We are also thrilled to share the story of Caitlin and John Stamos, who grace our cover, telling their tale of love and sharing their spirit of giving back to the community through the eyes and lens of esteemed photographer Brian Bowen Smith, who provided the magical and iconic images.
We also share the story of our own local hometown hero JD Slajchert and what inspires and fuels his resolve to overcome adversities while bringing his strength, courage, and wisdom to others. We hope to inspire you with the story of Tisha Janigian, founder of She is Hope LA, and the amazing philanthropy of Seth and Joylin Haye, who support so many of our local nonprofit organizations.
As we move into the new year, one of our primary goals is to keep you, our readers, as healthy as possible, and we are proud to introduce Dr. Howard Liebeskind, a board-certified podiatric sports-medicine specialist in West Hills who provides nonsurgical orthopedic foot and ankle care to athletes at all levels—from recreational to professional.

I’ve seen lots of ads online for medications that prevent you from getting the flu. Are any of these a better option than getting the flu shot?
Getting a flu shot annually is the safest and most effective way to protect against the potentially severe influenza virus. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that any flu infection risks serious complications, hospitalization, or death, even in healthy individuals. While the vaccine does not offer 100% protection, it significantly reduces the likelihood of infection and lessens the severity of symptoms for those who still get sick. For communities, high vaccination rates establish “herd immunity,” protecting vulnerable groups like the elderly, infants, and those with weakened immune systems.

Conversely, over-the-counter (OTC) scam products are dangerous and unregulated. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns consumers against fraudulent products that claim to prevent, treat, or cure the flu. These products can be ineffective, contain incorrect or unsafe ingredients, and expose users to serious health risks. Some OTC medications also carry risks, such as decongestants that can increase blood pressure or multi-ingredient formulas that could lead to accidental overdoses. Consulting your pharmacist about over-the counter medications and products advertised online prevents dangerous drug interactions, ensures correct dosages, and confirms that a medication is appropriate for a specific health condition.

Shanesa and Nancy Fath, cofounders of Studio CT, representing Betsey Johnson’s o riginal paintings and drawings, hosted their first-ever gallery exhibition of Betsey Johnson’s artwork, on Oct. 11th at Studio CT in Whizin Market Square. The vibrant opening reception at the Agoura Hills location drew a massive crowd, with many attendees dressed in Betsey’s signature pop/punk/funky style. The show featured her original, personal art, moving beyond fashion sketches and into raw, joyful, and deeply intimate paintings and drawings. The exhibit, presented in partnership with 91302 Magazine, celebrated Betsey’s evolution from fashion icon to artist and storyteller. As cooler weather arrives, it’s the ideal time for Calabasas homeowners to prepare for the winter rains ahead. When the first heavy storms hit, unprotected slopes and poor drainage can lead to serious erosion, property damage, and costly repairs. At Vitoli Builders, we believe the best approach is preparation—not reaction.
Our team specializes in hillside construction, retaining walls, and custom drainage solutions. By addressing potential issues now, clients can safeguard their property before problems arise. Now is the perfect time to evaluate your terrain, stabilize the soil, and install solutions like retaining walls, swales, jute netting, or native ground cover.
Proper drainage is also essential. Water always finds its path, and without thoughtful grading, it can undermine even the
strongest foundations. We design systems that work with the natural slope of your property, guiding water away from structures while maintaining the beauty of the landscape.
At Vitoli, we’re not here to sell the most expensive fix—we’re here to find the smartest one. We pride ourselves on being a small-town company rooted right here in Calabasas, serving our neighbors with honesty, craftsmanship, and care.
If you notice pooling water, shifting soil, and bare slopes are early warning signs. Clients can reach out today and ask for Graham. They’d be glad to walk a property and discuss the best ways to prepare before the rain comes. Because when it does, preparation makes all the difference. 818.618.5141 866.575.5795 l

