A Note From the Publishers

This is one of the best times of the year—as summer begins and our students celebrate the end of another school year. It is a time when families take off for a wonderful vacation getaway while others enjoy “staycations” in their own backyards with friends and loved ones. It is the time when we exchange the outer layers of our clothing—warm pants, jackets, and sweaters—for more revealing summer attire, baring more of ourselves to the outside world. It is no wonder that this is the season when everyone wants to put their best faces—and bodies—forward and look and feel spectacular. Our Beyond Beauty section features many great places to shape up for summer, discover new beauty and anti-aging treatments, and get our glam on for those summer parties and events. In this issue, we also shine a spotlight on venues that are havens for health, fitness, and total well-being.

Our heartfelt thanks goes out to renowned photographer Brian Bowen Smith who, once again, provided an iconic photo for this issue’s cover. We are also delighted to share our passion for Art and Soul, featuring the stories of three amazing local artists and image makers who are leaving their indelible impressions on the world. Be inspired by the beauty and grace of Laura Letchinger’s paintings and her Journey in Color, Consciousness, and Connection. Celebrate the work of JD Shultz, an artist known for his pulsating music-inspired motifs and custom art installations. And join us in honoring the story of documentary filmmaker Steven C. Barber, one of America’s most prolific commissioners of monuments of the past decade. We also invite you to celebrate the charity work of Caitlin Stamos and her nonprofit organization Civic Soul.

We also encourage you to celebrate Father’s Day at one of the great restaurants in our area as well as in our neighboring Malibu community. From the team at 91302 Magazine, we wish our dads a happy Father’s Day and hope you have a fabulous summer!

As we age, memory loss becomes a growing concern—but what many don’t realize is that certain medications may be quietly contributing to cognitive decline. A surprising number of commonly used drugs, particularly those taken for sleep, anxiety, allergies, pain, or bladder issues, can interfere with memory, focus, and thinking.

Of special concern are anticholinergic medications, which block acetylcholine—a brain chemical essential for learning and memory. These include over-the-counter antihistamines like diphenhydramine (Benadryl), medications for an overactive bladder, and some older antidepressants like amitriptyline. Other medications that may affect memory include sleep aids like zolpidem (Ambien), benzodiazepines such as lorazepam and diazepam, opioid painkillers, and muscle relaxants.

When used long-term or in combination, these drugs can significantly increase the risk of confusion, forgetfulness, and mental fog—especially in older adults. The good news is that safer alternatives may be available. The best approach is to review all medications with your doctor or pharmacist. Do not stop or change medications on your own; adjustments should always be done under professional guidance. A medication review can help protect cognitive health and ensure you’re taking the safest possible treatment for your needs.

Before You Pack: The Estate Planning Essentials Every Traveler Should Have

Whether you’re jetting off to Europe, heading to the mountains, or just planning a weekend by the beach, there’s one important item that often gets overlooked on the pre-vacation checklist: making sure your estate plan is up to date.

That little voice that asks, “What if something happens?” when you’re booking a flight or leaving your kids with a sitter—that’s your cue. Taking care of these legal details before you go isn’t about being fearful; it’s about being prepared, responsible, and giving yourself the freedom to fully enjoy your time away.

The must-haves

Just like sunscreen and phone chargers, some things are simply too important to forget. Before your next trip, take a moment to review the essential documents. It’s one of the smartest ways to protect yourself and the people you love.

Will or living trust

This is the foundation of any estate plan. Review it before you travel to make sure your assets will be handled the way you intend and by the people you trust.

Power of attorney

If something happens while you’re away, someone you trust should be able to access your accounts, pay bills, or handle an emergency. A durable power of attorney gives that person that authority.

Healthcare directives & HIPAA authorization

If you’re injured or hospitalized on your trip, who speaks for you? These documents make sure your medical wishes are clear and legally recognized, no matter where you are..

Temporary guardianship form

If you’re a parent traveling without your kids, this document legally allows someone to make decisions for them temporarily while you’re gone. It’s a small step for huge peace of mind.

Don’t forget your digital life

Make a secure list of key logins, passwords, and digital assets. If something happens, your loved ones shouldn’t be locked out of important information.

Quick check, big relief

Each trip is a perfect reminder to give your estate plan a quick review. Life changes fast, and a few minutes of planning can make a lifetime of difference. It’s the kind of peace of mind that lets you fully relax, knowing your loved ones are protected, wherever your travels take you. l

The elegance and precision synonymous with Rolex are reflected in the harmonious blend of colors, patterns, and materials that adorn the boutique’s fittings and furnishings. The façade, created from specially designed bricks, pays a visual tribute to the iconic Rolex fluted bezel and exudes sophistication. A striking emerald aqua wall beckons clients inside, inviting them to explore the history and heritage of Rolex. This wall features a wave motif, paying homage to the Oyster, the first waterproof wristwatch, while green accents throughout the boutique further reinforce the brand’s identity.

Custom light fixtures, inspired by the links of a Rolex bracelet, illuminate the watches displayed in showcases lined with beige leather and finished with bronze trim. The careful calibration of this lighting ensures that the timepieces are presented in their utmost glory.

About Rolex: An unrrivaled reputation for quality and expertise

Rolex is an integrated and independent Swiss watch manufacturer. Headquartered in Geneva, the brand is recognized the world over for its expertise and the quality of its products—symbols of excellence, elegance, and prestige. The movements of the Oyster Perpetual and Perpetual watches are certified by COSC then tested inhouse for precision, performance, and reliability. The Superlative Chronometer certification, symbolized by the green seal, confirms that each watch has successfully undergone tests conducted by Rolex in its own laboratories according to its own criteria. These are periodically validated by an independent external organization.

The word “Perpetual” is inscribed on every Rolex Oyster watch. But more than just a word on a dial, it is a philosophy that embodies the company’s vision and values. Hans Wilsdorf, the founder of the company, instilled a notion of perpetual excellence that drove the company forward. This led Rolex to pioneer the development of the wristwatch and numerous major watchmaking innovations, such as the Oyster, the first waterproof wristwatch, launched in 1926, and the Perpetual rotor self-winding mechanism, invented in 1931.

