GENERAL INFORMATION Welcome to the 2016 International Convention! We are so excited that you have chosen to join us in Atlanta for this year’s program. If this is your first Convention, we welcome you with open arms and challenge you to learn as much as you can; if you’re joining us again, you might notice a few new things this year. This book will be your guide throughout the program and includes all sorts of helpful information for your time with us.

Should you have any questions not covered here, please be sure to visit us at the registration/information desk located in the lower lobby of the hotel. It’s time to experience the World of ZBT! MEAL TICKETS The International Convention affords you a great opportunity to meet brothers from other chapters and colonies, hear about the successes of your brothers and learn from experienced faculty members.

When you picked up your registration materials, you were given meal tickets. These tickets will be used throughout the program, and we ask that you carry them with you at all times. Meal tickets will be collected at each meal. If you do not have the appropriate meal ticket for each meal, you will not be permitted to eat that meal. Please keep them with you at all times.

Should you misplace or lose your tickets, please notify a member of the staff immediately or visit the registration desk for assistance in replacing lost tickets.

ZETA BETA TAU STORE TICKETS If you are attending the International Convention as a fullconvention attendee or if you purchased a polo during your registration, you also received a ticket to be used in the on-site store. You may turn in your tickets at any time to the store to obtain your polo.

IN CASE OF FIRE While our facility has taken every possible precaution for your safety, there are several steps you should take to assure your own safety. Be sure to read the emergency instructions located in your hotel room and familiarize yourself with any and all exits from the building. If a fire alarm is sounded while you are in the building, exit the building immediately. Do not use elevators to exit the building. Once you have exited the building, we ask that you go to our meeting space located at the corner of Peachtree Rd. and Highland Rd. next to Charles Schwab and Brand Bank.

ATLANTA PUBLIC TRANSPORATION - MARTA The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) is the primary public transportation option serving the Atlanta area. A map of the rail stations is pictured below. There are four primary routes (red, green, blue and gold). The stop closest to our hotel is the Red Line’s Buckhead stop. For more information on fares, schedules and bus routes, please visit the MARTA website at www. itsmarta.com.

NAMETAGS We ask that you wear your nametag at all times while in attendance at the International Convention. This allows for staff and faculty to quickly identify brothers and provide any necessary assistance. It is also a great to help you network with other brothers in attendance.

MEDICAL EMERGENCIES In the case of illness or injury, immediately call the facility operator and ask for assistance, being sure to describe the nature of the problem and your location. Render first aid as appropriate and to the extent of your medical knowledge until trained help arrives. Do not hesitate to call 911 from any phone if necessary. For non-medical emergencies, please contact the Fraternity professional staff below.

Dear Brothers,

Welcome to Atlanta! I’m so glad you are able to be a part of the 2016 International Convention. You will have a unique opportunity to engage in Fraternity at its finest this weekend.

Welcome to the 2016 Zeta Beta Tau International Convention and Leadership School. Also, welcome to my city, “Hotlanta”. There is no better city for a convention than Atlanta, and you are in the best area of the big city.

We have accomplished much in the past school year as a brotherhood and we have many opportunities for which to be thankful. Be proud of what you and your chapter or colony has achieved. Let there be no doubt, ZBT is on the rise. We are seeing record recruitment results and expansion efforts.

Our new alumni engagement programs, undergraduate housing initiatives and community engagement programs are delivering concrete benefits to our undergraduates, alumni and the communities we serve. Over the next three days, you will hear examples of great accomplishments by your brothers. Learn from them. Learn from our fantastic mentors and our phenomenal staff. Together, with your help, we will continue to do great things.

Our theme this weekend is “The World of ZBT.” This Convention is focused on bringing together undergraduates and alumni from around the globe and from many diverse backgrounds. It’s particularly fitting that we are meeting in Atlanta, which is the home of so many key events in the history of the Civil Rights movement. Remember that ZBT was founded in direct response to intolerance. We celebrate that part of our heritage by meeting here in Atlanta. I strongly encourage all of you to join us on Sunday when we visit the National Center for Civil and Human Rights.

Most importantly, I encourage you to take the time to get to know as many brothers as possible this weekend. They are an incredible resource. Take advantage of the opportunities you are given to learn and engage. Have a great time. Be safe. Return to your chapters energized about our great brotherhood.

ZBT is much more than a fraternity on your campus. We are a brotherhood spanning the world.

I know everyone will enjoy themselves. However, a big part of coming to the ZBT Convention is to take your experiences, lessons, and knowledge learned back to your chapters and share them with everyone.

For both undergraduates and alumni, there are programs and speakers that will assist you to: enhance your leadership abilities; give you ideas to improve chapter programming and participation; and help you clarify and establish professional and individual goals in life. Go to every session and each time write down at least one idea that can help you in the above areas. Try to meet as many people as possible and share experiences and ideas with them. You will make new lifetime ZBT friends and will go home extremely motivated. Take that motivation and put your new ideas into action. A big addition this year is our visit to the nationally renowned Center for Civil and Human Rights. This is a must attend.