There’s something about the holidays that brings out the best in the 91302. Festive touches like twinkle lights, the comforting scent of pine, crackling fireplaces, and the sight of neighborhoods aglow with sparkle and cheer can be found around every corner. Few families channel the most wonderful time of the year better than Caitlin and John Stamos. Between John’s legendary Hollywood career, Caitlin’s goodwill, and their shared devotion to raising their son, Billy, the Stamos family radiates gratitude, contentment, and genuine warmth.
During this joyful stretch of the year, their household is a cozy scene with the movie Elf playing on the television, while classic tunes like those by Frank Sinatra and the Beach Boys echo gently throughout. Caitlin and John treasure hosting an annual Christmas party with their beloved families, friends, and neighbors to honor their favorite traditions and joys of the season. Caitlin supervises the festivities and prepares her delicious traditional cornflake wreaths while John places the finishing touches on a towering evergreen.
Each ornament on their tree tells a story and is a keepsake from a special moment, person, or place, creating a cherished collection they eagerly unwrap and delight in year after year. The decorations represent their childhoods, family, Billy’s birth, their love of Disneyland, and travel. Even though neither Caitlin nor John are particularly sporty, they have ornaments from the season that Caitlin was the
assistant coach of their son’s basketball team and when John played a coach on Big Shot for Disney+.
Other keepsakes remind the Stamoses of other milestones—like John’s time in the rhythm section of the Beach Boys and his journey to becoming an entertainment icon. John got his start on television as a troubled teen on General Hospital, followed by his role as the beloved heartthrob on Full House. While comedy made John a household name, he has proven that he can handle drama on shows like ER and Broadway. Next up, John’s joining the colorful cast of Apple TV+’s Palm Royale in its upcoming second season.
Acting is only part of John’s story. He is an accomplished musician, singer, author, and performer. Sharing the stage with the legendary Willie Nelson at the Hollywood Bowl last May was a milestone for the gifted entertainer. For decades, he’s been drumming and performing with the Beach Boys, most recently on their 2025 The Sounds of Summer tour. Showing that he never shies away from a fun challenge, John finally rocked Riot Fest after more than a decade of playful pursuit when the festival’s founder fulfilled his outrageously goofy list of demands.
“The world needs more music. I’ve been playing with the Beach Boys for 40 years, starting in 1985. Every year I have seen the world needs more optimism, positivity, ‘Wouldn’t it be nice,’ ‘Good vibrations,’ ‘Fun, f un, fun’...any way I can contribute to that is great,”
says John. “Without music, life would be a mistake. I wouldn’t know where I’d be without it. It shaped who I was and where I was going. I want to make sure other kids have that same opportunity.”
John shares openly how the arts transformed his young life when he started playing drums in an Orange County high school marching band. This year, John became a celebrity ambassador of the Adopt the Arts Foundation, bringing music education to public schools. Officially adopting LAUSD’s Rosewood Elementary with a “torch pass,” John provides them with a full-time music teacher and instruments for the year.
Whether it’s the arts, parenting, philanthropy, sobriety, acting, drumming, or writing, John continues to evolve without ever losing authenticity, crediting his beautiful wife, Caitlin, with motivating him to be better at everything. “She is the greatest mother on the planet. She is effortlessly graceful with everything: motherhood, her career, the house.”
Wanting to make a positive impact on the world emboldened Caitlin to create the podcast How Can I Help?, that connects nonprofits, businesses, and individuals who need assistance.

“The magic of the holidays isn’t about perfection or sparkle but about kindness, connection, and heart.”

Aligning with her belief that service is an opportunity that can be joyful and unifying, Caitlin started Civic Soul.
Over Thanksgiving and Christmas, the organization plans to partner with charities to help children, workers, and communities in need. Together, they will create immersive volunteer events that connect people and under-recognized causes not only with aid but with education.
This past year, Civic Soul supported Eaton Fire survivors in Caitlin’s hometown of Altadena and is returning with Habitat for Humanity to assist with building efforts after the holidays.
Helping people provides purpose for Caitlin. So does motherhood. With her roots strongly grounded in family, spirituality, and community, she finds joy in giving back and in the moments that remind her what truly matters. Every
night she and Billy recite a prayer that they wrote about their wish for themselves and others: “Lord, thank you for all our blessings; thank you for the roof over our head, the clothes on our back, the food on our plate, our health, the love of family and friends. We pray for all those going through hard times and especially those who are sick, in pain, and grieving. We hope that all find love, peace, and joy.”
As the Stamos family prepares for another season of creativity, memories, and what’s sure to be a touch of mischief, it’s clear that their greatest production isn’t found on a stage or screen, rather it’s in the love and laughter shared under their roof. Caitlin, Billy, and John remind us that the magic of the holidays isn’t about perfection or sparkle but about kindness, connection, and heart. Here in the 91302, that’s always worth celebrating. adoptthearts.org | civicsoul.org | howcanihelppod.com. l

For more than 70 years, Aldik Home has transformed its Van Nuys showroom into a breathtaking, elaborate winter wonderland during the Christmas season. Known as “The Christmas Store” to locals, Aldik Home showcases an immersive and jaw-dropping display of high-quality holiday décor and 50 fully decorated Christmas trees. Visitors can explore a vast array of ornaments, luxurious ribbons, shimmering lights, garlands, wreaths, and holiday figures, making it a beloved holiday tradition for many families.
A centerpiece of the experience is Aldik’s expansive, indoor artificial Christmas tree lot, featuring 60 trees in a wide range of styles and sizes. The store’s premium AH Gold Label Trees are touted as the best artificial trees available, featuring realistic designs, advanced lighting systems, and high-quality construction. The store’s commitment to quality sets its trees apart from those found at online retailers. Buying a tree online before seeing Aldik Home’s options would be a mistake.
Beyond the trees, customers can wander through the “light room,” glowing with thousands of LED lights, and lose themselves in the mirrored room, housing all the “infinity” lighted products and other fanciful delights. It takes two months each year to set up the entire store and create the magical, almost-theatrical experience, often described as “Disneyland for Christmas.”
In addition to the extensive and elaborate Christmas displays, Aldik Home boasts a wide variety of holiday ornaments, including a premium line of seamless, shatterproof ornaments made of plastic that are indistinguishable from glass. They are available in a wide range of colors and styles, from classic shiny balls to more complicated designs, and offer superior durability. I live, dream, and design in The Bubble. 91302. Where interior design is my art medium, and the everyday becomes an experience. Design is soulful. It’s the quiet precision of lines meeting in balance, the warmth of an unexpected spark of a painting that feels like a memory. It’s not just what we choose to place in a space, but how we choose to shape it. I build it, and I breathe it. Maybe indulgence isn’t about more, but about meaning. Taste, texture, and togetherness aren’t luxuries, they’re designed, built, and curated from blueprint to brushstroke.

