A Note from the Chairman

Writing an introductory note for our third Annual Review fills me with great joy as I look back not only on the 2017/18 season which it covers, but also the progress we’ve made over the past few years, as evidenced by the previous two editions of this report.

During 2017/18 we have made great strides in terms of one of our principal aims, which is to set up the right administrative and human resources structures within our Foundation to enable a solid sense of continuity within our operations. With the appointment of Mr Edward Zammit as Business Development Director in 2017, we have set things in motion on ensuring that our creative efforts take place within a solid business development framework. This bodes well for the future of the organization as it prepares to continue fulfilling its foundational purpose and mission.

Our creative team, led by Dr Toni Sant, now has the right tools to plan ahead and work on a tangible sense of development in the centre’s programme, whilst keeping true to the aims and objectives established at our inception when the organization was founded to handle the millennium project that was the St James Cavalier Centre for Creativity, to what has become Spazju Kreattiv, Malta’s national centre for creativity.

This Annual Review is designed to give an overview of our activities during the previous season, particularly from the perspective of Spazju Kreattiv as the central focus of our Foundation’s role as a public cultural organization working directly with Arts Council Malta and the Valletta 2018 Foundation.

May these Annual Reviews produced by our Spazju Kreattiv team continue to help us communicate a tangible record of the main activities of Fondazzjoni Kreattività over the years while serving as a way for us to continue assessing the fulfillment of our purpose and mission statement in a public-facing manner.

We are very grateful for the support of all the public cultural organizations, voluntary organizations, international collaborators, and various independent creative sector operators who continue to make the work of Fondazzjoni Kreattività both more valuable and meaningful. Spazju Kreattiv Context, Vision & Mission Spazju Kreattiv is a programme of creative arts and culture events that take place primarily across Malta and Gozo. The Spazju Kreattiv Programme is led by artistic director Toni Sant and developed by a team of programme, operations and technical staff working from St James Cavalier, Valletta. The Programme is composed through a combination of projects and events submitted through an open call and from others specifically created, commissioned or co-produced in line with Spazju Kreattiv’s strategic vision of focusing creativity around Identity, Diversity and Legacy.

Spazju Kreattiv was originally established by Fondazzjoni Ċentru Għall-Kreattività as ‘St James Cavalier Centre for Creativity’ in 2000, before being reimagined in 2015. It was established to enact the Fondazzjoni’s four main aims: To act as a catalyst for all forms of expression, by providing space and extending experience to reach all people and involve them in interactive participation.

To establish itself as a centre for cultural exchange with other countries, thus cultivating a sense of cultural identity based on local dimensions and international diversity in the light of Malta’s development of cultural tourism.

To offer an ongoing dialogue between the various artistic disciplines, in such a way as to conduct and encourage research and documentation related to the arts and popular creativity, while fostering an aesthetic and cultural awareness among the younger generation.

To contribute to the country’s economic and social development and prosperity by promoting artistic creativity as an alternative means of entertainment, self actualisation and empowerment.

Identity: 8

Creativity, art, and culture are different concepts related to one another. Who we are as a creative community depends on a clear understanding of the differences and overlaps between these three constructs. Proposals that acknowledge creativity as their foremost concern will be viewed more favourably than others that do so less clearly.

Diversity: Spazju Kreattiv seeks to present innovative work, encouraging creativity over other aspects of artistic expression. Simultaneously, as per the Fondazzjoni Kreattività‘s Mission Statement: we seek to act as ‘a catalyst for all forms of expression, by providing space and extending experience to reach all people and involve them in interactive participation. Proposals that engage new audiences as active participants and/or underrepresented formats of work are therefore deemed in line with this aspect of the strategic vision.

Legacy: Knowing where we come from and what we are leaving behind are essential qualities of engagement with aspects of legacy. While being aware of our heritage and how this informs new work, it is also necessary that works presented at Spazju Kreattiv demonstrate what will be left behind. This will provide the opportunity for future generations to appreciate the creative efforts presented in our time.

Spazju Kreattiv is committed to supporting the contemporary creative scene in all of its forms.

Our philosophy is to take in, reflect and support the country’s traditional and historical heritage and culture, and to provide local and international artists with a platform to do this.

Collaborations, Reach & Impact Community Collaborations Collaboration is integral to the Spazju Kreattiv Programme, and, more broadly, to contemporary creative expression. The Spazju Kreattiv Programme is built through collaborations, whether between colleagues, artists, entities, or between many entities and individuals.

A number of memoranda of understanding with public entities, as well as collaboration agreements with voluntary organisations facilitate Spazju

Kreattiv’s work, and allow a formal structure under which many of these collaborations operate.

Collaboration agreements with voluntary organisations allow Spazju Kreattiv to work more intensively with smaller organisations, offering support and practical encouragement, as well as artistic and administrative expertise.

Building on positive relationships, many of them developed informally over a long period of time, Spazju Kreattiv continues to foster these positive relationships, and to reach out to other entities and organisations in the coming years.

