Happy Holidays, Everyone!

These past few weeks have been busy with recruiting meetings, interviews and phone calls as we worked to hire the best candidates for several important positions, including Golf Professional, Recreation Manager and Restaurant Manager. I’m happy to share that we’ve selected Garret Howell as our new Golf Professional. Garret’s first day was Monday, and he spent this week training with Chuck, meeting many of our golfers and learning our golf systems. Please help me welcome Garret to our team. I hope to share more good recruiting news on our Recreation Manager and Restaurant Manager positions very soon.

I want to give a BIG shout-out to our Blue Heron team. They are hosting many catered holiday parties right now. This past Sunday evening our restaurant hosted a holiday party for The Latin Club of Titusville. My wife is originally from Colombia, and a member of the Latin Club, so I attended the party as her guest. Everyone who attended the party in The Nest was pleased with the food and service provided by our Blue Heron. I was so proud to hear their positive feedback. There are many local restaurants who are willing to host holiday parties, but the Latin Club chose us. Community events such as this serve to supplement the Blue Heron business and help keep our staff gainfully employed year-round.

I have one housekeeping item to share with our owners related to food and drink on our pool decks. Our rule states “Food and beverages are prohibited in the pools, and glass containers are prohibited in the deck areas.” Last week I contacted our state pool inspector to appeal this rule, and it turns out this rule is part of a Florida State Statute. Our pools are listed as public, not private, because we allow guests to use them. Florida statute prohibits drinks from being consumed in a public pool or on the “wet deck” which is measured as four feet from the pool. Blue Heron is occasionally offering food and beverage service at The Manor pool, and occasionally people bring food and drinks with them while lounging at the pools, so it’s important that I clarify this rule and statute. Courtesy Patrol will enforce this rule, so if you wish to drink while at the pool, simply make sure it is not in a glass container, and keep it four feet away from the pool, and you will be in compliance with our existing rule and state statute. Thank you!

Christmas Day and New Year’s Day fall on Thursdays this year, and our offices will be closed on these two holidays. Please be aware that on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, the CSA office and Recreation Office will close at 12:00pm, and the Golf Shop and Blue Heron will close at 2:00pm to allow our staff a little extra time with family during these holidays. We will be open on both Fridays, December 26 and January 2 for normal business hours following the holidays.

The next issue of The Happenings will circulate on December 26, the day after Christmas. I sincerely wish you and your families a blessed, joyful and peaceful holiday!

Sincerely,

December 12 - 3:00 to 6:00pm

BETTY SALTER TAKES THE HELM AS NATURE CENTER PRESIDENT

POND AQUARIUM - NATURE CENTER’S NEWEST EXHIBIT

Our 32 lakes are teeming with aquatic life!

Now, thanks to a brainstorm by Nature Center President Betty Salter and Lake Committee volunteer Ron Peoples, you can peek below the water’s surface with the Nature Center’s new Pond Aquarium.

The Nature Center at The Great Outdoors is pleased to announce Betty Salter as the center’s new president. Betty brings a wealth of knowledge, personal contacts and experience to the Nature Center, with an impressive background in education, wildlife knowledge, and groundbreaking work at the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge. Here at TGO she dedicates tireless work as a TGO Wildlife Rescue and Nature Center Trail Guide, and spent years rescuing wildlife at TGO and the surrounding area. She has also led the Nature Center Trail hikes every Monday and Wednesday during “the season” for over 10 years.

A DEDICATED VOLUNTEER

Last summer, Betty Salter found an old donated aquarium and, fishnet in hand, explored the edges of TGO ponds to capture a sample of the underwater world around us. She and Ron wanted to create an exhibit to help people learn about the health and aquatic life of our ponds.

Betty’s career began in education, where she was with the school board and an exceptional education teacher assistant. In 1999 she began working for Parks and Recreation, North Area Parks Operation Office, where she initiated many innovative programs. She and her late husband Cary retired in February

residents. The aquarium is a balanced ecosystem filled with native fish, snails, shrimp, insects and plants. Minimal cleaning is required, as the aquarium residents work together, as they do in nature, to keep their home clean. The fish are fed once each day, but they also eat the shrimp and plant material. Snails and fish clean the algae on the sides of the tank.

tours, and to re-introduce golf cart tours of the Blue Heron Water Treatment Plant. Betty realizes many of our TGO residents work during the week, and she hopes to have Saturday morning hikes and more weekend programs.