In the course of its history, Rolex has registered over 600 patents. At its four sites in Switzerland, the brand designs, develops, and produces most of its watch components. A fifth site, also in Switzerland, is under construction and is expected to open in 2029. Rolex carries out its own manufacturing operations, from casting the gold alloys to machining, crafting, assembling, and finishing the movement, case, dial, and bracelet.

Furthermore, the brand is actively involved in supporting the arts, culture, sports, exploration, and those who are devising solutions to preserve the planet.

Navigating the complexities of

MODERN FATHERHOOD

In years past, a father’s role was often straightforward—providing for the family and perhaps tossing a baseball with his son. When it came to daughters, the advice was often to “stay out of it.” It was a simpler time, with simpler expectations.

Today, the picture is much broader and more dynamic. Fathers are embracing a wider range of roles—at home, at work, and in their communities—and many are finding deeper ways to connect with their children. Reflecting this shift, 72% of large U.S. companies now offer some paid paternity leave, giving dads a valuable chance to bond with their newborns right from the start. There’s still room to grow with some companies providing longer leave for mothers, but progress is well underway.

With both parents working in many households, more fathers are stepping into the role of stay-at-home parent. Though moms still do the majority, more dads are confidently navigating baby-and-

me classes and playground visits, forging their own version of parenthood with pride.

Coparenting is also becoming more common, and while it brings unique challenges, it’s inspiring to see how many fathers are rising to the occasion—finding new ways to nurture, support, and stay connected with their children, even outside of a traditional family structure.

As society continues to evolve, so too does our understanding of masculinity. Many now embrace the idea that strength can be found in compassion and that being a great dad includes showing love, emotion, and vulnerability.

Of course, fatherhood still comes with plenty of decision-making— when to guide, when to hold back, and when to simply listen. But on this Father’s Day, as families across 91302 and beyond celebrate the dads in their lives, let’s recognize how far fatherhood has come—and how beautifully it continues to grow. l

The Gist (jĭst) n. 1. The central idea of some matter, such as an argument or a speech; essence. The Gist is 91302’s regular column to demystify conundrums, dissect everyday topics, and plumb what’s oft misunderstood.

Summer 2025 Style Trends

For men, summer ‘25 ushers in a return to refined leisurewear, where sophistication meets relaxed tailoring. The season’s standout is the tailored Bermuda short, offering a modern silhouette that transitions effortlessly from resort to cityscape. Complementing this are classic polo shirts in any color or pattern. Dark denim is a season standout, worn head to toe or worn as separates. Footwear is timeless, with supple leather loafers and nautical-inspired boat shoes anchoring the nautical look that is trending. Accessories are relevant more than ever for men, embracing quiet luxury. Retro sunglasses evoke vintage charm, while structured men’s totes redefine functional elegance. Together, these pieces speak to a summer style that is effortless, elevated, and undeniably cool. l

From The Inside Out

How nutrition shapes your glow

Beauty starts within—what you eat impacts your skin, hair, and nails just as much as any skincare product. Experts agree: Glowing skin begins on your plate. Enjoy these tips so you can eat well, live well, and glow naturally from the inside out.

The skin-food connection

Antioxidants from fruits and vegetables fight oxidative stress, while omega-3s in fatty fish and flaxseeds support skin elasticity. Staying hydrated with water-rich foods like cucumber and watermelon keeps skin plump and clear. The “gut-skin axis” also plays a role—balanced gut health can reduce acne and inflammation.

Glow-boosting superfoods

Top skin-loving foods include salmon, avocados, berries, and sweet potatoes. Packed with nutrients, these foods promote collagen production and even skin tone. Snack smart with avocado toast or a berry smoothie with almond milk.

Nutritional no-nos for skin

Sugar, alcohol, ultra-processed snacks, and sometimes dairy can increase inflammation and speed up collagen breakdown through a process called glycation.

The beauty supplement boom

Collagen powders and biotin pills may help, but results vary. Experts recommend prioritizing real foods over influencer-endorsed supplements.

Rituals for radiance

A balanced “beauty day” includes oatmeal with berries, salmon salad, and veggie stir-fry. Don’t forget to hydrate, sleep well, move often, and manage stress. l

Luminous Glow Beauty Tips for That

1

BEESWAX

Beeswax heals, protects, and hydrates skin and lips. It softens skin; aids acne, eczema, dryness, and stretch marks; and supports cell health with anti-inflammatory properties. By sealing in moisture, it keeps skin hydrated and soft while promoting healing and regeneration.

3

CREPEY SKIN

Crepey skin appears thin and wrinkled, similar to crepe paper, often on the forearms and upper chest. Prevent it by wearing sunblock and covering your skin. Treat it naturally with moisturizers, exfoliation, gentle soap, and a healthy diet. Retinoids, antioxidants, and AHA/BHA can also help improve its appearance.

5

OLIVE OIL

Olive oil is packed with antioxidants, including vitamins A and E, that protect skin from free radical damage, which breaks down collagen and elastin. These anti-aging antioxidants also act as a moisturizing treatment for all skin types, helping to heal damaged skin, reduce wrinkles, and improve texture.

2

GINGER WATER

Ginger water has been around for centuries in everything from medicine to cooking. It’s used as an aphrodisiac and yet also has beauty benefits. It is an excellent source in promoting hair growth. It burns fat, fights acne, and reduces cellulite. It is also known to increase collagen production and reduce skin damage.

4

ALOE VERA

Aloe not only soothes sunburned skin but also nourishes deeper layers for clearer skin over time. Rich in vitamins, it hydrates, reduces inflammation, and relieves itchiness and irritation. Aloe helps with acne and eczema while providing a cooling sensation, making it a beneficial skincare ingredient full of vitamins and minerals.

6

HYDRATION

Hydration directly impacts the metabolism. Dehydration can slow metabolism, reducing efficiency. To boost a sluggish metabolism, hydrate with water. When dehydrated, the body struggles to use fat for fuel. Drinking two to three liters of water daily helps maintain proper hydration and supports metabolic function.

Before starting any new health-related treatment or supplement, please consult your doctor.

Rewriting the rules of fitness and self-care

Celé Wellness

Co-founders Amber Niswander, Emily Trowbridge, and Tara Selleck shared a vision—to create a space totally dedicated to women’s wellness, where clients could embrace a holistic approach to health that focused on physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing, all under one roof. This vision was transformed into a reality when they opened Celé Wellness in Westlake Village—a place where women of all ages can take a proactive approach to self-care and fitness to empower body, mind, and spirit.

