OKTOBERFEST Entertainment line-up to feature expanded German entertainment The Big Bear Lake Oktoberfest celebrates 44 years of German style family fun and good times this year. Rated Southern California’s #1 Oktoberfest, this Fall’s festival once again will expand the entertainment line-up to feature two bands from Germany and more free contests.

The Big Bear Lake Oktoberfest has continuously expanded its entertainment offerings over the past five years, providing guests with a wide variety of music, dance groups and contests. With the addition of the outside Rocktoberfest Spaten stage last year, Oktoberfest visitors enjoyed traditional Oktoberfest German bands and a variety of Country, Classic Rock and Blues bands.

This year the event will feature two German bands playing over three of the seven weekends. A long time favorite of Big Bear’s festival, southern California’s own, “The Express,” will once again kick-off of the festivities on Sept. 13 & 14 and will return later in October to round-out the festival 44th year, performing again Oct. 11, 12, 18, 19 & 25.

Express have performed to 1 million plus fans since they began playing together.

Oktoberfest guests over the years have participated in free contests including Log Sawing, Steinholding and Beer Pong.

Traditionally, the Big Bear Lake Oktoberfest provides over 70 opportunities for guests to participate in. Additional Log Sawing and Stein-Holding contests have been added to the outdoor stage. As always, signs-up are taken the day of the contests and are limited on a first-come basis.

Oktoberfest once again gets “unplugged” an additional Friday night this year. Fans will be treated to an inside look into the history and early beginnings of Oktoberfest while enjoying a night of top German food and beers. The five-course German dinner will be paired with a variety of

German beers and spirits. Entertainment includes story telling by the Uber-Burgermeister and founder of Oktoberfest, Hans Bandows, as well as several of Oktoberfest’s key personalities.

ADVANCES IN DENTISTRY If it has been awhile since you’ve sat in a dental chair, there are many advances and new product introductions for helping you achieve good dental health.

Dental Implants: Twenty years ago, when we lost a tooth, the usual options for replacing the tooth were a dental bridge or a removable partial denture. A dental implant is a surgical fixture that is placed into and allowed to fuse with the jawbone. The dental implant essentially replaces the root of a missing tooth and holds a replacement crown.

Although modern dental implants have been in use since the 1970’s, improvements in technique and design over the years have made it the preferred option for dentists. First of all, implants have a high rate of success (close to 98%) and their longevity can span a lifetime. Additionally, implants are conservative in that no other teeth are affected in replacing a missing tooth. (In the case of dental bridgework, adjacent teeth next to the missing tooth space require crowns to hold a bridge in place.) Lastly, implants have the feel (or “proprioception”) of natural teeth when we chew because they are anchored in bone.

Composite Fillings: Although silver mercury filling material (also known as amalgam) is still in use, tooth-colored filling material called “composite resin” has become the preferred material of choice for most dental fillings. Aside from the benefit of esthetics, this material has the additional benefit of a mechanical bond to teeth. This “bonding” effect allows for better adhesion of the filling material to the tooth as well as provides a more cohesive tooth that is, in some ways, “glued” together. This benefit also allows for a more conservative filling by needing to remove only decayed or damaged tooth structure whereas with amalgam fillings, the prepared space needs to be deep enough to keep the

material from falling out. Amalgam fillings may still be used to reduce costs for patients or in cases where good tooth isolation from saliva cannot be achieved for the placement of composite resin material.

All-Porcelain Crowns: If you have to get a crown, the hope is that it leaves your tooth much stronger and better-looking.

For a long time, the most natural-looking crown that provided a precise fit was made of metal or gold with porcelain baked (or “fused”) on top called a porcelain-fused-to-gold (PFG) crown. It isn’t perfect because it does not have a lifelike translucency and there is sometimes a black line that is visible at the gumline due to the underlying metal/gold. With the development of newer material, we now have metal-free crowns that are highly esthetic and strong. Although there are still many applications for the PFG and all-gold crowns, there has been a significant shift among dentists in choosing to place the all-porcelain crowns that have strength as well as esthetics.

Digital Dentistry: Now that we are well into the Digital Age where computers and other devices are the norm, dentistry has also kept up with the times. Digital X-rays have multiple advantages over conventional dental X-rays. Firstly, the amount of radiation required for digital X-rays is lower than conventional film X-rays. Secondly, the image captured is instantaneously displayed on the computer screen for the dentist and patient to review. Lastly, because the image is

digital, a copy can be easily transferred or stored.

Other digital-based dental applications include CAD/CAM (computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing) technology for the fabrication of dental restorations. This means that dental crowns can be made in the office while you wait.

Knowledge Base: Over the years through study and research, we have more of an understanding of how to prevent and treat dental disease. Studies show that the incidence of dental decay has declined steadily over the years.

The major factors attributable to this are a more dentallyeducated population and the use of fluoride. It is very common today to see kids and adults in the dental chair that have no existing fillings or cavities during their visit.

