605 went on our annual road trip, and this year brought us to the town of Aberdeen. Known for Storybook Land, pheasants, and L. Frank Baum (author of The Wizard of Oz), we got to see the art and foodie side of things.

Cameron Stalheim

Speaking of food, the team also checked out Sioux Falls' newest offering, Vinyl Taco. Among the delicious food and pitchers of margaritas, the Vinyl Social Club is a great place to unwind, play games, and dance to new and vintage records.

There are two kinds of people in this world. The ones who think Nebraska is nothing more than a 77,000-square-mile cornfield, and the ones who don’t. We find that second group to be a lot more interesting, and are comforted by the knowledge that there are people willing to look deeper to discover what makes this place so special. We’re not trying to convince everyone. Just you. So go to VisitNebraska.com and be the kind of person who gets a free Travel Guide.

HANG OUT WITH

Elizabeth Smith PHOTOS BY HUBBARD VISUALS

‘Tis the season for interactive fountains and (many) events at Main Street Square in downtown Rapid City, including Frühlingsfest & Spring Market on May 4 (see page 10 for more info). Executive director of Main Street Square Elizabeth Smith knows all of the things going on this spring and summer, and gave 605 just a glimpse of her day-to-day. With over 200 events each year, things can get pretty crazy around Main Street Square. It’s fun, but nuts. It is hard to say which event is my favorite, as they all hold a special place in my heart. Now moving into my sixth year, I have learned to enjoy the quiet times on the square as much as the busy times. I really like to find a spot out on the square under the stars and just reflect. Something about watching the glowing fountains dance to the music is grounding. I call this my “Main Street Square meditation.”

I wouldn’t be a true Gen Xer if I didn’t stop by Press Start from time to time to challenge my longtime nemesis, Centipede. The place is packed with a vast variety of vintage games, and they have beer!

First thing most mornings, I pop upstairs from our office to Alternative Fuel and grab a cup of coffee to start my day. Their new Lavender & Honey Latte is my favorite.

When it’s time for a mid-day escape, Victoria’s Garden is the place I go. I can get lost in the charming décor and the sweet smell of flowers. I’m always welcomed by a furry greeter, [owner] Vicki, or one of the other friendly “flower goddesses.” I try to keep fresh flowers on my desk as much as possible.

On lazy weekends, my husband and I find time to sneak down to Tally’s Silver Spoon. Their bright, cheerful atmosphere sets the tone for the day ahead. Get the Eggs Benedict! If you’re lucky enough to be in downtown Rapid City on a Friday afternoon, plan to have lunch at Delmonico Grill and order the mussels. You won't be disappointed. I’m excited that spring has finally arrived in the Black Hills. It's time to grab an outside table, enjoy a glass of Mythical Beast, watch the sun set, and laugh with my besties at Firehouse Wine Cellars.

Who’s Toy House is my go-to spot when shopping for the little ones in my life. They offer a great selection of unique, high-quality items you can’t find anywhere else in the Black Hills, plus they gift wrap all purchases for free. While you’re there, try to conquer the world’s largest Marble Maze. FOR MORE INFORMATION, VISIT MAINSTREETSQUARERC.COM.•

When I’m not at the Square, I’m either taking care of my garden or exploring the Blacks Hills in our UTV. We have lived here for 15 years, and I still haven’t even scratched the surface of what this area has to offer.

CONSTRUCTING COMFORT PHOTOS BY WES EISENHAUER PHOTOGRAPHY

Known for his “mountain modern” flair, John Koch of John Koch Construction knew he wanted to bring his home-building skills to the Black Hills area. Koch, his brother, and their friends decided to buy property in Lead, and when his friends ended up selling him their portions, it was the perfect time to begin the building process. A few years, multiple road trips, and one sheep mural later, the Sheep Hill Chalet was born.

GRANDIOSE GREAT ROOM After navigating the over seven-acre terrain and finding the perfect spot to build, Koch began planning the cabin of his dreams. “We found this floor plan online and tweaked it just a little bit, purposely moving the fireplace to the middle of the room to offer a little bit of separation between the two spaces,” he said. Besides the multitude of taxidermy, the two spaces sport 16-foot windows, locally made furniture, and eye-catching art that adds culture and community to the secluded lodge. “The wicker furniture was hand-crafted by the owner of Monk’s House of Ale Repute, Jerry Hauck, which is amazing. As far as the Native American print above the fireplace, we saw it hanging at Kaladi’s Bistro in Sioux Falls, and I bought it off the wall and had it framed,” he said. In addition to the open-concept kitchen and dining room, this space also allows access to the outdoor area that consists of a grill, a sitting area, and a hot tub with a view.

HIGH-RISE HANGOUT Sharing a wall with the living area is the loft— an added space that caters to kids and adults alike. “The mural on the wall of the loft is a one-of-akind piece by Shaine Schroeder. He came out here for about a week to work on this, which is amazing,” said Koch. Around the corner is a metal ladder that leads to the intimate area. Complete with a bean bag chair and TV, this allowed Koch to create a space for the children without giving up a ton of space. “Putting stairs in for the loft was going to take up too much room, so we went with the ladder. I really like the way the metal looks strapped to the wall,” he said.

