Are car headlights dangerously dazzling?
IT was good news to hear that the Government is to commission a new study looking into potential “countermeasures” for dazzling LED headlights on vehicles.
On the basis of “thank goodness it’s not just me”, motoring organisations and MPs have spoken out after accidents have been blamed on people being blinded by LED lights.
There have already been calls to ban certain types of headlights on cars because of fears that they are so bright they’re causing accidents.
AA members have told the organisation that LED lights on vehicles are among the factors causing them to be “blinded” while driving.
Worryingly, according to national collisions’ data, dazzling headlights were a contributing factor in 216 incidents in 2023.
Now, after a new question in the House of Commons on the subject, the Secretary of State for Transport accepted there was increased public concern about headlight glare. Independent research was underway and due to be delivered this Summer.
Certainly, driving along country lanes late at night to be met by the glare of bright LED lights coming in the opposite direction could create a potentially dangerous situation.
AA president Edmund King stated: “Our own research shows it is an issue for some drivers with three quarters saying they have been blinded by oncoming headlights.
“Our members tell us that they are feeling the strain of brighter headlights more than ever before, as well as brighter brake and traffic lights. Conversely, they also say brighter lights enhance road safety.
“The problem seems to be LED lights on higher vehicles such as SUVs. The Government-sponsored investigation into the use of LED lights on our roads should help clarify this issue further, as well as provide appropriate measures where needed.”
RAC senior policy officer Rod Dennis said: “Few issues we deal with have triggered quite as much of a reaction among drivers as the brightness of headlights. It’s clear that, for a proportion of the driving public, glare affects them profoundly on the roads at night.
“But while the frustration is evident, the causes of the problem and what can be done about it are much less clear. That’s why the Government-funded project is so important.”
So now all we can do is wait for the outcome of the research and hope it sheds a (muted) light on a worrying situation.
We’re not interested in your opinions – heckle off!
ANYONE who has ever been to a comedy night or major one-man show will know about the irritation of hecklers.
For some reason, they believe that the audience – and the comedian – will be highly entertained by their inane shouts when the reality is that it’s annoying at the least and rude and disrespectful at the most.
Peter Kay is the latest comedian to hit the headlines for taking direct action to deal with hecklers.
The AO Arena in Manchester was the scene with two audience members removed while Peter was performing his Better Late Than Never … Again tour.
When one unofficial “performer” started shouting out one of Kay’s well-known phrases, “garlic bread”, the other responded by chanting “We love you, Peter, we do.”
Kay’s response was “We love, you love” but then stated: “Alright, love, we heard you. Take her out while you’re up there (removing the first heckler) – drag her out.”
Then he is later heard to say: “Go on, Lisa Riley”, referring to the Emmerdale actress.
This incident actually resulted in a bit of a public row, with the heckler going on TV, stating: “I didn’t mean to cause any harm, I was just showing my love …. but he obviously didn’t like it.”
Forced to defend himself on Instagram, the comedian explained that the two hecklers were “disrupting from the very start.
“I did my best to address the situation and made light of it as any comedian would but, unfortunately, their interruptions continued.
“I then tried to ignore them, hoping they’d settle down, but when the disruption persisted into the second half of the show, I asked the audience around them if they were being bothered by the noise.
“They all shouted ‘yes’ and when I asked for a show of hands at least 40 people raised theirs. At that point I had no choice but to take action.”
Sorry but my sympathies are all with the performers on this one. For some reason, audience members sometimes believe that people have come to hear from THEM and insist on shouting out.
But they’re not funny and they’re not wanted.
I really think heckling is a self-fulfilling prophecy and if you do it, prepare for retribution – usually with a great put-down by the comedian.
Now that really IS appreciated by the audience.
HAVING a mammogram is not something you’d automatically do for fun.
Your breasts are compressed between two metal plates and x-rays taken to reveal any problem areas.
It is routinely offered to all women aged 50 to 70 in the UK every three years and more than two million women are screened each year.
It’s a brilliant tool in diagnosing early problems. It discovered my breast cancer early 20 years ago on a routine appointment. I had surgery, went on a five year drugs’ trial and I’ve been clear ever since.
Even though for me it was a personal life-saver, I do understand why many women refuse to have a mammogram. They are probably frightened about the procedure and unsure what it entails.
So it was absolutely brilliant to see 63 year-old presenter Vanessa Feltz undergoing a mammogram live on TV’s This Morning. vShe held a normal conversation throughout and explained the procedure well.
When asked how it felt, she said: “It feels slightly squashed. But it certainly isn’t hurting at all. I wouldn’t even call it discomfort. I certainly wouldn’t call it pain.”
Around 11,400 women and 85 men die from breast cancer every year - the equivalent to 32 deaths every day. So please don’t miss your mammograms.