The Zeta Beta Tau Foundation concentrates on fundraising for scholarships, leadership development, Israel education, anti-Semitism prevention programs, heritage and mentoring activities with both undergraduates and alumni. My goal at this event is to meet and talk with as many attendees as possible. I want to be a sounding board and share ideas with you. The same is true for all the Zeta Beta Tau Foundation Directors.

Greetings: I’m pleased to add my outstretched hands of welcome to ZBT Brothers around the world. The fact that my Community has been chosen for this honor is a definite point of pride to me I want you to share.

As a former national officer of our Fraternity, and a former Mayor of this City, I know of the many options available only to delegates in a capital city like Atlanta, a short train or taxi ride from the world’s largest airport. My experience assures you each benefits of education, of fellowship, and of hospitality.

I am now the founding president of this twenty-seven-year Buckhead Coalition nonprofit civic organization comprised of 100 Chief Executive Officers of major area businesses. You will see on this letterhead among our members are three billionaires from Forbes’ Richest Americans, CEOs of Fortune 5OO companies, the Chairman of the New York Stock Exchange, and other business notables, including some ZBT alums. ln this role, I’m pleased to make available to each delegate a complimentary copy of the 2Ol6 BuckheadGuidebook (containingthree books: Tourism, Relocation, and Development). The tourism section will introduce you to sightseeing, dining, and general entertainment, as well as a list of major City-wide attractions. Of course, if you later decide to relocate to Buckhead and/or invest in business here, the balance of the book will open those doors.

EXPECTATIONS GENERAL EXPECTATIONS Each delegate and attendee of the 2016 International Convention is expected to behave in a mature, responsible manner so as not to bring disgrace or discredit to himself or the respected name of ZBT. Behavior must be above reproach at all times.

WARNING! The legal drinking age is 21. The use of illegal drugs will not be tolerated. Those in violation of the law will be subject to arrest and/or incarceration. The Fraternity will support any police action and will not assume responsibility for posting bail for anyone.

The Fraternity reserves the right to confiscate alcohol from any delegate and to send home anyone who attends an International Convention function in an intoxicated state.

Incidents which occur in guest rooms are the responsibility of those registered to that hotel room. When you leave your room, be sure the door is locked and do not give anyone your key. Do not let anyone use your room.

Misbehavior may result in the offenders being sent home and charged for any damages. Their chapter or colony will also be fined. Individuals may be expelled from the Fraternity.

This is an important meeting of the Fraternity and will allow you to have a voice in the future of the Fraternity. Your sober input and participation are keys to the event’s success.

These are rules. Plain and simple, if damage is done and the offending person(s) cannot be identified, all International Convention delegates will share in the responsibility for the damage.

DELEGATE BEHAVIOR OATH As a reminder, you signed the following behavior oath when you registered for the 2016 International Convention.

The 2016 International Convention programs are educational and leadership programs of the Fraternity and as such we impart specific expectations upon each delegate (required or additional) during his attendance at the program. The Fraternity and its staff reserves the right to handle situations of improper behavior and will determine the proper recourse on a case-by-case basis which may ultimately include being dismissed from the program. Should you be dismissed from the program, your chapter will be charged the cost of your attendance and any other costs associated with your dismissal.

The use of alcohol or illegal drugs during the program time period (defined as during official meeting times in line with the program schedules) will not be tolerated. Brothers choosing to participate in these activities may be asked to leave the program.

SOCIAL MEDIA POLICY & EXPECTATIONS We hope that you will join us in participating in the online conversation as part of the 2016 International Convention.

Brothers are expected to follow the standard of conduct outlined by their chapter/colony and the International Fraternity.

Online sites, social media and other groups and communication from brothers should never be: • Derogatory toward themselves, the brotherhood or other human beings • Racially or ethnically insensitive • Condoning of drinking, alcohol use, drugs, smoking or any other illegal activity • Depicting behavior unbecoming of a ZBT gentleman • Profane, lewd or vulgar • Representative of pledging or hazing, practices the Fraternity has abolished • Out of line with the individual’s or chapter’s university/ campus policies The onus of monitoring chapter and individual communication falls to the individual user.

PHOTOS It is expected that all photos depicting, posted by or identifying ZBT brothers be in good taste. Photos should not depict nudity, lewd acts or ideas, obscene language or acts, alcohol or appearance of intoxication, drugs or drug use, any illegal acts or inappropriate materials or themes. This includes photos on chapter/colony, campus or personal media.

LEADERSHIP SCHOOL INFORMATION GROWING YOURSELF

CREATING CHANGE

In the Growing Yourself track you’ll begin to explore the concepts of leadership. What is it? What do leaders look like and what do they do? You’ll determine what kind of behaviors you believe you most exhibit and learn from your brothers about the kinds of behaviors they might employ to begin developing yourself as a stronger and more effective leader. You’ll also begin to identify some specific kinds of leaders in your chapter and determine how you can utilize those individuals to grow even more once you return back to your own chapter or colony.

