic as possible with putting lavender in some to give it a pop of color, or for a tea drinking have a strawberry flavoring to give a pinkish tint to the drink.

So many people have a different idea of what coffee should be like - iced, hot, or not at all - and Sunset has a great variety for each and every person. For someone who is an iced coffee person they had a great selection to choose from. However if you are a hot coffee sort of person and he found the selection to be wide and have many options. Even if drinking coffee

Sunset was a charming coffee shop and is definitely a Utah go-to as a student. I was very impressed with Sunset and would recommend anyone to go to watch the spectacular sunsets with a seasonal drink.

How to Follow Your Dreams Here’s a quick self-help guide on how to follow a lifelong aspiration.

Imagine: you’re in that one class no one actually likes, and you start to daydream about your future. You see yourself at the top with your ideal life, but how did you get to this place? It’s not easy to follow your dream, so here are some guidelines on how to fulfill each and every one of your dreams.

Make sure what your dreaming can be realistically achieved. It’s not that easy for someone to become the first person to live on Mars, but if you wanted to become a scientist to help transform the soil or design the rockets to get there, then it would become infinitely easier.

Make sure your dreams are what you actually want to do with your life. If you’re trying to be a doctor, but your real aspiration is to become a lawyer, then you’ll be miserable; if you spend your time with patients you don’t even like when you’d rather be arguing with people, you won’t be happy.

With that being said, don’t limit yourself. Whether you’re going to Harvard or staying at home after high school, your future is determined only by you. The world is full of CEOs, inventors, athletes, and successful types, and among them there isn’t a single common denominator except hard work.

12

It’s most important to know that no one is going to be able to achieve your dreams for you. You need to put in all the work possible; there are no shortcuts. You will most likely fail the first time, and then use it to keep getting better. You’re going to have people that doubt you can do it, but it’s as important to prove them wrong. There will be nothing sweeter than to tell them you were right, that you were able to follow your wildest aspirations. Most importantly you will have to be okay with failure. Learning to take failure is extremely important, in fact it’s imperative. It’s not a wall, rather than a path to build off of. Success

doesn’t come easily, but it’s hard work and failure is going to be inevitable. There is hardly any success stories from the first try, a notable example is JK Rowling was rejected 12 times before Harry Potter was published. Rowling has been extremely successful, most recent and notable is by writing Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Following your dream is not going to be easy, but as long as you know what you want, be sure to be realistic, and work for it you will have everything you wanted to in life.

Liquid Zoo The Living Planet Aquarium in is the best place to see exotic animals. The aquarium has so many different types of animals, it is almost unreal. Some animals are the typical animals, like clownfish, starfish, andstingrays, but there are also many other special types of animals. Some of

14

these unique animals are leopards, giant spider crabs, and even an overhead shark tank. The Loveland Living Planet Aquarium in Sandy has all types of creatures one can only dream of seeing.

Your Worst Nightmare The scary thoughts that fill our minds as we sleep. Nightmares are commonly found among every person on the earth. Many of us have extremely similar nightmares, whether we know it or not. All of these nightmares represent different

feelings and events taking place within our conscious lives. Student artists Avery Dail and Beth Penderghast drew some of the most common nightmates we experience.

One type of common nightmare is being trapped, whether it be in some sort of cell or locked in a room. These types of dreams signify something important in out lives. For example, we may

feel helpless or trapped in our lives. It may indicate some sort of hardship that we are goinng through that we need out of.

One very common type of nightmare is being grabbed and not being able to move. You also may not be able to move or talk in real life. These sort of dreams happen in a state called sleep

paralysis. When sleep paralysis is experienced, the dreamer usually wakes up before the dream is over. This sleep paralysis will stop tour movement, speech and even breath.

18

One other common type of nightmare is the feeling that you are being followed or chased. These types of dreams occur when one trying to escape something in their conscious life. The person or thing chasing you represents certain feelings or events you are

trying to escape. Feelings of anxiety or nervousness commonly cause these types of dreams to occur, but they may also be caused by a feeling of vulnerability and stress.

One last common type of nightmare is seeing some sort of creepy figure in front of you. These creatures may be werewolves, mummies, demons, or just creepy figures in general. These nightmares are the ones you think of when you think of a typical

nightmare. Most times these dreams are very unsettling and unforgettable. They symbolize concern, like something that is lingering over you.

