A Note From the Publishers

From lively festivals to heartfelt fundraisers, this summer has been a celebration of everything that makes our community so special—and we’re excited to share the festivities with you.

First, we commemorated the Calabasas Chamber of Commerce’s 70th anniversary and celebrated THE Foundation for LVUSD’s annual fundraiser, both which were hosted at the spectacular Calabasas Country Club. We also enjoyed a culinary feast at the 32nd Annual Casa Pacifica Angels Wine, Food & Brew Festival; the July 4th celebration at Calabasas Lake, where we encountered many furry friends in their best costumes; and the Calabasas SunSet Concerts, where we danced the night away. You can enjoy photos of these and other community events in this issue thanks to our great photographers.

As the summer winds down, we turn our focus to education to help parents prepare for the busy back-to-school season. Our “Education Station” section highlights many of the great schools and activity learning centers in and around our community. It also features local educationfocused businesses that are making a difference for our students.

Our cover feature tells the story of Hidden Hills resident Nadine Levitt and follows her fascinating career—from being an opera performer to founding two educational technology companies. Special thanks to Jim Jordan at Jim Jordan Photography for capturing her beauty, essence, and grace.

We also would like to thank the businesses and companies that advertise in 91302 Magazine. They are the “wind beneath our wings” who make this magazine possible and allow us to have the pleasure of bringing it into your homes. We hope you will support them with the same enthusiasm that they share with 91302 Magazine.

From the Pharmacist

Do my teen and preteen need a meningococcal vaccination?

Preteens and teens are at increased risk for meningococcal disease, which is an uncommon but serious illness. Meningococcal disease can be devastating and often—and unexpectedly—strikes otherwise healthy people.

Meningococcal bacteria can cause severe, even deadly, infections like meningitis (an infection of the lining of the brain and spinal cord) and bacteremia and septicemia (bloodstream infections). Sadly, death results in one of 10 people affected, and about one in five people who survive a meningococcal infection have permanent disabilities. The disease is highly contagious and can spread rapidly in close living quarters like college dormitories. It can also be spread through kissing, shared food and drink, shared vapes, and coughing or sneezing.

The CDC recommends meningococcal vaccination for all preteens and teens. All 11- to 12-year-olds should receive a single dose of a meningococcal conjugate (MenACWY) vaccine and a booster dose at age 16 to provide protection during the ages when teens are at their highest risk. Teens and young adults (ages 16 through 23) also may receive a serogroup B meningococcal (MenB) vaccine, and there is a new vaccine that combines ACWY and B in one dose for ages 16 and up. Many colleges require proof of meningitis vaccination for admission. Being vaccinated before college is especially important because meningitis symptoms mimic the flu and students often don’t seek medical help until it is too late.

Wills vs. Trusts: Understanding Your Estate Planning Essentials

Many people grapple with the complexities of wills and trusts. Let’s demystify these crucial documents.

The

Southern California reality

Even seemingly modest estates in our area can be substantial. When you combine your home’s value, retirement accounts, life insurance policies, and other investments, your “estate” can quickly add up. Understanding how to best manage and distribute these assets is paramount.

The role of a will

A will is a vital component of any estate plan, ensuring that your final wishes are known. However, for larger or more complex estates, a will alone may not provide the comprehensive structure and protection you need.

When a will Isn’t enough

Consider these scenarios:

Protecting young heirs : Leaving significant assets directly to younger beneficiaries without safeguards can expose them to potential misuse or mismanagement.

Complex assets: If your estate includes investment properties or a business, a simple will often falls short in addressing the intricate details of transferring these assets.

Incapacity planning: Crucially, a will only takes effect upon your death. It offers no guidance for managing your assets if you become incapacitated due to illness or accident.

Introducing the trust: A comprehensive solution

A trust offers robust asset management both during your lifetime and after your passing. Additionally, properly funded trusts allow estates to avoid the lengthy and costly probate process.

Trusts provide:

Flexibility: They dictate precisely how and when your beneficiaries receive their inheritance, ensuring that your legacy is distributed according to your wishes.

Asset protection: They protect assets for beneficiaries from creditors after your passing.

Incapacity provisions: Crucially, trusts provide clear instructions for managing your assets and affairs if you’re ever unable to do so yourself, offering peace of mind for you and your loved ones.

By understanding the distinct advantages of both wills and trusts, you can make informed decisions to create a personalized estate plan that truly reflects your family’s unique circumstances and financial goals. l

An Unexpected Overture: From Opera to Education

Photography by @jimjordanphotography

Makeup by Let’s Make Up

Nadine Levitt’s life has unfolded like a sweeping operatic aria: full of unexpected transitions, bold crescendos, and heartfelt expression. From a childhood in Europe, legal studies in New Zealand, a surprise singing debut at Madison Square Garden, and the founding of two educational technology companies, every chapter of Nadine’s life has been shaped by the transformative power of voice.

The Levitt family settled in Hidden Hills two years ago. They were immediately captivated by its bucolic charm. The sense of safety that allows children to roam and play freely, the properties that make the community feel like a retreat, and the presence of horses are all reminiscent of Nadine’s own childhood. After quickly falling in love with the close-knit spirit locally, Nadine felt inspired to get involved and now serves on the board of directors for the Hidden Hills Community Association and co-chairs its theater committee.

A 12-Year Evolution of Art as Inner Dialogue and Outer Hope NADINE LEVITT

English to add to her fluency in German. Her early musical experiences also sparked an interest in Italian and French. She toured internationally in high school with her school choir and performed with Opera New Zealand’s junior and emerging artists program. Nadine graduated college with a double major in arts and law, inspired by her father’s insistence to have a “back-up career.”

