Celebrating on Sundays Children in Worship After favorable feedback from the congregation over the past 6 months, children will begin each Sunday School hour (8:30 and 10:30) in worship for about 15 minutes, beginning Sunday, September 14. Children will worship with their families the whole hour on Homecoming Sunday, September 7, since Sunday School begins on September 14. There will now be a Children's Message each Sunday during the school year! Children will be dismissed for Sunday School immediately following the Children's Message on days that there is Sunday School. On Sunday School days, children will walk with Zion's Children & Family Ministry staff into Trinity Hall for a short large group opening and chance to find their class and then will go to small group time with their teacher. Parents will pick up their children from their specific classroom after Sunday School is over. Sanctuary Sundays (when children worship with families the entire hour) will remain in place on Sundays: 10/19, 11/30, 12/28, 1/18, 2/15, 3/29 and 4/5.

Zion Wind Ensemble There's still time to join! If you have your woodwind, brass, or percussion instruments ready to go, you're welcome to join the Zion Wind Ensemble. The Wind Ensemble will be playing on Homecoming Sunday, September 7, at 8:30 and 9:45 worship under the direction of "Kjes," Lee Kjesbo. There are two rehearsals: 

Wednesday, September 3 at 5:30pm

Saturday, September 6 at 9:30am

Come to at least one rehearsal; two is even better! The group is open to instrumentalists from sr. high to adults. Bring your instrument and a music stand. Music is sight-readable. To join in, contact Sherilyn Burgdorf (Sherilyn@ZionBuffalo.org or 763.682.1245 ext. 307). Let her know if you'd like your music in advance.

New Member Orientation The next New Member Orientation will be held after supper on Wednesday, October 8. This orientation to membership provides an introduction to Zion ministries and staff, an opportunity to meet others at Zion, and learna little about what it means to be Lutheran. Those that decide to become members will be formally received into our congregation on Sunday, October 19. The meeting will include:

The last day of Sunday School for this year, will be May 10, 2015.

Creating Sunday morning experiences at Zion that invite,

looking back to our future Back To School. It all starts this week. What a change to our schedules. I know it is mostly for those of us with children in school. But, even those who don’t have children, or with children who have left home, can sense it. Back to school changes everybody’s schedule. Fall brings change but life itself brings change. In one sense, change is the name of the game with God. God is constantly doing new things.

“Do not remember the former things, or consider the things of old. I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.” Isaiah 43:18, 19 On the other hand, God is constant, faithful – something we can count on no matter what is changing in the world.

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” Hebrews 13:8 This fall Pastor Luke and I will bring you a series of messages about the changing and unchanging nature of the life of faith. For instance, Adam and Eve were created in God’s image, with eternal longings built in – that hasn’t changed for human beings today. The message of salvation in Christ and God’s help in day to day life hasn’t changed, but technology certainly changes the way we live it. Come and join us for:

looking back to our future

Fall brings change. Life itself brings change. Why not invite a friend, neighbor or family member to come and be a part of the new things God is doing at Zion?

The next classes are Sunday, October 12, and Sunday, December 14, at noon. Register at ZionBuffalo.org/Baptism or by calling the office.

Connecting With Care Social Media Team

Strength for the Journey

One of the messages in this month’s Looking Back to our Future series will focus on how technology has helped us share the faith in the past, and how new technology can help us share the faith now. One of those ways is using social media to let the community know what great things are going on at Zion.

Adult Education

A new Social Media team is being formed that will meet via Facebook to discuss ways to use social media as a tool for letting the community know what Zion is all about, and encourage others at Zion to use social media for outreach and fellowship. If you are interested in being part of this team, please contact Angela or find the group at facebook.com/groups/ zionbuffalo/.

A new Sunday morning adult education series kicks off this fall on September 28, with topics of interest to the whole congregation at various ages and stages of life. Strength for the Journey forums will be held in the Zion library from 9:3010:30am on the fourth Sunday of the month. Single event speakers will highlight some topics that are crucial to families and individuals in areas of wellness and health: physical, emotional, and spiritual. No cost, no preparation, but a great take-away of ideas and a way to connect with other Zion friends with similar interests.

