LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER Alana Snyder PUBLISHER Alana Snyder DIRECTOR OF SALES AND MARKETING John Snyder ART DIRECTOR Liz Painter MULTIMEDIA DESIGNER Yany Avelar EDITORIAL ASSISTANT Kyle Determan ACCOUNT MANAGER Taylor Hanson PUBLISHING COPY EDITOR Kristal Seeden

CONTRIBUTORS Kaylyn Deiter Nick Hubbard Tracy Kirby Erin Mairose History. It's very important.

Andrea Van Essen

It's what makes us who we are. 605 showcases different types of

CIRCULATION

history in the October edition, including the "spooky" kind with Alex Johnson's haunted rooms in Rapid City and two paranormal investigations, including the Adams House in Deadwood and the Orpheum Theater in Sioux Falls.

Taija Crawford Annie Fuss Austin Kaus Chad Konrad

There are also historical milestones featured, like the 30th

Coralie Richards

anniversary for the Sioux Falls Skyforce.

Cameron Stalheim

605 literally stepped back in history in this issue at the Mellette House in Watertown, which is the former home of South Dakota's first governor, Arthur C. Mellette.

Brad Zimmerman ADVERTISING INQUIRIES (605) 274-1999 ex. 2

A mark in history for us is the leaving of 605 art director Liz Painter. This is her last issue, as she's moving to Florida in October. We have been through a lot together as a team, including recreating Bone Thugs N Harmony's First of the Month with our own spin, traveling all over the state, and laughing at some of the

sales@605magazine.com CORRESPONDENCE 300 N. Cherapa Place, Suite 504

weirdest moments we'll ever experience (many happening in adidas

Sioux Falls, S.D. 57103

jumpsuits).

(605) 274-1999

We wish her the best and know we'll stay close, and we're excited to introduce our new multimedia designer, Yany Avelar. And don't worry, Liz. We'll blast EDM and club music at 7 a.m. for (at least) 10 minutes during road trips to the Black Hills in your memory.

There’s no question about the Skyforce staying in Sioux Falls, and instead, the move ensures the longevity of the team. The Heat controls basketball operations from players, to coaching, while leaving local ownership responsible for off-the-court management. With the trend of minor basketball leagues heading toward ownership by NBA teams, Greg and Mike said they knew the Heat was where they wanted to be. “Joining the Heat only made it better,” said Mike. “They share the same type of core values, and how they run their team is at the core very similar to the Skyforce.”

In the early days, Greg and his three fellow businessmen knew they had to sell the idea of the team to the Sioux Falls community to gain support. At the time, there was no other sports events teams besides high school teams, making attending a Skyforce game a new experience.

FOR AN ATTRACTION O CHERRY ROCK FARMS 48105 264TH ST.

Fan of farmers’ markets? What if 605 told you that you could go to one daily? Enter Cherry Rock Farms. The fourth generation farm and market has been around since 1925, and pride on local, non-GMO, no pesticides, and all natural produce. “All of our produce is grown naturally. We pick everything fresh daily,” said farmer Laura Patzer. The couple took over the farm from husband Marco’s father, David, four years go, and say they strive to rebuild the name that came before them. “Cherry Rock Farms used to always be a staple in Sioux Falls households, so we’re working hard to attract younger families and anyone who loves fresh produce,” said Laura. The “full-service market” sells a vast amount of fresh produce like tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, zucchini, and seasonal options, like pumpkins and squash. They also offer Splitrock Honey, which you can watch being made as the company has a few hives on the property. Products include honey and beeswax products, like lotion bars. “One thing we’re aiming to make [Cherry Rock Farms] more like a daily farmers’ market,” said Laura. “We’ve heard people say they can’t make it to the market on Saturdays, so we’ve been providing things that people are looking for, like local meats, local milk, granola, honey, and eggs.” Open Tuesday through Friday 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. (605) 582-3783 CHERRYROCKFARMS.COM

A SUPERNATURAL EXPERIENCE

The Adams House BY KAYLYN DEITER

"

THIS ISN’T A SPOOK HOUSE; WE’RE NOT DEALING WITH DEMONS. ALL THE ENERGY PEOPLE EXPERIENCE HERE, AND THAT I’VE EXPERIENCED HERE, IS VERY PLAYFUL, FUNLOVING, AND POSITIVE.” —ROSE SPEIRS

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

ROSE SPEIRS SAYS SHE’S BEEN SPOKEN TO BY A SPIRIT.

Each October since 2012, the communications director for the historic Adams House in Deadwood has helped give paranormal tours of the Queen Anne-style home for guests looking to experience something supernatural. One evening while giving a tour, Speirs left the second floor master bedroom and heard a question directed her way as she walked into the hallway.

“I heard an older lady ask, ‘Where’s Rose going?’” said Speirs. “Everyone on the tour heard it too, and no one had asked the question. I’m a believer that there’s energy in that house.” Built in 1892 by Harris and Anna Franklin, the Adams House has a turbulent history involving two prominent Deadwood families.

BISON EVENT THURSDAY, OCTOBER 18TH 5-8PM WITH

In 1903 Anna died and lay in state in the home’s parlor. Harris then sold the house to his son Nathan for $1, who raised his family among the modern 19th century amenities and oak interiors. By 1920 Nathan decided to sell the house to his adversary in the Deadwood mayoral race, W.E. Adams. Adams lived in the home until 1934 when he suffered a stroke and died on the property. Though the Adams House may have been witness to its fair share of death, Speirs believes the energy present in the home comes from the Franklins' and Adams’ love of life and people, not the tragedies that befell them later. “Those families were entertainers,” said Speirs. “The Franklins even had an orchestra play sometimes. There were always so many people in that house, and an energy is left behind from those lives.”

That energy, as Speirs calls it, has been documented by Black Hills Paranormal Investigations, a team of half skeptics, half believers who volunteer with the Adams House paranormal tours. “On their equipment they’ve recorded someone yelling ‘fire’ in the smoking room, where there was actually a fire on Anna and Harris’ 25th anniversary,” said Speirs. “They’ve picked up child-sized shadows peeking around corners in the library, footsteps going up and down the stairs, perfume and cigar smells in the smoking room.” For three weekends in October, Speirs, the Adams House team, and members of Black Hills Paranormal Investigations take groups of 30 people on evening tours of the house. One group explores the first floor, while the other is taken to the second. Two paranormal investigators join each tour group.

O A SUPERNATURAL EXPERIENCE: ADAMS HOUSE CONT. The paranormal teams hand out equipment to tour-goers, and guests get to use the equipment and report on what they’re experiencing. “You never know what’s going to happen,” said Speirs. “Sometimes nothing happens, but our guests love using the equipment—smelling the smells, hearing the voices—it gives them something to base their belief on or decide if it’s not real.” Speirs says she’s seen people who are skeptics completely change while on an Adams House paranormal tour, and guests who already consider themselves believers become fascinated with the house and its history. “I’ve only had four people leave because they were really scared in the six years I’ve been doing this,” said Speirs. “The first time I went on a tour in 2010, I was terrified. As we started to do it more I became more comfortable and began to really enjoy the experience.” The paranormal tours are now Speirs’ favorite tours of the year.