A fitness mecca

Fitness lies at the core of Celé Wellness. Women can reconnect with their bodies, cultivate inner peace, and discover their inherent resilience. The gym incorporates state-of-the-art equipment, including the cutting-edge Reax line, designed to strengthen the mind-body connection. Cardio equipment includes Peloton bikes, Precor treadmills, stair climbers, rowing machines, and ARC trainers. The gym also hosts a strength-training area with free weights and various Precor strength machines to meet all clients’ goals. Personal and small group training is available, led by a team of expert personal trainers.

Three fitness studios offer over 100 group fitness classes per week. Members choose from a myriad of classes, including signature workouts: “The Pump,” centered on strength training; “Bounce,” with personal trampolines/rebounders; and “The Blend,” a fusion of all Celé’s signature classes. For those that love barre, the Barre La Femme class provides a full-body workout that combines elements of ballet, Pilates, and yoga to target small muscle groups and improve flexibility, strength, and balance. Yoga lovers can enjoy nine different types of yoga classes—from gentle mindful vinyasa that enhances strength and balance to immersive and empowering “Wild Woman Yoga,” offered in both the main and hot studios. Classic Pilates lovers will also enjoy group or individual Reformer Pilates sessions designed to improve flexibility, joint mobility, toning, and posture. Classes also include hot yoga, hot mat Pilates, and hot barre in their dedicated hot studio to help clients release even more toxins and increase flexibility, all in the comfort of a heated studio.

Spa offerings

The blissful day spa caters to both members and non-members alike. Spa guests can indulge in a revitalizing CELÉstial massage that alleviates tension and promotes relaxation or enjoy enhanced massages that include deep-tissue massage, cupping, hot stone massage, and Gua Sha, which is a traditional Chinese medicine technique that involves using a smooth-edged tool to scrape the skin. The Gua Sha practice is believed to improve circulation, release muscle tension, and promote healing by stimulating blood flow and activating the body’s natural healing processes. It’s often used on the back, neck, shoulders, and face. This luxurious day spa also offers signature facials, transformative body treatments, and a tranquil Vichy shower wet room for a truly indulgent experience.

Whole-body wellness

Clients rejuvenate the body and mind at Celé Wellness with the diverse recovery offerings. They can unwind in the traditional sauna or experience the targeted benefits of the infrared sauna. Senses are invigorated with a refreshing cold plunge, or clients can combine the best of both worlds in their 50-minute Nordic Contrast Plunge. Women can also benefit from red light therapy to enhance skin health and boost collagen. Recovery is further supported with lymphatic rollers, and clients learn the art of contrast therapy in the energizing Nordic therapy classes. Clients find inner peace and serenity in the designated meditation room.

A heavenly sanctuary and community

Inspired by the concept of “celestial,” the founders of Celé have taken “wellness” to its highest level—a place where women can nurture their mental and emotional wellbeing in addition to their physical goals. Celé Wellness promotes community through educational events and workshops on nutrition, sound baths, and pop-up events about everything from ear seeding and traditional Chinese medicine to pelvic floor physical therapy and more. Members can also take advantage of two designated communal workspaces to plug in and work. With all its offerings, it’s no wonder Celé members feel welcomed, inspired, and empowered in this supportive wellness sanctuary. They’d love to have everyone join their Celé community. The Art and Science of Breast Revision

Plastic surgeon Andrew Cohen, MD, FACS, performs a variety of different breast procedures to help patients maximize their size, shape, and contours or to help with reductions. Whether it is a reduction for health reasons or changing out breast implants, Dr. Cohen is the go-to surgeon for all breast revisions. For many patients, breast revision can be a life-changing procedure. It can enhance the volume and improve the shape and symmetry of the breasts, all while drastically improving their aesthetic look. For patients of all ages, this can create a profound change in confidence and a physical health improvement.

Dr. Cohen has performed thousands of breast surgeries in his 24 years of practice, with beautiful results. Breast reductions for health reasons are the most commonly requested surgery in younger patients who are in their teens or 20s. Sometimes, overly large breasts can be inconvenient or even painful, depending on body type. Women with oversized breasts often feel restricted in their activities due to discomfort. Others have difficulty finding clothing that fits them properly. In addition,

oversized breasts can sometimes lead to skin irritation or pain in the back, shoulders, or neck. With breast reduction, Dr. Andrew Cohen can remove excess volume and create a beautiful, more proportionate shape.

Patients who have had breast implants for a while may want them exchanged or removed. When doing a breast revision with new implants or just removing breast implants and reshaping, Dr. Cohen utilizes an internal scaffold—creating an “internal bra”—which helps the revision keep shape over time. Occasionally, fat grafting is used to help increase volume.

Dr. Cohen creates a personalized plan for each patient—a pre-operative plan and a post-operative scar management plan. With the use of special sutures and a Sylke, post-surgical dressing, he aims to create the best surgical results with the most minimal scar outcome. While keeping both tasks in mind during and after surgery, Dr. Cohen can obtain optimal results. 5400 Balboa Ave., #217, Encino | 310.659.8771 AndrewCohenMD.com | @andrewcohenmd

Offering more than beauty treatments, it transports visitors to a glamorous escape that is a combination of French elegance and Hollywood sophistication.

Clients are offered a glass of champagne or a cup of strawberry rosebud tea, carefully served on a rolling tray with sweet French pastries, a unique touch that combines relaxation with beauty. Celebrity makeup artist Heather Lucas and her daughter, Madeleine, highlight the “French way,” which prioritizes one’s natural features and the beauty of the skin while using the finest products for the cleanest, most beautiful results.

Heather started Let’s Make Up on a whim after discovering her friend’s beloved salon was closing down. Inspired by the conversation, she and her daughter envisioned a space where they could work together providing glam for the everyday girl. Over the years, the mother-daughter team worked side by side at various salons and on location in bridal and beauty hairstyling and makeup artistry. This new venture combines their shared passion and talent. Heather’s fiancé, Pete, collaborated on the project to bring the salon’s design to life, including a refurbished vintage Moët & Chandon Champagne Rosé vending machine.