Additionally, gum disease is a risk factor to heart disease.

Although research has yet to conclude that one causes the other, there is a growing body of evidence that gum disease may be linked to heart disease. If we think of the mouth as the gateway to the body, it is not too far-fetched to think that it can affect our body as a whole. Getting your teeth in shape is a win-win for your smile and your well-being.

Cinderella A Musical Theater Production

In our “Bricks 4 Kidz Engineering” class using LEGO bricks. Students will experience hands-on engineering fundamentals as they build different motorized models that relate to a given theme. Each week, students will build a different invention or gadget and will learn the mechanics and engineering principles behind each model (examples include a walking spider, rotating tornado, a dragster or a catapult). Math Olympiad

Math Olympiad is a nationally-run math enrichment program. Students will meet once a week to participate in challenging and creative mathematical problem solving.

The program is designed to give students who have an aptitude & love for math, additional challenges beyond the traditional classroom environment. Our goal is to foster a love for mathematics, develop flexible mathematical intuition while providing the thrill of meeting challenges.

Students should be high achievers in the mathematical arena and be ready to have fun.

Academic Chess

“We make chess fun!” This curriculum is designed to fit the needs of all skill levels. Continuing and new students are welcome. Every chess student will receive an Academic Chess workbook according to their own skill level. Chess increases IQ and teaches children to think deeply, gain confidence, solve problems, develop patience, compete well, visualize results, strategize and plan. The study of chess has been proven to increase mathematics and reading test results in elementary school-aged children. In a Texas study, regular (non-honors) elementary students who participated in a school chess club showed twice the improvement of non-chess players in Reading and Mathematics between third and fifth grades on the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills. Chess dramatically improves a child’s ability to think rationally, increases cognitive skills, improves children’s communication skills and aptitude in recognizing patterns, therefore: proper study and practice of chess results in higher grades, especially in the areas of English and Mathematics. There will be a school-wide chess tournament towards the end of the session in which students will earn awards, key chains, medals, and/or trophies!

Academic Origami

The Learning Connection is a positive alternative for working parents in need of quality child care. TLC offers more than just child care. It offers children kindergarten through 6th grade, a positive and meaningful before and after school experience as well as full-time summer and non-school day camps. TLC is a structured program designed to help children develop social, physical, and mental abilities. Group activities as well as individual time will help each child grow. TLC is located at each elementary school campus in the Saddleback Valley Unified School District. Students attending these schools are eligible to attend the program on that campus during the school year. During the summer the program is at various schools and all 1st-8th grade children in the community are welcomed.

Staff is committed to offering your child a safe and fun experience. Each location has a Site Coordinator, a Sr. Child Leader, and a number of Child Care Leaders who together plan and implement a monthly calendar filled with a wide variety of activities. Transitional Kindergarten children are welcome to enroll in TLC before and after school.

TLC Kindergarten Enrichment Program This program has an extraordinary monthly activities calendar aimed at developing the whole child ~ socially, emotionally, physically, and academically.

Each month a daily calendar is planned, providing themed learning and activity centers focused on complementing SVUSD kindergarten content standards. A variety of hands-on, child-interactive environments are provided that weave academic concepts into fun-filled art, science, and movement activities. Preschool Connection

The Department of Child Care Services has developed The Preschool Connection, Preschool Connection Plus, Best Buddies, Toddler Connection, and The Kindergarten Connection programs to serve the Saddleback Valley community.

These programs are offered with different attendance options with a daily schedule of three or four hours. The programs provide an enriched classroom environment with guidance, experiences, and materials including “Handwriting Without Tears,” a pre-reading readiness curriculum. Daily activities include readiness learning activities, music, art, games, and outdoor play. Parents are kept informed through event flyers, newsletters, and calendars. The Preschool Connection programs provide an enriching, safe, positive learning environment offering the opportunity for development through personal growth, involvement, interaction, and exploration. Dedicated Preschool Teachers and Assistants have education and experience specific to Child Development.

The programs are held in TLC portables on the campus of 11 SVUSD elementary schools.

Fees range from $515 to $740 for the fall session

Preschool Connection PLUS Ages: 3-5 Years / For children 3 years of age by Sept. 1, 2014 9:00 am-1:00 pm / 2-3 days a week Locations: La Tierra & Trabuco Mesa Schools The Preschool Connection Plus Special Friends is a four-hour program that was developed as a part of the SVUSD Special Needs Early Childhood Center. It includes the same curriculum offered in Preschool Connection... plus our Special Friends. This program is composed of typical children who participate in combined activities for approximately two 30-minute sessions with their Special Friends. This mainstreaming enhances understanding and friendship for all children. Combined activities allow Special Friends to model typical behavior of the Preschool Connection children. Light lunch required.

It is a blended class of children from the Preschool Connection and the Early Childhood Center. The instructional program is provided through a team-teaching model with a Preschool Connection teacher, a credentialed special education teacher and instructional aides.