“It’s about unraveling the whole story of this house,” said Speirs. “The tours are fun and entertaining, but people also come back to see how beautiful the house is. What a win for Deadwood history.” FOR MORE INFORMATION ON THE ADAMS HOUSE AND THEIR PARANORMAL TOURS, VISIT DEADWOODHISTORY.COM.

ARTHUR AND MARGARET MELLETTE

S

tep back into 1885 in the historic home of South Dakota’s first governor, Arthur Calvin Mellette, and former first lady, Margaret Wylie Mellette, on Prospect Hill in Watertown. The couple, who had four boys, built the Italianate-style home when the area was technically still Dakota Territory (Arthur was governor of Dakota Territory before South Dakota became a state on November 2, 1889).

The family occupied the house well known for its architecture for 10 years and, according to guide Pam Raeder, it was later condemned in 1943. “The Mellette Memorial Association, which was citizen-formed, bought it for $500 in 1944 to keep it from being torn down,” she said. Charles, their last remaining son, heard the news and contacted the association to donate some of his parents' possessions. “That’s how we got original pieces,” continued Raeder. “In fact, anything with a gold cord is original.”

THE OIL PAINTING OF THE MELLETTE BOYS, ANTON, DICK, WYLIE, AND CHARLES, WAS DONE BY MAGGIE.

O THE DOUBLE PARLOR One of the most important spaces was the double parlor, which hosted a lot of elegant get-togethers and political events. It showcases how the home is a mix of originals and other furniture and decor donated by people in the community. Raeder says the home started getting renovated in the ‘50s, and that is when people started moving from ancestral homes and started building ranch style. “They had this big old furniture that didn’t fit in newer homes and nobody wanted it,” said Raeder. “We just make sure it’s from the same time period, so nothing is newer than 1895. Like this desk is not the Mellettes', but it is from an older home in Watertown.”

“THEY WERE VICTORIAN, SO HANG ON TO YOUR HATS.” - PAM ON ETIQUETTE

There is a blown up photograph in the double parlor of the Mellettes' anniversary party in 1889, which shows some of the surrounding furniture and pieces. While the Steinway Piano isn’t original to the house, it was made in 1863 and is the older Square Grand model, which is a style they did own and is in the photo (that style of piano was discontinued in 1888). “They had about 200 people in this house,” she said. A parlor was the most formal room in a home and was mainly meant for entertaining. This large room is right off of the original entrance, and Raeder says back in the day you would never enter through the parlor. One jaw-dropping detail in the home is the spiral staircase in the entrance, which goes all the way up through the tower. “An Italianate home has the tower, which serves absolutely no purpose whatsoever, but it’s just there,” said Raeder. “The stairs literally go up to nothing at the top.”

O THE OFFICE Right off of the original entrance is the library and office where the former governor would work, as there was no state capitol building at the time. One of the highlights is an oil painting of a woman. Raeder says this is a self portrait of Margaret, or “Maggie,” who enjoyed painting. “Maggie was a very talented artist,” said Raeder.

BEHIND THE MASTER BEDROOM’S HEADBOARD IS AN INSCRIPTION THAT SAYS “WATERTOWN, S.D.” WITH THE NAME OF THE ORIGINAL STORE IT WAS PURCHASED FROM.

O THE BEDROOMS There are four bedrooms in the Mellette home. “We have no idea who slept where. Everybody always says, ‘Who slept where?’ Who knows? They didn’t write it down, it wasn’t important,” said Raeder. The northwest bedroom, which has an original walnut furniture set, would get very cold in the winter, so much so that Raeder says they would shut this room off in the winter.

There are several original items in the master bedroom, including the headboard, a small rocker handmade by governor’s grandfather, and a hot chocolate set. The smaller rocker in the room was Maggie’s and has no arms. “Women did not like to have arms on their chairs because of their long dresses,” she said. “With it armeless, your dress would fall a little more naturally and not get as wrinkled.

Can you imagine ironing those dresses? I wouldn’t want arms, either.” There are a handful of original outfits the Mellettes wore, including Maggie’s First Lady gown she wore to the second inaugural ball on January 6, 1894, which shows she was around five feet tall. The next bedroom displays the rope springs used in bed furniture.

“That’s where the saying ‘sleep tight, don’t let the bed bugs bite’ came from, because the ropes would become loose and you would need to tighten them back in the day,” said Raeder. The last bedroom showcases more furniture that was time period appropriate, like the wardrobe for clothing and a wash bowl for nighttime grooming.

Raeder has a theory that they must have had help because of all of their gatherings. “They had to have had help because of the size of their anniversary party, for example. And May 1 of 1887, Maggie had 100 of her friends here for tea. One hundred people.”

“Ice was very valuable back then,” she said.

HOTEL ALEX JOHNSON PLAYS HOST TO FOUR GHOSTS, COUNTLESS MYSTERIES BY ANDREA VAN ESSEN PHOTOGRAPHY BY HUBBARD VISUALS

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// DOMICO RODRIGUEZ HAS NEVER SEEN A GHOST. And for someone in his position, that’s actually surprising. “It’s just not really my thing,” said Rodriguez, who serves as the general manager of the historic— and supposedly haunted—Hotel Alex Johnson in downtown Rapid City. It is, however, many of the Alex Johnson’s guests’ “thing.”

Opened in 1928, the hotel celebrates its 90th anniversary this year. With nearly a century’s worth of guests, events, and even presidential visits, the Alex Johnson is regarded as one of the most historic hotels in America. But that isn’t its only claim to fame. Consistently listed as one of the most haunted hotels in South Dakota, the Alex Johnson even offers a paranormal package. For an additional $70 fee, you can

4 6 \\\\\\\\\ O C T O B E R

book one of the hotel’s haunted rooms on the eighth floor. “[Room] 812 is considered the haunted room, if you will,” said Rodriguez. “But there have been reports about 802 and 804, too.” According to numerous guest accounts and tales, and one very real crime scene photo, the eighth floor plays host to four spirits. The first, and perhaps the most well known, is the Lady in White.

Number of Ghosts: 4 EE ALEX JOHNSON EE THE LADY IN WHITE EE THE JILTED BRIDE EE THE YOUNG GIRL (ALEX JOHNSON’S NIECE)

C U LT U R E + E N T E R TA I N M E N T

Rumor has it, a bride threw herself from the window of her eighth floor room after she was left at the altar. Guests have reported seeing a shadowy white figure roaming the halls, which they can only assume is the “ghost bride.”

