The American army of 1776 came mostly from middling families who cherished the revolutionary principles of liberty and freedom but understood them in various ways: the collective rights of old New England, the reciprocal rights of Philadelphia associates, the individual rights of the backcountry rifleman, and the hegemonic rights of the Fairfax man.

The acts and choices of these men were an expression of their beliefs. So, also were their autonomous ways of choosing that made General Washington's job more interesting, to say the least.

Other patterns of choice appeared among the armies of the British and German regulars in 1776. They were longserving volunteers trained by modern methods to engage the will actively in the service of others. In ways that varied in detail from English to Scottish and German regiments, these men shared values of hierarchy, order, discipline, honor, loyalty duty, and service. Their writings show that they despised the American rebels and the revolutionary cause. The meeting of these armies was more than a clash of weapons and tactics. It became a conflict of ideas and institutions in which people made different choices and chose differently.

I personally believe Minneapolis is a perfect example; officers need to be able to police themselves. A rookie should be able to engage in stopping an event like Derek Chauvin, without the threat of being reprimanded in any hierarchical way. These days in a situation like Minneapolis, with all the different cell phones and videos, the evidence would be astoundingly in favor of the rookie for doing so and would save lives.

On the lighter side, the snowboard industry is being DUSTED! 18-year-old Dusty Henricksen hails from Big Bear Lake, California and recently scored the Gold Medal in the X Games. Also, this year, Dusty stabbed a backside quad cork 1800 (which is four flips and five spins).

This had never been achieved before — a confident way to turn-on your veteran boarders, studs, comrades, and competitors. Some kid from Carlsbad, California, was quite impressed with it.

italian cioppi

Brimming with fresh seafood in a tomato and wine broth that tastes like the sea, cioppino is a delicious Italian-American fish stew.

HERE'S THE RECIPE INGREDIENTS

6 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 2/3 cup finely chopped shallots 3 cloves garlic, minced 3 tablespoons butter 1 1/2 cups dry white wine 1 (28 oz) can crushed tomatoes 1 (8 oz) bottles clam juice 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano 7 sprigs fresh thyme 1 pounds fresh halibut (cut into 2-inch pieces) 1 pounds littleneck clams (about 18 / scrubbed) 1 pound large scallops 1 pounds extra large raw shrimp (peeled and deveined) Fresh chopped Italian parsley Sliced lemons for serving

PREPARATION In a large pot, heat 4 tablespoons of the oil over medium heat.

Add the shallots and cook, stirring frequently, until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook, stirring constantly, for 1 minute more. Do not brown.

Add the wine and increase the heat to high. Boil until the wine is reduced by about half, 3 to 4 minutes.

Add the crushed tomatoes, clam juice, salt, red pepper flakes, oregano, thyme sprigs, and 2 cups of water. Bring to a boil; reduce the heat and simmer, covered, for 25 minutes.

Meanwhile, while the stew is simmering, sauté the seasoned halibut and scallops in a frying pan separately. Cooking the halibut until lightly done and scallops seared on both sides. Set aside.

When the stew is done simmering, remove and discard the thyme sprigs and stir in the butter. Add the clams and bring the stew back to a simmer. Cover and cook for about 6 minutes, until the clams have mostly opened. Gently stir in the shrimp and bring the stew back to a simmer; cover and cook until the shrimp are just cooked through and the clams are completely opened, about 5 minutes. Discard any unopened clams. Add the sautéd halibut and scallops and simmer for another 2-3 minutes. Taste the stew and adjust seasoning, if necessary. Serve garnished with parsley and artisan bread.

KEEPING CAMPUS CULTURE THRIVING ONLINE

W

hen COVID-19 sent classes online last spring and turned the GWC campus into a virtual ghost town, with only nursing, criminal justice, and automotive students eventually returning in the fall for in-person instruction, student leaders were faced with a challenge: “It’s been challenging for students to want to stay engaged because they’re taking classes and tests on Zoom, and maybe they’re still working during the pandemic,” says Frank Cirioni, director of Campus Life at GWC. “Our student leaders focused on engaging students virtually and asking themselves, ‘How do you build community online?’

“These students are really great,” Cirioni adds. “They’ve been working their tails off all semester to try to create some semblance of community.”

Welcoming new students In June 2020, Makeda Telahun, a second-year student at GWC who plans to transfer this fall to a fouryear university to study criminology, became vice president of college life.

“I plan events and activities to enrich the lives of students here at Golden West College,” she explains. “I just wanted to be in an environment where I could connect with more people, and I thought it would be a great time to start doing this.”

Like many students, Telahun found the adjustment to online learning difficult.

“It’s very different,” she says.

That didn’t stop her from planning activities for GWC students who now are studying and interacting 12 | GWC Magazine

mostly online.

One of Telahun’s first big endeavors was planning for the traditional Welcoming Week Carnival for incoming fall semester students, which was held in August 2020.

Telahun assembled gift boxes for 50-some new students that included snacks like cotton candy and popcorn and toy items such as a teddy bear keychain. The gift bags were available for pickup on campus.

In October 2020, Telahun organized a pumpkin carving contest. Students picked up the kits at GWC and carved away at home, sharing photos of their creations on the GWC app.

“I would really encourage students to come to our virtual events and check them out because they can be pretty fun,” she says. “It may seem a little weird to go to an online event, but they can be really enriching.”

A communications major, Blake is taking his last required communications class this spring and hopes to transfer to a four-year college within the next three years after taking a few more electives at GWC.

Many events during the pandemic were listed in Student Services Connection, a new newsletter put out by the GWC Student Services team.

