Dear TGO Residents, Happy Holidays Everyone! I hope you had a Merry Christmas day, and you are now enjoying a peaceful holiday season with family and friends. The CSA staff and I wish to thank you for the wonderful holiday cards, gifts, cookies and candies you brought by the office… we have enjoyed your thoughtful wishes and treats, and now we must consider beginning a New Year’s diet!

The New Year is a time for hope, reflection and goal-setting. My goal in 2026 is to continue my focus on keeping TGO a wonderful place to work, and to develop our CSA staff and recognize them for hard work. Just last week we held our Holiday Employee Breakfast. You’ll find some fun photos of this event starting on page 30 inside this edition of The Happenings. The Board of Directors and I recognized our entire team for their hard work and the Blue Heron team fed them a hearty breakfast. We also honored Harry Shetler for 20 years of service to our TGO owners. Harry started his career here as a lawn crewmember, and currently serves as our maintenance mechanic. We also recognized Randy Hendershott (see page 34) from the Blue Heron Restaurant as our ‘Employee of the Quarter’ for his excellent work in the kitchen.

These are just two examples of the wonderful people who work hard every day to keep TGO a great place to live.

It is also my goal in 2026 to continue our efforts to modernize and improve our community buildings and infrastructure. Our 2026 budget calls for renovating The Pavilion building and the pool filtration system at the Oak Cove Pool. Our new budget also has us focusing on improving the easement of our two-mile potable water line that brings our drinking water from the City of Cocoa. Next year, we will also continue our efforts to improve drainage pathways throughout the community to prevent flooding.

Another goal I have is to seamlessly move into a new partnership with Turf Masters. There is a great article in this edition of The Happenings, starting on page 54, that shares their new approach for improving your lawns and reducing weeds through a comprehensive program utilizing soil samples and data. Turf Masters was here this week performing complimentary aerations in Hidden Lakes. I can already tell that Turf Masters is the right choice for our community.

Our new Head Golf Professional, Garret Howell, has already been on site for the past few weeks, getting to know the course, the staff, and our golfing community. You can learn more about Garret starting on page 12.

I sincerely wish each of you a Happy, Healthy New Year.

Meet Garret Howell

The Great Outdoors’ New Golf Pro With the retirement of longtime Golf Professional Chuck Kandt, The Great Outdoors welcomes a new face to the golf shop - one that brings energy, experience, and a deep respect for the foundation already in place. Meet Garret Howell, his journey has taken him from the deserts of Arizona to competitive college athletics, PGA-accredited golf management, and ultimately to Florida’s Space Coast. Thoughtful, competitive by nature, and genuinely enthusiastic about the game, Garret isn’t arriving to reinvent the wheel. Instead, he’s focused on building relationships, continuing strong programs, and guiding the course forward with a steady hand and a fresh perspective.

First, congratulations on becoming the new Golf Pro at The Great Outdoors. What will your official title be?

My official title will be Head Golf Professional.

Before we talk golf, let’s back up a bit. You currently live in Titusville, correct? Are you settled in pretty well here?

I do live in Titusville. I live right in the middle of town, and so far, it’s been a great place to live, and not too far from TGO. Are you originally from Florida?

No, I actually grew up in Phoenix, Arizona. I was born and raised there and lived in Phoenix all the way through high school.

Arizona to Florida is a big change, were there a few stops in between? Where did college take you?

After high school, I went to Seton Hill University, just outside of Pittsburgh in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. I spent two years there playing lacrosse on scholarship.

Lacrosse isn’t something people immediately associate with Arizona. How did you get into that sport?

It’s definitely not as common out west, but during my time in high school there was a big push for lacrosse in Arizona. A former college player named Matt Rakowski moved to Phoenix and started a strong junior lacrosse program. A lot of players came through that system, and many of them went on to play at colleges back east. I was fortunate to be part of that group, and the competition level was actually very high.

So this wasn’t casual lacrosse, you were playing at a pretty serious level?

Very much so. We were a true college program, traveling and competing against other schools. Most of our games were on the East Coast - Pennsylvania, the Carolinas, New York, places like that, but it was full-speed, high-level competition.

For people who may not be familiar with lacrosse, how would you describe the sport?

It’s fast-paced and physical. I usually describe it as a mix of hockey, basketball, and soccer. You get hit like hockey, you maintain possession and move the ball like basketball, and you’re covering a lot of ground like soccer. It’s demanding—physically and mentally.

That sounds very different from golf. When did golf enter the picture for you?

I grew up around golf, my dad owns a small business in the golf industry, but I didn’t play consistently until my senior year of high school. I’ve always been pretty Type A - intense, competitive, and a bit of a perfectionist. With most sports, I felt like I could figure them out over time. Golf was different. It challenged me in a way nothing else had.

Different how?

I just couldn’t solve it. No matter how much effort I put in, there was always something to improve, something that didn’t quite click. That challenge completely captured me.