At the southernmost tip of the Iberian Peninsula, where Africa meets Europe, lies the captivating peninsular of Gibraltar. Magnificent scenery, rich architecture and enchanting wildlife capture the essence of the Mediterranean, but at the same time retaining that warm and comforting homecoming feel. Temperatures can creep above 30 centigrade in summer and with an average of 300 days sunshine a year Gibraltar’s subtropical North African sun and fascinating history ensures that the number of visitors continues to increase each year.
the American War of Independence and it is also recorded that Admiral Nelson’s fleet was based in Gibraltar. Following the victory of Trafalgar in 1805, his body, preserved in a barrel of rum, was brought to Gibraltar. And of course it is widely known that Gibraltar played a pivotal role during the Second World War.
Today, Gibraltar offers visitors a tantalising glimpse into this intriguing history and there is the opportunity to witness the splendour of ceremonial events including the Changing of the Guard and the Ceremony of the Keys, which are still performed with precision as they were in past centuries.
Gibraltar remains a strategically important military and naval base and has been ruled by many since early Arab occupation. Spanish forces governed from the beginning of the fourteenth century until 1333 when the Moors retained control. In 1462 the peninsula was recaptured by Spain until Admiral George Rooke took control in 1704. Gibraltar has continued to play a prominent role in times of conflict. Spanish and French forces besieged the peninsular during
Keen to know more of the struggles for power, I visited the imposing Moorish Castle, admired the beautiful Spanish architecture at the Cathedral of St Mary the Crowned and wandered around the tranquil gardens surrounding the Trafalgar Cemetery. Although Gibraltar is a small peninsular there is plenty to see and do. For those of us who love to shop, Gibraltar is a VAT free zone and Main Street, which runs the length of the town centre, is crammed with shops enticing the most reluctant! Many of the quaint little shops located in the lanes and narrow alleys are simply charming and display vast selections of jewellery with both precious and semi-precious stones, pieces of exquisite porcelain and fine glassware, leather goods, perfumes, silks and cashmere.
The crystal factory is well worth a visit and I was mesmerised by the master glass blowers crafting molten glass into beautiful products, which make unique gifts. For those seeking a special dining experience, Gibraltar’s inhabitants and visitors can be seen dining Mediterranean style. Al fresco restaurants include French, Indian, Italian, English, Moroccan, Spanish, Peking and Szechwan. There are also some lively pubs offering excellent menus and great entertainment. A quick-paced walk around Casemates Square
(once the location for public executions) will work off those calories! These days the square is also crammed with al fresco bars and cafes providing the perfect spot to watch the locals and visitors strolling sedately by. And for those who also love a long leisurely afternoon stroll after a generous lunch, discover the wealth of plant life exhibited in the Botanical Gardens. I was entranced by the palms and jacaranda, clematis, bougainvillaea, honeysuckle and geraniums and I couldn’t fail to notice the scent of lavender and jasmine hanging on the breeze.
For those drawn to something more strenuous, local activities include sailing, diving and fishing. Bird watching is another popular pastime and of course a trip to visit the Barbary Apes, at the top of ‘the rock’ cannot be missed. The Barbary Apes are the only wild primates in Europe and legend has it that if the apes leave then Gibraltar will cease to be British. This does not cause concern, as it is quite clear that they are very well looked after!
Gibraltar holds many surprises for visitors; there are four spacious sandy beaches to choose from. Eastern Beach, Sandy Beach, Western Beach and the charming picturesque and sedate Catalan Bay (which was settled by Genoese fishermen in the 18th century) are highly recommended. For those of us who love to sail, Gibraltar’s marine life is very impressive. You may well encounter turtles, dolphins and even the Blue Whale, which is known to migrate to the area. For bird watchers, a visit to the Upper Rock Nature Reserve is a real treat. The Rock is a staging post for an extensive array of species including eagles, vultures and buzzards and residents include the Blue Rock Thrush, Peregrine Falcon and the Barbary Partridge.
Choosing a place to stay is always a dilemma but I was most fortunate to secure a gorgeous suite at the Rock Hotel. The hotel, (recipient of four of the highly regarded AA stars), was built by the Marquis of Bute in 1932 and well-known guests include Winston Churchill. The hotel presents a rich colonial style décor and provides an excellent level of comfort and service, which makes for a perfect retreat. The views across the Bay of Gibraltar, the Spanish mainland and the Rif Mountains of Morocco are quite simply breathtaking. The hotel also holds two RAC dining awards as well as the RAC White Ribbon. The restaurant is of course very popular with locals and visitors alike and offers an extensive menu with British, Iberian and Moorish dishes served in relaxed surroundings. After indulging in one too many courses, I took a dip in the open-air seawater pool, which is in a secluded spot within a lush tranquil garden. This activity was followed by a few cocktails and then a long leisurely snooze! Visit Gibraltar, and experience a little piece of England on the Mediterranean.

IT’S very unlikely that British actress Emma Thompson could ever be typecast.
She can put in a sensitive performance as the scorned wife, have audiences crying over her deep emotions as a mother or, equally, laughing out loud at her comedy performances.
On the big screen she’s been prim and proper, completely wanton and very brave. And it’s all down to hugely skilled acting talents and a lack of fear of challenging new roles.
This is not surprising when you realise that her professional actress gene was honed early, at home in London and in a family of actors.