September 28: “Staying Strong” Resilience and preventative health will be the topic for Dr. Andrew Burgdorf (pictured). What simple things can we all do to stay strong, emotionally and physically, through all ages of life? Hear some practical tips from the view of a family practice physician and also receive an I.C.E. (in case of emergency) form to take home.

October 26: “Navigating Tools for Caregivers” Whether you’ve been a caregiver for a parent, a neighbor, or a spouse you know that you can’t “go solo.” But how do you find the resources needed to care for your loved one and also find the strength that you need as the caregiver? Heather VanCleave, RN, MA, from Great River Area Faith in Action, based in Becker, will present tools to navigate and coach the caregivers.

Wednesday Suppers Begin September 10

The start of school brings the return of Zion's Wednesday night suppers, when families, confirmation students, musicians, committee members, and people of all ages get together for a Zion family meal in Fellowship Hall. Seven supper teams rotate, giving variety to the menu each week. Serving runs from 5:00-6:15pm, with a suggested donation of $4 per person or $15 per family.

If you have time to give as a supper team member, contact Cindy Bonde at cindyb@bwig.net. Teams serve only 4 times a year; an easy serving option with great groups of people.

Creating a community where people are connected

Connecting Through Crafts Sheila and Dave Crawford grew up in Buffalo, and have been married for 16 years. Sheila's parents are "Buffalo" Bob and Mary Lou Mobley, and Dave's parents are Russ and Denice Crawford. Their family includes daughters Allison (13) and Emily (11) and pets Alley, Tiggy and Scamp. Sheila has worked part-time at First Minnesota Bank in Buffalo for the past six years. Prior to that, she was a cosmetologist at Fantastic Sam's.

Craft groups work on a variety of projects throughout the year in preparation for the annual Harvest of Hands sale in November. The groups will complete numerous projects in September, including decorated metal boxes, jewelry, wood and bead crosses, and a project for the Silent Auction. The groups meet in the Wilderness Room on the second and fourth Tuesday morning at 9am and on the second and fourth Wednesday evening at 7pm. The morning group with meet on September 9 and 23, and the evening group will meet on September 10 and 24.

But my most favorite job I had was being a stay at home mom! Working part time still allows me the time I need to spend with my family. In her free time, Sheila enjoys quilting, photography, crafting and spending time at the lake with family. In the summer they try and take at least one trip 'Up North' to Duluth. Sheila has also served on the City of Buffalo Park Board for about 10 years. A few years ago Dave and Sheila started looking for a new church for their family that fit both of their beliefs, one that gave back to the community and one that they would feel a part of. In just a few visits we fell in love with Zion and what they offered. Within the first few months, Sheila signed up to help with the meal packing event, something she had never done before, and found it to be an amazing experience. This past year she was able to get more involved with the event, from set up to take down and everything in between. She has also been involved with the Baby Animal Fair and the Love INC Gala, and served as a Sunday School teacher for the past two years.

In just a few visits we fell in love with Zion and what they offered.

Harvest of Hands

Two years ago at Zion's fall Ministry Fair, the Crawfords were walking around, checking out everything Zion offered, when Bev Danielson stopped Sheila, and asked her if she could sew. Bev showed her the small bags that were being made and filled with toiletries for the Rivers of Hope organization in Monticello which offers support for victims of family violence. Bev also told Sheila about Harvest of Hands, and asked if she would like to come to the group that following Tuesday.

Harvest of Hands is an annual craft sale, held in November, and proceeds are used to feed the hungry in our own community and around the world, through partners like the Buffalo Food Shelf and the World Hunger Appeal through the Lutheran World Federation (see sidebar). Both daytime and evening craft groups (Sheila Crawford continued on page 14)

in relationships and supported in need.