Nadine smiles as she reflects on the beginning of her creative journey at age 7 when she decided to become an opera singer while sitting beside her mother listening to Dame Joan Sutherland’s soaring soprano for the first time. Born in Switzerland and raised in Germany, Nadine moved with her family to New Zealand at age 8, where she quickly picked up

Years later in Los Angeles, while working as general counsel for a New Zealand company based in the U.S., Nadine had a chance encounter that changed everything for her. She was at a restaurant and former Dodgers Manager Tommy Lasorda asked her to sing—prompting an impromptu aria that not only earned her an invitation to perform the national anthem for the Dodgers but also caught the attention of Randy Bernard, then CEO of Professional Bull Riders. Just days later, Nadine sang the anthem at Madison Square Garden. That moment led to many more performances with the Bulls and opened a connection to legendary producer David Foster, who requested that she join him onstage the very night they met.

In addition to being an opera singer, lawyer, wife, and mother, Nadine is an author and educational technology entrepreneur and advocates to help families

and schools across the country with social-emotional learning. Moved by students and her own children, Nadine built a music app called WURRLY, followed by WURRLYedu, a music education platform used in schools across 22 states. Research shows that music fosters empathy, collaboration, and emotional regulation, the fundamental life skills and standards integrated into every lesson.

Nadine explains, “There’s nothing like that lightbulb moment in a child—when they suddenly say, ‘A-ha! I got it!’ Their curiosity is ignited, and that’s what fuels me. Education has played such a significant role in my own life. A big part of who I am was shaped by a few truly great teachers. I believe nature plays a role, but nurture is just as powerful.”

Nadine is committed to education and is passionate about the role of the arts in deepening foundational social skills. “I love diving into the research,” she says, “and the evidence is clear—when kids can name what they’re feeling, they’re better able to calm themselves. Just putting a word to an emotion helps regulate it.” This is the vision behind her children’s books—My Mama Says: Inside Me Lives a Village and Inside Me Lives a Superhero. In addition,

Nadine created interactive body-mind reflection toys and tools, such as a yoga deck honoring emotions.

My Mama Says is Nadine’s company that provides children with monthly emotional literacy subscription boxes, each focusing on different feelings—such as anger, fear, happiness, sadness, jealousy, anxiety, and love. The boxes include age-appropriate books, crafts, toys, and guided activities that draw inspiration from small and big emotions that occur during real-world experiences. The kits meet families where they are: at home, in cars, at dinner tables, and in their everyday lives. The products are portable, playful, and research backed—ideal for busy households looking for opportunities for teachable moments. The boxes are personally packed by Nadine’s own hands out of her home.

Supporting teachers is at the core of Nadine’s mission. Her school-based curriculum offers free, ready-to-use lessons, short videos, and interactive tools designed to make emotional learning fun and easy to implement. Nadine launched workshops and a nonprofit that prioritizes educators by offering creative community and personal wellness support. In addition to her aptitude for speaking several languages, Nadine’s multidisciplinary background in opera, law, education,

and entrepreneurship also allows her to speak fluently across different platforms: as a keynote speaker, curriculum designer, app developer, educational advocate, and mentor.

From the first notes sung by Dame Sutherland that awakened her young heart to meaningful moments with her family living in the 91302, Nadine’s life has unfolded like an aria with each movement harmonizing art and education. What began as a dream of grand performances has evolved into a more profound composition: a crescendo of lifelong learning that resonates far beyond the stage.

rebuilding WELLNESS with Dr. Lori Musto

On January 7, 2025, a devastating fire swept through Pacific Palisades, leaving behind a trail of destruction—and taking with it the life’s work of esteemed family physician Dr. Lori Musto. Her long-standing medical practice, Musto Medical, located at 881 Alma Real Drive, was reduced to ashes. The Palisades Fire, fueled by relentless Santa Ana winds and parched conditions, destroyed not just a building but a sanctuary of healing cultivated over decades.

With over 35 years of experience, Dr. Musto transformed her clinic into a refuge for patients seeking holistic care in family medicine, bio-identical hormone therapy, cosmetic dermatology, weight management, and anti-aging treatments. Her approach is unique— merging advanced medicine with a philosophy that beauty and wellness begin from within. Celebrities, athletes, and families alike have sought her out for her “soft-touch artistry” and personalized, compassionate care.

The loss was personal and profound. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Musto, until now, devoted her career to the Palisades community.

But even as the flames extinguished her physical office, they could not dampen her spirit.

As patients shared stories of how Dr. Musto transformed their lives—helping manage chronic illness, restore confidence, and ignite healing—she drew strength from their support. Refusing to let tragedy define her legacy, she swiftly rebuilt her practice in a new location.

By February 2025, Dr. Musto reopened Musto Medical at 26050 Mureau Road, #105, in Calabasas. The new clinic, just steps from Hidden Hills and Mountain View Estates, offers her full range of specialties in regenerative medicine, aesthetics, hormone therapy, and wellness.

Grateful and inspired, Dr. Musto is once again doing what she loves— serving patients with empathy, innovation, and resilience. Her story is not just about loss but about rebirth—a powerful reminder that healing can rise from the ashes. Visit mustomedical.com and her store at mustomedical.com/store. l

WaveBlock®

Groundbreaking Invention

A Calabasas Dad Invented This to Protect His Kids—Now It’s Helping Millions

Local real estate developer and real estate agent creates the first lab-tested solution to a growing tech health crisis.