His goal is to get into some type of advocacy work for the disabled.

“We may not be meeting on campus right now, but that doesn’t mean we’ve stopped meeting the needs of our students,” read the message from Claudia Lee, Vice President of Student Services, in the inaugural issue last August.

Listed in that first issue were such events as weekly GWC Community Building Circles and a seasonone watch party of “Star Wars: The Mandalorian.”

For incoming students in Spring 2021, Telahun assembled more gift bags.

“During this time when we’re all away,” she says, “it can be difficult to really feel like we have a campus. So it’s very important to create a sense of community around the college. If I can create an event that’s fun and that allows students to really enjoy themselves and to talk with other students and to get some sense of Golden West College’s identity, I think that’s a great thing.”

Telahun, like most students, can’t wait for in-person classes to resume. She says she’s always had an interest in student government and is glad she had the chance to get involved at GWC before she moves on.

A culture of connection For Matt Blake, the COVID-19 pandemic has made him feel more connected to the campus.

Because he’s disabled, getting to and around GWC and back home again poses challenges. Blake can’t drive, and public transportation in Southern California isn’t ideal.

Blake, who has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair, started at GWC out of high school in 2011. Because of his circumstances, he can only take one class per semester.

At GWC, Blake has become a valued advocate for the disabled.

“The unique thing about COVID is before the pandemic began, it was hard for me to join clubs and be part of the campus,” he says. “I had to make travel arrangements, make sure somebody was able to pick me up and make sure I could get back and forth from point A to point B. “After they started moving things online, I found that opened doors for me to be more social."

Blake was able to join the honor society, Alpha Gamma Sigma. And he was offered an at-large position in student government, ASGWC. “They wanted the perspective of a disabled student to help address issues of diversity on campus,” Blake says.

The ASGWC appointed Blake to a district-wide cultural diversity committee to help with a survey being conducted on addressing diversity.

HOW DO WE KEEP AS MANY STUDENTS AS POSSIBLE ENGAGED WITH CAMPUS LIFE AND FEELING A SENSE OF COMMUNITY AT A TIME WHEN THEY’RE SPENDING MOST OF THEIR TIME STUCK AT HOME? “I was on the committee and they loved me because they’ve never really had a disabled student on the committee before,” Blake says. “I was able to provide them with a perspective from a disabled student’s point of view to help address issues.”

For example, Blake stressed the importance of instructors becoming more supportive of — and simply used to — disabled students.

“Often when I go into a classroom, the instructor has absolutely no idea what to do with me,” Blake says.

Blake also lobbied the district to allow students — not just disabled students — to be able to withdraw during the fall 2020 semester without it affecting their transcripts. The district came up with a policy that allowed for excused withdrawals.

because people were having a difficult time,” Blake says.

CONCURRENT ENROLLMENT

CREDIT GOES TO THESE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS CONCURRENT ENROLLMENT PROVIDES EARLY OPPORTUNITY TO EARN COLLEGE CREDITS While she was registering for classes at Fountain Valley High School, Jolynna Dang noticed a table staffed by GWC personnel.

She walked up and was handed a flyer that described concurrent enrollment and dual enrollment, two GWC programs that allow high school students to earn college credits during their freshman through senior years.

Jolynna, who has been involved in student government since middle school, was blown away.

“I thought, ‘Why not take some college classes?’” she recalls.

In the Fall 2019 semester, Jolynna took a GWC business course on finding and knowing your customer, and in the Spring 2020 semester before she graduated, she took three college-level classes: one on starting a business, another on marketing and social media for entrepreneurs, and College 100, which teaches high school students time-management and other skills they will need in college.

All those credits not only allowed Jolynna to run for student council before she began her time at GWC in Fall 2020 (she was elected ASGWC vice president of financial affairs), but they also put her in excellent position to transfer to a four-year university in Fall 2021 after only one year at GWC. “I honestly regret not knowing about this sooner because I would have taken so many more classes,” Jolynna says of concurrent and dual enrollment. Based on her experience, she convinced two of her younger siblings to take concurrent enrollment classes last summer and fall.

“It’s amazing,” Jolynna says of the programs. “I don’t think a lot of high school students know about them. If they did, they would take advantage of them.”

Concurrent enrollment is similar to dual enrollment in that both programs allow high school students to take GWC classes.

Dual enrollment is a more formal partnership between GWC and two school districts: Huntington Beach Union High School District and Garden Grove Unified. Completely free to the student, GWC’s dual enrollment program offers a limited number of courses that, pre-COVID, sent GWC instructors to high schools to teach (the classes now are online). For example, there’s a very structured, four-year sequence of dual enrollment classes offered at Los Amigos High School in Fountain Valley.

Students from any public high school can sign up for concurrent enrollment and take any GWC classes they want, explains Matt Valerius, director of Guided Pathways & Dual Enrollment at Golden West College.

“All the student needs to do is get permission from his or her parents and school to take regular college classes with other college-aged students,” he explains.

Explosive growth The concurrent enrollment program at GWC predates the dual enrollment program, which began in 2017. But only recently has the number of high school students participating in concurrent enrollment exploded, Valerius says.

“It’s easily tripled over the last two years to about 300 students per semester,” he says.

There are about 1,000 dual enrollment students per semester at GWC, Valerius says.

“We have a lot of students that actually do both,” he adds.

fornia school, Valerius notes. This accomplishment is equivalent to completing two years of college while still in high school.

“She started doing concurrent enrollment completely on her own,” he explains. “She took one to two concurrent enrollment classes per semester.”