BUILT-IN BUNKS During one of Koch’s many week-long trips to the jobsite, he realized that in order to accommodate a large amount of people, he needed to utilize every square foot. “One thing I kept thinking was that people on vacation don’t need super big bedrooms, so I knew that is where I needed to conserve space,” he said. Koch’s main contractor, "go-to idea man," and employee Brandon Voss took some creative liberty and ended up making built-in stairs in conjunction with the bunk beds.

"

"The one thing about a cabin is there are no rules when it comes to decorating."

2 6 \\\\\\\\\ M AY

“We found a photo of this concept, and Brandon was able to lay it out and build the steps into the beds,” he said. “We also have USB plugins built in to the beds to make it functional for both kids and adults.” Making each space useful and appealing was constantly in the forefront of Koch’s mind, especially when it came to the final touches.

HISTORIC HIDES Besides the custom furniture and the alluring location, Koch was able to include enticing details that make this cabin one to remember, especially in the guest bedrooms. “We got the buffalo hide from Prairie Edge Trading Co. & Galleries in Rapid City. The story is the tribe would pick the most pivotal thing that happened that year and etched it on the hide, like a baby being born. It comes with a legend you can look through to figure out what the symbols mean,” he said. With this bedroom only having one window, Koch knew he needed some sort of added value for the space. “I just thought it would be a nice way to relax when you're lying there,” said Koch. “I want people to be able to relax anywhere in this cabin, and this is just one way they can.” FOR MORE INFORMATION, VISIT SHEEPHILLCHALET.COM.•

When it comes to branding and a solid theme, Vinyl Taco is on top of it. Murals of musicians are in the entryway, and the company only plays vinyl records on turntables behind the bar. It’s legit. The entire 605 team went, which included account manager Taylor Hanson, editorial assistant Kyle Determan, multimedia designer Yany Avelar, director of sales and marketing John Snyder, and myself. We were seated in a corner booth and geeked out as we were handed menus that were each created with its own record album cover. Conversation starters: 10 points right there. Our server greeted us and brought us bottles of water from a (sexy) cooler with red lights that was near the bar. Chilled bottled water and he gave us two bottles: 10 points right there. We asked for sodas and ordered a pitcher of margaritas for us to share (with adorable basil), and our server informed us they had Coke in a bottle: 10 points right there. I’m already way off the point system, but I’m bad at math. Back off me.

3 2 \\\\\\\\\ M AY

We started with several appetizers, like the popular Chicken Chicharrones. The seasoned fried chicken skins were served with habanero BBQ and jalapeño ranch sauces. These eliminated the awkwardness of only ripping off chicken skin and just embraced everyone’s (or some people's) desire to only eat the skin. It was crispy, but was so much better with the BBQ. It had a kick and was a whole different ballgame with it. We also ordered the Tortilla Poppers. These were fried flour tortillas filled with cream cheese, fresh jalapeño and bacon, and were served with orange salsa and jalapeño ranch. This is where Taylor tried the ranch and never looked back. We’ll get to that later. The poppers were super fresh, and the tortillas were warm and soft… like so soft I couldn't shut up about it. “I like that it’s not a big chunk of pepper inside of the popper. The

ingredients are chopped up and mixed where it’s easy to eat,” noted Taylor. Yany had been taking photos and took a break to finally try one. She automatically exclaimed, “Yum!” It was in reaction to the orange salsa and jalapeño ranch. “These sauces are both really good,” she said, after she came back up for air. We also had the Queso Con Chorizo. The white cheddar was melted with green chiles, fireroasted jalapeño, house-made chorizo, and chips. The queso was good, and you could tell the chips came right from being made in-house. As 90 percent of 605's staff consisted of females, we all noted how cute the presentation

of the chips was in the container that resembled what you buy fresh vegetables or fruits in at the store or farmers market. And then… They brought chips before we asked for more: 1 million points right there. You know when you have to keep asking and you feel stupid (or maybe you don’t because you have self-control and stop after one or three baskets)? This eliminated that. Because they’re known for tacos, we ordered a traditional taco (Carne Asada), and two specialty tacos (Crispy Chicken & Mango and Crispy Fish), but not before trying the Smothered Burrito Supreme.

FOOD + DRINK

This had a fresh flour tortilla filled with seasoned rice, black beans, onions, and the choice of meat, and was topped with cheese. We chose the seasoned ground beef. Patrons also have the choice of red roasted tomato sauce, green chile sauce, or queso. I love me some green chile sauce, so we ordered that, and Taylor asked for a side of queso. It was a solid burrito and was great to share, but I was excited to try what they’re named for. We started with the Crispy Chicken & Mango Taco. This had crispy-crusted chicken, fresh spinach, shredded cheese, fresh diced mango, and house-made sweet onion vinaigrette. “They’re killing it with the chicken,” said Yany with her first couple of bites. Meanwhile, this is about the time Taylor realized she had an addiction to the jalapeño ranch. “I want to dip everything in this,” she said, as she went to dip a taco in it. “Oh, wait, I should probably try it before I dip it in ranch.”

