Overview of La Jolla

With a dramatic coastline boasting spectacular views, it’s no surprise that La Jolla is one of the most popular beach destinations in California. Surrounded on three sides by the sea and backed by the steep slopes of Mt. Soledad, La Jolla’s coastal profile and quaint village lifestyle evokes a Mediterranean feel. La Jolla’s biggest draw, for locals and tourists alike, are the beaches. During the summer and autumn months, the surf is relatively gentle, with warm waters in the 70s. Swimmers, snorkelers, scuba divers and surfers can enjoy the local beaches at La Jolla Shores, the Cove and Windansea.

La Jolla is part of the City of San Diego, bordered by Pacific Beach to the south, Del Mar to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the west.

The exact origin of La Jolla’s name is somewhat uncertain. Historians dispute whether the name originates from the Spanish word La Joya, which means “the jewel,” or from the Native American term Woholle meaning “hole in the mountains.”

If the streets and storefronts in La Jolla seem older than elsewhere along the coast, it’s because they are. With its fantastic natural scenery, unique in all San Diego, it was a natural choice for the earliest settlers and Native Indians before them. Over the years, the rising demand for rooms with a view has set the market and shaped La Jolla into an affluent community reflected in the upscale restaurants, fine art galleries and luxury car dealerships seen about town. Travelers can still appreciate the simple bounty that started it all, with a driving or walking

La Jolla’s primary zip code is 92037. It is the only neighborhood within the City of San Diego where mail is addressed to read “La Jolla, CA.” Other La Jolla zip codes include: the UCSD campus (92092, 92093) and University City, aka “UTC” (92121). The post office is located in downtown La Jolla on 1140 Wall Street between Hershel and Ivanhoe.

Interesting Facts

• The La Jolla Playhouse was founded

by Gregory Peck, along with actors Dorothy McGuire and Mel Ferrer, in 1947. Peck, most famous for his role in “To Kill A Mockingbird,” was born in La Jolla.

• La Jolla Cove gets big waves only a handful of times each year, but when it does, the crashing waves are a sight to behold.

• Sandstone rocks at Windansea Beach create natural alcoves of varying size, perfect for private parties or rendezvous.

• Other La Jolla residents of note include the late author Theodore “Dr. Seuss” Geisel, Senator John McCain, presidential candidate Mitt Romney, director Gore Verbinski and Nobel Prize winner Clive Granger.

• Windansea’s historic Surf Shack is a popular backdrop for wedding and sunset photos.

• La Jolla High School was founded in 1922.

• Winter swells from Alaska bring six to eight-foot waves and plenty of surfers to these beaches.

• Because the water at La Jolla Cove is protected, surfboards, boogie boards and other floatation devices are not permitted.

• During the summer, parking is at a premium. In addition, narrow streets and numerous pedestrians can make driving a challenge.

Golf at Torrey Pines Golf Course Golfers can tee off at the Torrey Pines Municipal Golf Course. Torrey Pines is a public golf course, open year-round and also serves as the home of the Buick Invitational.

Scuba Diving, Snorkeling & Swimming at La Jolla Cove The La Jolla Cove is a La Jolla landmark.

The Cove offers many interesting reef areas, caves and kelp. This is a great place for underwater photographers, videographers, deep divers and night divers alike.

Hiking or Playing in the Parks There are a number of lovely green parks scattered throughout La Jolla. Clean and safe, they are ideal for relaxing and taking in a beautiful La Jolla day. A few of the most popular are Ellen Browning Scripps Park, Kellogg Park and Cuvier Park.

Westfield UTC, formerly known as University Towne Centre, is a one-million square-foot, three-level outdoor shopping center which lies just east of La Jolla, near the University of California, San Diego campus. Its anchor stores include Sears, Macy’s, and Nordstrom. The center recently completed a one billion dollar renovation and plans are underway to provide San Diego Trolley service.

GALLERIES & ART MUSEUMS Complementing the many popular museums in nearby Balboa Park, La Jolla contributes some notable institutions of its own to the local arts and culture community in San Diego. BEACHES Windansea Beach

Underwater reefs and jutting rocks create fierce waves at Windansea; you’re more likely to find experienced surfers than families with small children. The secluded, breathtaking scenery attracts admirers as well, particularly the romantic type.

The historic and often photographed Surf Shack on the beach makes a popular backdrop for wedding photos and richly colored sunset shots. Located at the end of Nautilus Street, with a small parking lot as well as street parking.

Black’s Beach

Beautiful and isolated, Black’s is located north of Scripps Pier, beneath the Torrey Pines Gliderport and close to UCSD. Access it by walking from The Shores Restaurant or descending the rough cliff path from above. The north portion of Black’s is clothing-optional, where nudists bask in the sun and play volleyball without bathing suits.

La Jolla Shores

A long, wide beach with soft sand, clean water and gentle waves, La Jolla Shores is an ideal spot for families, sunbathers and beginner surfers. The beach is cozy and comfortable, with a nice picnic area at the adjacent Kellogg Park. The beach offers a large parking lot and free parking on nearby residential streets.

La Jolla Cove

La Jolla Cove is San Diego’s most desirable spot for swimming, snorkeling and diving. The water is calm and ecologically protected, providing a safe home for colorful garibaldi, yellowtail, rays and even leopard sharks. Because the water is protected, surfboards, boogie boards and other floatation devices are not permitted. The beach itself is small, but nearby Scripps Park offers a nice grassy expanse for spreading out. Parking is available in nearby paid lots, with a few street spots available.

poor beach. The conditions don’t often cooperate, but when they do, it’s the best dive site in town, with dramatic undersea arches and ledges chock-full of lobster.

The Children’s Pool — At high tide when

Seal Rock is awash, you’ll find the seals hauled out on the small sand beach inside the break-wall. There has been a great deal of debate over the issue of who should have the right to use this beach - humans, seals or both.

It is advisable to check with the lifeguards on site to find out the current ruling, but be aware that seals are wild and unpredictable animals better left well alone.

Casa Beach — This is a tiny beach on the

south side of the Children’s Pool.

Wipeout —This is beach slightly larger

neighbor to the south of Casa Beach. It can be hazardous for swimming because of heavy surf and abundance of rocks.

Marine Street Beach — The beach here is

dominated by teens and locals. Marine Street’s claim to fame is its wicked shorebreak otherwise known as ‘womp.’

Bodysurfers and bodyboarders get short, deep tube rides as the waves hit the steep shelf and unload onto the shore.

Bird Rock — Limited access, no beaches,

no lifeguards and no facilities of any kind make Bird Rock a poor choice for swimmers and sunbathers, but it’s definitely worth a snapshot on the way through.

In general, dogs are not allowed on beaches during the day. Alcohol, smoking and beach fires are not permitted. No overnight camping. Please check each beach’s posted rules.

La Jolla Real Estate

La Jolla is a highly desirable community, and real estate prices here reflect that.

Homeowners in La Jolla, like much of Southern California, have seen an extraordinary appreciation of their homes’ values, making real estate a solid investment in the area.
