In the comtemporary society, people are forced to finish endless tasks, learn different knowledge, and meet the goal of the society, especially in Asian world. While during official holidaies, some people stay at home and doing nothing and let time fly by, others travel around, eating junk food, glance at hot spot filled with visitors and go back to work with tired body. But few people allocate time for whole human recovery and reflect the key point of their life.

EXECUTIVE SUMMERY

The Golden Hill Hospitality aims to explore the approach to find life balance and restore energy for the population under high stress.

Located in Golden hill park in Zhenjiang, a small economical friendly city in the busiest and richest part of China, the hospitality own abundant natural resource and naturally attract visitors from adjacent big cities with tired mind.

The design of Golden Hill Hospitality emphysis the influence of space and utilized the information space can deliver to people. Design is trying to apply philosophy of Chinese Zen into interior design to create restoritive living and travel ing experience. Visitors will experience calm but diverse activity, jump out of the routine of stressful life and anxious mindset. They can feel the boundaryless potential in life, but also embrace sense of security and belongings in their interaction with nature, art, and philosophy.They will also build stronger body with moderate exercise, release endorphins and feel proud of themselves.

Sometimes, breaking the boundry of life and change what people are used to is a hard step. All solutions are used to make it convenient and cost-less for visitors to step out of comfortable zone and develop a healthier life style.

Besides medical support, Buddism became a placebo for the anxious souls, especially for GEN Z (Chen, N.,2023). The nation's "spiritual economy" is booming. Religious and Zen philosophy is a alternation medicine for young people when they feel anxious and depress in front to fast pace of daily life, competitive society and less certainty. "It is too popular to live in temple and work as a short term volunteer and help with daily cleaning task", reported by Liao Zixi, visitors found their peace and comfort in the temples away from hustle and bustle life (Lim, D, 2023).

Introduction

Accroding to data, depression (54 million) and anxiety (41 million) are two main prevalent mental health issue in China (World Health Organization,2024). Among the population suffering from mental issue, 16.6% didn't get cured for their whole life. Only 3.4 % of patients asked for medical support in the past year of 2001, the number goes to 8% in 2005 and 81.3% by the end of 2018 (Chang, X & all, 2021). More people realized about the issue and are tring to find support to cure the mental illness.

Regular aerobic exercise have been proved to reduce anxiety and depression (Sharma, A, 2006) which can be another reason why the volunteer life in temple is popular. Based on research, 26.7% of Chinese people have habit of working out which is half of percentage in the United State (Allison, 2023). The government have been educating people importance of exercising and encourage more people to form the healthy habit. While the increasing population fall in love with regular exercising, amount of Indoor gym within walk distance is insufficient. Most of fitness facility are located in big city ad 30%-50% of them close down because of covid-19.

This project renovated from a government officer training center as an extension of Golden Hill Park in north-west corner of Zhenjiang City, Jiangsu province. There is a famous temple located in Golden Hill Park where tourists visit for religious purpose. The surrounding area in park have been developed to a park full of lotus, lawn and all kinds of flower trees citizens can enjoy the nature during holidays.

My capstone building, adjacent to the Golden Hill Park, will be developed into a comprehensiveness hospitality design, providing a restorative space near temple, away from hustle and bustle city. It will also allow client enjoy individual space for reflection.

Part of this project is decided to become a Gym to follow the healthy life trend and make daily exercising facility available for 12 residential blocks around. Inspired by Leed and well requirements as well as population preference on exercise, aerobic exercise area, biking, team-class, equipment renting office, shower space, will be provided to reduce inconvenience pushing people away from health life style.

Conflict 1: Mental issue in High pressure society VS. Needs for peaceful life Based on research, depression and anxiety are two main prevalent mental health issue mainly caused by social pressure including academic achievement, competitive working opportunities, wealth accumulation, social discrimination, class solidifcatoin (World Health Organization,2024).

Besides these factors, unhealth family atmosphere including anxious parents, exposure negtive maternal cogniton, action is also causing depression in younge generation ( IH;, G. S. n.d.-a).

The third reason for mental health issue laid on high density city and lack of access to nature (Wang, R, 2019). Community, as basic unity of the society can positively impact mental issue through approches like biophilia design, increasing personal space, and homony life.