These agreements also serve to diversify the broad range of creative projects produced or contributed to by Spazju Kreattiv.

Strategic National Collaborations Memoranda of Understanding serve to formalise and strengthen collaborations between Spazju Kreattiv and other entities, thus allowing collaboration to work under a long-term framework towards a common goal.

Fondazzjoni Kreattività currently has a memorandum of understanding with Aġenzija Żgħażagħ, Malta College of Arts Science and Technology (MCAST) and the President’s Foundation for the Wellbeing of Society respectively.

Aġenzija Żgħażagħ and Spazju Kreattiv collaborated to form a positive and creative environment for young people within the programme. Similarly, the collaboration between Spazju Kreattiv with MCAST facilitated the ICA Festival, showcasing the work of graduating students from the Institute of Creative Arts, MCAST.

Collaboration Agreements exist between Fondazzjoni Kreattività and Electronic Music Malta, the Gabriel Caruana Foundation, the M3P Foundation, the META Foundation, Opening Doors Association and Wikimedia Community Malta respectively.

Electronic Music Malta collaborated through many music workshops and sessions, as well as the annual Circuits music conference.

The Gabriel Caruana Foundation participated in ŻiguŻajg through the Kreaturi project, and in VIVA through Azure Watch, and Fluid Space. At

the same time, Spazju Kreattiv continued to assist the Foundation on practical and administrative matters.

The M3P Foundation worked with Spazju Kreattiv on digital archiving projects, and the preservation of the cultural legacy of Malta.

The META Foundation opened the doors of its Valletta Contemporary; this allowed the collaboration to become closer, with a collaboration within the VIVA programme.

Spazju Kreattiv continued to work with Opening Doors Association on a practical level, supporting their creative work, and allowing them the physical and creative space to develop their projects.

Wiki Loves Monuments was a visible manifestation of the collaboration with Wikimedia Community Malta; through this project, thousands of participants submitted photos of heritage sites around Malta, and participated in the subsequent competition and exhibition.

International Collaborations acquisition of Yang Zhiling’s To Carry Along You Own Sunshine for Malta’s national art collection through the VIVA festival.

Through an ongoing relationship with Dresdenbased Ostrale Centre for Contemporary Art, Spazju Kreattiv co-produced Found ă Mentalism II, a large contemporary exhibition, showing the work of 40 international artists, and paving the way to a further collaboration in 2019.

Collaboration with the German Circle and the Goethe Institute contributed to the VIVA Festival; Found ă Mentalism I, part of VIVA 2018 came about through this collaboration. These entities also collaborated to bring a workshop on the genre of the Passion Play to Malta.

A long-term collaboration with the Virginia Centre for Creative Arts (VCCA) culminated in US artist Lisa Iglesias spending a positive and productive time at the Spazju Kreattiv Artists’ Residency in Gozo.

A relationship with the Estonian Embassy in Rome was created through Estonian Film Days, a series of fresh and contemporary Estonian films.

Spazju Kreattiv’s relationship with the Malta China Cultural Centre contintued very successfully during 2017/2018. Through this relationship, the programme opened with the Memory in Hand an exhibition of prized intangible cultural heritage of the Guizhou Province in China, including intricate embroidery,filligree silverwork, batik and wooden sculpture. This relationship continued with an exhibition of work by Maltese artist Alex Attard, entitled A Wandering Eye, showing work he created while travelling with the MCCC in China.

Also thanks to this relationship, two exhibtions by Chinese artists formed part of VIVA; The Shape of Volition by Zhang Tingqun, and The ‘Tao’ of Nature by Yang Zhiling, both curated by Liang Shuhan. Another highlight in this regard was the

A collaboration with the Embassy of the Netherlands facilitated the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR), screening live in the Spazju Kreattiv cinema.

The development and nurturing of relationships with international and diverse organisations, artists and entities is essential to the creation and curation of a vibrant, contemporary programme.

Through strategically chosen international networks, Spazju Kreattiv has continued to strengthen its international profile, and maintain a productive relationship with international entities.

The Embassy of Spain, the Alliance Française and the Honorary Consulate of Colombia also built their relationship with Spazju Kreattiv through the screening of foreign language films; bringing international content, as well as international audiences to Spazju Kreattiv.

With the European Parliament representation in Malta, Spazju Kreattiv took part in the LUX Film Prize, screening Sámi Blood, Western and 120 Beats per Minute, all nominated films in the 2017 LUX Prize.

International Networks

Through our collaboration with the International Confederation of Art Cinemas (CICAE), European Cinema Day saw Spazju Kreattiv participating in simultaneous film screenings with cinemas around Europe. CICAE is the only international association of art house cinema theatres of its kind, and is primarily a source of information and professional training for independent cinemas.

Our membership of Res Artis allowed us to reach out to Artists’ Residencies worldwide. Res Artis is an international network of over 490 centres, organisations and individuals.

Our membership of ASSITEJ, the international network of professionals working for children and young people, facilitates contact linked with ŻiguŻajg and parts of the Spazju Kreattiv Programme relating to young people. The ASSISTEJ network boasts over 90 international centres and organisations.