The SyFy channel’s Ghost Hunters even paid the Alex Johnson a visit back in 2011 to test the claims (Season 7, Episode 5, if you’re interested). But, according to Rodriguez, much of the hotel’s spookiness simply comes from its age.

A similar instance—and the only verified tale— “This place is creepy because it’s old,” said concerns another jilted bride who hung herself from the telephone cord in her eighth floor room. Rodriguez. And that one’s confirmed. Rodriguez was shown the crime scene photo (property of the Rapid City Police Department) when he was hired. The other spirits are said to be those of Alex Johnson himself, and a young girl said to be his niece, who died at a young age of an incurable disease. Rodriguez says the young girl is one of the most commonly reported supernatural phenomena. “People say they hear kids running up and down the hall,” said Rodriguez. “Well, we don’t have a lot of kids that stay here, particularly not young children. But that’s one of the things that they often talk about. They hear them playing in the hallway.”

And he’s not wrong. The nearly 100-year-old building certainly has its quirks. Two rooms on the third floor—the only guest rooms on that floor, in fact—lack full windows, making them eerily dark. That same floor used to function as Alex Johnson’s personal living quarters. “There’s just a lot of odd things about the way those rooms are set up,” said Rodriguez. But the structure offers something even stranger than a few unusually dark hotel rooms. According to Rodriguez, downtown Rapid City used to be connected by a series of underground tunnels.

No one is entirely certain of the tunnels’ purpose, but speculations have ranged from the utilitarian—coal depositories—to the thrilling—passageways for drunken party-goers. While no longer in use, likely due to heavy flooding in the mid-20th century, the tunnels do connect to the Alex Johnson. Upon descending into the hotel’s basement, one is met with a series of narrow hallways and oddlyshaped rooms. “When our ownership bought this, we opened up a lot of different spaces that weren’t available before, and no one can really figure out what they are,” said Rodriguez. A room with drains in the cement floor has sparked the idea of an underground barber shop, where, rumor has it, the barber slit a patron’s throat. Another room has been touted as a gentlemen’s lounge, and a

set of stairs with no apparent destination offers added mystery to these strange spaces beneath the hotel’s lobby. “There’s just a lot of things that can’t be explained about this place, and there aren’t any people around who know for sure,” says Rodriguez. Blueprints exist only for the upstairs portion of the hotel, with no mention of the underground. But Rodriguez isn’t particularly phased by the rumors or the mysterious spaces. For him, the eeriness comes from talking with guests who have experienced supernatural events in the hotel. “Mostly it’s just people’s reactions to it,” says Rodriguez. One man in particular, visited the front desk and shared his story of hearing footsteps in his room and feeling someone sit down on the bed in the middle of the night.

“I started to get chills,” says Rodriguez. A journal sits at the front desk, where guests are welcome to share their experiences with the supernatural. Entries include everything from seeing figures reflected in the mirror, to doors, drawers and cupboards opening in the middle of the night, and a chilling, common report of the feeling of someone’s hands pressing down on their body in the night. Anyone eager to experience a taste of the supernatural can visit the hotel’s lobby and page through the guestbook. Those brave enough to stay on the eighth floor can inquire about the Paranormal Package. But don’t get too excited. Halloween night is often booked months in advance. “I LOVE GHOST STORIES, GHOST MOVIES, GHOST HUNTING TV SHOWS, AND THE CONCEPT OF GHOSTS,” HE CONTINUED, “BUT WHAT I DON’T LIKE IS HOW IT MAKES MY RESEARCH AND PEOPLE’S EXPERIENCES SEEM EASILY DEBUNKABLE, OR EVEN HOKEY. THERE IS NOTHING HOKEY ABOUT THE PARANORMAL.” Instead, he prefers to call it a “paranormal investigation.” Colin, who hosts and produces the YouTube series The Paranormal Files, flew back to his hometown from Texas (he’s currently a full time film student at the University of Texas at Austin) to investigate the historical Orpheum Theater downtown and to film an episode. His show, which recently hit over 23,000 subscribers, posts two new episodes a week that showcase his unique experiences with the unknown. While most of the filming takes place in the United States, Colin has conducted paranormal investigations internationally in places like England and Costa Rica, and most recently in Romania. 605’s team met up with Colin at the Orpheum on a Saturday evening in September. Colin says he likes to meet right around nightfall, so we arrived at 7 p.m. We were greeted by SMG Sioux Falls director of sales and public relations Rick Huffman, who explained that not many have had this opportunity since it’s owned by the city.

“I suppose since it’s a city building, previous decision makers didn’t want people to think it was

52

haunted. I’m not quite sure,” he said. “But this time there was no issue, and we’re happy to have you here.” Colin arrived and was joined by his father, Jeff, and mother, Mary, who were there to assist with gear. His co-host and girlfriend, Payton McWhorter, was unable to join the investigation. Huffman, who has been with SMG Sioux Falls for over six years, has heard many versions of ghostly sightings and stories and would act as our guide for the evening. We moved from the newer foyer addition back outside to re-enter through the original entrance under the glowing Orpheum sign. As we walked through the doors, Colin began filming for the interview portion. Huffman gave some background on the oldest existing theater in Sioux Falls, which was built in 1913. John and Frank Solari designed the 1,000-seat Orpheum to be a “state-of-the-art theater” for staging vaudeville. It was sold several times over the years, and remained a vaudeville house until 1927 when it was sold to Minnesota Amusement Co., who converted it into a B-movie and second run theater. It was then purchased by the Sioux Falls Community Playhouse (SFCP) in 1954 until the city took it over. It now houses Sioux Empire Community Theatre productions, as well as Sioux Falls Jazz & Blues Society performances, and other special concerts and events.

THE MEL METER

WATCH THE PARANORMAL FILES EPISODE FEATURING 605 AND THE ORPHEUM ON COLIN’S YOUTUBE CHANNEL ON OCTOBER 6.

The MEL Meter was developed by Gary Galka, who built this device in honor of his daughter, Melissa, who passed away in a tragic car accident at a young age. He claims that even though she is dead, she continues to visit him every day. The device basically measures electromagnetic energy levels in the environment, which is the type of energy that many paranormal researchers believe that spirits both emit and use to manifest activity. That is why, for example, your flashlight or camera may die while investigating. This energy, or these “entities,” may be drawing out that energy from your equipment and using it to appear, speak a word, or possibly do something even more sinister.

THE SB7 SPIRIT BOX The “Spirit Box” is a device that we have achieved much success with over the years, but I sometimes am skeptical of it. In layman’s terms, the device scans rapidly through radio frequencies (either AM or FM) in either an ascending or descending order. Many paranormal researchers believe that since the human ear can't hear sounds in a vast portion of the audio frequency spectrum, we could possibly hear the spirit's voice by tapping into these frequencies.