Next was the Crispy Fish. This was crispy-crusted whitefish, and had red slaw, sriracha tartar, fried capers, and serrano-avocado salsa. John loves a fish taco and was obsessed. “This is super creamy and tangy,” he said. Last, but not least, was the Carne Asada with marinated steak, onions, radish, cilantro, serrano-avocado salsa, and queso fresco. “There is a lot of flavor up in this bish,” I said as I took a nibble. It was packed with powerful (and delicious) ingredients. After all of that, we decided we needed dessert, so we ordered the Churro Waffles. The mini churro waffles had an almond glaze, cinnamon sugar, ice cream, and a choice of caramel or chocolate sauce. We went with chocolate. I blinked and had eaten half of it by myself. “This is like breakfast,” said Taylor. I noted, “I wish this was my breakfast.”•

She also enjoyed it without, but went right in for more ranch after her first taste.

O BOTTOM LINE: This is such a cool atmosphere in the restaurant portion alone, and the Vinyl Social Club is beyond (see side bar on page 31). I can’t wait to be able to not be pregnant and enjoy a cocktail from a mixologist and listen to vinyls with friends for happy hour. Also, with over 15 tacos, I also can’t wait to try more (and I’m sure Taylor is excited for more ranch).

Tater Tot & Patton is an independent film written and directed by Andrew Kightlinger, and is about a wayward millennial escaping to her uncle’s ranch in South Dakota, “unhinging his placid boozer life.”

GALORE

The film stars Jessica Rothe (most recently in La La Land and the lead of the Happy Death Day franchise) and actor Bates Wilder. After being shown at film festivals nationwide, Tater Tot & Patton had screenings in theaters throughout South Dakota in March. Now Kightlinger has even more to celebrate with streaming becoming available for the film on reputable sources like Amazon, iTunes, and Google Play starting May 14. 605 caught up with the movie buff and professional about what inspires him, his film favorites, and what he does beyond the camera.

ONE POPULAR/CLASSIC FILM I THINK IS OVERRATED IS… The Big Lebowski. Sorry not sorry. TATER TOT & PATTON... was born from my grieving heart over the loss of my mother—to show how healing can come from unexpected places and to give audiences a sliver of redemption when the screen goes black at the end. THE SOUTH DAKOTA SCREENINGS… were an unbridled success. Our producers, especially Dohui Kim, worked tirelessly to keep audiences engaged on social media, and worked with theater owners to track admission trends.

Our numbers reflected a steady word-of-mouth. It goes to show that if filmmakers want to keep the theatrical experience alive, you have to hustle to get it done. Compel audiences off their sofas and into the cinema. TOURING WITH YOUR FILM CAN BE… bad for your liver. ONE MOMENT I’LL NEVER FORGET WHEN DIRECTING WAS… after making lead actor Bates Wilder eat cans of beans for 22 takes, he took his revenge by releasing a fart in an enclosed space, nearly suffocating me.

“We had a showing in Mobridge so my grandmother could bring all her friends from the area.”

I’VE PREMIERED FILMS AT FILM FESTIVALS, LIKE… Slamdance (for a screenplay I wrote), Palm Springs International ShortFest, South Dakota Film Festival, Napa Valley Film Festival, etc. ONE OF THE BIGGEST MOMENTS FOR ME IN MY FILM CAREER HAS BEEN… signing with a reputable manager at Artists First in Los Angeles. They rep[resent] the likes of Jordan Peele and John Chu. Even though I’m still a guppy there, I feel like I’m in good company. A MISCONCEPTION SOME PEOPLE HAVE ABOUT FILMMAKING IS… we make loads of money. Trust me, we don’t. RIGHT NOW I’M BUSY… working like mad writing my next film—another healing drama with a bigger scope—and also writing an E.T.-esque sci-fi adventure for family audiences. I’m still committed to getting a film about sex trafficking made as well. WHEN I’M NOT WORKING, YOU CAN TYPICALLY FIND ME… running 12 miles to excommunicate feelings of inadequacy in my career. IF I WASN’T MAKING FILMS, I’D BE… a glass-bottom boat tour guide in Tobago. SOMETHING I’M EXCITED ABOUT THIS YEAR IS… selling my first screenplay and becoming an actual working writer. And subsequently paying off loans and debts.

605 Road Trip

HEADING NORTH BY ALANA SNYDER

THE 605 TEAM PACKED UP THE CAR (TO THE BRIM) AND HEADED NORTH FROM SIOUX FALLS TO ABERDEEN. KNOWN FOR STORYBOOK LAND AND OUTDOOR RECREATION, WE WERE EXCITED TO CHECK OUT THE LOCAL FOOD AND ART SCENE.