In addition to public high schools, a handful of charter schools — one as far away as Temecula — have reached out to GWC to get their students involved in the concurrent enrollment program.

“We do concurrent enrollment with some 40 to 50 charter school students per semester and continue to work with charter schools to promote concurrent enrollment,” Valerius says.

Jolynna plans to major in business administration at a four-year university — UC Irvine is one of her top choices — and pursue a career as a Student Affairs administrator at a college.

“I used to be a shy student,” she says, “but getting involved in student government changed all of that.”

Jolynna recommends that all GWC students become more involved in campus events.

As for high school students, she can’t praise enough the benefits of GWC’s concurrent enrollment program.

“In retrospect,” she says, “I wish I would have taken more GWC classes while in high school.”

Saving time and money Titania Le recently was recognized by the California Coalition of Early & Middle Colleges (CCEMC) for the great start she’s gotten in college while in high school.

Titania, a senior at La Quinta High School in Westminster, recently took GWC’s “College 100” class and was recognized on CCEMC’s website.

Her recognition was well earned. Titania always has been motivated.

“What drives me the most is fear of debt,” she says. “I feel that as long as I complete some college credits while in high school, that opens up a lot of opportunities for me in the future. I want to graduate from college as soon as possible and without any debt or as little debt as possible. That’s a huge driving force for me.”

“Receiving credits for actual college is much more within reach than earning them through an AP class,” Titania says. “I highly recommend other students to take this route.”

Titania was introduced to GWC’s dual enrollment program her junior year, when she took a human anatomy class.

In GWC’s concurrent enrollment program, she has studied introduction to art, Western philosophy and introduction to psychology, and currently she is taking a financial accounting class as well as a general geology course.

Titania’s sister, Trish, a freshman at La Quinta High, is taking an introduction to art class this semester through GWC’s concurrent enrollment program.

Titania plans to enroll at a four-year university in Fall 2022 after attending one year of community college. Her goal is a master’s degree in business and a career having to do with environmental sustainability.

“I’ve been telling my high school friends, ‘Man, you should take GWC’s concurrent enrollment classes,’” Titania says. “They will save you so much time and money.”

Acting Academy for Kids

is open!

SUMMER PERFORMING ARTS CAMPS THAT ARE SAFE, FUN, AND AN ALL AROUND WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE FOR KIDS IN ORANGE COUNTY! On March 11, 2020, students and staff at Acting Academy for Kids (AA4K) had just put their finishing touches on sets, props, costumes, and most importantly, the students’ performances with their final dress rehearsal when the announcement to close all operations from the Governor was announced. Just two days later, family and friends who had purchased tickets to see their stars shine in Disney’s The Little Mermaid would be cancelled. Needless to say, this was a devastating blow for everyone who poured so much love, energy and resources into a magical musical experience.

As everyone reading this knows, the world came crashing to a halt and everyone’s lives would forever change. AA4K immediately focused its energies on how to safely

continue to impact the youth during a global pandemic.

Co-Founders Stephen and Maggie Zygo who both hold Masters in Education and have two little guys of their own, Julian (6) and Jesse (5), knew they had to pivot and utilize their creative arts team to recreate musical theater with safety as their number one priority. That is when two designs were implemented: Virtual Musical Theater and Covid-Safe In-Person Musical Theater.

As the pandemic kept everyone home, AA4K spent countless hours researching and experimenting with different technologies to create a virtual arts solution. They tapped into the Broadway arts community as Stephen’s older brother is an 8-time TONY award-winning actor, and after

numerous trial and error attempts, the AA4K team did it! They discovered a fun and successful model to keep kids active in the performing arts while at home. After producing Annie virtually, the AA4K team created a summer camp edition that spanned the globe. Kids all around America partipated as well as kids in other countries. “We even had one kid from China, who got up at 4 a.m. to attend,” said Zygo. “The virtual crew became friends on TikTok, Instagram, and other social media. They created all kinds of fun stuff together — and they all met at our camps.” Zygo continued, “In the process, we became a leader in virtual theater production. Other groups were able to glean information and inspiration from us. We all were just trying to figure out how to make it work, and fortunately, our

This year’s performances will include Evil Descendants 2 Camp, Beauty and the Beast Camp, Harry Potter Camp, and several others. GRANT AIMS TO BOOST RANKS OF HISPANIC/LATINX STUDENTS IN STEM

$5-MILLION AWARD FROM U.S. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION IS A FIRST FOR GWC 18 | GWC Magazine

The U.S. Department of Education has awarded a $5-million Title V grant to help GWC boost the ranks of Hispanic and LatinX students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) courses.

opportunities and improve the academic attainment of all students, although it will be focused on Hispanic students in particular.

Hicks says Hispanic/LatinX student over the last few years but still is below what it should be. A key objective of the grant is to increase the current percentage of GWC’s STEM students who are Hispanic (26%) to match the overall Hispanic population at GWC (33%).

THE GRANT PROVIDES FUNDING TO EXPAND EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES AND IMPROVE THE ACADEMIC ATTAINMENT OF ALL STUDENTS “This grant, through our Gateway to STEM program, is important because the number of Hispanic and LatinX students who currently are participating in STEM is not at the campus average, and we know that this is an important endeavor to get these students into high-paying jobs and great careers,” Hicks says.

“And with our fabulous new Math and Sciences building and STEM center, coupled with our outstanding faculty, we’re really positioned to be very successful at increasing their access as

well as their success in STEM programs,” he adds.

The grant was awarded to less than 40 Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) across the country, says GWC President Tim McGrath.

“GWC has a proud history as a designated Hispanic Serving Institution,” McGrath says.

