Dear Friends,

W

hen I was 10, my family moved to Korea. In Korea, desserts are n’t a big tradition. Usually, after a meal, you’re offered a simple slice of fruit. But that wasn’t quite dessert in my sist er’s and my eyes. So, we did what we had to do: we learned to create our own treats from scratch. This experience taught me a lot about how the end res ult could change based on the different types and quality of ingredients. My lov e for sweets persisted into adu lthood, with dreams of becoming a chocolatier or pas try chef always lingering in the background. It’s still a possibility!

It seems that sweets are never too far from my mind. I’ve like ned making the perfect chocolate chip cookie to creating a great organization al culture — you need the right ingredients. Sim ilarly, 826LA supports studen ts by providing high quality ingredients to add to the most important one they already have: their own lived experiences. Mixed with our staff, volunteers, a wh imsical environment, guidance, and opportunities to practice, we often have the honor of being the first to experience their completed treats in the form of their written stories.

The enthusiasm with which stu dents engage in our field trip s, tutoring, and essaywriting programs is evident in their collected works: books of poems, short stories, chapbooks, anthologies, and more. 826LA fosters an atmosp here of creativity and fun that encourages the joy, playfulness, and empowerm ent that writing can bring to young people. We tak e pride in our growing progra ms that help students document their memories, exp ress their ideas, and imagine and create their futures.

A huge thank you to everyone who makes this work possible — our dedicated 826LA staff, our ever inventive volunteers, our generous don ors, and our supportive community. A Year’s Worth of Delectable Student Writing The Art of Vulnerability

We Are Infinite

Written by students in our Academic Leadership Community

In The Art of Vulnerability, you will find deeply personal writing from seven young poets sharing their hearts, minds and stories with you. Over the past several months, these remarkable students created a safe space in which they shared their innermost thoughts, fears and yearnings with one another. In this environment, students learned that there is no such thing as a “perfect” poem, that it is freeing to talk about painful moments in your life, and that strength lies within vulnerability.

Students wrote personal stories and read authors including Ada Limon, Elizabeth Acevedo and Anne Lamott. Students created cultural monologues with the collaboration of the Geffen Playhouse, some of which are included in this book.

This book is a capsule soaring through the hazards of space. It’s protection from meteoroids like COVID, the death of a loved one, or a break up. It’s a rocketship with precious cargo: a cluster of diverse teenage souls and charts of their losses, loves, struggles, hopes. Raw emotions and vulnerability in bottles. Sacred moments rattling together. The fuel of our shuttle is our determination––we are here and we will be here! Finding our passions. Learning self-love. Strengthening our weaknesses.

Accepting mistakes. Charging through our frontiers. Breath by breath, step by step, day by day, star by star. Light year by light year. We are the universe, our stories told, untold, and forever. We Are Infinite.

Tres Leches Cake

to Try at Home

Ingredients: Butter, for greasing 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 3 large eggs, at room temperature 1 cup sugar 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract, divided

Pineapple Tamales

1/2 cup whole milk, at room temperature 1 1/2 cups heavy cream 1 (12-ounce) can evaporated milk 1 medium cinnamon stick 2 whole cloves 1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Ingredients: corn husks 2 pounds fresh corn masa dough ½ teaspoon baking soda 2 tablespoons warm water, or as needed 1 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature 1 cup vegetable shortening, at room temperature 1 cup white sugar 1 (20 ounce) can pineapple, drained and finely chopped Instructions: Place corn husks in a bowl, cover with boiling water, and soak for 30 to 60 minutes. Drain, place on a work surface, and cover with a clean, damp towel.

While corn husks are soaking, combine masa dough, baking soda, and water in a bowl.

Knead until dough has a smooth and even consistency, adding more water, 1 teaspoon at a time, as needed. Take care not to add too much water.

Beat butter, vegetable shortening, and sugar together in a second bowl with an electric mixer until smooth and creamy. Slowly add masa dough and knead until mixture has a uniform consistency. Mix in chopped pineapple.

