Welcome to Summer at the Jersey Shore!

I’m excited to share this “Small Business Spotlight” this month.

With the reality of COVID 19, we’ve been forced to live the new normal of many of our local businesses being closed. Restaurants, Retail, Hair and Nail Salons, and Tattoo Parlors.

As everything reopens with strict rules, we were able to stop by and celebrate the re-opening of Slingin’ Ink Tattoo on Arnold Avenue, Point Pleasant Beach. This shop has been a staple on this street for over twenty five years. It’s conveniently located on the main street downtown and just steps from the Point Pleasant Beach train station, for those clients coming from around the world, it makes the commute easier with mass transit.

It all started with Brody Longo, great grandson of William Wright. If you were a local in Belmar around 1947-1972, you’d know Bill Wright from Sinclair Gas Station and Wright Service Garage on 6th and F Street. In those days, the garage was heated by a pot belly stove where Brodys Great Grandfather, Grandfather and Great Uncle worked.

Entrepreneurship is no stranger to this family.

Brody received his first tattoo as a young 19 year old and he was forever hooked.

He walked out of the shop after his first one, and remembers saying, “I could keep getting them”. The shop owner offered Brody an apprenticeship and that’s how he found himself learning the trade.

In 1995, at twenty years of age, Brody Longo found himself as a first time business owner purchasing this shop from his tattooing mentor. Yes, I said twenty years old.

Two years later, he married the love of his life Colleen.

Colleen, aka “Brodys wife”. (Sorry folks, if you are related to Brody, you lose your actual name because of his local celebrity status) She’s the lady boss behind the operations of the shop. She manages the show and has quite a bit of artwork herself.

Colleen, a Point Pleasant graduate, has always been committed to supporting local businesses. She has always “shopped small” for every shopping need to support her neighboring businesses.

What are you most proud of as a business owner?

Owning this business for over 25 years, most proud of the growth trajectory we’ve experienced through the years. The increase in foot traffic of customers but also retaining the most sought after artists to provide incredible work.

How do you stay close to trends and artwork in this industry?

Trends are an integral part of the business to satisfy your clients needs in this industry.

Where in years passed, trends and newness would be showcased at tattoo conventions and Tattoo magazines, social media has really changed the game. Trends change by the second and artists are always trying to expand on them. Our clientele really drive the trends and bring in HOT design ideas they like.

Where do you find your creative inspiration comes from?

Everywhere! From peers, artists, friends, social media, I can find inspiration anywhere, whether I’m at River Beach or just randomly enjoying my local surroundings. Social media provides a lot artwork that really pushes me to stay relevant.

What are some of your hobbies, outside of your business?

Surfing and fishing for sure. I really like taking advantage of living by the beach. I’m also a crossfit coach at JSA Gym and compete in CrossFit competitions.

Rover Rescue Every Dog Deserves a Loving Home

We have all heard stories and seen images of dogs in hoarding situations. While often started with good intentions, these facilities are overflowing with so many dogs they are not able to be adequately attended to. Dogs may be underfed and malnourished, suffering from undetected medical issues, sleeping in their own feces, develop sores from time spent on rough surfaces, or be poorly socialized. Dogs rescued from these situations need some extra TLC. Dogs that are underweight should be refed slowly. The skinnier they are the slower they should regain. Instinct urges us to quickly pack as many pounds on to eliminate protruding ribs, but too much food too fast can make a dog very sick. Increasing their intake gradually gives their bodies a chance to catch up and wake up. Bland diets are easier on the digestive system, but some pups need a few special treats in their food to entice them to eat.

In some cases, dogs may be free-fed and overweight. This calls for a gradual decrease in food and a reasonable exercise regime. Healthy nutrition not only restores dogs to a healthier weight but improves coats and nails. It reenergizes a dog and prepares them to match the activity level of their new lifestyle. Proper grooming is also important to relieve discomfort and help a dog feel its best.

Mental health is equally important as physical. With so many dogs and so few caregivers, it is impossible for them to get sufficient attention from humans. Typically, they do not get out on walks or exposed to stimuli typical to everyday life. Depending on where they came from before the hoarding situation, they may or may not have experience interacting with people. It is easy for shyer dogs to become lost in the crowd and remain wary of their surroundings. Patience is key when introducing shyer pups to different types of noises and people. They may have handling sensitivities and not like certain areas of their body touched. Warning signs of being uncomfortable include ears tucked back, growling, and avoidance. Flooding a dog with scary things causes them to shut down. Moving at a slow, gentle pace allows a dog more freedom. Oftentimes as relationships are built with their people or as they get to play with other dogs, dogs gain confidence in the world around them and shed their shy exterior. It is good practice to accept a shy dog as they are and celebrate any level of progress made.

It is vital to have a veterinarian examine dogs from hoarding situations, as with so many dogs it is easy for conditions to go unnoticed. Even if we cannot see anything visibly wrong, the chances of this dog having recently received medical care are slim.

If there is an issue, early intervention and treatment is typically the most successful. Hoarding situations have amazing dogs that make fabulous pets, they just may need a little extra time and care to acclimate into everyday life.

The Power of Positive Thinking Beneficial Solitude

The rapid and unexpected changes in daily life can wear down your mental well-being. Being in quarantine really helped me understand the beauty of solitude and quiet. It also allowed me the self-awareness to process my thoughts and the emotions that came with those thoughts. Not something I would do normally unless I was meditating. Our brain and nervous system have a chance to decompress and recharge while in solitude. We become more mindful. I felt a better relationship with myself and those around me. I found that the key to staying on top of your mental health is finding ways to clear your head.