Ben Salem is a name many in Calabasas already know. A lifelong 91302 resident and father of three, Ben built a reputation as a successful real estate developer and real estate agent, with offices in Calabasas, Beverly Hills, and Park City, Utah. But it was during the COVID-19 pandemic, when everything was shut down and families were stuck at home, that he discovered something that would change the course of his life.

With schools closed and businesses on pause, Ben was working from home while his kids attended school through all-day Zoom calls—constantly wired up with earbuds, laptops, and tablets. Like most parents, he assumed these devices were safe. But after digging into the science, what he found was deeply concerning: Nearly all wireless tech emits EMF radiation, and many experts believe that long-term, closerange exposure may carry potential health risks—especially for children.

Studies show the average child spends five to seven hours per day on screens, often with earbuds in their ears or iPads resting on their laps—are more than what current safety standards indicate kids can handle.

What shocked him most was learning that the FCC’s safety standards were set in 1996 and have never been updated— despite the fact that today’s devices are far more powerful, used for hours a day, and kept much closer to the body than anyone anticipated back then. At the time those standards were set, devices were only tested on adult men and never on children or for real-world use, like keeping devices in laps

or pressed to the skin. “I couldn’t find anything that actually worked—so I had to create something that did,” Ben says. “It was never meant to be a business. I built it for my kids.”

He tested every EMF protection product he could find. Some actually amplified radiation, while others did nothing at all. There was simply no effective solution out there. So he got to work—spending months building and testing hundreds of prototypes until something finally worked. That invention became WaveBlock®

WaveBlock® is the first and only FCC-accredited, lab-tested EMF protection product designed to reduce radiation from phones, earbuds, tablets, and laptops—without affecting signal quality. It’s backed by a growing international patent portfolio, and its impact has been immediate and far-reaching.

From the beginning, Ben also launched a nonprofit foundation. For every EMF sticker sold, WaveBlock donates one to schools, hospitals, churches, temples, and youth sports leagues— because the mission has always been about protection first, profit second.

Since launching, WaveBlock has protected over 2 million customers and is now expanding globally, with a recent rollout in the UK. The company also brought on MLB All-Star Mookie Betts as a strategic partner—someone who shares Ben’s commitment to protecting families and raising awareness.

Ben’s goal is simple: Educate more parents, protect more children, and push for modern safety standards that reflect how we actually use technology today. To learn more and sign up for EMF safety updates, visit waveblock.com l

READ. REFLECT. REPEAT. The High Holy Days—your annual spiritual reboot

I know it might come off as cliché, but one of the reasons I love studying Torah is because while the Torah stays the same, I change. Every year, when I reread the weekly portion, I interpret it with another year of experience under my belt. It’s an opportunity to find a hidden nugget of wisdom or a passage that didn’t resonate before but instead takes on new meaning with life experience. Think of it like watching your favorite movie or reading your favorite book for the 10th time. There’s always something new to discover because—while the medium stays static—we are dynamic.

One of the Talmudic passages I use as a guiding principle comes from Pirkei Avot (“Ethics of Our Fathers”): “Ben Zoma says: Who is wise? One who learns from every person, as it is said: From all my teachers I have gained understanding.” It’s a deceptively simple idea—that everyone we encounter has the potential to teach us something. But when I read it during Elul, the month leading into the High Holy Days, it takes on deeper meaning. This is the time of the year when we reflect, make amends, and strive to become the best version of ourselves. But it’s not just about learning from others. It’s about learning from ourselves—our mistakes, missteps, victories, and relationships.

Sometimes our most profound teachers are the ones we least expect. A child who asks a sincere question. A friend who tells us a hard truth. A stranger who challenges our assumptions. In this season of introspection, what if we approached each conversation with the curiosity of a student? What if we assumed every person— even those who frustrate or hurt us—might have something to teach us? Torah study models this mindset. The same words open new

meanings year after year—not because the text has changed but because we have. And that’s the essence of teshuvah.

Teshuvah is the Jewish concept of repentance—but it’s more than just saying sorry. It’s about recognizing when we’ve missed the mark, taking responsibility, making amends, and striving to grow. The word literally means “return”—to our best selves and to God. By being introspective, we don’t discard who we’ve been—we reread our own lives with new eyes, extracting wisdom and insight along the way.

If you’re interested in that type of personal and spiritual growth, please consider attending services for the High Holy Days. Shir Kadosh, my congregation, would love to welcome you. Email RabbiKyle@shirkadosh.org and mention this article for more information.

Rabbi Cantor Kyle Cotler is the spiritual leader at Shir Kadosh. Shir Kadosh is a Jewish congregation which embraces the progressive aspects of Judaism. We harmonize the rituals and observances of old with a modern interpretation. We incorporate elements from popular culture and other cultures into our teachings to foster a deeper understanding of others and ourselves. We believe music is the centerpiece to worship and meaningful connections are the centerpiece to community. l

Turtleback Mountain Golf & Resort

Trading City Lights for High Desert Skies

For those who call Los Angeles home, the city’s charms are hard to deny. But as time passes and life’s priorities shift, the relentless pace and endless sprawl can become a daily challenge. Whether you’re considering a second or a forever home, imagine escaping that ceaseless urban buzz for the tranquil embrace of Turtleback Mountain Golf & Resort in Elephant Butte, New Mexico. Just saying the name invites a deep exhale.