In the Creating Change track, you will discuss with your brothers from across the country what exactly change is. What factors influence change? How do we get others to embrace the change we are trying to create?

Whose responsbility is change? You’ll be provided with a framework to undestand change and strategies to not only implement change, but to make it easier for yourself and others. Finally, you’ll create an action plan to take back to your chapter or colony.

MICHAEL (MIKE) J. SAXVIK Gamma (Northwestern) ’03 Director, Education Advisory Board Brother Saxvik formerly served as a Chapter Consultant with the ZBT International Headquarters. At Gamma Chapter he served as Vice President for Operations and Philanthropy Chair.

JASON J. COLOMBINI Eta Mu (California Polytechnic State - San Luis Obispo) ’14 Graduate Student Brother Colombini is a chartering brother of the Eta Mu Chapter and as an undergraduate served as Brotherhood Development Director, IFC president and President of the Associated Students, Incorporated.

CARLY BERGSTEIN Alpha Epsilon Phi Program Director, The Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation Carly is a member of Alpha Epsilon Phi Sorority who served as Chapter President at the University of Delaware and is now an advisor at NYU. She earned a master’s degree from Fordham University. She now works as program director for The B+ Foundation, a nonprofit aimed at fighting childhood cancer.

Meredith currently serves as the VP of Marketing and Communications for JWI and is an award-winning journalist and former editor-in-chief of Washington Jewish Week. She is a nationally recognized expert on modern Jewish motherhood, author of multiple books, co-founder of www.ModernJewishMom.com and host of several radio and television shows.

ETHICAL LEADERSHIP

SUPPORTING AND CHALLENGING OTHERS

In the Ethical Leadership track we will take leadership a step further. We challenge that good leaders aren’t just influential and able to make decisions, but rather they make ethical decisions based on sound principles and values. In this track we’ll discuss the definition of ethics and discuss a process by which you can make ethical decisions. You’ll be challenged to think quick by reacting to a scenario that has come up with your “executive board” and determine what the best course of action is and you’ll be asked to support that decision.

In the Supporting and Challenging Others track you’ll take some time to begin discussing exactly what accountability is and what it does and doesn’t look like. You’ll break down what your chapter or colony and the Fraternity currently employ as accountability measures and where those sit on the spectrum of support and challenge. You’ll have an opportunity to put yourself in a situation where you’ll be asked to make a difficult decision based on a brother’s actions.

STEPHEN P. EHRLICH, ESQ. Iota (University of Denver) ’70 Adjunct Professor, University of Denver Brother Ehrlich served the Fraternity as an International President from 19901992, and is a long-time advisor for the Iota Chapter at the University of Denver. He is an attorney and retired as the Chief Deputy Clerk of the United States District Court in Denver, and he currently serves as an adjunct professor at the University of Denver College of Law.

MELISSA KISH Pi Beta Phi Associate Director, Student Life and Learning, Indiana University Melissa supervises Greek Life and Leadership programs at Indiana University. In a volunteer role, she serves Pi Beta Phi as an NPC Document review coordinator. She also facilitates for LeaderShape, UIFI, and multiple other leadership programs. She holds undergraduate degrees in Business and Sport Administration and a graduate degree in Sports Administration.

DAVID J. COHEN Epsilon Mu (Kansas) ’03 Senior Associate, PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP The Epsilon Mu Founding Father is currently an Assistant Chapter Advisor and works as a CPA and Senior Associate at PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP. Brother Cohen served as Chapter President for three terms, as an undergraduate director of the Supreme Council, and received the 2011 Roswell (Buddy) Messing Award for Most Outstanding Brother. He lives in Kansas City, Kansas with his wife, Carolyn (SDT Beta Chi ‘11) and puppy, Jackson.

STEVEN K. PRIEPKE, J.D. Sigma Alpha Epsilon Associate Dean of Students, Director of Greek Life and Financial Manager, University of Miami Steve is a past Executive Director of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, Foundation and Financial and Housing Corporation. He is an expert in risk management, educational programs and alumni development. He currently serves as the Associate Dean and Director of Greek Life at the University of Miami.

BROTHER MICHAEL E. (MIKE) LUCKOVICH Alpha Mu (University of Washington) ’82

Michael E. (Mike) Luckovich, Alpha Mu (University of Washington) ’82, is a nationally syndicated editorial cartoonist for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and a two-time Pulitzer Prize recipient.

Brother Luckovich was born in Seattle on January 28, 1960. His family moved often, and Mike attended high school in Boise (ID) and Eugene (OR). He learned that drawing caricatures of his new teachers proved an effective ploy in making friends, even if his creativity was not necessarily appreciated by his subjects.

He was inspired by the cartoons in Mad magazine, especially those of Mort Zucker, who was known for his caricatures of celebrities and is Mike’s “first hero”. During high school, he discovered the work of political cartoonists Jeff MacNeily, his “biggest editorial cartoonist role model”, Pat Oliphant and Mike Peters. At age 14, he drew his first pointedly political cartoon to amuse his grandmother – a sketch of President Richard Nixon; he has been poking presidents and other celebrities with his pen ever since.

