LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER Alana Snyder PUBLISHER Alana Snyder DIRECTOR OF SALES AND MARKETING John Snyder MULTIMEDIA DESIGNERS Yany Avelar Tyson Schultz EDITORIAL ASSISTANT Kyle Determan ACCOUNT MANAGER Taylor Hanson PUBLISHING COPY EDITOR Kristal Seeden CONTRIBUTORS Erin Mairose Morgan Matzen Natalie Slieter CIRCULATION Annie Fuss

Considering we only get a short window of outdoor weather, it's important to take advantage. How, you ask? With summer activities and attractions, of course! One is a favorite of mine: 1880 Town. This I-90 treasure is not only a way to experience the late 1800s via relics, but you can literally dress the part as you walk through historically inspired buildings.

Austin Kaus Chad Konrad Coralie Richards Cameron Stalheim Brad Zimmerman PRINTER Publication Printers Corp. 2001 S Platte River Dr, Denver, CO 80223

Craving music and a good cause? Don't miss the 2019 line-up of JazzFest, which helps support Jazz & Blues Society programs statewide. Not only are headlining favorites coming back like Here Come the Mummies, but there are new festival elements like cocktails and a local craft beer tent.

COME VISIT

Salem BY KYLE DETERMAN

JUST THREE MILES NORTH OF 1-90 SITS SALEM, PREVIOUSLY KNOWN AS MELAS (SALEM SPELLED BACKWARD). WHAT WAS ONCE A MAJOR RAILROAD JUNCTION IS NOW HOME TO UP-AND-COMING COFFEE SHOPS, A TREASURE TROVE OF COLLECTIBLES, AND UNFORGETTABLE EATERIES.

Driving through downtown, my first stop was at The Homestead. Assistant manager Michelle Jimenez greeted me with a smile as she finished some sort of coffee creation. While I waited, I showed myself around, admiring the multiple seating areas, the outdoor space (complete with bistro lights), and locally made products ranging from bath bombs to jewelry. “The original owner wanted to open a coffee shop in Salem. When he opened this place, everyone loved it. So, the new owners, DJ and Jackie

Montreal, wanted to keep it exactly the same,” said Jimenez. Swearing by their sandwiches, Jimenez whipped one up while I checked out the bags of locallyroasted coffee beans. “Our Turkey Provolone sandwich is probably our most popular sandwich, but we are also known for our coffee. Our drink of the month is the Tiramisu Cold Brew, but I made you the Caramel Macchiato, which might be our most popular drink,” said Jimenez.

After drooling over the delicious food, and grabbing the coffee to go, I wandered down Main Street to Ace’s ShopWise. More than an average thrift store, this shop is divided into sections from home essentials to clothing. Owner Ace English was sitting beneath a giant Chewbacca head as he walked me through the history of ShopWise. “It was opened 11 years ago by a woman named Doris. She quickly outgrew the space. It switched buildings and then owners," explained English. "When we moved here in 2017, I decided to buy the business. Shortly after, I bought this building and reopened ShopWise in its original building." He gave me a tour of the store, starting with the Collector’s Corner, home to a $5,000 Beanie Baby and depression radiation glass. Home goods were next, followed by books, clothing, and furniture. “It’s nice to have something like this in Salem. It allows people to come get something they’ve been looking for without having to drive to Sioux Falls or having to pay Sioux Falls prices,” said English. Leaving with a VHS player in hand and a newfound appreciation for vintage glassware, I walked across the street to the Brewery.

In the midst of construction and cornhole season, owners Sheri and Ben Greenlee sat down with me to talk about the iconic Salem bar. “The Brewery actually started in 1963, and has been in continuous operation since then. The pizza oven and the pizza recipe has been here since then, too,” said Ben. The Greenlees explained that they recently purchased the neighboring building and are planning a grand opening of their expansion in July. “We will double the space we currently have from 60 seats to 120. We are also making space for a stage so we can bring in live music,” said Sheri. And while the space may be new, the idea of keeping things local and original is not, especially when it comes to the food. “We are known for our pizza and wings, and we make all of the sauces in house," said Ben. "Our food, our beer, and the bar in general is a staple for Salem. When you come home, you have to stop by the Brewery. It’s a must."•

Kyle and Nicky also like to test out some nontraditional, but equally delicious pizza toppings like Mac and Cheese, Philly Cheesesteak, and Chicken and Waffles. “If it tastes good by itself, it probably tastes good on a pizza crust,” said Kyle. “Cheese usually makes things better.” This season, Skipping Stone Pizza offers a Carnitas Verde Pizza with fresh herbs grown by the owners themselves. The small business caters for a variety of events like graduation parties, weddings, family reunions, and just about any event a customer may suggest. Skipping Stone also serves their pizza at Strawbale Winery on Thursdays from 5 to 8 p.m. from May to September. Another first-time vendor is Farm Life Creamery, a small batch, handcrafted business out of Ethan. Though previously under the name Valley Side Farm, Farm Life Creamery is under new owners, Laura Klock and Chad Blase.