First Stop

DEMPSEY’S BREW PUB

605’s Kyle Determan was at the wheel as we headed on I-29 N. To break up our trip, we stopped at Dempsey’s Brew Pub in Watertown—a favorite of ours for some of the best pizza in South Dakota. Owner and certified pizzaiola Sean Dempsey was there to catch up with us as we munched on Spinach & Artichoke Dip and Buffalo Chicken Ranch Dip (handcrafted dips with house-made Naan Tandoori). As The Portuguese pizza came out fresh from the kitchen, Dempsey told us he would also be in Aberdeen working on his newest location, Danger von Dempsey's Pizza & Brewhäus, which opens this month.

Bed & Breakfast

FOOTE CREEK

Already feeling bloated (great self-control to kick off the trip), we hopped back on the interstate. From there, we got on to US-12W, which took us all the way to Aberdeen. Just six miles northwest of town was our bed and breakfast: Foote Creek. The location’s tagline is “rediscover tranquility,” and is on a remote piece of property. We were just in time for sunset. Hosts Ron and Carla Kaaz answered the door and took us on a tour of their home. It was built with a bed and breakfast in mind in 2000, and the Kaazes' first guests stayed in January 2001. The couple says they had stayed at bed-and-breakfast inns previously and wanted to try it themselves, especially after becoming “empty nesters.” The first floor has a wheelchair-accessible room, and there are three other bedrooms upstairs (most have queen beds and a murphy bed, and one has two twin beds). Each has its own bathroom. There is access to the main living room and kitchen on the first floor, and there is also a small living room with its own porch and mini fridge on the second floor. (The all-star award goes to Ron, who helped us hook up an iPad to the upstairs television that night to watch the season premiere of Game of Thrones.)

Watering Hole SLACKERS

Before we settled in for dragons and potential surprise

deaths, though, we headed into town for snacks and to stop by a local watering hole for a beverage. We ended up at Slackers downtown, which had vintage furniture and a vast beer selection. They state they have the widest selection of craft beer in town, with over 100 available. Owner Lamar Marshall was behind the bar and helped us pick out the beer of our liking, and we found out he is originally from Georgia. Grabbing our brews, we headed over to the gaming area, where patrons can either belly up to the bar or sit in some comfy chairs to play the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) Classic or the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). We sat at the bar and watched each other fail at Super Mario Bros., and 605’s Taylor Hanson challenged Kyle to Mortal Kombat. Slackers also has darts, pool tables, and chess, and also supports the local music and comedy scene with open mic the last Sunday of the month.

Coffee Run

RED ROOSTER COFFEE HOUSE The next morning the team was up bright and early (for us) to get ready and meet Ron and Carla downstairs at Foote Creek for a homemade breakfast. Carla was whipping up lemon pancakes with a blueberry sauce. She also was making a soufflé with asiago cheese and sausage from her hometown of Long Lake. Foote Creek actually shares some recipes on their website, like the recipes for Sausage Wild Rice Quiche, Cranberry Oat Scones, Blueberry/ Rhubarb Freezer Jam, and the Beef Breakfast Burrito. We then bid them adieu and headed back into downtown Aberdeen to the Red Rooster Coffee House, where we met up with Laura Ptacek of the Aberdeen Area Convention & Visitors Bureau. She would be acting as our guide for the trip, and we got right to ordering caffeine to get going for our busy day. The community staple owned by brother and sister Dan Cleberg and Kileen (Cleberg) Limvere has been around for 20 years, and recently moved to a new location down the block. They’re known for great coffee, food and drink options, and an extensive bookstore that also hosts music and other events for creatives. Tuesdays they have Old Time Jam from 2:30-5:30 p.m., Thursdays they have Art & Music Night from 5:30-8:30 p.m., and the second and fourth Thursdays they have Open Mic Night starting at 7 p.m.

A “hub for creativity,” the main purpose is to draw all walks of life and to help patrons “feel at home.” For food options, there are sandwiches, salads, and nachos (Red Rooster loves hot sauce). The company also owns an antique shop next door, so we grabbed our coffee and wandered around, eventually making several purchases.

Canteen Stop

HISTORIC MILWAUKEE DEPOT Laura gave us the sign that it was time to go, and we headed to her office building, which is also the Historic Milwaukee Depot that served as a World War II Red Cross/USO Canteen. The railroad still utilizes part of the depot, but much of the structure has been preserved to serve as a reminder of Aberdeen’s railroad roots and the generosity of its people during the war. On August 19, 1943, the canteen was established to feed troops traveling on special trains through town. They had coffee, sandwiches, donuts, soda, and a special treat—the famous Pheasant Sandwich. Troops allegedly raved about it all over the world. Visitors can stop by the building to check out the canteen displays and to learn more. We found out that, while the canteen was only open two and a half years, they served more than 586,000 service members.

