TOBACCO SMOKING

1. How many people smoke tobacco?

Nicotine contained in tobacco is highly addictive. In 2020, 22.3% of the world’s population used tobacco: 36.7% of men and 7.8% of women. These are huge numbers which should be reduced to save our health and environment.

2. Does tobacco smoking affect your health?

Heated tobacco products (HTPs) expose users to toxic emissions. So, smoking leads to diseases and disabilities, and harms nearly every organ of the body. Tobacco use is a major risk factor for cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, and over 20 different types or subtypes of cancer.

Smoking also causes strokes, diabetes, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis. It also increases risk for tuberculosis, certain eye diseases, and problems of the immune system, including rheumatoid arthritis, and many other debilitating health conditions.

3

3. Does tobacco cause death?

Tobacco kills up to half of its users who don’t quit. Every year, more than 8 million people die from tobacco use, including an estimated 1.3 million non-smokers who are exposed to second-hand smoke

4. Does tobacco affect non-smokers?

Secondhand smoke exposure contributes to approximately 41,000 deaths among nonsmoking adults and 400 deaths in infants each year. Secondhand smoke causes stroke, lung cancer, and coronary heart disease in adults. Children who are exposed to secondhand smoke are at increased risk for sudden infant death syndrome, acute respiratory infections, middle ear disease, more severe asthma, respiratory symptoms, and slowed lung growth.

5. How to save your health?

Quitting smoking is one of the most important actions people can take to improve their health. This is true regardless of their age or how long they have been smoking. While quitting earlier in life yields greater health benefits.

4

Quitting smoking is the single best way to protect family members, co-workers, friends, and others from the health risks associated with breathing secondhand smoke.

6. What is the effect of quitting smoking?

Improves health status and enhances quality of life. Reduces the risk of premature death and can add as much as 10 years to life expectancy. Reduces the financial burden that smoking places on smokers, healthcare systems, and society.

Reduces the risk of coronary heart diseases, with risk falling sharply 1-2 years after cessation and then declining more slowly over the longer term.

Reduces the risk of 12 different cancers

May improve prognosis of cancers and reduce risk of premature death.

May improve lung function, reduce symptoms, and improve treatment outcomes among persons with asthma.

Reduces the risk of disease and death from stroke with risk approaching that of never smokers after cessation.

Reduces the risk of disease and death from cardiovascular disease.

Reduces markers of inflammation and hypercoagulability..

5

Quitting smoking has many other benefits and it has a massive effect in improving your quality of life. So, we are highly encouraging you to stop smoking.

In the next pages we will know if it is right to use other smoking substances to help in quitting tobacco.

HOOKAH

What are hookahs?

Hookahs are water pipes that are used to smoke specially made tobacco that comes in different flavors, such as apple, mint, cherry, chocolate, coconut, licorice, cappuccino, and watermelon. Although many users think it is less harmful, hookah smoking has many of the same health risks as cigarette smoking.

How many people use Hookah?

In 2018, the Monitoring the Future survey found that Nearly 1 in every 13 (5.6:6.9%) high school students in Egypt had used a hookah to smoke tobacco during the previous year.

About 1 in every 8 (12.3%) young adults aged 19-30 years had used a hookah to smoke tobacco during the previous year. Among 12th graders, annual hookah use increased from nearly 1 in 6 students (17.1%) in 2010 to about 1 in 4 students (22.9%) in 2014, but since that time has decreased sharply to nearly 1 in 13 students (7.8%) in 2018. Monitoring the Future also shows variations in hookah use by region and population density. In 2018, the highest prevalence of use was observed in the Northeast, where 1 in 6 (15.0%) young adults aged 19-30

7

years had used a hookah to smoke tobacco during the previous year, and in very large cities, where almost 1 in 5 (19.3%) young adults in this age group reported past year use.

Other small studies of young adults have found a high prevalence of hookah use among college students in the United States. These studies show past-year use ranging from 22% to 40%.

VAPES

Vaping, It's certainly become a popular trend in recent years. While some people see it as a way to quit smoking traditional cigarettes or simply enjoy different flavors, it's also sparked concerns about health risks, especially among younger users. The long-term effects of vaping are still being studied, but it's clear that there are risks associated with inhaling vaporized substances, particularly those containing nicotine or other chemicals. It's always a good idea to stay informed and make choices that prioritize your health and well-being.

