Floating architecture. Separate Service and Served area Functional arrangements. Indoor-outdoor Relationship. View of the lake. Structural Expressions.

This is a studio project from the 9th semester of the bachelor of architecture course to study massings like structural expressions, patterns, form, and volume along with the function. The site is located in the Lake by expressing an expression of floating architecture with the functional relationship. Another point is to establish the frequent flow and strong functional relationship between service areas like kitchens, toilets, etc., and the served areas like different cuisines. There are four types of cuisines in the restaurant including Desi cuisine, Indian cuisine, Thai cuisine, International cuisine. Each of the cuisines are well organized and designed with dedicated service facilities. The service entry is the most interesting and innovative of this project. As the functional area is connected with the land with the bridge connecting the service is provided with the boat with the goods through a separate service boat ghat. The restaurant has a surface parking facility, shaded entry with drop-off, and bridge connection to the restaurant structure. The overall structures have been considered as floating objects while designing for the restaurant functions. The indoor-outdoor relationship has been properly designed for all. The lobby, reception, and waiting spaces have been designed as transitional spaces for all the cuisines. People will need to come to the lobby and check into the reception. In the outdoor area, a pontoon has been designed for the boats. Interested people can enjoy the boat riding along with the tasty foods from the various cuisines.

The main concept behind the project is to give an essence of floating architecture as the site i s in the waterbody which itself demands floating as an architectural design. The floating architecture CONCEPT has been inspired by the long tradition of boats and the relationship between the boat and river as Bangladesh is called a riverine country for its geographical location. So conversion of traditional boats into a floating restaurant with functions, services, and cuisines facilities along with 360 Degree Panoramic view and boating.

GREEN HOUSING FOR

MIDDLE INCOME PEOPLE Key Feature:

Internal Roads and Pedestrians. Community Spaces and Communication. Semi-Basement Parking. Green Columns. Natural Light and Air. Bridge Connections and Terraces. View of the lake.

This is an academic group project from the 8th semester of the bachelor of architecture program. I was in charge of concept derivation to design the master plan along with the detailed plans. The main design objective was to create sustainable housing facilities for middle-income people especially. So keeping the construction costing low is one of the major design considerations of this project so that people of middle income can afford their own home of living in a sustainable eco-friendly environment with all the facilities have been accommodated. There are three types of units A, B, C in every apartment according to the sizes. Every apartment unit has been facilitated with the community spaces and some are linked with bridge connections. So that social interactions and communications can be established with these types of spaces. The prices will set according to the floor areas. As there are three types of units, so people of different income levels can easily afford this housing. All the apartments have been connected with internal roads, pavements, and pedestrians. Each of the apartment blocks has been facilitated with bulk green spaces with peripheral vegetation’s proposal. All the housing blocks have their vehicular parking at the semi-basement levels. A central core has been designed to connect all the floors and units vertically. While designing the master plan the main site consideration was to facilitate the housing people with gentle breezes and serene beauty as well. While detail designing of the floor plans the electrical, plumbing, and other ducting systems have been integrated with the rainwater harvesting system. Building openings have been designed in such a way that natural ventilation along with natural light can easily be accommodated which will enhance and add value to middle-income people living by ensuring their living conditions with their limited income. Providing all the basic facilities to the housing people, another strong design considerations are to facilitate as many as green spaces across the lakeside. So that the lakeside activities give meaning to comfortable and standard living to the user group.

CONCEPT & IDEA

Design Considerations Our main design considerations were to create spaces in different levels according to use for the community people. We tried to give some open spaces in the buildings on different floors. This would be very much effective because the community people would be able to communicate with each other through these spaces Even People can go from one building to another through the bridge connections. All these spaces can be defined as UTHAN. The visual linkage of these spaces is very clear. Also effective for urban communications. Then we have tried to facilitate the dwellers with the courtyard o different clusters. They are also connected with greeneries. These spaces can be defined as ANGAN. Finally, we have created some central open spaces like amphitheater, riverside deck with community facilities like club, community hall, food shops, school, mosques, etc. These types of spaces were the main focus on design. These are called the PRANGAN.

Design Rationality First of all, we were very much concerned about our road network and security. And of the curse have a defined entry for the total housing area. As our site was 30 acres, we have nothing but to give an internal access road of 3 fets with 8 feet of pedestrian networks. But the roads have no exit to the peripheral roads outside the site because of the security of the community people. We tried to create a green belt along with the lakeside roads so that people can have some spaces of taking fresh air, having some morning and evening walks and exercise or communicate with each other. We have designed an amphitheater for cultural and community multi-functional purposes. Moreover, it also gives a 360-degree view of the lake as it is considered as the main site force for the entire site and reflected on the master plan. We have designed the parking lots in the semi-basement level is -5’ below the ground level and the plinth level is at +5’ level so that a vehicle can easily get the clear height as well as parking loops. The driver’s rooms and generator/machine rooms are in the semi-basement level to reduce the noise pollutions. Different types of spaces have been designed for different age groups. The focal part of our design is to consider the southeast side for climatic considerations to make the environment more livable and lively as well. The master plan has been done in such a way so that the served area can have direct visual connections with the scenic beauty of the lake. Overall, this housing can set an example of being an eco-friendly living to the community people.

CONCEPTUAL SKETCHES AND ANALYSIS Uthan refers to a small community space or the inner courtyard of the village home. Usually each of the families owe an uthan of their home

Angan also refers to a community space which consists of few uthans. Angans are larger than uthans in scale and communications.

> uthan

Prangans are large community spaces consist of angans. Generally Prangans are the urban community open or green spaces for multi-activity and funtional area.

Community Service Healthcare facilities Service and Served area. Functional arrangements. Indoor-outdoor Relationship. Community Space. View of the lake.

This is an academic project from the 8th semester of the bachelor of architecture program. The main design objective was to create an Urban Healthcare Hub with modern facilities that will serve a particular community of the urban area. The projects include all the basic functions as an emergency, OPD, IPD, Operation theaters and so that people all over the communities can be prescribed. Considering the site force and blending architecture with nature to give the patients a sense of relaxation and belongingness to nature. The orientation of the building is north-south. So natural light and air are two vital components to design the health care center and consider the site force, the lake view, and air from that part. To provide innovative healthcare facilities to the urban communities. The building is with vehicular and pedestrian entries with a dedicated ramp for the diff. able people. A shaded drop-off with Ambulance parking has been designed. Not only the waiting, receptions, and lobbies but also the patient cabins and doctor’s chambers have been designed to facilitate the maximum view of the lake. The outpatient department, paramedic department, and services have been located on the ground floor along with the community space and central courtyard. The central the courtyard is the focal point of the design as the architecture and nature jointly played a vital role to make it a meaningful courtyard to the people who come to the center or healthcare for the physical and mental as well. Outpatient department maternity and operation theaters have been designed on the second floor which is a zone of the health care building. The in-patient department and the admin block have been located on the 2nd floor of this building. The community space has been designed in the southern part of the site which is linked with a wall and a ramp with the main building. The natural urban green spaces have been designed in such a way that patients or visitors who come here for treatments and prescriptions can also be prescribed with the green serene beauty and calmness of nature to get refreshed.