And did that pull toward golf change your course in life?

It did. After my sophomore year at Seton Hill, I made the decision to step away from college for a year. I went back home to Arizona, worked some, but mostly focused on practicing and improving my golf game. My goal was to find a school where I could fully commit to golf.

I enrolled in New Mexico State University’s Golf Management Program in Las Cruces. It’s a PGA-accredited program and ultimately how I earned my PGA membership.

Were you playing on the golf team there?

I wasn’t on the official team, but the program has its own competitive structure. We played in in-house tournaments and events as part of the curriculum, so I was still able to compete regularly and continue improving my game.

What was that experience like compared to traditional college athletics?

It was great. It kept the competitive edge I was used to from lacrosse, but it was more individual and much more technical. The program itself was outstanding, and I really enjoyed living in Las Cruces. Coming from the Southwest, it felt like a much more natural fit than Pittsburgh - especially after surviving winter lacrosse camps that started in January. That cold was tough.

Did you earn your degree in at New Mexico State?

Yes, my degree is actually in marketing. The golf management program runs through the business department, so I earned a business degree with a specialization in golf management.

After finishing at New Mexico State, what came next for you?

After I graduated, I stayed right where I was. While I was still in school, I had interned at the Club at Las Campanas in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Once I finished the program, I transitioned into an assistant professional role there. It was a pretty natural move. I had built good relationships, made strong connections, and really enjoyed the environment, so staying on made sense.

I stayed at Las Campanas up until I moved here to Titusville.

That’s quite a jump, from Santa Fe to Titusville. How did that come about?

It’s definitely an interesting story. During the winter of 2023, I was playing in some golf tournaments down in Port St. Lucie.

While I was there, I met my wife on a dating app. We were just barely within each other’s distance range - you know how those apps let you set how far out you’re willing to go. We connected, messaged back and forth a bit, and then I drove up to Titusville.

And where was that first date?

Pizza at Grumbley’s on Garden Street. It all worked out. I really liked her, and she liked me - apparently - because here we are.

Sounds like things moved pretty quickly from there?

They did, but it felt right. I moved here last October, and we got married in March.

Congratulations, that’s fairly recent.

Thank you. We dated for about a year and got engaged exactly one year from the day we met.

What is your wife’s name?

Happy.

Happy, that’s an unforgettable name.

It definitely is. She’s Happy Howell now. Before that, she was Happy Kirstead. Some people around town might recognize that name. Her dad is a teacher at Astronaut High School, and her family has been very involved in the community.

So is Happy in education as well?

She was for a while. She taught at Park Avenue Christian Academy, but her main focus has been something else entirely. She owns a Taekwondo school called Courageous Kicks Taekwondo, right here in Titusville.

That’s impressive. How did she get into that?

She’s been doing Taekwondo since she was 11 years old. When she was 14, the man who owned the school she trained at was preparing to move. He told her the school would either close or she could take it over. She chose to keep it going.

At fourteen?

It started small with just a handful of students, but she kept building it. Today she has over 200 students.

That’s pretty remarkable.

Honestly, she’s way more interesting than I am. You should probably do an article on her.

There’s a lot of discipline involved in martial arts - probably more than people realize.

Absolutely. There are really two sides to it. One is the sport side, which focuses heavily on sparring and competition. The other side is more traditional and disciplined with customs, courtesies, mental development. Happy’s school leans more toward that full-spectrum approach. It’s not just about sparring; it’s about structure, discipline, and personal growth. Not too much different than what golf is.

So once you moved to Titusville and got married, were you already working locally?

I was. I worked for a company called Golf Made Simple. We ran two- and three-day golf schools out of Grande Vista Resort in Orlando.

Before officially stepping into your role here, had you already seen or played The Great Outdoors course?

Yes, actually. I played nine holes here when I was visiting Happy, it was before the renovation. So I got to see what the course was Continued... like before the changes.

Garret Howell - TGO’s New Golf Pro And now?

It’s come a long way. The renovation really transformed it. The greens are the best in Brevard County by far. It’s not even close.

A lot of that credit goes to Shane Willey and his team.

Absolutely. Shane has done an incredible job. It’s not just the greens, either - the fairways, the overall turf conditions. When you hit a shot, you can feel it. The club interacts with the turf exactly the way it’s supposed to. That tells you everything about how well the course is being maintained.

You’ve lived in Phoenix, Santa Fe, and now Florida. How has the change in climate affected you - especially as a golfer?

The biggest difference is the humidity. Phoenix and Santa Fe are obviously much drier. Out there, we’d get maybe a two-week monsoon season where it rained in the afternoons, and water was always an issue. Maintaining golf courses in that environment is expensive and challenging. Here, we get more rain, which brings its own challenges, but it’s a very different situation overall.

It’s obvious, that now, golf is a big part of your everyday life.