Uncanny By: Alyssa Rueckert “I had another weird dream last night,” Casey says, placing her lunch tray onto our secluded table. I roll my eyes, taking a bite of my sub-par turkey sandwich. “Casey,” I say between mouthfuls, “You have weird dreams every night. Monday night, it was that one about the talking snakes, before that you had to go to the hospital because your shoes were too small and you needed to get smaller feet, and last week you were golfing with Jeff Goldblum.” “No, no, not just golfing.” Evan interjects. “Minigolfing.” “Oh yeah, that’s right,” I chuckle. “Very fine distinction.” Casey glares at us. “No, that’s not what I mean. I mean…” She pauses, carefully searching for her words. That’s one thing I have to give her credit for. No matter how bizarre our discussion topics become, Casey is always deliberate. She always says exactly what she meant to say, nothing more, nothing less. “I mean this was something right out of the Uncanny Valley. Like, it almost made sense, it almost could have been real. But something was off.” “Aren’t all dreams kind of like that?” Evan eyes her through his thick-rimmed glasses. “Do you know what the Uncanny Valley is?” Evan doesn’t respond. “The Uncanny Valley is the term for the place in between normal and abnormal, where something is almost right, but is just slightly wrong. Most of the things that we find creepy fall somewhere in here, like zombies or aliens or dolls. They’re unnatural, so we can’t understand them.” “Are you into psychology? I couldn’t tell,” I joke. Casey blushes. Ever since seventh grade, she’s known that she loves psychology. Once she gets talking, it’s a miracle if she stops before she’s talked herself hoarse. “What I mean is, this wasn’t one of my average goofy dreams. This was creepy.” She looked at us expectantly. Evan shrugs. I nod to her, and she smiles. Whatever this dream was about, it’s already far more interesting than my sandwich. “Okay, so I’m walking down the street. Well, I guess it’s not really me. You know how in dreams, the perspective can be screwed up? Like, you can be someone, but somebody else at the same time? And, how things can happen to you, but you’re also watching the action in third person?” I nod, chewing. “Anyways, I’m walking. Everything is grey and dark and cold. And someone’s shouting at me, but there’s no one anywhere near. I can’t understand everything they’re saying, but they were trying to warn me. Something was wrong. I keep walking, and I hear something running behind me. When I turn around there’s nothing there, but the sound doesn’t stop. “At this point, I’m getting kind of freaked out, so I walk faster. But it doesn’t seem like I’m getting anywhere. I break into a jog, then a run, and then I’m full on sprinting. The

20

faster I try to go, the more it feels like something’s pushing me back. And I can still hear the thing that was behind me, only it’s not behind me anymore. It’s… it’s everywhere. It gets louder with every step I take. “All of the sudden, there’s this big flash of light and I go blind for a second. Then, when I can see again, there’s a girl standing next to me. For some reason, I think that she can help me. I ask her what’s going on, but it’s like she doesn’t hear me. I grab her face, looking directly into her eyes, but she’s looking past me. I’m desperate, and I’m screaming at her, ‘What do I do?’ She finally makes eye contact, and I yell, ‘How does it end?’ A single tear falls down her face.” Casey pauses, a distant look in her eyes. Evan sips his chocolate milk expectantly. I hold my breath. “And then my alarm goes off.” Evan’s eyes widen in disbelief. “You’ve got to be kidding me,” he says slowly. “That’s it?” Casey snorts. “What, like I chose for my alarm to cut it off?” She looks at me. “What do you think it means?” “It means you’ve been watching too much of ‘The Twilight Zone’ before bed,” says Evan. “Maybe you’re stressed?” I suggest. “Worried about the future?” I rest my head in one hand. “Either way, you’re right about one thing. Definitely different than the other dreams.” An uncomfortable silence settles over the table. I clear my throat. “On another note, I’ve got to stay after school and work on some homework in the library. Either of you care to join me?” I glance between the two of them. Frowning, Casey pushes around her mashed potatoes with her fork. “I’ve got work today. Sorry.” “Yeah,” Evan adds. “I’ve got rehearsals, and if I miss any more than I already have, Ms. Kelly is going to kill me.” I nod, trying to ignore the uneasy feeling deep inside of my gut. I’m not sure why, but that story unnerved me. A knot has settled at the pit of my stomach, and it’s going to take some work to unravel it. The first thing I notice when I leave the library is how dark the hallways are. The library is relatively well

lit compared to the rest of the school, but this is unusual. I glance out the window. A rainstorm. Perfect. It really is pathetic that I don’t have my driver’s license yet. Halfway through junior year and I’m still stuck walking home in the rain while most of the sophomore class has already been driving for months. I consider calling my mom for a ride home, but it could take upwards of half an hour before she can get out of work and up to the school. It’ll only take ten minutes to tough it up and trudge home through the rain. Gritting my teeth, I put in my earphones and press play on my 80’s playlist. “True Faith” blares into my ears. Good. I’m going to need as much synthpop as I can get for this walk home. Pushing the doors open, I’m attacked by a wall of rain and wind that nearly pushes me over. I regain my balance, turn my music up a few notches, and walk. It doesn’t take long for me to regret not calling my mom, but I’m already soaked and I’m too stubborn for my own good. What’s the point in walking out into this crap if I’m going to give up and go back inside right away? Crossing the street, I notice that there’s not a single car within eyesight. I glance at my phone. 5:47 pm. Okay, I guess that’s not too weird. Most kids have left school by now, so there shouldn’t be as many cars as there are at three. But really, no cars at all? Something about this feels off. The dark sky bathes the entire world in a pale grey tint. I try to push away my nerves, taking the rare opportunity of a completely empty street to sing along. “I feel so extraordinary,” I shout, dancing while I push through the storm. “Something’s got a hold on me. I’ve got this feeling I’m in motion, a sudden sense of liberty…” The song fills me with energy, and it becomes easier a little easier to move through the rain. I’m cut off as my music pauses and my phone vibrates. Call from Evan. That’s odd. He hates talking on the phone. I answer, only a little bitterly, and I’m greeted by static and the sound of wind. “Evan?” I shout into the phone. “Alex?” His voice cuts in and out, and I’m only getting fragments of his words. “Where-? -afraid-gone-!” “Evan, what’s going on? The reception is really bad, I can’t hear you” “Wrong-bad-something bad.” “What?” My brow furrows. “Dude, quit messing with me. Why are you calling?”