Brother Luckovich returned to Seattle and graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in Political Science. While working as a door-to-door insurance salesman his first two years after graduation, Mike sold cartoons on a freelance basis to the Everett (WA) Daily Herald.

He began his editorial cartoonist career with The Greenville (SC) News in 1984, moved to the New Orleans Times-Picayune a year later and started with the Atlanta Constitution, now the AJC, in 1989. He is now syndicated in 150 newspapers, the most frequently reprinted cartoonist in Newsweek – 15 years running, and has published two books of cartoons, Lotsa Luckovich (1996) and Four More Wars! (2006).

While at the AJC, he has been nominated for and received numerous awards. In 1994 he received the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award for cartoons that reflect positively on the disadvantaged, and in 1995 he received the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning for 20 different cartoons covering a variety of issues. In 2006 Mike received a second Pulitzer for cartoons that addressed various topics, from Hurricane Katrina to the Iraq War. That year he also received the Reuben Award, awarded by the National Cartoonists Society, for Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year, the National Headliner Award, the Thomas Nast Award and the Sigma Delta Chi Award. Last year, Mike received the United Nations Ranan Lurie Award for the best political cartoons reflecting the spirit and principles of the United Nations.

Mike and wife Margo live in Atlanta and have four children – John, Lucy, Mickey and Micaela.

STRATEGY #1 Find the bright spots. Your organization isn’t bad in all aspects, so identify the areas you succeed in already.

Determine what makes you good in those areas and replicate them for other areas.

STRATEGY #1 Shrink the change. When change is too large, the elephant sees it as impossible. Help people see smaller steps and wins along the way to the larger goal and they’ll be more apt to follow.

STRATEGY #1 Tweak the environment. Get rid of inefficient or meaningless policies and procedures. Reduce the friction that exists on the way to the change. When it’s easier to get there, people will do it more often.

STRATEGY #2 Script the critical steps. When helping the Rider know what to do next, be sure to give them easy and actionable steps. Don’t just say get better grades, provide simple steps to do so.

STRATEGY #2 Grow your people. Help those within your organization identify with and have pride in the organization. When they believe it reflects directly on them they’ll help make it better.

STRATEGY #2 Embrace the habits you want to see. Instead of being punitive or recognizing bad behaviors, instead focus on those that are doing what you want. Reward and recognize appropriately and people will change.

Harold A. Davidson, Ph. D., is a 1965 alumnus of the Alpha Delta Chapter at the University of Southern California, and is a Past International President of Zeta Beta Tau and Executive Trustee of the Alpha Delta Chapter. He currently serves as a member of the Fraternity’s Corporate Governance Committee. He is an investment counselor who lives in Los Angeles, California, with his wife, Nadine. The generosity of the Davidsons through the Zeta Beta Tau Foundation has halped make this session a permanent fixture at the International Leadership School.

An avid participant in the fraternity/sorority community, Lori has served as an active volunteer for Alpha Omicron Pi Fraternity in a variety of roles and she currently serves as the Director of Prevention Education for Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity.

Today Dr. Hart visits close to 70 campuses a year, bringing messages about relationships, alcohol education, and fraternity and sorority life. Campus Activities Magazine has recognized Lori as both “Female Performer of the Year” and “Speaker of the Year.”

She was awarded with the 2013 Alumnae Woman of Leadership Award at the Alpha Omicron Pi International Convention. In 2014, Lori was recognized by the North American Interfraternity Conference with a Silver Medal for her work in prevention.

Dr. Lori Hart has an undergraduate degree in Education from Auburn University, a master’s degree in Education from the University of Montevallo and a doctorate degree in Higher Education from Georgia State University.

Lori currently resides in Atlanta, Georgia, with her son, newly adopted daughter, and two Golden Retriever dogs.

SESSION COMMISSION MEETINGS

Commissions are designed to be an open forum for undergraduates and alumni alike to discuss important matters for the Fraternity. Commissions are each charged with a specific task or area of discussion upon which those who are a part of the commission create recommendations to present to the Convention body during the final business meeting. Commissions are led by brothers and friends of ZBT. See below for descriptions and charges of each of this year’s commissions. Should you have any questions about a commission, please find a staff member to discuss. Commissions will meet during the above times (final time only if necessary).

RECRUITMENT AND LEGACIES (Ivy I & II) The commission on Recruitment and Legacies is to discuss the current state of recruitment for chapters and colonies and to create and provide recommendations for the improvement of recruitment resources for undergraduate chapters and colonies. The commission should also discuss the Fraternity’s legacy policy and any recommendations for the policy as well as recommendations for education to the brotherhood on such policy. A copy of all legacy-related policies and supplemental material will be made available on-site for attendees.

