Seams of Life: Remembering Evelyn Martin’
Evelyn Cornwall Martin passed peacefully with family at her side on March 8, 2024, in Miramar, Florida where she found solace in the home of her son Wayne. Evelyn was born on March 27, 1921, on Union Island, an island in the Grenadines archipelago, to Nell Decoto Cornwall and George Cornwall.
Evelyn received her early education on Union Island, and later migrated to Grenada, where she continued her education focusing on becoming a seamstress, even opening a little shop where she followed her passion for sewing. Unfortunately, the shop was totally destroyed by one of the major hurricanes that devastated that island. It was here that she was introduced to the Barclays’ who welcomed her as a member of their extended family.
After losing her shop, Evelyn decided to look for work opportunities in Trinidad. Upon her arrival, she found work as a caregiver with the Ritchie family. She also continued her work as a seamstress creating beautiful clothes including wedding dresses. She sewed into her senior years and some of her handmade fashion can still be found in her closet.
It was here, in Trinidad, that she was introduced by a friend to Fitzroy Clifford Martin. Evelyn and Fitzroy were married on April 25, 1959. With this marriage, Evelyn became the mother of a blended family which included: Olive Nelcia Cornwall, Kenneth Leroy Martin, Junie Monroe, Cary Martin, Courtney Martin, Carol Ann Checkley, Kathiann Antonio, Stephen Martin, and Wayne Martin.
In 1968, Evelyn migrated to the United States of America, first living in Brooklyn, New York and then moving to Orlando Florida in 1972. Always looking for opportunities to better herself, she studied and got her GED, and trained as a Nurse’s Aide. She worked in this capacity for many years both in New York and Florida. She later worked in the food services industry until her retirement.
Evelyn has always been a very active and integral member of her church. She held many positions, such as Sabbath School Superintendent, Head Deaconess, Sabbath School Teacher, Prayer Ministries Leader, and Church Board member. She reached out to members of her community by visiting the sick, preparing meals for

those in need, and being a part of an active telephone ministry when she was no longer able to drive. She loved and enjoyed interacting with the younger members of her church family and community who became her extended children.
Evelyn’s culinary reputation for Caribbean dishes spread throughout the community and her dishes brought joy to those lucky enough to taste it. Cooking her Roti and other Caribbean creations was a labor of love and served as a source of income and fundraising.
In her retirement, she enjoyed tending to her plants, especially her roses. She was an avid reader and traveler. She took every opportunity she got to visit other countries and explore.
Evelyn peacefully passed away on March 8, 2024, at the age of 102. With grace, she closed her eyes to rest, waiting for the trumpet sound to signal the arrival of her Lord and Savior. Throughout her long and fruitful life, Evelyn touched the lives of many with her wisdom and kindness. Now, she leaves behind a treasured legacy that will forever be cherished by those who loved and knew her.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Fitzroy Clifford Martin, and daughter Olive Nelcia Cornwall Moore (Glinton – deceased). But left to cherish her memory are her children: Kenneth Leroy Martin (Venicia), Junie Monroe (Walton “Don”), Cary Martin (Mavis “Mel”), Courtney Martin (Stephanie – deceased), Carol Ann Checkley (Simone – deceased), Kathiann Antonio (Ian - deceased), Stephen Martin (Arlene), and Wayne Martin (Hortense “Genia”); Grandchildren: Wendy King (John), Ricky Cornwall, Kerri Cornwall, Tracey Monroe, Renee Monroe, Kyron Martin, Kendi Martin, Kiyah Martin, Kai Martin, Heather Jean (Kervin), Anthony Martin (Ronique), Meridith Bello (Juan), Brent Checkley, Duriel Antonio (Tomonique), Brent Antonio (Karen), Beverley Laramore, Rudiann Laramore, Stephen Martin Jr. (Kristin), Tiffany Petteway (Dewaun), Justin Martin (Brandi), and Hilary Martin along with a host of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren as well as extended family and devoted friends.
Face to Face
(With Christ My Savior)
Verse 1
Face to face with Christ my Savior, Face to face--what will it be When with rapture I behold Him, Jesus Christ who died for me?
Chorus:
Face to face I shall behold Him, Far beyond the starry sky; Face to face in all His glory, I shall see Him by and by!
Verse 2
Only faintly now I see Him
With the darkened veil between, But a blessed day is coming When His glory shall be seen.
[Chorus]
Verse 3
What rejoicing in His presence, When are banished grief and pain;
When the crooked ways are straightened
And the dark things shall be plain.
[Chorus]
Verse 4
Face to face--oh, blissful moment!
Face to face--to see and know;
Face to face with my Redeemer, Jesus Christ who loves me so.
[Chorus]
When the Roll Is Called Up Yonder
Verse 1
When the trumpet of the Lord shall sound, and time shall be no more, and the morning breaks, eternal, bright and fair; when the saved of earth shall gather over on the other shore, and the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there.
Chorus:
When the roll is called up yonder, when the roll is called up yonder, when the roll is called up yonder, when the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there.
Verse 2
On that bright and cloudless morning when the dead in Christ shall rise, and the glory of His resurrection share; when His chosen ones shall gather to their home beyond the skies, and the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there.
[Chorus]
Verse 3
Let us labor for the Master from the dawn till setting sun, let us talk of all His wondrous love and care; then when all of life is over, and our work on earth is done, and the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there.
[Chorus]

FAMILY ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
We, the family of Evelyn Martin, are eternally grateful for the overwhelming love and support of family and friends during this difficult time.
Perhaps you visited her, prayed for her or came and just sat quietly nearby. Perhaps you sent flowers or rendered a service unseen from near or far. Perhaps you called, sent a text, email or other gifts. Perhaps you have simply lifted our family in prayer over the past few weeks. Whatever you may have done to console our hearts we thank you so very much.
We also send our thanks and appreciation to the Florida Living SDA Church that she called home for so many years; Patrice Williams (aka the food police) who was a special friend and companion for the past several years; and Doreen Grabova (aka the water police) who was a divine appointment just in Mom’s time of greatest need.
We weep, but not at those who have no hope, for our hope comes from the faith that we have in God to strengthen us during this most difficult time. We especially thank you for your continued sincere prayers during the coming days and weeks. The Family of Evelyn Cornwall Martin