Lunch Break

PALM GARDEN CAFÉ & CHOCOLATE SHOPPE It was already time for lunch, so the group headed over to Palm Garden Café & Chocolate Shoppe. The yellow building gives just a preview that the entire inside is monochromatic with yellow walls, yellow seats, and yellow accents. Not only is it a café, but it’s also a bakery and chocolate shoppe. Carla at Foote Creek had raved about their Potato Soup, so I ordered a cup of that (thank you, Carla). Kyle had the Bruschetta, Taylor had the Pesto Chicken panini, 605’s John Snyder had the Gyros, and I had the Roast Beast sandwich.

My favorite part, though, was that this adorable space also welcomes patrons to carve something into their booths (just refrain from carving on tables). So 605 left their mark. Laura had a Palm Garden staff member take us where the building’s co-owner Carlyle Mardian has the entire upstairs covered in sports memorabilia. You can eat there by request, and the organization of all of the items is almost as impressive as the collection itself.

Perusing the arts

PRESENTATION COLLEGE + NORTHERN STATE UNIVERSITY Next up was a back-to-back art gallery tour. First we stopped by the Wein Gallery at Presentation College for their latest exhibit, which featured watercolors by South Dakota touring artist Judy Thompson entitled “Prairie Gleanings.” Erin Giovannini, special assistant for project development & Wein Gallery coordinator, told us about Sister Anna Marie Weinreis, PBVM, whom the gallery is named after. She served as a Frenchlanguage professor and an Academic Dean at Presentation College for many years, and celebrated 70 years as a Presentation Sister at the age of 90. Her passion and love of art engaging with people of all ages resulted in the Mini Gallery, which eventually was renamed the Wein Gallery. The special case features artists throughout Aberdeen and the upper Midwest.

5 0 \\\\\\\\\ M AY

We then headed to Northern State University’s campus to check out three galleries: the President’s Gallery (semester-long exhibits of guest-artist works or pieces from the permanent collection), the Johnson Fine Arts Center (JFAC) Gallery (exhibiting nationally or internationally recognized contemporary artists and student artworks from the permanent collection), and the Student Center Gallery. Each gallery was so unique, but probably the best part was when our guide, associate professor of art Greg Blair, asked if we wanted to see the students’ art studio. The space was formerly a gym and had transformed into a multi-level space of creativity.

TWIST CONE IS KNOWN FOR MAKING THEIR SWEET TREATS INTO “SILLY CHARACTERS” WITH EDIBLE EYEBALLS.

Cooling Off TWIST CONE

After much walking, we decided to get a sweet fix and rest our feet at the Twist Cone, which is like a landmark in Aberdeen (and is always busy). They have a flavor of the week, so we gave that a try and “twisted it” with vanilla. This week was Purple Cow. Known for ice cream treats that come with edible eyes, they also have popcorn (rumor has it that it’s like “movie popcorn”) and BBQ. While the others had ice cream cones, I indulged in the Donut Sundae, and we were all so involved in our desserts that we realized we needed to bolt over to our next stop: the Capitol Theatre.

5 2 \\\\\\\\\ M AY

End Scene

CAPITOL THEATRE Brian T. Schultz, associate artistic/managing director of the Aberdeen Community Theatre, met us in the lobby of the 1926 vaudeville/movie house, which acts as a movie theater (Capitol Cinema) and as the home for community theater (Aberdeen Community Theatre). The historical building seats 450 and has a French/art deco design. It was the premier movie house until the late 1980s and now hosts

movies like Apollo 11 (which was showing while we were visiting) and also hosts the annual South Dakota Film Festival. Brian asked if we wanted to see the tunnels under the theater, and of course we said yes. We saw things like the orchestra pit and costume rooms, including a giant wig room.

Dinner Bell

MAVERICKS STEAK & COCKTAILS We said our goodbyes and parted for a little relaxation before dinner at Mavericks Steak & Cocktails. When we did arrive, we were ready and hungry. The Western-themed restaurant is known for Certified Black Angus Steak that is aged 30 days and is “perfectly marbled.” What is very unique to Mavericks, though, is the way you cook your steak–literally. The Steak & Stone Sizzling Plate is brought to the table and patrons first sizzle both sides of their cuts of meat and then slice them into pieces, and then continue to cook them until they’re done to their liking. The dry heat of the stone “sears in the natural juices and flavors of the steak.”

5 4 \\\\\\\\\ M AY

Before we got to that, though, we tried their award-winning Mavericks Wings, which are smoked, fried, and then grilled with Signature Mavericks Sauce. Once our Garlic Tenderloin and Sirloin came out, it was like dinner and a show–a show you need to realize you’re part of and pay attention to, because the steaks cook fast. The best part? If anything cooled off, you could just plop it on the stone for a couple of seconds, and boom. Warm again. When I’m back, though, I want to sit on their beautiful patio filled with plants. Even in the crummy weather we had, it was a gorgeous, outdoorsy space. After a successful first day, we wrapped it up and got some rest.