“The dictionary defines loneliness as “sadness because one has no friends or company,” and “the quality of being unfrequented and remote; isolation.” Loneliness is a lack, a feeling that something is missing, a pain, a depression, a need, an incompleteness, an absence of meaningful connection with others.

In contrast, aloneness means “separate, apart, or isolated from others,” and “to the exclusion of all others or all else,” and “unique; unequaled; unexcelled.” In contrast, aloneness implies a conscious choice by the individual for quiet solitude and doesn’t carry with it the negative emotional conditions associated with loneliness. Aloneness has also been referred to as “doing nothing,” and a time for personal reflection.”

The importance of solitude can also be looked at as a benefit through meditation and exercise. While doing lots of walking in quarantine I realized that walking was also part of my meditation. I found myself more creative in thinking. I found inspiration through others during my walk, especially from viewing another’s home. Their landscaping, their shutters color, etc. was all very inspirational for me to do work on my own home. The push I needed to get a good project going. The exercise would also help me with increased focus. After finding the inspiration, I would come back home and my focus on completing the task was that much greater. I found myself working on things that brought me more joy and happiness. Even engrossing myself in writing or focusing on my many businesses helped with a deeper connection to them on a different level.

A break from social media for a few days was also the solitude I needed.

Social media moves at a rapid rate and the amount of information and misinformation was upsetting my energy. The overwhelming feeling of it all would make my energy more negative. Just a few hours of solitude form social platforms really helping me to harness more positive energy. I found good distractions in doing funny tiktok videos with my daughter. The laughter was the perfect medicine.

Unfortunately, life isn’t perfect and negative thoughts will be an unavoidable part of it. However, keep in mind the techniques and benefits to clear your head and emotions. In the long run, facing your solitude the right way will pay off better for you and those around you.

It’s time to take a break, stressors such as money, work, and our current political climate can be difficult to escape. There are methods of alleviating stress that require little effort and can be found right your backyard. Studies have shown that taking time to unplug and be outside with no goal beyond just experiencing the world around you, has a positive effect on your well-being.

Spending time in nature can help clear your head and bring you into the present moment and is a great way to de-stress and relax. The benefits of nature have been with us from the dawn of our species it slips our minds as we are absorbed in our world of flashing screens. The American Heart Association offers some ways to relax in nature including: 1. Watch the sunrise/sunset.

Getting up early to watch the sunrise can help you prepare for the day ahead, watch it set to unwind after a busy day.

Here are some tips to prepare for your own nature adventure: 1. Be aware of your surroundings.

Know your environment and let someone know where you’re going.

2. Protect your skin and body. Apply sunscreen to exposed areas and wear a hat. You may also want to spritz on bug spray or wear long sleeves depending on your location.

3. Wear the right footwear. If your waling or running, make sure you’re wearing comfortable shoes or boots.

4. Stay hydrated. Don’t leave home without the water bottle!

Take a relaxing meandering walk, release the thoughts swirling around in your head and focus on the present moment.

Take time to relax where the air feels fresh and clean and you can enjoy the scenic views.

5. Try yoga or meditation outside.

6. Go camping or have a picnic.

Disconnect and make nature your home.

When your outdoors focus on your senses of sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch. Engaging the five senses can help promote feelings of calm and relaxation. Gaze at the vast sky, breath in the fresh air and listen to the sound of the natural world around you. Some plants release immunity-boosting compounds into the air and being in the sunlight is thought to increase levels of the feel-good chemical serotonin. If you must, schedule time to spend outdoors on your calendar and be sure to leave your screens behind when you go. Once in nature, let your mind relax, take a deep breath and enjoy better health.

Happy summer. We are in the full swing of summer, albeit a different summer. As I write this I’m watching people on a party boat and wondering how many of them will catch the virus as there’s no room for social distancing and nary a mask in sight.

I know people are tired of quarantining and are ready to cut loose and have fun. Problem is many parts of the country are experiencing case numbers like we saw here in NJ in April.

How do we balance the need for fun and connection with safety? It’s a tough question for sure.

So let’s band together and take care of one another. Follow the guidelines for Lynn O’Hara, MS, RD, LPC Licensed Psychotherapist social distancing and mask wearing.

Every person I saw in the grocery store was wearing a mask.

Every person I saw at a deli was not, including the owners.

Somehow along the way the idea of wearing a mask to protect yourself and, more importantly, to protect others has become a political statement. I do not understand that at all. We are better than that. The way we all came together after Sandy was the silver lining in an awful time. It was what helped pull people through a terrible situation. Now I see division and anger. Tempers are short and anger is flaring. Individual rights are being touted as more important than the greater good. To what end? Why? How did we get here?

Until next time, eat healthy, be happy, wear a mask and wash your hands!

Covid 19 is creating stress and anxiety for almost everyone I speak with. The hate and divisiveness is making everything worse. In order to get through this we need to come together. We need to treat every person with the respect we would like to receive. You may not want to wear a mask but for goodness sake, care about your fellow citizens enough to put one on when you go out in public. Contrary to what some news channels want you to believe, science has shown that masks work to reduce the risk of spreading and catching Covid.

There are other things you can do to reduce your risk of becoming ill with Covid as well. Eat well including lots of fruits and vegetables in your daily diet.

Get some exercise each day.

It doesn’t have to be much but it is important to your health to move and get the blood flowing.

Improving your cardiovascular fitness is protective against the virus’s effects. Get outside.

This is helpful for our spirit as nature is very healing. Go to the beach or get out for a walk but get outside. Take time for safe fun. We all need some joy right now.
