Rover Rescue How to Plan and Enjoy a Dog-Free Vacation by Lauren Kehoe

Having adopted my dog right before COVID, we have barely been apart. The longest I had left the little nugget previously was eight hours. When planning to go out of town, I was going to need to find a safe place for him to crash. I was lucky enough to have him stay with a close friend and her dog. While not everyone may have this option, there are still a growing variety of people and places to care for your dog when away. The pet care business has always been thriving, but with more people adopting animals thanks to COVID, there is even more of a need than ever. For well adjusted, social dogs, there are plenty of boarding facilities. These range from dropping your pup off at someone’s home to boarding at pet stores such as Petsmart to high end facilities with dog pools, playtime, and even private suites. These options are typically best for dogs that play well with others, or at least be comfortable being near other dogs twenty four hours a day. Reactive dogs or ones with high anxiety that may be uncomfortable around lots of hustle and bustle may not do as well in this type of environment.

While my pup is dog friendly, he is sensitive to handling with new people and overwhelmed by different noises. He does best in my home or in the home of a familiar friend. Care.com and Rover are both popular groups for pet sitting. The platforms help you connect with different individuals in your area and see which services they provide including any special experience or expertise. Bringing food, toys, and bedding with a dog may provide some comfort of home, but nothing renders solace quite like staying in your own home. Public reviews and ratings of profiles on these websites help ease an owner’s mind regarding who they trust to look after their pup. Depending on the level of self sufficiency, some dogs may be okay with multiple visits a day while others require a sitter staying overnight. Round the clock care ensures more time to spend with a pup and more company. It means more monitoring your pup on the off chance that some kind of emergency occurs. No one can be around twenty-four seven and sometimes sitters will have other jobs, so if it is an older or younger dog that needs even more supervision, nanny cams are a handy option. Confining a dog to a smaller area for visibility and giving their caretaker access to the footage offers an even greater level of protection. Whether we have human kids or not, so many of us hold our four-legged kids to nearly the same position. In order to be at ease about their care when away, it is vital to know they are in safe, capable hands. Luckily there are many animal lovers out there who are willing to give their time and energy to keep our furkids happy and healthy. Take some time to think and research which option would be the best for your pup’s personality, and always have a plan in place in case of emergencies. This will allow both you and your dog to enjoy your vacation stress free!

The Power of Positive Thinking Why It’s Important to Live a Healthy Life by Allison Feehan, N.D., D.Psc., CRMT

Many people think that living a healthy life is watching what you eat and exercising. Although this holds true the importance isn’t just in what you eat and how often you exercise. A life that is healthy is a healthy lifestyle. The same holds true that one should never go on a diet but rather have a diet. If after reading this, you don’t think you are living a healthy lifestyle then it’s never too late to transform it. First, I agree that food is medicine and should be a number one priority in a healthy lifestyle. Incorporating exercise is also extremely important but these two aspects aren’t all that you should be focusing on. Being grateful daily is another aspect of your daily routine that should be a big part of your lifestyle. Count your blessings every day. I count mine either while I am waking or funny enough, while I am brushing my teeth. I assess my day and feel gratitude for my health and health and safety of my family. It is no matter whether the gratitude is big or small. It is the positive thinking that makes our mind healthy. The body listens to every word we tell it. The body can’t tell the difference between a joke or not. Don’t magnify the negative. So, the more often you rephrase your thoughts and the outcomes, the better off you’ll feel and be.

Appreciation. This is different than gratitude. Be appreciative of those around you that are in your circle or on your side. Having a healthy and supportive group of friends, family, co-workers, etc. is super healthy to your lifestyle. If you appreciate them, they appreciate you. The outcome is a healthy lifestyle because people that are appreciative of you do not want to see you doing something that is harmful to yourself or others. Let those people know how appreciative you are for them by giving them a call, dropping them a note, stopping by, making plans to get together, etc. Stand firm in your truth. Some people have a difficult time living their authentic self. Make this a consistent routine. Be yourself, unapologetically. Spirituality or religion is an important aspect to a healthy lifestyle. Connectedness to Source is extremely important to our health and wellness. Meditation or prayer can be extremely powerful and transformational in a positive way. Do what feels right to you here and what resonates with you. Living a healthy lifestyle requires health in the mind, body, and spirit connection. No chair has just two legs. Think of this healthy lifestyle as a three-legged stool. You need all three legs or pillars of health to truly prosper. Our wellness comes not only from our physical health, or our mental health, or our spiritual health but all three collectively. The planet more than ever needs all of us to collectively join together to ensure a healthy mind, body, and spirit. We need it just as importantly for positive transformation. In Health and Wellness