THE REM POD In contrast to the MEL meter, the REM Pod actually emits an electromagnetic field of its own, which supposedly can detect the approach of a spiritual entity. When something disturbs the control value of this field, the light brightens on the side from which the disturbance is currently being recorded. There is also an on-board alarm which sounds when the temperature deviates either above or below the baseline temp that you set upon turning on the device.

THE SLS CAMERA The SLS Camera uses an RGB camera with an on-board depth sensor and infrared light projector in addition to a monochrome CMOS sensor, which sees everything not as a flat image, but as dots arranged in a 3D environment. Simply put, the device uses an Xbox Kinect camera system as its camera, which can see and detect objects and shapes in both darkness and light. Back to technical talk, these thousands of infrared dots allow the camera to "see" depth and detail; basically like a sonar. The installed software on the rig that we purchased is automatically programmed to recognize people by distinguishing body parts, joints, and movements. When it detects these body parts, it stitches them together on-screen into the shape of a figure. According to other researchers, if the camera shows a person-shaped object on the screen that you can't see with the naked eye, then there is something there that the IR is detecting. That the programing is recognizing it as a human shape based on body parts and joints. 53

The Lost Graves of Sioux Falls Colin plans to release his full-length documentary, The Lost Graves of Sioux Falls, in mid October, covering the large number of lost graves and “disrespected burial grounds” that surround the Sioux Falls area. Colin explained, “At the end of the film, we end up investigating a guy's house that was built on the Old Fort Dakota Cemetery grounds in the downtown area, where we theorize that some bones and/or bodies may possibly still remain.”

54

Our group proceeded to the auditorium, which now seats around 700, depending on the show. We walked to the front of the stage, where Huffman began telling us about the different versions of the Orpheum spirit, “Larry.” He motioned up to the balcony and said, “The balcony is the scene of probably the most famous, or the most often repeated, ghost story that we’ve ever come across.” A popular tale goes that in 1959 a gentleman who was well known at the time had a radio

show and did a lot of community theater at the Orpheum. He was there late one night performing when the script called for him to deliver a line to the “sky.” “As he delivered the line and looked up into the balcony, he saw a growing blue, bright light, and the apparition of a male was in that light,” said Huffman. “He said the male apparition appeared to be either waving at him or motioning him to come up the balcony, and he left.”

Investigation Highlights

Rick said, “Yes, exactly. There’s a lot of different versions of that story, but what ties it into a lot of people is that there was a story of back in the days when this was a movie theater there was two storefronts on the front of the building. Above that were two apartments. The theater manager at the time lived in one of those apartments and was having an affair with a married woman.”

COLD SENSATIONS As the investigation started, we were all sweating. Colin placed a MEL Meter on the stairs on the balcony, and as he started talking, the light went crazy and malfunctioned. Suddenly everyone was freezing and had goosebumps. The cold sensation happened a handful of times during the night.

A PERSONAL CONNECTION Whatever we experienced was drawn to Taylor Hanson, 605’s account manager. Colin gave her the REM Pod, which flew up to 9.4 (a high) at one point, which sent her over the edge and she began to get emotional. The SLS Camera picked up a large body figure directly to her right as this happened. Colin consoled her, and as the REM Pod number went to 0, she was back to normal. She is still trying to digest what happened.

UNDER THE STAGE There was a dramatic moment when Colin stepped under the stage floor with Mary filming. Suddenly he yelled, and they both looked terrified as he pointed at something. His mother shook her head, “Yes," in agreement. Then a noise was heard by everyone across the hall, as if someone ran across past us. The feeling of a presence there was then lost, and we all felt it.

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

“The next morning, the staff of the community playhouse came in and discovered that all the newly wired fusing in the building had been blown out,” said Huffman. “And the guess is that maybe the apparition had become angry that this gentleman had just left so suddenly and wasn’t willing to communicate with him at all.”

“He left him hanging,” said Colin.

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Huffman says the man was instantly hit by an icy-cold blast, sending him to quickly grab the keys and lock the door before he left.

HERE ARE JUST SNIPPETS OF WHAT HAPPENED DURING THE INVESTIGATION, WHICH MOSTLY OCCURRED WITH THE LIGHTS OFF.

“I couldn’t even tell you how many reports of people who have been working or rehearsing looked up into what used to be a light booth for productions here, where they’ve seen somebody standing up there; a male. It’s always a male.” - Rick

“The husband killed the theater manager. The thinking is that this male apparition was that theater manager coming back to either try to connect with people or exact his revenge. We don’t know for sure,” said Rick, as we all looked in awe. Colin asked, “But that actually happened, like a recorded murder?” “Not that I’m aware of,” said Huffman. He then described how the name Larry came about. “Eventually, the ghost, so to speak, developed a name. We don’t know where the name came from or who gave it to him, but his name is Larry,” he said. “And to this day there are people who say that they have seen Larry at least as an apparition or have felt his presence here in the building when they’ve been here. I’ve done a lot of shows here and know a lot of people who have had experiences in the building on stage, down in the basement where the greenroom and the dressing rooms are.” It’s there that a lot of people have reported things that have “bothered them,” and some have been frightened. Huffman then talked about a personal acquaintance who was working there. “He was a staff member in the community playhouse at the time. And he was cleaning up the stage after a performance one night so it was ready to go the next day, and he was sweeping across the stage here, and he felt something and turned around. On the floor, where he just had finished sweeping, there was a picture laying there that had not been there because he had just swept that area,” he said. Huffman continued, “And he reached down and lifted up the picture, and it was a picture of a male, an older black and white picture. It wasn’t very big. He was kind of freaked out by it. He set it down on the light board and went to get somebody, and when they came back the picture was gone.” There are also whispers of a worker dying during the building’s construction. Another talk is of someone who hanged himself for not getting a role he wanted in a play. In the ‘70s,

there was allegedly a janitor who died, and Larry could also be that person coming back to haunt the theater. I, myself, heard that version. I asked, “Something fell on him from the stage, right?” “Yes, they used sandbags to help with set pieces and backdrops, and the pulley system wasn’t being used at the time and a sandbag had come down and landed on his head and it killed him right then on the spot,” said Huffman. I shared my Larry the janitor story. My sister, Holly, and I were in a ‘90s SFCP production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and we were exiting stage right during rehearsal. A speaker fell from the top of stage, barely missing her head, and the corner of it sliced down her cheek. People rushed to make sure she was okay, and then the room started buzzing about Larry. It just so happened that it was picture week, and she sported a badass mark for her fourth grade photo. We then walked by the set production room, where Huffman explained there have been accidents, but none tied to the paranormal. Going downstairs, we saw the greenroom and the two dressing rooms. We then went in the basement hallway where there are thousands of signatures (including mine) of past performers. Huffman said, “It’s pretty common for people who do shows that they like to write their name on the wall and what show it was, you know, like Annie 2006, or something like that.” “There’s a lot of energy on the wall,” said Colin. There definitely was, and it’s down there that Colin says local psychic medium Donna O’Dea vows she’ll never return from the experience she had. Colin asked, “Has anyone ever been pushed down here?” “I don’t know about pushed. I know physical feelings; physical contact that might have been pushes that might have just been touches or something like that,” said Huffman. ”I have heard different descriptions of it where people have felt something touch them down

D

In this version, her husband came down to the theater one night and “caught them in the act.” A fight ensued, and it spilled into the balcony.