“We have established realistic, thoughtfully-designed strategies to increase student access, success and transfer in STEM by providing evidence-based

services and support; creating a culture of inquiry; and increasing enrollment in STEM education and career pathways,” says Kay Nguyen, Ed.D, Dean of Research, Planning, and Effectiveness.

Other objectives of the grant include increasing the Hispanic/LatinX student success rate in STEM by 5-10% based on current STEM discipline baselines and increasing the Hispanic/LatinX student transfer rate to four-year institutions from 27% to match GWC’s overall Hispanic population of 33%.

Hicks says the grant also will allow GWC to hire part-time tutors and transfer counselors whose jobs will be to advise students how to be best prepared to transfer to a four-year school.

The grant also will allow GWC to fund a full-time STEM and grant director, Hicks says.

GWC submitted its application for the Title V grant in March 2020 and learned it was a recipient in October 2020.

“We achieved a 100-percent score on our grant application,” Hicks notes.

PROMISE FULFILLED

CALIFORNIA COMMUNITY COLLEGES (CCC) CHANCELLOR OAKLEY IS A PROUD GWC GRADUATE Eloy Ortiz Oakley’s life changed when he stepped onto the Golden West College campus almost 30 years ago. He was a U.S. Army veteran seeking to improve his young family’s life. Growing up, no one in his family had attended college before, so he was on his own. He picked up a GWC class schedule and enrolled.

Oakley was interested in the sciences, particularly chemistry. He was good at it. In fact, his full-time job involved handling hazardous materials and waste. His chemistry lab coordinator soon recognized Oakley’s skills and hired him as a consultant to help write the department’s hazardous waste procedure manual.

Oakley continued doing projects for GWC while attending classes. Word got out, and soon he was working with Orange Coast College and the Coast Community College District, too. Within a year, he was hired onto the GWC adjunct faculty to teach in and eventually coordinate the environmental technology certificate program.

Meanwhile, Oakley’s counselor was helping him plan his next academic step.

“My counselor really helped me get a sense of what I needed to do to transfer to the University of California,” Oakley said.

“Most of what I wound up doing, I did not realize I could do when I started at GWC.” After transferring to the University of California, Irvine, Oakley continued working at the district while completing his undergraduate and graduate studies. He received a bachelor’s degree in environmental analysis and design, immediately followed with a master’s degree in business administration.

Two years later, Oakley returned to school, this time as vice president of college services at Oxnard Community College. He transitioned to the Long Beach Community College District as vice president of administrative services a year later. In 2007, he became superintendent and president.

Changing Expectations What Oakley remembers most about GWC are the people. He feels very lucky to have met caring faculty and staff who helped him navigate the system. He says many of them continue to mentor him today.

But luck is not enough. At Long Beach Community College District, Oakley set about creating a better system for historically underrepresented students like himself. Drawing directly from his experience at GWC, he co-developed the Long Beach College Promise.

Formed in 2008, this agreement between the Long Beach Unified School District, Long Beach City College (LBCC), California State University Long Beach (CSULB) and City of Long Beach provides a clear, structured pathway to move high school students on to community college or a four-year university.

It begins early with tours of LBCC and CSULB campuses during elementary school to create a culture of college expectation and readiness.

In 2015, the Long Beach College Promise won a $5 million award from the state of California for demonstrating innovation in higher education. That year it also drew national attention and was one of the initiatives used by former President Obama to develop the America’s College Promise proposal.

In 2016, Oakley became chancellor of the California Community Colleges. He is a strong supporter of the Vision For Success, a 2017 strategic plan providing the framework to improve student outcomes, close achievement gaps, and help students stay on the community college or four-year university path until completion.

“I could not be where I am today, and my family could not be enjoying the benefits that they do, without my experience at GWC,” he said. “That is something that will always be part of my life, and inform how I approach and value the community college experience.”

“I hope to be able to show that I am someone worth investing in,” he wrote.

The student finished his last year at Golden West College and transferred to a four-year university where he’s pursuing a major in criminal justice.

“I know you are sacrificing your resources toward someone you don’t know so that they may have a future,” he wrote.

“I won’t waste the opportunity you have given me.”

A letter like this is why many GWC alumni, staff, faculty, community leaders, and good-hearted people in general join the organization that’s responsible for this student’s scholarship and the scholarships of countless other students over the years: The Patrons, an ancillary support group to the GWC Foundation that is approaching nearly 50 years of service.

“Thank you for what you have done,” the

student wrote. “I promise that this letter has not done justice to the gratitude I feel.”

The main objective of the all-volunteer organization is to raise funds for student scholarships through its popular Chefs for Scholarships event each fall, a kind of “Taste of Huntington Beach” in which 25 or so restaurants participate.

The Patrons also volunteer countless hours each year in support of other events such as the Gala, Art Gallery, Scholarships & Awards, and Graduation ceremonies.

To date, The Patrons has collectively raised close to a half million dollars for GWC students, with about $325,000 of that coming from Chefs for Scholarships, says Jacki Wirta, president of The Patrons since 2014.

Despite a year unlike any other in 2020, The Patrons continued to deliver, Wirta says.

Although it had to cancel its Chefs for Scholarships event, which typically raises around $30,000, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, The Patrons were able to pivot and hold a very successful drive-in movie night last fall, raising close to $20,000 as participants watched “Elf” from

“They’re our angels,” Bruce Berman, executive director of the GWC Foundation, says of The Patrons.

Under the leadership of Wirta, membership in the organization has grown to 70 members — double the size six years ago.

