04 Spiral Pavilion Bachelor Second Year SM1 ARCH20004 Digital Design| Individual Work |Tutor: Samuel Lalo (samuel.lalo@unimelb.edu.au) This project addresses the design generating process through digital fabrication (Waffle Structure & Boolean Volume), and the idea generated through digital process is applied to the design of Queen Victoria Garden Pavilion. The representation is equipped by Unreal Engine 4 to achieve real time render and provide VR experience to audience.

Pyramid panels with small triangular- shape openings created by weavebird define a boundary between exterior and interior. The small triangular-shape openings working as thresholds allow light to come into interior space from different a direction, which creates interesting shadows in the interior space.

Paneling

Panels are bigger at the bottom and top parts of the surface. I use the ‘tripartite method’ on modern architecture to divide the whole building into three parts: top, middle, bottom.

Enlarging the top and bottom parts can increase the size of openings at the bottom and top, which lets people enjoy better view.

Plan View at Night-Shadows The topography is designed to integrate with the pavilion, which offers a possibility for people to access the central part of the enneper canopy and the seminar place on upper level.

The panels made by steel frame are designed to be thresholds that allow light to come through and create interesting shadows in the interior space; At night, it allows light in the interior space to come out and show the patterns.

The enneper surface works as a floor plane for upper level and a roof for the underground part.

Underground Space

The glass panels with steel frame are used in the underground concert place to allow people to enjoy the concert from outside.

The enclosure space formed by the glass panels is also designed to capture the sound of the musical quartet.

Roof Sheets and FIxtures 1a. Roof sheeting: Zincalume Lysaght Kliplock 406 (BMT 0.48mm) with 18mm thick Plywood backing (Design Load: 2*250kg per span).

The roof sheet has 406mm coverage with overlapping rib and underlapping rib. The roof sheets are overlapped and bolted (using a clip) to prevent moisture coming into the roof structure through the gap between two sheets. All the sheets are located towards prevailing weather for wind resistance and galvanised for rust protection.

1a. KL65 Clip. This fixing clip is used to fix KLIP-LOK 406 to steel or timber supports without puncturing the sheet, which helps to keep the straight lines of roof remain smooth without exposed fasteners.

1b.18mm ply backing: It is used under the roof sheet to provide a surface for roof sheet to be fixed using clip.

BM and VPM: Considering the proximity of Yarra river (high moisture content), breather membrane (BM) and Vapour Permeable Membrane (VPM2) are applied to all areas of roof sheet over plywood lining.

2a. VPM2: VPM2 prevents the entry of liquid water and dust from outside but it allows water vapour to pass through it.

2b. BM: The breather membrane is water-resistant (as well as snow, dust and so on) but air-permeable, which is used to prevent condensation and allows air to circulate. BM can also act as a wind barrier to restrict the movement of air through the wall.

100mm Permastop (R(m)2.5) building blanket: with heavy duty foil sisalation adhered The roof insulation is used to slow the heat transfer in roof area. The insulation is installed with 75mm 'Roof Rack' thermal spacer installation system. The insulation spacer is applied between the roof structure and the external membrane to create the space required for insulation blanket to recover to its 100mm full nominal thickness between purlins.

Wire Safety Mesh: The dimension of wire safety mesh is 100*115*1.25mm. It is installed under insulation layer and is used to provide fall protection for roof installers and offers long-term fall protection for repair workers and maintenance. The safety mesh is installed with 15mm lag between purlins to allow insulation to recover to 100mm nominal depth.

Folded Colorbond Flashing: The roof flashing is installed for achieving a watertight roof. It can effectively prevent rain water from running down and entering the building.

Custom Folded Aluminium Capping: The capping is custom folded to ensure the detail is matched and maintained. It is placed on the gap between roof and claddings. It can not only work as an edge finish layer but also prevent the unwanted elements such as water and dust into the building. It is intalled with a silicon seal.

6a. Packer is bolted to capping ang then bolted to a steel studs to hold the capping in right place.

Packer: the packer is placed between the roof ply backing and column SC9(150UC23), which is used to fit the 5-degree pitched roof to the flat top of column. The packer is fixed with SC9 top plate by bolting.

Wall Girt: the wall girt is connected to the universal column SC9 (150UC23) The cleat plate is bolted on the bottom of wall girt and it is welded to SC9. It is used fixed the cladding with EW11.