Before we walk into the holidays, it’s worth pausing and taking a deep breath. 2025 has been one for the books. A year that tested. We’ve been asked to pivot, rebuild, and at times, start over entirely. But through every detour and hard-earned lesson, the truth stands clear: What doesn’t kill you really does make you stronger. Strength doesn’t always roar. Sometimes it whispers, “Keep going”.

Sometimes it shows up in a smile after loss, a rebuilt dream, or a small business that kept its light on through uncertainty. Gratitude doesn’t erase the hard parts—it gives them meaning. It reminds us that even in the mess, there is magic.
As we walk into the holidays, may we carry forward the lessons, the gratitude, and the quiet confidence that we can handle whatever comes next. Here’s to walking into 2026—wiser, braver, and grounded in the strength of everything it took to get here.

The Hidden Hills annual Fiesta took place October 18–19th. This year’s theme, “Woodstock Hidden Hills,” invited everyone to channel the free spirit of 1969, and tie-dye shirts, bell bottoms, peace signs, and groovy vibes abounded. The celebration began Saturday with a parade where residents dressed up, decorated floats, and let their creativity shine. This year’s grand marshal was Howie Mandel. Howie led the celebration with peace, good vibes, and neighborly friendship. Greg Garcia was the MC and entertained guests as floats passed by the community center. Saturday’s activities included kids’ arts and crafts; an

art show; a bake contest; the popular resident Chili Cook-off with, of course, the In-N-Out burger truck; and a festive carnival that made the evening come alive. Along with great rides, residents enjoyed Tavern 101’s delicious eats, a DJ, a dance floor, and fun for every generation. Sunday began with the ESC-sponsored pancake breakfast, where Bella Donna served her legendary pancakes. The grassy area had a petting zoo full of baby animals to play with, and local favorite Eastwood Ranch Foundation brought some of their beloved rescue animals. Residents then cruised into the evening car show followed by the adults-only wine exchange and Chef Marcus’s custom pizza pies.

Comedy, Creativity, Camaraderie Members and guests enjoyed a substantial number of events and activities this fall, including a special night of comedy with the club’s favorite comedian, Craig Shoemaker, who brought down the house. The club also hosted a great sip-and-painting class, where participants enjoyed the opportunity to express their creativity while enjoying exceptional wine and food.

The National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene’s performance of Fiddler on the Roof was presented in Yiddish at the Soraya Nazarian Center for the Performing Arts at CSUN. The exhibit “Through the Eyes of David Labkovski: Sholom Aleichem and His Heroes,” coincided with the performances of Fiddler on the Roof, which fused the beloved literature of Sholem Aleichem with the artwork of Litvak, Yiddish-speaking artist David Labkovski—offering a vivid lens into 500 years of Eastern European Jewish life. The exhibit included the painting “Tevye the Dairyman,” the inspiration for Fiddler on the Roof, which was on display for the first time in the United States. The exhibit is open through December 23rd. Curated by the David Labkovski Project davidlabkovskiproject.org

By JD Slajchert
I’m looking out into a sea of faces staring back at me—eyes tracking my every move. I feel the racing in my chest, the sweat building, breath accelerating—quicker and quicker— and I stop. I snap my eyes shut. I fall back to my preparation, my training, and all the years it’s taken to get here, now, to this moment. I want to open my eyes to look back out again, but I’m scared. I feel my nerves tighten. It’s an anxious, spinning feeling—as if my head’s stuck in a washing machine, twirling around and around and around. It’s then that, instead of looking out, I shoot my eyes to the floor, attempting once more to gather myself, and that’s when I see it. It’s the vision I’ve pictured for as long as I can remember. But this time, it’s real. It’s that famed red dot—the one I’m standing atop as my lifelong dream truly becomes a reality. I’m giving a TEDx talk.
Like all roads, my journey to get there was filled with unexpected twists, turns, losses, shocks, and sudden surprises. I lost my biggest fan, a young boy named Luc, to sickle cell disease. I went on to write a book about him and run a nonprofit with his parents in his honor. Last summer, our story was nominated for an Emmy Award.
And luckily, that night, I had the chance to watch an older gentleman named Rick Bernstein receive an award and give a speech that would forever shift my perspective. The most interesting part about this story is that it wasn’t what Rick said in his speech that had such a profound impact on me—it was what he chose not to say.