As you are working in your garden and flowerbeds this fall, please remember Harvest of Hands. Jams, jellies, pickles, salsa, and dried flowers are big sellers at the sale. If you have sweaters that you no longer wear, consider donating them to our Sweater Sale (watch the bulletin for collection dates). As you do your fall cleaning, remember we need items for the White Elephant sale. Stop by the Harvest of Hands booth at the Ministry Fair to see some of the items we have created so far, and find information about volunteering with the Korean egg roll project in early October. All are welcome at the craft groups, either to work on the planned projects or to bring your own projects and enjoy the time with new friends. Join us for fun, fellowship, and a sense of accomplishment. Crafters can also work on projects at home. Check out the sewing project kits available near the Information Desk or contact Joy Arens for more information about supplies that are available for home projects. Harvest of Hands is an annual event held at Zion to feed the hungry in our own community and around the world. Proceeds of the 2014 sale will benefit the Buffalo Food Shelf and a global hunger project.

Ministry Fair September 14

High School and Adult

Looking Back to Our Future doesn't end on September 7. This year, the fall Ministry Fair will be held on Sunday, September 14 in the Zion narthex, before and after worship services. The fair will be a great look at the future of many ministries within Zion, in the community, and globally. Take time to wander through the fair and you might find a little bit of 1950s retro mixed with a preview of future events and activities at Zion.

Senior Choir and Joyful Ringers kick off the new year on Wednesday, September 3. Both groups are open to senior high and adults. Directors Michael Walsh (vocal) and Sherilyn Burgdorf (handbells) welcome returning and new musicians who would like to be a part of the Zion choirs. Handbells meets at 6:30pm in the handbell room, and choir meets at 7pm in the Sanctuary. Child care is available on Wednesday evenings during rehearsals.

LifeKeys Fall Class You're Born for This! People may tell you that you have a gift for something, or there may be a spark in the back of your mind about something that interests you. Take time this summer or fall for the LifeKeys class at Zion, and learn more about what energizes you. LifeKeys gives you a chance to dig into who you are, why you’re here, and what you do best. It was offered in a compact retreat style on July 30-31, and will return in a Thursday night series in October. The October class will run on Thursday evenings, October 2, 9, 23, and 30, at 6:308pm. Please consider participating! Sign up now for the fall class. The cost to cover materials is $20, and all other costs are being funded by a grant from the Zion Foundation. The LifeKeys Discovery Course offers participants a structured opportunity to discover or affirm their talents, spiritual gifts, passions, and personality-all that God made them to be. The printed materials use engaging stories, inventories, self -tests and other easy-to-use exercises while the class time offers explanation, support, and just a bit of fun! Pastor Sara Vanderpan will be teaching the class.

Registration for all choirs and handbells is available online at ZionBuffalo.org/music.

Engaging people in a process of discipleship which inspires them

Musician and Teacher

Musician’s Ice Cream Social

Minda Squadroni grew up as a 'PK' with her father first serving as a Methodist pastor, and then working for the Billy Graham Association. In many of the congregations he served, her mother was the choir director. Minda was even put into service herself as a stand-in flower girl at some of the weddings her dad performed. Her parents were the chaperones for summer church youth camps in Colorado, so Minda and her sister and brother always got to go along. As a family they also attended several one week Christian Ashrams.

After the first rehearsals of Senior Choir and Joyful Ringers Handbells on September 3, both groups will get ready for Zion's Looking Back to Our Future Homecoming with a 1950s ice cream parlor with ice cream, floats, and banana splits in Fellowship Hall at 7:45pm. New musicians welcome.

Active Military

I thank God for my parents who have shared their faith with me through their witness. They were, and still are, instrumental in making worship, devotions, and prayer an integral part of my life. Minda sang in her mother's church choirs all through High School, and was in a choir throughout her college years. In my mind I knew I would always show my praise and glory to God through singing in whatever church we joined. Minda has been married to Joel for 38 years. Joel grew up Catholic, so when they married and moved to Buffalo, they looked for a church home where they would both feel comfortable.

We found that Zion was perfect in meeting the needs of both of us with our different faith backgrounds. They have three children, Aaron, 32, who is married to Sarah McBroom (and expecting the first grandchild in September), Emily, 29, and Maria, 26. All three were baptized and confirmed at Zion.

We found that Zion was perfect in meeting the needs of both of us with our different faith backgrounds.