ISSUES ANALYSIS

Core Proposition Away from big city, this project located in a relatively small and slow city. With the Buddhism context around the site,it is a refugee protect people away from pressure everyday from daily life and let them forget the worries for some time. In my capstone project, peaceful individual space will be designed to provide lower desity enviroment contrast the busy city context. Space support for human activity will not just be connect with nature outside of the room, but also interior biophilia design. Harmoney community will be provided with calm music, natural sound as background noise, fun art work and book as well as happy and calm people in the space. The Zen philosophy will be applied to lead people focus on the present, notice the vase world and minimize their anxiety caused by their desires.

Conflict 2: Tendency of nationwide fitness habit VS. Inadequate fitness facility.

Based on summary of government meeting, here are four main obstacles pushing people from forming healthier habit. First, the overall quantity is still inadequate, especially the lack of fitness facilities around ordinary people. Second, there is significant disparities between urban and rural areas and regions. Third, the facilities are not updated, connection between natural and ecological spaces is inadequate. Fourth, the intelligent management and service mechanisms need to be improved (Review of Previous Sessions, 2024).

When we zoom into the site, There are 12 residential dense block around golden mountain park within direct distance of 500 meters contain at least 48000 families. Even through the golden mountain park can support part of exterior exercising needs, the park have limited open hours and needs tickets. Plus, it is exterior close to water and grass, mosquito, humid and hot weather and over-crowded population can be an obstacle for citizens to finish exercise goals everyday. However, the only 2 indoor gym is at least 5000 meters directly away which is completely out of walk distance. This project can build the bridge between citizen's increasing need for healthy life and inadequate facilities and help embracing nature while working out.

Core Proposition Through designing a indoor exercising facility, the obstacls of halthy life trend can be solved in residential community around Godlen Hill park. More poople with different age have access to walkable gym with professonal, and up to date equipment. As an indoor exercising space, consistant environment is provided without sacrifacing the beautiful natural. Users can see the includig lotu pool in the Golden Hill park and lawn surrounding the building and feel breeze which can be an additional attraction. The adjacent dining hall, bath, restrooms, retail, cafe minimize time consumption related to daily excercising.

Conflict 3: New need of comprehended tourism oriented City development VS. Old internal oriented producing City plan.

Social media era helped more tourist from surrounding cities choose ZhenJiang City as a destination during holiday. However, the city plan haven’t been fully rethink to accept huge amount of tourism and provide convenient and comfortable living condition for them. Base on the Site analysis, the nearest hotel dense block is 1500 meters direct distance and need to walk 46 minutes. And the direct distance to nearest commercial center for food and shopping is more than 4000 meters and need to walk about an hour.

There are bus station and place to park scooter, but limited parking lot for car for visitors drive from surrounding cities. To develop tourist industry and make golden mountain park serve better for visitors out of the city , the project will be combination of hotel, restaurant and shopping center.

Core Proposition Serve more than gym and hotel and meditation space, this project also provide multiple ways to afford people have short rest in different ways including sit down, lay down, play with phone chat. This function will be spread out through the loud, mixed, an quite area to maximize their usage. They will also be helpful to connect the rest space with dining area, retail, cafe, bookstore so that clients can grab quick food and enjoy the break from hike in the golden hill park.

With a few traffic lane surrounding the site, this project will be a good start or end of the trip, which will support the Golden hill park become a completed, supportive a considerate comercial center. This will also be an exmple for block reform towards tourist city and becom e. Another hot Spot among younger generation who follow Buddism.

The Project is located in Zhen Jiang city which is surrounded by 7 and more cites with population above 2 million. Most of them are within 2 hours driving distance. Surrounded

by Yangtze river and hugged by hills, Zhen jiang city is attractive city for visitors with low price, abundant nature view, and diverse history.

Zooming into the top right map, The building is sitting inside of the Golden mountain park and connected with other building with a few bridges. The location share the intersection of nature and historical background with the park but also have its independence from the slow paced park.

Surrounding of the building have been developed into dense residential blocks within 500 meters. There are also some K12 schools, and supermarket, driving school facilities support daily routine of these residential units.

Connected with North side of side, there is lotus pool, shown in Figure X. This view can be seen from 3 and 4th floor of the building. The best scene viewers can see happens from June to August with endless dark green lotus leave and pink or white lotus flower spread out in the pool like stars. Visualizing a lotus flower in the heart while meditation is a common practice. In eastern traditions, lotus represents purity enlightment and unfold of spiritual conciousness. The lotus flower is also believed to have deep connection with peaceful mind and spiritual growth.