Pardo, Theta (University of Pennsylvania) ’18 ALUMNI ENGAGEMENT (Highland Ballroom I & II) The commission on Alumni Engagement is to discuss the current state of alumni relations and alumni support within the Fraternity. The commission should create and provide recommendations for the growth and expansion of ZBT alumni services around the country as well as to generate ideas on the types of programs and support ZBT should provide to alumni brothers of ZBT. Further, the commission should discuss ways in which alumni and alumni associations can support events like Founders Day, Roger Williams Day and other ZBT holidays.

Colombini, Eta Mu (California Polytechnic State - San Luis Obispo) ’14 SEXUAL ASSAULT PREVENTION (Highland Ballroom V) Building on the great work ZBT has done with programs like Safe Smart Dating and Green Light Go!, the commission on Sexual Assault Prevention is to discuss the current state of the Fraternity’s initiatives for sexual assault prevention. The commission should create and provide recommendations for undergraduate and alumni brothers alike as well as chapters and colonies on how they can continue to educate and address sexual assault on college campuses and more generally in society. The commission will also discuss ways for chapters and alumni to further raise funds and awareness for the new Fund for Safe and Healthy Campuses within the Zeta Beta Tau Foundation.

Frieden, Esq., Phi Epsilon (University of Virginia) ’94 Meredith Jacobs, JWI ANTI-HATE PROGRAMMING (Highland Ballroom IV) The commission on Anti-Hate Programming is to discuss the current state of the Fraternity’s programming around anti-Semitism and anti-hate. The commission should create and provide recommendations for improvements to programming and how to provide stronger resources to all chapters and colonies in an effort for brothers to proactively combat hate. The commission will also review the Hate Against One is Hate Against All campaign in an effort to assist with ideas on how to best publicize and implement this campaign in the coming school year.

SESSION RONALD M. MANKOFF ALUMNI PANEL 11:00am - 12:30pm • Saturday, July 23 • Grand Ballroom III

The Ronald M. Mankoff Alumni Panel is a leadership program set in a talk show style format which engaged both undergraduate and alumni attendees as the panelists share career and life stories and advice. Attendees interact with the panelists through a question and answer dialogue.

Ronald M. Mankoff, Beta Iota (University of Minnesota) ’54, is the co-founder, along with his wife, Joy, of the Mankoff Family Foundation. A retired Dallas attorney, Brother Mankoff was active in the Dallas legal community for more than 45 years and served in senior leadership positions in many local and national organizations. The Ronald M. Mankoff Alumni Panel started in 2010 and has quickly become a highlight of the annual Leadership School.

WALTER L. SUTTON, JR., PH.D. Iota (University of Denver) ’67 Brother Sutton has had a distinguished legal career which has span over 46 years. He retired from Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. in December 2015, where he served as Associate General Counsel – Legal Administration & External Relations. In that position, Dr. Sutton was an internal advocate and external voice for Wal-Mart’s diversity initiatives, and represented the company in many public forums. Dr. Sutton’s parents were educators who instilled in him the belief that education was the key to his future success. In addition to his law degree, Dr. Sutton has earned a B.S. in Business Administration, Masters in Business Administration, and Ph.D. in Management Science. In 1989, he became the first African American to receive a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Dallas. After graduation from the University of Denver in 1967, Dr. Sutton accepted a position with Ford Motor Company in Dearborn, MI. He worked full-time at Ford while attending evening classes at Wayne State University School of Law in Detroit. After his first year of law school, he received a full scholarship to PANELIST the University of Michigan Law School where he was one of 5 African American students in the second year class. He participated in Black Action Movement (BAM) demonstrations on campus to demand the admission of more students of color, and worked in the Legal Aid Clinic representing diverse citizens in Ann Arbor.