“Something as little as $250 can be the difference between a student staying in school and having to drop out,” Wirta says. “I think that’s one of the reasons The Patrons has gotten so many new members. They see what we do and say, ‘I want to be a part of that group.’”

A little goes a long way Another recipient of a scholarship from The Patrons — gifts range in value from $500 to $1,500 — in May 2020 says the money really made a difference.

“This will help me go a long way,” she wrote in a thank-you note. “I value every little bit of my education. I will make sure every dollar of this donation goes into improving myself with a chance to succeed in school.”

The student is completing her education at GWC with plans to transfer to a California state university or Chapman University.

with more than 30 typically showing up at a monthly hot buffet luncheon to hear speakers and to talk business.

When Wirta and her husband, Weikko, moved out to California 10 years ago from Connecticut, The Patrons was the very first organization she got involved in. Weikko Wirta is Southland Operations and Maintenance manager and site leader at AES Huntington Beach.

“We’ve worked really hard to grow our membership and to reach out to the community,” says Wirta, who says one of the main draws is annual dues of only $25 a year, with no required meetings.

“It’s a great community group,” Jacki Wirta says.

“People like what we do,” Wirta says.

“And they like the fact that we’re a completely volunteer organization.”

About six years ago, The Patrons were down to about 35 members — still very active, but smaller than normal. Now the organization is up to 70 members,

Says Wirta of that and other messages of thanks from scholarship recipients: “It makes us feel good. A lot of them also tell us they hope to one day be able to give back to their community like we’ve given to them. They’re so appreciative.

I think that’s one of the reasons we’ve gotten so many new members in recent years. They see that and they see what we do, and they say, ‘I want to be a part of that group.’”

STEADFAST SUPPORT

ONCE A GWC STUDENT, STEVE OLMSTED NOW CHAIRS THE GWC FOUNDATION BOARD Steve Olmsted, of Olmsted & Associates Accountancy Corporation, was already familiar with Golden West College when a friend reached out to him about getting involved with the Foundation’s board of directors. Years ago, he’d taken classes there, himself. But there was also a deeper family connection.

His mother-in-law had received her nursing degree at GWC decades earlier. She’d been widowed and left with five children to raise.

Being able to complete her nursing degree led to a job at Hoag Hospital, and that became the basis for supporting her family.

Olmsted knew first-hand how GWC changes lives. He decided to look into the Foundation board opportunity.

“I liked the board makeup, the way they conducted business, and the respect they had for members’ time and resources,” Olmsted said. He agreed to serve as treasurer, envisioning a three-year commitment.

That was 18 years ago.

Since then, Olmsted has generously given of his professional expertise and family resources to support GWC. He currently serves as the board chair.

Thanks to his guidance, our Foundation is stronger and more sustainable for the years ahead.

Better stewardship As board treasurer, Olmsted immediately zeroed in on the Foundation’s overall financial picture. At the time, the Foundation’s primary emphasis was special events. But Olmsted knew how demanding those could be for a small staff with limited resources. He shifted the focus to money management.

An outside firm was handling the Foundation’s investment portfolio. Olmsted thought the $45,000 the Foundation was paying in annual

fees could be far better used to support students and college programs.

He created a volunteer sub-committee of investment advisers and brokers to review the Foundation’s investment strategy. With their guidance and recommendations, the Foundation was able to bring that function back in house and invest the funds themselves.

Not only did they save on the annual fees, but the investments performed better. The Foundation’s net worth doubled within six years, even while giving away $700,000 annually in scholarships, emergency student grants and program support.

“We are mindful of the money we have to work with,” Olmsted said. “Of the $10 million under management, 95% is endowed. Our goal is to build up unrestricted funds, which will give us more flexibility.”

Some of those unrestricted funds recently went to the COVID-19 campaign earlier this spring that provided $250 emergency relief grants to 160 students.

Family Endeavor Bernie Olmsted, whose mother earned that lifechanging nursing degree at GWC so many years ago, has joined her husband’s efforts by chairing the Foundation’s signature event. All proceeds go to support unrestricted funds.

And there’s another event the Olmsteds particularly look forward to every year — the spring scholarship assembly. They personally contribute unrestricted funds each year to support scholarships and programs. Meeting the recipients is highly rewarding and reaffirms their commitment to GWC. “Some are the first in the family to go college,” Steve Olmsted said. “Or we’ll meet a 60-yearold who is changing professions and these resources are critical. And it is like, ‘Wow, this is why we’re doing it.’” goldenwestcollege.edu

The best evenings start with a bonfire!

A visit to Huntington Beach isn’t complete without a traditional beach bonfire. Three out of five of beaches house fire pits: Huntington City Beach, Huntington State Beach, and Bolsa Chica State Beach. And four of Huntington Beach's oceanfront resorts offer fire pits with s'mores and cocktails.

More than 500 fire rings at all three beaches combined are available for free on a first-come, first-served basis. Huntington City Beach—home of the Huntington Beach Pier—features over 100 concrete fire rings from south of First Street to Beach Boulevard, and is open daily 5 am to 10 pm. Huntington State Beach to the south and Bolsa Chica State Beach to the north both boast

Live like a local and hit Surf City Nights, downtown’s Tuesday night community street fair and farmers' market. From 5 pm to 9 pm, the first three blocks of Main Street are closed to traffic and transform into bustling lanes filled with local artisans, fresh produce, live music, kids games, and more. Local shops and eateries open their doors extra wide for the community on this night, offering sidewalk sales and exclusive deals. Locals bike and walk here every week to buy groceries and hang out.