At the heart of Let’s Make Up is the commitment to creating elevated, soft looks with a focus on natural beauty. Their makeup artistry is about enhancing a person’s features using conservative, clean makeup, then adding a touch of glam. They use only premium products such as Tom Ford, Chanel, YSL, Valentino, Chantecaille, and Inglot, along with techniques learned at Cinema Makeup School, to create a flawless, high definition, no-filterneeded finish. Their personalized makeup application ensures every client looks and feels their best with softness and radiance. Lashes are always included, and clients can purchase a customized Inglot Freedom System Flexi Palette to recreate the look at home.

The salon’s dedication to quality extends to its hair services as well. Their offerings include everything from precision cuts to premium color services, including a variety of hair extension applications, including the newest method called V-Light. Let’s Make Up uses luxury brands like Balmain Hair Couture, the only highfashion house with a dedicated haircare and styling line, along with Davines, a natural, eco-conscious brand; Milbon premium Japanese haircare; Babe hair extensions; HaloCouture hair extensions; Brazilian Blowout; and Cezanne gentle keratin treatments.

A 12-Year Evolution of Art as Inner Dialogue and Outer Hope

LAURA LETCHINGER

A JOURNEY IN COLOR, CONSCIOUSNESS, AND CONNECTION

When you step into Laura Letchinger’s world, whether through the doors of her Woodland Hills studio or into the layered expanses of her abstract paintings, you’re greeted not only by color and form, but by something more ethereal: a feeling. It’s as if her art is already in conversation with you, even before a single word is spoken.

For Laura, painting isn’t simply a creative outlet; it’s a way of being, a meditative practice rooted in presence. Her process is intuitive, a surrender to the moment through a partnership with universal creative energy. In this way, her work becomes a living canvas for all to experience: an abstract landscape of feeling, transformation, and hope. “It involves a type of synergy that puts a person in a flow state towards something helpful, uplifting, or healing being realized in the physical world,” says Laura. “So, with the very first mark, there’s a curiosity and optimism that I’m resonating with. There can be obstacles, for sure, but as with all things, they, at some point, pass. And just like with this fascinating type of collaboration in the studio, incredible things can happen as a collective society when we are open to engaging in a supportive, creative dynamic that’s bigger than our own egos.”

Although engaged in community and highly valuing her time with family and friends, it’s the more solitary experiences, both in nature and in the city, that energize this artist and influence her mark making, experiences that echo back to a pivotal chance discovery and

exploration of her grandparents’ attic, alone as a small child. “I found piles of blank paper and unused, sharpened pencils up in that newly discovered space,” says Laura. “For whatever reason, I loved everything about drawing a first long mark across the emptiness of the paper. Still do.”

Laura relishes her visits to Malibu Creek State Park and other protected areas where open skies and rustling leaves serve as both muse and meditation. These moments—free from noise and full of presence—are when Laura feels most herself. “I have a lot of gratitude,” shares Laura, “for the restorative properties of wild, natural spaces. I find a lot of inspiration and joy there that’s then brought back to the studio.”

Raised just outside of Chicago during the ’70s and early ’80s, Laura grew up amid the stillness and freedom of nature in the Midwest and spent a lot of time drawing. She studied pre-med and psychology in school, seeking to understand the inner workings of human experience. In the rhythm of Wicker Park during the 1990s, where she lived, biked, and distance ran, graffiti—raw, colorful, rebellious—spoke to her. It wove itself into the poetry she was writing at the time, and over the years, that energy found new form in her abstract visual language. Painting, as Laura discovered, offered the perfect alchemy for her introspective nature: a place to dive inward, connect with her source, and manifest something tangible, emotional, and alive.

Laura’s studio is a sanctuary of openness, experimentation, and soulful exploration. Within it, Laura uses a variety of mediums—from oils, acrylics, and drawing tools to unconventional materials— allowing herself to respond spontaneously to energy. Her works—layered, organic, and often large in scale— are a visceral outpouring of what she calls “energized calm with inspired momentum.” It’s a paradox that only makes sense when you stand in front of one of her paintings and feel that wave moving through you too.

“I paint because it’s the best way for me to connect with the universal creative energy that’s in and around all of us,” Laura says. “When we click into it—through our passions, our roles in family or community, or even just a walk alone—it’s like riding a kind, supportive wave.”

In 1996, Laura moved to Los Angeles with her husband and later became a mother. Life changed. And while art lingered as a quiet whisper, it wasn’t until 2013, while sitting in school pick-up lines, watercolor pad in hand, that she began to listen to it fully. Those early works were small, portable, and personal, but they marked the beginning of a creative journey that would soon stretch across continents, galleries, and public

spaces. What started in the front seat of her car turned into a full-fledged practice that today connects Laura with public art organizations, designers, art consultants, and art collectors around the world.

Nowhere is Laura’s philosophy more beautifully embodied than in her ongoing collaboration with the South L.A.-based nonprofit Piece by Piece. The organization introduces individuals who have experienced homelessness or economic insecurity to the world of mosaic art, enabling them to build confidence, earn supplementary income, promote wellness, and enjoy an improved quality of life. Drawn to the powerful mission of Piece by Piece and its community spirit, Laura invited the group to participate in her 2018 solo exhibition, “Connection.” Individual artisans earned income through collector purchases, and Piece by Piece as a group recreated Laura’s large painting “Fly” in mosaic for the show. This spectacular interpretation was acquired and is now a focal point in the lobby of 200 West Ocean, a luxury residence building in Long Beach. A sparkling large-scale mosaic installation solely designed and created by Piece by Piece also adorns an expansive wall by the building’s exterior swimming pool. Large

mosaic murals by Piece by Piece can be seen in many places throughout Los Angeles; the hope is that the unique custom mosaic creations, both large and small, continue to be requested by private and corporate collectors to support the vital mission of Piece by Piece.

Collaborative work with Piece by Piece also marries Laura’s sweeping painted brush strokes with intricate mosaics of reclaimed glass; the results are stunning, reflecting not only a merging of techniques but a merging of voices—Laura’s intuitive abstraction with the tactile, hands-on beauty created by Piece by Piece artists. For Laura, these collaborations are an extension of her belief in art as a healing practice, one that supports reconnection to self, to others, to possibility. Piece by Piece has radiated this shared belief to the larger community. In the aftermath of the L.A. wildfires, it is collaborating with affected families to transform salvaged materials into artwork that symbolizes resilience, and it is turning loss into a powerful expression of remembrance, strength, and hope.