After graduation from law school in 1970, Dr. Sutton returned to Ford’s Office of General Counsel where he practiced corporate and product liability law. Dr. Sutton returned to his native Texas in 1972 to become the first African American attorney at Tenneco Oil Company in Houston. He later became the first African American attorney at Texas Instruments Incorporated in Dallas. He was also the first African American to head the Office of Regional Counsel, U.S. EPA (Region 6) in Dallas. Dr. Sutton always used his positions and influence to advance opportunities for other diverse lawyers. Dr. Sutton served as President of the National Bar Association (NBA) in 1987. He also served as a member of the Boards of Directors of the State Bar of Texas, Texas Board of Legal Specialization, North Texas Legal Aid Society, and Dallas Legal Services Foundation. Dr. Sutton is a past Chair of the State Bar of Texas Minority Counsel Program which seeks to expand and increase opportunities for minority and women attorneys who provide legal services to corporate and government clients. Ebony Magazine has recognized him as one of “The 100 Most Influential Black Americans”. Dr. Sutton has represented the State Bar of Texas in the American Bar Association (ABA) House of Delegates, served as a Council member and Section Officer in the Section of Environment, Energy, and Resources, served as a member of the Standing Committee on Membership and the Standing Committee on Public Education, the Council on Racial and Ethnic Justice, and the Commission on Second Season of Service. Dr. Sutton currently serves as a member of the ABA Standing Committee on Government Relations, and the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the American Bar Foundation. He also serves on the Board of Advisors for the Institute for the Advancement of the American Legal System (IAALS) at the University of Denver, and on the Board of Directors of the National Judicial College in Reno, NV. President Bill Clinton appointed Dr. Sutton as Associate Administrator for Policy and Deputy Administrator of the Federal Highway Administration, U.S. Department of Transportation, Washington, D. C. In those positions, he traveled across America and around the world representing President Clinton and Secretary of Transportation Rodney Slater to assist in the development, improvement and expansion of highways and infrastructure. Dr. Sutton serves as a mentor to many diverse law students and lawyers across the country, and continues to work to provide opportunities for racially and ethnically diverse students. He currently serves on the NBA Board of Governors, and as Chair of the National Bar Institute, a 501 (c) (3) organization. He also serves as Chairman of the Wiley College Board of Trustees, a historically Black college in Marshall, TX. Dr. Sutton has received many honors and awards. The NBA has awarded him the C. Francis Stratford Award, the Gertrude E. Rush Award, and has inducted him into its Hall of Fame. The ABA Commission on Racial and Ethnic Diversity in the Profession awarded him the Spirit of Excellence Award in 2013, and ABA President Bill Robinson awarded him the Presidential Citation in recognition of his exemplary commitment to the value of diversity and his efforts to strengthen diversity and inclusion in the legal profession. The Dallas Bar Association awarded Dr. Sutton the 2012 Martin Luther King, Jr. Justice Award in recognition of his leadership and demonstrated values and ideals of Dr. King.

Dr. Sutton and his wife, Beverly, reside in Dallas, Texas. They have one son and two grandchildren.

JON K. HIRSCHTICK Xi (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) ’83

PANELIST

Brother Hirschtick is Founder and Chairman of the Board of Onshape, a startup company in Cambridge, Massachusetts, that offers the world’s first professional 3D Computer Aided Design (CAD) system that runs entirely in Web browsers and on phones and tablets. Prior to Onshape, Brother Hirschtick was Founder of SolidWorks, where he served as CEO, Board Member, and Group Executive from 1993 until 2011. SolidWorks is the world’s most widely used Windows-based 3D CAD system, with over 2 million users worldwide. Brother Hirschtick is a board member and advisor at many other startup companies in 3D printing, augmented reality, and CAD including Magic Leap, Mark Forged, Z Corp, Revit, Liquid Machines, Express3D, and Vela. He has bachelor’s and master’s degrees from MIT, where he was initiated as a brother of Zeta Beta Tau’s Xi Chapter (MIT, Psi class) and served as kitchen steward and Chapter President. He was also a member of the MIT Blackjack Team profiled in books, TV shows and the movie “21”. Jon is also the proud father of William H. Hirschtick ’17, a brother of Zeta Beta Tau’s Delta Eta Chapter at Lynn University.

DR. ROBERT (BOB) E. FISCHELL Alpha Upsilon (Duke University) ’51 Dr. Robert E. Fischell received his BSME degree from Duke University and MS and ScD (honorary) degrees from the University of Maryland. Dr. Fischell was employed at the Johns Hopkins University, Applied Physics Laboratory for 25 years where he actively developed more than 50 spacecraft for the US Navy and for NASA. Starting in 1969, Dr. Fischell began the formation of 15 private companies that licensed his patents on medical devices including heart pacemakers, defibrillators, coronary stents, and devices to treat epilepsy and migraine headaches. Dr. Fischell is a prolific inventor with over 200 issued US and foreign patents that have been the basis for medical devices that have been implanted in more than 10 million patients on a worldwide basis. Dr. Fischell’s honors include Inventor of the Year for the USA in 1984, election to the National Academy of Engineering in 1996, and several medals for distinguished accomplishments in science, engineering and innovation. In 2004 Discover magazine gave Dr. Fischell their annual award for Technology for Humanity.

PANELIST In 2005 he received the TED award (with a $100,000 prize) for contributions to medical technology. Also in 2005 Dr. Fischell provided a philanthropic gift of $30M to create and fund the Fischell Department of Bioengineering at the University of Maryland. In 2007 he received the prestigious Woodrow Wilson Prize for Public Service from the Woodrow Wilson Society for Scholars. In May 2008 he received an honorary degree as Doctor of Humane Letters from the Johns Hopkins University in recognition of his many contributions for the betterment of mankind.

In the first half of the year 2016 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Technical Council of Maryland, election as a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors, and on May 17 at the White House, he received from President Obama the National Medal for Technology and Innovation.