My family and I lost our Malibu home during the Woolsey Fire, and then, not long after that, we lost our beloved Malibu seaside eatery, Moonshadows, in the Palisades Fire. I’ve become a national ambassador for the American Red Cross, traveling beside my fellow “Red Cross-ers” to disaster zones and sharing my story. I’ve watched my college teammate Gabe Vincent go from being an undrafted hopeful to being an NBA star, now suiting up alongside LeBron James on a nightly basis for the Los Angeles Lakers. Yes, I’ve seen many highs and lows, yet, in the end, it all stays the same. Let me explain.
A few years ago, I traveled to Bakersfield to speak at a charity awards dinner honoring several of the charity’s outstanding members. It was a summer night, and I delivered motivational notes before dinner, speaking to a crowd of about a hundred inside a ballroom with white tablecloths. The event hosts were gracious enough to let me stick around to watch the winners receive their awards.
That night, Rick received the “New Volunteer of the Year” award for the unbelievable number of charitable hours he donated in his first 12 months of volunteering. In his acceptance speech, Rick spoke about the courage he’d witnessed in his fellow volunteers and how much hope he’d seen in his community. He concluded by admitting that it had been one of the greatest years in his nearly 80 years of life. But what Rick didn’t say—which I only learned once everyone had left—was that the same day he’d signed up to join the organization, deciding to donate all that time, energy, and love, was the same day he’d been diagnosed with stage-four cancer and was told he only had 12 more months to live.
Leaving Bakersfield that night, I remember thinking how brave Rick was for how much he’d accomplished while secretly battling cancer. And today, I remember

“Adversity is the thing that connects us all together because to go through adversity is to be human.”
an obsessive thought Rick inspired—which was that no matter the circumstances we face in life, we must remain unshakable and unfazed and continue to give back and do good work. That’s it. There’s nothing more important.
No matter what our stories are or what we’ve endured or had to fight and overcome, the answer—as Rick found out when he signed up to become a part of that charity—is always to give. We can always do a better job of giving our time, energy, attention, and hearts to those around us. And I’m here today to explain that because of the hardships I’ve gone through, I’ve learned how important it is to give.
As I steeled myself further, looking down at that red dot on the day of my TEDx talk, which was in Greenville, South Carolina, last month, I remembered Rick and all that he’d shared that hot summer night in Bakersfield years ago. I thought about what kind of man he’d want me to be on that stage and how much he’d want me to inspire that crowd, despite my nerves and anxieties. The idea for my talk was: Stand tall, own your story, and boldly share your ideas for the entire world to hear. And with the memory of Rick strongly at the forefront of my mind, I shared that idea worth spreading with the TEDx world. The unexpected. The colorful. The happy and the sad. But through it all, I reminded the audience to remain forever unfazed, no matter what life throws their way. I explained to them how important it is to take that moment, to stand tall, and then, to boldly step forward and give. And to you readers taking in this message, I encourage you to do the same, even if it means just starting with something small. And I promise that if you do, what happens next will blow you away. The sports medicine specialist who keeps the 91302 corridor—and the world’s elite athletes— on their feet
For more than four decades, sports podiatrist Dr. Howard F. Liebeskind has stood quietly behind some of the world’s most celebrated athletic triumphs.
From championship arenas in Los Angeles to the global stages of the World Cup, his work has kept athletes moving, balanced, and pain-free—the unsung foundation beneath moments of greatness.
Dr. Liebeskind’s journey began long before he wore a white coat. As a student athletic trainer in high school and college, he developed an early fascination with biomechanics and sport—like how the smallest mechanical inefficiency could cascade into injury or how the right adjustment could restore speed and power. That curiosity evolved into a lifelong calling: understanding how the foot, the body’s true foundation, drives performance.
After earning his undergraduate degree from Syracuse University and his doctorate from the Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, College of Podiatric Medicine, he completed residency training in Southern California—and made a choice that set him apart. While many foot and ankle specialists primarily focus on surgery, he committed to nonsurgical, biomechanics-based care rooted in prevention, precision, and performance optimization. Long before “sports science” became a buzzword, he was already pioneering it.
highest levels of world soccer, including at multiple FIFA World Cups and Olympic Games. He was part of the medical team supporting the iconic 1999 U.S. Women’s National Team, whose World Cup victory changed women’s sports forever.
International clubs from Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea F.C., Manchester United, and the Brazilian National Team have also sought Dr. Liebeskind’s expertise during North American tours and friendly competitions over his illustrious career.
What distinguishes Dr. Liebeskind is his belief that “performance begins from the ground up.” His advanced understanding of how footwear, orthotic design, and lower-extremity mechanics influence movement has shaped how athletes cut, pivot, and explode with confidence. His consulting work with footwear manufacturers, footwear providers, and orthotic laboratories has helped engineer designs that merge protection with performance, reducing injury risk while enhancing natural ability.
Beyond treating athletes, Dr. Liebeskind has devoted his career to advancing podiatric sports medicine— establishing it as a respected and essential subspecialty.
By the mid-1980s, word of Dr. Liebeskind’s results had spread through Los Angeles’s competitive sports community. Universities, professional teams, and athletes discovered that his methods didn’t just heal—they elevated performance.
Dr. Liebeskind’s early collaborations with Pepperdine University, UCLA, and the NBA helped pave the way for his extraordinary career that has included decades of combined service to the Los Angeles Lakers, the Los Angeles Galaxy, the U.S. Soccer Federation, and more than a dozen other collegiate and professional teams.
A founding member of the Los Angeles Galaxy medical team in 1996, Dr. Liebeskind has helped athletes compete at the
Beyond treating athletes, Dr. Liebeskind has devoted his career to advancing podiatric sports medicine—establishing it as a respected and essential subspecialty. Through teaching, lecturing, and leadership roles—including as subchair of the American Board of Podiatric Sports Medicine’s Certificate of Added Qualification Examination Committee—he has helped define standards for the next generation of sports medicine specialists.
From rehabilitative and regenerative clinical settings in the Los Angeles metropolitan area, he continues to care for elite professionals and active individuals alike, each seeking the same goal: longevity in motion. His “Circle of Trust” philosophy— emphasizing collaboration among physicians, trainers, physical therapists, rehabilitation centers, dieticians, strength coaches, and athletic shoe providers and manufacturers—embodies his belief that true performance comes from collective expertise.
Dr. Liebeskind’s legacy is measured not just in trophies and medals but in every stride, sprint, and leap made possible by his care. For countless athletes across the globe, he remains the quiet force beneath their success—“the foundation of champions.” l