The Browen Home When Colin was a teenager, the Browens moved into a new home, which was built on previously undeveloped land. After living in the building for less than a week, Colin says his family was convinced it was haunted. They heard a lot of voices, were seeing shadow figures in his bedroom, and he says his sister tried to climb out of her window when everyone else in the family was gone because she thought that there were men in the hallway outside of her room. “This culminated in us having Donna O’Dea (who I have gone on to work with many times) come into the house and cleanse it from the negative energy,” said Colin. Colin and his mother went down to the courthouse to conduct research with the historians there on the history of the land the house was built on. “They believed that it belonged to a pioneer family; sadly I can’t remember their names,” he explained. “When we looked deeper, the mother and daughter had death and burial records. They were buried in a cemetery in a different town. However, the father and son had no death or burial records. Did they die in a farming accident on the farm, or from a sudden bout of disease and were they buried in shallow graves on the property?” They believe building on the property may have “stirred up” the spirits. What was truly stirred up was the family’s fascination with the unexplained, leading them into their current paranormal investigations.

here on various parts of the upper body; the shoulders, the back, the head, things like that." One thing Huffman believes is that Larry isn’t downstairs. “It’s something darker. Larry, I don’t think, has necessarily always had a negative vibe about him. If anything, I would say maybe Larry has had more of a lighter or less frightening kind of aspect other than just the shock of, ‘Oh my, I think I just saw that.’ There's nothing sinister or attacking about him. It’s been down here where the frights seem to come from.” Our last stops were the balcony and former projection room, which is now used for storage. It was in the

58

projection room that it began to feel hot. I noticed sweat started to bead on Colin’s forehead, and my cheeks started to feel red from the mugginess. John Snyder, 605’s director of sales and marketing, walked by an amplifier and noticed the light was on. He asked, “Should this be on?” “No, it shouldn't be. No one is ever up here,” said Huffman. Snyder tried several times and then realized it wasn’t connected to anything. Huffman said nervously, “Oh, that’s interesting. Power when there shouldn’t be power...”

Finally, the light went dim. As we chatted about the room that has had the most sightings of Larry, I was looking directly at Colin as he turned off his camera and began asking Rick a question. Suddenly, a metal pole leaning against the wall behind him with other poles flung across to another wall. Everyone came to a halt. Colin asked me, “I didn’t move an inch, you saw that, right?” “Yeah,” I said, totally dumbfounded. There was no reason it would fall that far even if anyone had touched it. “Why did I turn my camera off? That

happens more often than you think,” he said, shaking his head. After our walk-through, it was time for Colin to film the investigation portion of his episode of The Paranormal Files for his YouTube channel. He describes his show’s style as a mix between Mythbusters and the The Blair Witch Project, and now I see why. Reference the page 55's sidebar for highlights, and watch the episode that premieres October 6. Let’s just say... we’re all believers. Touché, Larry. OTHE MOST RECENT SIGHTING The team was brought to the box seats, or loge boxes. Huffman told the most recent story, which happened to an actor in Spamalot a few years back. “These boxes aren’t used anymore for audience seating. They tend to be left alone unless spotlights or set pieces are up here or, depending on the theater production, they might place an actor up here to deliver some lines,” he said. The actor had arrived in the box and stood behind the curtain until it was time for his scene. “He felt someone tugging on him, and he thought he was being told he was coming on too soon,” said Huffman. “He looked and no one was there, and he said he kept his wits about him during his performance and then went downstairs and asked around who did it. No one admitted it, and it was at that time that it hit him and sent shivers down his spine.”

O URBAN CHISLIC

\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

I

BY ALANA SNYDER

431 W. 85th St., Sioux Falls //// (605) 275-6328 // urbanchislic.com

t’s been a good year for chislic.

TRY IT:

The traditional cubed red meat became the official state “nosh” this past March. In July, thousands flocked to Freeman for the inaugural South Dakota Chislic Festival. Then, in August, the restaurant Urban Chislic opened its doors at 85th Street and Minnesota Avenue next to Wal-Mart in Sioux Falls.

We didn’t get to them, but these items are on our list for next time… CHISLIC MIX-AND-MATCH THE 1870 Original mutton chislic on skewer with garlic salt served with saltine crackers.

THE MARATHON BOWL

In true “new restaurant” fashion, rumors started flying about before many even stepped foot in the building.

“Is it any good?”

Choice of protein (mini sized chislic) served over penne pasta with marinara or alfredo sauce, sprinkled with fresh parmesan and garlic salt. Served with toast.

STARTERS

“I heard it’s terrible. It’s just another fast food place.”

“Someone’s cousin’s uncle said they hated how the chislic was cooked.”

SPICY STRING BEANS Garlic battered and fried with a hint of spice. Choice of ranch or horseradish remoulade.

“There’s pork and chicken chislic, someone told me. How are pork and chicken chislic?!”

Holy moly, people. In an attempt to help everyone cool their jets, some of the 605 team stopped by to see for ourselves.

PORK WONTONS Pork and vegetable wontons served over steamed rice with Thai Chili sauce.

STENSLAND FAMILY CHEESE CURD Traditional cheese curd, locally sourced. Choice of ranch or horseradish remoulade. Choice of regular or garlic breading.

The three amigos (art director Liz Painter and 605’s new multimedia designer Yany Avelar) WHILE SOME THINK URBAN CHISLIC IS A FRANCHISE, IT’S NOT… YET.

SIDES

CHISLIC FRIES Golden brown shoestring potatoes and UC house seasoning.

MOM’S BAKED BEANS Homemade recipe with added liquid smoke flavor prepared with UC beef chislic bites.

SIGNATURES

CHISLIC ENTREE SALAD Snappy slaw blend and romaine lettuce with shredded cheese, tomato, onion, cucumbers, bell peppers, and olives with choice of dressing. Choice of: Beef, Chicken, Pork, or Lamb.

GRILLED CHICKEN SALAD SANDWICH Grilled chicken breast with lettuce, tomato, and onion with honey mustard. Gluten-free bun available upon request.

O URBAN CHISLIC CONT.

pulled up and the building did remind me a bit of Qdoba-style. We walked in, and were greeted at the host stand. Immediately you notice the custom graffiti art covering the walls on both sides of the room.

options to choose from, along with wine, beer, and cocktail menus.

anything, I would give you a, “Hell, nah.” We also chose the Chislic Nachos, The Smashed Burger, and the Bacon Bit Chislic Sundae, which all were recommended by the server.