“I’m not-!” Static screams through the speaker. “Evan can you hear me?” I begin to wonder if he’s serious. “ Is everything okay?” “Oh God…” I hear him breathing on the other line. “They’re not human.” The call ends and my music begins playing again. I get that same nervous feeling that I got at lunch. Evan’s messing with me. He saw how freaked out I got at lunch, and he thinks he’s being funny. He’s got to be messing with me. “True Faith” fades out, and Phil Collins’s “In the Air Tonight” begins playing. The slightly ominous lyrics only make me more anxious. I begin walking again, faster than before. A quiet hum reaches my ears. I glance at my cell phone, checking if it’s a text or another phone call. It’s not. Wondering if it’s a problem with the music stream, I turn up the volume, but that only makes the noise quieter. Slowly, I pause the song, removing my earbuds. The noise gets louder, buzzing like a swarm of a thousand angry bees. It’s definitely coming from something out here. I replace my earbuds, turning up the music as loudly as I could without hurting my hearing, in an effort to drown out the noise. I look all around me, but I can’t see anything in this storm. It’s as dark as night, but the sun should still be out. Picking up the pace, I’m in a full jog. The wind is getting stronger and stronger, and I have to fight with my full strength to move at all. Whatever the hum is, it’s getting louder. My hair hangs limp, my soaked clothes stick to my body, and I’m freezing cold. There’s a flash, and lightning strikes the tree next to me. I scream, unable to see for a few seconds. That’s when I connect it to the dream. “I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh Lord…” I stop moving all at once, and the sheer force of the wind nearly knocks me over. I need to call Casey. The rain comes in sheets, stinging my eyes so badly that I can barely see. Blindly, I fumble with my phone, somehow managing to dial her number. My stomach drops further with every ring. After what feels like ages, she picks up the phone. “Casey!” I can barely breathe, my heart is pounding so hard. “Casey, it’s your dream. It’s happening. Everything that you said. I’m trapped. I don’t know what to do.” I can barely hear her on the other end. Between the pouring rain, the wind, the static coming through the phone, the electric hum, and the pounding of my own blood in my ears, her shouts have been rendered gibberish. “Please, Casey, please. Everything is so loud. Oh God, would the reception just work?” The hum grows louder still. It’s all around me, inside of my head. I feel it pounding at my skull, the pressure of the sound threatening to crush my entire body like a soda can. I begin to hyperventilate, tears streaming down my face. “Casey, please!” “Alex.” I hear sobbing. Whether it’s hers or my own, I can’t tell. Maybe it’s both. “Casey, please tell me how the dream ends!” “Alex. I’m sorry.” The call drops.

What Your Dreams Mean Interpretations of some common sleep thoughts. If you dream about abandonment. . .

When you dream about empty places it suggests that you have felt left in your life or as if you are alone. You may have some unresolved childhood memories. These dreams can also suggest that you miss your past self or you have left feelings in the past that you miss. This dream could also be a sign that you need to leave something in the past. In other words abandon a part of your life that is holding you back from being your best or limiting you to certain role in life.

If you dream about watching Netflix or another form of TV. . .

This could represent that you need to take control of a part of your life or you are taking control of a part of your life. This could represent a growth in self confidence or emotional maturity. Dreaming about TV shows could also be your brain’s processing or recapping of the day to understand it better.

If you dream about a rainstorm…

The sound of rain falling represents forgiveness and grace. The actual rain falling represents some form of pain or sadness in your life that you are letting go of or need to let go of. The feeling of the rain is a sign or renewal, growth, and rebirth. To dream of watching rain represents spiritual growth, personal growth, or new insight in your life. Thunder represents a release of anger or frustration. It could also represent that you need to pay more attention in your life and there is an important lesson for you to learn.

If you dream about a mall…

A mall symbolizes your choices and the options you have in your life. The choices you are dreaming about can manifest in the stores in the mall. These choices are going to shape who you are and who you are becoming. It could also symbolize that you are trying to please someone. You could be trying to keep up with current trends and be known as “cool.”

30

If you dream about keys…

Keys symbolize opportunities, access, control, secrets, freedom, knowledge or responsibilities. The key may symbolize that you are locking away your emotions and it’s time to let them out. It could symbolize finding a solution to your problem that has been locked up for a long period of time. A ring of keys could symbolise power and authority. A skeleton key references old emotions or memories that have been locked away. Dreaming about losing your keys symbolizes being afraid of losing what you have or control over your life.
