INTRODUCTION

Once a creative powerhouse, become today?

Stoke is one of a cluster of towns in central England known collectively as “ The Potteries”. The area grew to prominence in the 18th century as the heart of Liverpool and Hull. The area’s many pottery works, such as Spode and Wedgwood, would become global brands. However as the British economy moved away ffrom manufacturing, Stoke and the other Potteries town were left in stark post-industrial decline.

The proposal for Stoke Town prepared by us which aims to Stoke declined after the declin the Post - Industrial period. As ban fabric strated to loose its destroying the heritage mon acter to the town, with a lot along the canal and the high voids in the urban fabric. This projects gives an innov tunity for Stoke Town Center opportunity to flourish eco spaces promoting comunity l

E PROJECT SCOPE

THE CLIMATE OF STOKE

Stoke-on-Trent, as with all of the United Kingdom, experiences a temperate maritime climate, lacking in weather extremes. The local area is relatively elevated due to its proximity to the Pennines, resulting in cooler temperatures year round. Compared to the nearby Cheshire Plain. However, on calm, clear nights this is often reversed as cold air drainage causes a temperature inversion to occur. As such, the Stoke-on-Trent and Newcastle area are generally not susceptible to severe frosts. The nearest Met Office weather station is Keele University, about four miles west of the city centre. The hottest weather are in JULY and AUGUST . The lowest temperature is at JANUARY and FEBRURARY.

RELATIONSHIP WITHIN THE CITY OF STOKE-ON-TRENT Stoke is a conurbation of 6 towns and it having been formed by the federation of six towns in 1910. It took its name from Stoke-upon-Trent where the main center of government and the principal railway station in the district were located. Hanley is the primary commercial center. The other four towns are Burslem, Tunstall, Longton, and Fenton.

They all want to be the center of the city and this disagreement continues to today.

HISTORY LINE

LOOP LINE

Pottery manufacture grew as an industry from a very strong base. By 1740 it was already the center of production for England, by 1800 it was the most important center in the world.

Wedgwood, is a fine china, porcelain, and luxury accessories manufacturer that was founded in 1759 by the English potter and entrepreneur Josiah Wedgwood. It was rapidly successful and was soon one of the largest manufacturers of Staffordshire pottery. He developed a number of industrial innovations for his company, notably a way of measuring kiln temperatures accurately, and several new ceramic bodies such as the “dry-body” stonewares.

BENEFITS OF LOOP LINE

The city is served by the Trent and Mersey Canal, which sees traffic of some 10,000 boats a year. Additionally, That was a good way to transport pottery in the past.

Wedgwood is credited as the inventor of modern marketing. He pioneered direct mail, money back guarantees, travelling salesmen, carrying pattern boxes for display, self-service, free delivery, buy one get one free, and illustrated catalogues.

STOKE - ON TRENT

01. For a hundred years it was a backbone of Potteries travel. 02. The Loop Line was certainly an benefit to travel, over the years providing a service to millions of passengers embarking on shopping excursions, not just to Hanley but to Manchester and Birmingham. 03. It was a boon for business; a conduit for commuters and for kids going to school.

Spode was founded by Josiah Spode (1733– 1797) in 1770, and was responsible for perfecting two extremely important techniques that were crucial to the worldwide success of the English pottery industry in the century to follow.

After some early trials Spode perfected a stoneware that came closer to porcelain than any previously, and introduced his “StoneChina” in 1813. It was light in body, greyish-white and gritty where it was not glazed and approached translucence in the early wares; later Stone-Ware became opaque. Spode pattern books, which record about 75000 patterns, survive from about 1800.

From the maps, the change in the urban fabric of the town center is quite evident. The built area has reduced leaving voids in the urban fabric. A lot of buildings have been demolished over the years leaving significant urban gaps. The University area and the town center were more cohesive earlier which is not the situation currently due to the construction of the highway and the formation of the dead and disused spaces along the canal.

The canal runs through Stoke-on-Trent from the Harecastle Tunnel in the north of the city to Barlaston in the south of the city. The route was designed to feed the Industrial Revolution and to enable manufacturing towns such as Stoke on Trent and the Potteries to benefit from improved means of transport. Josiah Wedgwood was one of the chief instigators of the canal.

The main campus is in Shelton, Stoke-onTrent, and primarily offers law, business, sciences, applied computing, engineering, arts, design, journalism and media production courses. These are split into two areas, one on College Road (on the site of the former County Cricket Ground), and the other on Leek Road. A new Science and Technology facility was opened in 2012 as part of a major redevelopment adjacent to Stoke-on-Trent railway station.

Stoke City Church

Spode factory was established in Church Street, Stoke town in 1776 making thousands of wares each day until its final closure over 230 years later in 2008.