Breakfast & Boots

SAMMY’S RESTAURANT & OMELETTE SHOP + HITCH'N POST The following morning we met back up with Laura at Sammy’s Restaurant & Omelette Shop. The business is named after owners Len and Emma Scherr’s daughter, and features–you guessed it–omelettes and other breakfast and diner lunch offerings. John ordered an omelette that had the restaurant’s Supreme Sauce. They make 20 gallons of this secret family recipe a week (mind you, they’re not even open Saturday and Sunday). At this point of our glutenous trip, we were dying a little, but lingered on to Hitch'n Post. Boasting they’re "the Dacotah’s finest Western store,” they’re not wrong. The family business is full of high-quality cowboy boots, fashion, and local goods. In the back is an antique store as well, where I grabbed a thing or two. Taylor and Kyle had way too much fun getting styled by the staff, and Taylor left with her dream hat (think cowgirl meets Beyoncé in the Formation music video).

Historical Goodbye DACOTAH PRAIRIE MUSEUM We then left for our last stop: the Dacotah Prairie Museum. The museum is there to “facilitate conversation of the prairie and its people, cultivate insight, and curate its collections as a catalyst for intergenerational exchanges to inspire children, connect families, and build community through education, programming, exhibits, and its collections.” We checked out the 17 galleries, including the latest entitled “Brown County on the Gridiron,” which showcases the history of football in Brown County. A showstopper, though, was the Hatterscheidt Wildlife Gallery. This exhibits businessman Fred W. Hatterscheidt’s love for big game hunting. “He delighted in foreign safaris and tours,” which led him

to places like Africa, India, Japan, Canada, Alaska, and many others where he acquired most of the animals on display. He traveled on a total of six safaris from 1948 through the 1950s. Among one of the “most prized animals” in his collection is the African Elephant. As we said our last round of goodbyes to the kind locals showing us around and welcoming us into their establishments, we also thanked Laura for the unforgettable tour. We know this is just a glimpse into Aberdeen and are excited to come back for more.

INJURY LAW Suffering a serious injury in an auto accident can have a devastating impact on your life. Unanticipated medical bills and time away from work create both emotional and financial hardships for you and your family. When these accidents happen because of another person’s negligence, victims are entitled to a settlement to compensate them for losses they experience as a result. Insurance companies will go to great lengths to avoid paying the fair value of your claim. At Hoy Trial Lawyers, our dedicated motor vehicle accident attorneys will be there to hold the insurance company accountable and work to ensure that your interests are protected.

And big they are. For example, the Southwest Surf and Turf Nachos are tortilla chips topped with queso blanco, smoked shrimp, grilled steak, peppers, onions, corn and black bean salsa, a shredded three-cheese blend, and southwest ranch. Harry’s also has a special on another popular item—wings. Monday is 50-cent wings night, and patrons can either choose a sauce or rub. “We smoke our wings prior to deep frying them, and we have a bunch of homemade sauces,” said Lawrence. “Pineapple Whiskey is one of our most popular sauce options.” One of the newest additions to the menu is the Sandwiches & Melts section for evening dining. “People loved them at lunch and wanted them at dinnertime,” said Lawrence.

A fresh choice is the Turkey Bacon Swiss, which has thinly sliced fried turkey, bacon, Swiss cheese, tomato, lettuce, and house-made garlic mayo on grilled Texas toast. Also newer to Harry’s is liquor. The restaurant acquired a liquor license in the last year, so they have just recently been creating a cocktail list, says server Jane Allen. This summer they'll have cocktails like the Malibu Summer Rose (pictured above). “This is our first patio season with cocktails,” said Allen. “We’re excited to experiment with different drinks and enjoy the sunny weather.”

WADDY’S BAR & GRILL

BIKERS AND MORE FLOCK TO HUDSON BY ANDREA VAN ESSEN

L

ESS THAN A MILE FROM THE IOWA BORDER, IN THE SOUTHEASTERN CORNER OF THE STATE, SITS THE TOWN OF HUDSON. It’s a small community with a population of just around 300 people, but it has a wide draw. Downtown Hudson is home to Waddy’s Bar & Grill, and it has been for 18-plus years. Owner Adam Waterman is a local who used to drive a truck for a living. Back in the 1990s, however, he seized an opportunity to open a restaurant in the small town. “I’m from the area, I know the community, and it seemed like a good opportunity,” said Waterman. Since then, the restaurant has experienced massive growth, both in space and popularity. It began when Waterman acquired the restaurant next door and used the space to expand his seating. Since then, he says he’s added on at least five more times. Right next door, Waterman operates The Buckaroo and The Parlour, which serve as a more traditional dining room and event space, compared to the bar and grill. Both operate alongside Waddy’s and serve the same menu. Around 2003, Waterman says he started to notice the restaurant gaining more popularity. Like many small-town establishments, Waddy’s serves the surrounding towns as well.