Smith decided to start the bakery after seeing there was a need in her community for gluten-free options.

Farm Life Creamery offers a range of flavored cheeses as well as cheese curds, mozzarella, Gruyère, and several aged cheddars.

The bakery also caters to many dietary restrictions like diabetes as well as foods that are friendly to vegan, keto, and paleo diets.

Coffee cheddar has been a surprisingly popular product this summer, as well as fresh cheese curds.

After five years of operation, Heart of the City Bakery’s products can be found at Hy-Vee stores across Sioux Falls, as well as Pomegranate Market in Sioux Falls, and Sunshine Foods in Brandon.

Blase says the company is known for its unique flavors as well as their willingness to try new flavors. “You’ll never walk away from our cheese wondering what flavor it was,” said Chad. Farm Life Creamery raises and milks their own family cows. “It’s truly a farm to table company,” said Klock. In the future, Farm Life Creamery hopes to host an open house in Ethan as well as host an event to demonstrate how their cheese is made. To end a trip to the Falls Park Farmer’s Market on a sweet note, check out Heart of the City Bakery. April Smith is the owner of this gluten-free, peanut-free bakery located in Sioux Falls.

2 8 \\\\\\\\\ J U LY

“It drove me nuts that people couldn’t just go out and get a cupcake,” said Smith.

During the summer months, Heart of the City Bakery can also be found at 12th and Philips in downtown Sioux Falls from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. At the farmer’s market, Smith says Strawberry Rhubarb Crisp is a typical fan favorite and pairs well with Skipping Stone Pizza’s Breakfast Pizza. Another summer favorite is the Paleo Quiche for a savory treat. Heart of the City Bakery gladly takes requests for new products and accommodations for food preferences.

DISTINCT DESIGN Right off the bat, the curved driveway opened to the window-heavy home, placed upon 10 acres of land. With dark siding and a metallic glow from the copper covering, it had just the right amount of rustic and modern to keep things balanced and unique. “One of the HGTV Dream Homes was kind of the inspiration behind it. I just added my modern muse to it," said Holly. "There is a clear difference between city modern and rural modern, so we had to make sure it didn’t look out of place." Parallel to the front door is the courtyard, sandwiched between the two opposing spaces created by the shape of the home. “The vision was to have an entertainment side and a living side, with a big breezeway that connects the two. As far as the courtyard goes, it’s just a great place to hang out, eat in the summer, and watch the sunset over the water,” she said.

FUNCTIONAL FENG SHUI The entertainment side of the house consists of a dining room, the kitchen, and one of two sitting areas. The open concept not only adds to the airy feeling of the all-white walls, but also goes along with Holly's minimalist lifestyle. “I like all 90 degree angles, very modern and clean. We worked with Showplace Kitchens to create a space that is clean, minimal, with hardly anything anywhere," she said. "There is no clutter, no extra drawers, and everything has a home." The sleek and empty countertops provide a smooth transition into the sitting area. The white couch and marble fireplace frame the large marble coffee table, continuing the monochromatic theme of the house. “The coffee table allows so much space. People told me before coming into this that the white walls, concrete floors, and white marble would feel very cold, but it’s the complete opposite to me. It’s calm and very serene,” explained Holly.

DEN OF DREAMS On the other side of the house, in the living quarters, are the bedrooms. Both kids’ rooms and the master uphold the philosophy of less is more, from décor to color palette. “I am such a fan of the monochromatic feel, and I just wanted everything to flow,” said Holly. Ava and Owen have the upstairs rooms, each with their own bathroom. Ava’s room has two sets of bunk beds, a desk, and a floating brick wall that divides the sleeping space from the bathroom.

4 0 \\\\\\\\\ J U LY

“I just knew I wanted it to be open and for her to have a great space for sleepovers," said Holly. "Since the kids are only 14 months apart, they can all hang out here with their friends." Aware of the dangers of having all white furniture and two kids, Holly has the perfect solution to almost every staincentered concern. “People think that having white furniture around kids is stressful, but just make sure you have Resolve on hand and you’re good,” she laughed.