Fresh Arts Coalition Europe (FACE) is an international platform that promotes crossdisciplinary art forms. The network operates as a dynamic forum for ideas, experiences and professional exchanges, and offers support to its members and creative professionals. Membership of this platform allows us to make contact with similar-minded organisations internationally.

The 2017 edition of the ŻiguŻajg Festival was again awarded the Europe for Festivals, Festivals for Europe (EFFE) label, further strengthening its international reputation. EFFE is an international festivals network, an initiative of the European Union, and operates primarily a platform for encounters and exchanges of progressional expertise within a festival spectrum.

Building international partnerships, and cultivating Spazju Kreattiv’s presence internationally is also integral to the Spazju Kreattiv Programme. During the 2017/2018 season, we were very happy to become members of IETM - International network for contemporary performing arts. IETM is a network of over 500 performing arts organisations and individual members working in the contemporary performing arts worldwide: theatre, dance, circus, interdisciplinary live art forms, new media. Members include festivals, companies, producers, theatres, research and resource centers, universities and institutional bodies.

2017/2018 was a busy season for the Spazju Kreattiv Artists’ Residency Programme. Artists hailed from as far afield as North America and Israel, and worked in digital media, dance and performance. Artists were invited to apply for the Residency through an open international call, and were selected on the quality of their practice, and on their willingness to work with local members of the community.

Thus, a meaningful collaboration was formed through each Residency, whether through the archiving of common memories and iconographies, or through dance workshops with Gozitan teenagers.

Giuseppe Fanizza – Azure Watch September, October 2017 Giuseppe Fanizza is an Italian artist who works primarily in conceptual photography and video to investigate social landscape and topographic memory.

During his time in Gozo, Fanizza worked with the local community, archivists and photographers to begin a collective, multimedia archive of the Azure Window and the surrounding landscape .The Azure Window limestone arch was one of Gozo’s most famous landmarks, but it dramatically collapsed into the sea after a heavy storm early in 2017, attracting intense media coverage from across the world. The imagery of the Azure Window now remaining online shows a standardized iconography that could become the only future memory of the Gozo landmark. In order to avoid such homologation and loss of identity, a common action took place through Azure Watch. The collapse of the world famous Azure Window has had important consequences for the iconography and the topographic memory of Gozo landscape; Azure Watch documented this change in identity and produced a final exhibition at Dwejra Tower in September 2017.

Giuseppe was assisted in his research and work by volunteers Mary Attard, Johannes Buch and Andrew Pace. The San Lawrenz Local Council and Din l-Art Ħelwa gave their generous support to the project.

The project was further developed in May 2018 in collaboration with the Gabriel Caruana Foundation, to form part of the Valletta International Visual Arts Festival 2018.

Lisa Iglesias – Xewwex February, March 2018

Lisa Iglesias is a multimedia artist and Assistant Professor at the University of Florida in the United States. Through her drawing-based practice, Iglesias explores the personal and geological act of creation and construction as experienced or evidenced through time, in work that ranges from stop-animation and sculpture to collaborative strategies and participatory drawing events.

During her stay, Lisa Iglesias collected audio and images from the surrounding areas in Għarb and around Gozo to contribute to a new animation project that she is currently developing. In the studio, Iglesias conducted research towards the development of a new graduate seminar and course materials for her teaching at the University of Florida. She also facilitated a workshop with the students of Gozo College Secondary School which introduced students to a collaborative drawing process that incorporated conversations about identity and Maltese cultural signifiers.

Pearlie Frisch, Maria de la O Garrido, Samantha Harvey, Lena Heubusch, Candice Japiassu, Stephanie Sant, Célia Hay – The Procession of Disappearance April 2018

These seven artists have collaborated on several occasions, since attending Central St Martins College in London.

The Procession of Disappearance was a collective performance dealing with elements that are disappearing and have disappeared from the island of Gozo. These include soil erosion, unrecorded legends, the Gozitan dialect and the loss of beloved landmarks such as the Azure Window, or forgotten legends. The procession did not mourn these fragile and disappearing elements, but rather celebrated their ephemeral nature in the unique context of Gozo. This served as a reminder for many who take such powerful elements of identity for granted.

will long outlive us. Rituals out inspired by island stories were carried out as part of the procession; in line with the project’s feeling of disappearance and witnessing disappearance.

Gdalit Neuman – Something in the AiR May 2018

Gdalit Neuman is a Canadian-Israeli dancer, choreographer and educator. She has performed with the Rina Schenfeld Dance Theatre and The Israeli Opera, has choreographed independently both in Israel and Canada, and has been on faculty at Canada’s National Ballet School and York University’s Department of Dance in Toronto.

During her stay in Gozo, artist and choreographer Gdalit Neuman created a dance and movement project with teenagers from the island bringing her experience and practice to work with the group. Using movement techniques, the group explored issues that are central to their lives and to the lives of young Gozitan people. They explored elements of identity, hopes and aspirations. They looked at generational differences and similarities, and explored elements of tradition and changes in their world. At the end of the project, the group performed for their community.