Minda is a musician and teacher. She has taught piano lessons and currently teaches elementary classroom music at Northwinds Elementary in Buffalo and has an after-school choir there through Buffalo Community Ed. She sings in the sextet, The Rainbow Singers, along with other members of Zion, performing at Zion and in the Buffalo Community. She also enjoys her family, friends, music, reading, gardening, baking, and doing jigsaw puzzles. Minda joined the Zion Senior Choir in 1977, and has also been part of the music staff in the past as one of the Zion's church organists, and director of the Joy and SONshine choirs. For many people like myself, the music that we experience as a (Minda Squadroni continued on page 15)

Orders can be placed online each week at localfoodmarketplace.com/localroots from Saturday at 4pm until Wednesday at 4pm, and picked up on Thursdays from 4:30-7:30pm at the Buffalo Community Center (across from the Post Office). Several Zion members volunteer with Local Roots as board members, distribution hosts, and support staff.

Keeping in Contact Zion is a big place, and sometimes things happen in life that keep us from being as connected to the community as we would like. We would like to make sure that all Zion members feel like part of the church, whether they are able to worship regularly or not. If you or someone you know is unable to worship regularly, or would consider themselves homebound, or are living in a senior care facility, please let us know so we can make sure you are receiving communion and pastoral care. We want to make sure all the people of Zion are able to stay connected. Please call or email Ann or Dawn in the office with information as to how we can reach you or someone you know that you’d like us to include in our visitation schedule.

Thanks, Pastor Luke and Pastor Ted

It All Belongs To God

What Do You Want to Do

by Jud Goerss

5 Tips for Changing Careers adapted from the Spring 2014 issue of Thrivent Magazine by Karen Worner

Our stewardship emphasis last fall was “It All Belongs to God.” Reflecting on that theme, we sometimes forget that “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world and all who live it; for he founded it on the seas and established it on the waters.” (Psalm 24:1-2). I recently visited the magnificent Munsinger and Clemens Gardens in St. Cloud with friends, where we were able to delight in a botanical experience of natural beauty. During these special times, my focus is on God’s creation with the multitude of vibrant colorful flowers and distinctive greenery. These opportunities often provide peace, and you see the special blessings God has bestowed on us. The easy part for us is receiving all of God blessings, and the more difficult challenge is how we use our time, talents, and treasures to serve God. The time on earth is given to us by God and he wants us to appreciate the time he has given to us and utilize it wisely. All of us have talents and abilities and we need to use them to glorify God. Treasures mean your stuff and the prosperity of money. We need to plan and make giving a priority and commitment and “Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; for one’s life does not consist in abundance of possessions.” (Luke 12:15). In our Christian stewardship, we need to be reminded that everything that has been given to us has come from God. With your time, talents, and financial support of Zion, we can continue to carry out our mission of “Sharing Christ’s word, strengthening our faith and serving those in need.”

Wednesday Supper Sponsors Just as the family grocery bill continues to grow, the cost for Wednesday supper ingredients also grows. Consider being a Wednesday Supper Sponsor by donating $100 that will be used to subsidize the meals in order to keep the suggested donation amount at a low cost for any and all Wednesday supper diners.

Golf Fundraiser The August 11 Golf Outing was a great success with around 50 golfers and (tentatively) $1908 raised for the Zion Memorial Fund! Thanks to all who participated ad provided sponsorship for the event!

Are you craving something new? Whether it is moving to a new position at the same company or moving into a completely different field—you are not alone! A 2012 Metlife Foundation/Civic Ventures Study found that 31 million people between the ages of 45 and 70 are interested in a second career that combines personal meaning, income and social impact. If it is time for you to make a move, here are five things to consider.

Don’t Rush

No matter how frustrated you are in your current job, don’t do anything rash, says Meg Montford, executive career coach with Abilities Enhanced in Kansas City, Missouri. It may not be the job, but rather stress at home or another birthday that is leading you to feel discontented.

Think About You

Montford advises people to first discover who you are. When she works with a client, she says, “We have to figure out what the person’s values are, how they’ve gotten to where they are, where they have regrets and where they have potential.” Joseph Cavanaugh, president of life coaching company Equip2Equip, mentions that once you realize what you’re really good at, and also enjoy doing, it may become clear what you should do next.