On October 11th, Fran Drescher hosted her 10th Annual Health Summit—centered on “Empowering the Aging Woman”—with an in-depth conversation with special guest Jane Fonda. The one-day event, live in Los Angeles and streamed globally, was a major fundraiser for Drescher’s Cancer Schmancer Movement, a nonprofit dedicated to cancer prevention and early detection.
The summit’s agenda included discussions with leading medical experts on topics relevant to women’s health as they age. Tamsen Fadal, an Emmy-winning journalist, spoke on navigating menopause, while gastroenterologist Dr. Sabine Hazan addressed the connection between the microbiome, aging, and disease. Renowned psychologist Dr. Amanda Hanson also contributed, sharing insights as a “midlife muse.”
The highlight of the event was Drescher’s conversation with Fonda—two long-time activists discussing navigating the challenges of getting older in a youth-obsessed culture while maintaining health and vitality. Drawing on decades of activism and personal experience, Fonda shared her frequently quoted philosophy, “We are not meant to be perfect. We are meant to be whole.” This core idea emphasizes authenticity and personal growth over unrealistic expectations and societal pressures. The discussion also included the topic of “embracing the third act”—to help women see later life as an opportunity for continued growth and purpose.

For anyone who didn’t attend in person or missed the livestream, Cancer Schmancer is hosting the summit’s full video replay at no cost on CancerSchmancer.org, providing continued access to the expert knowledge shared.
The funds raised from the summit will support Cancer Schmancer’s various programs, including those which provide free mammograms and Pap smear tests to underserved women. The organization also employs patient navigators and other preventative health services to needy families to ensure healthcare access for all. The summit served as both an educational masterclass and a critical fundraiser, promoting the organization’s mission to shift focus from treating sickness to promoting wellness. The event was organized by Cancer Schmancer Executive Director Susan Holland and her team. For more information, visit cancerschmancer.org. l

Brenda Johnson vividly recalls the day she first opened the doors of Calabasas Pharmacy nearly 30 years ago. “I remember being so excited— and also a little bored,” she laughs. “We filled less than 10 prescriptions that first day. But I loved meeting new people, learning their names, and getting to know families. Some of those same families are still our patients today.”

That quiet opening marked the beginning of something far greater than Brenda ever imagined. Now, almost three decades later, Calabasas Pharmacy has become a valued cornerstone of the community—known not just for its professionalism and precision but for the warmth and personal care that Brenda and her team bring with every interaction.
Brenda’s path to becoming one of Calabasas’s most well-known and respected healthcare professionals began in the Midwest. After earning her pharmacy degree from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, she quickly climbed the ranks with Thrifty Drug, ultimately becoming a regional pharmacy manager. In 1996, she decided to take a leap of faith—leaving the corporate world to open an independent pharmacy in a then-growing corner of Calabasas.
From the start, Brenda focused on creating a place where patients felt seen, heard, and cared for. “I’ve watched children who were babies when we opened grow up and have families of their own,” she reflects. “Some patients have moved away but still ask us to mail their medications because they trust us. That’s the kind of loyalty you can only build through true relationships.”
Like many professions over the past 30 years, the world of pharmacy has undergone a dramatic transformation. What was once a product-driven industry focused on filling prescriptions has evolved into a patient-centered practice built around wellness education and disease prevention.
“Pharmacy used to be mostly about dispensing medication,” Brenda recalls. “Now, our focus is on helping people stay healthy and, ideally, keeping them off medications when possible.”