Jennie Suddick and Anna Rose Ħawnekk (Here) August 2018 Jennie Suddick is a Maltese-Canadian artist based in Toronto, Canada. Suddick earned her MFA from York University and holds both a BFA and Advanced Visual Studies Certificate from OCAD University. Her work explores symbols and artistic themes that are shared and repeated across cultures, acknowledging the imprint they leave on individuals through their varied meanings.

Anna Rose has lived and worked in Florence, Italy since 2004. She received her MFA from San Francisco Art Institute in 2014. Her work spans photography, video, costume and installation with a sensibility towards the relationship between body and environment, entering into conversation with historical, psychological, and cultural mythologies of place.

As collaborators, Suddick and Rose work with large scale installations and digital media projects blending the elements and conceptual concerns of their respective practices. During Hawnhekk (Here), a series of projections was developed which drew on multi-generational personal narratives, tracing how contemporary living and history are intertwined in the unique, diverse culture of Malta and Gozo.

Permanent Collection Since 2000, Fondazzjoni Kreattività has amassed a substantial collection of art objects. These objects provide a wealth of information on modern and contemporary visual art in Malta from the past two decades.

The subsequent exhibition held from 15 February to 18 March 2018, made the project accessible to the public through several workshops and public discussions, and served as a documentation of archived pieces from the collection. Spazju Kreattiv collaborated with Wiki Media Malta, the M3P Foundation and Blitz in the creation on these auxiliary events. A particular focus was given to women in art through the art & feminism initiative and several workshops held at Blitz. This furthered the Fondazzjoni’s role in preserving cultural heritage and archiving contemporary work.

Apart from the actual works of art, which can also be considered as an archived document of the artists’ work, the project identified documentational elements such as project proposals, press releases,

During this period, the Fondazzjoni augmented its collection through several new works. These were Kapitell by by Victor Agius, Untitled (Yalta) by Mario Abela and To Carry Along Your Own Sunshine, by Yang Zhiling.

Another exciting development during 2018 was a request from Malta’s representative at the European Court of Auditors to exhibit work at their headquarters in Luxembourg. Work was begun on this; a selection of work from the Fondazzjoni’s collection travelled in August to be exhibited from 3 to 28 September 2018. Exhibiting work from the collection on a regular basis and in varying contexts will add value to the process of their documentation and raise awareness of the collection in the public consciousness.

We are currently attempting to identify the most suitable methods for long-term preservation and access of this collection in a sustainable manner; the engagement of a Digital Assets Coordinator by the Fondazzjoni is speeding the process of digitizing the collection and all information relating to it.

Following on from the research project which commenced in January 2016, work on compiling a detailed catalogue of Fondazzjoni Kreattività’s art collection currently stored at St James Cavalier is progressing; during 2017/ 2018 the work focused on the years 2007 to 2012. Works identified and catalogued included ceramics (Charlot Cassar), watercolour (Debbie Caruana Dingli) and oils (Olaug Vethal), however the process has also included the cataloguing of performance programmes, posters and exhibition catalogues.

Audience Engagement, Communications Spazju Kreattiv has continued to engage with audiences online, and through printed and television media. This, along with purposelydesigned programme series such as Art Additives

and Taħdita Teatru, have served to encourage audiences to engage and remain engaged with the Spazju Kreattiv Programme.

Spazju Kreattiv continued to consolidate its social media presence during the 2017/2018 season. In February 2018, the St James Cavalier facebook page was merged with the Spazju Kreattiv page, further consolidating audiences, and resulting in a jump in followers from 6,763 in September 2017 to 13,639 in August 2018. Of these followers, 84% are Malta-based, while the rest are international.

During this season, the website increased its international presence slightly, with 67% local engagement, and 23% international engagement.

The most popular pages were generally theatre productions with relatively long runs, however cinema screenings were the most popular strand overall. This reflects the website’s function of keeping audiences up to date with events, and providing online ticket sales to these events.

The bilingual kreattivita.org website continued to detail the programme’s events, calls and projects, and to act as a main point of contact for local and international audiences. The website continued to serve the Spazju Kreattiv programme through online ticket sales, online

In general, posting and social media engagement, reflected the activities and requirements of the Spazju Kreattiv Programme. A small number of online competitions were held, while sponsored posts were designed to be more targeted than in previous years, thus reaching relevant audiences more efficiently.

The Spazju Kreattiv Twitter (2,999 followers) and Instagram (1079 followers) pages continued to function in tandem with the facebook page, however facebook continues to be overwhelmingly the more popular online communication tool.

In terms of gender, slightly more followers are female than male on facebook, with a ration of 65:35, however this is reversed somewhat on twitter at 44:56.

The majority of our social media audience is aged 25-44, constituting 59% of total followers.

Spazju Kreattiv Programme

by Fondazzjoni Kreattività, namely the Artists’ Residency programme, the ŻiguŻajg Festival and the VIVA Festival. Each of these projects receives its own section in this Annual Review.