On the east side of building located the buddism temple with a tall tower. Every day when sun rises, the whole world is just lighted and warm light spilled on the temple. Muffled Bell ringing, that is the start of a new day. Based on the article about shamanic guide I found online, watching sun rise can help us find the natuaral rhythm, develop positive mindful awareness. On deep subconscious, people who witness the sun rise develop the faith that everything will be okay (Stokes, J. 2024). Client bathed in the early sun shine can get positive hint and start the day with motivation.

The ancient commmercial center and wharf is another hot tourist attraction. The grey brick walls, stone textured arials is the summary of architecture style in ancient south China. My capstone design will also apply some of the element from the wharf and tie the atmosphere back to the popular ancient context.

More than 100 years ago, this area close to Yangtze river belongs to rich tradesman.

Goods comes and goes on ship and a lot of trading happened on bank when ships stop by.

The tradesman always have a private living units to stay for a few month keep company with families and servant. Quiet, elegant, enlighten vibe is popular among the families who include reading, creating poem, watching flower, listen to opera as part of daily routine.

As what shown in structure diagram above, the historical residential block consists of private living units for extended family. Sometimes, two families can live together in one unit. There are clear separation based on gender and generation. Privacy for each part are protected.

On the first floor, partition wood panels are used with tradition patterned hollows, they works as window, door, decoratin. They have a similar idea of the Zen view.

The existing building is a government related training center. But now it is discarded and the interior is not available. Based on the picture shown in the last page, I restored the floor slabs as well as ceiling height. There are 2-4 floors for different part of the building.

The overall style of the building is pretty modern, formal and dignified. It have one trim on left wing and surrounded by lawn in south, golden park on north.

Sun path go through its southern side so its southern side with glass facade is more bright. While the northern side is darker and potential colder.

In terms of zoning, The main entrance is at southern side, so I guess the lobby is also on the southern side. While meeting rooms and offices are around the shell of building, maybe more on the Sour tern side. There are also back doors at the northern side, connected to a garden with corridor around it.

VISITOR Before pandemic, the population of visitors from outside of Zhenjiang City have a consistent increasing tendency and the average amount is 66485 per year based on statistic. After isolation period, the freeze number of population is warming up to 38450 per year on average and can explode to 26000 in 7-days- holiday( Review of Past Events.

by Jiangsu Provincial People's Governmen5, 2024). Similar hotels in other nature park can accept 4000-7000 visitors and 90% of rooms are reserved during holidays. As only hospitality design, this project is expected to have the capacity for holding at least 1000 people at a time. The secondary functions as Dining Hall, gym, shopping center provide reasonable income to support daily operation input outside of holidays.

Among population living around Zhenjiang Gold Mountain, over one third are senior citizens who have a good amount of time and willingness to travel. Similarly, There are two schools around ( Children age range from 7 to 15). They have the traditional practice of spring/fall trip to parks around.

In China, most of people have more introverted personality. They also have strong connection between family members. In most of time, families travel together, exercise together and have less communication with strangers.

Based on personality and age, space should be designed suitable for family of 3-4 people.

How to keep privacy and achieve balance between slower and quite adult space and playful enriched space for children become the challenge.

This theory is developed by Kaplan in 1995. This theory explains how experiencing natural scenes can help relive mental fatigue. There are four key points fro restorative environments: Fascination, being away, extend and compatible. They separately represent the sense of wonder, sense of detached from worry, Sense of connection with lager world and alignment of human goal and environment characteristic ( Basu, A., Duvall, J., & Kaplan, R. 2019).

Beside beautiful golden park view with mountain, trees, lotus pool and temple, the Lawn and flower around site provide closer connections between human and real natural.

Clients can see the green color,m smell the grass and water easily.

Summer evening, cicada some and water wave hold people in the arms.

At this moment, human goal of happy and sound alien with the inclusive nature. It would be amazing if wholesale restorative experience can be extended into interior environments.

This theory can not only help with maximizing benefits of golden mountain park to human life, but also provide an opportunity to enjoy a different way of life and prepare clients better for their fast paced routine. This hospitality design aims at create a sense of light weight, maximize openness and awareness of the space. Historical living pattern and environment can be refereed as an approach to pull people away from present and dive into a pace unfamiliar for them. The sense of unfamiliar is expected represent the sense of wonder and detachment.