OPEN OASIS Down the stairs from the kids, and across the courtyard from the living space, is the master. The bed faces a wood-paneled fireplace, and the floor-to-ceiling windows provide a view of the acreage, as well as a feeling of complete openness. “I wanted it to feel like one big room," said Holly. "The half-wall between the sleeping area and the bathroom allows for that. I just love the way the wide-open space feels." The room flawlessly flows into the bathroom, which is home to a zero-entry shower and a 650-pound free-standing concrete tub. “The tub was a big one for us. I just love it. You would think it would get cold, but the concrete resin keeps the stone pretty tepid,” she explained. With grays, whites, and tans continuing throughout the home, it's easy to see the calmness this space brings to the family, a precise continuation of the peaceful prairie just outside. “I just feel like things need to have a reason to be in a room,” said Holly. “It’s super functional because it's absolutely everything you would ever need.”

1880 TOWN:

Travel Back in Time Outdoors BY N ATA L I E S L I E T E R

If you’ve traveled across the state, you’re likely familiar with Wall Drug, Mount Rushmore, and Crazy Horse. But if you’re looking for another attraction to add to your South Dakota vacation this summer, look no further than 1880 Town, just 22 miles west of Murdo and near Badlands National Park. 1880 Town started as a gas station in 1972 by owner Richard Hullinger. His father, Clarence Hullinger, was an avid collector of Western and Native American antiques and memorabilia. This inspired the vision for what the 14 acres of land–later expanded to 94–could become.

Around the time the gas station opened, a movie company was hoping to make a film set in the 1880 era. They built a movie set near the gas station and included some of Clarence’s Western antiques. The film company returned home and chose to gift the film set to Clarence, which led to the creation and expansion of what we know today as 1880 Town. Today, 30 original South Dakota buildings have been arranged in 1880 Town to give visitors an idea of what the typical South Dakota town would have looked like between the years 1880-1920. There are over 50 buildings and sites to see. As visitors walk through the "town," they will see a schoolhouse, hotel, church, bank, jail, saloon, and a 14-sided barn. While it isn’t a functioning town, visitors can go into every building and view antiques and other relics. Visitors can also rent costumes to wear during their time there, allowing them to get the full experience. There are also mules, horses, long-horn cattle, and even a camel. Manager Karen Smith has worked in 1880 Town since 1991. People can visit between May and October, with peak season from June to August. “Everybody likes it,” said Smith. “If you’re interested in Western history, it’s a good place to come.” Throughout the week, there are a couple entertainment options during the peak season. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays, Jeff Kline takes the stage to play the piano. If you visit between Thursdays and Mondays, you can check out Wild Bill’s Rope Tricks, Wagon Rides, and the Music & Comedy Show. There are also activities to keep the kids entertained.

BY ERIN MAIROSE When Trygve (Tryg) Fredrickson was appointed as the executive director of the Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues Society, he didn’t realize how many areas of education and programming the nonprofit impacted throughout the state. “It really wasn’t until talking with the board members [that I learned] what the true reason is and why the organization exists, and that is the education component and the

awareness of jazz and blues music in Sioux Falls and the community,” said Fredrickson. That has been one of his goals as he prepared for JazzFest 2019: Getting the mission better understood, alongside sharing the “why” behind JazzFest as the source of fundraising, all while providing a year of jazz and blues education and programming.

This year's JazzFest is July 19 and 20, and performers will once again take to two stages at Yankton Trail Park in Sioux Falls. Tryg says it’s a year of bringing back performers by popular demand, with seven returning for an encore.

Since JazzFest started in 1988, it now draws a crowd of over 100,000 concert goers with a volunteer team of around 700. This growth has also expanded the SFJB's ability to teach and share this genre of music that is uniquely American.

Performances start on Friday at 5:30 p.m. with local Sioux Falls group Tempo taking the stage before Miss Myra & The Moonshiners perform a repertoire of New Orleans and hot jazz music. The evening is headlined by Tower of Power, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary as a soulful, instrumental, R&B favorite.

Funds from JazzFest go toward yearround programs like the All City Jazz Ensemble, a group of about 40 middle and high school students who audition to be selected, before spending weeks rehearsing leading up to a concert.