Calls for Proposals Projects enter the Spazju Kreattiv programme mainly through a series of calls for proposals issued during the previous year. These calls – effectively one continuously open call - provide an opportunity for creatives to propose collaborations with Spazju Kreattiv.

While this system allows a level playing-field to those wishing to collaborate with Spazju Kreattiv, we are now moving to also approach artists directly in order to co-produce or directly commission work, and to further become an enabler of creative work.

105 proposals were received during the 2017/2018 season. 70 of these, embracing 15 creative forms of expression were approved and developed within the Spazju Kreattiv programme.

15 Ikkrea Sessions were held in order to familiarise potential collaborators with the proposal process, and to ensure that the vision of Spazju Kreattiv was well understood.

Various other specific open calls were issued during the 2017/2018 Season. These included a call to collaborate with Portuguese musicians MODS Collection on the work of film-maker Cecil Satariano, a call for young people in Gozo to participate in a dance project with IsraeliCanadian choreographer Gdalit Neuman.

In May 2018 a call was issued to for established or emerging artists to present their work at the 2019 Ostrale Biennale in Klemnitz in 2019.

An international call was also issued for the DHRA 2018 Conference taking place in September 2019, hosted by Fondazzjoni Kreattività.

Lastly, a call for artists to participate in the 2018 / 2019 Artists’ Residency was also issued, resulting in 7 confirmed artists travelling to Malta next year.

Productions

Performance Performance has been a dominant creative form within Malta’s national centre for creativity since its inception. Theatre, dance and music remain the foremost performing arts in the Spazju Kreattiv programme, while innovative aspects of live art are also presented from time to time.

The Spazju Kreattiv 2017/18 theatre season contained a healthy number of productions featuring a mix of original works in Maltese and English. The season opened with Joe Julian Farrugia’s one-woman play Qaħba Jien? with Sarah Camilleri directed by Mario Micallef, who is certainly no stranger to performances comprising a monologue. Also worth noting is Moving Mountains, a new play of Vincent Vella directed by Josette Ciappara, produced by FOPSIM. The play was co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme through the EU collective plays project.

The number of original plays during this season was consistent with offerings in recent years. Most notably, Adrian Buckle’s Collapse produced by Unifaun following on from his debut as a playwright in our previous seasons.

Holding up newly established traditions, another contemporary social drama production for the Easter period entitled Ħarsa ta’ Kristu, written by Joseph Galea and directed by Carlos Farrugia, saw theatre goers once again flocking to the Spazju Kreattiv programme for a Good Friday matinee performance. This is particularly interesting in the context of Oberamergau’s Christian Stückl who presented a workshop for passion play and Easter-time pageant producers, which was presented in collaboration with the German-Maltese Circle and the Goethe Institute.

The undisputed highlight in the 2017/18 Spazju Kreattiv theatre season was a Raymond Fight Beck by Andrè Mangion, which played for nine consecutive nights in March. This was Teatru Malta’s inaugural production with artistic director Sean Buhagiar at the helm. Adrian Mamo’s set turned the theatre-in-the-round at St James Cavalier into a boxing ring flooded with rap tunes from local hip-hop masters Marmalja. An impressive cast of actors included Żep Camilleri, John Montanaro, Davide Tucci, Kim Dalli, Lilian Pace, Philip Mizzi, Peter Galea, Ray Abdilla, Frank Zammit, Andrè Mangion, and Hector Bruno.

Spazju Kreattiv’s collaboration with Teatru Malta extends to a number of other initiatives. Among these, the most durable is Taħdita Teatru, a series of discussions with the foremost contemporary theatre makers involved in Spazju Kreattiv and/ or Teatru Malta projects. Another collaboration is Proġett Francis Ebejer, which is the revised version of what was previously the playwriting competition known as Premju Francis Ebejer.

Teatru Manoel is the third collaborator on this project and the first iteration of the project is expected in the 2018/19 season.

A production of the award-winning Joan, produced by Drachma LGBTI, written and directed

by Lucy J. Skilbeck, featuring drag king Lucy Jane Parkinson, was also on the bill, while later on in the season, MalTease returned with a revised line-up for this year. While it did not constitute a conventional theatre project this neo-burlesque show drew on performing arts technique to offer their audiences a rather unique experience in the local performance scene. In a different way, Trevor Zahra’s Rediffusion Jippreżenta also provided a memorable performance event mixing archival research with hilarious comedy, presented to the general public as well as in special performances for school children as part of Arts Council Malta’s Culture Pass scheme.

Meanwhile, Rebecca Camilleri’s Thirst stood out in the season as a prime example of performance not driven by a dramatic text. Live art is not a form that is frequently presented in Malta, but when it is it almost always goes down well with the audiences who attend it.

Electronic Music Malta continued to delight with a number of performances and related events throughout the year. Concurrently, The Mediterranean Dimension an ARC Research & Consultancy project supported by Arts Council Malta and the Valletta 2018 – European Capital of Culture was presented in collaboration with Medinea, Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, A Soul for Europe, Centre for Research in Culture and Performance at the School of Performing Arts – University of Malta, Malta Society of Arts, and Spazju Kreattiv.