8a. Packer is bolted on the top wall girt and then it is fixed to a steel stud, which is used to hold the wall girt in right space.

8b. Adjustable girt hanger It is primarily used to assist in alignment and stabilization of fascia beam (FB26). The wall girts are attached to a slotted channel in the girt bridging assembly.

Two Universal Column SC9: Type-150UC23 Hot Rolled. The column is fixed to R.C. beam 1B37 by 12 base plate on 20 NOM. GROUT (4M20 chemset anchor with 100 edge distance and 150 embedment). The top of it is fixed to the roof ply backing by bolting to a packer with 5 degree pitched top(detail 1). It is a structural column which is used to transfer the load from roof to 1B37.

FB24(250PFC) to SC9 Connection FB24 (250 PFC) is fixed to the Column SC9 (150UC23) by using 12 cleat plate, 6CFW 2M20 8.8/S BOLTS (TYP.). The 12 mm thick cleat is welded to column SC9 by 6 mm wide continuous fillet weld and use 2M20 bolts to fix cleat with FB24.

FB26(250PFC) to SC9 Connection FB26 (250 PFC) is fixed to the Column SC9 (150UC23) by using 12 cleat plate, 6CFW 2M20 8.8/S BOLTS (TYP.). The 12 mm thick cleat is welded to column SC9 by 6 mm wide continuous fillet weld and use 2M20 bolts to fix cleat with FB26. (detail 2)

Purlins to FB25 Connection Fascia beam FB25 can not only works as a fascia to cap the roof structure, but also can supported the purlins. FB25 is a primary structure and the purlins are fixed to FB 25 with 6CFW 2M20 8.8/S BOLTS (TYP.).

Purlins bridging: 3 rows bridging Purlins bridging is installed to enhance purlin performance and to assist with the erection of roof sheeting.

Sag Rods: Sag rods are used to prevent the sagging of an open-web steel joist that is used as a purlin with its depth at right angles to a roof slope. It is used in connection with purlins to take the component of the loads which is parallel to the roof.

Bracing: It is used for lateral resistant, which is important in earthquake resistant and wind resistant. The bracing is fixed to the column by using 12 cleat plate, 6CFW 2M20 8.8/S BOLTS (TYP.). The bracings are placed in the holes on beams.

Moved-in roof truss and column SC9 (to show the load path) The roof truss RT12 and another SC9(150UC23) are moved from the east part to show the load path (roof sheet-purlins-roof truss-columns-footings-foundation). Purlins are fixed to the roof truss by a cleat welded with roof truss. The 8-cleat plate is fixed to purlins by 6CFW 2M12 4.6/S BOLTS (TYP.). The roof truss is fixed with column SC9 by 12 cleat plate,6 CFW 5M20 8.8/S BOLTS (TYP.). 12 thick full depth stiffeners are welded between two flanges of column by 6CFW on both sides.

18a. Top plate of Roof Truss-150UC30 It is hot rolled and galvnised for rust protection.

18b.Stiffener are secondary plates attached to SC9 flanges to stiffen them against out of plane deformations.

Metal Cladding MC1 (with 5-degree rotation to fit the inclined window): Aluminium Sheet Panel. MC1 cladding is installed with a water-proof membrane (Galvanised sheet for rust protection: 0.3 BMT Bluescope Zincalume G300) and a rain-screen (5.0 mm thick flat aluminium sheet with 1,0mm pre-weather Anthra Zinc insert), which is used to prevent moisture come into the building though the cladding.

2a. Wall girts- the wall girt is connected to the universal column SC9 or 1B37 with cleat connection. It is used to connect the cladding system with the EW11.

2b. Top hats-22 top hats (run horizontally) and 44 top hats (run vertically) with mid span are used to fix the wall girts to MC1. The top hats are fixed to wall girts by cleat.

An aluminium backing plate is mechanically fixed between the top hats and cladding system.

2c. Aluminium backing plate: It is fixed to the cladding with a VHB tape in between. The backing plate is used to provide stiffness and rigidity by using friction force.

2d. Custom folded Z section: It is used to fix the gap between two panels of MC1, which is contributes to both waterproof and aesthetic (hiding the structures behind the cladding). The flat part of this Z section is cleated to 40 top hats. Z section is connected to a piece of ply backing with MC1 infill and 20*20 packer.