Her father Eric Thompson - a scriptwriter and stage director as well as an actor - was perhaps best remembered as the creator and narrator of children’s TV classic The Magic Roundabout.
Her mother Phyllida Law worked extensively in TV series like Dixon of Dock Green and Rumpole of the Bailey and also appeared in films.
Emma’s sister Sophie is also an actress and has appeared in TV programmes from EastEnders to Coronation Street as well as in films like Four Weddings and a Funeral.
Emma’s wit was cultivated at home in this cheerful and creative family atmosphere. She attended Cambridge University, studying English Literature, and was part of the university’s famous Footlights Club where Monty Python members first met.
She graduated in 1980 and started her entertainment career on BBC radio and touring with comedy shows. Her first big TV break came on the comedy sketch programme Alfresco in 1983, writing and performing alongside Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie.
She worked later on other comedy shows, including with actor Robbie Coltrane.
In 1985, she collaborated with Stephen Fry on his stage adaptation of the play Me and My Girl in London’s West End, in which she had a leading role.
This proved successful with Emma getting good reviews. On the strength of this, she was cast as the lead in BBC TV miniseries
Fortunes of War co-starring actor and director Kenneth Branagh, who became her first husband.
In the late 1980s and ‘90s, she was in a variety of well-received TV and film productions. Her first film role was in the 1989 romantic comedy The Tall Guy and then she and Branagh co-starred in several films including Dead Again in 1991 and Much Ado About Nothing in 1993.
In 1992, she showcased her considerable acting talents on both sides of the Atlantic in the wonderful Merchant-Ivory film Howards End. She won both an Oscar and a BAFTA, heralding her move between art films and the best of Hollywood.
In 1993, she received two Academy Award nominations – for her role as the housekeeper in a grand house in the wonderfully atmospheric The Remains of the Day and as a lawyer in In The Name of the Father.
In 1994, she demonstrated her light touch with comedy in the Arnold Schwarzenegger film Junior.
The next year, Emma - also a very talented screenwriter - wrote the screenplay for Ang Lee’s much-acclaimed version of Sense and Sensibility. In fact, she is the only person to have won Academy Awards for both acting and writing.
In 1998, she put in a much-praised performance as the wife of presidential candidate John Travolta in Primary Colours.
Then, in a real change of character, she starred in the Harry Potter film series as whacky Divination teacher Sybill Trelawney.
“I have a nervous breakdown in the film,” she recalled, “and in one scene I get to stand at the top of the stairs waving an empty sherry bottle which is, of course a typical scene from my daily life, so isn’t much of a stretch!”
In 2003, she joined a star-studded cast for blockbuster Love Actually, with a gently affecting performance as the wronged wife.
Her usually attractive appearance was deliberately marred in 2005 as the scary Nanny McPhee in the film of the same name. In 2012 she was in Men In Black 3.
Emma was cast in Bridget Jones’s Baby in 2016 and starred in Beauty and the Beast the following year. She was promoted to Prime Minister in 2018 for Johnny English Strikes back and was Baroness von Hellman in another very popular film Cruella in 2021.
She is in the latest Bridget Jones blockbuster Mad About the Boy and is in the middle filming Three Bags Full: A Sheep Detective Movie with The Fisherwoman also currently in post-production.
She married British actor Greg Wise in 2003 and the couple have one daughter Gaia and also an adopted son Tindyebwa Agaba.
Emma plainly doesn’t take herself too seriously. She once said: “I am who I am and there is nothing I can do about that.”
As to her work ethic, she stated: “I have periods of intense activity, then stop.
“My ideal is to work hard in the morning until I pick Gaia up from school. Just putting an empty square in my diary seems to make a space in my head, too. You have to be very good at saying no.”
Emma is honest about her acting skills. “Acting simply cannot be about how you look. It would be very difficult to make a film where you have to be beautiful in every shot.
“You have to put so much effort into it; you have to hold your head at particular angles, put the light in a certain way and I don’t like acting like that. I like to act unconscious of how I look.”
She is also very practical. “I’m very lucky I write as well,” she stated. “I don’t see how I could be as effective a mother as I’d like to be if I had to go away and act all the time.
“So I’ve sort of pulled back from acting, which is fine, because I’ve found over the years – and this was a surprise to me – that I can get the same kind of creative satisfaction from writing as I have heretofore gotten out of acting. It’s very encouraging, really.”
As we grow older, embracing technology can sometimes feel like a daunting task. But the benefits of becoming digitally savvy can outweigh the initial learning curve.
From connecting with loved ones to stay in touch, being entertained, and staying safe, technology has become an essential tool.
The best way to get comfortable with technology is to start small. Whether it’s learning how to send a message, stream your favourite TV series, or set reminders, each skill builds confidence for the next.
In many of our retirement communities, help is readily available to ease this journey into the digital world. At The Spindles in Menston, one of our duty managers runs a fortnightly tech group to offer guidance. This could involve anything from showing someone how to take a picture on their phone to explaining how to navigate a specific app.
At The Sidings in Lytham, homeowner, Dr Trevor has made the most of technology to enable him to enjoy his lifelong love of opera. Having always been a fan of the arts, homeowner Dr Trevor discovered that YouTube offers a treasure trove of performances.