The natural allure of Turtleback Mountain Golf & Resort

Nestled along the banks of the Rio Grande and cradled by the rugged silhouette of Turtleback Mountain, Turtleback Mountain Golf & Resort is a place where the sky stretches wide and blue and where the landscape is lit by pastel hues. Life there moves to the rhythm of the high desert—slow paced, deliberate, and utterly captivating.

From L.A. gridlock to open roads

The particular agony of traffic is a well-known reality in L.A. Even the shortest commute becomes a test of patience. Designed for low traffic and tranquility, the gated residential neighborhoods of Turtleback Mountain Golf & Resort are safe and easy to navigate. And the roads make for smooth, uncongested travel.

In Sierra County, time seems to expand. There’s space to breathe, to think, to simply be. The absence of gridlock is more than a convenience—it’s a daily affirmation that life isn’t meant to be rushed.

Nature at your doorstep

Turtleback Mountain Golf & Resort offers immediate access to wide-open spaces. The resort is surrounded by miles of hiking and biking trails and dozens of state and national parks, and the nearby Elephant Butte Lake State Park is a haven for boaters, anglers, and nature lovers.

At Turtleback, the outdoors isn’t just a weekend luxury—it’s an integral part of daily life.

A golfer’s paradise

For golf enthusiasts, the championship Turtleback Mountain Golf Course blends seamlessly into the desert landscape, offering both challenge and beauty at every hole. It’s also the new home of the PGA’s New Mexico Open.

Golf at the resort isn’t just a pastime—it’s a way to connect with the land and the community.

Affordability and quality of life

One of the starkest contrasts between Los Angeles and Sierra County is the cost of living. In Sierra County, your dollar goes much further. The distinctive homes of Turtleback Mountain Golf & Resort are comfortably affordable.

With lower property taxes, affordable utilities, and a leisurely pace of life, residents find they have more time and resources to invest in pursuits that matter—

whether that’s perfecting their golf swing, enjoying seasons of outdoor adventures, or simply savoring quiet moments.

The joy of slowing down

Perhaps the greatest gift of moving to Turtleback Mountain Golf & Resort is the chance to rediscover the pleasures of a slower, more intentional life. It’s re-learning the rhythm of nature and the luxury of time—unstructured, unhurried, and deeply fulfilling.

Neighbors greet each other by name. Local businesses in Elephant Butte recognize and appreciate residents coming in. Community events—from golf tournaments to lake festivals and art fairs—draw locals together in celebration of shared joys. There’s a sense of belonging that can be elusive in a metropolis, but there, it’s part of the fabric of living.

Embracing change: Practical considerations

Of course, leaving Los Angeles—and all its amenities—behind isn’t a decision to make lightly. Moving to Turtleback Mountain Golf & Resort means embracing a new kind of convenience: fewer chain stores, a slower pace, and a reliance on local businesses. But for those seeking an escape from the relentless rush, these changes come as welcome relief.

The region is easily accessible, with the delightfully named Truth or Consequences offering essential services and a quirky arts scene.

The local hospital, friendly shops, and nearby schools provide a close-knit infrastructure for residents. And when the bright lights call, Albuquerque and El Paso are an easy drive—close enough for a weekend adventure but far enough to preserve the tranquility of this Southwestern retreat.

A smart move worth making

Relocating from Los Angeles to Turtleback Mountain Golf & Resort is more than a change of address—it’s an invitation to transform life. There’s room to breathe, to dream, and to enjoy pursuits that matter.

For those weary of city living, craving beauty, tranquility, and genuine connection, Turtleback Mountain and the wideopen spaces of Sierra County New Mexico present not just a destination, but a new sense of home.

The question isn’t why make the move—but why not? Contact Susana at 575.636.5383 for information on available new homes. turtlebackmountainresort.com l

Vitoli Where the ground meets greatness

Across the hillsides of Calabasas, Hidden Hills, Agoura, and into Ventura County, one name continues to lead the way in slope-savvy construction and earthwork excellence: Vitoli. With more than 1,800 hillside projects completed, Vitoli has become a benchmark in retaining walls, slope stabilization, drainage systems, and precision earthwork. Whether reinforcing a bluffside estate or transforming a rugged backyard into a safe, livable space, Vitoli brings engineering expertise, in-house execution, and a deep respect for the land. When the terrain is complex, the timeline tight, and the stakes high, Vitoli delivers.

Built by the same hands, repaired by the same hands

One of Vitoli’s greatest points of pride is what happens after a project is complete. With Bernardo Gonzalez—former

foreman, now head of operations—clients gain something rare: a direct line to the very builder who was there when the project was first constructed.

If something needs adjustment, repair, or follow-up, it doesn’t get passed off. It gets personal attention from the person who was onsite during the original build. That’s more than customer service—it’s long-term integrity. For the 1,800 clients Vitoli has served, the promise remains: If we built it, we’ll stand behind it. Not through a warranty desk. Through the very hands that built it.

A legacy, evolving with strength

While the same expert crews, office staff, and project managers continue to drive daily operations, Vitoli has refined how those resources come together. Bernardo— who earned his leadership through years of hands-on

dedication—now brings greater speed, focus, and unity to project execution.

His rise reflects Vitoli’s spirit: hard-earned, loyal, and deeply rooted in the craft. With Bernardo guiding operations and founder Rob N. Litman continuing to lead design and development initiatives, Vitoli moves forward with the same DNA-and sharper coordination than ever before.