2e. Weather proof membrane: it is used to prevent moisture from coming into the building (It is a response to the proximity to Yarra river.)

Insulation- IN1- 110mm Thick Soundscreen: Acoustic insulation is used on the exterior wall to prevent the unwanted noise into the house.

FC1(Fibre cement sheet): The 6mm fibre cement sheet is used on wet area lining, which is used for waterproofing (considering the proximity to Yarra river). It is installed with Flush joints and square set corners.

Folded aluminium sill trim: The sill trim is located under the MC1 sheets, which is used to hold pieces in place and slope downward to drain water.

Cladding MC3: VM Zinc. MC3 is installed with VM Zinc Flat Lock Seam Panel System, which means overlapping the panels for waterproofing.

8a In this part, MC3 is fixed on a ply backing and framing, and then the backing is fixed to the window jamb. A waterproof membrane is placed between backing and window jamb, which is used to prevent moisture come into the building.

(Detail 2) 8b In this part, the MC3 cladding is fixed to an inclined packer (5 degree slope), and then the packer is fixed the 1b37 by cleated top hats. the packer is used to fill the gap between inclined MC3 and vertical beam surface.

8c In this part, MC3 is fixed to EW23, and in the corner, it is fixed to the other window jamb with a flashing lap into the window jamb.

Window sill: It is used to hold window jambs in place and slope downward to drain water.

Double glazed window: The window is double-glazed with a packer in between.

Sarking: It is installed in EW23 to make the insulation work more efficiently and prevent moisture or dust to come in.

Universal Column 150UC23: It is a primary structure using for load transfer.

Double-layer 13mm water proofing plasterboard: This area is a bathroom, so it is easy to get wet. The waterproof plasterboards are applied to WT31A (both inside and outside to prevent the moisture come through the wall.

Insulation-IN2- 88mm Thick Soundscreen：It is used to prevent the toilet or water pipe noise from coming through the wall.

Reinforcement for 1B35: N12 300 CTS ligature with 3 layers of N16 reinforcement bars. The concrete cover of this beam is 50mm and concrete strength is 40Mpa and the reinforcement has a joint to prevent the ligature from touching the concrete surface and even being exposed.

EW23(150+50mm steel studs) to FB24(250PFC) Connection The 200mm steel top plate sits on the top of EW23 is welded to the steel stud. Fascia beam FB24 is bolted to the steel top plate and covered by MC3 cladding system.

10b. Steel Studs: 150mm steel studs. The steel studs are welded to top and bottom plates to hold a space for EW11. FB26 is fixed with the top plate by bolting. All the steel studs for external wall is cold formed framing.

10c. Wall Bracing: WB1-75*8 MS Plate (Mild Steel Plate- Mild steel has good ductility and malleability.) It is used for lateral resistant, which is important in earthquake resistant and wind resistant. The wall bracing is fixed to the column by using 12 cleat plate, 6CFW 2M20 8.8/S BOLTS (TYP.). The 12 mm thick cleat is welded to column SC9 by 6 mm wide continuous fillet weld and use 2M20 bolts to fix cleat with WB1.

10d. Noggings: A mistake of wall bracing can be seen in the construction photo-THE WALL BRACING GOES THORUGH THE WALL STUDS BY CUTTING THE STUDS, WHICH CAN WEAK THE STRENGTH OF WALL STUDS. Therefore, noggings are placed between the wall studs (fixed to the studs by welding) to increase the stiffness and strength and offer rigidity to a framework.

Tendons for post-tensioned concrete: This tendon contains 4 Dia. 12.7mm strands and be placed in the post-tensioned concrete slab/beam.

It is used to apply tension force to the strands. After everything is tensioned, grout is poured in via the tubes shown in the diagram below to help anchor the tendons in place.

Ground floor structural column:C40.

This bearing capacity of this column is 40Mpa, and the reinforcement of it is 8N20 with R10ligature@300CTS. For this chosen 2*2 area, GF has no structural element to support the FF. This column is the nearest structural element, so it is moved to show the connection with FF beam. The reinforcement bars are bent to connected with the reinforcements on 1B56, then the loads of FF can be transferred to GF and then to the footing and foundation by this column.

First Floor Beam 1B36 Rebate: The rebeate is cut to fit the window in and there is a packer put on the rebate to fit the inclined window with horizontal rebate surface.
