Lord, make our church a Sanctuary, A place of safety and rest. A place where love abound, Where we warmly welcome our guests.
Don’t let us lose sight of the reason Why You have planted us here. But may each member be Christ-like; And show love and godly fear.
This building should never be seen As a monument to man, But a testimony to the God of Heaven That it was built by God’s own hand.
Let not our service be so formal, That a rank sinner cannot come; But let it be a cozy place That even a sinner can call it “home!”
May those who have fallen victim To the Arch-Enemy’s attack; Whether it be adultery, or stealing Lying, cocaine or Crack,
Find in this place a refuge, And healing for their troubled souls; And may help and sympathy be found, Here within the fold.
Give to us wisdom and insight, To find appropriate ways; To keep the doors ajar Not just on the Sabbath Days!
But to develop programs To help meet the needs of others; To be a “service station” to our community To serve our sisters and brothers.
Help us all to be ministers, Not from the pulpit to preach; But by establishing various classes, So all felt-needs can be reached!
May cooking classes be held, Smoking classes, how to quit; May classes on parenting be convened Or whatever is appropriate.
May the young and the restless Find this their place of truth. May programs be developed To meet the needs of our youth!
May this always be a busy place Serving the needs of all; But may we keep it always orderly, And clean from wall to wall.
Make Our Church A Sanctuary
continued
May the outside be well-kept And the grounds, inviting and clean; For this tells much about the people Before the inside is ever seen!
For each member who reside here May Christ be seen in the life; May differences be Biblically settled To avoid conflicts and strife!
May our words be chosen wisely In love and godly fear; May we reach out to each other And show them that we care!
Teach us how to be humble No matter how “great” we be; You only are to be worshipped, For You died to make us free!
May only the truth of the Gospel be preached here; But may it always be presented in love So that it draws and not repels Everyone to our Lord above!
Please, Lord, be present at every service To bless and direct and guide; And, in spite of us, have Your own way And with us, always abide!
So, we dedicate to you, dear God First, ourselves entirely; Then this building we call a “CHURCH” Make it a “SAFE PLACE” for all to be!

The History of Mt. Pisgah SDA Church
The history of the Mt. Pisgah Seventh-day Adventist Church began in 1958 with Sister Etta Bethel Bowles, a member of the Bethany Seventh-day Adventist Church. The Holy Spirit bestowed upon her the “special gift of pioneering”. She started a storytelling hour in her family room, which later became a Branch Sabbath School and eventually the Mt. Pisgah SDA Church. She was joined by family members, including her mother, Marie Bethel, her brother Ronald Bethel, and his wife, Rosemary Bethel. Her sister, Carletha Bethel Robinson, also joined after completing her education at Oakwood College (now Oakwood University).
In 1960, a small group of worshipers was formed. The newly established group began holding services in the garage of Brother James and Sister Marie Bethel. Brother James Bethel became the “First Elder” of the mission.
Under the direction of Pastor C.B. Rock, a series of meetings were held. As a result, several members were baptized, including Sister Martha Holston-Lee, Sister Emma J. Rolle, and Brother Joseph Bowles Sr.
As the congregation continued to grow, the group purchased real estate for a church home in 1962. During this time, Sister Marie Bethel suggested the name “Mt. Pisgah,” which was unanimously approved. Architectural plans for the church were drawn up by Elder Ronald Bethel.
The first service in the previous sanctuary building (now referred to as the Annex) was held on September 25, 1965. Brother Morris Reed, the brother of Sister Martha Holston-Lee, generously donated the first windows and pews. Later, additional church furniture was donated by the “Mt. Pisgah Five” and the Board of Deaconess. A mortgage burning celebration was held from November 10-12, 1972, under the leadership of Pastor Lloyd Rahming and Elder Ruben Cox. All of Mt. Pisgah’s financial obligations were liquidated on December 3, 1976, under the leadership of Pastor James Edgecombe.
The History of Mt. Pisgah SDA Church
Due to the continued growth of the membership, it became clear that a new or expanded building was needed. Adjacent real estate was purchased. A groundbreaking ceremony took place in 1993, and construction of the new building began in early 1994. A week-long celebration for the grand opening and dedication of the new sanctuary was held from September 20-27, 1997.
65 years after that original storytelling hour and over 28 years after the opening of our present sanctuary we are still growing, and are looking to continue, the commission of our Master and the vision of our founders of sharing the good news of salvation and God’s love to those in our neighborhood.