The Med-Combo 2 concert held in March was particularly thrilling, stemming from a artistic residency and workshop that led to an ethnic music concert performance, and a number of associated activities.

The 2017/18 Spazju Kreattiv programme contained a significant number of visual arts projects. The customary balance between Maltese and international works was somewhat disrupted this year between a special edition of VIVA and the ongoing collaboration with OSTRALE. Still, the types of work presented throughout the year continued to range from video art to painting, and from installation art to photography.

discuss artmaking techniques in a fast globalised world. This was presented in Space A concurrently with a large exhibition of intangible heritage from Guizhou Province in China in Space C. Most of the works came from a traveling exhibition called Memory in Hand comprising unique objects from the Guizhou Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum.

At around the same time, Malta paid host to the second edition of the global open photo contest Wiki Loves Monuments, in which over 70 participants from Malta and abroad contributed 5,646 new photos of buildings and objects listed in Malta’s Superintendency of Cultural Heritage’s inventory. That’s an average of about 80 photos per participant.

White Memory: Art in Malta and Poland 1989 - 2018 provided an excellent opportunity to compare work by contemporary Maltese artists with others from Poland. Curated by Irene Biolchini and Marinella Paderni, this exhibition presented the work of 18 artists across three generations: from the earliest explorers of what we now call contemporary art to young artists who until very recently were considered among the ones to watch from the names of emerging contemporaries.

Other exhibitions worthy of note include (Met)afourisms, a collaboration between four artists and four curators, and Found ă Mentalism II, a collaboration between Spazju Kreattiv and Dresden-based Ostrale Centre for Contemporary Art.

Also inspiring was the solo exhibition by Mario Abela called Dislocated Geographies, bringing together painterly approaches to digitally manipulated images.

The regular highlight of the season was contained within the fourth edition of VIVA (the Valletta International Visual Arts Festival - see later in this publication) which took place between April and May 2018. This edition continued to fully integrate into the Spazju Kreattiv season and featured most prominently the debut solo exhibition by Matthew Schembri and a large installation by Yang Zheling from China, sequentially in Space A. Other works during VIVA involved primarily collective exhibitions around themes woven together by a team of international curators working across a number of countries ranging three continents.

Many Spazju Kreattiv projects do not fall into traditional classifications of theatre, visual arts or music. The Spazju Kreattiv programme is broad enough to include a diversity of forms, thus engaging a wider audience, and hosting a multiplicity of forms and unconventional productions.

Spazju Kreattiv’s collaboration with the Malta Chamber of Scientists is a fruitful one which is a source of many activities and programmes. Workshops and film screenings provided opportunities for public talks and other such events, many linking science with the creative arts.

Workshops played a large part of this section of the programme; in October 2017, the Rima Digital Storytelling workshops allowed participants to engage with digital media and storytelling techniques, while soon afterwards in November 2017, the Passion Play Workshop, in collaboration with Teatru Malta, provided a master-class in this traditional theatre form. Later in the season, Años Luz gave a four-day workshop on shadow puppet making techniques. Other workshops were held in collaboration with Blitz and Wikimedia Malta which aimed at improving Wikipedia content across several areas, and linked with the Fondazzjoni Kreattività’s work on cataloguing its Permanent Collection.

The Taħdita Teatru and Art Additives series both served to link audiences with our programme through further discussions and talks. Another debate was facilitated by The Mediterranean Dimension Project, bringing together a number of speakers in the fields of interculturalism, multilingualism and festivals.

On the whole, these initiatives, and many more, served to bring audiences closer to the Spazju Kreattiv programme, and to open space for multidisciplinary activities throughout the season.

During the 2017/18 Spazju Kreattiv season the cinema at St James Cavalier continued to provide three types of screenings: art house films from around the world, live performances streamed via satellite from major international venues, and an assortment of film festivals.

Our cinema membership scheme, launched during the previous season, continued to provide access to private screenings and discounted tickets for all members, subject to availability. This, along with a number of technical improvements in the cinema at St James Cavalier, also meant that we were

able to offer a higher quality experience during this season. During the warmer months the renovated air conditioning system in the cinema was most welcomed, particularly by our regular patrons.

As in previous years, many art house and foreign language films were screened, in collaboration with the cultural offices of diplomatic representations in Malta. These were also greatly appreciated by attending audiences.

A Miloš Forman Season was programmed in August to mark the passing of this outstanding

director. The films shown included two of his earlier works before he moved to the USA from what was then Czechoslovakia, which were specially brought to Malta from the National Archives of the Czech Republic for these screenings.

In terms of festivals, the European Parliament’s Lux Prize screenings were as well-received as ever. Naturally, the Valletta Film Festival (VFF) proved to be the most popular of all film festivals in Malta. Now in its fourth year, the VFF continues to host events with us along with a number of other venues around Valletta. The Spazju Kreattiv Cinema was particularly buzzing with 23 students from the University of Salford’s BA (Hons) in Film Production, who came to familiarise themselves with the festival ahead of potentially submitting their own short films in next year’s contest. Our cinema was particularly busy around the screening of documentary films in competition, as well as a number of short films which were added to the broad selection of titles in the festival to delight film lovers of all tastes. Screenings of the awardwinning animated feature The Breadwinner were also particularly well attended.