Absolutely. I love practicing and playing. That’s really why I got into the golf industry in the first place. I wanted to be around the game. I’m a competitor by nature, and I enjoy the process of improvement. There are plenty of golfers better than me, but that’s not really the point. The fun is in working at something and trying to get better.

Golf has a reputation for being unforgiving. What keeps you coming back?

Golf is really about competing with yourself. It’s not always about hitting better shots than you did yesterday. Sometimes improvement just means staying more focused, managing your emotions better, or sticking to your process. You have to break it down and take it one piece at a time.

Now that you’re the Golf Professional here, do you think you’ll still get to play as much as you’d like?

Probably not as much as before, but I’ll still be able to play plenty.

I’ve already been invited by a lot of our regular golfers to get out on the course, which I really appreciate. I want to be out there with them. There are a lot of great people here, both guys and ladies, who will be fun to play with.

You’ve mentioned being a multi-sport athlete growing up. What else did you play?

I played a little of everything - soccer, baseball, football. Baseball was probably my biggest sport growing up, but eventually it felt a little slow for me. Ironically, I didn’t play golf as a kid because I thought it was too slow. When I was younger, I wanted to be running around all the time. Golf felt like a lot of waiting, you know, hit a shot, sit in the cart, hit another shot. As I got older, I realized that’s actually one of the best parts of this sport. You hit a shot, sit back, talk, enjoy the moment. Now I think it’s pretty great.

As you settle into this role, I’m sure you’ve already have ideas of your own to implement. How do you see those evolving?

Eventually, I’ll introduce some new ideas, but right now the focus is on keeping the momentum going. Chuck has built something really solid here. The operation runs well, the programs are strong, and people are happy. That puts me in a great position.

I’m not walking into a situation that needs to be fixed, I’m stepping into one that already works. My goal is to add my own touches over time while continuing what’s already been successful.

From a business standpoint, are there areas you’re especially focused on?

One big focus will be finding ways to stay proactive during the slower months of July, August, and September. Keeping activity and engagement as strong as possible during that stretch.

Every golf course seems to have an “off season.”

That’s true. You’re either a northern course or a southern course, and both come with challenges. Down here, our busy season comes with shorter daylight hours, which limits how much golf you can fit into a day. Up north, when it’s busy, they might have 12 or even 15 hours of daylight. It’s just a different set of constraints. Every course has challenges - if there were a place without any, that would be an easy job to take.

Before we wrap up, is there anything else you’d like people at The Great Outdoors to know?

I really want to say thank you to Chuck. He’s set me up for success in a big way. Everyone I’ve talked to has nothing but great things to say about him, and I can see why. He’s been incredibly helpful during this transition, walking me through the operation and making sure everything goes smoothly. And he’s not disappearing overnight. This isn’t a hard stop where he’s suddenly gone. He’s staying involved and available, which makes the transition even easier.

We’re sure you’ve seen how connected he is to the staff and the community.

Absolutely. One thing that really stood out to me was after the Christmas sale, when he handed out gifts to the golf shop staff - each gift had a personalized note explaining why he chose that gift for that person. That told me everything I needed to know about the relationships he’s built here. That kind of connection doesn’t happen by accident.

That sets a pretty high bar.

It does - but it’s also inspiring. It shows the culture that already exists here, and I’m excited to be part of it and to build on it.

With Garret taking over the role of Head Golf Professional, it appears The Great Outdoors is clearly in good hands. Grounded, thoughtful, and deeply respectful of the foundation that currently exists, Garret brings both fresh energy and a steady confidence, the combination that should make for a seamless transition and an exciting future for our course. Florida Sandhill Cranes: Natural History, Current Research, and Living with Cranes Tim Dellinger

Tim Dellinger is a wildlife biologist originally from western North Carolina. He holds a B.S. in Biology from Appalachian State University and an M.S. in Wildlife and Fisheries Resources from West Virginia University.

Before joining the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) in 2008, Tim worked as a research partner on projects involving northern saw-whet owls in the southern Appalachians, American swallow-tailed kites and short-tailed hawks in Florida, and wood thrush in West Virginia.

Prescribed Burns - What are They and What to Expect?

What exactly is a “Prescribed Burn”? Living in TGO you have, no doubt, heard the term more than a few times, but what does the term actually mean? A Prescribed burn or fire is a planned fire used to meet management objectives.

Did you know fire can be good for people, wildlife, and the land? After many years of fire exclusion, an ecosystem that needs periodic fire becomes unhealthy. Trees are stressed by overcrowding; fire-dependent species disappear; and flammable fuels build up and become hazardous. The right fire at the right place at the right time: • Reduces hazardous fuels, protecting human communities from extreme fires.

• Minimizes the spread of pest insects and disease.

• Removes unwanted species that threaten species native.

• Provides forage for wildlife.

• Improves habitat for threatened and endangered species.

• Recycles nutrients back to the soil; and • Promotes the growth of trees, wildflowers, and other plants.