Brenda and her team play a hands-on role in guiding patients through medication management, supplement recommendations, and preventive health. She was one of the first pharmacists in the area to begin administering vaccines back in 1998—before chain pharmacies made it standard practice. Today, the pharmacy offers a wide range of immunizations, including flu and COVID-19 boosters. They also offer birth control consultations, urinary tract infection treatments, and travel-related medications and immunizations, such as for yellow fever.
“We’ve embraced the expanded scope of pharmacy practice,” Brenda explains. “We coordinate top-level care by offering services like medication-therapy management, and we can also prescribe certain medications and provide valuable clinical services that bridge the gaps between everyday life and periodic checkups with your doctor. We always work closely with physicians to ensure everything fits together safely and effectively. It’s vital to see the whole person, not just the prescription.”
Beyond the counter, Brenda’s influence extends into both education and professional advocacy. As an adjunct clinical professor for
the University of Southern California, Brenda mentors future pharmacists, teaching that expertise means little without empathy. She also serves as treasurer for the San Fernando Valley chapter of the California Pharmacists Association, advocating for independent pharmacies and patient-focused care.
Despite an impressive resume, Brenda takes the most pride in the trust she and her team earn everyday by providing thoughtful consideration to the Calabasas community—whether answering after-hours health questions or preparing custom pill packaging.
With three successful decades under her belt, Brenda looks toward the future with the same enthusiasm she felt on that very first day (and with many more prescriptions to fill nowadays), and the team at Calabasas Pharmacy remains committed to preserving the human connection that sets their establishment apart.
“Technology and medicine will keep changing,” Brenda predicts. “But sometimes the best medicine is simply a listening ear. Our personalized care will never go out of style.”

Nestled in the heart of Agoura Hills, Sumac L-STEM Elementary is a school like no other, where curiosity drives learning, culture connects communities, and innovation inspires every child. As Las Virgenes Unified School District’s Spanish/English dual-language immersion and STEM magnet program, Sumac stands at the intersection of global citizenship and hands-on exploration. Guided for nine years by Principal Liberty Logan, Sumac has grown into a thriving, future-focused community of learners. Logan shares, “At Sumac, the connection between our staff and families is the heartbeat of everything we do. Every teacher, staff member, and parent works together to nurture our community of learners. When home and school unite around curiosity, kindness, and high expectations, our students soar as confident, compassionate citizens of the world.”
Sumac’s L-STEM program—of language, science, technology, engineering, and math— blends bilingual education with project-based STEM learning. Students learn in a 50/50 dual-immersion model, with half instruction in English and half in Spanish, from transitional kindergarten through fifth grade. This approach cultivates bilingualism, biliteracy, and multicultural appreciation while strengthening critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The results create confident, globally minded learners who can problem solve, garden, design, debate, and dream in two languages. Recently recognized as a California Distinguished School, Sumac was honored for academic growth, equity-focused teaching, and a culture of connection, reflecting the dedication of staff, students, and families.
Each week, students roll up their sleeves for garden or STEM specialist lessons in Sumac’s outdoor classroom and hands-on lab spaces. Whether experimenting with soil, studying pollination, or exploring design challenges, students experience learning that feels alive and connected to the world around them. These experiences are possible thanks to the support of Sumac’s Parent Faculty Association (PFA). The PFA’s funding sustains the weekly garden program, STEM lab materials, and full-time STEM specialist, ensuring that every voyager has the tools to discover, create, and innovate.
At the heart of Sumac’s success is its sense of community, thriving on a vibrant partnership between teachers, parents, and students. Families describe Sumac as a place where “everyone knows your child” and where joy, creativity, and compassion guide each day. Dallas Lawrence, LVUSD board president, shares, “Sumac Elementary is more than a school. It’s a family. My own kids flourished there, and I’ll always be grateful for the amazing teachers and community that shaped their early years.” From cultural celebrations like Día de los Muertos, the annual Science Fair, and Cultural Diversity Day to student-led garden harvests, Sumac’s campus hums with energy, pride, and purpose. Dan Stepenosky, LVUSD superintendent, adds, “Sumac Elementary is a powerful example of what happens when

the community comes together with a shared vision. The duallanguage program thrives because of the partnership between dedicated educators and engaged families. Together, they’ve built a school that celebrates culture, connection, and excellence.” Sumac L-STEM Elementary is enrolling for the 2026–2027 school year in the 50/50 Spanish/English dual-language immersion program for grades TK–5. Families interested in giving their child bilingualism and a foundation in STEM are encouraged to schedule a tour at sumacelementary.org. l

The West Valley Warner Center (WVWC) Chamber of Commerce hosted its 19th Annual Food & Wine Festival at Jaguar-Land Rover in Woodland Hills on October 22nd. This year’s “Spooky Speakeasy” theme brought together great restaurants, wineries, food and dessert vendors, and local businesses to enjoy a festive evening of food, cocktails, laughs, and networking.
The WVWC Chamber of Commerce is one of the largest and most influential chambers in the San Fernando Valley with nearly 700 members who participate in community and business advocacy events throughout the year.