For homeowner, David, knowing he could pop downstairs and speak to the management team for support was crucial when he received a suspicious message claiming to be from Royal Mail. Unsure if it was a scam, he was able to seek advice immediately, putting his mind at ease.
While technology opens a world of possibilities, it’s important to stay vigilant against online scams:
• Be cautious of messages or emails from unknown sources pretending to be a company or friend. Always verify their identity through trusted means.
• Scammers often create urgency. Take your time to confirm the legitimacy of a request.
• Be wary of unexpected claims about account issues or emergencies. Double-check through a reliable contact.
• Never make payments or share personal details unless you’re certain it’s legitimate.
• If in doubt, ask a trusted friend or family member for advice.
Technology can enhance your life in countless ways. Video communication tools like Zoom and WhatsApp and social media platforms like Facebook allow you to stay connected with loved ones, no matter where they are. Streaming services such as Netflix provide endless entertainment options, while platforms like YouTube can introduce you to new hobbies and interests.
Healthcare apps help you stay on top of your medication and appointments, and news and shopping apps bring convenience to your fingertips.

intervention with dental implant placements was crucial in this case.”
Cathy adds: “My general dentist told me I needed to go and see Dr Usman and his team at Renovo for long-term permanent treatment. I plucked up the courage and went.”
Following an X-ray and jaw scans, the news was not good for Cathy: “I have always looked after myself and losing my teeth was my idea of hell. It was a terrible shock. Usman said I wouldn’t like dentures but left the decision totally to me. He explained the procedure and reassured me it would be pain free, so I eventually made the decision and agreed to implants.”
Dr Riaz and the award-winning Renovo team set to work, beginning a detailed assessment of what could be done. In the lead up to the same-day, full upper and lower arch implants, Dr Riaz explained the
A busy care worker has had her life transformed following pioneering same-day dental implant treatment carried out here in the Ribble Valley
Leading the way in UK implant technology is Lancashire-based Renovo Dental, which was one of the first implant centres in the country to adopt the highly successful, ground-breaking ‘Fully Guided Implant Surgery’ technique.
Highly experienced in this same-day procedure, implant surgeon Dr Usman Riaz and a specialist team, including in-house dental technicians, worked together using the latest digital technology to replace both upper and lower teeth permanently in just over three hours – omitting the need for dentures.
Despite following strict hygiene protocols and advice by her own dentist, Catherine’s gums and bone levels had deteriorated further, causing unsightly gaps in her teeth and several teeth became mobile.
“This is what end-stage gum disease looks like,” Dr Riaz explains. “Unfortunately, genetics were not in the patient’s favour. Typically, this sort of problem develops later in life, but Cathy is relatively young and her teeth were beyond saving.
“At this point, it is less about preserving teeth and all about using the remaining bone and soft tissue to help restore full function, aesthetics and confidence. Timing of the

NOTHING cheers us up when the weather is gloomy and rainy than planning for sunshine days, at home or abroad.
While booking holidays may not be for everyone this year – or within their pocket – looking at practical ways to make your home Summer-ready will definitely give you a boost.
Nor do you have to budget to spend huge amounts for the sunnier seasons ahead. Often, it’s just a matter of improving what you have and taking advantage of your current décor and furnishings.
On a practical basis, check for cracks and leaks around your home that the colder months may have inflicted. Ensure your GUTTERS are not broken or clogged up with leaves and check your pipes for Winter damage.
Don’t forget to check out basements or attics, too. If you need repairs there, get them sorted to have your home in tip-top shape.
HANDY TIP: Summer is definitely the best time for work on your BOILER so if it wants servicing, look around for good deals. Going into warmer days means less demand on boiler engineers’ time, too, so you can pick your times better.
Seeing the EXTERIOR of your home looking bright and cheerful helps our mood and Spring is also an ideal time to get this done. Colour improves kerb appeal.
Your front-door is the focal point of your home’s front exterior so make sure it’s looking good – clean, bright and welcoming.
Take a proper look at your GARDEN and make decisions on how it could look for the rest of the year. Spring is the time to spruce it up and plan it properly.
Sweep up any dead leaves, remove weeds and prune bushes and plants. Pre-Summer work goes a long way in helping your garden blossom later.
If you’ve got a bird bath or similar, give it a good clean – the birds will appreciate it as well. Mow the lawn and make sure it’s in good condition. As well as giving it the best possible growing start, it cheers you up as it’s nice to look at!
If you’ve got a BARBECUE in the garden, give it a deep clean before you really need it for warmer days. Remove that grease and grime embedded there to leave it sparkling!
Garden fences and walls could have suffered from Winter weather so examine these external areas. With fences, tackle the most affected areas with sandpaper or a brush and then add a layer of good-quality outdoor paint to return that uniform colour.
Check out your GARDEN FURNITURE to see if it’s damaged in any way or even just looking a bit sad. Remove dirt, cobwebs and leaves by washing with warm, soapy water. If you’ve got wooden furniture, use a pressure washer to get rid of grime that’s built up.