BARRY M. AARONS Gamma Tau (Arizona State University) ’71 Since 1997 Barry M. Aarons has been the owner of The Aarons Company LLC, a public policy consulting firm specializing in legislative representation, coalition building, business management, seminar and strategic planning facilitation and grass roots advocacy. His client base contains a broad portfolio of private sector, trade association and non-profit think tanks, corporations and organizations as well as political subdivisions. Aarons has over forty-five years experience in policy development, public affairs implementation and lobbying in the Arizona Legislature, other state legislatures and the US Congress. His expertise includes economic development, telecommunications, taxation, tourism and health care among other areas as well as campaign management, fund raising and strategic planning. He facilitates seminars on a multitude of topics including public policy, coalition building, grass roots advocacy, campaign management, message delivery and business management. He has assisted corporations, non profits and trade associations in the creation of their strategic MODERATOR plans and has developed and implemented speakers’ bureaus and other communications vehicles for communications campaigns, legislative initiatives and ballot propositions. Aarons spent decades as Public Affairs Director for Mountain Bell and USWest companies and in the regulatory and executive branches of Arizona State government. He served as Special Assistant, Policy Advisor and Legislative Director for former Arizona Governor Fife Symington. Aarons is a Senior Research Fellow for the Lewisville, Texas based Institute for Policy Innovation and is a regular faculty member for the Arlington, Virginia based Leadership Institute facilitating and instructing at their schools at scores of locations around the country since 1999. A frequent lecturer in political science at Grand Canyon University, the University of Phoenix and Arizona State University, he has also been an Adjunct Professor in Arizona State University’s Political Science Department from where he holds his undergraduate degree. He has written opinion pieces for the Arizona Capitol Times, AZ Attorney Magazine the Digital Deltan and the Phoenix Jewish News; has had numerous policy reports and opinion pieces published by the Institute for Policy Innovation (www.IPI.ORG); writes regularly on lobbying and policy issues for various trade association journals, magazines and newsletters; and, has had opinion pieces published in local newspapers nationally. Aarons served six years on the city of Glendale and Maricopa County Zoning and Planning Commissions; has been a member of the Arizona Academy since 1974; and, serves on numerous boards and commissions including the Maricopa County Judicial Selection Commission and five years as President of the Zeta Beta Tau Foundation. Brother Aarons currently serves as Chairman of the Zeta Beta Tau Foundation’s Corporate Governance Committee and as a member of the Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity’s Corporate Governance Committee. Aarons and his wife, Jody, live in Phoenix, Arizona. They have four children and four grandchildren.

FINANCE 101 (HIGHLAND BALLROOM I & II) Alexander A. Katz, Gamma Lambda (University of Hartford) ’11, and Shelley Laflin You’ve paid your money and now what? This session led by Brother Katz and Director of Finance Shelley Laflin will cover where the money your chapter/colony collects goes and what resources, events and opportunities are provided to you as a result. Brother Katz and Shelley will overview the difference between chapter/colony dues and those which are collected by the International Fraternity.

ZETA BETA TAU TODAY (HIGHLAND BALLROOM IV) Brandon M. Goldberg, Delta Iota (University of Central Florida) ’11, and Brian A. Hoffman, Sigma (Tulane University) ’09 This session, while intended for alumni of ZBT, is open to all brothers. How has ZBT changed and evolved over the years? What does governance and management of the Fraternity look like today? What are the priorities of the Fraternity as we move through the current strategic plan set to take us to 2020? Those questions and more will be answered in this session. Two staff members of the ZBT International Headquarters will provide an overview of the current governance, staffing model and direction of the International Fraternity. The session is designed to provide attendees a good understanding of where ZBT currently stands.

MEET THE COUNCILORS (HIGHLAND BALLROOM V) International President Matthew J. Rubins, Kappa (Cornell University) ’90 When’s the last time you had a chance to sit down with the Supreme Councilors of the Fraternity? Now’s your chance! This session will be a panel discussion of many of the current Supreme Councilors, and even many that were just elected by the Convention body.

International President Rubins will lead with some initial questions to help you understand the purpose of the Supreme Council, why each brother has decided to volunteer their time to the Fraternity in this way and what some of their goals for the Fraternity are. Brother Rubins will open the floor for general questions to the Supreme Council as well.

UTILIZING YOUR CHAPTER/COLONY ADVISORS (IVY I) David E. Rind, Delta Iota (University of Central Florida) ’14 and Douglas (Doug) A. Bodner, Xi (Georgia Institute of Technology) ’87 You’re not alone in your quest for success as a chapter or colony leader. The Fraternity has a structure for chapter/colony advisors and advisory boards. This session will highlight the roles and responsibilities of advisors and advisory boards so that you have a better idea as to exactly what they are there to do. Presenters will share their tips and recommendations for how to make the most out of working with your advisors and be open for questions you may have about the advisory role.

EXPLORE THE WORLD: STUDY ABROAD (IVY II) Dr. Grahaeme Hesp, Foundation for International Education As we are sure you know, there’s a lot to see in the world, and one of the greatest ways to see the sights is through study abroad. While studying abroad you’ll not only be taking courses to further your education, but you’ll also be immersed in another culture and be able to expand your own perspectives. Dr. Grahaeme Hesp will share his tips and tricks to best prepare yourself to study abroad. He will also highlight the partnership between ZBT and the Foundation for International Education and our Navigate London program.