A true life-learner, Betty’s passion is to share the joy of nature with others, whether it’s knowledge of plants, wildlife, wildlife rescue and preservation, or simply the general love of being outdoors.

Betty has devoted over 7,000 hours of volunteer time to the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. A friend at the refuge encouraged her to consider living in TGO. Betty and Cary moved to The Great Outdoors in October of 2014, and immediately became immersed with The Nature Center. Betty had known Sandy Juba for some time, as Sandy volunteered at the refuge as well. Their great friendship and desire to rescue and teach others about wildlife and nature took off from there.

Most of our ponds are connected indirectly to the St. John’s river or the Addison Canal. With a handful of volunteers, she collected all sorts of interesting specimens. Betty discovered, to her delight, that our ponds are filled with a healthy variety of fish, plant and crustacean life.

The Pond Aquarium is located in the Nature Center. Chairs are set up in front of the aquarium, where you’ll find information sheets with photos and descriptions of the aquarium

Betty jokes that one of the first steps to get involved with wildlife rescue, at Sandy’s insistence, was to overcome her fear of snakes. After researching snakes for many months and creating brochures about them, she overcame her fears, and has frequently rescued many of them! She also became very active with Firewise. Betty initiated the Spring Festival at the Nature Center. She previously developed large festivals for the county and wanted to develop a smaller festival here. Sandy Juba gave Betty a list of local vendors to contact, and the annual festival was launched, continues to grow and become a fund

Here is a sample the species you’ll find in the tank: Mosquitofish eat the larva of mosquitoes and are used to help control mosquitoes.

Sailfin Molly are omnivores, with a diet consisting of algae, crustaceans and insects.

Betty’s nature expertise includes extensive studies of native Florida plants and insects. One of her many butterfly studies led to the discovery of new species not known to our area. (The Variegated Fritillary was not known to be in Brevard County and the Eastern Pygmy Blue was not expected to be west of I-95 but we have it in the marsh here!) Betty’s goals are to develop programs to get more people involved with the nature center’s hikes, displays and talks.

PLANS FOR THE NATURE CENTER

Ideas she plans to implement include nature golf cart tours in the community, Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival bird

American Flagfish are micropredators eating small invertebrates, zooplankton, algae and other plant material. Marsh Killfish are omnivores found in marine environments as well as fresh water.

Least Killfish are the smallest North American fish, eat aquatic worms, crustaceans and some plant matter.

Sheepshead Minnows eat plant matter, algae, detritus, small invertebrates and mosquito larvae. The EPA uses them to determine pollution levels in some bodies of water. Swamp Darters eat small invertebrates including fly larvae, small crustaceans (amphipods, copepods) and worms.

GUIDED TRAIL HIKES / LIGHT TRAIL MAINTENANCE

The end of March wraps up our busy season at TGO. There will be fewer scheduled trail activities, however feel free to contact Brian and he’ll be happy to take anyone for a hike. The trails are in great shape and the dry season helps immensely with mosquitos so it’s a great time of year for hikes!

Betty explored many TGO ponds, the Addison Canal and the drainage canal alongside the Nature Trail to find a wide variety of aquatic life along the shallow edges. She plans to continue to gather more species. The fish in the aquarium represent the feeder fish of the pond… the ones the bigger fish eat. Her hopes are to eventually catch a baby large mouth bass, catfish, bream or other angler fish or bottom feeder.

May 27 is the average start to our rainy season in Florida, so the St. Johns river is very low now, opening up lots of nearby hiking and mountain biking!

POSSUM RESCUE EFFORT

Special thanks to Nancy Clark and Sandy Juba (Animal Rescue Committee) for their help March 19 & 20. After a concert at the Manor, Donna Pittman came upon an injured opossum who sadly was left for dead in the road. The opossum was bleeding and struggling. Donna called Nancy, who quickly came to its rescue.  Nancy gave the sweet possum

Unfortunately, her nets have also brought up invasive species. Alongside the Pond Aquarium, she has created an Invasive Species tank. Here, you will find invasive fish such as Tilapia and Mayan Ciclid. There is also the shell of the invasive Apple snail, as well as the Hydrilla plant. “The Hydrilla is an invasive weed that entered into Florida waterways due to the aquarium trade,” says Betty Salter. “This weed has played havoc with ecosystems and boating as the dense weed can severely entangle a boat propeller.”

comfort overnight, and the next day Sandy took it to a rehabber in Christmas. The rehabber discovered the female possum had a broken jaw, with injured babies in its pouch. Sadly, the mother had to be euthanized and two babies are clinging to life. We are heartbroken about the outcome for this sweet family of opossums, but grateful for compassionate people among us

SPECIAL TORTOISEVILLE ADVENTURE

While little Lucy Antichos was visiting Grandma Sarah Sennett, she took several nature tours. On one tour they stopped at Tortoiseville, where a tortoise posed with her for a picture.