Do you want to invest in some new garden items and furniture? Fire pits, for example, with comfortable seating around are an excellent idea for family gettogethers and to enjoy every hour of fine weather right into the evening.
Tidy up your shed or garage on the next decent day. You’ll find garden tools and all you need for the Summer far more easily and create extra storage for your home.
Sort out your washing line. Drying clothes outside is not just better for the environment, it’s better for your clothes. And pegging out is so satisfying!
HANDY TIP: Clean your windows well, inside and out. You want the best of that sunshine to pour into your home and you’ll be surprised at the difference to the light just having really clean windows makes.
When it comes to your home INTERIOR, think about how you’re going to replace all the wintry furnishings for more summery ones. This includes swapping cosy rugs, candles and heavier curtains for lighter fabric and brighter colours.
Do some or all of your rooms need PAINTING? Some may just need a touch-up but if you’re going to embrace the Summer months, having a change of décor makes your home feel like a new property.
Take a good look at colour charts and use shades that blend in with your current décor but may be one or two shades lighter. And add signature walls in brighter shades to add a focal point.

Bring GREENERY into your home – this is a great way to prepare your home for Summer and enjoying more life outdoors. Create your own clever arrangements with twigs and greenery in a pretty pot or vase and invest in attractive indoor plants that make you feel you can breathe again.
HANDY TIP: Putting a Peace Lily in a pot in various rooms in your home can help fight mould and promote freshness. They cleverly absorb excess moisture in a room and can prevent mould growth and mildew.
As Summer is a time for fresh starts, use Spring to DE-CLUTTER your home, clearing out rubbish and itemizing things you can sell or give away online or can take to your local charity shops.
Exchange heavy throws for light, airy linen, light fabrics and cheerful cushions. Take down those heavy CURTAINS and consider lighter fabrics or even voiles which give a balmy Mediterranean boost to any room.
Is this the time to install BLINDS? They are ideal for warmer months and give any room a quick “makeover”. Current styles and colours suit any room and make it come alive when the sunshine hits.
Is your LOUNGE FURNITURE too wintry and heavy? You don’t have to spend a fortune to replace it. Shop around for deals or visit any of your local charities’ furniture showrooms. The British Heart Foundation and Emmaus particularly specialize in good-value furniture at realistic prices, and you’re also supporting two excellent causes.
Bring out the lighter weight BEDDING for when temperatures are higher and look at colour co-ordinating them better in your bedroom. Could you do with a change of lighting here? Are your curtains Winter-weight when you could wake up to light streaming through to signal a really beautiful day?

I like to make this crab salad as a sharing dish or pre-starter. The crispbreads are a dinner party show-off, but you could always buy in some nice quality ones.
Method
Mix the white crab meat with the olive oil in a large bowl and season with salt and pepper. Stir in the lime, grapefruit and apple. For the dressing, place all of the ingredients in a food processor and blitz to a smooth paste. Transfer to a small bowl.
For the crispbreads, put the flour, yeast, salt and oil in a food processor with a dough hook attachment. Gradually add 100–150ml water until a dough is formed. Put in a bowl, cover with a tea towel and leave to prove for 1–2 hours, or until doubled in volume.
Serves: 2
Ingredients FOR THE CRAB SALAD
• 200g white crab meat
• 1 tbsp olive oil
• 1 lime, peeled and chopped
• 1 pink grapefruit, peeled and chopped
• 1⁄2 Braeburn apple, peeled and finely diced
• salt and pepper FOR THE DRESSING
• 2 tbsp brown crab meat
• 1 tbsp crème fraîche
• juice of 1 lime FOR THE CRISPBREADS
• 200g strong bread flour
• 7g sachet dried yeast
• 1 tsp sea salt
• 1 tbsp olive oil
• 1 tsp coriander seeds, toasted and crushed TO SERVE
• 1 tbsp chopped fresh dill
• 1 tbsp chopped fresh tarragon
Preheat the oven to 220°C/425°F/Gas 7. Divide the dough into four and roll out each piece through a pasta machine on its thinnest setting, or roll by hand as thin as you dare. Lay on a baking tray, sprinkle over the crushed coriander seeds and some salt and brush over some oil. Cook for 8–10 minutes.
To serve, put the crispbreads on a serving plate. Spoon the dressing over the crispbreads, add the crab salad and garnish with the herbs.
I find that by Boxing Day I am really looking for something a bit spicy, ideally with lots of chilli. This fits the bill and also fills you up nicely.
Method
Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/Gas 4.
In a casserole dish, sweat the onion, garlic, leek and celery in some olive oil for 10 minutes until soft. Add the tarragon sprigs, chopped thyme and ’nduja paste, if using. Pour in the wine and boil off the alcohol for a few minutes before adding the stock. Simmer gently for another 10 minutes.
Meanwhile make the dumplings as per the recipe on page 139, adding the extra ingredients with the breadcrumbs. Don’t roll them too tightly to keep them light. Drop the dumplings into the hot stock, add the torn cavolo nero and put the casserole dish (no lid) in the oven for around 25 minutes. Serve immediately.