Slope solutions that last

Retaining walls, especially in hillside regions, are more than structural—they’re foundational. They define the safety of a property, the stability of a yard, and the peace of mind of a homeowner. Vitoli designs and builds each wall with exacting care—from the first caisson to the final stone—

Pools

remains the go-to name in hillside construction, erosion control, and outdoor design.

backed by real-world terrain knowledge and unmatched site preparation.

Clients don’t just get results. They get reassurance that the work beneath their home was done right—and if it ever needs attention, the same team is still just a call away.

The future is steep—Vitoli is ready

Under the combined vision of Rob and Bernardo, Vitoli continues to grow without ever losing touch. The values remain: Do it right, stand behind it, and treat the slope like it’s your own. This is leadership that understands the hillside. This is service that continues long after the invoice is paid. This is Vitoli—where integrity is engineered into every inch. Ultrabed MATTRESS

The Ultimate Luxury Sleep Destination

Nestled between Malibu and Calabasas sits Ultrabed Mattress, the place where celebrities and regular folk alike go to get their sleep problems solved and where dreams really do come true. 91302 locals don’t have to travel farther than Agoura Hills to visit America’s largest—and likely most beautiful—mattress showroom. At Ultrabed Mattress, customers will not only find practically every top name brand mattress at the guaranteed lowest price but also unique and highly coveted locally made brands such as Back Science, Flex-Tech, and Tempflow.

The secret to Ultrabed’s top ratings and amazing growth comes down to its unwavering commitment to bring an experience to each customer that is reminiscent of eras gone by—when customers came first and sales were a far distant second. Ultrabed is associated with Relief-Mart, Inc., a health products company that has had the highest customer service rating for over 22 years. Dr. Rick Swartzburg, D.C., is the company’s founder and serves as the vice president of product development and as a personal company consultant.

Another reason behind the company’s success is that it doesn’t have commissioned salespeople applying high-pressure sales tactics. The company hires competent and well-trained associates who have one goal in mind: to provide each customer with the very best personal attention, without money factoring into the equation, and to provide expert advice on the mattress best suited to each customer’s individual needs.

Lonna Weber, co-publisher of 91302 Magazine, discovered this firsthand when she was shopping for a new mattress. “I had tried everything from the popular mattress brands to the super exclusive mattress brands that used materials like horsehair,” says Lonna, “but nothing has supported my back and given me the quality sleep that my Back Science mattress has. I highly recommend this store to my family, friends, and neighbors.”

The bottom line is that there is no need to look beyond Agoura Hills to find an excellent mattress and to find the sleep one can only dream of. Learn more at Ultrabed.com and BackScience.com. l

Cooling Calabasas With Confidence

Karli Misters Delivers Smart Outdoor Comfort

Daniel Londono, a Calabasas local, father, and veteran construction project manager knows the pain points of outdoor living in Southern California heat. With over 15 years of field experience, he saw one clear opportunity: transform outdoor areas into usable, comfortable extensions of the home—even during the most extreme summer months.

That vision became reality with The Home Mist System by Karli Misters.

Engineered to thrive in Calabasas’ demanding climate, the system features: A 1000 PSI variable-speed pump for quiet, powerful misting; Ruby nozzles for ultra-fine, efficient cooling; stainless steel lines; dual-zone functionality; a self-draining valve for durability and low maintenance; full weatherproofing; custom layout design; and a lifetime warranty—because it’s built to last.

Whether it’s 105° or pushing 115°, the Home Mist System can lower ambient temperatures by up to 30°, extending the usability of patios, play spaces, and outdoor retreats by three to four more months each year.

And it’s not just homeowners taking notice—two campuses in the Las Virgenes Unified School District have installed the system, offering students relief during hot recesses and outdoor activities. When schools trust it, you know it’s built right. Daniel’s passion is creating real, lasting value: smart design, proven engineering, and peace of mind—all backed by a commitment to local excellence. FOR KANE

A Father’s Mission of Love and Hope

In a quiet corner of the 91302 community lives a man whose name you may know—but whose story you likely don’t.

Karl Larsen is a celebrated celebrity photographer whose lens has captured music legends like Slash, the Rolling Stones, and countless cultural icons. His work has graced the covers of magazines and worldwide campaigns—but Karl’s most meaningful and demanding role doesn’t unfold under the photography lights. It unfolds quietly, every day, at home—as the father of a bright, complex 13-year-old named Kane.

Kane Larsen has been diagnosed with ADHD, ODD, and Autism Spectrum Disorder. These are more than medical diagnoses—

they shape how Kane experiences the world and how the world reacts in return. He excels in school subjects like math and science yet struggles with emotional regulation and day-to-day life skills. The simple things—connecting socially, communicating needs, adapting to change—can feel overwhelming for him. Karl watched helplessly as his son’s spark dimmed—until the summer of 2022 when everything changed.

That summer, Kane attended a robotics camp at Ojai Valley School, a nurturing, structured learning environment. For the first time in years, Karl saw his son begin to engage—laughing, problem-solving, connecting with peers, and no longer battling the constant overwhelm. That glimpse was enough to change

everything. This fall, Kane will enter Ojai’s ninth-grade hybrid boarding program—a perfect blend of independence, structure, and compassion.

To celebrate Kane’s progress and raise awareness for families facing similar challenges, Karl turned to what he knows best: photography. With the support of Studio CT and his longtime subject and friend Slash, Karl is releasing something truly personal—an exclusive fine-art edition of 10 prints featuring an iconic image of Slash performing live. The photograph, now part of music history, has been personally signed by both Slash and Karl.