When viewers engage with Laura’s paintings, they’re not just viewing them—they’re entering into a kind of shared consciousness. It reminds us that we are all co-creators on this journey, each with our own brush to hold, each with a canvas waiting to be lived on. Laura’s paintings are a mirror and a map—for those seeking beauty, not just in aesthetics but in soul; for those learning to trust their inner voice, even when it trembles; and for those remembering how to be tender with themselves—because at the heart of Laura Letchinger’s art is a simple, generous truth: The sun is shining for all of us. l

JD Shultz A colorful life

JD Shultz was destined to be an artist. Born and raised in L.A., Joshua Dimitri Shultz grew up immersed in a world where creativity and artistic expression colored his life. Surrounded by a family of prolific artists, his mother, Carole Shultz, was a gifted sculptor and painter, and his father, Jack Shultz, was a salesman who became a renowned mixed media painter at the age of 40. Both parents set the tone for a household where art was not a hobby; it was the heartbeat.

Jack and Carole took a leap of faith when JD was 3 years old. At only 29 with three kids and living by the La Brea Tar Pits, Jack quit his job as a social worker. Carole was an amazing “spiritual cosmic human being” who turned their living room into a studio where they made their first sculptures and sold them at a weekend parking lot art show off the corner of Melrose Avenue and La Cienega Boulevard.

In the 1970s, Jack and Carole started fabricating replications of Carole’s sculptures to sell in a circuit of malls and shows throughout Southern California—from the Beverly Hills Affaire in the Gardens events to Valley Art Shows in Encino. The list of iconic celebrities they sold to includes Steven Spielberg, Ron Howard, Hugh Hefner, Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, Sylvester Stallone, Henry Winkler, and Smokey Robinson. In the 1980s, without any previous artistic ability, his father began painting on the back of glass. On weekends, he rented a parking lot on Admiralty Way in Marina Del Rey where he sold his art, becoming successful after he started offering payment plans to young collectors.

is deeply connected to his roots. Woodland Hills is the location of the expansive artist’s compound he lives in with his partner and their two children. The compound is surrounded by buildings covered in vibrant murals and includes a recording studio, a “zen den” meditation room, a small art factory, and several calming outdoor sitting areas.

JD’s art is a reflection of a life that aligns passion with work. He describes himself as “hyper driven,” and that is an essential part of what makes his work so visually dynamic. One of his unique methods of expression is using acrylic to paint on many different substrates: plexiglas, canvas, metal, and wood. JD’s work ranges from bold abstracts to reflections of rock stars, athletes, celebrities, cityscapes, and naturescapes conveyed using elements of street art, surrealist pop, and rhythmic design. His style appears to be inspired by Picasso, Pollack, Basquiat, and Warhol, but his true muses are his parents and family.

His style appears to be inspired by Picasso, Pollack, Basquiat, and Warhol, but his true muses are his parents and family.

Hanging on walls around the world, JD’s pieces are recognizable for their colorful boldness and energy. They have caught the eyes of not only everyday collectors but also an impressive list of celebrities and corporate patrons. Gal Gadot, Ryan Seacrest, Larry King, Ric Ocasek, and Barry Manilow all own pieces of JD’s collection, as did Kobe Bryant. Corporations like MGM Resorts International, Guitar Center, and the Four Seasons have installed JD’s signature works in their spaces.

JD and his siblings, Adam and Rachel, grew up surrounded by this creativity. Since JD turned 18, he’s been a fixture on the Los Angeles art and music scenes and is proud that he’s never had nor needed another job. To this day, decades after the death of his parents, he

Locally, JD’s art can be found on the walls of CenterStaging Studios in Burbank and Carriere Menswear and Kirk Jewelers in Westlake Village. In 2011, JD became the only artist ever to be commissioned to decorate the RockWalk Museum at the world-famous Guitar Center on Sunset Boulevard. A few years ago, JD returned to

the Hollywood landmark to hang an installation of his music paintings in the RockWalk Museum. This was in addition to the many works he already has throughout the store and leading down to the Vintage Room. One of the greatest honors JD’s had was being invited to create a mural on the boardroom ceiling at Kobe Bryant and Jeff Stibel’s venture capital firm in Malibu.

While his client list is star studded, JD’s compass is moved by a desire to create art that connects people. That spirit extends beyond the canvas as he is also a philanthropist. His art has raised close to $200,000 for organizations including the Grammy’s/MusiCares Foundation, the City of Hope, the American Heart Association, Barbra Streisand’s Women’s Heart Disease Foundation, and dozens more. JD regularly donates original works for auction at events, supporting causes as diverse as environmental sustainability, education, public health, music, and the arts.

JD’s creative life isn’t limited to visual arts. A self-taught multi-instrumentalist, producer, engineer, and songwriter, he records under the name Human Brother and plays every instrument on his latest release, Spirit Animal, created in his home studio. JD was even inducted into

the hall of fame of his alma mater, Fairfax High School, joining the ranks of alumni such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Slash from Guns N’ Roses. The honor was part of the school’s centennial celebration and reflects JD’s status as a proud son of L.A.

In addition to working with private collectors, these days, JD works closely with interior designers, real estate investment groups, hotels, and staging companies to curate collections of his paintings for entire properties, offering buyers the opportunity to purchase fully decorated spaces where his art is the backbone of the design. Perhaps what’s most remarkable about JD is his unwavering dedication to his craft in so many forms— from creating and selling art to decorating homes, offices, and professional studios. He’s also ready to share his family’s story and sits at the helm of a documentary that details his artistic legacy, the same legacy that shaped the colorful life of a young boy fueled by an artistic passion that filled his childhood home—a place where creativity was destiny. l

STEVEN C. BARBER MONUMENT MAKER

Three-time Oscar-shortlisted documentary filmmaker Steven C. Barber has been documenting the American exceptionalism of our United States military for almost two decades, from our World War II veterans to our active service personnel. His latest film, The World’s Most Dangerous Paper Route, viewable on Peacock and Amazon Prime, is his masterpiece—as a combat reporter and featuring a tour of Afghanistan. The film follows the exploits of the men and women of the Stars and Stripes military newspaper, which brings the stories of the world and America to our troops down range in harm’s way.