Join us at the Canaveral National Seashore on Sunday, December 21 to watch the sun rise over the Atlantic Ocean. December 21 is the shortest day of the year - the Winter Solstice. The days start getting longer with more sun, so it is a great reason to celebrate. The park opens at 6:00am, meet at 6:45am (or earlier) Parking Lot #1 at Playalinda Beach. The sun will rise at 7:11am but the sky usually lights up with gorgeous colors long before that. Bring some coffee, your camera, walk the beach, watch birds, look for whales. Come and enjoy the “longest stretch of undeveloped Atlantic coastline in Florida.” Entry fees apply. Text Patty Smith 248-390-0680 if you have questions.

TGO FIREWISE INFORMATION

RESIDENTS REDUCING WILDFIRE RISKS

Visit tgocsa.org to view Firewise video and brochure or TGO Firewise on Facebook

Remember, you must have written permission to remove any living shrubs or trees beyond your property line. Contact CSA if you have questions about removal and consult the Architectural Review Board before making landscape changes.

Have a Fire Safe Holiday!

While December is the leading month for U.S. home fires, and Christmas Day and Christmas Eve being the second and third leading days for cooking fires, in 2024, we should not limit our fire safety concerns to just the home.

While we at TGO do not have many, if any, wood burning fireplaces, and open fires are prohibited, it is worth remembering that ashes must be disposed of in a fireproof container until it is cold and spread out on the ground so they will continue to cool. Use fireplaces sparingly: Be cautious with the use of fireplaces, as they can pose a fire risk when combined with combustible decorations.

Stay Attentive: Never leave cooking food unattended, especially in large family gatherings with cross-kitchens.

Avoid Turkey Fryers Indoors: The Consumer Product Safety Commission discourages the use of turkey fryers at home and urges those who prefer fried turkey to seek out professional establishments or consider using an oil-less turkey fryer.

Thoroughly Thaw Frozen Turkeys: A frozen turkey can cause a fire if dropped into oil, so it is important to thaw it in the refrigerator before deep-frying.

Keep Trees Well-Watered, if using a cut or live tee. Ensure your Christmas trees are well-watered to prevent them from becoming a fire hazard. Git rid of your tree once it becomes dry to avoid fire hazard.

Check all of the exterior Christmas lights just as you do for the interior lights. Look for broken or frayed wiring and damaged plugs. Make sure they are “exterior” lights. If using exterior lights to drape or wrap something make sure the bulbs do not get too hot for the material they may contact.

Candles offer dramatic holiday lighting, and as with any other open flame, use caution when placing them and ensure they are on a stable base to prevent tipping over. They should always be at least twelve inches from anything that burns. Always extinguish candles when leaving a room. When going to bed, extinguish all candles. Consider using battery-powered candles as an alternative.

For the interior lighting, inspect them just as with the exterior lights and make sure they are rated for interior use as well as UL-Listed. Limit the number of strands of lights to three to prevent overheating. One-third of home decoration fires are started by candles according to the national Fire Protection Association.

Remember, extension cords are intended for temporary use. Ensure they are in good condition with no broken insulation or damaged plugs. Use only UL-Listed lights and extension cords. The proliferation of many cheap light sets and extension cords that are not UL-Listed makes this especially important. When in doubt, throw it out. When using extension cords, never run them under rugs as that can cause a buildup of heat.

Turn off Christmas lights when you are not home.

Did you check your smoke detectors and replace the batteries when the time changed or whenever you perform your semi-annual check and battery replacement? Now is a good time to get on a schedule. Another thing to remember, smoke detectors should be replaced every 10 years. If you do not have one, now is a good time to think about developing a emergency escape plan for your home, suite, or RV.

Remember, Christmas tree fires cause an average of 160 home fires each year and cause $10 million in direct property damage. Protect your loved ones and home this season with these safety tips.

