As Kansas City Public School faces a shrinking student body and a school system made up of older building, the district has made the drastic decision of proposing closure of 10 schools, some of which may be closed within this calendar year.

The school has worked with a national consultant to draft a multi-year strategic plan called Blueprint 2030, which seeks to enhance the district’s educational ability.

The plan calls for closure of two high schools and eight elementary schools.

In the fall of 2023, Central High School, Longfellow Elementary School and Troost Elementary would close. These students would be transferred elsewhere, and Central would be used as a professional learning building or a temporary site to house students during renovations or construction elsewhere.

In fall 2026, Northeast High School, Melcher Elementary and Faxon Elementary School would close. Similar to Central High School, Northeast High School could serve as a professional development or “swing” site. Melcher Elementary would merge with new construction of a rebuilt King Elementary and Northeast High School. Faxon Elementary might have a future as a site of a future district project.

In fall 2024, Wheatley Elementary, Whittier Elementary and King Elementary would close. The last is being recommended as the site of a future elementary school, but the others would be taken out of operation.

The consultants also recommended the creation of three additional schools: South Middle School, which would open fall 2024; a new King Elementary in fall 2026 and an unnamed elementary school that would go up in the historic Northeast neighborhood. How is the public reacting to the closures?

“This is the school to keep,” read a headline from KCUR covering the meetings, which it’s described as contentious. Citizens have been vocal about protecting schools they have a personal connection to and schools in their neighborhoods that serve family members or once were their own institutions when they were children. Initially, the board planned to vote on the plan in December, but that final vote was pushed back to January 11.

Los consultores también recomendaron la creación de tres escuelas adicionales: la secundaria South, que abriría en el otoño de 2024; una nueva escuela primaria King en el otoño de 2026 y una escuela primaria sin nombre que se construiría en el vecindario histórico del Northeast.

¿Cómo está reaccionando el público a los cierres?

“Ésta es la escuela que hay que conservar”, decía un titular de KCUR que cubría las reuniones, que es descrita como polémica. Los ciudadanos han expresado su opinión sobre la protección de las escuelas con las que tienen una conexión personal y las escuelas en sus vecindarios que sirven a miembros de la familia o que alguna vez fueron sus propias instituciones cuando eran niños.

Inicialmente, la junta planeó votar sobre el plan en diciembre, pero esa votación final se retrasó hasta el 11 de enero.