Barber has made nine documentaries through his production company Vanilla Fire Productions and has sold his films to Netflix, Hulu, Peacock, and several other streaming platforms. Over the last decade, Barber has also broadened his scope to celebrate American exceptionalism by becoming one of America’s most prolific monument commissioners. He has commissioned the monument of the Apollo 11 crew, celebrating the greatest story in the history of mankind. He worked with the second man on the moon, Buzz Aldrin, at the Kennedy Space Center. He also commissioned the Apollo 13

monument, celebrating the greatest successful failure of mankind, working with Captain Jim Lovell, commander of Apollo 13, at the Houston spaceflight center.

Most recently, Barber unveiled the Sally Ride Monument, featuring the first American woman in space at the Reagan Presidential Library. And this last Veterans Day, Barber unveiled the first military monument in the history of any Fortune 500 company for Lowes home-improvement corporation. It features a male veteran and active female service officer, together in one monument.

“The opportunity to vision and build these monuments is beyond any dream I ever came up with,” says Barber. “And yet somehow, I was tasked to dream of these incredible monuments and get them built.” Barber attributes the monument epiphany to hard work, to getting

up every morning and swinging the bat, as well as to overcoming things, improvising, and most of all adapting—since this epiphany came to him on a mountain bike ride at a time when the documentary film world was losing momentum for him. “I had lost the ability to find funding for my films,” explains Barber. “So, on this bike ride, I literally had to reinvent myself, and this Field of Dreams moment of ‘build it and they will come’ came to me like a lightning bolt.”

When Barber began to research, he was absolutely in shock that nobody had ever built an Apollo 11 monument, since, in his mind, the Apollo 11 story was the greatest story in the history of humankind. Apparently, that sentiment is shared worldwide.

Barber was not only able to vision and build these historic monuments with the Lundeen sculptors— America’s premier bronze artists, out of Loveland, Colorado—but has been able to maintain a rhythm for the last eight years of shining the light on American exceptionalism at the highest level, for not only America’s Apollo astronauts but the shuttle astronauts as well.

Barber’s dream is to continue building monuments of the great heavenly explorers, especially women explorers, as only 1% of the monuments in America represent women, and when it comes to women in science, it is only 0.1%. “The appalling low percentage of monuments of women is absolutely staggering,” says Barber. “And we can do better as a country, and we must do better and build many more female monuments to inspire a new generation of young girls to reach for the stars.”

After Donald Trump left office in 2020, Barber found funding for a monument of him, which was recently completed. The monument will be placed at the Trump International Golf Club in Florida. Barber is also securing funding for a monument of Bill Clinton, which he hopes will be commissioned soon. “I’m not a political person,” says Barber. “And I’m not here to make history. I’m here to record it.”

To say that Steven Barber has found his purpose would be an understatement. He’s actively working on five to ten monument-funding projects every day, and it’s his great hope to find the funding for a monument of the first Hispanic female NASA astronaut in history, Dr. Ellen Ochoa. Ochoa is a fourtime shuttle astronaut and the first Hispanic woman in space. She’s also the recipient of a Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Barber also has the rights to the great Olympian Rafer Johnson and is working on the funding to build an incredible monument of him before the 2028 games.

“Once you taste purpose, simply existing is completely unsatisfying,” says Barber. And he is just getting started. l

Bruce Boxleitner

Horseshoes kick up cakey adobe soil. Fragrant California pepper trees collect early morning mist as horses congregate near their stables waiting for the first cutting of blue-budded alfalfa hay. Whiterail fences glow in the sunrise. “I still dream about Hidden Hills,” says cowboy and actor Bruce Boxleitner.

During the filming of many of Bruce’s most notable movies and TV roles, such as being the first live-action CGI hero in Tron (1982); playing Billy Montana in Kenny Rogers as the Gambler (1980); and costarring in Scarecrow and Mrs. King (1983), Bruce called Hidden Hills his home.

Cowboy, actor and the first ever live-action CGI hero

Harkening from a rural dairy farm in Illinois, Bruce spent his childhood as a true cowboy. He moved to Los Angeles after completing his studies at the Goodman School of Drama at the Art Institute of Chicago, and upon landing his first major role as Luke Macahan in the popular TV series How the West Was Won (1977), Bruce decided to permanently reside here.

While filming How the West Was Won, Bruce was mentored by iconic Gunsmoke actor and skilled horseman James Arness. Bruce recalls, “He taught me what it is to be the star of a major production. Whether it is a good day or a bad day for the crew—you set the tone.” The two soon became dear friends, and now, Bruce says, “Jimmy meant everything to me.” This friendship connected Bruce to a generation of cowboy stars— because James Arness’ mentor was none other than The Duke himself, John Wayne.

Having relocated years ago, for Bruce, the city of Hidden Hills remains treasured. Amidst the intense demands of show business, the city was an oasis. “After having a long night on set turn into an early morning,” Bruce says, “I would drive through the Round Meadow gate and a weight on my shoulders would drop.” Bruce admits, “It was a magical experience.”

John Wayne was a childhood hero to Bruce, and James Arness soon introduced the two. Bruce recalls with a laugh that he was expecting John Wayne’s gruff on-screen presence but, instead, was met by a jovial man of 6'4” stature who immediately “put his arm on around my shoulder, which felt like a heavy log had fallen on me.”

After How the West was Won, Bruce’s career continued forward. Adapting to the swell of futuristic sci-fi films in the 1980s, Bruce landed the starring role in Disney’s 1982 film Tron. The popularity of Bruce’s Tron ignited the trend of using computer-

generated imagery to craft memorable characters that are currently seen in a tremendous amount of superhero and action movies. Bruce holds the title of being the first live-action CGI hero.

Bruce returned to his western roots filming Red River (1988) with dear pal and mentor Arness. In 1993, they filmed the final Gunsmoke TV movie, One Man’s Justice (1994), together, a film in which Arness specifically requested Bruce to star alongside him.