Do Your Research

If you’re targeting a certain company, go beyond its website and social media sites to talk to people who already work there. Does the company’s values match yours, in practice and words? You should also figure out the particulars. What is the average salary? Are jobs available in the field? What training or expertise would you need?

Prepare Financially

You may experience some financial swings with a job change, especially if you (Changing Careers continued on page 17)

meet throughout the year to prepare items for sale. I was excited but at the same time very hesitant about doing this, after all I knew no one in the group, and I have never participated in any church group in the past. That next Tuesday I had a talk with God as I was driving there. I was in need of a little extra courage and strength to get me through a personal struggle. If He would help me get through that, I would go to this church group thing and help out there. I went into church did my "thing" and then I had this meeting that I was not looking forward to, and everything went smoothly! Now two years later, I am so thankful for taking that first leap! I have gained friendships with people I would have never known otherwise. I look forward to going to each and every meeting! Sheila became the newest and youngest regular at the Harvest of Hands craft group, where projects have included working with alcohol ink, iris paper folding, glass mosaics and more.

I've learned things I would have never done on my own at home. It feels good to know that the hard work that we put into making the project will change someone else's life. Harvest of Hands is always in search of new crafters and ideas! If you are crafty, and want to spend a couple of hours of your time with a group of wonderful ladies, please check the church calendar for the craft group schedule.

Wednesday, September 10. Kids’ Place childcare ends at 5:30 pm, and at that time all children should be with their parent/s or other adult (not wandering the building). Childcare for parents taking part in evening activities begins at 6pm. For the safety of our kids, childcare will also be provided after supper, beginning at 6pm. This option is for parents taking part in evening activities at Zion. Children should be registered for Wednesday activities in advance, especially if using either (or both) of these childcare options. Children need to register and pay for Wednesday activities in advance, especially if using Kids’ Place childcare. Kids' Place is $20/child/year if your child is participating in one of the choir/bell groups or $60 if just attending Kids' Place. Bus transportation from the schools is $50/family/year. Registration, schedule and other details can be found online at ZionBuffalo.org/after-school.

Registration for all choirs, Kids’ Place, transportation and childcare is available online at ZionBuffalo.org.

part of worship draws us closer to God. By being music leaders we are encouraging others to join in and raise our collective voices in spiritual adoration and praise. The choir gives us a chance to use music to minister and reach people in ways that are different from the spoken word. I cherish the lifelong Christian friends I have made. I appreciate the opportunities that Zion provides for me to use my gifts and talents. Working closely with the staff and pastors of our church has been an honor and a blessing. Minda remembers that at the previous church building, across from the Discovery School, the choir would sing from the front of the church at the second service. Before entering the service, the 70 choir members would wait in the chapel, where there was a speaker, so they could hear the service. We could hear Pastor Blair strong and clear, and no matter what his intonation was, you could always count on him singing with full enthusiasm and fervor.

Members are encouraged to download our mobile guide and use it to access the calendar, find sermons and announcements, register for events, and connect with staff and social media. A highlight of Minda's music ministry was singing for the Minneapolis Area Synod Convention at Gustavus and getting to play the organ in their chapel. I enjoy the singing, the fellowship, the repertoire, a chance to use my talents, and the connection I feel to God through music. Minda's passion right now at Zion is the Global Mission committee and she sees missions as an important part of Zion's ministry. She was surprised to learn that God had a plan for her to go to Zambia, and had prepared the hearts of 6 others who would become her companions in a mission trip to the Villages of Hope in Zambia in 2012. Two of her children had previously volunteered at The Villages of Hope and were inspirations to her. Our trip to All Kids Can Learn, Villages of Hope, was a growing and deepening faith experience. I am so grateful that we are supporting All Kids Can Learn International and that we have a new team that is going to the Villages of Hope in December 2014. When we stay connected with our Global Partners, not only do they reap the benefits, but our own faith gets strengthened in ways only God can foresee. I anticipate our Global Mission partnerships growing and flourishing at Zion in the coming years. Minda was a long time member of the Worship and Music committee, a member of the Zion Foundation, and served as a confirmation guide for both her daughters. Since we moved to Buffalo in 1976, I have felt an integral part of the Zion community of believers. Zion has provided many avenues for me to serve God, strengthen my own faith and connect with fellow believers in a supportive, trusting, and caring church community.