Waterman says his main customer base reaches a 20-mile radius, but on the weekends, people will travel in from as far as Sioux Falls, Sioux City, Iowa, and beyond. According to Waterman, it’s become a destination for motorcyclists who enjoy the scenic drive to Hudson. “We’re in a nice location—if you’re coming from the south, you’re coming up Highway 12 which is pretty scenic, and if you’re coming from the north, you come down through Newton Hills which is also a nice ride,” he said. And once they arrive, the Waddy’s menu has more than enough to satisfy a hungry traveler. “Our appetizer menu is huge,” said Waterman. Popular items include traditional pub fare like steak tips, Waddy’s Wings, burgers, and pizza. But one of the more unique draws to the bar is its famous Chief’s Bloody Mary.

THE NAME COMES FROM WATERMAN’S LONGTIME NICKNAME, WADDY.

“The story is, when we first opened we had this customer who wanted to work a few hours on Sundays fixing Bloody Marys for us,” explained Waterman. “We said, ‘Sure,’ and soon it went from that to him making gallons at a time.” Now you can purchase Chief’s Bloody Mary mix by the jug to take home, or simply enjoy one with your meal. And on Sundays, the savory drink is just $1.75 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Beyond the menu, Waddy’s is known for its activity lineup, which also includes charitable benefits. The bar and grill features traditional offerings like darts, billiards, Texas hold ‘em, karaoke, live music, and sports, but Waddy’s also has two sand volleyball courts with active leagues during the summer months.

7 6 \\\\\\\\\ M AY

In fact, for the last few years Waddy’s has hosted Spike for a Cure; a tournament benefiting a local family whose daughter passed away from cancer. Additionally, the local Pink Ladies darts chapter held a fundraiser, Chase the Queen, at the bar last summer that raised over $360,000 for families suffering from cancer within the Hudson area. Throughout the summer, Waddy’s is also the site of weekend poker runs, which Waterman says is one of their most popular events. Known for its friendly staff, buzzing atmosphere, and tasty Bloody Marys, Waddy’s is worth the summer day trip.

FEELING REJUVENATED FROM THE SHORT BOUT OF SUNSHINE, I GRABBED MY GAS STATION COFFEE, JUMPED IN THE CAR, AND DROVE SOUTH FROM SIOUX FALLS ON I-29 TO ALCESTER. 8 2 \\\\\\\\\ M AY

I began at Arlene’s Sunny Side Cafe. As I walked in, I noticed a group of ladies sitting around a table drinking coffee and talking about the latest goings-on. Right away I knew this was a weekly, if not daily, occurrence at the local eatery. Owner Dan Waag met me and began telling me about the history of Arlene’s. “My mom was working across the street at the Corner Café, and

when the bank bought the land, they moved her over here, which is where it has been since 1994,” said Waag.

Besides pie, Waag swears by the Slider, which is two eggs, hashbrowns, and toast topped with sausage gravy.

After returning home from Montana, Waag teamed up with his sister to keep the restaurant going, homemade pies and all.

“It depends on what time of the day you stop by for the best seller, but I think there is too much variety to pick my favorite,” said Waag.

“Something we do that I don’t think a lot of places do is make our own meringue for our fresh-baked pies,” explained Waag.

Pulling myself away from the stillwarm pumpkin pie, I walked half a block to Your Daily Dose, the Alcester drug store.

What I thought would be a store with cold medicine, greeting cards, and knick-knacks was much more. I made my way to the coffee shop section and found manager Cindy Peterson. Busy making coffee and chatting with locals, she handed me a caramel latte and sat me down to tell me about the store, Alcester, and the community. “This is the place where you can find a little bit of everything—gifts, décor, coffee, floral. You name it,” said Peterson. Besides a coffee shop, Your Daily Dose includes a home décor section, clothing options, a flower shop, and a drug store.

8 4 \\\\\\\\\ M AY

“Our pharmacy acts as a drop-off site, so people from Canton will stop by twice a day to bring medicine to people in the community,” said Peterson. We continued to talk about the new spring items, the adorable baby accessories, and what it means to have a space like this in a small town. “It's just so fun when an elderly group comes in. They share so much and it’s so fun to listen to the stories they tell,” beamed Peterson. Wrapping up and asking her for directions, I took my latte and mosied down Highway 11 to the Alcester Golf Club.

FREE GREENS FEE WEEKEND ARE HELD THE FIRST WEEKENDS OF JUNE, JULY, AND AUGUST.

Pulling into the parking lot, I noticed a couple die-hard linksters before making my way to the clubhouse. Clubhouse manager Kathy Joseph, groundskeeper Dale Jorgensen, and golf course superintendent Landon Nygard invited me to sit down and chat about the course. “It’s a nine-hole course, par 34, and it’s pretty flat with not a lot of hills,” explained Nygard. The three went on to discuss when the golf course originally started, and while an exact year was never pinned down, they all agreed it has been a community staple as long as they can remember.