ELEVATION & FACADE ANALYSIS

The charts show the average income level in 7 different cities of the UK and the UK average level in 2011. According to the chart, the average salary in UK was about 21300 pounds, while the average salary in Stoke was just over 17200 pounds. This level was much lower than the British average. That is why fewer and fewer people are willing to stay and work in the stoke. Because they can't make more money by staying here.

OPPORTUNITIES

The economic and industrial decline means poor land values and cheap rent. When we walked in Stoke, the buildigs along the street were mostly old and dilapidated, and some were abandoned, even in the city center. Thus, Stoke is a suiltable place for artists to live and work here, and it’s a attractive city for new industries to establish new stores and factories here.

In the planning, we selected buildings with the characteristics of Stoke, retained part of the steel frame structure, and rebuilt. Some abandoned buildings and closed shops were demolished.

CONNECTION WITH HANLEY

Nowadays, Hanley occupies the position of city center in the whole Stoke area. If we only consider the competition and solve the problem of population loss in local site, it will also have an impact on Hanley, so we consider developing the economies of the two places together and establishing a link between them to make a cooperation. Since Stoke is only 18 minutes' walk to Hanley, we set up walking streets between the two areas and driveways on the outskirts. Setting up a pop-up park area on walking streets to promote the activities of locals and college students. When there is an activity, it will be a small park or other entertainment space. When there is no activity, it is a parking space .

WORK QUARTER

This place is a site full of warehouses and small industries, and of course, few buildings were abandoned. However, the landscape along the canal is attractive. We proposed three steps for this area' s transform: 1. Demolish dilapidated buildings, and retain more valuable warehouses with interesting structures. 2. Plan raods and functional zoning. 3. Rebuild the old buildings and design new buildings.

THE TERRACES

The terraces is an area that is treated as a new high street. It serves a wide range of people, local residents, office workers, tourists and so on. We have introduced new industries in this area and other areas along the canal to activate the local economy. And instead of turning the office area into a separate area, we combine it with entertainment, shopping, restaurants, gyms, promenades and parks. This is to make the region more dynamic. Because if we independent this office area, then this area will give others a sense of rejection, they will feel that this is a professional area, and they do not belong here, such an area will be very cold after the office is off duty, resulting in a waste of urban space in a specific time. If we mix the functions of this area, add entertainment, shopping and restaurants, the vitality of this area will increase.

These functions are relatively centralized. These new functions are also exactly what office workers need after work. Finally, the addition of parks, shopping and promenades will allow more ordinary local residents to enter the area, which will generate more possibilities. For example, many offices need to show their products, and then these ordinary residents will be their potential consumers. There are also some products that need experience, such as Apple's products, Samsung's products and so on. Therefore, we believe that appropriate integration of some functions in the same region will increase the possibility.

Stoke Transport Hub is an important part of STOKE pedestrian STREET.

It is located at the end of HIGH STREET, it connects the pedestrian STREET with the main driveway and is also the only way to get to STOKE in the surrounding cities. There are 3 main routes in the Transportation Hub, people can choose different ways of transportation to go around the whole city and travel to others cities.

The staircase of the transportation hub extends to the pedestrian street, giving pedestrians a sense of guidance.

SPODE POTTERY

Our proposal for Spode aims to bring back the pottery culture in Stoke. The main pedestrian entrance is from the high street which makes the place easy to access. The China Hall still remains as the indoor exhibition area for the Potters to showcase their work while the large open disused land is converted into workshop area with small exhibition spaces. These workshop areas can be accessed from the Spode Campus as well as from the high street. The aim of this workshop area is to attract tourists as it will give an opportunity to the common people to see the best men at work. These workshops would also provide an opportunity for the Potters to come together as a community and enhance their skills. The residential area next to the workshop area is converted into live work studios for the artists who intend to come to Spode for these workshops. The Hotel next to Spode serves as a heritage Hotel with lively and beautiful green spaces for outdoor restaurant seating.

Spode is one of the most important area in Stoke. It is one of the very few heritage structures remaining in the town. Although the structures still stand erect, they are currently not being used the way they used to be when the town was the centre of Pottery Industry. Only the China Hall is used as an exhibition hall and a major chunk of open land remains unused.

ART PLAZA

The new art gallery is at the end of the two tour routes and near to the civic center and China Halls. It was originally a huge parking lot, we are going to build a new art gallery on the original site and we will plan the area in front of it into an exhibition square. It continues and connects the original small square in space. The ground floor of the gallery will provide the exhibition area for local art, just like music, sculpture and painting. There are some studios for local artist on the second floor. Souvenir shops and restaurants will be placed along the square.

HIGH STREET

We set this street to the current highstreet because of the end of the walking street to Hanley and Stoke. The commercial street was the parking lot before, we turn the parking space into the square, and the location of the square is just in front of the Spode gate, which can be used as a meeting space, bringing visitors and local residents together.