Accordance | Environmental determinism The theory of Accordances is developed by J.J Gibson explaining influence environment act on human. It can enlarge the tendency of action with effortless trigger, positive emotion and feeling. We perceive our surroundings in a completely unreflective, automatic, synthesizes, per-semiotic way It can encourage people's willingness to explore and stimulate cognition (Gay, F., Cazzaro, I. 2024). Suitable environment can support people achieve their goals even make people more creative (Greeno, J. G. 1994).

The fact is that centered furniture layouts in large rooms enhance presence but lower narrative engagement. While scattered or peripheral furniture layouts seemed to improve narrative engagement ( CHI '21, May 2021). We also believe that these tools of an artificial aesthetic can provide us with enormous and new possibilities of correlation between descriptive parameters, correlations that can prove to be more or less relevant, fragmentary, doxastic in deciding the way in which a set of subjects experiences the feeling of a place ( Gay, F., Cazzaro, I. 2024).

Based on this theory, I hope the design create unconnected wonderland and each of them tell different stories and trigger different emotion just like the pictures shown. Both of them are assembly but different emotion memories are shown. We can encourage more people join in exercising and put more attention to their health. It can also be a good place for children to develop cognition, build more neuron connection through enriched stimulation and release their nature of running, climbing, shouting etc.

Concept Statement

ZEN & Site •

(POINT FIVE, 2023)

DESIGN CONCEPT

The philosophy of Zen is originated from Buddhism in 13th century. It descriptor different internal stages both positive and negative. With the instruction of Zen philosophy, budding followers can view themselves more clearly, realize their why they are feeling stressed, unhappy, and pain (5 hindrance: sensual desire, ill will, sloth, restlessness, and doubt).

Through Zen philosophy, learners can reach the state of calm and happy. The process of how people getting there is called 7 enlightenment: mindfulness, investigation, energy, joy, tranquility, concentration, and equanimity. People need to realize that they put too much focus on 5 hindrance, enlarged their impact, forgot their initial goals. Instead of cut off all of human wants, we can fulfill part of them and release the desperation and bring concentration into present, see the vast world, realize how small they are, how short their life are, and how small their hindrance are. They think deeply alone in a quiet space, And then give themselves the answer of that is the most important thing in the life span, and what is the good method to achieve it.

There is a famous legend called "Tale of White Snake" is the most Golden hill Temple. A white snake transformed into a girl, who married Xu Xian. A monk by the name of Fahai jumpt out to seperate them because they break the rule of world. The snack and Monk fighted and Golden hill Temple was flooded.

Located close the famous temple in gold mountain park, this project is expected to expand the influence of wisdom in Zen further into follower's daily life instead of just make it a commercial practice of praying for good luck.

Concept Application Examples Chinese Zen art is deeloped from Zen philosophy. Artists are commited to express their free thoughts about life through visual drawing instead of words, calmly but vividly.

In most of Chinese Zen art, natural elements are descripted with a few prints and leave a lot of white space to show the vast and enless world with limited paper size.

In China, artists are looking for ways to blend human into nature. The analoge features of natural elements into personality and emotions. This is also aliened with restoritive threory.

The boudry is vanishing between own and lose, human and nature, inside and outside. In the most of time, people are running after the answer yes and set boundry for no. Their world is not complete. But without the boudry, there is nothing to run after, people can sit down in calm and enjoy the whole world.

Concept Application Examples Natural Harmony: The space is planned to reflect natural beauty and promot a peaceful and harmonious atmosphere .

Simplification: reducing clutter and focusing on the essential elements of space, also enhancing the spiritual experience of the space .

Material Quality and Emotional Impact (Affordance): The choice of materials is crucial in conveying the desired emotional state. The design considers how light, color, and texture influence human feelings and contribute to the overall spatial experience .

ZEN & Spacial Design Architect: Ludwig Mies van der Rohe German-American architect "Less is more, God is in the details" Project : Farnsworth House This is a weekend retreat outside Chicagom. With beams and glass, Forms are simplified and void are extended just like Zen Art, leading clients to explored the relationship between people, shelter, and nature (Zen philosophy). The house has been described as sublime, a tem ple hovering between heaven and earth, a poem, a work of art (Wikimedia Foundation, 2024).