Healthy Morsels, II Do Your Part by Lynn O’Hara

We are approaching the end of the summer. As I sat down to write this article I was feeling a bit stumped. So many thoughts are running around my head about this summer and the upcoming fall. I’m really quite confused by all I am seeing and struggle to make sense of it all. As I watch all the party boats traverse the canal filled with people enjoying themselves in a way that appears carefree, I remember that the kids are headed back to school in a tentative and cautious way. I am struck by the anger and the hate around the mere request to wear a mask and then I hear of someone’s loss at the hands of Covid and because of our failing to get behind the only known ways to combat the spread. I fear we are not done with this virus and will be dealing with it and its variants for the rest of my life. How did we get here? How did we become so divisive and hate filled? I have my theories but I will not opine on those. More important is what do we do about this state we are in? Ocean County at this moment only has 42% of its residents vaccinated, yet when I walk into the grocery store 75% of the people in the store are not wearing masks. This means, in the simplest of terms, that we are going to be seeing an increase in cases of people getting sick and maybe even dying. I know there are many people genuinely fearful of the vaccine and I hope they can come to some information that will help them feel more comfortable in getting one. I also know there are many, many people who believe that no one is going to tell them what to do, that their freedoms are more important than the greater good. This makes me sad. Communities need one another and I know that our community is filled with wonderful caring people. How did we get to the place that not caring if your neighbor catches Covid from you isn’t on our radar as being important? Are we in denial? The definition of denial isn’t that we don’t want to know something, it’s that we can’t. Is that what’s happening? I truly do not understand.

I’m pretty certain that this article may offend some but I have lived in this town my entire life and I can’t make sense of what I am seeing. Why are we not rallying to do the right thing like we did after Sandy hit? One of the silver linings of that storm was the care and compassion that was all around those of us who suffered so many losses. Here we are talking about the threat of human loss, not necessarily material loss, and we cannot seem to get ourselves together to even wear a mask.

Wellness Tips for Fall by Natalie Berko

Days are getting shorter, the weather is cooler, and the leaves are beginning to change color. Mother Nature is making the transition from the heat of summer to the cooler, windier days of fall. Nature won’t adapt to us so we must adapt to nature. It’s time to take a little extra care during times of transition to maintain our immune systems and overall general wellbeing. Try these five tips to gently transition your mind and body into fall.

1. Get Grounded

As the season shift, it’s an excellent time to begin to cultivate some stillness in your daily life. Take some time to connect with yourself. We get so used to rushing, traveling, and running around its time to make a point to reduce the hustle. As Mother Nature prepares for a long winter’s rest, begin to draw your energy inward focusing more on your home. Make your home cozy and warm, take some time to meditate and practice some gently breathing or yoga practices.

2. Eat According To The Season

Take a look around and notice what comes into season in the fall. Winter squash, pumpkins, apples, root vegetables and dark leafy greens. In the summer we gravitate told light salads and cold drinks, fall time begs for highly nutrient rich, warm cooked food and drinks. Try using some warming spices like ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, and turmeric to bring in some fall flavor.

3. Movement

Support the immune system with a lymphatic draining massage with dry brushing before taking a shower. Brush with circular strokes starting at the hands, up the arm, toward the axillary lymph nodes and heat, and starting at the feet, up the legs with circular strokes toward the lymph nodes in the groin and torso. A trip to the sauna or steam room is also great for eliminating toxins through the skin stimulating circulation and promoting relaxation.

4. Clean Up

Spring cleaning applies to Fall too! Cleansing and purification is a great way to bring in the change of season. Take some time to get your home in order, washing the windows, putting away summer things and bringing in some natural elements that echo fall has arrived. You can pick up some colorful mums, pumpkins or even go on a nature walk and collect some pinecones to place in a basket of potpourri. Surround yourself with warmth and comfort this season.

5. Get Some Rest

Sticking to a regular meal and bed time can go a long way in creating balance. Our bodies do best when they are in rhythm with nature. Make sure you are getting at least 7-8 hours a night of rest. If you are sleep deprived, studies show your T-cell count goes down and your inflammatory cytokines go way up, increasing the risk of catching a cold or the flu. The fall is great sleeping weather, keep the blinds closed for total darkness and the temperature cool around 65 degrees.