Live screenings from London in the 2017/18 National Theatre Live series included a greatly acclaimed new production of Tony Kushner’s Angels in America, and Richard Bean and Clive Coleman’s Young Marx with Rory Kinnear in the title role.

The live screenings from the Bolshoi in Moscow also proved to be crowd-pullers, as in previous years. Audiences particularly enjoyed Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker in December and a new production of his Sleeping Beauty in January.

A highly anticipated production of Vincenzo Bellini’s Norma opened the season of live performance screenings from the Met Opera in New York, featuring Sondra Radvanovsky, Joseph Calleja and Joyce DiDonato in the leading roles.

Other operas from the Met programme received with great gusto by the Malta audiences included Verdi’s Tosca, Puccini’s La Bohème and Mozart’s Cosi Fan Tutte.

A number of encore screenings from previous seasons of NT Live, Met Live, and the Bolshoi Ballet were also well-received by the public.

Schools and Families The 2017/2018 Spazju Kreattiv programme included a strand targeting schools and families specifically in order to foster young audiences.

Workshops and performances encouraged critical thinking among young people, and engaged children in creative expression.

One important aspect of the strand is a highly beneficial collaboration with the ŻiguŻajg Festival.

This allows a feeding of projects both from the Spazju Kreattiv programme to the festival, and vice versa. A case in point is the Kreatturi project, by the Gabriel Caruana Foundation. This project allowed children to experience the work of Gabriel Caruana, as well as to participate in ceramic workshops. The resultant exhibition was shown, and workshops held as part of the Spazju Kreattiv Programme and the ŻiguŻajg Festival.

Another fruitful collaboration is Spazju Kreattiv’s participation in the Culture Pass initiative, which entitles all Maltese students to experience at least one artistic production per scholastic year.

This season, Spazju Kreattiv participated with

the performance Rediffusion Jippreżenta and screenings of The National Theatre’s Peter Pan, while previous ŻiguŻajg performances such as Your Voice Affects Me, and Blooming Creatures were also available through the scheme.

Hands-on workshops were an integral part of this strand; of note were the story-telling workshops Of Fairytales and You, and the season-long Kids Dig Science activities.

Films included Song of the Sea, Goodbye Berlin, Swagger, Cloudboy, while performances ranged from the fun-filled Il-Babaw to the dance performance Tar mar-Riħ, or the piece Your Voice Affects Me, aimed at teenagers. Many of these performances were originally ŻiguŻajg productions; repeating them at a later date allows a larger audience the opportunity to see the work.

Ultimately, the Schools and Families strand served to bring children closer to the Spazju Kreattiv Programme, and to foster their participation in future years.

Social Engagement

2017/2018 Annual Review

Social Engagement is an integral facet of the Spazju Kreattiv programme. This engagement provides opportunities to welcome communities to the programme, while diversifying our audience base. Creatives are supported as they engage with diverse social realities and audiences.

The programme opened with an exhibition relating to communication between people of different ages; Active Age - Intergenerational Dialogue, by Charlotte Stafrace. At the same time, the Digital Storytelling Workshops related to the RIMA project

to be exhibited at Spazju Kreattiv late in 2018 took place. A conference produced by our collaborator Opening Doors was well attended; Difference and Diversity: Leadership Training for Social Inclusion took place in November. During the same month, and in collaboration with the Malta China Cultural Centre, the Memory in Hand Creative Workshops were also enthusiastically received.

Also well attended were the Action Planet Speakers Series and Workshops, part of the Action Planet project.

VIVA’s main aim is to act as a unique visual arts platform that links local and international artists whilst extending curatorial knowledge. VIVA provides a platform for curators, artists and interested project leaders to work within the Festival’s remits. The fourth edition, presented during the months of April and May 2018 continued on the trajectory of the previous edition, which introduced a major shift in the number of curators involved in the festival. Fifteen curators presented projects from thirteen different countries. A broad range of contemporary visual art works were presented by the curatorial team: from photography, painting and installation works to arthouse cinema screenings with a live soundtrack.

The main theme for the fourth edition of VIVA was Multiplicity. The selected theme was one that understandably contained multiple dimensions; it could be viewed from many perspectives, depending on the artist, the curatorial vision, the work itself, and in some cases even the venue where it was exhibited to the public. The theme also encapsulated continuity in terms of the working relationships between the cultural organizations involved in bringing VIVA together.

This edition of VIVA continued on the broadened location of venues for the festival beyond the capital city introduced in VIVA III. However, this particular edition had special aspects lined up with the Valletta 2018 European Capital of

Culture programme. Support from international collaborators including the Goethe Institute, the German-Maltese Circle, Ostrale, the China Cultural Centre in Malta, École d’Art au Village (EDAAV), and EU Japan Fest was particularly noticeable during this edition.