“There are no tee times, and we just want people to be polite when playing. Now that the weather is nicer, we will start having our leagues; men’s on Tuesdays and women’s on Thursdays,” said Nygard. I marveled at the pictures and plaques that furnished the walls with history and character while Joseph told me about the new clubhouse they are expecting. She explained, “We are due for a new one, and it’s in the works. It will go up by the high school track and we're really excited for the project to begin."•

I GET A HOLIDAY? BY KYLE DETERMAN

T

HERE ARE A LOT OF FIRSTS IN LIFE. YOUR FIRST BIRTHDAY, YOUR FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL, YOUR FIRST KISS. THESE FIRSTS SEEM TO SLOW DOWN AT SOME POINT, FALLING VICTIM TO ROUTINE AND SAFETY. WHICH IS WHY I THINK THIS PARTICULAR FIRST CAUGHT ME OFF GUARD.

We were having our weekly 605 office meeting and the topic of the May item guide came up. It was decided we would do a Mother’s Day theme. The idea seemed to please everyone, and we continued with our meeting. Walking back to our desks, my coworker said, “Hey, it’s your first Mother’s Day. Congrats!” I smiled and stood there, convincing myself it wasn’t that big of a deal. Except, it was. As much as I would love to play the cool, calm, and collected role, that isn’t me. Actually, I'm the exact opposite, and when I realized I would be celebrating Mother’s Day from a different perspective, I was

anything but put together. Thoughts of papier-mâché hearts and breakfast in bed came flooding back as I remembered the care I took when planning the perfect celebration for my own mom. As a child, I took an immense amount of pride in the joy I brought on those Sunday mornings, something I had forgotten about until now. Now, I was the one being celebrated. But how? This day was reserved for caregivers and matriarchs; powerful women that had earned the title of Mom. And while I indeed gave birth (that’s another story) and I have a daughter, I was left feeling undeserving of an entire day dedicated to me.

What I've Learned O Babies don’t always crawl before they walk. Instead of panicking, take their lead and avoid sharp corners.

9 2 \\\\\\\\\ M AY

O It's easy to fall into the “only buy things for baby” trap. Remind yourself that holes are only cute in jeans, and it’s okay to treat yourself to new socks.

O Remember that babies and direct sunlight do not always mix. Before buying sunscreen in bulk, look for samples or smaller bottles to try out on your baby’s skin.

Fast forward to that night. I was nursing Sloan, and as her fingers played with my hair, I couldn’t help but notice the way the glow of her nightlight held the curve of her cheeks, or the curls that had fallen onto her forehead. It was in this moment I realized something that I hope I never forget. Our relationship as mother and daughter goes far beyond our actual kinship. Don’t get me wrong, I love knowing Sloan is the culmination of Reid and I put together; the best parts of each of us. However, that isn’t the only thing that makes her mine. It’s the fact that I'm a different person because of her. I act differently. I think differently. I am different. Gone are the days that my decisions lacked intention, and gone are the days that were spent waiting for what was next. Mainly, gone are the days of not knowing what it's like to be someone’s everything.

Maybe being “worthy” of Mother’s Day doesn’t mean you stuck to your birth plan or it isn’t based on how often you make cookies for teachers. Maybe it means you can sit and stare at your child for hours on end, marveling in their complete and utter sense of wonder. Maybe it means you and your baby can have a lip-bubble making contest until you’re both doubled over laughing. Maybe feeling worthy of being a mom and being celebrated doesn’t mean feeling that way all of the time—and that’s okay. This year will be my first-ever Mother’s Day as a mom, and I'm stoked. Not only do I get another day in the year that lends itself to an extra Starbucks run, but I get to spend it with the coolest baby I know, who also happens to be the reason I am who I am. To the women who have given their hearts to their littles, to the women that are forever changed, and to the women that need a reminder of how much you matter, happy Mother’s Day.•

! KYLE.DETERMAN I always thought I would revel in the idea of waking up to a homemade card or balloons in the kitchen, and while I would absolutely love those, the idea of simply waking up to those bright baby blues is enough.

JR: Bring back a good, "Yo momma!" Every time they have a dig, go with the “yo” or give them the classic, “Yeah, well, your mom!” It'll be a hit!

JR: Have a house-off. Tell her you won’t leave your house until she leaves her house. Worse comes to worst, you can just stay in Position A and watch Netflix.

JR: Send your boyfriend a photo of you in a compromising position and say, “Oops, wrong number.” I bet he’ll totally still feel like it’s harmless!

JW: This person sounds like a real troll. Why don’t you hire a professional insult comic to follow you around and just tell this person that the comic is your friend. Then simply have your comic "friend" torch your troll friend, always ending the sentence with, "Just kidding." They’ll get the picture real quick.

JW: Tell her you're allergic to something in her house. If that doesn’t work, find out what she's allergic to and start hiding some of that in her house. Poof, she’ll want to go out all the time!

JW: He is correct.