Saturday Tryg describes as “strong in fun” with the band MarchFourth bringing brassy funk, rock, jazz, and a circus twist all to create an evening of music that “all ages should get a kick out of.” The day kicks off at noon, and the evening ends with the band Here Come the Mummies taking the stage at 9:30 p.m. The eight-piece band of "Egyptian mummies" will end the night with fun funk-rock tunes before fireworks light up the sky above the main stage. “You can tell it feels like a summer celebration,” said SFJB events manager Ashley Meiners.

As a Roosevelt High School student, “It gave me the opportunity to play with great high school talent within Sioux Falls and several members of that group I still play with today,” he said. Fredrickson says the jazz ensemble promotes music collaboration across schools, giving the best Sioux Falls jazz students the chance to learn and play together. “It seems like most of other music gets competitive, but the role of jazz music is not competition. It’s collaboration,” said Hanegan.

“THIS YEAR WE'RE REALLY LOOKING TO CHANGE THE PERSPECTIVE OF JAZZFEST TO FOCUS ON JAZZFEST BEING THE ENGINE OF OUR OTHER PROGRAMS—WE RELY HEAVILY ON THOSE FUNDS TO GO IN AND OUT OF SCHOOLS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR." --ASHLEY MEINERS, JAZZFEST EVENTS MANAGER

Other programs include the Jazz Diversity Project, which is a group of five professional musicians who travel across the state to middle and high schools. They perform and introduce jazz within the content of history, humanities, and social studies during an hourlong presentation.

“You may not buy a Duke Ellington album, but we want them to understand that this music had an impact on our history and country today,” said Speirs.

“Originally we talked about this notion that if you’re a student you might learn about classic European composers, like Mozart and Bach," said Jim Speirs, who plays the trumpet in the ensemble. "But how many students know the name of Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington, and the great American composers?”

Speirs has played in every presentation since the Jazz Diversity Project started in 2006. Each year they put on about 25 programs throughout South Dakota, from Lemmon to Pine Ridge, and in many smaller communities that have less than a 100 students in K-12.

The goal isn’t to reach students who are already active in music. Instead they want audience members to grow in appreciation for the jazz and blues art form.

5 6 \\\\\\\\\ J U LY

“For some of these students it may be the only professional music ensemble that they hear in their entire young life,” said Speirs. “It’s cool to see students light up and show interest as we introduce great American music for the first time to young people.”

The most recent addition to the Jazz and Blue Society’s programming is Jazz Camp, a summer program where students get to rehearse and learn from local professionals, before performing on the second day of JazzFest. A couple of changes to this year's event involve beverages, including the addition of mixed drinks, along with a craft beer tent serving local brews on tap. “We're really taking the approach of looking at JazzFest as a community event, so we thought it was fitting to reach out to craft breweries who serve us locally,” said Meiners.

There will also be an expanded kids’ area with hands-on music and play activities. These new elements to the twoday music festival aim to continue growing a community celebration about appreciating and experiencing great music, all while receiving donations that will reach every corner of South Dakota. “I didn’t understand how many areas it benefited [before my new role],” said Fredrickson. “I like to say the bottom line is it’s changing lives, and that’s something that we're doing."

MEET THE Creative HUAN LIN PARKOUR AND FREERUNNING ATHLETE

“WHEN I'M WITH OTHER PEOPLE, I'M JUST HAVING FUN, IMPROVING MORE, AND FEELING MORE MOTIVATED. IT’S A LOT HARDER TO TRAIN BY MYSELF THAN WITH OTHERS BECAUSE I HAVE NO ONE THERE TO PUSH ME.”

H

uan Lin, who is known as "Huan the Demon" on Instagram, can be seen almost daily training in parkour and freerunning in downtown Sioux Falls. Using these expressions to interact with various obstacles and the environment, Lin uses his craft for both physical and mental benefits. 605 caught up with the athlete to get tips, to find out what it’s like, and to see what he’s up to when he’s not flipping off walls. 5 8 \\\\\\\\\ J U LY

I started parkour when... I was about 14 or 15 years old, back then when I used to do martial arts.

What people misunderstand about parkour is... that it’s not all about the roof jumping or doing super crazy things. We know what we're doing and we aren’t there to cause trouble. Some are beginners, amateurs, intermediates, and pros. There are a lot of reasons why we do it.

My favorite place to train is... Cherapa Place downtown because it has the most obstacles and walls that I can train to the

fullest. No other spots really interest me as much, but I like to move on to a different spot to drill more moves depending on how much I like that spot.

The reason I love parkour is... it makes me feel good about myself and many other reasons. It’s good for the body and mind. It makes me feel free, and it keeps me out of trouble.