But this story isn’t about fame. It’s about faith.

Karl calls the journey “Karl for Kane.” It’s more than a fundraiser— it’s a movement of awareness, compassion, and connection. A father using his greatest gift—not for galleries or glory but to build a better future for the one who calls him Dad.

“You can’t be okay with who you are,” Karl says, “until your child is okay with who they are.”

And maybe, in the quiet moments—after the shows, after the prints, after the long days of trying—what matters most isn’t what we leave behind but whom we lift up.

Because sometimes, the most powerful images aren’t captured through a camera. They’re built through love, trust, and the unwavering belief that every child deserves a chance.

Performers included LVUSD Superintendent Dr. Dan Stepenosky, who played saxophone with his band—Doc Step and the Expendables. Additional performances included Bob Hackett and the Phoenyx Big Band, the Chad Bloom Jazz Combo, and the Trailblazers Jazz Ensemble. Photography by Peter Mounteer, of Galerie Carlyle

Alan Lazar LVUSD Board of Education

Alan Lazar was elected to the LVUSD Board of Education in 2024 as the top vote-getter, earning a record-breaking 17,000+ votes and endorsements from all four local mayors and councilmembers across the district.

A passionate advocate for education, Alan ran on a platform of student achievement, safety, fiscal responsibility, and expanding STEM, arts, and music programs. He is deeply interested in how artificial intelligence will shape the future of education and is committed to ensuring that every child feels safe, welcome, and supported in LVUSD schools. He strongly believes in the values of kindness and community and is unwavering in his stance that there is no place for hate or antisemitism in our schools.

Upon winning the seat on the LVUSD Board of Education, Alan stated, “I think in this time, when the nation is so divided, our local communities are more important than ever—for people across the political spectrum and of all

different stripes to continue to work together to build kind and strong communities (and) excellent schools for our kids, the next generation of Americans.”

Alan and his husband, Dr. Gustavo Ruiz, have lived in Calabasas for a decade and are proud parents of two daughters in LVUSD schools.

In addition to his role on the school board, Alan is an accomplished music publishing entrepreneur and executive. Highland Hall

Educating the Whole Child for a Changing World

What if your child’s first school experience felt serene and beautiful while also building competence, industry, and selfesteem?

At Highland Hall Waldorf School in Northridge, the preschool and kindergarten programs are intentionally designed to nurture early academic readiness while preserving the magic of childhood. Grounded in the internationally respected Waldorf philosophy, the play-based approach cultivates confident, resilient learners who are well-prepared for what lies ahead.

“Traditional preschools and kindergartens have always felt fast-paced, pressured, and check-boxy, making it more likely to lead to student burnout,” says parent Jessica Severin. “A deliberate approach, where a child has the freedom to be a child, has been much more nurturing and enriching. The Waldorf philosophy instills a whole-person educational

foundation that allows our daughter to foster a deep love of learning.”

Each day follows a comforting rhythm: joyful morning circles with song and movement, nature walks around the lush 11-acre campus, watercolor painting, candlelit story time, and unhurried play indoors and out. These rich experiences support developing motor skills, language, focus, creativity, independence, and social confidence, the true foundations of lifelong learning. Highland Hall also fosters a warm, connected parent community. From seasonal festivals to parent education evenings and a welcoming on-campus Parent & Child program, families are seen and included every step of the way.

For over 70 years, Highland Hall has offered an intentional beginning to education; one that honors children and strengthens families. l

Oaks Christian School

CONNECTING GENERATIONS

At the Institute for Health Science at Oaks Christian School (OCS), students are taking their education beyond the classroom walls—and just down the street. What began as a simple idea—connecting students with senior citizens— has grown into something much more profound. Through a new partnership with The Ridge, the senior assisted living facility adjacent to the school, students are gaining realworld experience, building intergenerational friendships, and redefining their perceptions of aging and healthcare.

Pfeiffer and Ayoub-Safri met with The Ridge Activity Director Jocelyn Aquino to pitch the idea. The volunteer effort has blossomed into a successful partnership, with students connecting with residents through games, art, and conversation. But beyond the canvas painting and blackjack games lies something more meaningful: empathy, growth, and the bridging of generations.

The initiative was spearheaded by juniors Ella Pfeiffer and Michael Ayoub-Safri, co-presidents of OCS’s chapter of HOSA—Future Health Professionals, a national student organization for aspiring healthcare workers. With guidance from Director of the Health Science Institute Dr. Bryan Wong, they were determined to find a way for students to engage in hands-on, service-oriented learning—even as high schoolers with limited access to traditional clinical settings.

Aquino says that she and her team were “over the top excited and happy” when students reached out. “Other clubs and schools had contacted us,” she explains, “but the OCS students were the only ones who followed through.”

Aquino says the partnership has transformed the atmosphere at The Ridge. “The room comes alive when the students visit. It’s the most active and joyful we’ve seen it. The residents ask, ‘When are they coming back?’ Some even schedule their appointments around the visits. The staff looks forward to it, too—we love planning and setting everything up for them.”

Besides developing communication and leadership, The Ridge partnership reflects the broader mission of the Institute of Health Science, which emphasizes service as much as academics.

