{ Songs of a yearning heart }

Objective › Choose one well-known director and create a hypothetical film festival for the chosen director. We need to find a common thread that appears in a selection of the director’s movies, and conceptualize an aesthetic that brings it to life. Based on the idea, we come up with a developed visual identity and system that shows the director’s style through different media and deliverables, including in a catalog, a DVD collection, a soundtrack, tickets, schedule and products. Approach › Jane Campion is the director that I chose. The common thread I found in her movies was women pursuing love and fulfillment no matter what the cost. I created a vintage visual system with watercolor to express feminine and strong feelings. The name of the film festival is “Songs of a Yearning Heart”, which means different emotions in songs from women’s hearts. { 心中向往之歌 }

{ Coty }

Objective › To find a dead, defunct or dying brand and give it a new life. The brand can be a well known, prosperous company that has gradually lost its core business. The designer should find the brand’s original soul and explore a new direction to carry forward their spirit. The goal is to revive the brand with a new standards guide and visual system and transform the brand to the next level. Approach › I chose to rebrand Coty, which created fragrances in the beginning, and became one of the world’s largest beauty companies. Coty originally used scents to inspire different moods. The New Coty will go far beyond creating fragrances, cosmetics, skin and hair care. Since Coty is an expert in creating scents, there is a potential to study scent to inspire people’s moods and let them live better. Coty will provide a chance for people to enhance their different life experiences through scent interaction.

{ 科蒂 }

Objective › To identify a problem that can be solved through the graphic design process. Do research about the problem, find the target audience and how to integrate a variety of media to create awareness about the problem and help to solve it in the best possible way. Approach › Lots of children eat or touch poisonous plants and are harmed. I created an educational brand, Red Leaf, represented by the poisons ivy leaf. Read Leaf helps children distinguish different plants and understand details of poisonous plants. Also, it helps kids and parents to know more about poisonous plants and stay away from them. The colorful and interesting style helps kids not to be afraid of poisonous plants by really learn about them.

{ Finding myself }

Objective › Create a 32-page book based on things that we see, hear, touch and smell as we go about our daily routines. To develop personal concepts and a central theme, the designer needs to take photos while observing their lives. The entire contents and images in the book should be created by designer. The goal is to experiment with typography and photography and have fun doing it. Approach › The concept comes from the city, San Francisco, which is filled with chaos and noise. People are in a hurry every day and look like a lot of small ants living in the city. We don’t have enough time to stop and ask ourselves “Who am I? What am I doing? Where am I going?” I wrote my personal story about how I started to think about my life in San Francisco, and what I found on my way. I used black and white photos in the beginning to express a lost feeling. Through the process of finding myself, I became clearer and the images turned to having color. { You are so beautiful to me }

Objective › To create a book based on a selected episode of the radio show This Ameican Life by Ira Grass. The challenge is to keep basic principles and explore new innovative ways to communicate with content and images. Approach › The episode called “You are So Beautiful to Me” impressed me a lot. It has two stories about love, and what people mean when they use the word love. One concerns an unlikely woman falling in love with a pretty bird. Another is about a handsome man falling in love with an unlikely woman. I separated the two stories into different sections by different locations. The two love stories are romantic and filled with memories, so I used collage style images with watercolors to show their memories and emotions.

{ Breathe }

Objective › This project is to choose a song and create a music poster that represents the mood and atmosphere of the song. The poster is created by using projector photography, so in the beginning, designers should prepare different materials, such as colors of celluloid films, liquid, glass and other interesting items that can show the ideas and emotions of the song. After taking photos, designers use cutting and collage to create a music poster without Photoshop skill. Approach › The song that I chose was “If You Want Me” which comes from a film— Once. The story is about two unknown music lovers who have had different experiences and lives, but create their own songs together. I used desaturated color to show the unclear and hazy future of their love. They don’t want to be tied to each other through love, and want to follow their dreams to create good music and songs, like birds free in a musical sky.

{ 音乐海报 }

方法 › 我所选择的歌曲来自电影《曾经》里的插曲—《If You Want Me 》。

{ Up to the sky }

Objective › To express our ability to interpret something we see and then design two panels based on it. Designers have to go outside to discover something visually compelling, then take photos. The two panels can be connected or separate, but typography must enhance the feeling of the original images. Approach › I went to downtown San Francisco to discover something to catch my eye. After many days exploring, I took photos of a fire escape. When I stood under the building and looked up to the stairs, I saw the sky with steps. At that time, I felt the fear of the unknown city. However, if I worked hard step by step, I would overcome the fear and become braver and brighter than before.

{ 直上云霄 }

{ San Francisco zoo }

Objective › To choose a brand that doesn’t have an animated logo and create a 5 to 7-second logo in motion for it. The goal is to use clean storytelling to create a fluent and consecutive video. It is a introduction or advertisement for the company. Approach › I chose The San Francisco Zoo, which is an urban oasis. It is a multi-species landscape with giraffes, zebras, kudu, ostriches, storks, and the largest outdoor lemur habitat in the country. Also, San Francisco Zoo has a special steam train and children’s program, so I used the steam train to begin my story. Then, I used silhouettes from the original logo as passengers to greet visitors taking the train. The animation and sound effects make the video more vivid and playful.

{ 旧金山动物园 }

{ Kido }

Objective › A Master’s thesis is a year-long exploration of a chosen topic that identifies a real world problem. The purpose of the thesis is to analyze the problem and solve it through a graphic design approach. From distilling information to doing research and extracting insights for strategies, the designer will develop the solutions for the intended audience across multiple deliverables. Approach › I was an overprotected child when I was young, and I didn’t feel confident and responsible when I was doing things. Also, I found some parents were overparenting their kids in the US, so I didn’t want my experiences to happen to other kids. I created a application so parents can know if they are overparenting, then they can go to my website and subscribe to the magazine and planner kit to get more parenting information.