For more than two decades, Seth Haye has helped high-net-worth families grow and protect their wealth as managing director, financial advisor, and senior portfolio management director at Morgan Stanley’s The Oaks Group in Westlake Village. Known for his disciplined approach and steady leadership, Seth’s practice is built on integrity, diligence, and genuine care for his clients—values that extend naturally into his and his wife Jolyn’s philanthropic life. The couple consistently supports organizations that strengthen communities, empower youth, and offer hope to the vulnerable. Their ongoing partnership with Forever Found, a Ventura County-based nonprofit, exemplifies this purpose-driven approach.
Forever Found works to prevent, rescue, and restore children affected by human trafficking—a mission that has evolved over the past 15 years into a vital regional and global network focused on prevention education, advocacy, and survivor aftercare. In October, the organization celebrated its 15th anniversary gala at the Four Seasons Hotel Westlake Village, with Seth and Jolyn among its proud sponsors and recipients of a Pillar Award to commemorate their distinguished contribution to Forever Found’s dedication to the prevention and restoration of child trafficking survivors. Seth and Jolyn’s support reflects a shared conviction that prosperity carries a responsibility to uplift others and invest in lasting change.
Beyond their commitment to Forever Found, the Hayes are supporters of Sherwood Cares, a community foundation that directs its resources to a range of nonprofits aiming to improve the lives of children and families throughout Ventura County. For the past seven years, Seth has served on the Board of Regents at Pepperdine University, where he and Jolyn (both alumni) endowed a scholarship to support Christian student leaders with financial needs. The couple also funded The Haye Wine Garden at the university’s new chateau in Switzerland, where students can study abroad. Seth and Jolyn have also served as repeat dinner sponsors of the Boys & Girls Club of Conejo Valley Gala, helping programs that foster academic growth, healthy living, and leadership for the area’s youth.
Grounded in faith and gratitude, the Hayes view philanthropy not as an obligation, but as a calling—a way to align their success with service and ensure that their impact extends far beyond their own accomplishments. Through every act of generosity, they continue to prove that the greatest returns come not from wealth itself, but from investing in hope, compassion, and the promise of a better tomorrow. Ready to make New Year’s resolutions that stick? Find out how the words you use can make all the difference.
By Carla Ondrasik
Every January, I pull my “Magic Book” from the shelf, turn to the first blank page, and write. I reflect on the past year and inventory everything I’m grateful for. Then I list all the things I will have, be, and do in the new year. On my list for 2026: I will have more free time and less work in my schedule, I will be a confident speaker and share my “no try” message everywhere I can, and I will rescue two kittens!
This journaling tradition began in my early teens out of a desire to work out who and what I wanted to be. When I quickly discovered that whatever dreams I wrote down eventually came true, I gave the journal its mystical moniker. I became convinced that the mere act of writing down my aspirations on these spellbound pages conjured them into reality.
Of course, now that I’m older and wiser and have taken deep dives into the behavioral science that informs goal setting and achievement, I’ve discovered that realizing my dreams has little to do with magic and a lot to do with words
I never use words like “trying,” “wishing,” or “hoping.” Instead, I use words like “being,” “doing,” and “having.” Over the years, I banned a particularly detrimental three-letter word from my vocabulary entirely: try
The word “try” is so common in our daily lives. You’ve probably used it at least once today. Maybe you texted your friend, “I’ll try to be there at 9,” or you thought, “I’ll try to drop off the bag of donations today.”
But the word “try” is a sneaky part of language that stalls progress instead of keeping it going. In my book Stop Trying!, I describe it this way:
Trying satisfies a need to feel productive. But there’s no accomplishment nor tangible reward for trying. In reality, trying is an internal mental experience —it’s truly just a thinking
exercise whereby you are thinking, talking, and acting like you’re going to do. However, doing is an external physical experience—for example, calling the plumber, using the gym membership, or refraining from smoking. Trying is why we wonder to ourselves, “Why does it feel like I’m working so hard but I’m not getting anything done?”
When we try, we build into our intentions the possibility for failure. We put ourselves in second place at the starting gate. Think about it: Would you put your money into a bank that promises to “try and keep track of your money”? We don’t send our teenagers off on their first solo drive with: “Try to stop at the stop signs and try to drive carefully!”
Change happens when we take bold, determined steps; hold ourselves accountable; and don’t let excuses and blame step in the way of our goals and dreams.
This year, give yourself an edge in resolution-making by eliminating the word “try” from your vocabulary. Replace it with a steadfast “do” and watch all of those New Year’s resolutions manifest into reality.