Design concept + Site and cultural: Nowadays, More and more young generation leave village for work, only senior citizens and left-behind children leave in dangerous buildings lack of design and suffer from poverty. This design is inspired by the memory of rural area in senior citizens mind. Designers used earth, red brick and the traditional cubic shape to mimic the roughness rough village appearance. Through design, positive memory of village life were brought up, living condition were improved and the supportive community were built (Chen, C. , 2023).

This architecture have similar form of traditional Southern Chinese Units as analysis in historical part. It inspired me a different occupation of this form of residential unit. It can be included as "space in space" structure in hospitality design instead of flat structures in most of hotel. The Yellow lights and red brick created a sense of roughness and countryside feeling, and sense of unfamiliar for urban clients. I also love the feeling of home, sense of close community relationship in building which is also balanced by privacy.

Space and movement: Court yard is a spark light of design, grandparents can sit in the yard and have tea, with young kids running around. The shared intergenerational space represent a traditional life routine in China. It brings out dusty memory in the corners of a lot of people's mind.

PRECEDENT ANALYSIS

Precedent 1

Core issues + Architectural form and relationship to context : The main issue solved by this project is home crisis for elderly population in rural and poor area as well as left-behind children. The house is expected to be comfortable for maximized client within limited budget. Designers elevate the house to 3 floors, only keep accommodation function in single room and encourage enriched usage of space (Chen, C. , 2023).

Project Name: Yusan Cafe Location: Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture China Architect or Designer: Edge Architects Year built: 2023 Project size (SF): 216 m² This project is a special Cafe design.

Instead of most of cafe table connect with table or tables plus stool, this cafe consist of separated semi-enclosed houses for small group. It is a good example for restaurants and cafe shops for introverted personality and small groups of client.

It can also be a choice for restorative experience and woven nature into my capstone project (Shuangyu, 2023).

Site and setting: This project locates at the foot of the mountains to the west of Eryuan County. There are well-preserved traditional villages of the Bai ethnic group.

Design Concept: The project is inspired by well preserved traditional village. Designer repeated wood box ( house in village), and created restorative quite space for people in hustle and bustle city.

Architectural form: 13 similar but different wooden box. Architects laid out the wood boxes with twisting, detaching shifting methods, and created an abstract sense of domain (Shuangyu, 2023).

Material and construction: plywood produced locally in Yunnan, combination of board and metal parts.

Precedent 3 Project Name: Gymnasium of South University of Science and Technology Location: SHENZHEN, CHINA Architect or Designer: URBANUS Year built: 2019 Project size (SF): 9735 m² I picked this program as an example for gym/ sport area in my project. The project also located in hills and blend into nature pretty well. The shape of building, The equipment, indoor and outdoor running space are designed perfectly. I am digging into this project for reference of gym design based on same popular sports in China (Li, Y. X. 2021).

Architect think traditional indoor gym is not attrctive enough to encourage more people try to do more exercise.

Next to the mountains, the Southern University of Science and Technology Gymnasium aims to be an example of this new approach.

The huge roof slides down along the rock mountain, hangs in the air, and stretches out a large eave to the west, providing a shady space under the local hot climate condition Figure 40 (Li, Y. X. 2021).

Inspired by the surrounding environment, multi-level flexible platforms, ramps, bridges, and hiking trails are designed to make connections between indoor & outdoor spaces of different levels, establishing a series of open running routes (Li, Y. X. 2021).

Color, material, light are three pillars for gym design. The ground are resilient ad painted into bold color.

Most of lights used are track light and provide enough light more extra needs when people are doing sport.

The width of trails are about 6-10 feet.

As intersection of aerobic train and smaller gear sport, badminton, ping pang, volleyball, basket ball are most popular, we need open space just like the picture below.

In most of case, a family with 3-4 people play together needing one separate space. Area shown in this picture can contain 8 units.

Designers are designing to create a state of nothingness for visitors to awaken unfamiliar senses. Each floor is melted with spatial and temporal background, which is intended to help the audience empathize when the senses open gradually.

On the first level, designers even make up time change based on the background from deep night to dawn. The spacial back ground change from ground to wet land. Steam water make the view blurry but minds are getting more and more clear.

The element of wind are brought into the interior space on the second floor. Visitors can step/ lay on the grass/ water to see the movement of ceiling, the light swing represent existence of wind.