A tip to prepare to train is... to always warm up 30 minutes before you go hard. I slowly build my way up and I make sure to never rush things. I do martial arts warmups first, then slowly do the basic parkour vaults

and jumps before I go on with the flips.

When I film practices, it’s for… my social media where people follow me and to see my progression. I also want to show the way I move and get more respected by other free runners out there, because I’m all about flow. It’s not easy to do everything fluidly because of the stamina. It’s all about memories to me, so when I get really old and I'm about to die, I can look back and be happy that I spent most of my time doing what I love the most.

INTERESTED IN PARKOUR? TRY THE 605 NINJA ACADEMY.

When I film, I film with… a Canon DSLR Rebel camera because it has a better quality to it and more options than using my own cell phone.

The scariest part about parkour is... learning something new or the fear of getting hurt.

I got the courage to try it for the first time... when I first watched a YouTube video of it.

One moment I’ll never forget doing parkour is... taking third place at a competition in Arizona.

I train to... become better, stronger, and because it’s my purpose in life. I live and breathe it.

How I make sure I stay safe is... a lot of factors. It’s pretty hard to explain, so I’ll just say one thing: I trust myself 100 percent and just go for it, no matter what happens.

One move that I’m working on right now is... a Scoot Full. I know people downtown watch me train and... that doesn’t really bother me as long as they don’t yell or be disrespectful. It kind of makes me laugh sometimes since I’m all about having fun and not taking most things seriously. Life is too short.

6 2 \\\\\\\\\ J U LY

The coolest place I’ve trained is... South Bay Tempest Academy gym in California.

One place (nationally or internationally) I would love to do parkour is... London. Some of my favorite free runners on Instagram are… Dom Tomato, Joey Adrian, Erik Mukhametshin, and Ed Scott. These guys motivate me the most to go out to train, and they represent the sport well, in my opinion.

When I listen to music, I turn on… Lofi Hip Hop beats because it’s very relaxing to me.

When I’m not doing parkour, I… watch some anime. I also like watching a lot of videos on YouTube.

My tip for anyone starting out with parkour is... never be afraid of what anyone thinks, and always warm up before training.

Coffea [Roasterie] is conveniently right up the street from us. I love to grab a caffeinated beverage to get me going for the day. A go-to classic for me is a Café Miel. It’s delicious on ice for the summer time. I love to walk my pup, Juniper, in and around the McKennan Park area. It’s always bustling, and you’re sure to run into someone you know who’s also enjoying the outdoors. This summer I have spent a good amount of my days off in my yard. It has been fun making some small improvements to our outdoor living space. I’m very into planting and forgetting, so perennials are where it's at for me. I really do love to hike. Utilizing our local areas when I can is definitely high on my list. GOS has a group hike every other Wednesday evening, which is a wonderful way to get to know our local areas with fellow hikers. Fernson Downtown has been a popular stop for my weekends lately. It’s the perfect stop for delicious food and a cold beer. Their fried chicken is a game changer.

My parents are season ticket holders to The Good Night Theatre Collective, and on occasion I get to take their place. I have so much fun getting to experience our local theater.

O THE POUNDING FATHERS 140 Mount Rushmore Rd., Custer // (605) 673-4200 // mtrushmorebrewingcompany.com

W

hen 605 featured Mt. Rushmore Brewing Company in Custer last year, we heard the upstairs was going to eventually open as a restaurant called The Pounding Fathers. First off, get your head out of the gutter. And yes, I giggled like I was 8 when I first heard the name, too.

But the concept behind the name are the Founding Fathers of the United States “pounding” beverages and making merry.

6 8 \\\\\\\\\ J U LY

By the time it was about ready to open in June, though, I couldn't make the trip. Half of 605’s team went out to the Black Hills for 605 Day, and half stayed back in Sioux Falls for the statewide celebration. Now, this is difficult, since I'm the writer of this column. So we improvised. John Snyder and Taylor Hanson from our office (and Taylor’s boyfriend, Levi Douglas) FaceTimed me as they experienced the new space above the taproom. I got a tour via iPhone, and it appeared to be clean and modern, with barnwood and tin accents. Historical photographs of Mount Rushmore hung on the walls, and one of the team’s favorite features were the six-barrel kegs that were turned into pendant lights above the bar.