While his acting career flourished, starring in space opera Babylon 5 (1994) and a myriad of other film productions, Bruce meshed his experience with western and sci-fi stories by writing two fiction novels, Frontier Earth (1999) and Searcher (2001). Set in 1881, intertwining cowboys’ contact with extraterrestrials, he created an imaginative saga about “a part of history never written down.”

Away from his career, Bruce is an avid member of the Hidden Hills’ horse community. Bruce says he is “a firm believer in maintaining the city’s horse culture”—admitting, “I’d rather see the country on horseback than any other way.”

For years, Bruce owned his on-screen horse, Ol’ 55, from How the West Was Won He participated in many celebrity rodeos, including Ben Johnson’s celebrity rodeo and the Crown Royal Rodeos.

Overall, Bruce’s talent and passion for storytelling has garnered him an enduring, successful five-decade-long career.

“California has such a storied history,” says Bruce. Some of his fondest memories of Hidden Hills are “the casual gettogethers” where he’d gather his friends and they’d ride horseback through the spread of open land bordering Hidden Hills, formerly the Ahmanson Ranch. Bruce calls the land “wild and beautiful”—a

place where he found “chippings of pottery and arrowheads.” Movies such as Gone

With the Wind were filmed here, and Bruce cherished the land’s rich cinematic legacy.

With the increasingly popular desire for western stories, Bruce has returned to cowboying, starring in western-drama films in roles such as Ben Watkins in Far Haven (2023) and Judge Thaddeus in The Warrant: Breaker’s Law (2023). Currently,

Bruce plays the gruff frontiersman Oak Miller in the TV series Blue Ridge. In 2012, Bruce was inducted into the Hall of Great Western Performers and received the Western Heritage Award from the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum. From John Wayne to James Arness and now to Bruce Boxleitner, the spirit of great western storytelling continues to be preserved and upheld. l

TAVERNA TONY AT THE MALIBU COUNTRY MART

Taverna Tony, located in the heart of Malibu at the Malibu Country Mart, has been enchanting guests with their authentic Greek cuisine and hospitality for the past 35 years. Generations of local families and tourists alike have made this unique and charming restaurant one of the most iconic dining destinations in Southern California. What makes this restaurant unique is that it has continued to thrive in both good times and bad.

Seven years ago, this charming Mediterranean eatery was acquired by Hidden Hills residents Zane and Elisa Koss. Zane, who has over 30 years in the restaurant business, earned his stellar reputation at the modern American bistro and bar in Hermosa Beach called Zane’s. Shortly after acquiring Taverna Tony in 2018, the restaurant was challenged with the Woolsey Fire that burned 151 square miles in the Los Angeles and Ventura counties. After reopening several weeks later, the restaurant was filled with locals coming back to their safe and nostalgic taverna to share stories of their tragedies and triumphs. Then, just as everything started to get back on track, the world shut down due to the Covid pandemic, forcing the restaurant to navigate in uncharted waters. Never deterred, Zane and Elisa used the unexpected closure time to remodel the restaurant and give it new life. After remodeling, and when restrictions were lifted, people once again poured in to dine, dance, and forget their worries while being temporarily transported to a beautiful Greek island.

This past January, the restaurant faced another huge challenge with the devastating Palisades Fire that severely impacted the communities of Pacific Palisades, Topanga, and Malibu. While none of the structures in the Malibu Country Mart were destroyed, all businesses

in Malibu came to a halt due to the destruction and the limited access to the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH). Fortunately, the PCH in the Palisades burn area reopened to the public with one lane in each direction just in time for Memorial Day weekend.

The PCH reopening marked another great chapter and reason to celebrate as Taverna Tony welcomed back established patrons and new guests. Diners can again enjoy eating indoors, surrounded by the warmth of traditional Greek decor—featuring white plaster walls, handmade pottery, and live greenery cascading down the walls. Guests can also dine al fresco on the highly desirable outdoor patio covered in eucalyptus with hanging rattan pendants, string lights, and potted succulents that make everyone feel as if they are dining at a beach club in Santorini.

The full bar has a welcoming staff and a beautifully displayed bottle selection offering perfectly crafted cocktails. Whether guests like their cocktails shaken or stirred, they are covered. One customer favorite is the Santorini Sunset, made with Empress gin, egg white and lemon and topped with an orchid. The wine list is curated with a variety of wines from different regions around the world, including authentic Greek wines not found elsewhere.

Upon being seated, guests are treated with a complimentary and crave-worthy house dip paired with warm sourdough bread made fresh daily. Guests will also be delighted with a big assortment of appetizers, including the signature grilled octopus and the showstopping flaming Saganaki. One of the taverna’s most popular dishes is the chopped Greek peasant salad,

and heads always turn when they see the whole two-pound Branzino. The vast menu includes many traditional Greek dishes, including moussaka, spanakopita, and dolmades, to name a few. Guests can choose from four delicious types of lamb dishes and amazing kabobs. They also have quite a few vegetarian entrees available. There is truly something on the menu for everyone, and the generous portions ensure no one leaves hungry.

Taverna Tony offers a Meze Happy Hour weekdays from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., featuring small tapas-style plates, dips, and cocktails. For locals, this is truly the best two hours in Malibu. To experience a lively Greek party atmosphere, be sure to visit on Friday and Saturday nights for live Greek music and traditional belly dancers. Guests may even find themselves on their feet dancing the night away with someone they’ve never met before. Taverna Tony also delivers within a 10-mile radius. Whether it’s for dining in, take-out, delivery, or catering—they have everyone covered. Use code MALIBU10 for exclusive promotions on the website.

Don’t forget that if you are planning an event or celebration, Taverna Tony is an ideal venue for baby showers, birthdays, anniversaries, and weddings. The restaurant offers full-service event planning to personalize any special event. Come see what everyone is talking about. Day or night, there are no bad seats in the house. Opa!

Hidden Hills Got Talent showcased residents from ages 2 to nearly 100, featuring dancing, original songs, and timeless classics. Highlights included breakdancing, comedy, ballet by four sisters, trained dogs, and a skateboarding handstand trick. Three winners were chosen by celebrity judges: actress, model, and producer Milla Jovovich; Grammy-nominated songwriter and producer of OneRepublic, Tim Myers; Rock & Roll Hall of Fame lead guitarist of The Cars, Elliot Easton; and vocal coach Valerie Morehouse. Bonnie Watkins won first place overall for her acting monologue, while Helena Jacobson earned the Popular Favorite award voted by residents. The evening celebrated skills and courage in an unforgettable talent-filled event. Written and photographed by Britt Aaronson.