More prescribed fires mean fewer extreme wildfires. Specialists write burn plans for prescribed fires. Burn plans identify – or prescribe – the best conditions under which trees and other plants will burn to get the best results safely. Burn plans consider temperature, humidity, wind, moisture of the vegetation, and conditions for the dispersal of smoke. Prescribed fire specialists compare conditions on the ground to those outlined in burn plans before deciding whether to burn on a given day. These specialists from the Florida Forest Service and St. John’s River Water Management District are currently in the planning stages for the next prescribed burn here at TGO. Each prescribed burn has a specific desired result and in the case of the recent burn here at TGO, the result was to burn off the many years of dead and decayed organic material laying on the forest floor. It was a foot or more thick in many areas. This can cause fire to spread through this material making it difficult to extinguish. It may smolder for weeks, although it may not result in active flame production. Once this material has been burned the healing process begins for the forest.

What does it take to have a prescribed burn at TGO? Before any planning begins the CSA and Firewise collaborate with the Florida Forest Service (FFS), Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC), St. John’s River Water Management District (SJRWMD), Brevard County Fire Rescue (BCFR), US Fish and Wildlife Service to determine which areas of TGO are candidates for a prescribed burn. In the case of the areas behind the Library, we have been working for several years to have this area completed. So, as you can see, this is a somewhat long process. We are fortunate to have a close working relationship with all of these agencies, and they have been a tremendous help in getting the necessary permits and permissions to first have our fire breaks recut, at no cost to the community, and to have these agencies perform the prescribed burns also at no cost to the community.

Before a prescribed burn is planned, a Mitigation Team comes to the site and walks it to determine if it meets the criteria necessary for a burn. We here at TGO are fortunate in having all of these agencies in full agreement with our plan for these prescribed burns. A burn plan is a written document that helps the burn manager or burn boss ensure a safe and effective prescribed burn. The burn plan’s essential function is to identify burn objectives and provide procedures to accomplish them safely.

A plan should be crafted well in advance of any burning. A burn plan may be written by, in our case the FFS Mitigation Team burn planner or the burn boss. Most burn plans contain similar elements, but they may vary in the level of detail for each element.

This includes gathering adequate equipment and personnel, properly preparing the site before the burn, and making sure that everyone involved understands the plan and is able to communicate it to neighbors and the public. In addition to one or more site visits, data collected from satellite or aerial photos, maps as well as topography maps and information on any previous burns are used in development of the plan. Weather condition predictions, soil moisture content, humidity, temperature, wind direction, and speed are just some of the factors used, as well as the size and species of trees and thickness of decaying material. In the case of TGO, the proximity to dwellings is a major consideration.

Once the Mitigation Team burn planners determine a date, usually around 24 hours before the burn is to take place, they notify TGO of the time and place of the burn, then the notification process begins. It should be noted that the burn can and will be canceled up to the start of the actual burn, if conditions change and the burn boss determines it is no longer safe to continue.

On the day of the prescribed burn, all of the agencies involved meet in the Manor parking lot. The Mitigation Team reviews the data one last time, and the agencies are given assignments, the data is checked one last time and a start window is determined. The teams are dispatched to their locations and once the window opens, the first fires are lit. This year the team did a strip type burn. The fires were started in the area that had been burned last year and burned toward the unburned areas. Fires were started in horizontal strips, which made them easier to control.

They will let some areas continue to burn on the interior of the burn area and extinguish the perimeter fires that continue to burn actively as well as any fires burning in trees. Palm trees accumulate pine needles in the frond boots which cause them to burn very actively for a short time, making it look like the tree is in full blaze.

After the fire is out and mop-up complete, a small crew will stay for a while to watch for spot fires. When there are no longer visible fires, they may leave and return from time to time to check the area for any fires which may have reignited.

After the burn is completed there will be smoke for as much as a few weeks or more. The old adage of “where there is smoke, there is fire” is not always true with smoldering organic material on the ground. We need to be aware that small amounts of smoke on the interior of a burn area are not necessarily causes for alarm. Even a few small flames on the interior of the area are not necessarily a problem.

Flames around the perimeter of the burn area or large amounts of flames producing sparks that are moving out of the burn area are cause for notifying the fire department. As general guidance, notify the CSA Office or Front Gate after hours, if you believe there is an active fire inside the burn area.

We will continue to have prescribed burns every few years to try to preserve our natural areas and prevent larger wildfires.

FLORIDA JANE

From Canada to TGO, a life defined by kindness, community, and showing up

If you’ve spent any time around TGO, chances are you’ve met Jane - or at least heard of her. Known affectionately as “Florida Jane,” she is one of those people who quietly becomes part of the fabric of a community. From Canada, Jane discovered TGO while looking for a warm place in the winter - and stayed because of the people. Through personal loss, volunteering, and countless acts of kindness both here and back home, Jane has built a life rooted in service, connection, and the belief that little things truly do make a difference.