Serves: 4 FOR THE BROTH
• 1 onion, peeled and sliced
• 3 garlic cloves, peeled and minced
• 1 leek, sliced
• 3 celery sticks, sliced
• olive oil
• a few fresh tarragon sprigs
• 1 tbsp chopped fresh thyme
• 1 tbsp ’nduja paste (optional)
• 125ml white wine
• 500ml turkey or chicken stock
• 1 head of cavolo nero, leaves stripped from the stems
DUMPLING RECIPE (PAGE 139) WITH THE FOLLOWING ADDED TO THE MIX
• zest of 1 unwaxed lemon
• a handful of chopped basil leaves
• a pinch of chilli flakes

I adapted this from Elizabeth David’s classic cookbook An Omelette and a Glass of Wine. It is one of the easiest and tastiest recipes I know.
Serves: 4-6
Ingredients
• 300g unsalted butter, plus a little extra
• 6 white onions, peeled and cut thickly into half-moons
• 1–2kg beef topside, cut into portion-sized steaks
• salt and pepper 2–3 bay leaves
FLAVOURINGS
• 2–3 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed
• 1–2 tbsp red wine vinegar
• 6 tbsp olive oil
• 5–6 anchovy fillets, chopped up
• 2 dried red chillies (bird’s eye)
• 1 very large handful fresh
• flat-leaf parsley
Method
Preheat the oven to 140°C/275°F/Gas1. Take a solid casserole with a lid, and rub all over the inside with the butter. Then scatter in some of the onions. Season the beef and add a layer over the onions. Continue to layer beef, onion and seasoning. Throw in the bay leaves. Smear a sheet of greaseproof paper with more butter, and place, butter-side down, on top of the meat and onions. Place the lid on the pot and heat over a medium heat until it starts to sizzle. Put into the preheated oven and leave for 2 hours, until the meat is very tender.Place the rest of the ingredients – the flavourings – into a food processor, and blitz to make a paste. Stir the paste into the meat and juices. Replace the lid and leave to infuse for 30 minutes. Gently reheat on the hob, and serve with mash and something green.
This is my daughter’s favourite pudding, a spiced-up version of the classic French dessert, and one of the first things I learned to cook.It takes a while to master and requires investment in a really good pan, but it’s well worth the effort. You’ll never have any leftovers serving this dish!
Method
Peel and core the apples, then cut in half from top to bottom. Set aside.
Press the butter into the base of a 20cm-diameter ovenproof copper or heavy-based pan with the back of a wooden spoon until it melts to completely cover the base.
Sprinkle over the caster sugar in an even layer. Place the cinnamon stick, star anise, vanilla pod, black pepper and nutmeg in the pan, then lay the halved apples on top, cut sides facing up.
On a floured surface, roll out the puff pastry to 3mm thick, then cut around a plate about 3cm larger than the cooking pan.
Place the pastry in the pan, pushing it down between the side of the pan and the apples to create the sides of the tart. Make sure the whole pan is tightly packed.
Serves: 2-4
• 3 Cox’s apples, peeled and halved
• 100g unsalted butter, softened
• 100g caster sugar
• 1 cinnamon stick
• 1 star anise
• 1 vanilla pod, split lengthways
• a twist of black pepper
• a pinch of freshly grated nutmeg
• flour, for dusting
• 200g puff pastry
• clotted cream, to serve
Prick the top all over to allow the steam to escape when cooking, then chill for 30 minutes or so. Preheat the oven to 220°C/425°F/Gas 7.
To cook, put the pan over a moderate heat and every few minutes shake the pan to prevent the apples from burning. Look for a golden caramel colour to appear around the side of the pan, after about 6–8 minutes. (At this point, if the pastry starts to melt, you’ve rolled it too thin. Remove, cool and start again.) Bake in the oven for 20–25 minutes, until the pastry is firm and golden.
If you are not serving the tart immediately, you can leave it in the pan and reheat it later, or turn it out warm and serve with clotted cream.

The National Breast Screening Programme invites all women aged between 50 – 70 every 3 years for a mammogram Each GP Practice is screened in turn and all women registered with a GP will receive an invitation
What happens when I reach 71?
Women over the age of 71 will not be sent an appointment automatically but they can self-refer for a mammogram every 3 years by contacting us.
What is breast screening?
Breast screening (or mammography) is an x-ray of the breast that is used to find any changes in the breast tissue that could be cancer, so they can be investigated early

Why do I need to be screened?
1 in 7 women in the UK will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point during their lives. Breast cancer is now the most common cause of cancer in women in this country
Early detection saves lives
Most breast changes will not be cancer, but if cancer is found, the treatment needed will often be less intense and the chance of making a full recovery is much higher
The earlier breast cancer is found, the better the chances of survival
This year we celebrate 20 years of being in business and what a 20 years they have been! So we thought we would give you a brief history.
In 1996 Jonathan started working at his fathers (Colin) dental laboratory in Churchgate. This laboratory was later sold in 2002 and after meeting contractual obligation Colin and Jonathan decided to go it alone and open C&J Dental Technologist in 2005 on Higher Bridge Street in Bolton. Denise (Jonathan’s mother and Colin’s wife) helped out and became the delivery driver. In 2007 they took on their first full time member of staff Gemma.