At the certified farmers' market, find locally grown fruits and vegetables, fresh cut flowers, local honey, gourmet salt, olive oils and vinegars, baked goods, and dried fruit and nuts. Look for the “Apple Guy,” or Phillip Shin of Ha’s Apple Farm, who carves incredible and edible artworks out of his apples and hands them out as

delicious samples. It’s quite a show, and he even takes requests.

At merchant tents, peruse original artworks, glass and ceramics, handmade candles, clothing and couture, handcrafted wood goods, and other unique gifts and collectibles. Food trucks also join in on the fun, purveying street fares like burritos, empanadas, and burgers. The good energy and cheer is nearly electric during this community celebration, and simply watching the people walking by is part of the experience. All of this to the tune of local musicians belting it out under the stars.

Constructed in 1898 for the Newland Family and their 10 children, the Newland House is now the oldest and best-kept residence in Huntington Beach. The museum offers an authentic glimpse into a time when there was a lot less traffic in California. The adjacent Newland Barn features modern renovations and rentable space for special occasions.

The Newland ranch contained vegetable gardens, orchards, a variety of farm animals, and pet peacocks; it covered more than 500 acres of land. Celery and sugar beets were the main products of the ranch's gardens, though other crops were also grown.

The outbuildings contained a large barn, stables, corrals and bunkhouses for ranch hands. During the early years, water was obtained from a natural spring near the present day intersection

of Adams Avenue and Beach Boulevard. William Newland later developed a water well closer to the Newland House and constructed a water tower.[6] The water tower was reproduced in the 21st Century by the Huntington Beach Historical Society in the back yard of the Newland House. Another feature of the site was the present of an ancient Native American settlement, from which many artifacts were retrieved from.

Tours and upkeep of the Newland House Museum are provided by the Huntington Beach Historical Society.

A RESILIENT FORCE

VETERANS RESOURCE CENTER CONTINUES TO EXPAND SERVICES AND HELP STUDENTS DESPITE CHALLENGES POSED BY PANDEMIC One student calls it her “safe space.”

Another calls it his “onestop-shop” for personal and academic growth.

And another student says it provided him moral support and encouragement that ultimately helped him transfer to, and graduate from, a four-year university.

All three are talking about the Veterans Resource Center (VRC), which despite the COVID-19 pandemic has been able to continue providing service to some 300 GWC students and military veterans each academic year.

The mission of the VRC is to help veterans transition to civilian and college life by providing holistic resources and services from onboarding all the way to graduation and transfer to four-year universities.

First established in 2010, the VRC moved to the new Student Services Center (SSC) in April 2018, making it an even more valuable hub for this unique community of students. The state-ofthe-art space includes a lounge, break area, two private offices, a computer lab and a study room.

“I was initially intimidated about returning to school because I was older

than most of the other students in my classes,” says Navy veteran Adrienne Karnoski, who calls the VRC her safe space while attending GWC. “However, the VRC was a place I could hang out between classes with the other veterans and staff. It helped me remember I wasn’t alone and that I had a team supporting me.”

That team is led by Dr. Susana Castellanos-Gaona, manager of the VRC and Student Equity and Achievement Program.

Castellanos-Gaona comes to the role with invaluable experience as a spouse of a military veteran.

“As a military wife,” says CastellanosGaona, “I know first-hand how overwhelming it can become while trying to navigate all the VA benefits that are available for our military members. When I first became the manager of this center, I quickly noticed that our own students could benefit from having a staff member that has expert knowledge in all the programs available to fund their education. These benefits have a time limit, and it takes careful planning in order to maximize them.”

Castellanos-Gaona hired David Negreros, USMC, BGS, as the VRC’s veteran education benefits specialist.

An average of 250 students utilize their VA benefits to fund their education at GWC. “My vision was that David Negreros, with his knowledge, could help students financially plan their education here at GWC and also have enough money left in their benefits to fund the university portion of their four-year degree,” Castellanos-Gaona says.

“We’re proud that David can provide one-to-one appointments to customize a financial plan for each student.”

Continued growth Since relocating to the Student Services Center, the VRC has grown in other ways: • The center has brought on board a full-time VRC specialist, Christie Vega, M.S., who assists in the coordination of day-to-day services in the center.

• The center also has implemented veteran-specific tutoring in the area of mathematics and English, providing one-to-one and group tutoring as well as workshops on time management and how to be a successful student.

• The VRC has hired its own veterans as tutors, including Nick Cardiel, who has successfully transferred to a four-year university to continue with his academic goals.

• The VRC also has expanded its partnership with US Vets Outside the Wire to include case management services on top of emotional support services through counseling.

Help provided Cristian Cabrera, a Marines veteran, realized he needed some help after enrolling at GWC. “The VRC was there for me,” he says.

“They gave me moral support and encouragement. They provided a clear roadmap to all the resources available to me. They connected me to on- and off-campus resources, like the VA hospital. Thanks to the staff at the VRC, I transferred to a four-year university and completed my undergraduate degree.”

Since 2018, the VRC also has strengthened its partnership with the Assistance League of Huntington Beach, which supports GWC students with snacks and healthy grab-and-go items and most recently provided $45,000 worth of scholarships directly to the students.

“Using the Veterans Resource Center (VRC) at Golden West College has been a huge asset in my personal development and academic success,” says Army Veteran Nick Cardiel. “Hav

ing a dedicated space for veterans like myself helped me ease into my new college life.”

Cardiel says Castellanos-Gaona and VRC specialist Christie Vega have been particularly helpful.