Be Fire Safe and have a Safe Holiday Season.

TGO Christmas

This year’s Christmas Golf Cart Parade boasted 65 entries with some exceptional cart designs. We were well represented by Santas - one at the beginning and one at the end of the parade and a couple of them in between. The first place trophy went to the “Mackey Cart” (right) - well deserved for a creative job. Second place “Castle Cart” (above) belonging to Rick and Terry Mason. Third place was the “Gingerbread House Cart” (top above) created by Sunny Day and Kim Retherford - which, by the way, smelled great!

Golf C t P ade

As always, Molly (above top) was the best dressed dog and - we’re not sure what dinosaurs have to do with Christmas, but this one ran almost the entire route. The cart was a fan favorite - as were so many. Great job TGO, for showing up with great designs.

TGO Christmas Golf C t P ade

Lorraine Murphy (top above) was the Grand Marshal and was driven by Megan Wright in the Golf Carts Unlimited Cart.

Kids and Clowns - What parades are all about!

A big Thank You to Golf Carts Unlimited, TGO Realty and the Activities Committee for sponsoring the parade. All participants enjoyed pizza and soft drinks at the awards presentation that followed afterwards.

TGO Christmas Golf C t P ade

More clowns, elves and lawn mowers. The parade participants definitely had as much (if not more) fun than the folks watching.

Chrissy’s Catering Corner:

Did you know? We’re still not tired of cranberries! We love them and they are good for you! Now that we know they can assist with UTI’s and reduce viruses, are mostly water and low in calories - they go with Vodka, Bourbon and ohhh…yes, Tequila! Primary facts about Tequila: In order to be called tequila, it must be made within one of five regions in Mexico and must be made from the blue agave plant - it usually consists of 51% agave and the rest is a neutral spirit. During the 1918 Spanish flu epidemic, patients were instructed to drink tequila with lime and salt to ease their symptoms. Today, tequila isn’t considered a cure, but might still help sooth sore throats, ease congestion and aid with sleep.

TODAY’S RECIPE: Cranberry Margaritas

1/2 cup fresh squeezed lime juice

1/2 cup tequila

1/4 cup triple sec

1 cup cranberry juice, store bought or homemade

Ice for serving

Fresh cranberries and lime wedges for garnish

Directions: Add lime juice, tequila, triple sec and cranberry juice to a large measuring cup or shaker. Stir to combine. Fill each glass with ice and divide the margarita mixture between the two glasses. Garnish with fresh cranberries and lime slices if desired

Funny Thing Is… Medicine Makes Me Sick

Medicines make me sick. What? Aren’t they supposed to cure you? Um, yeah and they do but they don’t. So let me explain my Jekyll and Hyde analogy. You go into a clinic or your doctor with what seems to be a mild but irritating cold. After they confirm your self-diagnosis they give you a prescription medication to make you all better. Oh yeah, this medicine will stop the sneezing but, wait a minute, what’s all that little tiny writing on the little tiny paper jammed into the bottom of the box? It’s called the “side effects” part of the prescription. So it says this medicine will stop your sneezing, BUT, it may cause sleeplessness, irritability, dry mouth, sore throat, coughing, gagging, choking, or blindness if taken while staring at the sun.

REALLY? So if I take this and the sneezing stops I may have a few other conditions develop? Well, if it causes sleeplessness, fear not because we have a pill for that, too. These two pills should stop my sneezing and give me a good nights rest, but wait... there’s that little “side effects” section on the sleeping medicine which says something like “don’t operate heavy machinery.” Are you kidding me? Who’s gonna take a sleeping pill then go fire up his backhoe? Oh, just read on. It also may cause diarrhea. Now call me a skeptic and forgive me if you’re eating while reading this, but if you fall asleep and then get a case of diarrhea, wouldn’t that be a little messy if you don’t WAKE UP to go? Oh, we got another pill that can take care of that (sigh). My favorite is the “stop taking immediately” warning that is followed by “may cause rapid heart rate, stroke, or death.” DEATH? So, if it kills you, stop taking it immediately???

I guess that little cold you first walked in with wasn’t so bad and maybe a little shot of tequila, Jack Daniels or a couple glasses of your favorite wine was just the medicine you needed.

Want to Learn How to Play Tennis?