At this time Gemma was an apprentice technician studying part time at Manchester University. She went on to qualify as a dental technician and now plays an essential role in the running and management of the business, not to mention her excellent technical ability to produce great dental prosthetics.
With a lot of hard work the business went from strength to strength and both Jonathan and Colin decided to train to qualify as Clinical Dental Technicians. This extra qualification meant they would be able to treat member of the general public for DENTURES only. They both became qualified and registered Clinical Dental Technicians in 2008 and were among the first to achieve this accolade in the UK. This resulted in the creation of Bolton Denture Centre.
This added an extra arm to the business as not only were they doing work for dentists they could treat the public for dentures themselves, this meant they were able to focus on creating bespoke, high quality dentures directly to the patient. Enabling them to offer the time and personal service it takes to craft a individualised smile.
Denise retired in 2013 and decided to spend time with her grandchildren and for those of you who knew Colin he was very much a character and dentistry was his life. In 2014 due to ill health he finally hung up his wax knife and Jonathan bought the business and with the help of Gemma have continued to grow it over the past 10 years. In 2014 Jonathan and Gemma got married and in 2015 had there first child Elijah (who has featured in our advertising).
Unfortunately in February 2017 Denise died suddenly, sadly never getting to meet the granddaughter she always wanted, Frankie Dean born in February 2018. Colin continued to pop in and out of the lab just to keep his hand in especially after losing Denise. In October 2018 he was reunited with her as he sadly passed away after a very long illness.
Jonathan has grown the ‘all-on four’ and ‘implant’ sides of the business and continued to run a successful denture clinic, for which he is extremely passionate about.
After moving house to Egerton in 2020 Jonathan and Gemma kept their eyes open for a new premise as sadly Bolton town centre isn’t what it used to be. They made the decision to move to their new premises, 452 Darwen Road in Bromley Cross they opened the doors on 31st May 2023 and have never looked back. They designed the laboratory and clinic exactly how they wanted and although smaller it is a modern laboratory and clinic and has better parking facilities for patients. (And they do say good things come in small packages).
To celebrate being open 20 years we are offering two free open clinics running from the 19th-20th May. Meaning people can come in with no appointment to discuss any DENTURE related issues be thatnew dentures, repairs, relines, general denture advise or implant denture advise. We really hope people will make the most of this service!!
We would like to thank all our Bolton Denture Centre patients past, present and future for their support and all our dentists who use C& J Dental laboratory for their patient’s work within their surgeries around the UK.
And finally, we hope Colin and Denise would be proud of how we have continued their legacy. Here’s to the next 20 years.
Based in Bromley Cross our premises offer a more modern environment both from our clinical and technical needs.
Many denture wearers suffer with poor fitting, worn out or artificial looking dentures that cause the wearer to feel a lack of confidence in their dentures. This can present itself when chewing or even by just worrying about the denture dropping during a conversation. All these are issues that Bolton Denture Centre specialise in correcting.
A Clinical Dental Technician (CDT) is a qualified dental technician that has under gone further Education and Training to gain a Diploma in Clinical Dental Technology as Awarded by the Royal Collage of Surgeons (RCS).
At Bolton Denture Centre our clinician is one of the first registered Clinical Dental Technicians in the country, and able to offer a bespoke service of treating the patient AND making the denture in the laboratory.
Over recent years there have been many improvements in both the way we construct dentures and in the materials and denture teeth that we use. One such innovation currently on the dental market is DIGITAL DENTURES.
However as with any new technology it usually gets rushed to market before it is fully developed. We have seen an upturn in enquiries for this technology, but after many meetings with sales reps and looking into the technology behind it we feel the quality and aesthetics are extremally substandard in comparison to a bespoke handmade tradtional denture.
Smiling has a host Mood BoostingBoost your immunity stronger immunity.

What if you don’t Here at The Bolton over 15 years. A smile is one humans. Smiling aw frequent less than 14%
We also feel the fit of digital dentures are not going to be as good as the fit of traditional dentures as the digital impression cannot replicate the compressive action of the denture, therefore leaving in general reduced suction. This is why we have chosen not to offer this service as of yet here at Bolton Denture Centre. You still have to be a clinical dental technician to provide digital dentures.
Your Dentures need Attention
1. When they become loose.
2. When teeth or denture base discolours.
3. When tooth surfaces become flat.
4. When denture base does not fit around natural teeth (in partial dentures).
5. When you develop deep lines around your mouth.
6. When your chin sticks out, and the corners of your lips are constantly wet, developing sores.
7. When you stop smiling and feel embarrassed.

Constructing a functional and aesthetically pleasing set of dentures is the most difficult task in dentistry. We are not only replacing lost teeth, but also lost tissue matter and bone. In other words, we have to re-create your facial features as they were before the loss of your natural teeth.
Took my 96 year old dad to see Johnathan to sort out his dentures. Johnathan was courteous, helpful and very professional. I would highly recommend his services.

