Barking & Dagenham has a high provision of primary and secondary education facilities across the borough, with two primary schools situated on Abbey green itself. However, the provision of tertiary education is less extensive, with no specialist provision for creative courses and making. As a result my project identifies this gap in education provision and provides a building housing studios, workshops and other educational spaces specifically for creative and making based courses including fine art, sculpture and jewellery design.

Coventry University currently has a campus in Barking & Dagenham and my scheme would be a space for them to provide creative degree courses, something not currently present in the borough. As my building functions as a market hall and community building as well, the use of studios and workshops would be open to the public but only at specific times, with Coventry University having priority during term time.

The setting for this programme is a much-forgotten aspect of East London; the Roding River and its environs in the borough of Barking and Dagenham. The Roding traverses a varied landscape where it directly interacts with the borough of Barking and Dagenham between the Harts Lane estate in the north of Abbey ward to the myriad of industrial sites along River Road. Barking suffers from many of the issues around identity, place and community cohesion seemingly so common in today’s world, but there is a real sense of optimism and drive within the local leadership and many reasons to view Barking and the Roding river as a place ripe with opportunity rather than beset with problems.

This proposal is comprised of two aspects; the first being a masterplan proposal extending from the end of East Street in the town centre, across Abbey Green and ending at town quay wharf; a unused site adjacent to the River Roding. The masterplan aims to revitalise the run down Abbey Green, returning it to its position as a hub for the town and its people. A new plaza at the end of East Street is proposed that will house independent retail and work sheds for local entrepreneurs and market stall owners, thus extending the success of the existing East Street market. The green is to be simplified and remodelled to create a direct route to the Roding. Space for allotments and sports pitches provide much needed activity to the green and allow it to appeal to the whole community.

Secondly, at the end of this masterplan route, will be a new market hall and educational building that sits on the edge of the river. This scheme also contains a public plaza in front, mirroring the beginning of the route and book ending Abbey green. This modest building is founded on principles of simplicity, openness and structural clarity that allow it express an accessibility to all members of the community whilst achieving a quality that the people of Barking can be proud of. Identifying a lack of creative enterprise opportunities in the borough and responding to the Creative Enterprise Zone report, the scheme houses riverside studio and workshop space to be used primarily by Coventry University as well as a new flexible market and community hall to house events, talks and provide a setting to celebrate the creative output of the borough.