Civic Soul

Caitlin Stamos & Leah Fredkin:

Born from a friendship rooted in service

Civic Soul co-founders Leah Fredkin and Caitlin Stamos met on a volunteer trip to Tijuana, where they experienced the deep joy that comes from showing up for others. That trip planted a seed: the desire to build something lasting—where service is personal, joyful, and deeply human. They created Civic Soul, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, to bring people together through one-day volunteer experiences that foster connection, compassion, and meaningful impact. Each experience highlights a different cause and gives volunteers a purposeful way to show up and make a difference—from graduation celebrations for foster youth and housewarmings for fire survivors to holiday parties for farm workers.

Caitlin and Leah explain that they believe in the power of connection for a divided world. “We’re proudly non-political, non-religious, and radically welcoming,” says Leah. “Our mission is simple: to make giving back easy, meaningful, and human.”

Caitlin and Leah have found that the best way to fulfill this mission is to provide platforms for volunteers to connect with communities in need through various events and acts of service. “Many people want to give back,” explains Caitlin. “But many have no idea about how they can help and feel like they are really making an impact. That’s where we come in.

We host immersive, one-day events that make a difference. We go beyond checking a box. Our events are designed to be transformational for the communities we serve and the people who show up to help.”

One of the most important aspects of Civic Soul is that they only partner with trusted nonprofits. Every organization that they support is thoroughly vetted. Volunteers and donors can feel confident knowing their contributions make a difference—reaching people, not pipelines. The carefully curated volunteer activities allow volunteers to have “hands-on” service experiences and first-hand learning from the communities they serve. This way, volunteers can be a part of inclusive, uplifting, and judgment-free experiences that are personal, powerful, and purposeful while providing direct support for causes that matter to them.

Another reason why the projects are so impactful is that the volunteers get a deeper understanding of whom they are helping and why. Civic Soul believes that service means more when it’s rooted in understanding. Through storytelling, expert insights, and first-hand experiences, their events help volunteers grasp the more profound challenges—and joys—of the communities they support.

Many of the volunteer projects involve helping individual people and families. For example, in the past year, Civic Soul has helped people in need by providing recipients with their first month’s rent and deposit, providing essentials like food and clothing, hosting an educational resource fair, assisting with long-term temporary housing, and even gifting cars with the help of Caitlin’s friend and neighbor Howard Tenenbaum, president of Keyes Motors, Inc. The recipients are all Eaton Fire survivors/victims.

Leah and Caitlin believe that the success of the organization is simple: “Kindness, compassion, and shared purpose can bring people together to create real change. In a world where headlines often divide us, we’re here to bring people together through acts of service, compassion, and shared humanity We’re building a movement where service becomes a way of life l civicsoul.org | @ civicsoulorg | team@civicsoul.org

One family. One building. Four generations.

If the walls of this creaky, old wood building could talk, there would be many stories to tell.

Cornell’s legendary Old Place restaurant was founded by occasional actor Tom Runyon in 1970 as a gathering spot for friends and locals. The menu and service were spare, but patrons loved the place all the same. Those with good timing would find themselves being served by Tom’s actor friend Steve McQueen behind the bar.

The building was the former general store and post office of the Cornell community. In the 1940s, Tom’s mother, Cecilia, living in then-remote western Malibu, had to get her mail from the Cornell Post Office—a 90-minute roundtrip drive through Latigo Canyon as Kanan Road wasn’t built yet—so it was a nice continuation when her son bought the building.

Under Tom’s steady hand, the Old Place was a familiar friend to locals and regulars for almost four decades.

With Tom’s passing in 2009, his son Morgan took up the torch and stoked the warmth of the Old Place further by hiring a real kitchen team and expanding the menu while keeping its unique essence unchanged. The small rural establishment soon exploded into standing-room-only crowds on most nights.

Now, 75 years later, a 4th generation of the Runyon family is walking the old wood floorboards of the historic building as Morgan’s daughter Mackenzie is working at the restaurant one evening a week with her father. "It is truly an honor to work at the Old Place and to be part of the family legacy,” says Mackenzie.

Founded in 1911, Cornell is the only California community that has no sidewalks and few streetlights, is surrounded by over 5,000 acres of state and national parkland, and is less than five miles from a Bentley dealership. You want unique? That’s Cornell.

Family sometimes even extends out the door of the Old Place. The restaurant uses mismatched vintage dinner plates from thrift shops, adding another downhome touch to the singularly original vibe. Occasionally, dinner guests will recognize a plate pattern from their grandmother’s house and are invited to take the plate home. And the Old Place family continues to grow.

Before the Old Place opened in 1970, the building was Hank’s Country Store and the Cornell Post Office seen here circa 1940. Both signs above the door here remain in the building today.

The Lamborghini Temerario

Lamborghini has again raised the bar. In classic Lamborghini style, the Temerario, which replaces the Huracán, will push out 907 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. Revving to 10,000 rpm, the Temerario is a mid-engine, plug-in hybrid sports car powered by a 4.0-liter V8 twin-turbo engine combined with three electric motors. The sound of the Temerario, at 10,000 rpm, is an unbelievable symphony of dreams and engineering, pushing the pinnacle of performance. With a top speed exceeding 210 mph, and from standing to 0 to 62 mph in 2.7 seconds, the Temerario is ready to take on any challengers.

Keeping with the Lamborghini tradition, the name “Temerario” means fierce and courageous and was the name of a fighting bull

that fought in 1875. The Temerario will sticker at approximately $350K and, depending on options, will push north quickly.

“The Temerario is a genuine ‘fuoriclasse’: a car in a league of its own, an extraordinary and innovative vehicle both from a technical and stylistic point of view,” says Stephan Winkelmann, chairman and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini. “Every new Lamborghini must surpass its forerunners in performance terms, while at the same time being more sustainable from an emissions standpoint. With the Temerario, we have completed a key chapter in the electrification strategy included in our Direzione Cor Tauri plan; we also become the first luxury automotive brand to offer a completely hybridized range." l