Jane, I think you might be the first Canadian resident we’ve interviewed, where do you live when in Canada?

I live in a golf course community in the community of Camlachie, Ontario, which is 20 minutes from the border to cross into Michigan at Port Huron.

Have you lived there all your life?

No, I was born in Toronto, and moved there after I got married, to the town of Sarnia, actually, which is right across from Port Huron, Michigan. Blair, my husband, worked in Sarnia, and we ended up living there for 12 years. Then he got transferred to Calgary, Alberta, and we lived there for another 12 years. After he retired from that job,we came back to Sarnia.

Okay, let’s back up a bit, when you were in high school, what type of things were you interested in?

Sports mainly, volleyball, track and basketball. Those were the three things I was good at.

After high school, where did you go?

So, I graduated in Grade 12. They have Grade 13, but I didn’t do academic. I did commercial, what they called commercial back then. I’ve only ever looked for a job twice in my career. One was my first job, I was interviewed at the government and at a bank.

I thought there’d be more opportunities at the government, so I chose that - and there was. They immediately hired me, and the second time I had to look for a job was when I we moved to Calgary and I interviewed for a job to work for the president of two oil companies.

What did you do when you work for the government?

When I first started, when I was 19, I worked in data input. From there I went into the assessment department, and looked after the chairman of assessment. So I became an executive assistant, and that was my title throughout my career.

And how did you meet Blair?

I met him through his sister, who started the same day I did at the government.

When I was in Toronto, just before we got married, I worked for the president of the Hospital for Sick Children. It is a major pediatric academic hospital. That’s when we got married, and I’ll be honest with you, when I went from living in downtown Toronto, to Sarnia, I thought I died and gone to hell. Toronto was big, bustling, busy, lots of things to do and see, and eat and everything.

Sarnia had nothing. Sarnia is mainly a lot of refineries.

When Blair took a job with ICG Propane - in Sarnia, somebody who knew me from the Hospital for Sick Children contacted Nova Chemicals, which is one of the bigger refineries in Sarnia.

This person said they should hire me and they did. Throughout my entire career, that’s how it would go. Somebody would call somebody and tell them they should hire me.

When Blair got transferred to Calgary, someone told the president of Nova Chemicals that I was coming and that’s how I ended up working for him. I always had very good relationships with the people I worked for.

What did Blair do for ICG? He worked in the oil and gas industry. He sold and marketed butane and propane. He was with ICG Propane. After he retired, he continued consulting.

...and I’ll be honest with you, when I went from living in downtown Toronto to Sarnia, I thought I died and gone to hell.

So how did you two discover TGO? That was in January of 2014. Blair found it through the Good Sam Club. We had no idea what we were coming into. We had a brandnew motorhome and just wanted to go to Florida. I instantly liked this place. One of the first couples we met were Bud and Schelley Carroll. We were across from them on Windsong. Our plan was to stay for two weeks, but we ended staying for a month. Then we came back in the fall, and we stayed on Windsong.

Then we met Gail and Cliff Stevens who were from London, Ontario, who lived at 476 Fawn Trail. They wanted to buy a house, so they invited us over, and we decided to buy their place on Fawn - where I am now.

Your story doesn’t sound too much different from others here in the park - Come for a visit and stay a lifetime.

Well, I just love it here. The people are so nice. I have two stories to relate that show why I love it here so much.

In 2015, I had a bicycle accident. I got a bug underneath my sunglasses, closed my eyes for just a second to get it out, and hit a recycling box on the corner of Plantation and Oak Cove. I landed on the front yard with the bike on top of me - so I blacked out.

This lady came along, and she said, “Are you okay?” I said, “Yeah, I think so.” When I tried to get up, my leg went sideways. So, they called the ambulance, and they took me to Parrish, x-rayed it and told me I had broken the tibia and fibula and that it had to be operated on within five day. The cost was $150,000 to operate on it here or I could go home.

Luckily, our Canadian insurance covered everything. So, on the fifth day, a private jet flew in to take me to Port Huron, Michigan. There was an ambulance there from Sarnia waiting to take me to the hospital.

But having said that, those five days I was here, I was never alone a minute. People were there around the clock to help me.

They fed me. They helped me get to the bathroom. Everything I needed, someone was there to help. That was the first inkling to me that I was in the right place. These people were amazing.

We do think that a sense of community is one thing that does set TGO apart from other communities. You said you had two stories…

So, the next year, when we came down, Blair died very suddenly of a pulmonary aneurysm in the motorhome - it was February 1. He told me he wasn’t feeling well, said I should call 911, then went into the bathroom and that was it. He was gone. My neighbors across the road, Jimmy and Jeannie Fortin, heard the sound of the ambulance tires and came out, and I was apparently sitting on the road. And for the first three days, I sat in my sunroom and people came from 9:00 in the morning until 9:00 at night. They never left me. They brought food, they sat with me, kept me company, helped with arrangements. It was amazing. I stayed until the end of the season, because what was I going to do at home?