But then she said, “I feel like it’s masculine, but not overdone. I would come here.”

Off the bat, we ordered three drinks: the Hillbilly Lemonade, the Urban Mojito, and The Bamba. The Hillbilly Lemonade had Canadian Wicket, Premium Blend Triple Sec, and Finest Call Sweet and Sour. La Bamba had Tequesta, Premium Blend Triple Sec, pineapple and orange juice. The Urban Chislic Mojito had Rhumbero and Finest Call Mojito Mix. All were refreshing, but our favorite was the lemonade.

Our server quickly came by and explained the ropes. If you want chislic, you can order a regular or a large, and you pick a meat (beef, lamb, pork, chicken, or vegetarian), pick between nine “rubs” (i.e. Sea Salt), and pick between 18 sauces (i.e. Thai Chili).

The table also discovered that I wasn’t the only one who wasn’t upfront that I didn’t like garlic parmesan.

Then came the hard part of choosing which food items to try. We had to do Lamb Chislic, because, duh. It comes with kettle chips, but we had the option to substitute it with steamed white rice, mashed potatoes, or snappy greens blend. The trio went with kettle chips.

If chislic isn’t your thing (hello, why are you here?), then you have other options, like sandwiches and burgers.

Just so we didn’t get too crazy, we chose House Seasoning (which the server described as a light, salty onion powder) and Garlic Parmesan sauce. I went with the group consensus, but if you asked me at Buffalo Wild Wings if I wanted garlic parmesan

I was also shocked to see a bar, and there were a lot of flat screen TVs throughout the space. “So many TVs,” said Liz as we sat down at a table.

I was very impressed with the wide selection of dishes. This was legit sit-down dining with plenty of unique

6 8 \\\\\\\\\ O C T O B E R

First came the chislic, which was served in an adorable bowl sitting atop the kettle chips. It was so salty and delicious, especially with the dipping sauce, which I was surprised how much I liked.

Yany casually mentioned, “I’m usually not into garlic parmesan flavors, but this isn’t overwhelming. I actually like it.” And of course to be as Midwest as our dish, we realized we were all being “Midwest nice” and thought it was what the other person wanted. But we liked it, so huzzah passive behavior! We all agreed the chislic was a little “lamby” without the sauce. But, hey, it’s lamb.

“It’s a good, classic chislic,” said Liz. The only problem were the chips—or I should say the presentation. By the time we got to the chips, they were getting soggy. Sometimes having chislic juice on them was delightful, but mostly they were just soggy. If we found a crispy one, it was a treat. Mayhaps it’s best to serve them on a plate, even if it’s not as cute? Or maybe we should just eat faster. I would be really interested in trying it with the steamed white rice.

“This was honestly a ‘bar napkin’ idea where we were all brainstorming and it slowly came to life.” - Co-Owner & Operator Hong Phrommany

Next up, the nachos. This consisted of house fried tortilla chips smothered in white queso and colby jack cheese with fresh fried mini chislic. It was topped with pico de gallo, black olives, fresh jalapeños, black beans, sour cream, and guacamole with a choice

O URBAN CHISLIC CONT.

CHISLIC IS GERMAN FOR THE WORD MEANING "SNACK."

NEW DESSERT FEATURES Our server checked on us and said, “Hey, you know we just taste-tested our newest desserts. They’re not even out yet, do you want to try them?” Uh, duh. The Cookie Butter Tart and Banana Swirl Cake came out. Both were served with a side of maple bourbon pecan ice cream. Let’s just say I was told I had to share.

of chicken or beef. We chose chicken. It was a hit for many reasons. For me? The abundance of black olives. For Liz? The fresh tomatoes. For Yany? The seasoning. “I like the zest they put on it,” said Yany. “It has a lime flavor.” We kind of put off The Smashed Burger until last because it was a burger – a double burger with smashed and caramelized allbeef patties grilled, to be exact. I cut it into fours, and we all took a bite at the same time. “This is so frickin’ good,” I said with my mouth full.

“This is like Burger Time good,” said Liz.

drizzled with Sweet Hot Ness sauce.

Yany was quiet because she was chewing. She’s new, she’ll eventually just talk with her mouth full or make confusing noises sometimes with certain meals. All in due time.

The sauce came on the side, and Liz drizzled it over the dish.

“That’s really good,” she finally stated. We all looked at the fourth bite and all played it off like, “I’m cool, I’m good.” I’m still mad I didn’t eat it. To put a bow on our lunch, we had the sundae. This had vanilla bean ice cream topped with bacon bit chislic and was

“This tastes like breakfast,” she said with the first bite. She was right. It tasted like smokey bacon and maple syrup. The bacon was very thick and made me nervous, but the ladies said it was really good. It’s a rich dessert, so sharing would be ideal, in my opinion. As we left, I made a “dad joke” about needing a wheelchair to leave from being so full. I was only half kidding.

BOTTOM LINE: It’s in a newer, growing side of Sioux Falls, and this is a great option for a cocktail, to watch sports, or to grab a quick bite to eat. “It's like a sports bar, but with better food,” said Liz. And I agree with her. There are options that aren’t just greasy foods that will make you leaving with a gut ache. I shall return.

I really liked it in there. When you first walk in you’re wondering if you’re entering a food chain, but it’s a full restaurant with a bar and all. I really think the custom graffiti art was a smart touch as well, especially with a lot of “605” being sprinkled into the piece so you know it’s local. It’s small, but it works for the type of business.

Most of the options range from $7-$11. It's a great deal, especially for the portion sizes. You’ll leave stuffed without breaking the bank.

Everything was very good. You know it’s a good problem when you’re debating which one you liked best. The chislic with the sauce is delicious, the ladies raved about the nachos, and I’m seriously going back for a burger. I need to try their wings, too.

NEW BREWERIES CONTINUE SOUTH DAKOTA'S BOOMING BEER CULTURE BY KAYLYN DEITER

TWO NEW COMPANIES SOLIDIFY THE BLACK HILLS AS A CRAFT BEER DESTINATION.

7 2 \\\\\\\\\ O C T O B E R

Dakota Point Brewing in Rapid City and Mount Rushmore Brewing Co. in Custer both opened their doors earlier this year, tapping into community locals and visitors alike. “We’re not in the beer business, we’re in the people business,” said Dave Eddy, founder and head brewer at Dakota Point. “Breweries are a great place to meet old and new friends, to come and hang out. That’s the atmosphere we’re going for.” Eddy opened the Rapid City brewery back in June with two friends, Neal Schlottman and Jim Boulter. Though none of the three had ever owned a brewery before, their separate skillsets came together to create Dakota Point’s relaxed, pub-like atmosphere. “I did home brewing while I was living in Denver, and these two guys have been in construction and business,” said Eddy. "But we all love beer. I can’t think of a better thing to base a brewery off of than that.”