FOOD + DRINK

First up was the Beer Can Chicken, as I awkwardly watched from my desk. Rubbed with fine herbs, it was marinated with a creamy IPA beer sauce, and was served with rustic mashed potatoes and buttered vegetables. Let’s not forget the most important part. It (as in the chicken) was wearing a chef’s hat. Taylor dug in and mentioned the sauce was thicker, like a beer cheese sauce that they drizzled onto the chicken. “This is my first beer can chicken I’ve ever had,” said John. Levi chimed in, “You can taste the beer. It’s really good.” Taylor’s main squeeze also mentioned how,

especially with the sauce, it was very moist and not dry. “I would totally get this again,” said John. “Totally,” confirmed Levi. What made the mashed potatoes “rustic” was having pieces of potato and skin in the mash. “I love when it still has the chunks,” said Taylor, using her best Food Network terminology. Next was the Soft-Shell Crab Slider, which is an appetizer. The breaded and deep-fried shell was served with a fresh salad, topped with pineapple jalapeño dressing.

FOOD + DRINK

It was visually appealing. The team on the other end of the phone looked a bit puzzled, and mentioned it was so cool to look at that is almost appeared like it could “get up and walk away.” John was the first to grab a piece, which he admitted he didn’t feel totally confident he was eating correctly. “It’s light and not super seafoody,” he said. Taylor mentioned it was a bit confusing on how to take on this dish, and they regretted not asking the staff. But the consensus was that they enjoyed the nibbles they did get. And then the Sweet Pork Tenderloin arrived and Taylor’s world changed. The dish had two five-ounce pork tenderloins wrapped with bacon. It was glazed with sweet-scottish ale berry sauce, served with mashed sweet potatoes and buttered vegetables. “The sauce is like a berry jelly,” said John. This freshly made sauce is actually Wojapi, or a Native American berry sauce, said Chef Joseluis Dominguez as he walked by. “I would put this on my toast every morning,” Taylor said, pointing at the plate. They continued to eat and chatted about the sweet potatoes and how much they loved the sauce. Another staff member walked by and Taylor said, “I would buy this. Do you guys sell it? I would legit use this every morning for breakfast.”

7 0 \\\\\\\\\ J U LY

They chuckled, thinking she was joking, and walked away. She muttered, “I was serious…” After reminding them that I was watching them eat, they moved on to the finale: the Tatanka Tomahawk. This buffalo prime rib was 29 ounces and was gorgeous to look at. It’s clear that presentation is important to Pounding Fathers, and it really makes the experience. You can choose from several sides, and the team had Chorizo Mac-n-Cheese, which Taylor said was almost a meal in itself with its richness. “The mac-n-cheese is dynamite,” said John. There are normally two sauces to choose from, but the crew got both. One is the Criolla, with three peppers, onions, and garlic, and the second was the Chimichurri with parsley, garlic, and white vinegar. They all agreed the sauces were a nice addition, but not necessary. “This is the most tender buffalo I’ve ever had,” said John. “The steak is perfectly done. If you like yours more well done I can see the sauce adding flavor, but you don’t really need it.” FOR MORE INFORMATION, VISIT MTRUSHMOREBREWINGCOMPANY. COM.•

Even calling it a modern pub wouldn’t be doing Pounding Fathers justice. The menu design, the menu itself, and the warm atmosphere above the brewery gets even better with an outdoor patio that wraps around the whole building. It also nods to Mount Rushmore without being too touristtrappy/corny.

The prices have quite the range. You can get most meals for $19 or less, but if you’re looking for beef it’s more in the $20-plus range (the epic Tomahawk is $69.99).

The only struggle was the crab, which the crew just didn’t understand (self-admittedly). Taylor is probably still talking about the berry sauce to someone, and they said that was one of the best steaks they’ve ever had, which is high praise from South Dakotans.

Now, the Black Hills Caverns in Rapid City mark 80 years open to the public this year, commemorating its first opening to the public in 1939 when it was known as “Wild Cat Cave.”

Some of the unique rock formations found in the cavern include the common stalagmites and stalactites as well as rare frost crystals, flowstone, cave flower, helictites, draperies, soda straw stalactites, and popcorn crystals.

Contributing to that history are Kathy Johnson and husband Dennis, who are the seventh family to own and operate the caverns since its opening. While the Black Hills Caverns contain such historical relevance, Kathy says the cave is a living thing. “The cave is constantly naturally changing and forming,” she said. “In the lower levels where you have the water dripping, that’s bringing additional formations and adding to the formations that are

“EVERY CAVE IS A LITTLE DIFFERENT. THERE’S A GOOD SHOWCASE OF THE HILLS, AND THEN OUR NATIONAL PARKS ARE GREAT CAVES, TOO. BUT THE NATURALNESS OF THE CAVERNS IS WHAT REALLY SETS IT APART FROM OTHER ATTRACTIONS.”