Amazing how generous and kind people here can be.

It was after that when I started getting into volunteering here in the park and start helping others.

Do you remember Barb Myers? She was the one who started the Nature Center flea markets. She lived on Plantation, and her RV garage was the storage for all the items for the flea market. I walked in to the Manor when they were setting up and asked if I could help. She said, “We need bakers.” I said, “I’m sorry. That is one thing in life I can’t do. I can’t bake. But I can go to the store, and I can buy something, and I’ll put it in pretty packages.” And that was the start of me doing the flea markets.

It’s been nine years that I’ve been doing the Nature Center flea markets, and I help at the church flea market as well for WIC.

I would be remiss if I did not mention Bill Shaw. I try to follow his example. Something in a small way, every day. He had such an impact on my life. I used to go to his house almost every day with stuff that I’d find, or that people would give me. I also helped with the cancer luncheon. I was an angel at the Twin Lakes Delight, and I used to sit open houses for Ann Patch West.

Well, we know you’ve been a great volunteer for several causes in this resort. It’s an important roll.

Thank you, but I really cannot thank the volunteers who work along side of me enough for all their hard work. You know, we have a good time and I always try to have a happy hour for them afterwards.

It was after that when I started getting into volunteering here in the park...

So, what do you do volunteer back to Canada?

I volunteer at the food bank. I do random acts of kindness, not every day, but every week. I find something that I can donate to, or go and visit, or do something. I’m very cognizant of helping others. And that was Bill’s influence.

My nextdoor neighbor lost her husband recently, so I prepared for her the 12 days of Christmas, creating 12 packages for her. Every morning, she opens one and sends me a picture of what she found today. Little things can make a difference.

My superpower, though, is that I love being able to find things for people. Somebody comes to me and says, “Jane, I need this.” It’s the thrill of the hunt, and I can find it. But I’m not as busy back home as I am here.

There is certainly a strong entourage of Canadians who winter here in TGO. Do you know most of them?

Some of them I do. I’ve run into a lot of people from Quebec and Ontario in here, and have become close friends with many. I’m always surprised how many people know me.

I know you know Cliff and Helen - Cliff is the one who nicknamed me Florida Jane! And it stuck! That’s okay, I kinda like it.

So tell us about why you are always with a different dog.

I guess I have become the TGO Dog Watcher. There are several I watch for my friends. Sometimes more than one, but I always find someone to help me out. Right now I am watching Maggie, from Ontario, I have her for a month. She loves to walk - I think we have walked every street in TGO. It’s great exercise for me.

Anything else you want to add?

No. I think you’re all done in my brain. I’m just very honored too be included in The Happenings.

We’re happy that you joined us also, we’ll see how honored you really are when the money shows up in our checking account.

Employee of the Quarter

Randy Hendershott If you’ve enjoyed breakfast at The Blue Heron lately - and especially during this extraordinarily busy season - there’s a good chance Randy Hendershott had a hand in it.

This quarter, The Great Outdoors is proud to recognize Randy Hendershott as Employee of the Quarter, honoring not just the meals he prepares, but the steady leadership he brings to the heart of the Blue Heron kitchen every single day.

Randy has served as Lead Cook for the past three years, a period that hasn’t always been easy behind the scenes. During that time, the restaurant experienced the turnover of three managers - changes that could have disrupted operations and morale.

Instead, the kitchen stayed focused, organized, and moving forward.

That consistency didn’t happen by accident.

Each time leadership shifted, Randy quietly stepped up - without hesitation and without complaint.

He kept the kitchen running smoothly, ensured orders went out on time, and helped the back-of-house team stay motivated even when schedules were tight and the pressure was high. When there was a gap in the cook schedule, Randy was the first to fill it, often working longer hours to make sure the team didn’t miss a beat.

“Randy doesn’t just cook good food,” one colleague shared. “He leads by example.”

Calm under pressure and unfailingly dependable, Randy has become the person everyone counts on especially during the current banquet season. Just ask Dawn England and the front-of-house team, who rely heavily on his steady presence and ability to keep everything moving behind the scenes. With more than 40 years of experience in the food and beverage industry, Randy brings a quiet confidence that’s rare - and invaluable - particularly during times of transition.

His impact shows up in small but telling ways. Earlier this summer, when the quality of employee boxed lunches became a concern, the solution turned out to be simple: hand the task to Randy. Almost immediately, the meals improved - proof that experience, care, and attention to detail make all the difference.

When Randy does step away from the kitchen, he knows exactly how he wants to spend his time - talking proudly about his wife and daughter, and especially his grandsons, whom he adores. He’s also a self-professed science fiction enthusiast and a big Disney fan, interests that hint at the creativity and imagination he brings into his work.

On behalf of the entire CSA team and the Board, The Great Outdoors extends sincere thanks to Randy Hendershott for keeping the Blue Heron kitchen steady, strong, and welcoming - day in and day out.