The TGO Tennis Club is enjoying a fresh new season on beautifully resurfaced courts, now featuring a crisp blue playing surface that members are raving about for its clean look and improved visibility. Match play for club members is held every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8:00am to noon, offering plenty of competitive fun. All tennis players- regardless of skill level - are welcome to join the lively round-robin sessions on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays during the same morning hours. Open play continues daily from noon until 8:00pm, giving residents ample time to get out and enjoy the upgraded courts.

The Tennis Club is actively seeking new members and encourages anyone interested to stop by and speak with a board member on the courts or contact Belle Maropis at 770-695-8266 for more information.

Did you know that tennis is one of the healthiest sports you can play? Studies show it improves cardiovascular fitness, strengthens muscles, sharpens coordination, and boosts flexibility - all while being easy on the joints compared to many other high-impact activities. Tennis also enhances mental well-being by reducing stress, improving focus, and keeping the mind engaged through strategy and quick decision-making. Best of all, it’s a social sport, giving players a chance to build friendships, stay active, and enjoy meaningful connection on and off the court. Whether you’re a seasoned player or just picking up a racquet for the first time, tennis is a fun, lifelong activity with benefits that extend far beyond the baseline.

The freshly resurfaced courts are already serving up great reviews - so much so that even Billy Specht stopped by to take a swing on them!

AREA OUTREACH EVENT Now Through JAN. 2!

We are looking for participants for a special promotion being conducted as part of a local outreach program in your area. The purpose of this event is to introduce our newest technologies to as many patients as possible from a major U.S. supplier of hearing instruments. Participants should be over the age of 55 because they best represent the segment of the population which is most likely to experience hearing loss and tinnitus (ringing and other sounds in the ears).

In exchange for spending approximately 45 minutes of your time with us, you will receive a FREE Set of Listening Ears.*

You will also receive a FREE hearing evaluation and a FREE Video Otoscope Inspection. A Video Otoscope is a tiny camera that is placed just inside your ear canal—much like your doctor does with a hand-held Otoscope during a check-up. It’s completely painless and will allow us to see whether earwax buildup may be causing difficulties with your hearing. We will also test your hearing using an Audiometer—much like you probably experienced in grade school. Neither inspection will cost you a penny, nor are you under any obligation. In addition, a trained hearing care professional will be conducting demonstrations of incredible new digital hearing instrument technologies.

FOR A LIMITED TIME, WE ARE OFFERING A 100% FREE TRIAL**

Take our hearing aids home for FREE with no money down and no obligation. Call to schedule your FREE Hearing Evaluation.

We expect a very high demand for appointments. If you’d like to participate in this event and experience the Miracle-Ear 100% FREE TRIAL**, please call the special promotion sites listed below for an appointment today.

Job change?

Whether retiring or changing jobs, you’ll want to know your retirement account options.

There are four potential options for your 401(k) when leaving an employer:

• Leave it in your former employer’s 401(k) plan, if allowed by the plan.

• Move it to your new employer’s 401(k) plan, if you’ve changed employers and your new employer plan allows for it.

• Roll the account over to an individual retirement account (IRA).

• Cash it out, which is subject to potential tax consequences.

We can talk through your financial goals and find the option that works best for you.

Please, when you see emergency vehicles coming in with lights flashing, pull over and let them pass! It could be your loved ones they are here for.

CSA Trash Pick Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the process efficient, please follow these rules:

• Trash must be placed in plastic bags that are tied closed. Lightweight bags should be tied together. Trash that is not in plastic bags may not be picked up.

• Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag.

• Place trash within one foot of the road so it’s within easy reach.

• Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag.

• Put trash out at the curb by 10:00am - Pick-up time varies within the park.

• Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials.

• Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals.

• Also, be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch!

CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility - 321-264-5009. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc., that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station321-264-5048.

Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property

Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.

Guide to Living With Alligators in TGO

There are 32 lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby:

• It is illegal to feed, taunt or harass an alligator.

• Do not swim or wade in any of our lakes.

• Do not walk near the shorelines and do not walk your pets near the shoreline.

• Do not allow your pets to swim, exercise or drink in or near our lakes.

• While alligators can be active at any time, they are most active between dusk and dawn and move during the night to different water sources.

• Please give our alligators the respect and space they deserve.

NOTE: If you come across an aggressive alligator, please contact the CSA Office prior to SNAP and allow us to handle any situation.

AED

Basics (Automated External Defibrillator) Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED

The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks.

AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts.

The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next.

TGO Has Eight AEDs Located at CSA buildings.