“We talk about developing the mind, the heart, and the hands,” says Dr. Wong. “The mind is what they learn about the body and disease. The heart is developing compassion. And the hands are the practical application— going out into the community and serving.” l

BEYOND THE ALGORITHM

Writing college essays that resonate

Authenticity and vulnerability still matter in an AI-driven world. There isn’t a day that goes by when a parent or student doesn’t ask me about AI’s impact on college admissions. As an education coach navigating the college applications process for my students, I focus on AI’s impact on the essays, including a 650-word personal statement and four 350-word personal insight essays for UC applicants. In addition, several institutions require supplemental essays ranging from 100 to 650 words each. I’ve had many inquiries about a college admission officer’s ability to detect AI aids such as ChatGPT in the essays. ChatGPT and similar AI tools can manifest essays, stories,

reports, and excerpts in seconds. AI detectors evaluate the possibility that text, or a portion of it, was created using AI. Unlike plagiarism checks, which compare text to a database of existing material, AI detectors utilize machine learning to evaluate sentence structure, word choice predictability, and repetition to determine if the text was AI-generated. Some AI detectors may compare content to known AI outputs to determine similarity. However, since AI-generated text is intended to resemble human writing, all detection findings are probabilistic. Thus, they are not always reliable.

The technological development is at the stage where the created text is logical in framework and premium in wording. However, in the context of a college application essay that is appreciated for key attributes, such as the student’s core values, vulnerabilities, and growth insights, the AI text struggles as AI models miss the intricate details of personal experience that only the writer who underwent such experiences could authentically capture.

Admission officers are trained to evaluate applications and review thousands of essays every year. Just through their lengthy experience, they can differentiate authentic essays from AI-generated ones. Through their knowledge of AI models, they can distinguish the patterns of sentences and standard phrases that surfaces with AI-generated content. Yet the most distinctive tell-tale sign, as mentioned, is the lack of insightful details that can be conjured if the writer personally underwent the experiences. As such, AI-generated content lacks the emotional depth and vulnerability that comes from introspection and the resulting human connection needed to demonstrate authenticity.

Admittedly, the detection aids are far from perfect, yet they are swiftly evolving to capture the subtle nuances of AI-generated content embedded in human written passages.

The takeaway from all this is that, instead of second-guessing how ChatGPT and similar AI tools might be detected, college applicants should

spend meaningful time on their personal statements and related essays beginning with self-reflection to brainstorming to frame working and draft crafting to actualizing authentic pieces that share their personal stories. The writing journey is a search within oneself that can create more than just essays; it can create a more profound sense of self and purpose that no AI tool can actualize. That genuineness captured in the sharing of core values, experiences, inspirations, and aspirations will make future college students shine in application essays and life in general. l

Connecting a Caring Community Changes Lives With Dec My Dorm

College offers students the opportunity to expand their minds, form lifelong friendships, and prepare for the future. It also poses myriad challenges, especially for foster kids who must overcome even more hurdles than the average college student.

“ We believe every person we touch touches another and, in turn, continues the ripple effect of growing our community of givers.”

Jill Franklin, manager of the Independent Living Program at the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services (ILP), recognized certain needs foster children faced when entering college dorm life. She began a grassroots project in 2018, with the department’s assistance, outfitting students with dorm room essentials to help them feel supported.

“I created this passion project after hearing a student from a group home talk about how terrible she felt during her first day of college when she realized she didn’t have the same dorm room items as everyone else,” describes Jill. “I placed a link to an Amazon wish list of college essentials on my Facebook page to see what would happen. It just took off from there.”

In 2021, the Calabasas nonprofit Connecting a Caring Community (CCC) expanded greatly on Jill’s concept to create Dec My Dorm, offering in-person giving events where students receive bags full of dorm room supplies such as bedding, towels, utensils, dishes, toiletries, and beyond. That first year, they helped around 21 students. Today, they’re supporting 140 foster youth beginning their college journeys at UCLA, CSUN, UCSB, and elsewhere throughout the country with more than 1,600 items. The most recent Dec My Dorm event took place on July 20th at the Stephen Wise Temple.

Phyllis Shinbane, former director of operations at CCC from 2017 through 2024, continues to chair Dec My Dorm as a volunteer. Phyllis praised these young scholars for overcoming personal challenges, “We’re grateful to every single donor who bought even one item from the Amazon wish list. These kids have to work harder than others to earn their spot in college. Now we’re sending them to school with dignity and class.”

Contributing to the cause

Lisa Kodimer, co-founder and executive director of CCC, joined forces with a local Calabasas family to found CCC nearly a decade ago. They operate out of the belief that “the more you give, the happier you live.”

“We believe every person we touch touches another and, in turn, continues the ripple effect of growing our community of givers,” says Lisa. “This motivates our community to mobilize each other to live a life of giving.”

Lisa expressed her profound gratitude to Jill, Phyllis, and Co-Chair Allison Weiss. “This compassionate trio continues to ensure foster youth in Los Angeles have what

they need to go off to college,” she says. “Thanks, as well, to our donors, dream team of volunteers, and board of directors who selflessly help us fill the needs of this beautiful community.”

Changing lives one step at a time

One extremely impressive recent Calabasas High School graduate, Devyn Anderson, received a special shout out. Connecting a Caring Community presents its first Leadership Award to Devyn, a dedicated volunteer for the past three years, supporting foster youth through CCC’s teen program, Connecting with Teens. She even founded a club at her school.

“We can’t wait to see the impact Devyn continues to make in the world as her leadership, heart, and service continue to change lives,” says Lisa. “In honor of her inspiring commitment, we’re thrilled to announce a new financial scholarship in her name. The initial scholarship will support a foster youth attending Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, the same college Devyn will be attending. It will provide $1,000 per year for four years to Karla Dominguez, a young woman who, like Devyn, is ready to make a difference.”