Funny Thing Is… Resolution For Resolutions “A New Year’s resolution is something that goes in one year and out the other.” That’s a quote and is usually true. I used to make resolutions every year. Lose 10 pounds by Valentine’s Day, call a friend I haven’t talked to in a decade, or read more, etc. At the next new year I would look back to see how I did. The problem is, since I passed 60 years old I can’t remember what my resolutions were 12 months ago. So, this year as a public service I’ve decided my only New Year’s resolution would be to help you with your resolutions.

My first piece of advice to ensure total success is to recommend you make a resolution to break all your New Year’s resolutions. This guarantees success no matter what you do.

My second piece of advice is DON’T resolve to lose weight but rather to look slimmer in your circle of friends by March 1. To make sure this happens go out and buy each of those friends the nicest box of rich dark chocolate truffles you can find for Valentine’s Day. Fourteen days later, on March 1, take a picture with them. You’ll be the skinny one with the devilish grin.

Third, resolve to read more. No, don’t go out and buy War and Piece but instead turn the closed caption on for your TV. Resolution achieved and you never had to leave your lounge chair. My fourth recommendation is don’t resolve to learn more about the explosion of technology around you but instead offer to babysit those elementary school grandkids more, buy them tablets for Christmas, then just watch how they do it. Oh, you can go to a tech blog, authored by tech geeks, written at the level to teach other geeks. No, at our age it’s best to keep things simple, so let the grandkids teach you. You’ll look like “Grandparents of the Year” while passing your own kids in techno savvy since they don’t think they can learn anything from elementary school kids.

Our decades of experience have taught us better. So my last piece of advice is, if you have to make a resolution for the new year, make it something that you can definitely succeed at. Like maybe you can resolve to give up underwater bungee jumping.

Our New Lawn Treatment Company At the most recent TGO District Board meeting on December 17, board members and residents were given an overview of Turf Masters, the soil and turf service company now contracted to manage lawn care throughout The Great Outdoors. Representatives from Turf Masters attended the meeting to explain who they are, outline the scope of their services, and discuss how their approach will be applied across the community. Those present included Michael Zubillaga, Divisional Training Coordinator; Jennifer Zubillaga, Outside Sales Coordinator; Bruce Ludlum, Melbourne Branch Manager; and Jason Synowski, Regional Director.

What follows is a brief summary of the services Turf Masters will be providing at The Great Outdoors, based on information shared during the District Board meeting. This overview is followed by a Q&A session with Michael Zubillaga, Divisional Training Coordinator for Turf Master, who addressed questions and offered additional clarification on how their program will be implemented across the community.

A New Chapter in Lawn Care at The Great Outdoors Maintaining the look and feel of The Great Outdoors is no small undertaking - particularly when it involves caring for more than 1,600 individual lawns spread throughout the community.

With that in mind, TGO has entered into a new agreement with Turf Masters, a soil and turf service company that will now be responsible for lawn treatment across the resort.

This change represents a shift in how lawn maintenance will be approached going forward, with an emphasis on consistency, long-term turf health, and professional oversight.

Who Is Turf Masters?

Turf Masters is a company that specializes specifically in soil and turf management. In reviewing their methods and scope of services, what stands out is a focus on soil conditions and nutrient balance rather than broad, one-size-fits-all applications.

Their approach centers on addressing underlying soil health as a way to support stronger, more resilient lawns particularly important in Florida’s heat and changing seasonal conditions.

The intent of the program appears to be long-term improvement - reducing common issues such as thinning, patchiness, and weed pressure over time rather than relying on quick fixes.

Michael, thank you for taking the time to speak with us. Lawn care is a topic of interest for many residents at The Great Outdoors. To start, could you tell us a bit about your background and your role at Turf Masters?

I work in the corporate side, specifically training and support. I report into Turf Masters Brands and work with HR, training, and regional leadership. My wife, Jennifer Zubillaga is local here in the Melbourne area and works directly with customers and programs.

When did Turf Masters start, and how did it grow?

Turf Masters started around 2002, founded by Andy Kadrich out of Roswell, Georgia. The company grew by expanding organically around Atlanta, then purchasing and integrating medium-sized lawn care companies into the business.

You mentioned Turf Masters company and the Melbourne branch. What’s the relationship?

Turf Masters later merged with Green Group. Once the organization became large enough, we maintained separate operating companies - Turf Masters and Green Group - but created an umbrella organization called Turf Masters Brands.

That umbrella is where functions like HR, training, accounting, and regional leadership are housed. Local branches continue operating with their own people and customers, but gain more support through the larger organization.

Yes, it is. We have a company agronomist who supports the entire organization. He has two degrees and is deeply trained in soil and plant science. He’s based in Dothan, Alabama, originally from Florida, so he understands Florida soils and weather patterns. Soil samples and problem cases can be sent to him so we can diagnose issues and recommend solutions with more precision.