Concept for the third floor is forest, Birds are chirping, the water is flowing, and the sky is glimmering. Five senses are opened and you can also enjoy a drink with the scent of homegrown basil (Chlsey. 2021).

This project brought up a question: how to balance the traditional style requirements of the "red" scenic area while also meeting the "Internet celebrity" needs of young people? This is also the question for tourism development in my capstone. Even through the dismiss based park as well as nature is beautiful, the most visitors are actually middle-aged citizens.

We need to come up with a low-cost and attractive coffee and book shop plan that can attract young people (Gallery of Dashali Rural Coffee Bookstore, n.d.).

I picked this place as a inspiration for bookstore + cafe. Similar to the site in my capstone, this project is super close to mountain and pool. This project provide a good example of design traditional material, roof structure as interior decoration as well as different usage of stair.

Designers started the concept from the site of low-lying terrain. The slop roof allow the overall design to be humble to its surrounding to keep the sense of "red" scenic location. While the opened up facade facing pool build connection between nature and visitor. Huge balcony above water is semi-open allowing wind come through.

We can also see the intersection of two theory: Restorative and accordance. I started to think what actions we can do in nature that can be helpful to achieve the 7 positive stages in Zen. Then how can I design the space to trigger people do the expected action. What components, colors, circulation, layout, are powerful symbol for human and how to trigger some emotion to do something.

Precedent conclusion

All five pendents I collected here guide me thinking about the diagram and strategy of each functional space including hotel, dining center, cafe, gym, spa and gallery. The connection between emotion and color, touch, view are clearly shown in precedent 4 based on which I started to think about other projects: Why the first precedent feel like home? Because it reminds people to the time in their poor, undeveloped but warmed sweet childhood with rough bricks and dull colors. Why Yusun Coffee making people calm down, and feel comfy?

Because it looks like a cave within nature, where people relax million years ago. It encourage people to lien on the wall and curl up.

09 COLOR APPROACH 60 Based on the research done by Martín López, Lucía, and Ana Belén FernándezFigure Díaz, Covid-19 not only impact emotion like anxiety and depression but also changed preference of texture and color. The word “brightens” is mentioned most in the answers and gray, brown, white, blue, and beige are the colors most people love. The most preferred material is texture, especially Cotton, followed by Woods, Paints and stone. Due to Lockdown situation and the psychological problems, participants convey their preference of neutrality without overloaded or stimulating elements which represent “life” and “light” (Martín López, L., & Fernández Díaz, A. B. 2022).

Xiaonan, Another Chinese researcher also state that indoor environment, land and warm materials like wood, bamboo, soil will create a strong sense of belonging for family members. And the bright and simple materials will create comfortable, confident and enjoyable emotional state and frame of mind.

There are also a lot of re-purposed traditional housing in China used concrete, masonry, steel and etc. These material, also antique technology on these materials can create a traditional and nostalgic atmosphere of interior space, reminding people the vivid image of the old housing and visitors’ childhood (Xiaonan, W., & Ruizhi, Z, 2017).

In space planning step, noise space and quiet space will be seperated into different areas, even different floors to reduce influnce of noise.

Each function of space can be relatively seperated by doors to contol noise transmit.

In the places like dining space, library adn art gallery, clam music, nature vocie will be played as back ground to hide private talks and encourage people be quiter and respectful to the space.

EE01 Create DEI Assessment and Action Plan • Age: This project surveys for wide age range clients and staff. It is aiming at encouraging all citizens develop healthy lifestyle and enjoy their connection with nature with the philosophy of Zen. • Sexural orientation and self-identity: With more exprosure and education of people with different sexural orientation and self-identity, Designers have the responsibility to provide comfort and considerate service like all gender restroom, seperate bathroom. we also encourage to offer euqual working opportunity to staff from different orientation.

• Economical background: to offer service to people from differnent economical background. Free art gallery, library, Cheap Healthy food option, low-payment gym and afford hotel units will be provided.

• Effort will be put into achieving ADA principle to make sure people with disability can enjoy the same experience with others.

ED03 Promote Nature, Place and Culture • In common places such us common circulation routes, shared seating areas and rooms, good amount of natural elements will be added including day light, plant, water, daylight.

• Chinese Zen philosophy will be celebrated in this design. Practice of simplified interior design that maximize openess, unlimited space, connection to nature will be insist through out the project. Consistent colors will be used.