“Learning what they do for student veterans every day is the reason why I kept showing up at the VRC,” Cardiel says. “No matter what the situation was, Christie always found a way to help me and others by utilizing resources, including academic counselors, personal counselors and case manager Michelle Fuentes.

“I used the VRC as a one-stop-shop for my growth,” continues Cardiel, who now works for the VRC as an English tutor. “As a student, I did not have to pay to use the printer. They also have an abundance of school supplies.

When taking statistics, I borrowed a TI-89 graphing calculator from the VRC and took advantage of all the snacks, helping me save some money and stay fueled.

“Christie also referred me to our school’s Career Center where I was able to refine my resume. The VRC is one of those hidden gems that keeps a student veteran grounded when academics, work, and our personal lives become overwhelming.”

A quick pivot

When the pandemic hit, the VRC team had to quickly transition all services to alternative modalities. Today, the VRC continues to serve students remotely Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

“We continue to provide our students with all the perks that they can receive when our campus was open; including school supplies, Chromebook and calculator loans, etc.,” says Castellanos-Gaona. “We continue to host our new student orientations, Veteran’s Day celebration, and Vet Net Ally programs remotely.”

campus because of the pandemic.

“We traditionally host a community event that includes a Three-Gun Volley, military band, and flag salute,” she says. “We honor our own student veterans as well as community veterans from past generations with a military coin and present the honors earned while they served in the military. We end the day with a reception featuring a female band singing Golden-Era military music.”

The VRC will continue to educate the campus community about the unique experiences of GWC’s veteran and military connected students, CastellanosGaona says.

“Our team understands that the students we serve have different experiences outside of academics,” she says.

“Therefore, we take the time to deeply explore each student’s unique situation and ensure that we connect them with the necessary resources and services to help them succeed with their goals here at GWC.” SPRING 2021 | 37

DEPUTY LARA ... PROFESSIONAL, DEDICATED, LOYAL, FAIR, AND A MAN WHO LOVES AND APPRECIATES HIS JOB

It’s been a long and winding road for Deputy Juan Lara from his childhood in San Jose to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department (OCSD) 2021 San Clemente Deputy of the Year.

Deputy Lara has navigated the career turns along that winding road which continues to this day as he crosses the Ortega Highway from his home in Lake Elsinore to a midnight — ‘where the action is’ — shift, as a Deputy and Field Training Officer for the City of San Clemente.

I recently had the privilege to interview Deputy Lara to find out what is ‘behind his badge.’ As a highly trained and educated Sheriff’s deputy and a devoted family man, I found him to be exactly what a local city looks for in a local law enforcement officer — professional, dedicated, loyal, fair, and someone who loves and appreciates his job.

The Winding Road

The winding road began in Anaheim where he graduated from Katella High School and competed in water polo and swimming for four years. In fact, Deputy Lara was the first generation of his family, who immigrated from Mexico, to graduate from high school and college. While attending and working towards his Associate Degree in Criminal Justice from Santa Ana College he worked as a security 40 | S Magazine

guard to pay for tuition. That was his initial “foot in the door,” and many more would open up over the years.

That next door opened when he was accepted into the City of Orange Police Department’s Cadet Program where he got his “feet wet and it looked exciting and I got to watch cops, do ride alongs, and I was hooked from the minute I got into a patrol car!” After a stint in Parking Enforcement and Dispatch, he realized that these positions were great stepping stones that he would use later in his role as a Field Training Officer and imparting his knowledge to deputies in training. The winding road would continue as he also joined the Laguna Police Department, while working full-time with Orange PD, and worked beach patrol as well as jailer on weekends. “I loved being on that beach”.

Tough duty as he waited for that next opportunity to rise which turned out to be acceptance to the OC Sheriff’s Department Academy in 2012 and sworn in as a deputy and a first assignment in the jail facility where he mastered ‘verbal judo’ in learning how to handle people and altercations.

Those assignments turned out to be a “blessing in disguise and paved my way to being a good patrol officer and got me to where I am today.” Well said and a nice segue to my next query as

to how old he was when he first knew he wanted to be in law enforcement.

He immediately thought of pictures of himself as a five year-old boy standing with his Uncle Victor in front of a San Jose police vehicle. “I grew up with the idea I wanted to be in law enforcement even though I had no family in that field. I had an admiration for the profession as a young boy, especially for the San Jose police department — plus, it kept me out of trouble. Somebody along the way told me you have to live a certain way; you can’t sway at all.” It worked.

Although he didn’t picture himself being assigned to San Clemente, he was encouraged to apply by his supervisor in the Field Training Bureau. The City had a “reputation for being a great city to train in as it was one of the busiest contract cities. I would be bored anywhere else and it is such a good community. My favorite position so far

in my career is as a deputy patrol officer in San Clemente — I love it here.”

A typical night shift

Deputy Lara currently reports to the Aliso Viejo substation. “I drive to the substation and make my way to the City, and coffee in the North End is the first stop. Load up, pick calls up and clear the board as I make my way to my 12 hour shift in my assigned area in South San Clemente. The nights can be busy. Once I arrive I find people to talk to — I am a snoop and I love getting into things and keep my eye out for anything out of the ordinary. Proactive traffic stops, park, and watch traffic and observe. You have to know what looks out of the norm and react.” Folks, this is what keeps a city safe at night.

I see trends change and now it is synthetic drugs that affect lives.”

experience — “we constantly put ourselves in danger. Lately, what we have seen is that there are more guns out there. In fact, in the last 18 months I have personally taken 8 guns off the streets through traffic stops. I do a lot of ‘snooping’ around and when I see signs of armed drivers I know that this is a dangerous situation I’ve put myself into.” As an example, earlier this year, he pulled over a suspicious driver who had an ammunition magazine in his center console. When, asked if he had a gun in his car he responded with “yeah, under my seat.” As Deputy Lara said, “You don’t know what you got till you ask the right questions!”