Is vaping effective to quit smoking?

Vaping has been marketed as a tool to help people quit smoking traditional cigarettes, and for some individuals, it has been effective in transitioning away from smoking. The idea is that vaping provides a similar sensation to smoking, including the hand-to-mouth action and inhaling vapor, but without the harmful combustion byproducts found in cigarettes However, while some people have successfully used vaping as a smoking cessation aid, it's important to recognize that vaping is not without its own risks. Ecigarettes typically contain nicotine, which is highly addictive, and some also contain other chemicals that could have health consequences. Additionally,

10

the long-term health effects of vaping are still not fully understood, as it is a relatively new phenomenon.

There have been concerns about the safety of the ingredients used in e-liquids, as well as the potential for lung damage from inhaling vaporized substances. Moreover, there have been cases of severe lung injury associated with vaping, particularly from the use of black-market or counterfeit vaping products containing harmful additives.

Overall, while vaping may have some potential as a smoking cessation aid, it's essential for individuals considering it to be aware of the risks involved and to approach it with caution. It's also crucial to consult with healthcare professionals for guidance and support in quitting smoking or exploring alternative methods.

Does it have an impact on the environment?

Yes, vaping does have an impact on the environment, though it's generally considered to be less harmful than traditional cigarette smoking in this regard. Here are some ways in which vaping can impact the environment:

Waste from E-Cigarette Devices: E-cigarettes and vaping devices require batteries, cartridges, and other components that contribute to electronic waste when disposed of improperly.

11

While some components of vaping devices can be recycled, many end up in landfills, where they can release harmful chemicals into the environment.

Littering: Improper disposal of e-cigarette cartridges, pods, and packaging can contribute to litter in public spaces, including streets, parks, and waterways. This litter can harm wildlife and ecosystems, particularly if the cartridges or pods contain residual nicotine or other chemicals.

Energy Consumption: The production and operation of vaping devices require energy, contributing to overall energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. While the energy consumption associated with vaping is generally lower than that of traditional cigarette manufacturing, it still has an environmental impact.

Chemical Pollution: The production and disposal of eliquids and vaping devices can release chemicals into the environment, including nicotine, propylene glycol, and other potentially harmful substances. Improper disposal of e-liquids or spills can contaminate soil and water sources.

While vaping may be considered less harmful to the environment compared to traditional smoking, it's still important for users to be mindful of their environmental impact and take steps to reduce waste and pollution. This includes properly disposing of vaping devices and accessories, recycling whenever possible, and choosing environmentally friendly vaping products when available.

CONCLUSION

Cigarettes vs Shisha vs Vape

A common belief among people is that shisha (hookah) and vape are less harmful and less addictive than cigarettes, that's why a lot of smokers shift to smoking shisha or vaping when trying to quit. So, how accurate is that belief?

Cigarettes vs Shisha

Many people think that tobacco smoke in shisha is cleaner because it is filtered through water. That is not true. Hookah smoke that you inhale can contain 36 times more carcinogenic tar than cigarette smoke, 15 times the carbon monoxide, and 70% more nicotine than one cigarette. An hour of shisha smoking is equal to smoking 40 to 400 cigarettes. As shisha contains tobacco, it is linked to the same serious illnesses as cigarettes, such as lung cancer, heart disease, infectious diseases, and complications during pregnancy. Inhaling shisha smoke has the same addictive properties as inhaling cigarette smoke because it has nicotine too.

15

Cigarettes vs Vape

Many people think vaping is less harmful than smoking. While it’s true that e-cigarette aerosol doesn’t include all the contaminants in tobacco smoke, it still isn’t safe. Most e-cigarettes have nicotine, which is highly addictive and has many harmful effects. Some types expose users to even more nicotine than traditional cigarettes. E-cigarettes also have other carcinogenic materials and toxic heavy metals. They also cause serious lung injury (EVALI), some resulting in death. The long-term health effects of e-cigarettes are not well understood yet. But the science clearly indicates vaping is not a safe or healthy alternative to smoking. Although e-cigarettes may have less harmful materials to the body than cigarettes, they are a bigger risk to society. Advertisement and flavoring increases their appeal to young people and teenagers as e-cigarettes have become very popular among them. This may renormalize smoking, which is the biggest threat to public health.