• Through Zen philosophy, enlightment process is expected to spread to more people, or at least make people feel free, comfortable and delight.

• Local artists, historical Golden hill temple, traditional residential design will be refered and reflected into this design.

ED07 Implement Acoustic Work Zone Control • Acostic design will be one of the main considerations in space design.

• Loud zone includes Gym, tennis court, dining hall, commerical kitchen, mechanical rooms, AV/IT closets, bar, social spaces.

• Quiet zon includes concentration area, art gallery, library (study area), privacy restorative spaces.

• Mixed zone will be placed between loud zone and quite zone, including book store, Cafe, retail, Offices.

• Circulation zone is essential for blocking noise including pathways, stairs, lobby elevator well and so on.

• Not applicable zones includes other areas without significant sources of sound like storage rooms, janitor rooms.

ED09 Provide Workplace Thermal and Lighting Control • In spaces like private office, hotel units, and sigular exercising rooms, user have control over RV, fans and heater. In the previate cafe unites, reading area, shared blanket can be offered at service center.

• Indiviadual lighting fixtures will be placed in study area in library, cafe space, hotel unit, office, dining table. seperation board, curtain or other method will be considered to decrease influece of lighting change based on individual user.

• The overall ambient lighting system is not controled by individual occupant but it is adjustable based on day time and daylight level.

EE07 Develop Stress Management Plan • The Site is walkable foir both visitors and citizens live around. Side walk in nature is available.

ES2 Provide Restorative Space • The main purpose is for relaxation and restoration. Space may serve multiple functions but is not to be used for work.

• Quite space such as concentration area, artgallery, library (study area), privacy restorative spaces are expected to meet the Well requirements below: • Minimum size of 75 ft² plus 1 ft² per regular occupant or 2,000 ft².

• Adjustable lighting , Sound interventions (e.g., water feature, natural sounds, sound masking), • Thermal control (e.g., fans, shading), Seating arrangements that accommodate a range of user preferences and activities (e.g., movable lightweight chairs, cushions, mats), Nature or natural elements, Subdued Zen colors, textures and forms, and Visual privacy.

ES2 Provide Restorative Space • Gym including aerobic exercise, weight lifting, yoga, dance room, as well as tennis court, Swimming pool willbe provided.

• The minimum size is 270 ft2 plus 1 ft2 per regular occupant or 10,000 ft2 ES5.6.7 • Local Food Access, food quality, food Sensitivities will be take care of in dining facility.

I cauculated the project cost seperated based on differnet function zonings. it can be pretty rough based on difference of construction and market in United States and China.

The Overhead, profit, bonding is set as defalut: 10%, 5%, and 1%.

The total budget is about 10.253 million dollars. and the budge pr square footage is about 113.8 dollars.

The Golden Hill Park is desgined for people under stress of study, work and mental issues.

Located in a relatively small and peaceful town, and adjacent to Buddism temple, people can have another view of their life with inspiration of Zen philosophy.

The Golden Hill hotel is designed to explore a new way people spend their hoilidaies. The experience away from hustel and bustle city, expensive price and stressful work load can pull the visitors away from the vortex of of unsatisfaction and pressing. At the same time affordable access to health food and exercise facility en introducing a different life style.

Clients can see the invatation and can try to have a motivated life with minimized cost and incovience.

PROGRAM SUMMARY

The nature including hill, lotus pool and large lawn around the site seperate the building with the surounding city context. The maximized connection between human and nature is benificial to mental health as well as immune system based on restoritive theory.

In terms of design, the challenge of this project is how can designers tell the story, deliver information in ways without words. Shape, color, textures, circulations are the main ways client understand the space. They can be impacted emotionally and physically without even noticed their surroundings. I am trying to design a environment that can make most of visitors turn to a peaceful, cheerful and happy mindset. I would love to shift visitors' focus from a small world surrounding them to the larger world, in the nature, in buddism, in their dream.

The approach I learned from the precedents and Zen philosophy to solve the challenge include the uage of glass and steel, transparency materials, daylighting, indoor biophic design. Ceiling heights, horizontal and verticle lines, and high saturated and variation colors will be designed carefully to create either holy, peaceful environment, friendly and cheerful and energetic atmosphere, or home-like happy and safe atmosphere.
