HELLO FROM YOUR LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR! A.G. West Black Hills ~ Capital ~ North Thurston ~ Olympia ~ River Ridge ~ Shelton ~ Timberline ~ Tumwater

Hello Division 38! As I enter my last month as your Lieutenant Governor, I cannot believe how incredibly fast it has all gone by! From getting to meet all of you at DCON last year to now preparing to say good bye in less than just a month, I want to take some time in this newsletter to reflect on all we have accomplished this year as a division. Let me first start by saying how great of an honor it has been serving alongside each and every single one of you. You have all become extraordinary leaders that have changed our community in some way for the better! As we approach the finale event of the Key Club year, I hope to see many of you at DCON 2014. It will be a weekend to celebrate everything this division has accomplished. I am confident that we will be one of the loudest and most spirited divisions there. Let’s go out and show the rest of the Pacific Northwest District how amazing the GREAT DIVISION 38 is! Remember that there is a mandatory DCON Prep Meeting on the 22nd of this month. Everyone going to DCON is expected to attend. We will be going over final details and creating spirit signs and tutus! Once again, it has been such an honor serving you all this year! I’ve enjoyed getting to know each and every single one of you better. Thank you for all the hard work you have put in to not only grow your clubs but also this division. I am the confident that Georgette will do a great job leading this division in the upcoming year. Until next time, see you all at the DCON Prep party! In Care and Service,

Kevin Zhang Kevin Zhang Division 38 Lieutenant Governor Pacific Northwest District Key Club International

As per popular request, we will also be making spirit tutus for DCON at the DCM! All members attending DCON are required to attend. Chaperones are encouraged to come at least for the first 30 minutes to review final DCON procedures. Spirit packs will also be passed out at the beginning of the meeting! To Bring List: In order to help make the spirit signs, please bring markers, crayons, color pencils, and any additional art supplies you may have! Remember to label anything you bring with your name. I will provide the poster paper. Also, for the spirit tutus please bring your own pair of scissors.

What will we do?  Support the ELIMINATE project by purchasing ELIMINATE T-shirts and lanyards!  Hold a club fundraiser and donate all the money to ELIMINATE!

What is the ELIMINATE Project? The Eliminate Project is a joint project with Kiwanis and UNICEF to internationally terminate MNT.

What is MNT? MNT is caused when tetanus spores, found in soil everywhere, come into contact with open cuts during childbirth. The disease strikes the poorest of the poor, the geographically hard to reach and those without health care.

Who suffers from MNT? In 30 countries around the world, maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) can quickly turn the joy of childbirth into tragedy. MNT kills one baby every nine minutes. Its effects are excruciating– tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. There is little hope of survival. And tetanus kills mothers too.

DCON 2014 When: April 4th-6th, 2014 Where: Seattle Convention Center and the Seattle Sheraton Who: Any member can go! Incoming officers are required to go in order to receive their training. Theme: Level Up In Service

DCON Reminders:  Each club is responsible to get their members to either of the two bus pick up locations on Friday: Shelton High School (bus leaves at 12:00pm) or Olympia High School Stadium Parking Lot (bus leaves at 12:45pm).  Since it is not practical for our entire division to fit into one restaurant, each club is now responsible for arranging all meals (this includes Saturday night dinner). It is up to the club on whether or not they want to make Saturday night’s dinner “formal”. Keep in mind that there will be nearly 2,000 Key Clubbers all looking to have dinner at the same time!  The packing list can be found in Section A. Please remember to pack lightly.  Each club needs to email me the names and phone numbers of everyone going to DCON (including chaperones) immediately. This way, attendance can be taken on the bus prior to leaving in order to ensure everyone is on the bus.

Founded in 1915, Kiwanians around the globe have one common goal: To serve the children of the world. Kiwanis advocates this vision every day by providing opportunities to serve for every member of a community through Service Leadership Programs. Through these opportunities, youth and young adults around the world become competent, capable and compassionate leaders. Key Clubs could not possibly operate without the help of their sponsoring Kiwanis Club. Therefore, it is not only vital to establish communication with your sponsoring Kiwanis Club, but it is equally as important to maintain a strong relationship with that particular club.

What is Key Leader? Key Leader is a weekend experiential leadership program for today's young leaders. This life-changing event focuses on service leadership as the first, most meaningful leadership-development experience. A Key Leader will learn the most important lesson of leadership—it comes from helping others succeed. Participants begin by attending a Key Leader conference, which is a weekend retreat. Large and small group workshops, discussions and team-building activities take place over the course of the weekend. Students have opportunities to learn leadership skills that will help them to change their schools, communities, and world for the better. While exploring leadership in a whole new way, participants will make amazing new friends and have experiences they will never forget. Positive, ongoing interaction with other Key Leader graduates offers continuing reinforcement, encouragement and growth of leadership skills.

At Relay For Life events, communities across the globe come together to honor cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against a disease that has already taken too much. The funds you raise truly make a difference in the fight against cancer – just ask one of the nearly 14 million cancer survivors who will celebrate another birthday this year! Relay teams camp out overnight and take turns walking or running around a track or path at a local high school, park, or fairground. Relay events are up to 24 hours in length and, because cancer never sleeps, each team is asked to have at least one participant on the track at all times. This year’s Thurston County Relay For Life will be on June 27th starting at 6:00 pm at Timberline High School. Division 38 has been welcomed to join OHS Key Club’s team, OHS Students for Coach McDougall. To join, click here. For more information, contact Michaela Del Priore at michaela.delpriore@gmail.com. Start signing up today! This event is open to everyone so share it with your clubs!