What kinds of issues do soil tests reveal?

Soil tests show whether the turf is missing something - or has too much of something. In this community, one of the big issues we saw was extremely high levels of certain micronutrients that can create staining and soil lock-up.

What service do you think would make the biggest difference in repairing our lawns?

Mechanical aeration - hands down. It’s one of the best things you can do because it’s not “adding chemicals;” it’s improving the soil’s ability to breathe and absorb water and nutrients. Aeration pulls plugs out of compacted soil, opening pathways for oxygen, water, and nutrients to reach the root zone more efficiently. It can also improve drainage.

The Architectural Review Committee meets for planning purposes on the Plantation Manor Porch at 10:00am on Monday, December 29, 2025.

Application Review Agenda: Approve field approvals, old business, non-compliance violations, new business, adjorn.

All changes to your property that are visible on the outside require advance approval from the Architectural Review Committee. Application forms and ARC Guidelines may be obtained from the Community Services Association office or printed from The Great Outdoors Community Services Association website at www.tgocsa.org. All completed ARC forms must be submitted to the CSA office by Noon on the Wednesday before the next Wednesday meeting. Results will be available to pick up after the ARC meeting or from the CSA Office.

Be sure ALL necessary paperwork is included with your ARC application. No approval will be given without having all the required data available at the ARC Meeting for review.

The Architectural Review Committee (ARC) will provide owners with a clear understanding of what is allowed and when ARC approval is needed. Gaining ARC approval is facilitated through a responsive process that is easy to use.

The ARC Guidelines and Application Form are available for download at TGOCSA.org or you can also pick up an application in the CSA Office Monday, Wednesday or Friday from 8:00am until 5:00pm. Applications must be submitted to the CSA Office by 12:00 Noon on the Wednesday prior to the following Wednesday meeting date to be considered at that meeting.

CSA Trash Pick Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the process efficient, please follow these rules: • Trash must be placed in plastic bags that are tied closed.

Lightweight bags should be tied together. Trash that is not in plastic bags may not be picked up.

• Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag.

• Place trash within one foot of the road so it’s within easy reach.

• Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag.

• Put trash out at the curb by 10:00am - Pick-up time varies within the park.

• Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials.

• Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals.

• Also, be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch!

CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility - 321-264-5009. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc., that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station 321-264-5048.

Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property

Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.

We are looking to fill three positions. This committee helps provide landscaping and beautification project planning for CSA and is also responsible for the general health of the lakes within the community. If you have expertise in landscaping design (especially in Florida), lake biology, or simply want to contribute to making TGO better looking, please stop by the CSA office and pick up an application.

Safety & Security Committee

They are looking for a committee member. This committee monitors the safety, security and communications operations in TGO to assure this is a safe community for our residents, guests and employees. The Committee periodically inspects CSA facilities to insure compliance with established safety and security practices and procedures to identify potential safety hazards and security concerns and recommends policies and/or actions to the Board.

Human Resources Committee

They are looking for a committee member. This Committee works with the CSA Manager on the development and implementation of CSA human resource policies and procedures, and serves as an advisor to the CSA Board and the CSA Manager on human resource policies and procedures.

TGO Community Channel 732 Our television channel of the Community Services Association will be active for broadcasting board meetings. Your TV must be equipped with a Spectrum TV cable box or digital adapter.

Turf Masters regularly applies spray applications to our lawns and common areas that includes an herbicide for weed control, a liquid fertilizer, a granular nitrogen fertilizer and an insecticide to kill chinch bugs, and other turf-damaging insects.

Turf Masters is also offering “service-call” visits to TGO. If you are still having problems with lawn pests or weeds, call the CSA Office at 321-268-9767, and we will put your address on the Turf Masters list.

Guide to Living With Alligators in TGO

There are 32 lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby:

• It is illegal to feed, taunt or harass an alligator.

• Do not swim or wade in any of our lakes.

• Do not walk near the shorelines and do not walk your pets near the shoreline.

• Do not allow your pets to swim, exercise or drink in or near our lakes.

• While alligators can be active at any time, they are most active between dusk and dawn and move during the night to different water sources.

• Please give our alligators the respect and space they deserve.

NOTE: If you come across an aggressive alligator, please contact the CSA Office prior to SNAP and allow us to handle any situation.

Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks.

AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts.

The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next.

Join Our Pickleball Group Pickleball offers a fun, social way to stay active while being easy on the joints and accessible to players of all ages and fitness levels. It improves balance, coordination, and cardiovascular health without requiring intense physical strain. With its smaller court and simple rules, pickleball is quick to learn and encourages friendly competition and community connection.

You can borrow equipment from the Plantation Manor CSA Office Monday - Friday 8:00am to 3:00pm. For more information: tgopickleballclubboard@gmail.com. Lessons are offered every Wednesday from 2-4pm.