When Tisha Janigian faced the uncertainty of starting over after her divorce, she discovered firsthand how broken the system is for single mothers. Unable to afford childcare, she couldn’t take a full-time job. Part-time work seemed like the answer, but with a bachelor’s degree, she was told she was “overqualified” and unlikely to stay. When she finally secured a few hours of work each week, her food stamp benefits dropped to almost nothing.
“I realized I would have made more staying home doing nothing—but I would never have built a career or future for my sons,” Janigian recalls. “So, I took a chance, and I began sharing my story. That’s what SHE IS HOPE LA encourages mothers to do, because people want to help, but often don’t know how.”

That experience became the foundation for SHE IS HOPE LA, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a clear mission: to break the cycle of instability by empowering single mothers and their children, guiding their journey from survival to enduring success.
The organization provides basic resources such as food, clothing, hygiene items, baby supplies, and furniture—often donated through home sales facilitated by its sister company, SHE IS HOPE Realty. Beyond essentials, it offers job training, financial and legal education, wellness programs, housing advocacy, and peer mentoring, equipping women to step into long-term independence with dignity and confidence.
What makes the mission uniquely sustainable is its direct tie to real estate with purpose. At SHE IS HOPE Realty, all agents donate a portion of their commission from each transaction to the nonprofit.
“Unlike traditional brokerages, every sale or purchase we complete becomes part of a much bigger story,” Janigian explains. “Our clients don’t just buy or sell property—they invest in hope and transformation for single mothers and their children.”
This model has already supported countless families—from wildfire survivors to women escaping domestic violence—yet the vision is even larger. SHE IS HOPE LA is seeking strategic partners and philanthropic investors to help scale its mission. Key needs include:
• An apartment building or hotel to rehabilitate, offering up to two years of housing for single mothers rebuilding credit and self-esteem
• Financial donations and grants (all taxdeductible) to expand capacity
• A headquarters space and a truck to handle donations and distribution
• Board members and volunteers to guide national—and eventually international—growth

Collaboration is also central to the mission. SHE IS HOPE LA partners with both nonprofit and for-profit organizations, multiplying its reach and impact. “I firmly believe that together we make a greater difference,” says Janigian.
“Our goal is to create a model of empowerment in Los Angeles and replicate it across the country,” she adds. “Single mothers are everywhere, and with the right partners, we can change the trajectory for them.”
For philanthropists, investors, and visionaries, supporting SHE IS HOPE LA is more than charity—it is a legacy investment in families, communities, and generational change.

LEFT/BELOW: Cary Grant shoots a scene with Carol Lombard along Triunfo Creek for In Name Only. ABOVE: Grant was also in Triunfo Canyon the previous year with Katharine Hepburn filming the comedy classic Bringing Up Baby. That’s a garden trowel he’s holding, not a knife. Whew!

For five decades starting in 1927, the historic Cornell township was a hotbed of moviemaking, hosting some 300 productions. One of Cornell’s busiest stars was Cary Grant, who shot six movies there.
As a rare big-name actor who worked independently and wasn’t part of the studio system, Grant shot Hot Saturday (1932) and The Last Outpost (1935) at Paramount Ranch; Bringing Up Baby (1938) and In Name Only (1939) for RKO along Triunfo Creek; Mr. Blandings Builds His Dreamhouse (1948) for RKO and People Will Talk (1951) for Fox at the 20th Century Fox Ranch. The house used for shooting exteriors for Mr. Blandings Builds His Dreamhouse remains standing today in Malibu Creek State Park—almost 80 years after filming.
This is just a small piece of the wonderful history found in nearby Cornell that is 115 years old in 2026.

If you’re thinking about renovating your outdoor space, you already know that the toughest challenges show up before construction even starts. You’re faced with endless options for pavers, stone, furniture, and layouts—yet it’s impossible to see how your choices might actually work together. This uncertainty can be overwhelming and, at times, almost paralyzing.
That’s exactly where traditional 2D blueprints fall short. While they outline structure, their abstract nature makes it hard to capture the true look and feel of a space. With 3D design, the vision becomes clear long before construction begins.
Now imagine taking all of your ideas, notes, and Pinterest boards and handing them to someone who can turn them into a clear roadmap. At Olympia, that’s exactly what they do with their concept designs. Every project begins with an immersive 3D rendering that brings your space to life, allowing them to fine-
tune layouts, materials, and furniture before any work begins. Instead of guessing with samples or hoping things fit, you can see how everything connects in advance.
Once the vision feels right, the concept design becomes the framework for a complete construction plan. Detailed engineering drawings give contractors the clarity they need to price and build accurately—while keeping your project organized and aligned. Construction always has moving parts, but a roadmap reduces surprises and ensures early decisions carry through to the finished space.
For homeowners, the biggest benefit is clarity. With a concept design guiding the way, choices stop feeling endless and start feeling intentional. It’s the difference between reacting to problems along the way and moving forward with a plan you can trust. Find out more at olympiadesignandbuild.com. l