I enjoy the singing, the fellowship, the repertoire, a chance to use my talents, and the connection I feel to God through music.

Biweekly Email Updates In addition to this monthly newsletter and ministry specific emails, a bi-weekly update is now available which includes information on a variety of events and opportunities within the next two weeks. Subscribe at ZionBuffalo.org/subscribe.

Minda's favorite Bible verses are the 'love chapter' (I Corinthians 13) and Psalm 100.

Our Mission... Zion seeks to Share Christ’s Word, Strengthen faith, and Serve those in need.

New Staff Lynn and Darin Botts have been married for 22 years. They moved to Buffalo from Plymouth seven years ago. Darin is an architectural draftsman at Murphy & Co. here in town, and Lynn has previously worked as a medical secretary, scheduler, and transcriptionist. Their daughter, Chloe, is entering 9th grade at Buffalo High School, and their son, Noah, is entering 3rd grade at Parkside Elementary. They felt there were many activities and opportunities for the entire family to participate in at Zion, and became members last spring. At the new member orientation, Lynn learned of the new Facility Coordinator position, applied for the job, and started working at Zion within about a month. As Facility Coordinator she schedules events, meetings and activities that happen at Zion, both internal ministries and for community groups that use space at the church. She also helps with setting up and tearing down of activities and various custodial duties.

Our Vision… Helping people experience the joy of life in Christ by: 1. Celebrating on Sundays: Creating Sunday morning experiences that invite, welcome, engage, and inspire people to live for Christ. 2. Living God’s Call: Engaging people in a process of discipleship which inspires them to trust in Christ, grow in faith, and serve God’s world. 3. Connecting with Care: Creating a community where people are connected in relationships and supported in need.

She enjoys talking and meeting with the various people who use the building, and the variety of job duties. Zion has a fabulous staff. Everyone that works here is always so happy and helpful. We all work as a team. It’s refreshing to see that in a workplace. I enjoy coming to work every day and seeing everyone. Lynn is also occasionally a part of the worship team that sings at the 9:45 and 10:30 worship services three times a month, and hopes to get involved in volunteering at the Buffalo Food Shelf and other ministry areas at Zion. In her spare time, Lynn likes to cook and bake, read, travel, and create digital photo albums.

Everyone that works here is always so happy and helpful. We all work as a team.

North Minneapolis Wonderful Things Are Happening Adapted from an article by Pastor Kelly Chatman in the August issue of ‘Faith Matters,’ the newsletter of Redeemer Lutheran Church. In July, we heard about more tragic gun violence and death in North Minneapolis. In response to such troubling incidents, I feel the need to shout as loud as I can, to anyone who will listen, to not allow what is negative to define our reality. There are wonderful things happening in North Minneapolis because we, the church, people of faith, are here. For example, more than 300 people attended the first Redeemer summer cookout this year. In partnership with our neighborhood association, we celebrated the completion of the community bread oven with fresh pizza and bread baked by neighborhood residents. In partnership with others, we fill neighborhood spaces with positive, community-building activity. We employ fifteen high school youth, teaching them how to navigate their first jobs. At Venture North Bike and Coffee, we employ high school age youth as bike mechanics and as coffee baristas. Yesterday, I overheard one of our North Minneapolis youth, employed in the garden, introducing himself as a farmer. Young people are learning to care about what they do, and how a job is about more than just a paycheck. Redeemer and the non-profit Redeemer Center for Life form a social network, promoting positive change in North Minneapolis. We are a social network of faith-inspired partners, supporting positive community at Venture North Bike and Coffee, Milda’s Café, urban gardens, weekly cookouts, Redeemer Music Arts Academy, and other enterprises. All doing good in this neighborhood. I urge all of you, the next time you hear about a tragic event in North Minneapolis, remember that we are the church, God’s social network, building positive change. We, my friends, are in a powerful partnership with God, who creates and sustains us in our efforts to do good in the neighborhood.