Deputy Lara was recently selected as Orange County’s Deputy of the Year in San Clemente. As always the Exchange Club hosted the event which was socially distanced, but he was able to have his wife and chil-

dren attend this momentous event.

“It was quite an honor to be selected.

It is something I always wanted as I wanted to prove myself and my mentors encouraged me. I love being proactive and want to be a deputy who leads by example. I demand a lot of my trainees and myself.”

The ‘Snoop’

“Definitely want an investigator position. I am a snoop and like to get my nose into things. I make it my business to be in your business! I have been selected into the TRIP (Targeting Reduction Investigation and Prevention) position where I will work undercover, driving around the city in an unmarked car, follow up on leads, gather experience and then take the investigator’s test.”

be dealing with them at their worst moment, but I can relate to them. I am not out to get people, it is all about fair and equal justice.”

Off duty

Deputy Lara spends his off time with “my lovely wife Dulce — happy wife, happy life!” and his two children, Joshua, 8, who is a baseball player, and Emily, 5, who is a ballet dancer.

“Their interests are my interests and I also enjoy taking care of fish and aquariums.”

Closing

Deputy Lara is on a waypoint in his career as a law enforcement officer.

His winding road is just beginning and we are lucky to have a deputy of his caliber serving our community. I look forward to seeing his rise in the Orange County Sheriffs Department.

CHASES HIS OLYMPIC DREAM Three summers ago, Dusty Henricksen worked at San Clemente's own So Cal Surf Shop, earning some extra money while staying with his grandparents, Jimmy and Wendy Smith, who live in the city. Today at age 18, he is one of the most heralded young snowboarder in the world, having just placed second in the slopestyle event amongst 32 top pro snowboarders gathered for the 2020 Burton U.S. Open in Vail, Colorado.

In 2018 Henricksen, now residing with his family in Mammoth Lakes, was named to the U.S. Rookie Olympic Snowboarding Team, training at the Olympic facility in Park City, Utah. His grandparents, Rick and Julie who own Romans Construction in Big Bear, saw early in Dusty's career, his potential to go far in snowboarding and helped to support Dusty's dream. Henricksen also worked summers and made (along with his Grandma Wendy) duct tape wallets to raise money for his travels.

Henricksen has competed in many different snowboarding disciplines, but he prefers to compete in slopestyle, which is a downhill course combining varying terrains, rails, and jumps from which riders can perform spins and other mid-air tricks.

A rookie amongst more seasoned Olympic pros, Henricksen was not the least intimidated, putting together a super-clean run and pulling off an “NBD” (Never Before Done) trick at a slopestyle event for his finale — a backside quad cork 1800 (which is four flips and five spins).

He landed it without a hitch, and at the bottom of the hill, he was mobbed by his fellow competitors congratulating him as he moved from 4th place to the second spot. One announcer said he “shocked the world,” at the Burton U.S. Open. Henricksen also received the Burton Riders Choice Award and named the U.S. Open Rookie of the Year for 2020. Oh yeah, he also tied a bow around a spectacular season with a firstplace finish at the Rev Tour slopestyle event in Park City, Utah in late February 2020.

During the previous Winter 2020, Henricksen continued his winning streak on the world stage. In his first major event in January, he qualified 1st and placed 9th in slopestyle at the World Cup snowboarding event in Laax, Switzerland. Then, he followed it up a few days later by winning the slopestyle gold medal in the Youth Olympics in Lausanne, Switzerland. Upon returning to his home slope on Mammoth Mountain, Henricksen won his first World Cup event at the 2020 Land Rover Grand Prix.

Now in 2021, Dusty has racked up even more impressive accolades. If you watched the Winter X Games in Aspen in late January on ABC, you saw him score two gold medals in knucklehuck and slopestyle. He became the first American in 12 years to win a gold medal in slopestyle (the previous American gold medalist was the legendary Shaun White). Then Dusty was one of six top riders selected to create their own unique snowboarding video in the 2021 X Games Real Snow Video Competition. His video featured what is known as “street” as he performed tricks using his snowboard on rails, stairways and other common objects found on the street in any neighborhood. Henricksen garnered a 5th place in the World Championships in Aspen, then grabbed 7th against the best in the world in the 2021 World Cup Grand Prix. At the final World Cup of the season in Switzerland, he got another strong fifth place finish in slopestyle, setting himself up as the Number 2 ranked slopestyle competitor for a spot on the U.S. Team for the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing, China.

SNOWBOARD WORLD GETS DUSTED Henricksen said recently, “My goal at the start this year was just to survive the crazy season and land on my feet.” Mission more than accomplished! With the help of his sponsors Monster Energy Drink, Salomon Snowboards, Oakley, and U.S. Snowboarding Team, Henricksen exploded onto the world snowboarding scene.

The family moved to Mammoth several years later to take advantage of more advanced training and opportunities with the Mammoth Snowboard Team. The sacrifices made have certainly paid off, and he is wellsupported by his parents, both sets of grandparents and his extended family.

Dusty was born and raised in Big Bear, CA (where his grandparents Rick and Julie Romans live). His dad Marko was a snowboarding pioneer and one of the first snowboarding instructors in Southern California. Consequently, his parents taught Dusty to snowboard before he could even walk. By the age of three years, Dusty learned to ride at the local Bear Mountain Resorts and has been competing in USASA events since age five. He went on