The Kindergarten Connection is a pre-kindergarten readiness class. It is a five-day per week program with the focus on developing and practicing skills needed for a successful kindergarten experience. Each class has 25 children led by a teacher and two assistants.

The daily activities help each child build on their existing skills and improve readiness skills for kindergarten. The curriculum enhances basic reading and math readiness, language development/dictation, gross and fine motor skills, accelerated pre-reading readiness skills, and “Handwriting Without Tears” curriculum.

Beginning Basketball Leagues

(Preregistration is required) DD Division: League emphasizes skill development, participation and fun! Hoops are lowered to 8 feet and junior basketballs are used. The first 30 minutes consist of practicing fundamentals, followed by 30 minutes of game play.

D Division: League emphasizes skill development, participation and fun! Hoops are lowered to 8 feet and junior basketballs are used. The first 45 minutes consist of practicing fundamentals, followed by 45 minutes of game play.

C2 Division: Utilizes referees but no score is kept. Hoops are set at nine feet. This division stresses participation and fun. This league provides an excellent transition from SVUSD Beginning Basketball leagues to SVUSD Boys and Girls Youth Basketball Leagues.

Games begin the week following orientation.

Uniforms and schedules are distributed on Orientation Day. Saturday and Sunday games (D&DD) are played between 8:00 am-12:00 pm. Friday night (D&DD) games are played between 5:00-8:30 pm. Times are determined by gym availability and number of teams in each division. Same team/coaches’ requests must be made no later than the Wednesday prior to the scheduled orientation.

Shooting Stars Basketball

This program is designed for special needs athletes or anyone who, for whatever reason, cannot participate in the SVUSD Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball league. Players will be grouped by ability to create competitive teams and provide any needed support. League stresses fun and participation. Registration includes Orientation Day, jersey for all new players, and a trophy. All games will be played on Sundays. Times to be announced after registration is complete. Every week players will practice, and then will play a 45 minute game.

Volunteer Coaches and Teen Volunteers are welcome.

Our philosophy is to develop young men in the game of basketball on and off the court while helping them achieve their goals of reaching their potential. Policies & Procedures Parent Supervision: All parents are responsible for the supervision of their children. They must stay throughout the duration of the lesson and/or training.

Parent Check-in: Parents must sign in each day before their student may enter the pool.

Make-up Swim Lessons: Make-up lessons are only performed if the pool is shut down for maintenance or inclement weather. Make-up lessons may be available for a fee. Check with the on-deck supervisor for availability.

Pool Closure Policy: If the pool is closed, a make-up lesson will be performed. No refunds will be given. Check with the on-deck supervisor for availability.

Water Diapers (Swim Lessons): In order to prevent pool closures, swimmers who are not yet potty-trained must wear a plastic, non-disposable swim diaper.

Late Pick-up: Parents who pick up their athlete late will be charged a $10 fee per occurrence.

This fun water polo class is a great way to introduce your child to the sport of water polo. Spashball is conducted entirely in the shallow end of the pool. Over the fiveweek course, children are challenged to learn how to egg beater and master the basic skills such as passing and shooting. Children must be water safe and able to swim the length of the pool.

Bronze Level swimmers are a combination of our youngest athletes and new members just learning how to swim. This group learns in a fun environment, with coaches in the water to assist as students break down the basics of the four strokes. Power Aquatics is open to everyone regardless of skill level. We feel that starting players will develop faster in a clinic-type setting with more focused attention to individual development. Introductory practices are held in both the shallow and deep end of the pool to provide a fun and safe environment. This group focuses on learning to eggbeater, pass, shoot and basic skills/rules of the game. When athletes have mastered a certain skill, they combine with the youth level in controlled scrimmages during practice. Players who have developed the basic skills set, will be invited to continue their development at the youth level.

Silver Level Swimming

Swimmers have a sound understanding of technique and work to master the fundamental aspects of each stroke: butterfly, backstroke, breastroke and freestyle.

This group would be considered “intermediate” level swimming. Athletes are able to do multiple laps of each stroke. In addition to stroke technique, students learn how to do proper starts and turns. *Silver group may participate in a 30 minute optional dry-land practice where they will use resistance bands and perform exercises to strengthen their swim skills.

Please have swimmers wear tennis shoes.

Gold Level Swimming

Having mastered the four strokes, most swimmers in the Gold group are registered under the USA swimming organization. In the USA swim meets, our gold group swimmers have earned “blue” times and/or Junior Olympic time standards. In addition to stroke refinement, the group focuses on building endurance, strength and conditioning. Although this is our most prestigious group and our athletes are committed to excellence, practices are fun and run in a recreational environment. Whether athletes swim for personal enjoyment or to swim at a national level. *The first 15 minutes of practice is dry-land where athletes use resistance bands and perform exercises out of the pool to strengthen their swim skills.