While the Black Hills Caverns are not fully explored, Kathy said the tours they offer present most of the caverns to patrons. “There are a lot of unexplored caverns and a lot of unexplored areas of the cave,” she said. The Crystal Tour shows off the main level of the cave and is “an easy walking tour. You really only get to see 70 percent of the cave that we show, but we have that because there are some people who can't do a full tour,” said Kathy. “You’re going to see the natural crystal formations on the main level, a nice history of the cave, and a history of the Black Hills." The Adventure Tour includes two additional levels of the cave and more views of the “wet, live cave,” said Kathy. Black Hills Caverns also offers gemstone panning and crystal mining as fun activities for families and young children. Kids can look for (and keep) everything from rubies and emeralds to fossils, shark teeth, and calcite crystals, says Kathy. “Kids love rocks,” she continued. “It’s become a huge part of what we do. It’s a science, and we all kind of forget that sometimes when we’re holding rocks. We have several different varieties of gemstone panning, and they use a sluice and pan like they would have in a creek bed in the 1880s when they were looking for gold." WHERE THE CHILD THINGS ARE

Lifeguard on Duty BY KYLE DETERMAN

SUMMER

MONTHS BRING WARM WEATHER, BBQ SUNDAYS, AND TRIPS TO THE POOL. GROWING UP, WE WOULD PACK OUR SWIM PASSES AND TOWELS AND HEAD TO THE LOCAL SWIMMING HOLE. IT WAS A SIMPLE POOL, WITH TWO DIVING BOARDS AND TWO VENDING MACHINES. THAT’S IT. NO SLIDES OR HOT DOG STANDS, OR EVEN UMBRELLAS TO OFFER A QUICK RESPITE FROM THE BLAZING SUN. 9 0 \\\\\\\\\ J U LY

It was the absolute best. We would swim for hours, racing from one side of the pool to the other, and trying our hand at flips in the deep end. As we got older, we made our way to different pools. They were ones that offered more lounge chairs than diving boards, as our priorities changed from summer fun to dramatic tanlines. Thinking back to these days of chlorine-soaked hair, I packed up Sloan’s first beach bag, stuffing more than enough swimming diapers into the side pockets as she played with the baby sunscreen. I was already nervous, not just because she had never been to an outdoor pool, but because the news had been riddled with horror stories of babies and toddlers in swimming pools. How could I guarantee she would stay happy, excited, and afloat? I desperately tried to push those thoughts away as we headed out. It wasn’t too busy, but there were kids of all ages splashing in the shallow end, jumping in the deep end, and everything in between.

ONE TOWEL FOR STAYING WARM Sloan seemed intrigued and eager to check out the water, which suppressed my initial anxiety toward the other swimmers. Anxiety that belonged, I quickly realized, in the process of getting Sloan water-ready. Swimming diapers, commonly known as "swimmers," are built like pull-ups. Trying to get a baby to stand up long enough to get the swimmer situated on their tiny booty is a chore, and then getting a swimsuit on is like extra credit. And then there is the sunscreen. Note to self: Put sunscreen on before their swimsuit. It’s never a bad idea to have sunscreen in places you think will be covered, and they're more likely to sit still before you stuff them into the nylon prison that is a one-piece swimsuit. After that test of patience and agility, we were ready to make our maiden voyage to the baby pool. The water was chilly, which didn’t make for a great first impression of the wet world we were wading into. With a deathgrip on my shoulder, Sloan slowly looked around at the fountains and mini slide, taking in the sounds of cannonballs and lifeguard whistles.

What I’ve Learned… SWIMMING LESSONS DON’T HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL SCHOOL-AGE. CHECK YOUR LOCAL PARKS AND REC OFFICES TO SEE IF THEY OFFER A BABY AND ME SWIM CLASS.

PEOPLE WILL OFFER, ASK, AND BEG TO TAKE YOUR BABY SWIMMING. IF YOU DON’T FEEL COMFORTABLE, SPEAK UP. THERE IS NO HARM IN WANTING TO BE IN CONTROL OF YOUR BABY’S INTERACTION WITH WATER, POOLS, AND SPLASHING KIDS.