CCC also created scholarships in memory of Jordyn Solny, a beloved, local 27-year-old Oak Hills Elementary School kindergarten teacher who tragically passed away following a sudden illness. The first Jordyn Solny Memorial Scholarship awarded $1,000 a year to a young woman pursuing a degree in elementary education at the University of Montana. They also presented 15 one-time $1,000 scholarships on June 24th at Disney Hall.

Generously giving back

There’s nothing more fulfilling than finding a purpose to support, especially when it supports others. CCC also partners with such charitable groups as the UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital, Ronald McDonald House of Los Angeles, and many others. CCC also supplied muchneeded essentials to victims of this year’s devastating January 7 wildfire.

The shortest bridge to inclusion

Zavikon

Zavikon began with a simple, heartfelt belief: Everyone deserves the opportunity to share their talents in a meaningful way. Founded on the idea that inclusion isn’t just a value but a pathway, Zavikon, based in Calabasas, connects neurodivergent and disabled individuals with employers who are ready to embrace all that they have to offer.

The spark for the name came one day when founder Rebecca Beam searched for “the shortest bridge in the world” and stumbled upon Zavikon Island’s tiny bridge. That moment became more than trivia—it became a symbol. Together with co-founder Hilary Kokenda, Rebecca envisioned Zavikon as just that: the shortest bridge to inclusion.

A mission of connection and a vision for change

Zavikon bridges the gap between overlooked talent and forward-thinking companies. Its mission is to create meaningful, lasting employment for individuals with disabilities or neurodivergence— matching ability with opportunity.

By addressing the underemployment of those who are uniquely abled, Zavikon envisions a future where inclusion is the norm. It guides employers along this journey too—helping build not only diverse teams but strong, informed, and supportive workplaces as well. Through trusted community partners, Zavikon recruits individuals and learns their strengths, interests,

and support needs. Candidates are thoughtfully matched with employers. Once placed, Zavikon supports both the employee and the company with coaching, education, and empathy— ensuring success on both sides of the bridge.

Leadership with a purpose

Rebecca, a longtime leader in the tech industry, has dedicated her career to elevating human potential. She helped launch MindSpark, Inc., and after MindSpark’s acquisition by auticon, Rebecca became president of its U.S. operations, leading its U.S. expansion and driving growth. Her vision for inclusive hiring has earned national recognition, including the Milestones Visionary Employer Award.

Hilary brings a unique blend of technical insight and heartforward leadership from her years at The Walt Disney Company. Her passion lies in bridging the human gap—ensuring workplaces are not just diverse but deeply inclusive.

Success stories are at the heart of everything Rebecca and Hilary do

When Zavikon first opened its doors, the team met a brilliant young man with an extraordinary talent for mathematics. He had independently passed five actuarial exams and dreamed of becoming an actuary. However, after more than 100 unsuccessful interviews, he was ready to accept any job just to move forward.

Despite his exceptional ability, his interviews didn’t reflect his potential. As someone on the autism spectrum with auditory processing challenges, he often needed up to a minute to respond to questions. Unfortunately, most interviewers misread the pause as a lack of knowledge and would either rephrase the question or move on—disrupting his thought process.

Recognizing this barrier, Zavikon reached out to the CEO of a major insurance company who also has a son on the spectrum. Thanks to his understanding and support, this young man was given an opportunity to interview with one key adjustment—the interviewer was coached to ask a question and wait patiently for a response, without interrupting. The result? He got the job.

Since 2021, he’s been thriving in his career at Liberty Mutual.

This is what happens when Zavikon matches talent with understanding—and creates space for people to succeed.

At its core, Zavikon operates with compassion, respect, and truth. Every decision reflects a commitment to seeing people not for their limitations but for their potential. And every placement is a step closer to a world where everyone belongs. A Very Special Situation

As the cultural center of the city, the Calabasas Library serves the vital function of bringing the world to its citizenry—like an internet you can step inside.

Among its many important services, the Calabasas Library provides a dedicated special-collections room where a treasure trove of local history is archived and made available to the public. It is one of only three known city libraries in a wide area with a special-collections room—the other two are the Thousand Oaks Library and the Central Library in downtown Los Angeles.

The extraordinary history at Calabasas Special Collections dates back to the late 1800s, with photos and handwritten letters from Calabasas pioneers. The library is proud to be protecting numerous photos of early local schools, post offices, and general stores. The collection serves as an authentic time machine to take visitors into the past.

Several years ago, the library was gifted over 300 historic USGS maps of Southern California that provide wonderful reference material for this dynamic part of the country.

The mission of Special Collections, under the steady hand of City Librarian Barbara Lockwood, is to not only protect and preserve local history but to bring it out of the shadows to share with all visitors and to continue to expand the holdings with additional historical treasures.

The best way for any city to chart its progress is to know its past. The Calabasas Library Special Collections helps ensure that Calabasas locals appreciate how far they have come.

Kramers General Store on Calabasas Road was a main gathering point for early residents. Seen here circa 1940, it remains standing today with retail stores inside.

Seen here in about 1900, Wesley, Albert, and Edward Daic (“Dice”) were early Calabasas citizens. Their simple wood home had no electricity or running water.

The first Calabasas school was built in 1890. Many of the students rode bicycles and horses to class. Grades one through eight were all handled by a single teacher.

Cornell University student Danica Lee interned with Special Collections this past summer.