According to Eddy, Boulter serves as the hype man in the taproom while Schlottman takes care of the business end at Dakota Point. Eddy’s sweet spot is in the brewing. Everything on the menu is made on site using a seven-barrel brewing system, with a focus on English, Irish, Scottish, and American ales. “I saw a lot of this kind of craft beer style in those Denver pubs,” said Eddy. “I wanted to bring that up here. I’m glad I got to do that.” Dakota Point doesn’t currently distribute any of its beer outside the brewery, but Eddy says plans are in the works to sell Dakota Point kegs to restaurants—the kegs are even purchased, sitting ready to be filled—but the brewery isn’t looking to can or bottle their beer. “We just want to be part of the craft beer scene here,” said Eddy. “We’re going to grow, but right now being

An avid craft beer lover who’s dabbled in home brewing, Ehrlich says she immediately knew she wanted to work at Mount Rushmore Brewing after it opened this past Memorial Day. “It’s going really well,” said Ehrlich. “It was kind of a slow and confusing start, but we really have an incredible staff.

It’s hard to believe it’s already Fall.” As the only brewery in Custer, Ehrlich says she wasn’t sure what to expect as far as who would show up to drink their beer. And so in not focusing on just one demographic, Mount Rushmore Brewing was able to attract them all.

“We knew the type of clientele we wanted to have—people with kids, dogs, families,” said Ehrlich. “But we really have something for everyone here—beer, but also wine and liquor— and I think people can see that.” Ehrlich says Mount Rushmore Brewing works to make their beer

more sessionable, or easier to drink, than a typical brewery. This means their beers go down smoothly and have a clean finish. “We want it to be easy for people to transition from what they typically drink to our beer, or from beer to beer,” said Ehrlich, “to try things and be surprised by how they like it.” As for the more adventurous craft beer drinkers out there, Mount Rushmore Brewing has them covered too. Just check out their seasonal menu. A raspberry sage pale ale is the brewery’s feature for the Fall, while a lavender and lemon verbena wheat was on tap this Summer. “We try to make things as locally as possible,” said Ehrlich. “We really don’t want a reputation, other than to make more interesting things.” In addition to drinks, Mount Rushmore Brewing also boasts an event space and a soonto-be full-scale restaurant. The Pounding Fathers restaurant will open in the brewery’s second floor next year, featuring 24 taplines with exclusively South Dakota beers. The event space will also be converted into a more formal event center able to host banquets and receptions. For her part, Ehrlich said she’s tired but happy, looking back on her first few months at the forefront of Mount Rushmore Brewing. “It’s a lot of work to open a business and be successful in your first year,” she said. “But it all pays off when you see how happy people are. Are We Complete? BY TRACY KIRBY CRISTA BALLARD PHOTOGRAPHY

I only slept for three hours last night. I can’t even blame the children, my husband, or my snoring dog. They were all sound asleep, breathing deeply and effortlessly. I know, because I idiotically checked each of them multiple times; hovering my ear over their mouths and placing one hand on their heaving chests. Each time, leaving every one of their rooms in absolute wonder. How are all of the bedrooms in our house suddenly filled? I usually never have problems sleeping. In fact, if left to my own schedule and devices I am confident I could probably outsleep any Joe Schmo teenager out there. However, ever

since I earned the title “Mommy,” I have had countless sleepless nights—and many of them surprisingly have been self-inflicted. Those nights are the nights when I just cannot shut it all down; the multiple facets of the day and the days ahead as a parent incessantly churning wildly in my mind. Last night, however, it wasn’t a night of worry or stress as some of the nights have been in the past. On the contrary, it was a night where I kept checking everyone out of sheer awe. Awe that here they are — beating heart, steady breathing and all—sleeping in my house. It wasn’t long

ago when my husband and I were the only souls sleeping in our house. It was quiet; no snoring dog, no blaring white noise sound machines emanating from multiple rooms, no random sudden crying to make us bolt out of bed (injuring ourselves in the process), and no reason to stay awake at night and check that everyone is breathing. But now, suddenly, every room is filled. Believe me, the lofty gift that statement inherently suggests is not lost on me. The fact that our rooms are filled with precious breathing

children is a dream come true. We long prayed for this reality. We begged for this. We fought for this. And to now walk around my house at 3 a.m. and see the reality of our dreams and prayers quite literally in the flesh, is what is keeping me up at night. I’m a crazy insomniac in awe. In light of that awe and in light of coming out of the very real pregnancy and newborn fog, we’ve reached the point in our lives where we are having “the” conversation. That conversation being, “Is our family complete?” The reality is, my husband and I are no spring chickens anymore. Which is a polite way of saying, we are getting

old. We are getting achy. Not to mention, it is getting harder for us to maintain even just a very basic Mom and Dad bod. Thus, I submit to you that we are moving (have moved) outside of the realm of our ideal childbearing years. I think that is part of the reason I’m up at night staring at everyone in (slightly creepy) awe. I know in my heart we are closing the door on this beautiful season of childbearing and the newborn stage. Sacrificing a bit of sleep to stare in thankfulness and wonder and, in a way, pay homage to the closing of this season of life seems oddly appropriate.

I have been reflecting on this column and how many of you have been with me on this journey for so many years now. Thank you for being with me. Sincerely with my whole heart, thank you for reading. In keeping with moving into a new season, I have also decided this will be my last column here in this beautiful publication. My hope is that this will pave the way for someone else to move us and school us with their parenting wisdom and wit. It has been a joy and an honor to share life with you. Now, for a much-needed nap… •

Also a well known artist himself and one of the masterminds behind local band We All Have Hooks for Hands, 605 got to get a look at what a typical day in his life looks like.

I really enjoy stopping at Queen City Bakery before work or when I’m out running errands. I'm obsessed with their doughnut muffins. I’m currently working on my dad-bod, so I need baked goods. I usually buy most of my clothes online, but if I’m looking for a good pair of "mom jeans" to lounge around in, I’ll hit up a few thrift stores. My OG faves are St. Vincent de Paul or Union Gospel Mission Thrift. 2

Being an artist and building exhibits for the Old Courthouse Museum [1], I constantly find myself at Habitat for Humanity's ReStore [2]. A gem of a place to find eclectic and cheap items for builds like industrial lighting, institutional furniture, and weird fixtures. My wife and I live in central Sioux Falls, so we are always at The Co-op [Natural Foods] [3]. Forever stocking up on Breaks Coffee, Breadico bread, and their made-in-store peanut butter. When we eat out it is usually at Pho

3

Quynh. Their pho plus iced coffee is the perfect combo. I love seeing interesting art around town, and Ipso Gallery at Fresh Produce [4] has by far the best curation. Always stretching what art and community can do in Sioux Falls.