IF YOU’RE NERVOUS ABOUT OTHER PATRONS AT THE PUBLIC POOL, SEE IF YOU CAN FIND A POOL THAT OFFERS A WALK-IN AREA, WHICH ALLOWS FOR BOTH YOU AND YOUR BABY TO BE IN THE POOL, BUT ELIMINATES BIG KIDS AND THEIR ROWDY FRIENDS.

With the sun shining on her auburn curls and her toes skimming the pool’s surface, I couldn’t help but be in complete awe of my little human.

After accidentally involving ourselves in a game of Marco Polo, and before we completely turned to prunes, we retreated to the cool, dark locker room.

Less than 30 minutes prior she had never been to an outdoor pool. Now she was splashing around in a one-foot pool, looking at me with enthusiasm, discovery, and guidance.

Thankfully Swimmergate 2019 prepared me for the marathon that is getting a wet onesie off of a baby. There were tears (from both of us), but we made it through, tangled hair and all.

She would reach for the fountain or move along the pool’s edge, and then look at me. It was almost as if she was saying “I’m still good, right?”

Driving off, with the sounds of cabana music and laughter behind us, I felt a sense of accomplishment.

Somehow, her hesitation had turned to complete confidence not only in herself, but also in my ability to keep her safe.

I took Sloan swimming outside, and we had fun.

We continued splashing around, and even spent some time in the big pool, though her koala grip only tightened the deeper we got.

9 4 \\\\\\\\\ J U LY

We laughed, she didn’t get a sunburn, and it left me feeling like a proud mom—proud in her willingness to experience new things, and proud in my willingness to let her.

And even though that may seem trivial, it takes a lot of gusto to introduce babies to new things, especially things that could potentially be dangerous. Don’t ignore your innate need to keep your little one safe, but don’t ignore their yearning for adventure, either. Trust yourself, trust your children, and swim on.•

ASK THE JOHNS

Know Your SD

YES, ALL THREE OF THESE GUYS ARE NAMED JOHN. YES, IT WAS A POPULAR NAME IN THE ‘80S. THE IDENTITIES OF THESE THREE AMIGOS HAVE BEEN ALTERED TO PROTECT THE INNOCENT. HAVE A QUESTION FOR THE JOHNS? SHOOT AN E-MAIL THEIR WAY: THEJOHNS@605MAGAZINE.COM.

JR: I think this is my wheelhouse. I love when my mom oversteps! Except when I’m trying to host a lady friend and she tells us there’s a “no blanket rule” on the couch. JW: Are you not taking her loving instructions to heart? As the end credits message of 1994’s classic drama Higher Learning: U.N.L.E.A.R.N. You must unlearn this misplaced hate toward your poor mother-inlaw! Let’s learn the message that John Singleton wanted us to learn... eat the vitamins.

I NEED SPACE FROM MY BOYFRIEND, BUT HE ALWAYS INVITES HIMSELF OUT WITH THE GROUP. HELP? JR: Just start hanging out with one of your friends that he can’t stand. When he invites himself out, dramatically stop as you open the door and say, “Ooh, wait. Jessica is going to be there.” Jessica should start showing up everywhere… wink, wink. JW: This is one of the main benefits of dating multiple people! You can rotate to a new boo. JT: Just let him know you need time with your friends. He should understand. If not, you don’t need a clinger in your life. Or maybe try saying, “How can I miss you if you won’t go away?”

I WAS BEST FRIENDS WITH A GUY FOR YEARS. NOW THAT HE’S MARRIED, HE TOLD ME HE CAN’T HANG WITH ME ALONE ANYMORE BECAUSE I’M A FEMALE. IS THAT FAIR TO OUR FRIENDSHIP? JR: His wife must think you’re up to something. Maybe test the waters by going out of your way to touch him when you speak to him, or whisper whenever possible. If she reacts, scream, “Ah-ha!” I don’t know what this accomplishes, but someone should film it.

MY HUSBAND’S MOM COMPLETELY OVERSTEPS HER ROLE. FOR EXAMPLE, SHE’S ON A HEALTH KICK AND DECIDED TO MAIL ME A BUNCH OF VITAMINS WITH HER HAND-WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS ON EACH BOTTLE. HOW DO I KINDLY TELL HER TO BACK OFF?

+

JW: This one is easy. Just sleep with him to break up his marriage so you can be friends again! JT: Unfortunately things

change with marriage. I don’t agree with what they’re doing, but it’s their marriage and their rules/life. She might just need to be around if you want to see him.

JT: Isn’t this what in-laws are for? Just kidding. Not really. Telling them to back off is a slippery slope. Beware.