Spread about 1 tablespoon masa mixture onto a corn husk. Fold the bottom of the husk over the filling, then fold sides of husk together, one over the other. Finally fold the top of the husk into the tamale, making a little package. Repeat with remaining husks.

Place a steamer insert into a saucepan and fill with water to just below the bottom of the steamer. Bring water to a boil, then reduce heat to medium low. Add tamales with the open side up and cook covered until filling is heated through and separates from the husk, about 1 hour.

Ready to eat!

Instructions: Preheat oven to 350°F. Lightly butter a 9- x 13-inch glass or ceramic baking dish. Place flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl and whisk together.

In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with paddle, beat eggs with sugar and 1 teaspoon of the vanilla at medium-high speed until very light and fluffy, about 10 minutes.

Add half of the flour mixture and mix at low speed until just incorporated. Gradually add whole milk, then mix in remaining flour mixture.

Pour batter into prepared baking dish and bake until center of cake springs back to the touch, 25 to 30 minutes.

Transfer baking dish to a rack and let cake cool for at least 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, whisk cream with evaporated milk, cinnamon stick, and cloves in a medium saucepan over moderately high heat; bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 3 minutes. Remove from heat, cover, and let steep for 10 minutes.

Combine condensed milk with remaining 1 teaspoon of vanilla and the ground cinnamon in a heatproof bowl.

Strain steeped cream mixture into condensed milk and stir to combine. Let cool for 20 minutes.

Using a fork, poke holes all over cooled cake. Gradually pour milk mixture over entire cake. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.

Gently toss strawberries with sugar in a bowl. Let stand at room temperature for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally to dissolve sugar.

Cut cake and serve with strawberries, whipped cream, and mint.

Easy Sugar Cookies Chewy Chocolate Gingerbread Cookies

Ingredients: 1 ½ cups plus 1 tablespoon unbleached all-purpose flour 1 ¼ teaspoons ground ginger 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon ¼ teaspoon ground cloves ¼ teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg 1 tablespoon unsweetened Dutch-process cocoa powder 1 stick (½ cup) unsalted butter, room temperature 1 tablespoon grated peeled fresh ginger ½ cup dark-brown sugar, packed ¼ cup unsulfured molasses 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 ½ teaspoons boiling water 7 ounces best-quality semisweet chocolate, cut into ¼-inch chunks ¼ cup granulated sugar Instructions: Line two baking sheets with parchment. In a medium bowl, sift together flour, ground ginger, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and cocoa.

In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat butter and grated ginger until lightened, about 4 minutes. Add brown sugar; beat until combined. Add molasses; beat until combined.

In a small bowl, dissolve baking soda in boiling water. Beat half of flour mixture into butter mixture. Beat in baking-soda mixture, then remaining half of flour mixture. Mix in chocolate; turn out onto a piece of plastic wrap. Pat dough out to about 1 inch thick; seal with wrap.

Refrigerate until firm, 2 hours or overnight.

Heat oven to 325 degrees. Roll dough into 1 1/2- inch balls; place 2 inches apart on prepared baking sheets. Refrigerate 20 minutes.

Roll in granulated sugar. Bake until the surfaces crack slightly, 10 to 12 minutes, rotating halfway through. Let cool on sheets 5 minutes, then transfer cookies to a wire rack and let cool completely.

Cookies are best the day they are made but can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature up to 5 days.

The Best Peppermint Bark Ingredients: 12 oz. semisweet chocolate, chopped 12 oz. white chocolate, chopped 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract 8 candy canes, crushed Instructions: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Fill the bottom of a large pot with 3” water and bring to simmer over medium heat. Reduce heat to low, then place a large heatproof bowl on top. Add semi-sweet chocolate and stir occasionally until chocolate has melted. Stir in extract. Pour into prepared baking sheet and spread into an even layer with an offset spatula. Refrigerate until set, about 20 minutes.

Over the same pot of barely simmering water, place another large heatproof bowl. Add white chocolate and stir until melted. Pour over set semi-sweet chocolate then top immediately with candy canes. Refrigerate until set, about 20 minutes.