Also worthy of note for VIVA is the direct alignment of the festival with the Spazju Kreattiv programme. This provided an opportunity for a number of artists and curators whose work was integral to the programme prepared for the 2017/18 season to present their work within the context and timeframe of the VIVA Festival.

VIVA also benefited from direct engagement with Fondazzjoni Kreattività’s Artist-in-Residence programme, which ran throughout the year in collaboration with the Valletta 2018 Foundation at META Foundation’s Artists’ Residency in Għarb, Gozo. This year, the Artist-in-Residence project included a collaboration with the Gabriel Caruana Foundation who hosted two VIVA projects at the Mill in Birkirkara.

VIVA will be a significant and important part of the cultural legacy of Valletta 2018. It is envisioned that VIVA will become an even larger celebration for international contemporary visual arts in Malta in the coming years.

ŻiguŻajg The seventh edition of ŻiguŻajg International Arts Festival for Children and Young People was produced between the 17th and 26th of November, in Valletta, Floriana and Gozo. ŻiguŻajg has grown steadily to become a much-anticipated event in the national cultural calendar; this edition saw 25 productions shown over 10 days, with an exciting selection of new Maltese works, as well as other productions from international artists.

Contemporary topics such as the meaning of family ties, the effects of solitude, the importance of the natural environment, and the importance of freedom of expression were explored through creativity and performance.

Children themselves were encouraged to participate and express themselves through a visual art installation in the squares of the capital with The Wishing Thread, while younger children took part in several interactive performances by Lithuanian company Dansema. Kreaturi allowed children to interact with ceramics, and participate in workshops and a beautiful, vibrant exhibition.

An element of magic and the unexpected was present in performances such as H2ommes and Little Max, while the challenges of reality were introduced through Life - A Mud Pie, War and Aħn’Aħwa Jew M’Aħniex? Film also featured through the Irish production The Song of the Sea, and the beautiful Goodbye Berlin.

A performance was created purposely for Gozo; Opera Antagonisti by Malta Youth Orchestra. This, along with One Morning I Left, formed an exclusive programme for young Gozitan audiences.

The Festival continued to invest in the national repertoire and in local artists and performers professional development by commissioning ten new local works, as well as networking sessions for professionals and international delegates.

Artistic Director’s Afterword The need to systematically address the gap in the strategic documentation of Fondazzjoni Kreattività’s activities and projects was one of the reasons I gave for the creation of Spazju Kreattiv’s Annual Review during its inaugural season in 2015/16. Now that we’ve delivered the third iteration of this report, I am pleased to say that we have an easily accessible set of documents containing a record of projects facilitated by Fondazzjoni Kreattività during my term as Spazju Kreattiv’s Artistic Director.

The creation of the Annual Review is a key activity that enables a more deliberate approach to keeping track of creative projects and other activities within Spazju Kreattiv. After three years of pulling together seasonal programmes under the banner of Spazju Kreattiv, we have a clear sense of what we do as a public cultural organization operating on a national level within an international context for creativity.

We continue to lead with our aim to serve as a catalyst for the creative sector in Malta. Simultaneously, we are now also addressing more visibly the second part of the Foundation’s official purpose, namely ensuring that we take action on our philosophy “to also take in, reflect and support the country’s traditional and historical heritage and culture.” This is now integrated into our workflow and working models, rather than something we only do whenever we have some time left over from creating new projects. While the cultural heritage sector in the country has been significantly professionalized over the last couple of decades, Fondazzjoni Kreattività champions contemporary cultural heritage like no other public entity in Malta.

Through our Annual Review, we also continue to explore better ways to preserve memories and documents associated with all the projects in our programmes. By taking a general overview of all the major activities that took place in and around the 2017/18 Spazju Kreattiv programme, we create an opportunity for a better understanding of the need to preserve the ideas and efforts that went into creating the projects. A better reference point for future creative projects and strategic directions to catalyse the creation of new high quality works remain among the broader benefits of having such a report produced on a regular basis.

I like to think of our Annual Review as a useful exercise of reflection and assessment on the high and low points of the previous season. It also ensures that the memory of whatever goes on through great effort is retained in a somewhat systematic way, even if this remains an area that can continue to be augmented substantially in years to come. As I’ve stated in previous years, my plan and ultimate goal is to use these annual reviews as a way to enable the preservation of all sorts of documents arising from the projects we support or produce ourselves, so that future generations may have a solid reference point to explore what may or may not have happened in that part of Malta’s creative scene we help make available to various types of audiences. This squares up perfectly with one of two clear elements in the purpose of Fondazzjoni Kreattività, and one of its stated mission statement aims.

Spazju Kreattiv’s regular workflow now includes the creation of an Annual Review as a matter of course.

As we feverishly continue to support new creative projects and the broadly defined contemporary art scene in Malta, we now also have a way to evaluate the state of creative affairs within and around Spazju Kreattiv towards improving the quality of projects presented.