RECRUITING TOOLS (HIGHLAND BALLROOM III) David Lecko and Josh Orendi, TechniPhi & PhiredUp Recruitment is a lot of work. We know that; you know that. This session will help you to identify some strategies and practices to make the process easier and more effective for the amount of work you put into recruitment. Our supporters from TechniPhi and PhiredUp will share a fantastic product the Fraternity supports, ChapterBuilder. The system helps you to track potential new members and every conversation or interaction you have with them. It’s our hope that you’ll learn to use this tool to help make all the work you put into recruitment more successful and to grow the relationships you create to grow the chapter or colony.

The Zeta Beta Tau Foundation is a nonprofit corporation exclusively committed to educational and charitable purposes that assist the brothers of Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity.

Leadership Grants

Scholarships Available

The Zeta Beta Tau Foundation has awarded over $1,500,000 in leadership grants since its founding. Zeta Beta Tau Foundation support plays an important role in the Fraternity’s educational programs because grants help underwrite portions of the Fraternity’s Leadership School, Dover Days, the James E. Greer, Jr. Presidents’ Leadership Academy and the Emerging Leaders Institute. In addition, the Zeta Beta Tau Foundation provides grants for the Israel Advocacy Summit, Hate Against One Is Hate Against All, Chapter Heritage Programming Grants and General Chapter Leadership Programming Grants.

In the more than fifty years since its beginning, the Zeta Beta Tau Foundation Scholarship program has grown from a single $250 scholarship to last year’s award of 25 scholarships totaling over $50,000. The Foundation has awarded scholarships totaling more than $1,500,000 to ZBT Brothers. The minimum scholarship awarded is $1,000. In 2016, awards ranged from $500 to $6,250. The scholarships and academic and leadership programs funded by the Foundation enhance the overall value of brotherhood in Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity by complementing the collegiate educational experience.

The Foundation assists the brothers of Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity by funding scholarships and academic and leadership programs to maximize their personal development and prepare them to be leaders of society.

Gottheil Society The Undergraduate Giving Society of the Zeta Beta Tau Foundation. The Gottheil Society is specifically designed for undergraduate brothers. To become a member, simply make an unrestricted gift of $18.98 or more to the Zeta Beta Tau Foundation.

Members of the Gottheil Society receive an invitation to a national reception and a membership lapel pin. To attain or renew membership within the Gottheil Society you may make a gift online or by contacting a member of the Zeta Beta Tau Foundation Staff.

OUR MISSION The mission of Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity (ZBT) is to foster and develop in its Brotherhood the tenets of its Credo: Intellectual Awareness, Social Responsibility, Integrity and Brotherly Love, in order to prepare its brothers for positions of leadership and service within their communities.

Mindful of its founding in 1898 as the world’s first Jewish Fraternity, ZBT will preserve and cultivate its relationships within the Jewish community. Since 1954, ZBT has been committed to its policy of non-sectarian Brotherhood, and values the diversity of its Brotherhood. ZBT will recruit and initiate men of good character, regardless of religion, race or creed who are accepting of these principles.

OUR CREDO The cover artwork for this year’s program book was created specially for Zeta Beta Tau’s 2016 International Convention by political cartoonist, Brother Michael E. (Mike) Luckovich, Alpha Mu (University of Washington) ’82, and highlights the convention theme of “The World of ZBT.” Find Brother Luckovich’s biography and accomplishments in the program book on page 14.

In addition to serving as the cover artwork, each brother registered for the 2016 International Convention has received a print of their very own.

At the 1963 Convention in San Francisco, a dozen or so chapter presidents were concerened about the wave of anti-establishment feeling which was emerging throughout the country, particularly as this manifested itself on college campuses in growing anti-fraternity sentiment. They determined to draw up a resolution that would serve as an effective response - at least so far as ZBT was concerned - to those who claimed fraternities were irrelevant and had outgrown their usefulness.

The resolution, which the Convention adopted overwhelmingly, became so widely quoted during the turbulent years of the 1960s that it became known as the “Credo” of Zeta Beta Tau. The Credo states: We, the members of Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity, believe that the development of the individual as a responsible, mature member of society is the primary goal of the university today.

We believe that fraternity offers to the university community a unique, desirable and successful means of achieving this goal.

In fulfilling the purposes of fraternity, we dedicated oursevles to the principles of: INTELLECTUAL AWARENESS. Fraternity creates an atmosphere conducive to the expansion of the individual’s intellectual horizons, the interchange of ideas within the academic community and the pursuit of scholastic excellence.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY. Fraternity requires the individual to commit himself and accept his responsibility to participate.

INTEGRITY. Fraternity generates a standard of personal integrity - a framework for the individual to maintain honesty, exhibit loyalty and retain a sense of self-discipline.

BROTHERLY LOVE. Fraternity inspires and expresses the interrelation of the individual with his fellows, his pride in the institution and respect for the wisdom of its traditions.