In most cases we do not know what your teeth looked like, what size they were or what position they were in originally. We have a few indications but mostly we have to rely on our visual and artistic judgement.
Cannot praise Jonathan enough absolutely first class. Came in specially Christmas eve to help me out and saved my Christmas from being ruined (meals out etc) used again yesterday and the same great service would highly recommend to anyone.

Dentures are in constant use almost 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. They are also in a pretty hostile environment in the mouth, being attacked by strong acid, bacteria, hot, cold and spicy food. Denture material absorbs liquids and food odour.

Be Positive, Practical and Productive in 2025 by taking care of your financial end of life planning and more importantly giving peace of mind to your loved ones
This article was written by Haven Personal Funeral Plans Ltd.
What is a funeral plan?
A funeral plan allows you to pay for your funeral upfront saving your loved ones from the financial burden of covering the cost themselves. Funeral plans can only be sold by firms authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) or their Appointed Representatives.
You will pay for the funeral at today’s prices, potentially saving the cost of inflation from between when you take the funeral plan out and time of need.
Planning your own funeral can be a difficult and emotional thing to do for most people, nobody wants to think about, let alone have a conversation about the day when they are not here. However it can provide loved ones with all the help and support they will need at a difficult time.
If you have ever had to plan a loved one’s funeral, you will know first hand how distressing and difficult this can be. In order for the funeral director to arrange the funeral they have to ask you a series of questions. You need to make certain decisions which when you are grieving and upset can be an incredibly difficult thing to do, especially if you didn’t know your loved one’s personal preferences. This can make you question if you made the right choice and then there is the financial burden of also having to cover the cost of the funeral.
A funeral plan can be a positive, practical and productive thing to do not only for yourself but very importantly for your loved ones.
What are the benefits and risks of having a funeral plan?
If you are thinking about a funeral plan, it is important that you have all of the information in order for you to decide if a funeral
plan is right for you, it is important to weigh up the benefits and the risks.
Benefits of having a funeral plan:
• They potentially protect you from inflation. You pay for the funeral at today’s price avoiding any future inflation. If funeral costs continue to rise in the future as they have done consistently in previous years, you will not need to pay anymore. Currently in the UK, the cost of a basic funeral is now £4,141.00 which has increased by 4.7% compared to last years price (according to the Sunlife Cost of Dying Report 2024).
• The financial burden is taken away from your loved ones at time of need.
• Your funeral arrangements and personal wishes are taken care of.
• Funeral plans are exempt from Inheritance Tax.
Risks of having a funeral plan:
• A funeral plan only covers items/ services included in the plan, these vary depending on the plan so it is important to check you have included everything. If at point of need items / services need to be added, for example an additional car for relatives, your relative will have to pay for this.
• The funeral plan provider could fail, if this was the case your plan could be refunded in full or be transferred to another provider.
• The Trust in which your money is invested may fail, if this was the case and a return of your monies is not possible you may be entitled to compensation under the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS).
• In the unlikely event that funeral costs fall in the future, the price paid for your funeral plan would remain the same.
What’s included in a funeral plan?
This can vary depending on the plan provider and the type of funeral plan however most funeral plans include funeral directors’ costs, a coffin, a hearse, a minister, cremation fees, burial fees up to the cost of cremation. It is important when buying a funeral plan that you read and understand exactly what is and is not included in the funeral plan. Funeral plans can be tailored and personalised to suit your individual needs and wishes.
How does a funeral plan with Haven work?
Haven sells funeral plans through a network of family-owned funeral directors who are Appointed Representatives of Haven Personal Funeral Plans. The funeral homes cover East Lancashire,
West Yorkshire and Greater Manchester. Funeral plans are sold face to face by funeral directors who have been specifically trained in funeral plans.
When you take out a Haven Personal Funeral plan, the price you pay includes an administration fee that is kept by the company to cover the day to day running costs. The balance is then transferred into The Haven Funeral Trust where it is invested by an FCA regulated investment manager. The money is held there until needed.
During the lifetime of the funeral plan, you will be contacted every 18 months with a summary of your funeral plan and given the opportunity to change any details of the funeral plan to suit your current needs and wishes. Changes to your funeral plan can be made at any time, you do not need to wait for the 18 month summary. Haven do not charge an admin fee for changes being made to your funeral plan.
When you take the funeral plan out, you will be given the opportunity to appoint a Nominated Representative. A Nominated Representative is someone who will know about your funeral plan so that at time of need, the funeral plan does not go unclaimed. A nominated representative can’t make any changes or cancel your funeral plan.
At time of need, whoever is arranging your funeral simply needs to get in touch either with Haven directly or your nominated funeral director where they will be informed of what happens next. They will then be supported throughout the entire process leading up to during and after the funeral by our team of dedicated caring and professional staff.
Once the funeral has taken place, Haven will pay your nominated funeral director for carrying out your funeral in accordance with your planned wishes. Your loved ones will not be charged any extra for this, these costs will be covered by your funeral plan. If any extras are required at time of need that are not covered by the funeral plan, these will be payable to the funeral director by your loved ones.