5

I love live music, and my favorite place to go for that is Total Drag [5]. It’s like seeing a house show with your friends. Very intimate shows that help build our music scene. On First Fridays I’ll usually hit up Vishnu Bunny Tattoo & Piercing for some weirdness and Coffea Roasterie for something to drink. During nights on the town, I love going to Carpenter Bar [6], and it seems like everyone else does as well. Best drinks in town.

MEET THE Artist SEAN BAXTER | JACK MCCALL TYPE OF ARTIST: ACTOR & ENTERTAINER

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// THE TRIAL OF JACK MCCALL HAS BEEN PERFORMED IN DEADWOOD SINCE THE MID-1920S, MAKING IT ONE OF THE NATION’S LONGEST RUNNING PLAYS.

T

he Main Street Shootouts. The Trial of Jack McCall. The Deadwood Stagecoach. Interacting with visitors from near and far throughout the historic town of Deadwood.

Deadwood Alive is a troupe of actors who have been entertaining for over 20 years. The non-profit group re-enacts several historically accurate incidents of the town’s past and are a must-see. Actor Sean Baxter portrays several characters, including the villain Jack McCall, who famously shot and killed Wild Bill Hickok from behind as he was playing poker holding what is now known as “Dead Man’s Hand.”

9 2 \\\\\\\\\ O C T O B E R

605 caught up with Baxter on the streets of downtown Deadwood to see what it’s like playing such a hated persona and what life is like when he’s not (impressively) in character.

WORKING SEVERAL SHOWS A DAY... is a lot of fun. I meet tons of new people every day from all over the world. It's never the same old thing. It's never boring.

MY PASSION FOR ACTING... is something I've always wanted to do. My friend, Rick Losey, got me into Deadwood Alive.

WAYS I GET INTO CHARACTER FOR JACK MCCALL ARE… so automatic at this point, I don't even think about it. What's funny is the looks I get when I'm out of costume and Jack comes out. I get away with a lot when I'm dressed as Jack.

I'VE BEEN PART OF DEADWOOD ALIVE... Since 2008. This is my 10th season. BEING IN DEADWOOD ALIVE HAS BEEN... an absolute blast! I'm doing exactly what I want to do. I get to entertain for a living. I am thankful for everyday I get to do it.

PLAYING A HATED PERSON IN SOUTH DAKOTA HISTORY… You'd be surprised. Most people love the “bad guy.” I've made some amazing friends.

IF PEOPLE HAVEN’T EXPERIENCED DEADWOOD ALIVE SHOWS, THEY SHOULD KNOW… all three of our gun fights are different. They are all based on actual events that happened here in Deadwood as documented by the Deadwood Pioneer. That newspaper has been in print since 1876. A MEMORABLE MOMENT DURING A SHOW WAS… when I killed Wild Bill dressed as a T-Rex. It was for the 142nd Anniversary of Wild Bill's assassination. Travis [Pearson], who plays Hickok, had no idea. The look on his face when I charged out and mauled him, priceless. He couldn't stop laughing. All the kids at the show ran up and hugged me. They all wanted pictures with the T-Rex. They forgot all about Wild Bill.

FRIDAYS AND SATURDAYS FROM 1-4 P.M. ON MAIN STREET.

OVER 90,000 VISITORS ATTEND DEADWOOD ALIVE PERFORMANCES A YEAR.

WHEN I’M NOT JACK MCCALL, YOU CAN USUALLY FIND ME… playing guitar and singing on Main Street. I play most weekends, 7-10 p.m. at the Wild Bill Bar. Monday's I play with Marty "Guitar" Nelson at Saloon #10. I call Adult Bingo there on Monday, also, for charity. So far, we've raised over $110K for Relay for Life. ONE OF MY FAVORITE SOUTH DAKOTA PLACES TO STOP AT IS… I like finding new places and trying new things. There's a lot to see in South Dakota. MY GO-TO RESTAURANT IS... Philly Ted's in Rapid. Also, Sickie's Garage. Me and Marty played

a Bike Night there this summer. The food and staff are amazing. Love that place. If there was a Pickle Barrel in Deadwood .... I'd go there every day. A FAVORITE PLACE TO BE IN DEADWOOD IS… wherever my friends are. Good times are important. WHAT I LOVE ABOUT DEADWOOD IS… how small it is. I live on Main Street. Everything I do is in walking distance. I haven't owned a vehicle in 15 years. WHEN I’M RELAXING, I LOVE TO… I play a lot of Mario Kart. IF I WASN’T ACTING, I WOULD BE… probably on

the road in a working band. That's how I ended up here. I was playing bass in a band out of [Las] Vegas. We use to play the #10 every month or so. The band broke up and I just stayed. ONE HISTORICAL THING I LEARNED IN DEADWOOD THAT SURPRISED ME WAS… that prostitution was legal here in town up until 1980. WORKING IN SUCH A HISTORICAL TOWN IS… awesome! I love it here. I'm having the time of my life. I'm a very lucky guy. FOR MORE INFORMATION VISIT DEADWOODALIVE.COM.

YES, ALL THREE OF THESE GUYS ARE NAMED JOHN. YES, IT WAS A POPULAR NAME IN THE ‘80S. THE IDENTITY OF THESE THREE AMIGOS HAVE BEEN ALTERED TO PROTECT THE INNOCENT. HAVE A QUESTION FOR THE JOHNS? SHOOT AN E-MAIL THEIR WAY: THEJOHNS@605MAGAZINE.COM.

MY COWORKER STANDS IN MY PERSONAL SPACE WHEN HE TALKS OVER OUR PARTITION. HOW CAN I GET HIM TO RESPECT MY BUBBLE WITHOUT BEING RUDE?

RECENTLY I WAS ON SOCIAL MEDIA AND DISCOVERED MY FRIEND HAD A LARGE DINNER PARTY AND DIDN'T INVITE ME. DO I ACKNOWLEDGE THAT I SAW PEOPLE'S POSTS OR JUST DROP IT?

I WAS RECENTLY HAVING BEERS WITH MY GUY FRIENDS, AND MY FRIEND'S HUSBAND WAS TELLING STORIES ABOUT BEING ADDICTED TO PORN. DO I TELL HER?

JR: When he begins his journey into your partition and into your personal space, blast Move Bitch by Ludacris every single time. He will get it.

JR: Put a piece of paper in their mailbox that just says, “I know what you did last summer.” How dare they not invite me, the life of the party?! I am the party! Maybe this is too personal for me.

JR: What website is he using? My go-to blocked me...

JW: No, but you should throw a party that is an exact replica and invite all the same people besides your friend. Also, do it better. Hire Lil Jon to perform.

JT: Honestly, you’re in the inner circle. Unless they’re straight up cheating, I would stay out of it.

JT: This is tough. Maybe put a

large plant where he normally stands so he has to backup to talk to you. Plus, plants are so “in” right now.
